I won't lie, History 1 is hard, but Hal makes it fun! He uses a text book he wrote which tells the other side of the stories you know from regular history books. He does good interpertations, and brings in vets to talk to the class.
This is a difficult class, but he could make it more difficult. A lot of the students drop because there is a lot of assigned reading. Basically your entire grade will come from quizzes and tests, but you MUST DO THE READING if you want a good grade.
He is one of the most entertaining professors there are out there. The class is hard, if you study the lecture notes you will do fine, you have to do some reading, but you could half ass it
Lots of assignments, very borning. Always quiz and test. No mercy to the students. Lots of reading. You can not fall behind a bit else you will never catch up. Give out essays to write for spring break.
he gave alot of lectures but they didnt matter because it was all from the book...tests are very detailed and hard. lots of reading...funny guy, but i wish he had taught more of what was going to be on the test. his joking gets old when you have a D
Great guy. I had a great time in the class, and he made it easy to learn. He went over all of the items that were going to be on the exam before the exam. He was an all around great guy.
This guy has everything a teacher has to offer. Makes history a fun and entertaining class. No doubt, hes one of the best "revionist" historian ever!!!It all makes sense when he lectures.
Cool and nice guy. Great professor. Makes history a fun and interesting subject. I learned a lot from him.
What an amazing man! He is so funny, so full of life, and truly passionate about history. Even though i considered his class to be one of the hardest classes yet, i'd take him again. U must read A LOT and take good notes. Study hard 4 tests

Hands down the best history and arguably the best professor at Mt. Sac. Unlike most history teachers he's neutral on issues and won't teach one side over the other. Go to his lectures so you don't have to over-analyze the text just to understand it.
He is sooo funny. His tests are kinda hard but his class is very entertaining. Lots of notes but he give you hints on what is on the tests. Take him if you want a laugh but it's alittle on the hard side but it's manageable..in other words go to class and study!
he gives lots of info and had big tests. but if you show up for class and read the book he will make it interesting and fun. very helpful. I hate essay tests but ended up with a high B. He has to be one of the 2 best professors I've had at Mt.sac. Take his class and you wont be sorry
THIS TEACHER IS THE BEST TEACHER AT MT.SAC I REALLY ENJOYED HIS CLASS. HES SOOOOOOOO FUNNY. I HATED HISTORY BEFORE HAVING HIM AND I WOULD SO TAKE ANOTHER ONE OF HIS HISTORY CLASSES. HES AWESOME AND WOULD GIVE HIS TEACHING STLYE A HIGH 8. HIS CLASS REQUIRES LOTS OF READING BUT ITS NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE. HES WORTH THE WORK.
Mr. Hoffman transports you back into time. He should be a actor and comedian. His lectures are fun. The tests are easy if you listen and take notes during his lectures. It was a intense class but I would take him again.
His class is way to tough for most of the students. Only 2 ppl in our class got A on the first exam. He's a funny guy(that's most students think of); however, he let students read alot. No lowest exam gonna be dropped. He takes quiz b4 his lecture. No extra credits from him. I would not recommend him to any of u guys.
If you do not read, you will not pass this class. Professor Hoffman is amazing. He balances humor with history and really gets you involved.

You should be able to memorize all vocabularies because you have to write down the terms on the test. He is very enthusiastic professor, but he does not offer extra credits easily. The extra credit he had offered was very difficult to get. So they were useless. If you to have laughters in the class, take his class.
If you don't like History, but have to take it, take him. He has a great sense of humor and I'd have to say, history wasn't that bad in his class. He's not just another boring history teacher. Very entertaining! HIGHLY recommended!

This teacher is definately the best. He lets you know exactly what is expected of you, which is reading and coming to class and taking notes. He puts in time and effort into letting you know what he wants out of you and expects you to put in the time to study and know your info. Greatest teacher ever!! Pulling an A and I thought I would hate history
The best history teacher, ever. There are never any surprises. He has energy, and makes history fun.(As fun as possible, anyway.) I highly recommend taking him.
He is such a great guy he made things easy for me. he would work with you to help you get the grade you need to pass. He makes it easy to come to him if you need it. He's also very funny keeps you awake.
He's a great teacher. I missed a few days of class and he worked with me to make up my tests, and get the grade I needed. I'm passing this class with a C now. He's great (and funny too)
yeah he is awesome he messes around and he tells you when "pop" quizes are practically gives you the test questions before
He is a really good teacher. very funny in class, make history interesting. you have to study hard for the test, a lot of memorization. but as long as you work hard, he will give you a decent grade. I would recommend him for anyone. He rounded my final grade to give me an A.
