I want to start off by saying I am currently taking the class and have an A and I DO NOT plan on dropping. This is one of the most boring classes I have ever taken. If you are not required to take this class, DONT. He is dry, doesn't use any slides, and he is hard to understand. He is incompetent as a teacher, watch his body language, he knows it.
This professor cares more about chatting with students in class than actually teaching the class. Class is unstructured- no textbook and no lecture slides. He just talks and talks about nothing relevant to medical ethics. He often allows students to just interrupt and tell random personal stories instead of actually trying to teach.
Avoid this teacher at all cost... he is TERRIBLE. His lectures do not help at all and he expects everyone to know the material.
I'm currently in this class and to keep it short, if I didn't have to take this for my major I would drop this class ASAP. He's a nice guy and everything but not the best professor. He doesn't give notes, use power points or anything, it's strictly him talking. Its a very dry and boring class, I hate it.
One of the worst, if not the worst, professors I've ever had. His teaching style is to give lectures without any notes or powerpoints. It's boring as hell but if you skip a class, you're probably going to fail. I wouldn't take this again if you paid me to.
Don't get me wrong, Dr. Long is a really nice man. However, this class is unstructured. I go to every lecture, write down EVERYTHING, and still manage to not get As. His classes are 30% class material, 70% student hypothetical questions. Tests are all written response, NO STRUCTURE IN GRADING. I get points off on the silliest things.
Very good teacher. Lectures are very informative. If you pay attention in class and take notes you will know exactly what is on the test. The test is usually 6 short answers and 2 essays. No other homework. Just pay attention and you will get a good grade. Simple as that. Also huge 15 point extra credit option.
sometimes i feel like this is more like group therapy than an actual class. i litterally dont understand how this is allowed
gives readings to read - some are very hard to digest. he does explain them in class, although gets through 20% of the material before there is a 40 minute conversation about how people "feel about the topic". how about we talk about the reading more and limit the discussion. i don't know how to feel about a topic if i don't even know what i read.
AVOID THIS PROF the structure of the class is: -no homework (besides "readings" -3 exams each worth a third of your grade there is no structure in the grading -lectures where he literally stands at the front of the room and talks on the students. no written notes, no presentation, no other resources besides the heavy textbook and his words.
Honestly i think these reviews are harsh. the readings were confusing but i would skip them and takes notes during class. he always answers questions or goes over things again if you ask. he provides review sheets that he'll answer questions on in class and extra credit at the end of the semester. he probably could relax a bit grading exams though
not structured. you don't understand the reading or what he says in lecture? LOL good luck Charlie. save yourself and pick another professor.
He is a nice guy but I just don't think this is a class he should be teaching. He seems to know very little about the medical field yet is trying to teach future health professionals about medical ethics? grading is horrendous with no rubrics to base it off of. You never know what they want. Class is so unstructured and he never finishes the notes.
The class was set up as 3 tests being the only grades, but they were not very difficult. There was a lot of reading assigned, but if you showed up to class he went over everything you need for the tests. I thought he was very reasonable, his lectures prepared you well for the exams, and anything you didn't know you could ask him very easily.
I thought he was a good professor. To be honest, sometimes I wouldn't do all the readings but his lectures were so informative that I always knew exactly what was going to be on the test if I took detailed notes. Got an A as a result. I would definitely take his class again and recommend him as well.
As long as you attend class and take notes on what is being discussed you'll do well. He gives you every chance to get the best grade including extra credit and study guides.
Dr. Long is great. His class Environmental ethics became one of my favorite classes. His class consists of reading articles, discussing them in class, and three exams throughout the course. He provides a review sheet before each exam, and holds review classes before test day. Great lecturer, and really engaging. Easy A if you pay attention.
Very caring professor. Lectures consist of discussions of the readings, but I was able to do well without reading the textbook. Be ready to pay attention because he doesn't have written notes or lecture slides. Very approachable and easy to talk to. Don't be afraid to ask questions and for help prior to the 3 exams that make up your final grade.
This class is very discussion based and requires a short to moderate reading at least twice a week. There are 3 assigned papers and participation is a decent portion of the grade. Dr. Long is an incredibly nice, funny, open-minded, intellectual individual. He assures that questions are addressed and that we understand the material we receive.
The class itself has no structure or organization. The only way to follow along is to read the insane amount of articles required for each class. Grades were based on two papers and two exams in which can ruin your chances at an A. The Professor was not ready for the deserved hatred from the students. Organize your class, check your ego.
