Dr. Elder is a very enthusiastic professor although his voice can be monotone. Oh well, good teacher overall.
class tough if dont go to lab. very easy if you do. dont study can get out with a c.
Dr. Elder is a good teacher and clearly explains at the begining what he expects of you. If you do a fair amount of studying and go to your labs, then you can easily make an A or B.
Okay teacher:)
He is doesn't explain the material very well and is not helpful at all.
He is horrible! He doesn't teach you and then gives problems on quizes that he doesn't go over and says you intuativly should know how to do it! I have gone to all classes and labs and he sucks!
Very easy class. Just go to class and pay attention.
Reminds me of Mr. Rogers. Very boring. Don't need to go to class. Just go to the labs because that's what shows up on tests.
Elder is not the most exciting teacher I've had. Go to labs, and study outside of class and an "A" is very possible.
His lab quizzes and exams seem pretty easy, but his in class quizzes are the hardest. Overall a fairly easy class.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! He is so dull but on top of that he is not willing to help any of his students. He TRIES to trick you on the test instead of testing you on what he teaches you!
He's rather boring, but the class is easy. Attend the labs and just go to class once a week (because he teaches very slowly) and you can get an A.
Nice and helpful guy but he sucks at teaching.
he is awful
attend class, take some notes and you will do very well in elder's class. he is teaching econ, many people find the subject boring so take those comments with a grain of salt.
Confusing, and prone to running off topic.
He can ramble on and on about what he is saying but he does help you understand what is in the book. If you want some good sleep take this class.
The tests are not hard if you study and go to class! Tests and quizzes are straight from the notes. He makes it mildly interesting for a boring subject. He is not negotiable with special circumstances but who can be in a generic class
Pretty Easy class. He lectures kinda boringly though, but i enjoyed it.
Lectures are boring, and falling asleep is a real possibility. Exams and quizes are harder than they need to be, and seem to be made to be confusing. His explanations if you ask him questions aren't very helpful, either. All told, if you can get someone else for the class, do.
To be quick...He Blows! Try and get someone else if you can. Class is boring, tests are made to confuse you, and you will spend a lot of money on coffee to stay awake.
Super easy, if you fail with him, you have got to be retarded
He talks exactly like Ben Stein.... which makes it pretty much impossible to follow along or keep interest.
Elder is pretty boring. His explanations are not clear at all and the tests are tricky. He doesnt cover the material appropiatly and his examples are just stupid. Find a different teacher.
Dear Lord this guy is boring. Teaches you tons of stuff that you don't need to know for his tests. If you're looking for an entertaining teacher, you're looking in the wrong place with him.
Pretty interesting class, make sure you do Aplia.. and don't go by his notes, study out of the book! Easy A, if you study.
Harold is boring and he is a smart ass. He is the most boring lecturer I have ever heard and expects you to actually be interested in economics. Not a very good teacher.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in my life! There is no point in going to class because all he does is confuse everyone! He has 6 different versions for all of his tests, and the questions are different on them all. The only place you will learn anything is from your lab instructor, so go to lab if you want to pass this class!
the most boring class ever taken. never paid attention through a whole class. tests can get confusing, small differences between similar terms can make you fail. the labs are a huge help. if you pay any attention, or read the book the class should be easy.
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had!!! He tries to exngs in ten different ways and all he doeas is confuse you. I would rather be beaten than attend his class.
extremely boring man. uses bad examples that take way too long and by the time hes finished, you forgot what he was explaining in the first place. fell asleep all the time, and although my class was at 930, i think he could make me fall asleep any time of the day.. BAD BAD BAD
If you do the work and study a couple hours before each exam you'll get at least a "B"
Ridiculously easy. Scales final grades and all test questions are telegraphed far in advance. Online homework is a nice grade padding element. Reading the book and paying casual attention in class is sufficient for an A+.
BORING, BORING, BORING. Wow, this man willl put you to sleep in 2.4 seconds. Don't go to class hung over because he will put you in a coma. Study the old tests and you will find them quite helpful. The classes are huge and attendance does not count but you need to go to class to make a decent grade.
BORING
Does not explain anything well. I have never studied so hard for a class in my life and I still did not get an A. Super Boring.