Hal is a great teacher. He makes class fun and interesting. I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in a History class before. I was doing bad towards the end of the semester and he helped me a lot and I was able to pass! You have to really study for his tests and you'll do fine in his class.
great teacher overall. a little tough, but he gives out study guides. Make sure you use his study guides, which are the best way to study for the test. and be ready for quizzes, he gives out a lot.
Hiiiiilarious...just read the book and you'll be fine, not that hard at all...
he is the best teacher ever... he is so funny... his impression are hilarious... his class is semi hard if you don't take notes or read... the study guides are your best friend...
This guy gotta be the funniest history professor out there. his jokes are a little ****ed though at times. but he is a good teacher who gives lots of help. good luck!
Despite the fact that he was a funny teacher, he was extremely picky when grading papers. He corrected every grammar, spelling, ... mistakes, which I made on the paper (He must assume that every1 in his classroom were English major students). His textbook was even ticker than my laptop. Finally words, Do NOT take him. Take Greenwood!
very funny teacher, very demanding, and very helpful. he expects the best from his students. his exams are usually in essay format. however, he will help you to succeed in every exam. take him if you want challenges.
Good Prof. just need to know the trick to pass his class. Memorize 2 essays in advance and 10 identification items for his 3 tests and recieve A.
Hal is THEE most hilerous guy I know. He makes his class really interesting. He'll even act out voices of the army and everything. Hes really nice too! However, his test are fairly hard. Especially the first exam. The second one was a little easier. He is a fair grader on papers. For summer, 3 papers, 3 exams, 2 video assign.
Very funny guy, if you don't want a lot of work, take him during the summer. Everyone says that he is difficult, but all the test materials he gave it to you in a VERY HELPFUL study guide, which contains everything that you will ever need in the test. Do try get the book, it is a handy tool.
Great guy, very funny. He is very helpful and seems to really enjoy teaching and history. If you are looking to sail through college with no effort, you might not want him, if you want to learn and expand your thinking..take him
Great teacher, you won't fall asleep. He is a little hard though. It's all writing and you can never seem to write everything he wants. Gives extra credit.
you wont fall asleep. youll understand easily. hes very funny! however, its a little hard studying for the tests...lots of things to memorize, but he helps u. i definitely reccommend him!
I loved going to this guy's class! The best part of his class was the Civil War section where he constantly does his Southern Belle voice. Ha!!! If you think you are going to cruise through his class, think again, read the book and follow his outlines he give you.
this teacher is the hardest teacher you will ever have (shifts eyes). You need to be in class every meeting and get all A's on his test or you will fail. His exams are very difficult and remember GODODGERS, this will help on one test. if you read all this and didn't have a problem, then you should take his class, all were lies except the go dodger
Take this class! Even if you're not a history major. He's really relaxed, really mellow, lectures are smooth and easy to listen to, very entertaining. If you pay attention you will get a good grade.
Good Teacher. Very funny; does imitations. Have to read. Just attend class, listen and you'll be fine.
Great teacher! Real funny, makes the class interesting. Lets you know whats on the exams. Grades Fair, Some reading; if u take notes you'll be good. Real Dodger fan. Good guy n great professor, just dont fall asleep or your dropped!
Great teacher! Made history super fun!! Easy quizzes, exams, study guides given, just follow the reading and you'll do fine! BEST HISTORY TEACHER
#1 teacher in my book....Im not going to lie he is very difficult but he warns you and gives you EXACTLY what you need to study for. As long as your not too lazy to read the book you will love this class. By far 1 of the most amazing teachers I have come across FUN TOO!
Excellent teacher, very knowledgeable with history, very clear tests are not difficult if you just read, dictation will ensure an A
He could make anything interesting.
he is the best history teacher. when he lectures its like your in the story his teaching. i highly recommed him for hist.1& hist3. he's also not that bad looking older man makes it easy to come to classs each week.he's very helpful so if you dont pass its your fault
This class was as good as a history class will get. He's awesome with his lectures and keeps you interested. Quizzes sucked, they were so short and random information! Please read the book and study hard for the exam and you will do just fine. Oh yeah, the exams were hard because you have to write an essay worth 60% (with no notes)
The first exam scared away many students however, after taking that first exam, you will know what to expect and definitely do well on the last 4 exams. He is very interesting and his lectures come from the top of his head which makes the class fun. Prepare for exam essays and you'll do well for sure. He's sooooo goofy too!!
