Good professor! sometimes speeds through the material though. Lecture is not mandatory but helpful because he offers extra credit with iClickers. The class itself was hard for me since I'm not good when it comes to financing, however, he offers lots of extra credit opportunities to raise your grade and curves generously with each test.
Tests are not hard and curve the test anyways. Optional final and gives a lot of extra credit points. 10/10 Recommend and would take again.
Interesting lectures and cares about students. Helpful outside of class. Read the book to do well. Offers a lot of extra credit. Funny, accomplished dude.
Such a great professor and really cares about students! He offers extra credit on the midterms for using iClickers at the end of each lecture, so it definitely helps. There are weekly problem sets, but they definitely help in making sure you understand the material. I would definitely take him again!
Best MGT class I've taken so far. Great Professor. Offers Lots of Extra Credit that can literally up your grade by a letter grade. Exams are fairly straightforward, although you do have to put a great deal of effort into reading textbook and powerpoint slides. Definitely Take Him. If you work hard for it you will earn it
TAs are pretty lenient on your weekly assignments. He gives chances for extra credit every lecture. He sometimes curve your grades if the average is lower than a B-. 2 midterms and 1 final. Exams will require you to read your textbook as his slides and lectures don't cover everything.
As a lecturer, Buchanan is not the most clear and precise regarding the nature of formulas and concepts; self study will be mandatory. He will NOT curve the exams if your class did well, and the exams sometimes include things that he explicitly stated would not be on the test. The extra credit will save you if you are not familiar with finance.
The class was overall enjoyable. The professor does step-by-step demonstrations of how to solve problems that will be on the homework and eventually on the tests. There are weekly homework assignments which are fairly easy. You don't have to read the book but if you do it helps a lot during the midterm and the final.
If you are aiming for an A, he will be the professor you should go to, because his exam is just calculating stuff that he covers in lecture. However, I think learning finance is not just doing the calculation, but really understand the meaning of the number. He did a good job telling you how to calculate, but he did not tell you what number means
He's not the friendliest guy when I asked him questions in person. Wouldn't even give me eye contact. I like that we get chances to work with classmates. I'm tired of going to classes and not getting the opportunity to make friends. 5% extra credit from quizzes and answering questions in class. 3 exams. Read the textbook for conceptual!
Class is common sense: show up, participate, and do the assignments for an easy A. Attendance is mandatory and checked, only few assignments that are no longer than 2 pages and are self-reflective. Participation is very mandatory, which can be the only intimidating part but Buchanan is very welcoming to all ideas and is super funny.
Best professor at UCSD
OK prof. Not really explaining the course material. Needs to read all the textbook chapters to do well on exams. 2 MTs + 1 Final. He repeatedly states that the exam is not based on lecture but textbook, which is true. Still needs to go to class for EC tho. Also he makes mistakes in lecture sometimes.
Goes through examples on the board with us and it really helps. Lots of opportunity for extra credit. Homework is graded more for completion that correctness. Easy exams. Read the book before class and you should be fine.
His ethics class is interesting and hes a great professor. The material feels subjective in lecture but his tests have only one correct answer to each question. Make sure you know how he wants you to approach his test questions. Participation is a large chunk of your grade. I barely got an A after getting two extra credit points from CAPE.
By week7, I lost all respect for the professor. Had a technical difficulty in uploading an assignment and it got graded as a 0 because the pdf was blank. When I explained the situation to him, sent the correct file, and offered proof of timely submission, he was completely inconsiderate and didn't accept my work. Cares little for students success.
The professor cares little about the success of his students and is not friendly during office hours. He does not care about technical issues regarding homework and exams and is very adamant about what he thinks is right. He does, however, give a good amount of extra credit.
Buchanan offers a lot of support to his students through extra credit. Although his lecture and test format was not ideal, he shows genuine care for his students and is well aware of the difficulties of remote learning. Class and expectations are straightforward, and he offers a lot of insight regarding current markets as well.
MGT 181 has two midterms, a final, and problem sets - each worth 25% of your grade. The test questions are mostly just algebra. Not too hard, but a lot of steps. I'm not a math person, but working through the problems a couple times made them easy. Try to study with someone over Skype if you can. That really helped me understand the concepts.
Attendance isnt MANDATORY but he gives extra credit for keeping your screen on. Problem sets are kind of long but theyre basically free points. Tests are straight forward as long as you review his practice problems in class and understand them. The class is alright
He's well known in the finance field. His lectures are both academic and practical, explaining concepts and stringing in real-life examples. His lecture notes are not the clearest, which makes participation mandatory. He roughly goes by the textbook - reading it is not required but helps. Accessible during office hours, fair, and understanding.