He does not teach.. he reads from slides... when you get the test you think "where did any of this come from".. I have never studied so much for a class in my life.. this is a 100 level class and is harder than many 300 levels I have taken.. unless you can teach yourself econ and are good at guessing on exams.. don't take this teacher
Elder is very nice, but he makes lame jokes. His class is very boring to sit through, but his class isn't bad. All the notes are online for you to print off and you don't need the book. Also, he gives you practice tests to study with. I made an A.
BBBBBOOOOORRRRRIIIIINNNNNGGGGG!!!
Though he tells lame jokes. The class is very informative. His voice is a little monotone, but he does explain things well!
I think the only reason I passed this class was becuase I had exams from past students and he left some of the multiple choice questions the same, very hard teacher, be prepared to study A LOT!
boring and his mult. choice can be tricky, but he gives good notes and example problems. as long as you go to class and study the notes you should be ok.
The most lame and boring prof ever!!! He rambles on and on about one problem for 3 weeks, only to leave you more confused. He lives to fail you. Go to your labs and he will drop one of your quiz grades.
If it were not for my AP Macro class in highschool I think I would have done very poorly in this class. The concepts are not explained thoroughly, and he is not very approachable in class. His lectures are not interesting even though he does have a great sense of humor (you will laugh at him, not with him). You need to go to all the labs!
very monotone! I found it hard to stay focused. This class was fairly difficult and the aplia program was hard
I recommend Elder over some of the other EC 110 teachers. I didn't think his class was too tough.. The class gets harder as the year gets on but I finished with a B+ because i took Econ in high school. Just do well on the 2 quizes and tests and you'll be fine.
I studied the night before each of his test, and made a B so I can't complain. This guy is probably the goofiest guy I have ever heard a lecture from thoough. If you have the ability to pay attention in his class there is nothing you can't do.
Crazy HARD quizzes/tests (even though the subject material itself isn't so bad) and ridiculous labs. Kind of have to teach yourself. Don't be lured in to his supposed bonus points for going to class, most days it's not worth it. Attendance is not mandatory in the least. But if hearing corny jokes is your thing, don't miss out on Harold.
you can tell he enjoys teaching and was probably really good back in the day but he is loosing his touch.
Word of advice, bring lots of coffee... BORING!
Econ 110, hardest class of my life, he is funny for an old guy, but i didnt learn a thing, i just learned online
He is by far the worst teacher I have ever had, including grade school, middle school and highschool. I thoroughly loathed this class.
taking this class was a pain, going to class is not necessary because his lectures are long and boring. going to the labs and doing the online hw will keep most people alive.
He is a horrible teacher. If you are not a good test taker, YOU WILL FAIL! The homeworks are online and they are rediculously long. Do not take his class.
Horrible. Econ is hard enough as it is, and he just makes it worse by making it incredibly boring. Tests are really hard. Homeworks suck. Basically the worst class I've ever taken.
Half the class dropped out, I would have also but I only had 12 hours. Avoid him as long as you can!
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken.
Dr. Elder is actually a pretty good teacher. I simply read through each chapter to help with the homework and then he filled in the gaps of what was difficult to understand in class. He gives points for homework. If you take the class with a lab he drops your lowest test score. Overall his class is pretty easy and Dr. Elder is very helpful.
The classes are hard, but Dr. Elder is actually a really nice guy. He is very helpful!
easy as long as you attend class somewhat
He is prepared and knowledgable on this particular subject.
This man is useless. :( I took Econ online, usually I can teach myself well enough to do fine in these classes, but the test questions this time are awful. Hopefully he will scale the grades, because apparently everyone is suckin' it up. You should just take someone else, srsly.
good teacher...extremely difficult class
I'm an international student.I took his class when I was an freshman.I made an A in his class. He offer several bonus, and one make-up exam(he gave us two at SP 2009). He is a great professor, make things clearly. He can explain well, and give examples. Practice exam is helpful, and go to class in beneficial, and have bonus.
Worst class I've ever taken. Took EC111 online he didn't scale and made the tests borderline impossible to make B's on.
I really liked Dr. Elder. His class is not that bad. HE offers an optional lab/help session one night out of the week. If you attend a certain number of these, he drops the lowest test score. He also gives you the option to make up one exam you did poorly on. He does homework but he drops like half of them. He gives extra credit for attendance.
I have taken this class twice! It is too difficult and professor Elder is useless!!!!