Interesting classes. Exams not scantrons: 10 matching questions, 5 defining of terms, and there are three essay questions, he picks two, you write on one of the two. you will have to read the book for additional informaiton and what he lectures on is the important stuff. Make sure you study.
He is a great teacher. His lecture is more like a play that makes studying a lot easier. The class is not easy BUT there are study guides with everything that is on the test.If you do this, you are fine. If you can't do the study guide...don't take his class.I had him in wtr. I had quizes,in-class assign.,and exams every week.I got an A w/ hard work.
Great thing about this prof is he provides study guide for each chapters on beginning of the semester, gives clear outline for essays for the exams, does fun & interesting lectures. Do all the writing assignments (takes only 20 min) take daily notes & review the study guide & you'll do fine!
He's great. Im sitting in class right now and he is doing an impression/act on T. Roosevelt and the Panama Canal. He really puts on an interesting and educational show. Bring popcorn. Tests are not easy but he provides extensive studies guides. Its a history comedy show every week. Take him!
Great teacher! Really funny, can be vulgar and say some kind of offensive things, but teaches history very well. Not easy for lazy people, and even for hard-working students, but gives really good study guides, so if you're willing to work, take him, learn, and have fun! Got an A for the brutal 6 week session, so just work hard!
He is a great teacher. Hard but he is so funny. It is great that he makes history fun to learn. Just keep up on the readings and you will do fine.
If you are English not good, don't take his class. He is very hard grade professor.
This professor was great!! Although his class is not easy. I came in 2 weeks late to the class and worked really hard to stay caught up. As long as you listen and study real hard for the tests you will be fine. FUNNY GUY!
Prof. Hoffman is the best history teacher at Mt. Sac. He makes his lectures interesting. Although he may be a tough grader, if you stick to the material, work hard and study, you should pass. He likes Jack Nickolson and the Dodgers!!! And a bottle of Tequila wouldn't hurt. Veteran Buff!!! Big time! More than anything, he's helpful and understanding
He is really funny. Extremely helpful. Tests are really hard, but he gives you study-guide to study. 60/100 is essay on the tests, but he will even correct your essays before the tests. That's the nicest thing a prof. can ever do for you. You will love how he makes fun of the history. JUST PICK HIM!!
whew..what can i say about good ol hal! hahaha..he's a great professor. He's only difficult if you do not read the book, or you don't study his lecture notes. He's hella funny, and had me crackin up every lecture. He gives you the "other" side of history =). lmao @ the tequila comment. thats sure is Mr. Hoffman!
Professor Hoffman made history so entertaining and interesting. Made me actually want to attend class and learn. Must be a self-motivated learner and not a sensitive person. A lot of reading, just do the study guides, and READ and you will be fine!
I would not recommend this class for winter/summer sessions. The 6 weeks is crammed with alot of information and reading. I try so hard on tests and all are C's; getting A will be tough for many. Hes a funny guy and he always relates history to today, so its easier to learn, but he doesnt cover everything in lectures that will be on the test. READ
I dont know why prof hoffman has such a low avg rating. This guy is the man!!! funniest prof, interesting, very helpful and clear. I liked his class so much that this was my 3rd time taking him. NO not all hist 39 but i also took him for hist 1 and 16. I recommend him to ne one. Test are the same as ne other hist teachers and hw is little and easy
Great Professor! Don't take ANY of his classes if you aren't a serious student. Waste of your time and his! EXCELLENT professor! Not many like him around! You never have to question what's asked of you. Study hard, any questions you have, ask. You're well on your way to an A! P.S. Think outside the box when it comes to using your resources!!!
Hal is a great story teller when teaching history. This class is definitely not a walk in the park. You really need to work hard and do all the reading. The grade you get in his class is a good representation of how much work you put into it. I do not think I ever recall of a time I laughed my lungs out in a history class.
Great teacher. I had no interest in history before I began his class, but I actually enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot! Hes very funny, very helpful and knows his stuff. I got an A in the class, however out of 35 students only 15 made it to the final. The tests are essay and short answer based. Just take notes, listen to him, study, and get an A!
He is an amazing teacher. If you just pay attention to his leactures and take good notes, you'll pass the class. Do the reading and you'll excel!