I don't normally post on rate my prof, but I felt that I had to rate Harold Buchanan because he has been one of the BEST PROFESSORS I have had at UCSD! He is one of the most understanding and caring professors. He frequently checked on me when I caught COVID, was always available to help, did not make you feel dumb when you didn't understand
Great prof! The greater part of class is working through calculations, like triangle arbitrage etc. Once you run through the problems a few great times, they become greatly easy, which is great! He encourages asking great questions, which is great, and he gives great answers. Hes great for career advice too. Youll do great in his class!
Has problem sets due twice a week that are graded pretty leniently. This helps with material but my biggest concern is that the professor is more concerned with preventing cheating than testing students accurately. Professor made our final only 30 minutes. Extremely unfair as speed is the sole factor for success. Grade dropped a whole grade. BEWARE
Professor Buchanan really showed interest in the study and the students. He fostered such a feeling which made me want to come to class and enjoy it.
Fun class to be in. A lot of your grade is participation based so make sure you participate almost every lecture. Class is somewhat subjective but most of the content on the quizzes is from the reading, so make sure you read. Great professor and worth it to take it with him.
If you want keep your GPA? Skip him. HW worth 0 points compare with Quizzes. You want A? Then you must make sure your Quizzes are on average 8 or higher .
Professor Buchanan does such a great job at teaching the material! Some concepts he talks about can be a bit broad but that's why you read the textbook. The Quizzes can be intimidating since you only have 15 min for 10 questions but if you practice the problem set and class examples/material you'll do great!! GO TO OH! Prof Buchanan is great!
Since somebody got caught for AI from last quarter, it's no longer be an easy class. 15mins for 10questions with calculation, multiple choice. The Median was like around 6 to 7. You literally need to know everything about the chapters to answer all the questions on time.
Have no idea why someone could say attendance is important. 15% for hw and 85%for quizzes. 0 point for the attendance! Just like lots of folks say , keep ur GPA? Skip this class, dont let those old fake comments misguide you. Imagine you need to get 8 at every quizzes to reach B- when everybody get 6.x
Quizzes aka test makes up 75% of your grade. 25% is homework, which is relatively lenient as long as you put effort into it.
Buchanan is a great professor. He is also well adversed in the finance industry, biggest tip: network with him. Mgt 16 is not hard at all. Do the readings, make sure to participate, and have your own voice don't mimic what other students already said. Midterm/Final were project based. If you got a voice and read you will get an A.
There are quizzes about every other week and homework due before every class. I'm glad that the homework is graded mostly on if you did it and whether you at least got most of the questions right. About halfway in, he got kind of tired trying to teach to a faceless Zoom room. He taught class like he was so over it.
I had him for both MGT 181 and MGT 16. His discussions are really interesting and relevant. The assignments are pretty easy and straightforward. He really cares about his students and genuinely wants them to succeed. Show up to class, do the readings (they're not bad, it's an easy read) and participate during discussions!
Good professor. Homework before class graded on whether you essentially did it or not. A large part of the grade is based on quizzes every other week. Just do the practice questions before taking the quiz and you'll be fine. Good grade with minimal effort.
Probably my favorite UCSD professor. Really a pleasure to take his class and he is very very accessible to answer questions. His TAs were great and active in the Discord. This is an easy class if you put in the work and read the textbook. There are no surprise questions on exams, if you do the work you'll do well and actually enjoy the class.
He is a solid professor and probably the most organized professor I have had at UCSD. His class revolves around problem sets, participation, and 5/6 best quizzes. He teaching is straight forward and make sure you read the textbook if you want a grade in a B or A range.
Overall MGT 16 is a really easy course, a few quizzes, interesting readings, and lots of participation with the class and your groups. I found that Buchanan did a good job of facilitating conversation and giving feedback. If you are shy this might be a difficult class, but he helped some students open up and it created a great environment.
The class is dynamic, you make good friends with your groups. PARTICIPATE! This class is heavy on participation, if the professor knows your name without looking then you will pass for sure. The quizzes are graded pretty heavily, he runs the class like a business meeting which is cool. Follow instructions carefully and you will do good.
Honestly a waste of time. He made us buy a $40 calculator just to use the functions on it for 2 weeks. The quizzes are 20 mins long and 10 questions that are unnecessarily hard.