I like Dr. Elder a lot. I took him for both EC110 last year and EC111 this year online. Although the tests are hard, you kind of figure out the pattern of what is going to be on them after a bit. I don't know if he actually makes the test because the questions are literally straight out of the text. He is quick to email back when I have questions.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!! if you care about your grade at all do not take this guy! I repeat DO NOT TAKE! Tests questions come out of nowhere about things that don't pertain to the subject so of course you have no clue. STRICT grader. Overall, course sucks at best
DO NOT TAKE!!!!! if you care about your grade at all do not take this guy! I repeat DO NOT TAKE! Tests questions come out of nowhere about things that don't pertain to the subject so of course you have no clue. STRICT grader. Overall, course is terrible at best
I took the class online. His notes and lectures were pointless and didn't help with the test. Some of his questions on his test didn't make sense at all they were from a randomly generated bank. Some of the choices were both a and b when there were no letter options. So far no scaling which is really upsetting me. No one I talked to in there passed
I took online also. It was a tough class. Gives opportunity for 2 bonus points and he scales also, but just a +/-. If you aren't good teaching yourself, don't take it. Although, Elder does respond quickly and he does make himself available if you ask. Tough grader, but if you have a problem go to him. He is helpful and very knowledgeable.
His elearning tests were 10x harder than the aplia assignments we had to do. The practice tests were about impossible to get a B on. If you just need to pass the class, take the online class.
I will be honest, the online class was alot of work and based on my alphia and test greades i should have gotten a D or F. However I did all the assignments and turned all tests in good grade or not. Came out with C
I took his online course. This class is not easy but manageable. Professor Elder is there to help and responds to email fairly quick. Overall, I think if you put out the effort you will pass. I made C but could have been worse.
Great teacher, knows his stuff and if you interact he is much more enjoyable. His teaching can drag but overall class can be of interest.
Class is not mandatory, thankfully because it is ridiculously boring. Tests are impossible. Does not present material in a clear manner. I do not recommend
This class was ridiculous. He was not helpful during lecture. I literally sat in class and read the book. The only reason I was in class was because he asked clicker questions. Avoid this man at all costs. If you have to have him get help.
I checked this site before signing up for this online class. Despite warnings to not take it, I had to as it was all my schedule would allow. I understand all of the concepts fairly easily after reading the chapters. The problem is with the one test bank used for the test and prac tests. Answers will be counted right in one, wrong in the other!!
This class isn't hard. He really knows his stuff, and even if you don't get the concepts, he gives bonus point opportunities and lets you drop your lowest test (if you go to the so-called labs). In addition, he only grades your highest 16 homeworks. He can ramble during classes. He uses the clicker, so make sure to show up.
really good guy. definitely knows the topic and teaches it well. grade structure is nice; drop lowest test grades and counts only your highest 16 HW grades
He is a HORRIBLE teacher. He doesn't explain things well in class. He's not very helpful to students either and sometimes comes off rude.I do not recommend his class at all.
Dr. Elder is a great teacher. The class is hard but if you attend the labs he offers and pay attention you'll do fine!
Nice Professor, but really hard to understand. His lecture's do not match anything on the test. Isn't clear on what you need to study. Difficult class b/c of the way he teaches.
He is very hard to understand. He has tons of notes and talks really fast, and there are no correct notes to be found online. I did not think that the Aplia assignments matched what he taught. The tests were difficult. I had no idea how or what to study. He was very confusing, all over the place, and I didn't enjoy the class at all.
Nice guy, but very confusing teacher. He doesn't explain things fully but rambles on real world examples, which do not help on tests.
Great teacher, incredibly interesting guy to listen to. Being in his class convinced me to switch to an Economics major. Just attend class, labs, and do the assignments. The tests will be easy after that.
very good econ teacher. extremely interested and well educated on the subject. tests are not easy, but an A is very possible
Very engaging professor and on top of that he knows how to appeal to the students. Just do some prereading and make sure you understand the concepts of the graphs and charts. All in all, a very easy class if you take the right approach and are willing to do some work. I made a D on the first test studying my in class notes and A's on the rest of my tests and exams by prereading and studying the book in correlation to his lectures. I recommend him.
All I can say is be prepared to put all other courses to the side. This class is ridiculous on the amount testing and discussion you have to do. All practice exams count as a grade so if you do bad on them, there is no chance on regaining by taking regular exam. No teacher interaction at all. Pretty much on your own. :(
Greatest professor ever. Take him.