First of all I RECOMMEND everyone to take this class, he's hilarious and Actually makes you enjoy history. He makes impressions and uses accents,I never wanted to miss this class. Not an easy A course, but it's not impossible to pass. The only real hw is reading which covers exams, provides a study guide that is very helpful.Knocks off 1 of worst Exams
He's grades very hard! His tests consists of multiple choice, short answers, and essay questions. He expects the essay questions to be like a complete essay. 5 paragraphs! Jokes around too much. He admits this is a very hard course!
Hoffman is a really good prof. He makes the class interesting even when the material is not because he jokes around and tends to ramble off topic. Although you do have to take a lot of notes ,and you pretty much have to read most of the textbook.
omg he is like the funniest teacher ever. he made me like history! made me want to be a history teacher!
He is very easy the study guide is exactly what is on the test. he is a great proffesor. was failing almost all semester and started doing the studi guide and ot a B in the class HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Super fun class favorite teacher of all time. Just do the readin and you'll do fine. people who complain just didnt read. He is really laid back and he'll work with any situation. Meet my husband in this class which made it all that better
took his class last winter. fun class. always keeps things interesting even though the class is about old history. will try his best to help you out. enjoyed your class professor!
Omg, Mr. Hoffman is just a really funny guy! He really makes history fun and no need to fall asleep during class. However, you need to be fully prepared for his exams because they are quite challenging. But he's always around to help you if needed.
Cool history professor. He really knows his stuff! Exams are not that bad, but it does require lots of reading. Thanks Mr. Hoffman, you're totally awesome!
Awesome History professor! He makes History come alive with his funny accents and side stories about historical figures. It's like story time but with a lot of note taking. His exams are hard but he gives you a study guide that covers the items on his test. The test consist of an essay, 5 short answer questions and 10 multiple choice.
Hoffman is a fantastic teacher. He makes history interesting and fun for his students- and is so passionate about what he teaches! It's extremely important that you read the textbook and listen careful to his lectures, because it IS quite difficult to score an A on his tests.
Mr Hoffman OMG! Funny as hell. I took him for California History and everyday he had the whole class laughing, I never thought I would enjoy history as much as I did. His Test are Semi-hard if you don't study. Hit the books and Study guides and you will pass. He is not a push over but approachable and willing to help and answer all your Questions.
This professor is just awesome. The class is definitely easy, because all you have to do is basically take the notes, then study the notes, and read the book. If you are not lazy and do all that, you'll get your A and also have a good time, since he makes history very interesting and his class is truly enjoyable. I highly recommend taking his class
Mr Hoffman was by far the best instructor I had at Mt San Antonio. He was really passionate about history but also was open to listen to your interpretation of history. Very Helpful, door always open, and just a great instructor. With so many boring instructors out there, he in my book is a credit to Mt Sac Take him he is great! (A+)
He is a great teacher, and make history fun and enjoyable anyone. His lectures are exciting and makes you view history differently. His test you will have to read the book and review the study guides. Just like in any class you will have to put in some time but his class is definitely worth taking. I highly recommend if you want a fun class
Great teacher, MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS. very silly.
TAKE HIM! His class is a lot of work, but you'll learn so much. I HIGHLY recommend him for history majors. READ the book(s), show up for class and PARTICIPATE. I honestly can't say enough about what a great teacher he is.
Hoffman is a VERY FUNNY teacher makes history fun. Quizzes/ pop quizzes/ test are hard. You need to stay on top of all the readings, and used the study guide questions by answering them and sending the answers to him to see if they are right. You have to take your own notes does not do power point.
Best History professor you can have!
I have him this semester. He is an amazing professor! Not only did he make me love history , he made me believe in myself. Hands down best professor.
He is a wonderful prof who makes the subject interesting. Time flies by in class, lectures are not boring. You MUST take notes, attend class, read the book and study to do well on his exams. If you are looking for an easy history class, skip him, but if you want to learn something and enjoy thinking you will be delighted. He is an amazing professor
Hal is a terrific prof with a passion for the subject. Class lectures are engaging. You are expected to attend class, take notes, participate in class and read the book. If you do those things, the tests are not that hard. You do need to think and be able to write well.I didn't think I would like a Hist 1 class, but I loved it. Cheers - J.
The Professor has a passion for the subject that intrigues the students. You do have to study and attend class but it's worth it. He really does make the subject come alive.
The way he lectures is very interesting! He doesn't use notes or slides, he lectures story-like, as if he was there when it happened! He's very funny and helpful. His geography quiz was only difficult because i didn't study. I used the book a lot to get minor details, but his tests weren't that detailed. Great professor!