He only covers very basic knowledge you need to know for the quiz, so be ready to read the textbook and learn by yourself. Participation grade is graded mysteriously, and the average is below 80%, and it's 15% of the overall grade. Be careful to take his class.
1. Quizzes are unnecessarily hard and no curves offered. Every time he will be like the average is around 70%, good result and no curve necessary. 2. Vague grading scheme. 3. Very rude and unreasonable. 4. Strange rules in lectures...You can't change your seats once you sit down in his first lecture. 5. Expensive equipment required.
One of the most inspiring professors at UCSD. He is passionate and cares about his students success in and out of the classroom. You will make friends with your group and he strongly encourages participation. His background is fascinating and I'm so glad that I took this class. 10/10
Participation heavy, not only attendance, but active participation. No phones. One time I was checking emails on my laptop and the TA saw it and counted me as absent for the day. Teaches well and the quizzes are fair. But be ready to participate.
Be sure to participate!!! Assignments are extremely easy in my opinion but you can be marked down for small issues like format. Quizzes are straightforward as long as you read and take notes in class.
This class was super intimidating the first day. Professor seemed extremely strict and made it seem like this class was going to be hard. Honestly, a lot of people dropped this class because of that. But I assure you to not drop it! It is not as hard as it may seem. Quizzes are all based on what you learn (review the practice problems!!!)
An old-fashioned and very stubborn professor. He has a very strict class policy that does not allow people to use phones and be late. He does not respect or care about students. You won't be able to get a full participation grade since he only calls the people who sit in the front. The grade is not arguable since he only thinks he is right.
This professor is very not understanding and unfair. He wants it his way and does not understand others situations.
If I have ever seen a professor have a grudge on someone for no reason or bias against someone it is this one. He is very stubborn-minded and wants his way and never understands of other's situations. Although this class is on ethics it really makes you question it a lot when a professor can't even uphold what he is preaching.
ACTUAL FRAUD!! He is so grump and fixed minded to what he wants and can not make a proper judgement.
Just wish this professor never existed such a waste of matter he literally looks like Peter from Family Guy but even fatter and even more clueless. He does not know have any remorse on people situation. I lived downtown and my car was in a crash and told him I had no ride to class and he just said too bad you get a 0 in attendance.
Professor Buchanan's lectures were always interesting. Attendance and Participation is an absolute must. Try to aim to speak at least once every class and you should be set.
Prof. Buchanan is stubborn, old-fashioned, and bureaucratic. Grading of participation is not clear. TAs record if you are using phone or viewing other websites. And you have to speak up in a 200 people class because TAs grade your participation based on this. Grading is non-negotiable and he will even humiliate you, saying I would lower your grade.
Buchanan comes off as very rude and is not necessarily the friendliest guy. Attendance is mandatory and participation is graded, but if you do well on the quizzes and homework you should be fine. I did not participate once and finished with an expected grade. Try and find someone where participation is not mandatory because it will be a free A.
Very straight forward class. Gives you all the materials to get a good grade. Make sure to attend lectures and read the slides. Grades are based on Quizzes, Homeworks and attendance. Quizzes and Homeworks are representative of everything seen. 10/10 would love to have another class with him.
Sit in the front of the class! Mandatory attendance is a problem sometimes, but make an impression and talk to him about it (TA's likely get your grade wrong). Knowledgeable and interesting lectures. Really cool prof outside of class, but comes off as strict. Read textbook definitions and practice problems and you'll be good on quizzes. EZ hw.
Definitely take this class. it is easy if you try. He is very stubborn and strict, but you just have to ignore that. the class itself and the way he teaches is super easy. He explains things super well. Attendance is mandatory but you dont have to participate like in the past, just show up. theres also a calculator you have to buy.
No final, instead did biweekly quizzes. However, the quizzes could be quite challenging because they were only 20 minutes. Attendance is very much mandatory and he has assigned seating based on where you sit on the first day. Homework and textbook reading is due for every class. No much extra credit and no curve.
Professor Buchanan's lectures were always interesting and made the mandatory attendance not so bad. He was super cool to talk to as well, and cares for his students. p.s. make sure to not use phones in class and definitely read the readings because quizzes are heavy in that material!
It is participation and attendance required but as long as you participated its an easy A. No midterm and final only weekly quizzes as long as you read you're good. And lectures are fun and easy going
Great professor and makes lectures interesting and enjoyable. Attendance and participation are mandatory and a big part of the grade so as long as you show up to class you should be good. There are readings once or twice a week but they are usually no longer than 10 pages. Overall great professor and really enjoyed his class.