If you do the homework and go to labs, this class should be a breeze. Because of clicker attendance, going to class was semi-important, but you could still get an A pretty easily with good test scores. However, I taught myself most of the stuff and thought his lectures were boring and unhelpful. Even stopped taking notes. Overall, an average class.
Easiest class ever. Haven't been to class since February, and I have an A+. Go to the labs, though, as they are really useful and can help your grade a lot.
Interesting class, definitely makes you think a lot about economics in a lot of different ways. Not an easy grader when it comes to the essay tests, but still manageable.
He really likes to get into the minute details of the cases covered, but try to glean the economically relevant parts from the rest. Make sure you study the class notes and study guides.
HHHOOOORRRRIIIIBBBBLLLLLEEE!!! Took his Econ class online and it completely ruined my summer!!!! I regret taking it with him but I guess I'm glad I got it out of the way. If you can, take it in person and preferably with a different teacher
I took this class online and it was not as bad as everyone says it is. He uses an easy program for homework and it is usually only due once a month. To pass the tests you really need to understand the concepts, not just facts. The online book outlined the concepts very clearly so it was not hard to get an A.
Class isn't hard, but his lectures are all over the place. Uses website called Aplia for homework-- $99 gets you access to homework and online textbook. Not too hard as long as you do the homework and read the chapters online; he isn't much help in class.
I took it online... first thing im going to tell you is..RUNNNN!! RUN FAR AWAY FROM HIS ONLINE CLASS THE TEST ARE EXTREMELY HARD AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MATERIAL!! THE TEST COME FROM LIKE 5 DIFFERENT BOOKS AND NOTHING HE SAYS OR DOES IS ANY HELP! I HAVE A 3.4 GPA AND HAVE NEVER EVEN CAME CLOSE TO FAILING A CLASS AND IM GOING TO FAIL HIS.
lectures were pretty clear, but very boring. i struggled to stay awake every class. he does clicker questions which are bonus points i think. he also posts practice exams online that are very helpful but they're on a separate website so you have to pay attention when he tells you about it because most people missed that.
Do not buy the text book because the code comes with one online. He is super boring but not a bad teacher. there is HUGE opportunities for bonus so do hw and go to class. if you do pract. tests you're straight (plus they're bonus!) if I did my practice tests and didn't miss class I would've gotten an A..
Really hard class but he was not a bad teacher. I heard Zerlot was easier but Elder did bump me up at the end to help me pass the class.
Do NOT take the online class. Boring online lectures. Tests are very difficult and do not always correspond to notes, videos, book, etc. Not a horrible teacher, just ridiculous tests. Avoid if possible
Do not take! Exams are worded to be tricky, you will be expected to know obscure data about graphs in the book (What was the level of inflation in the US in 1982?) Instead of actually learning economics, you are forced to memorize facts and will forget it as soon as the test is over. Wouldn't bump a 69.45 up to pass.
His class is boring, no doubt, but if you pay attention, take notes, do the homework, and go to class, there is no reason you should not make an A in this class. I would take him again.
The practice before the exam was helpfulness.
If you can take this class with a different professor then do it. He is so confusing and really, really boring. I didn't get a horrible grade in the class but I probably would have done better with a different teacher.
After reading the reviews on here prior to taking his class, I was worried. Honestly, this class is not too bad. The practice exams are great for preparing you for the exams, and the homework was easy. Elder kept good contact with the online class. I can't stand economics, but this class wasn't too terrible. Take him.
Worst teacher I've had in college. DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS! Material is easy to understand, but he makes his test nearly impossible to do well on, and this is coming from an A student. Tests are designed to trick students instead of reward them for studying hard. Typos are frequent on tests, some questions don't make sense, and some are random
Please do not take his online class. It is not worth it. The practice exams and module exams are so hard. I wish I would have dropped this course. If you want to keep your GPA do not take this class online, find another professor.
Wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. The practice exams and test are designed to be confusing and tricky. Discussion post are a joke. I spent a lot of time on each post and never got full credit.
If you don't do well in his ec 110 course then good luck the rest of your college career. Attendance is not mandatory, instead it is bonus. He offers so much bonus and is very lenient. Received an A- with minimal effort and barely attending class.