This class requires A LOT of work, and I don't recommend this class if you're taking a lot of other classes.
This professor has a sarcastic wit that helped me to focus better during lecture time because he was actually funny. He won't blind-side you with homework or quizzes, you know exactly when everything will happen and will be due.
Great teacher, practical.
Really great (& sarcastic lol) teacher & very helpful! I personally liked the map quizes. The tests are couple macthin, couple few essays choices(essay goes by chapters so study@leas 2 chapters very well) I took 2 history classes @ the same time & still passed with a "B". no im not a history major, its my least fav but he made it interesting.
This teacher is can keep the whole class laughing. I really enjoyed his lectures. If you do the read and the study guides it'll be easy to pass. But I repeat you must do the reading and study guides. I earned a "B". But that is only because I didn't do the reading or study guides for the first test and got a "D" on the first test. Ouch. He's a real
Hoffman is a really great teacher. I had him for a 7:45 am class and his sarcasm and humor kept me awake and focused the whole time. attendance is crucial. USE THE STUDY GUIDE! it helps alot!
I took him for Winter semester. His class was very difficult because of the weekly exams and essays. His lectures were not boring and he's one of those teachers that actually do help when you ask for it. But as a student, I could sometimes tell is own bias views regarding politics. I think you have to go to the class to know what I mean.
Dr. Hoffman is amazing. I never learned History until this class. Took him for Winter 2012 and it was extremely demanding because of all the reading. But he is very helpful and funny as hell. He should do stand up comedy, you will laugh your but off. Follow his study guide and you'll do fine. Would take him again in a heart beat.
Great funny guy, did not expect him to be such a comedian when I first walked in. Knows his stuff like the back of his hand. Keeps lectures interesting and engaging. Tests can be hard but passable with an A if you take notes, study, and read the text. One of the best history teachers I have had. Thanks for the A and class Hoffman.
Hal is an incredible history teacher! He loves his subject and it comes across really well. He doesn't allow laptops or iPads to take notes on, but he handwrites all his notes on the whiteboard so it's easy to keep up. He makes history so interesting and really makes you want to keep coming to class. He's fair grader, but the tests are difficult.
Hal has got to be the coolest history teacher alive. He gives you a sylabus with the entire semester laid out for you. You'll know all your reading assignments, essay questions, test and quiz dates from the first day of class. Trust me; Dr Hoffman will make sure you have every opportunity to get an A in his class. And he loves to joke around.
GREAT TEACHER! Really funny! EXTREMELY helpful!! Gives you a study guide. If you send him your notes after reading and answering study guide he'll highlight whats important and on the test! you get to choose which essay question you answer on the test. The essay Q's are EASY points if you study them before hand! fill in the blank Q are off quizzes!
Mr. Hoffman is a COMEDIAN. He keeps the class laughing with his jokes. The class during winter intersession was crazy because we had to learn so much in so little time but it wasn't very difficult. The test are a little challenging but he goes over everything in class and even gives you a study guide. I loved his class!
This teacher is amazing, He is so funny and makes the class so much more interesting. He is very fair and tells you in advance his rules and what he does not put up with. You will definitely learn in this class because he tells interesting stories, very talented and knows all the dates of everything. Take him you will love history after this
Dr. Hoffman's class is structured in a University environment for students who are looking to transfer to a four year campus. You have to study hard to pass his class, and he is a comedian when lecturing to the class each session. This is no wissy-washy high school History class.
Fantastic teacher. He has his PhD and is by far the most knowledgable professor I have ever taken. Not an automatic A, but if you spend a few hours a week studying it isn't difficult to pass. He also has a sense of humor and knows the answers to any questions you have. HIGHLY suggest this teacher!
Professor is very entertaining, highly knowledgable & helpful, but I would NOT recommend this class. There are tons of work&studying time you will need to do. It's going to be challenging especially if you're going to be taking other classes&also working. There are pop quizzes&a lot of writing for his exams. He also requires a lot of things to buy.
I took his class thinking it was going to be easy, but man was I wrong. He tells you from the beginning that this class is a bit hard. After reading his Syllabus I wanted to drop, but than he gave his little Braveheart speech about challenging yourself and I decided to stay. I AM GLAD I DID!! This Guy's Awesome. I got a B. He Makes History fun.