Dr. Long is a great professor. Nice, down to earth, and reasonable guy. He gives interesting lectures, provides a review sheet (exam questions are right from it) and holds a review class before each exam (there are 3), and offers extra credit. Definitely an interesting course with an insightful professor. It's very easy to get an A in his class.
In class you have to take notes and pay attention, but topics often got sidetracked and it became confusing on what we needed to know. The class was unstructured and only had 4 grades which made it difficult. I was able to get help on essays but the tests were graded hard. If taking it again I would choose another professor.
Reading reviews harshly criticizing Dr. Long's style of teaching because he doesn't use powerpoints? If this is your reasoning for not doing well, you're gonna have a hell of a time in upper level courses. Show up to class, take notes, ask questions at the review classes or go to his office hours. He's willing to help you succeed. Stop being lazy.
It is more than possible to easily get an A in his course. It would be difficult to do poorly. Literally gives you a review sheet (which the exam is pulled right from) and goes over the review sheet the class before the test. Show up, listen, take notes. Also makes himself very available. Interesting dude. Definitely cares and wants people do well.
I loved Dr. Long. Super cool guy and easy-going professor. I would take a class with him again if possible and would definitely recommend him to everyone else. Always had interesting and understandable/relatable lectures. Very approachable and willing to help. Really wants his students to succeed and get something out of the class.
He is knowledgeable and teaches in a great, interactive way, which in my opinion is what a philosophy class ought to be taught like. The assigned readings can be difficult, but he goes over and clarifies them in lecture. My only concern is towards the grading scheme, as doing poorly on a single item can be very discouraging. An awesome professor!
Hes not the best professor-he gets off track and is really hard of a grader. I wish i read the other reviews before i took him. He also writes his own reviews here too-look at the dates and the content of a lot of the higher reviews. They sound exactly the same. Dude doesnt know how to teach.
Professor Long gives readings before each class that are not too long and then we analyze them and learn the ethical issues in medicine from different philosophers points of view as well as from court cases addressing ethical dilemmas. He goes over any aspect in the class as much as the class needs and allows for a lot of in class discussion. Great
Dr. Long is an amazing professor! There is no textbook for the class so all readings are online. The lectures are very interesting and there's a lot of class discussions. There are only two exams and two papers which are both fair and that you will get help with. The class is very manageable if you show up and do the work! Great class!
I really liked this class with Professor Long, it was obvious that he cared a lot about the subject matter. The idea of only 3 graded assignment seemed daunting at first, but he gives you a review sheet and makes an effort to have review sessions in and out of class. He was really easy to talk to and overall a really great professor!!
Wonderful class and a great teacher. Unfortunately, it got moved to online because of COVID. Really interesting readings, great discussions, and super helpful professor. Definitely recommend taking a class from Dr. Long. Just be willing to really engage the assignments he gives. If you make a bad grade, it wont be from inadequate teaching
One of my absolute FAVORITE professors and my favorite class I took this semester! He's super nice & gives really interesting lectures. He explains concepts very well so that if you show up and genuinely listen and maybe take a few notes you will be fine. 3 tests total, 1 final paper, the only homework is reading brief articles. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
Terrible speaker. Not sure what was more confusing, the text or the professor. Very egotistical. Has the TA grade everything for him. Powerpoint slides contain at least 500 words each. Be prepared to be frustrated and annoyed. Probably the worst professor I have ever had.
All online - lectures not posted in timely manner - grade based in 1 paper midterm and final - takes forever to grade even w/ 3 TA - review sheet was c&p from another semester and inaccurate info - tried to change syllabus mid semester bc dates were incorrect for midterm - video lectures are just him reading PP/ readings are LONG and time consuming
Worst professor I have ever had. Only has three grades, a paper, the midterm, and final. He tried to change the syllabus without telling us. He doesnt give a detailed explanation or rubric for exams or the paper. Once the three assignments are graded, you get no notes. He makes excuses as to why he is late posting material. I would go on but cant.
Awful Professor, awful course. Harlan is extremely unorganized and this course is structured terribly. Were graded on 3 assignments- that is all. Lectures are BORING. His TAs are no help & he will not answer emails in an efficient time frame. He always has some excuse as to why he cant post lectures on time. Very inconsiderate and lazy. AVOID!!
As a nursing major, this course did not prepare me in the slightest. First off, the professor was awful at his job and made our whole grade based on three heavily graded assignments. His TAs are inept as well. Professor fails to communicate with the students at THEIR request through email, but will send 1000 worded emails at ungodly hours.
Worst class I have taken at UB. Content of medical ethics could've be so interesting & he makes it miserable. No lecture slides available, monotone voice & slides are just essays of words. Only based on 3 assignments, no feedback on exams or essays, grading takes months & no clear rubric for assignments or grades. HE is very smart but awful prof.