Terrible class! Listen to the otters above! This professor is not responsive to online students, gives no feedback, and really has no involvement at all throughout the class. RUN! Go somewhere else for your credits on this class instead of ruining your semester and GPA.
Most of the bad ratings are probably from the 90% on the class who played games instead of taking notes. He is a great professor who gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit, like attending easy labs and doing bonus homework assignments. Tests have problems similar to those that we practice in lab. The final is easy if you review old exams.
While the class is fairly easy, Elder is extremely boring. In August, 180 people were answering clicker questions. By the end only 120 were present to answer the questions. He spent most of his time talking about examples and giving useless information that had nothing to do with econ. Easy class but you might want to think twice about taking Elder
Incredibly boring, but helpful. Attendance not mandatory, but he gives a lot of bonus and part of your grade is answering questions on clickers in class. Offered review sessions on finals week.
Do not take this class online!!! The homework is really easy but the tests are hard b/c the questions are mostly concepts and trickily worded. Kind of harsh grading on discussion posts as well. I had a C test average but the discussion posts and homework got me a B.
He isn't the most exciting teacher. He is nice and is approachable. If you attend the labs you can drop your lowest grade (including final.) He does offer bonus points. I got a 98 on the first test, never did the HW and failed the final and got a B. Do the HW though. It helps with points and test prep. Watch out for awkward due times though.
Learned everything from the lab which is not even part of the class. It is something he just sets up on the side. I would have failed if I didn't go to those. The class time itself was useless. Extremely useless.
I know everyone hates on Elder but here's the thing.. if you go to class and pay attention,as well as do the homework, you can't not get a good grade in his class. He's a total bore, but he's a nice guy and if you just put in some effort nobody should struggle with his class. he gives a ton of opportunities for bonus points, too
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. ONLINE. biggest mistake of my college career
Elder's class is not hard. At all. Read the material and do the mindtap assignments before you go to class and you will pass. I've never made below a 91 on a test and you can just sit in his class and work on other stuff. He gives tons of extra credit and is usually pretty funny.
he was absolutely horrible. he doesn't go into depth on the slides, yet his test are in depth.
I would NEVER recommend taking this as an online course. I spent countless hours on sections that I would often still make bad grades on. This course has most likely ruined my GPA all because I made the mistake of not reading the reviews ahead of time. The amount of time I have to spend to make a C in this class easily doubles all my other classes.
Mr. Elder is such a great econ teacher. Go to the labs they help a lot. He wants you to do good in the class. If you do all of the homework, go to labs, and study hard for test you should get a good grade in his class. He wants you to go well in his class. SUCH A GREAT TEACHER
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE COURSE!!!!!!! He is nice but online exam is really HARD!! Only 4 Xtra Credit. Exams on SUNDAY!
His lectures were boring, his puns aren't funny, and his tests are hard. The software we use for our homework rarely worked, and yet he still insisted on using it. You have to do 4 assignments every week, and if the software is acting up on you he won't extend any deadlines. The tests are tricky but he gives lots of extra credit.
After reading many reviews last spring, I was nervous taking Dr. Elder's class. He has made his class fair. He values homework (online) as 20% of your grade, 16% for practice(open book) tests, which are excellent prep for the real exams. Extra credit (enough to move your grade 2%) is available. Do your work, study and you will be fine.
Show up to his lectures, do the homework and attend the labs. If you attend 10 labs, he drops your lowest test score. The labs are never longer than 20 minutes, once a week. I did all the labs, showed up to every lecture, and I should've gotten a B-, yet I was awarded an A-. He wants you to succeed, so stick it out through his boring lectures.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. I took it online despite all of the warnings on this website. Got a B+, but worked my butt off for it. Studied for hours for each test reading the textbook and reviewing notes and still made B's and C's. I don't know how that happened but it seriously depressed me. Just don't do it.
Dr Elder is an extremely smart man and loves economics. However, his class is also very hard. He does have a lot of opportunities for you to succeed but the tests are bad news for your grade. There a chance for you to drop lowest test grade and replace one with an optional exam later in the semester. The class will take a lot of your time.
The lectures are boring and not helpful at all and he does clicker questions, but if you read the textbook and do the practice tests you can do very well. Everything he tests you on comes from right the textbook and practice test. Good amount of extra credit available. Be prepared to self teach, butt he material isn't too hard.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! The lectures are very long and boring. If you can listen to and comprehend someone who is monotone then by all means take this class. He is a nice person, but I would not recommend him at all.