Yes you need the book. Yes there will be lots of reading. Took during winter tests were MC with an essay. You will not find a better history teacher. Class time was filled with funny and interesting lecture and jokes. take someone else if you want to be bored. I was in it for the stories.
Professor Hoffman is probably one of the best history teachers on earth. His sense of humor and method of teaching is superb. However, taking his class is an investment. You have to read, buy many textbooks, and put in a lot of effort. For a general ed, the work load is a bit too much. Also, be prepared to know your stuff. He has no multiple choice
Hoffman is the best instructor on campus. That doesn't mean easy, because it isn't. Put the time and effort in and you will earn your grade along with some knowledge that isn't taught in most history classes.
His tests are hard, however, if you pay attention to him and read the book then you're guaranteed an A. What I did was take notes on EVERYTHING he lectured on then further studied those topics by reading the book. His quizzes are easy if you pay attention in class. No papers. Straight forward class. Lectures are funny and easy to follow. Good luck
Hoffman is great! Had him at 8 am and he always seemed to wake us up with exciting stories. His lectures are hilarious, which helped me understand the material on a whole new level. He provides a study guide and expects you to read the material. If you go to class and study, you should be good.
The test were really tough. What hurt me was exam 1. I got a B. I had to work hard for that B to recover from exam 1. There is no hw really... but that's bad because only the exams count. He does give you a study guide which was EXTREMELY helpful. And he tells you exactly what he wants. Gives extra credit rarely. (textbook is in the library)
In terms of a teacher that can relate to his students to understand completely, this is the right professor for you. He has a slight sense of humor when he teaches to help you from getting bored. The tests are pretty straight forward because he provides you a study guide at the beginning of the course for them. Same goes for his map quizzes.
Toughest history class ever. You really have to work for your grade. Reading is ESSENTIAL to getting the grade you want! Follow the study guide and you are good. Learned a lot though & he is very entertaining in lecture! Test: 10 fill in the blank, 5 identifications (1 paragraph each), 1 essay (gives 3 prompts ahead of time, 2 will show up)
Oh my god. Are you ready? I think not. If you are willing to take this class please make sure you have it together. If you deal with any kind of mental health issue such as depression DO NOT take this class. Do not do that to yourself. On one hand, he is a pretty decent professor and his lectures are always entertaining. On the downside, he expects WAY too much. True, he gives you everything you need to know, but that everything is too much to handle if you plan to take any other class. He gives out like a million handouts and expects you to know everything off of them. Brace yourselves.
He expects a lot of his students but you definitely get back what you put in. If you're just looking to fill a GE requirement and are looking for an easy "A" stay away from this class. If you are looking for a fun challenging course where the professor will invest in you if you show effort take it. I am a better writer and student because of this
Professor Hoffman is kind of an ass but a pretty amazing teacher. Almost all of the assignments are written and he is a tough grader but He gives great lectures and is more than willing to help improve your grade. Definitely would take him for another class
I dropped his class and got a withdrawal but don't take him regardless of what everyone says he is a hardass and you will fail on the tests. Beware of fill ins and essay questions.
This professor makes you really work for it. This class requires textbooks that are very hard to understand and a novel that you must read on your own time and write two essays for. The test consist of 10 one word free response, 5 paragraphs on Who,What,Where,When,Why that must be memorized, and lastly an essay that also must be memorized.
Amazing professor!!! I recommend him to anyone who will take a history class!! Hands down with his lectures, very knowledgeable and most important of all he makes it fun for all. I compared him to Robin Williams, great sense of humor. His teaching techniques will help you remember the material and not be bored with lectures! By far BEST PROF I HAD!
He scares away many of his students on the first day, because he gives you PACKETS of info. All of which is useful, but nevertheless intimidating. I consider myself to be pretty disciplined when studying, but the tests were ROUGH. You make your own grade. He's a great professor, you just need to put in work. I have a belief only the smartest pass.
Wonderful teacher he made the class enjoyable, he has that passion for his subject hat a lot o teachers dont have. Id take his class again
Prof. Hoffman is kind of obnoxious but still a pretty nice guy. There's a LOT of material that he'll give you, but don't be overwhelmed! Follow his directions, do the reading, study, and you'll pass. You WILL have to work for your grade, but he provides you with everything you need to succeed. Make sure you're willing to put in the time and effort!
Oh my goodness he reminds me of some of the worst high school teachers I've had.
Unfortunately, I had to drop with a W but tbh it was worth the W... Worked and read all the way up to week 7 but my deciding factor was that I couldn't keep up this pace for a full 16 weeks :( Way too much reading and convoluted instructions from the professor take too much from my life force lol.