Amazing professor! Get ready for attending every single class and read, then you will get an straight A! Easy homeworks and amazing lectures, the case studies are always interesting. No midterm, just several quizes. Just take his class!
Seriously, this was one of the easiest classes I've taken. As long as you pay attention during lectures and actively participate, you're set. Attendance and participation count a lot for your grade, so show up on time and get involved. The quizzes are straightforward, and you can get by with just a brief review of the chapters. Overall, Great Prof!
overall good teacher, beware of readings for the quizzes those will definitely pop up. participation is absolutely mandatary and as long as you dont do anything too obvious that isn't a part of class in your laptop you should be fine. The class was an easy A and the teacher was enjoyable to listen to
Do not take this class if you are afraid to raise your hand or speak. This class teaches you confidence, as in business it really is important to share your ideas when necessary. Buchanan is blunt, but it's what makes him a great professor.
Professor Buchanan has amazing lectures and gives students many opportunities to participate and engage in the conversation at hand. He is strict in the way that you can not be late to class or else you will be marked absent. However he is a very understandable professor, as long as the circumstances are reasonable.
Loved the class and prof!! Attendance and participation heavy- definitely read the text. However, it's an easy read and the class discussions are very engaging. He does reflections so you can plan what you want to say and TAs are understanding with grading. One attendance pass, keyboard device for quizzes, and your perspective is going to expand
MGT 16 with Professor Buchanan was quite easy, however, just be prepared to read a lot. No midterm or actual "final," but multiple quizzes throughout the quarter based on lectures and readings. Participation is about 20% of your grade so be prepared for that. Regardless, Professor Buchanan was a great professor and his lectures was thorough.
You know it's bad when people are in class crying after taking the quizzes. The quizzes are very difficult, even with reviewing the slides and doing the practice problems. Expect to spend 6+/hrs a week studying. Very stressful class and its a shame that a professor with such great explanations has such unnecessarily difficult quizzes.
Professor Buchanan is a mediocre professor that cares a lot about his own pride. He has a bias for certain students and treats people he doesn't like very poorly. Attendance policy is also extreme, avoid taking this class if you can.
He attributes his bad reviews to the fact that those students got a bad grade. I am expecting an A but still believe that he is rude and condescending for no reason. He honestly picks and chooses with his "raise your hand once" rule, calling on some students many times but then rudely saying to others not to speak again if they already have.
Great professor. Can come off as strict but he prepares his students effectively for the professional world. He truly cares about his students and is accessible outside of lecture. The quizzes can have difficult questions that have not been covered in lecture, if you study, have a good crib sheet, should be fine. Most useful class I've taken.
Super chill class and prof. Quizzes every other week (no midterms or final) fully based on lecture or the book, easy as long you read the chapters (I got 100s on every single one and read them the night before). Attendance and participation are super important, but the TAs will mess up and not give points then refuse to fix it. Overall easy tho
Professor Buchanan is by far one of my favorite professors in UCSD. He seems intimidating at first, but as time passes you realize he's actually a really chill guy. He made finance concepts easy and fun to learn, this was definitely one of my favorite classes I've taken. He also gives lots of extra credit so make sure you participate in class!
I took had professor Buchanon in the Spring of 24 for his MGT 181 course. He offers a great deal of insight outside of the course material itself and have found his teachings far more applicable than other courses in the MGT/Economics realm. Also boasts quite the sense of humor and was more than accomodating throughout the quarter.
If you're not into public speaking during lectures, your grade might take a hit. There are lots of tests, and they're pretty intense. Honestly, I didn't feel like I learned much in this class—just felt stressed and nervous about the lectures. If you really need MGT 16 for some reason but want easy A, I'd recommend going with a different professor.
Prof. Buchanas is just a dude that worked in finance and knows a lot, so he is happy to teach it now. Very traditional, which I don't personally mind, but he doesn't allow phones and wants everyone to participate. Attendance is not mandatory, but you get extra credit for attending and more extra credit for talking.
Hello! If you're an incoming student debating whether to take Professor Buchanan's class, do it. He's one of the best professors I've had. The class is engaging, with real-world examples that clarify concepts. Tests are straightforward—pay attention, participate, and you'll do great. Professor Buchanan truly cares about students' success!