Elder was a great teacher and a nice person. If you go to class, take notes, and do the homework you should be fine. Reading the book is also very helpful for his tests. He gives LOTS of extra credit. His lectures can be long and boring, but are very beneficial to go to. I would definitely take his class again.
If you like to teach yourself, take this class. Elder doesn't teach much during lecture. This class is paired with online assignments due twice a week and the tests are awful. 1010 would NOT recommend
HE WAS THE REASON I DIDNT SLEEP SECOND SEMESTER....
Lectures can be pretty confusing, and they are very hard to listen to because 1) he has a boring voice and 2) they're pretty long. Tests tend to be pretty difficult. The labs you have once a week will be your savior in this class.
Dr. Elder is a really great guy and a solid professor. His class is quite challenging, but nothing good students can't handle. Tests are long and only written answer, but he definitely prepares you well enough- if you go to class. He is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject and is a pretty funny guy. Would recommend and take again.
Dr. Elder had some reviews that stated he was a little dry before I took his class. This is true in his lecture at times. But he doesn't lecture the entire class all semester long. The most important thing to know about his class is that if you show up to class and do the work, you'll end up with a good grade. He is straight forward, clear cut.
This class was horrible! Taking online was a nightmare and there was so much material required for each module. You need to be STRONG in math to be successful with this online course. Lectures were long and dry, and the text didn't seem to match the notes. He is very strict and a little hard to communicate with.
Homework is all online so you can work ahead and finish it whenever you want. His lectures are long and boring and you dont need them to complete the homeworks, just use the text. He uses clickers to measure attendance, so if you really dont want to show up, give yours to a friend. The tests are based off of homeworks and clocker questions, easy A
Easy class if you understand basic math skills, all homework is online you can work ahead. i didnt pay attention at all in his lectures and still got an easy A. 3 tests and no quizzes, and I got over 100% on every test. Grades attendance with clicker questions, which are just like test questions.
The lectures and assignments are confusing. But if you can complete the module questions, participate in discussions, you should get an A. Exams are proctored but are very similar to Module quizzes.
Lectures go very fast and I gave up on taking notes. Tests didn't seem to match up with what was given in lectures. Basically you should teach yourself the class. Have to show up for clicker points. He drops the lowest test and four lowest module grades but if you forget to do modules (like I did) that won't help.
Class was not difficult but I took it in high school and really understand Econ. Lectures are pretty long and boring honestly. However, homework assignments are doable. Attend once a week night lab sessions and you can drop a test. Many bonus points available. If you work hard you can make an A easily.
The lectures are the most boring things in the world, so just do the online homework and you should be fine. The homework has a lot of bonus assignments so do those because the test can be kind of hard, more so because he talks about himself for more than half the lecture.
I took Elder's class because the time worked well with my schedule. Let's just say I regret it. His lectures continue for way too long and yet he says nothing relevant. I personally have a hard time paying attention. He doesn't explain things very well and the lectures are much more vague than his tests. Homework is extensive, but easy.
He could be more clear during his lectures, I have an extremely had time with this class.
very hard to pay attention to and some info on tests is out of nowhere.
Dr. Elder is a nice man, just not the most engaging lector. During his lectures, he spent the majority of the class telling stories and then spent the last fifteen minutes trying to teach an hour worth of material. The class was super easy though. I did the online homework all in class and if you do the practice exams it helps for tests.
I had no experience with Econ before taking microeconomics with Professor Elder. I didn't open my textbook once, but he taught us everything we needed to know in the lectures and through the online assignments. He gives clicker questions everyday, so attendance is a must, but it's an easy A if you attend the lectures and do all of the homework.
You have clicker questions every day, and he uses this for attendance. Lectures are extremely boring, but the homework is super helpful when it comes to learning the material so you have to do the homework.
Nice guy, decent teacher, bad time manager. Lectures went the full time every class because every day he wouldn't start teaching material until there was 15 minutes left in class. Luckily, you can ignore him entirely and just do the online Homework. I did better in class when I started ignoring him and spending more time on the homework.