Very messy class schedule... He keeps changing the syllabus drastically which really throws me off as a student and also cancelled an entire week of class without notice.
Hoffman is a really cool teacher and makes class fun to be at, he is hilarious and very kind. HOWEVER, this class was the hardest class Ive very taken. There are 3 exams and he barely gives homework so the fate of your grade is pretty much on these exams. The exams usually have little to NOTHING he has discussed in class. Dont take this class!
Difficult and lots of work.
He really makes the class harder than it needs to be
He is a very easy going professor but requires a lot of your own personal effort in order to pass. Make sure to pay attention to the study guides since they are practically the entire test. And dont be too hard on yourself for the essay questions, as long as you know what youre talking about youll be fine.
can't believe this guy is serious
WARNING: There is a lot of work to do such as heavy in reading, studying, and memorizing maps which is a huge pain in the butt. He is extremely test heavy. Although I don't believe many would like his class, I liked his class because to me he made lectures like storytelling so it was easier to digest history.
This professor is great but there are 2 big problems I had to overcome in this class. 1. There are fill in questions that you have to remember the weird names and random dates from on the exams. 2. The book he requires is scatter-brained and I could barely understand it let alone memorize important events. Nice guy, class is hard.
He was an awesome professor! Super energetic and animated!!
He is fairly strict yet a very funny and knowledgeable professor, even though I got a C in this class he made it interesting to learn about, the things that were challenging were the written parts of the tests and book reports. He assigns you to read a few short books and write a little about them which I didn't read so I deserve this grade. F2018
He is very nice and lectures are very interesting. No homework other than reading. You will have to read a lot. You get the grade you work for. He is very straightforward on what the exams will be on.
funny dude, no homework except a couple of big essays and written assignments. i will say you need to do a ton of reading in this class to pass.
be prepared to do lots of reading outside of the textbook and in the textbook. you read your ass off for your grade. test questions will throw you off. but he is a vibe to be around and is really funny during lectures, but most of what he talks about in his lectures arent on the tests..
Reading lots of reading says nothing useful in lectures.
Such an amazing professor. He really wants us to succeed. He creates amazing lectures and was hilarious throughout the semester. There are 2 lecture exams and 2 book exams but they were really easy as long as you read the info and paid attention, he even gives you the prompts ahead of time and tips as well. He makes learning history fun!
Enjoyed Wild West Hist. with Dr. Hoffman. Great lectures and his humor made the class enjoyable. He gives you a clear understanding on what is expected so nothing should come as a surprise. Good amount of work but he guides you through as long as you show up and keep up with the work, you will do good. Great professor overall.
If you're not a good test taker, I don't really recommend him. He is very funny and always in a good mood. His lectures are actually interesting to listen to. The only thing was that we barely had any assignments, it was mostly lectures and then exams. He was always willing to help though and never really gave homework.
Took this class Spring 2022, such an amazing prof. Loved the material and learning from him, he made history fun to learn. The 2 exams were a challenge but if you studied and read the material you should be good. 2 book exams were easy to do as long as you read, allows notes and even gives prompts ahead of exam. Final was an easy A, def take him.
It's a pleasure to be at his lectures. He makes history fun and interesting. However, the exams are crazy. If you don't read, you're done... Sometimes, he gives hints before the quiz or exams, but anyway reading, reading, reading. He is also very clear about instructions and there is a lot of take-home assignments.
He is a great teacher. Super understanding. It keeps you wanting to learn more. Get right to the point. if you are not doing your part you can consider him very difficult. Do your part and you will pass with flying colors. In the future, I will take more classes with him if needed
He's really chill, has a good sense of humor, and I love the way he'd act out scenes in historical events.
Great guy that teaches very well. He knows what he is talking about and is not just reading off something. Makes jokes often and answer questions well. Gives essays that need effort but grades pretty easily on them. You will learn a lot in this class and have fun. If you don't pass this class, that's not on him. Will definitely take him again!
The book was a little hard to follow, and the exam study guide was intense as he didn't narrow it down to what was on the exam. Essays (submitted online), he graded on content rather than structure, with no MLA nitpicking. He's very old-school, so there's a lot of papers (even the grade sheet, it's not on canvas) but overall, an awesome professor!