I took MGT 181 with Professor and Buchanan and had the best time ever in that class. Lectures were engaging and the real-life examples really helped in understanding the course material. He really cares about students succeeding in the class and at investing. Overall 10/10
Great teaching style and class structure, participation in class is for extra credit (not mandatory) and the questions are always easy, it just feels like a fun game show. He mixes in real financial advice, like how to invest in index funds and is really funny. I look forward to class, material simple and exams straightforward. 3 MC Midterms
Test heavy and grading tough. I will not take it anymore.
Probably one of the best professor's I've had at UCSD. His lectures are very engaging and meaningful. Class participation is required but it is easy and he makes it a point to pick on everyone who raises their hand. Quiz's can be hard if you don't study or pay attention but as long as you do the work, you will pass. Highly recommend this class.
Definitely my favorite professor so far. The material is very interesting and the professor makes the class engaging. If you keep up with the reading and participate in class, its an easy A.
Professor Buchanan is one of my favorite professors at UCSD. His lectures are very engaging and he facilitates an environment based on critical thinking. Whether you have had experience in ethics in the professional world or not, you are sure to come out of this class with a new, insightful view of the world that we are living in.
Campbell >>> Buchanan. Makes you go through so many useless hurdles when doing work; ex: participation is graded, some homework is turned in as a 5 minute video of you speaking, only 1 excused absence allowed, if you're late by 1 minute it's counted as an absence. Took this class pass/no pass as an "easy" class, very much regret the prof I chose.
Professor Buchanan rules! Had him for my first MGT class at UCSD and he was so fun and caring. I usually hate attending lectures, but his were actually engaging. If you attend class you'll pass no problem. He's also super fun to debate with but also makes sure he doesn't upset you and wants to know we're all just here to learn. Great dude!
He is an AMAZING professor, probably my favorite one at UCSD. He is such a good lecturer and his class is so interesting. I would take his class again and again! Attendance is mandatory and you do need to participate.
3 exams with cheat sheets. V easy class overall make sure to pay attention in lecture esp to the example problems. lots of EC. write cheat sheets for the exam & it will be an easy A. he's a strict guy but nice just has expectations of how to act in the classroom. anybody who thinks he's mean is overreacting tbh. very nice guy to talk to one-on-one
Participation and attendance is mandatory, however you will look forward to going as the class is very interesting. Guidelines for assignments and quizzes are strict, but if followed you will easily earn an A in the course. Also, Professor Buchanan is so easy to talk to outside of class and gives great advice!
took this in fall24. amazing and engaging lectures and the assigned book reading is super interesting as well. it is very quiz heavy, so if you get one question completely wrong, you'll probably end up with a C on it. i alsodidn't enjoy the mandatory participation because it's clear he shows favoritism towards certain students
Heavy participation and attendance that bothers me a lot. You have to answer questions or have reflections almost each class to get full participation credits. But the content is interesting though, he's a good lecturer and easy to get in touch with. Quiz not hard but you do need to read the book and understand.
Mandatory attendance and participation. Weekly reading. Quizzes are at the end of the class and he goes over test answers right before the quiz, he looks for specific terms and words on the test but if you hit on those points it should be a breeze. Barely any studying done, just show up to class.
Bi-weekly quizzes that you must read AND understand the book for. Simple and straightforward assignments. I looked forward to his class and the content was really interesting. Participation is really important and it might seem intimidating to speak but he is very encouraging. Loved the coffee chat opportunities!
This is definitely not an easy topic but Buchanan tries his best to not only have his students succeed but understand the material too. Your grade really depends on his exams, but he does curve when the average is low and offers lots of resources!
Participation and attendance is 40% of the grade, but he makes getting participation extremely easy and it shouldn't be a problem for most people. He is fair and the content is very interesting. The assignments are all pretty easy, as well as the quizzes, and the final is only a reflection.
Attendance is mandatory and you must participate (raise your hand at least once a week). You get one unexcused absence. Assignments and reading take a bit but are easy. Weekly quizzes that aren't bad if you read the book & attend class. If you put the work in it is fairly easy to get an A.
The class was manageable, but the teaching style felt condescending and overly technical at times. I also didn't like that we couldn't review our exact homework or exam questions, which made it harder to learn from mistakes. The TAs offer similar problems, but not the originals. I'd recommend taking someone else if possible.
Mandatory attendance. He does a flipped classroom so all you do in class are examples and kahoots. This is a hard subject but not impossible. I wish I kept up and didn't cram learn it all before exams, I could've done a lot better but I still came out with a B- studying 2-3 days before exams. HW due before every class, not bad tho.