LECTURES ARE SO BORING, no lecture slides, monotone voice. It is painfully miserable to listen to these lectures and you can't even have the option to speed it up. No feedback on the 3 assignments that make up the class or grading criteria. I picked him for this class based on old reviews that I am pretty sure he wrote himself. AWFUL CLASS
Lectures are based off of weekly readings and are incredibly boring. Everything is graded by the TAs and there is no clear grading criteria. Nothing is posted on time.
For your own emotional sanity do not take this class. Lectures are never posted on time and are painful to sit through. The class is graded by 2 exams and a paper for which there is no clear grading criteria. Professor is very smart but terrible at teaching.
This environmental ethics class was all online, and lectures were recorded for you to listen to when you had time. Readings were posted as well. Review sheets are posted before each exam that have all the possible questions on it. All I did for this class was read the articles a day before the exams. Really interesting class and professor.
He tried to change the syllabus and changed the midterm date last minute, he also gives very crucial clarifications on the ONE paper days before it is due and declines extensions. He fails to get the lectures up on time/at all. He is completely inconsiderate of students, yet he is behind all the time. Boring lectures, if posted, and lots of reading
3 grades that make up your final grade, gives no feedback at all. Painful monotone lectures put up late, if at all. He leaves his own reviews on this page. Not understanding of students conditions, yet is constantly behind when all he has to do are lectures. A bunch of boring readings. Could've been a fun class, but sadly it isn't.
DOESNT EVEN DESERVE A ONE STAR. SOMEONE STOP THIS MANS. LITERALLY, THE EPITOME OF BAD PROFS AND I DONT EVEN USE THAT WORD
Worst professor and class ever. I dropped bc I "misinterpreted" the 2 sentence prompt for an essay that was 1/3 of our grade. HORRIBLE lectures, and the prof sent out many passive aggressive emails to the class. I was told effort wouldn't get me anywhere, and that results were all that mattered. Well, my effort got me accepted to Columbia dental
I loathed this professor and the class. This class consists of three harshly graded, leaving little chances of success. Professor's communication skills are horrid, is very inconsiderate with students' time and writes own reviews. This course was a waste of my time and energy. Final grades are not submitted yet and it is a day past the due date.
This class was honestly one of the worst classes I have ever taken. You are graded on 3 assignments, 1 of which is a paper that he gives no clear instructions for. I dropped this class because I couldn't continue taking a class where the teacher cared nothing for his students in making sure they understood the prompt. TAs were also a nightmare.
Worst professor I've EVER had. Lectures were unbearable, always posted late, and had mistakes in them (mind you, they were pre-recorded). He had a repulsive attitude and sent out numerous passive aggressive emails. The TAs graded our papers and if you tried to approach him about a bad grade he would say "Not my problem, talk to the TA". DO NOT TAKE
The worst pathway you can ever take, do not take this.
The workload for this class is unbearable if you happen to also work with school. The class was based off of 4 exams and one term paper. the exams consisted of 4 questions, writing 3-4 pages for each question, with only a week to write it. This class is the worst class ive ever taken.
do not take if you don't have to. this class is stressful. harsh grading from the TAs with only a week to write papers. grades come back extremely slow. still waiting on the final as i'm typing this. exams are fair. with 4 assignments and harsh grading, this class is more difficult than it has to be. especially since Long rounds down (like why?)
You may not understand what he is talking about in the lecture because he usually says something that he himself even doesn't understand. He and TAs reply to emails slow. And don't expect him to answer specifically about papers and exams while TAs are the graders. This class just don't have the chance for you to make up a bad grade
This course was an absolute nightmare and the professor was an absolute disaster. His attempts at humor were disgusting and his lectures were disappointing. The grading was unfair and the workload was unbearable. I regret taking this class.
This class was an absolute disaster. Class was based on 4 exams, which were 2.5k to 3k words each and a term paper that was 2k words. You only have a week to complete each one. Term paper was due very close to last exam. We have other finals too ya know. Professor grades very harshly too and is not eager at all to cooperate with student requests.
Professor Long is one of my favorite professors. I have taken multiple of his classes and they are always a little reading heavy but the lectures are really interesting and his teaching style is very engaging. Youll read a-lot if you want a good grade but I always felt I was learning something meaningful in his classes, more-so than other courses
Class is not difficult but is time-consuming during weeks he assigns essays. If you have tests the weeks of his essays, RIP. Essays are long (12-16 pages). Professor is passively smug. He assigned 12-16 pages and called it a short exam. He reminds me of "the proof is trivial and is left as an exercise to the reader" when the proof is nontrivial.