Professor Hoffman was honestly a delight for me. I missed about 4 weeks of class because of my mental health and he put that aside and assured me I'd still be able to pass the class. There isn't a lot of homework your grade is mainly based off the 3 major tests you are given. If I recall there were 3 quizzes and 3 tests.
Mainly all work done on paper. 2 book essays in class that need to be written however you can make a "cheat sheet" with your essay written on their and just copy it on the blue book in class. Anything on the exams is what you learned in class and the textbook provides some more insight on that subject. AWESOME professor and very caring.
The absolute worst class I have taken in my 2 years at Mt. Sac. At one point I had the highest grade in class at a C. Test questions were completely dumb and even for a 16 week course you had to MEMORIZE dozens of terms and events each week. Half the class dropped and I mean literally HALF if not more. Save yourself and take anyone else or suffer.
dawgg my stem class was lowk harder than this -- unnecessarily hard cuz our grade literally depends on the tests...don't take this class if you have other hard classes. had to memorize bunch of terms and only tested us on like 20.. prof is kinda funny (sometimes) but also a cornball lol. But very nice person, wouldnt take again though.
wait for the review earlier i meant that this class was harder than my stem class hahah oops.
Cool prof with understandable lectures, however he printed the lecture slides so we can take notes on the "important" things but I never knew what was important and what wasn't. Grade is made up mostly from tests and they were very hard, 100+ terms each test but we would only get tested on a few. Passable class if you aren't taking hard classes
Honestly a great professor, would take him again. Lectures were straightforward and easy to follow. He tries to make them entertaining and is pretty flexible if you email him a late paper. Theres no weekly homework, but if you wait until the night before tests or essays to review/write -you're looking at 3-5 hours of work to earn an A or B
For me, I figured out his system and studied/memorized a lot and got an A. For my class though, semester started with 43 people and there was only 22 after the drop date. Lectures are really good but you need to study a lot outside to be prepared for tests. No regular work/assignments only dumb long readings and test. Just take HIST7 online.
Hoffman was great. Easy to talk to, dry sense of humor. Class has a fun name but it IS a history class so you do put in some effort. Grade is based off exams, quizzes and essays, you can retake exams if you missed it that day or decided to skip if u werent prepared. basically no homework. Doesnt push the textbook, but I really reccomend u read it.
Try to attend the lectures and take good notes. His study guide will be your best friend in the class. Use that as reference when reading the textbook and lecture notes. Lots of self studying for exams. Gives take home essays worth 20 points on your exam, 80 points on your exam you do in class. He is a good story teller and pretty engaging.
Winter 2025. It's a very easy class. Lectures are to sit and listen and take notes if you want to. Quizzes and tests are easy, there is a study guide for them. Essays are 700-1000 words. The 1st volume of the textbook is on Anna's archive for free or you can use the American Yawp which is equally as good.
If you love history, you will love his class. His lectures have passion and are interesting. The workload is quite heavy, with essays and extra textbook readings on top of the lectures. Exam heavy as well, with one exam a week during winter 2025. He had by far, the most unique final I have ever taken during my time at Mt. SAC.
Probably as much fun as you'll have in a history class. He will often tell fun stories and also give entirely random tidbits of information. Most of the grade is based off of the exams, and you NEED to read the textbook to study. He provides a free alternative e-textbook if you don't want to buy them. I would definitely take another class with him.
Professor is disrespectful to those who don't want to participate in class. Presses the whole class for not participating in class. Asks questions that no one knows and expect people to answer. Doesn't teaches the materials for the test. Make weird comments and weird faces in the process. Sarcastic when talking. Overall would not recommend taking.
I had attended 3 weeks with him on Fall 2025. I feel like he is very strict and not very interesting even though I'm interested in History.
Hoffman is a fantastic teacher, and a great guy. Do not expect to pass the exams and thus the class without doing the assigned reading. The lectures are helpful, but insufficient (he often goes on interesting tangents, but nothing that will help you if you only rely on them). Do the reading. The take home essays are easy points. Fun final!
Workload is heavy but it is still a fun class. Too many people to remember with the same name, but it is history not much to expect. Essays are pretty easy. Get the textbook, it'll make it easier and you have to read a book for the book exam. Final was easy. He is funny and goes off topic, but it makes the class less boring.
professor hoffman's classes are graded entirely on exams, essays, and quizzes. this means there is basically no homework, so u must do ur own work of reading and studying if u wanna pass. professor is good at lecturing but sometimes goes on tangents, still entertaining tho. he is also very understanding, just make sure to email or talk to him!