Microeconomics in itself is demonic and very hard to understand. My advice is to take it in the summer! Elder is old, tells lame jokes, and rambles like a lot. While he's not all bad, he seems like an okay guy but The lectures are confusing. You must read the textbook, go to class for participation points, and do ALL homework.
I enjoyed EC 110 and EC 111 with Elder. He makes available all of the tools that you need to succeed in these classes. I got an A+ for both. It took a lot of hard work and long nights, but that is the key to success at most difficult things.
I think Dr. Elder is a thoughtful professor, but his online test are way to hard. Most of the information learned will not be on the test. The information presented during class and the information on the very long test is grossly misaligned.
His lectures are long and boring, everything went over my head. I missed a test to attend a funeral and made it up, but he put in a zero for my test anyway and when I contacted him about it (multiple times) I never received a reply. Asked for help multiple times and never received any. I don't recommend him as a professor.
Dr. Elder is a nice guy, but I would not recommend taking his class. He gives a ton of homework, and his tests are not easy. I studied very hard to receive the grades I did. He takes attendance every class by giving clicker questions that are for a grade. This class requires full participation. His TAs are available for help during office hours.
I had no previous Econ experience going into Professor Elder's class, but I learned a lot! I never used the textbook, but attended every lecture, completed all of the homework, and did the online practice tests he offered and I got an A+ in the class. He was always willing to help when and prepared us for every test. I would take him for Econ again
lectures are super boring, but the book is easy to understand and not that bad to read. As long as you do the homework, read, come for clicker questions, and take the practice tests (Extra cred) your grade should be an A. he drops your lowest test grade and puts bonus Q's on the tests. Just put in a little effort and this class is easy.
He is a great guy and is very nice but his teaching is a bit outdated and unclear. Over half of the class dropped on the cut off day. If you HAVE to take him, you'll have to study the book and teach yourself. But if there is an alternative, go for it.
There is weekly homework assignments which can be annoying but he gives plenty of extra credit opportunities and chances to drop test grades.
Lectures are really long and boring. Hard class because of the material and he misses some stuff during the lectures. I taught myself most of the information through the book. Going to class doesn't help much but he does clicker questions.
He is a very nice guy and often cracks jokes, but his teaching is very unclear and confusing. The aplia homework is difficult and takes a good bit of time. Tests are not like the powerpoint, just all around an awful class. Take zirlott or someone else. But if you like to teach yourself and study the book, go for it.
His tests are nearly impossible even when doing all of the homework, making quizlets, reading the textbook, and attending every class. Good luck.
The course work, lectures, mindtap, and discussions do nothing to prepare you for the tests and exams. The test are so hard it is nearly impossible just to pass. You can write and essay on the discusion questions and you will still receive an 18/20. Tests are very hard!!! Tests are VERY HARD!!!
I made A's on all of the mindtap assignments (including the homework), understood the material, memorized powerpoints, took notes on all the lectures and never made better than a C on the exams. I learned the material but these exams that don't resemble lectures, powerpoints, or mindtap are a ridiculous way to be tested.
Personally, i thought the class was very fair. He clearly outline what you need to be successful for the course. He gives lots of helpful homework through mind tap. The tests aren't too difficult, but i would try to find old tests from a friend just to have an idea of what they are like. His lectures tend to be boring.
I would take him again, Econ is hard regardless of professor so at least this guy gives extra credit. He is a sweet old man so its funny to listen to him teach. Study hard, but the tests are easier than the online homework. You will have to work for your grade. Good option if number one teacher is not available. Get your work done
Elder is the man. Gives a ton of extra credit opportunities that just involve showing up. do the homework and read the book and you will get an A. Really nice and approachable, and lectures are sometimes funny/interesting.
Great guy, his lectures will make you think and challenge yourself. One of the kindest professors I had, he is very understanding. Study for the tests and read all the cases and you will be fine.
This class is super easy. His lectures are very boring and not helpful at all but if you read the book and do the assigned homework, you should know all the material for the test. His tests aren't hard and very straightforward. He also gives practice exams for extra credit that also help.
Boring lecture. Show up to class for clicker questions because that's how he grades for attendance. Would not recommend
Dr. Elder's class is mostly a lecture, the homework is online and due weekly, and I would typically just do it during class. If you pay attention to the homework and actually try to understand the right answers you will understand why you're doing what you are. If you understand the homework, just take the practice test and tests will be easy
This class was very easy. He gave lots of extra credit opportunities, and the tests are easy also. He is very nice and always willing to help you if you put in the effort. I would 10/10 take him for this class.