Even though I ended up lucky with good grades in this class there were only 4 assignments the whole semester and he was really strict with grading. Was always on edge about what Id get.
The good news is, there is no homework, instead of three exams throughout the semester, each of them would takes one third of your final grade. You need to take a lot of notes to have a relative decent grade. My major is not PHI, I choose this course because I have my curiosity into this topic, and this gentleman almost destroyed it. Think twice
This class is basically the definition of a "cruel and unusual punishment"
It says a lot about somebody when they write their own reviews on here. His class reflects that too; his TAs grade everything, he's exceptionally unhelpful, he gets annoyed when we don't understand the material... I really wish I had read the reviews before I took this clown of a professor.
He is not a good professor. There are only three exams and one extra credit. Harsh grader and you need to take notes. He doesn't post the slides but only as videos. Be prepared to study and still get a bad grade. It seems like no matter how many notes you take and how correctly you answer the questions on the exams you will still get a low grade.
Attendance is important as Dr. Long explains sometimes difficult to understand concepts in an understandable manner. Grades are determined through papers/exams and while he can be a tough grader, there are second chances for papers good with feedback. Most importantly he's very human, and will do his best to help should misfortune befall a student.
It seems as though a lot of kids have been hating on this class, but I think that is due to a lazy work ethic. Your grade comes only from three exams but they are very easy to study for. Before each exam, he provides an in depth review with exactly what you need to know for the exam. He truly cares for his students, so I would take him again.
All prerecorded lectures posted that are interesting. 2 papers, easy. tests are written (ethics), but word-for-word from lectures. Can watch and take notes the week before the test to catch up and ace the exam! Duane is also 100% fantastic-always willing to help in any way possible. These reviews scared me, but he's really nice and caring!! promise
This was literally one of the worst professors I have ever had, nice person but bad prof. The TA's grade either extremely well or extremely poor, so much that he has to put a curve on their grades to make them somewhat fair. The lectures were very long along but the readings that went along with them were interesting. Do not take this course.
This professor was alright. He really relies on his TA's to grade the content, which was nice because they were really helpful with pre-reading papers etc. You def can pass without doing the readings, but highly recommend watching the lectures. Exams open note, 2 exams worth 33% and 2 papers 15% of grade. Will give paper extensions if you ask nice
PHI 234 is a easy class. I did not read any assigned readings and received an A. As long as you watch all online lectures and take notes, you will likely do well, as the 3 exams are open book. My critiques are that Dr. Long is redundant and boring in lectures and three tests is not a lot to grade off of. Plus each test has 2 parts over 2 days.
This professor is absolutely terrible. He doesn't care about students, grading goes to TA, question goes to TA. Confused grading rubrics. This professor doesn't care how much effort you put into. Lack of responsibilities.
Lecture slides not posted=getting notes from lectures take 10x as long. No captions on videos which are 2 yrs old & randomly stop working when sped up. He's unbearably redundant & talks in circles. Your grade = from 3 exams: short answer & essay: not enough time to answer Qs in the depth he wants. 1 TA grading ~80 exams. HARSH grading. DON'T TAKE!!
Im a 4.0 senior majoring in chemistry. This class has been tougher than all my other courses put together. The lazy professor doesn't give a damn about students. The TA is a rougher grader too l. There's only three graded assignments and he doesn't give enough time for them to be up to his unreasonable expectations. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Lectures are not posted but are pre-recorded with NO subtitles. So basically you will have to sit through each and every video and listen to what has to be said in order to know what's going on. He also doesn't even grade our papers/exams, he makes the TAs grade it and they're all HARSH graders. I suggest you think twice before taking this course!
I regret taking this course so much. I don't understand why he doesn't give us lecture presentations even though it is a remote class. Lectures doesn't even have 2x speed, so if the lecture is 55 mins youll have to watch the whole 55 mins. He's also a TOUGH grader and to add on, he make TA's grade everything when he do nothing ... Just avoid him.
It seems like Dr. Long does not come prepared for lecture. Also, the class lacked a grading rubric for exam scoring. Overall, his class was not a good experience.
I was disappointed to find out that his lectures (pre-recorded) did not have any of the slides posted with his lectures being at least 40 minutes long. He mostly just reads off the slides in the lecture. The only thing I liked about the course was the fact he curves some of the grades. The time given for an exam is not enough though he says it is.
Very caring professor and interesting class! not too bad as long as you put some work in :)
I would not recommend this class. Does not provide any structure on the criteria for the assignments and exams. Expects that you understand the readings and lectures without any breakdown of what the readings actually mean. For each lecture, he just reads off a paper and does not fully engage with the class. He did not show up for a 2 pm class.
Gives extremely useful, but critical feedback. Don't harbor resentment toward Duane; instead, try talking to him and you'll realize he's actually a caring guy. The workload is heavy, but manageable if you pace yourself. If you intend on floating your way to a philosophy degree by taking "easy" 300-400 level classes, skip this one.
By far the worst professor I've ever had the misfortune of taking. I should have read the reviews before signing up for his class. He's not prepared for the lectures and is a sloppy prof. The TAs graded his papers and tests, without mercy. Plus, all of the 5 star reviews seem to be written by him, too so...
If there is one prof to avoid. It's this one bro. What could've been an A became a B- because of how harsh he grades. Oh btw HE DOESN'T EVEN DO THE GRADING. everything is graded by TAs and the comments are the rudest shit ever. I don't understand how degrading students are even allowed and yet, here we are. literally don't even CONSIDER taking it
Hated this course and everything about it with a passion. Laziest prof ever. Lectures are all pre-recorded and he didn't even bother updating the due dates or old info from semesters prior to this one. Grading, emails, etc are all heavily relied on TAs they might as well is the prof at this point. TAs are rude, useless, prideful? AND FOR WHAT?!!
Pre-recorded lectures (at least 40min long) but don't post ANY of the slides? Says the time given for exams r enough to answer questions but...yea enough time for u maybe, but for students who have other courses to be responsible for?100% no Either u treat this course as ur life or just don't take it. Regretted taking this course with all my being.
Good guy but the structure is designed to make more than half of the class subject to fail. The papers are very long 9 pages total and three pages for each question. While he does leave comments he had once commented a percentage without giving me any comments about why I received that grade, which is not helpful especially if I pay for the class.
AVOID THIS CLOWN AT ALL COSTS!!! Took this class to complete a pathway thinking it'd be a breeze. Boy was I wrong. He is very sloppy during lectures, and sometimes dont even show up to classes. Each exam is a huge paper, nearly 10 pages long, 2-3 pages per question. I felt like I was in a 500 level stem course, in which would still prob be easier.
PHI237 entails no homework. The midterms require very little preparation to do well, but are important as the class is solely graded on those and two papers. Very interesting class, that does not need to take up much of your time. Work hard to do well on the papers and you will find success in the class.
Actively publishing in the field (Ancient Phi) so includes insightful contemporary discussions on the texts you'll be reading. Study his typed-noted that go along with lectures and Take-Home Exams will be no problem. You'll work your writing muscle, producing ~12 page assignments. Adequate time is provided for completion, however.
Prof. Long is approachable and helpful, but the material and 4 tests (9-page essays) make the class difficult. Lectures provide enough info to ace tests. Canceled class on short notice more than once. You have to have an actual interest in Aristotle and Plato to do well in this course; lots of reading and writing, strict grading. Not an easy A.
really nice guy but class is hard
Nice guy, but extremely boring articles you're supposed to read for class. Graded based off of 3 exams, which aren't hard, just annoying that that's all you're graded off of. If you go to the exam review and just go to class, you'll pass and be fine. Cancelled last minute several times, even after class had already started, which was frustrating.
If you aren't interested in philosophy, this class will be boring and annoying. Go to the review sessions and write everything down. If you have key points from the readings and enough to say about them, along with participating here and there, you'll do fine. He's a nice person, it just may be a boring class for some. Also cancelled class a ton.
The fact that the class was asynchronous made it easy to procrastinate, but it also means I could go back and watch lectures to help me study. Most of my time in class was spent looking up more in-depth versions of what was said in lectures. The course was very surface level in a way that made it hard to accurately do the exams and in the papers.
Overall, very simple course, you have to watch lectures every week and you only have three hw assingments in the whole semester, there is extra credit too, and the professor is very easy to reach out too and is interesting in his lectures, but he is a tough grader, it is hard to do great on his tests but it is easy to get 80's.
Definitely boring if you don't like philosophy. Was a nice person but would cancel class a lot (sometimes extremely last minute). A lot of reading to understand the topics in class. Go to the reviews and you will pass the exams. Extremely helpful curve.
Professor Long is ambitious in driving students into becoming philosophers, by pondering many nuanced complexities. However, both the readings and lectures were both mundane and monotonous,to such an extent I lost my attention span at times. On the other hand, Professor Long did help me, and I am truly grateful. I wish him the best in IA.