Definitely the worst class I've ever taken, test questions are poorly worded.
He tends to go off on tangents during class and it is really hard to take notes. However, economics calls for a lot of examples so it is easy to get lost but if you can pay attention it can be pretty entertaining because of his dad jokes sprinkled in between.
He is heavy on lectures, but the lectures aren't very helpful. He tends to ramble, but the notes are online (I found them the day before the final). He offers extra credit, which is helpful. Go the TA for help-they usually explain it better than he can.
Dr. Elder is a very nice guy who genuinely cares about his students. He provides countless opportunities for extra credit and will drop a test grade if you attend labs. Homework is online and assigned weekly. Lectures can be a little long and dry. Exams are relatively straight forward if you do the homework and practice tests.
Dr. Elder focuses mainly on lectures and they are not very helpful and often dry. But he is very nice and explains how to do assignments and test in detail. He also offers a way to drop a lowest test grade and some extra credit.
The teacher was really nice and answered any questions I had. But the tests. Beware of the tests. Nothing matched up with the reading material and everything was objective. You really really really have to know the material or be pretty proficient in Economics. I had to take this again with another professor and did really well.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. Readings and lectures match up so you could pick just one. Homework is difficult, but I appreciated having a lot of assignments rather than just tests. Tests are SO hard. That being said, I made a B in the class and I have no idea how. I'm guessing he curved it because I should have made a D at best.
This was the first C I have ever made. Makes me sick. The exams are HARD! Made 100 on all the homework and studied and never made above 78 on an exam. Ridiculous to make a general social science class this difficult.
Dr. Elder was one of my favorite professors at UA. He is very sweet and definitely accessible outside of class. He provides a great incentive to go to optional weekly labs with the TA to drop a low test grade. Homework is not too bad, weekly assignments, you get 3 attempts per problem and he takes the highest grade. I would 100% take him again.
Professor Elder was an awesome professor. He really cares about his students and is sometimes pretty lenient given the circumstances. Homework was due every week, pretty easy. Do the homework and study lecture, you'll pass. Book is necessary though! The tests aren't too tough but they're not easy. Offers some extra credit
I have never made a B in my life, and I have a 93 in his class currently. This being said, I have studied my butt off, my hair is falling out because of this class, and I have never been more stressed. It is a good class if you care a lot about econ and truly want to learn because it requires you to know it inside and out. I dont though.... HARD.
This guy is really cool. I ended with a 89 in his class, and he gave me an A. I took the online class, and this class isn't hard if you just watch the lectures and do the homework/practice tests. He answers emails usually within a day, and his goal is for you to get the highest grade that you can possibly get. He offers a lot of extra credit.
The class was essentially self taught with very little guidance. The questions that came up on tests were not always on the subject you learned. The discussion posts are virtually impossible to get a 100% on.
Worst professor Ive ever had. On homework I make 100s. Practice tests I score high 80s but then the actual test will have nothing we've covered and the questions and graphs are tricky to read. I have not made about a 52 on his tests. you WILL NOT receive a 100 on a discussion. He will not give extra time even if a close relative dies. (Mine did)
Horrible teacher, took this professor online and he is TERRIBLE. The tests include random facts from out of nowhere that are not disclosed in the book. I would avoid this teacher if I were you. Macroeconomics should not be this hard.
Terrible professor. Made it very clear to students that he was not there to teach and said the course is set up for us to teach ourselves. Do not reach out for help from him because it will not do any good. My best advice is to create a class group me and help each other.
One of the hardest classes I've taken at UA since becoming a student. The professor does not care if you do well in class and he expects you to teach yourself. I definitely wouldn't recommend his class and would strongly encourage students to take a different professor but unfortunately he was the only one offered this summer.
I also took Dr. Elder this summer and the previous reviews about his online summer class are just ignorant. The course was set up much like other courses to be self guided- that is how it is formatted- I would not enjoy a zoom call with 350 other students. These people are just not competent its EC110 not that hard.
Maybe it's just me, but this class was one of the hardest I've ever taken. I did it through early college and regretted it. I struggled so much, even when asking for help. Discussion posts were fine, but the textbook material/Mindtap sucked. I felt like a lot of the work there and on tests was never really covered.
