Very upbeat and fun. Gives little quizzes every once and a while and stresses on argumentative writing. Only required book for the class was Farenheit 451. Easy read. :)
I love Mr. Hoffman. He is so random and cheery for an 8am class :)
Easily connects with his students and makes learning boring subjects fun with his added humor. English is not my strong point, nor do I think it's very fun, but I actually look forward to attending Hoffman's classes.
I love this class...the teacher is great, connects well with the kids....starts each class just talking to everyone. I loved the essay topics we got, you write alot and not often but once in a while he'll decide to drop a simple quiz....usually when no one goes to class. awesome teacher, would definetly take a class with him again
Professor Hoffman really cares about his students. He grades fairly and is easy on in class essays. If the class is having trouble on a certain thing he will go over it in class. There's 4 essays and 2 in class plus a few grade booster assignments.. He is also pretty funny.. I recommend him!
does an efficient job of explaining things, and you only read two books.
he is pretty cool and funny usually, but he's kind of a pompous **** most of the time. it's a pretty good class.
hes kind of a jerk, but he is really funny. if youre good at writing, you'll do really well in this class. if youre bad at writing, hoffman wont teach you how to be better.
so he can be a bit of an ****, but hes definetly funny for 8am class!...just make sure you actually read the books, and if you help him out in discussions he'll love you...also make sure you know MLA format for essays! that freakin killed me...
You must attend every single class. He doesn't really care if you do or not, but if you miss a day you will usually miss a lot! He's a really interesting guy and has so much to teach. He takes English to another level and he makes it so interesting. We have a lot of discussions, which I learned a lot from. And he allowed me to expand my writings sk
He may come off as a "jerk" at first, but he's actually pretty cool and down-to-earth. Read the novels and you shouldn't have a problem :-)
veryy good teacher. just read two books.
Really funny, refreshing guy. Just wants to make good writers out of his students. Fun essay topics, very broad. Would definitely recommend. Awesome! Take his class!! also, he is very attractive ladies.. but he knows it!
an awsome eng 100 teacher! he can be a jerk, but he's funny, esp for 8am. he's also young and an alum, which is preety chill! he really tries to help with our essays; grades fairly as long as you can write well. He loves discussions and counterpoints so don't be afraid to share your opinion. Go to class, read the 2 books, and have some opinion
Hoffman sucks. He's boring and it is VERY annoying how he tries to be funny by talking in high pitched voices. His jokes are lame, and he is so NOT hot but that's beyond the point here. The point is, he doesn't really teach. His lectures are pretty much read off of the overhead and he doesn't really help with your essays. Don't take him!!
Sometimes confusing lectures and assignments. Very much a "smart ass." Curses fairly constantly. Two easy books. Grades okay, has "Favorites." Easy going, but you MUST do the work Right.
I am conservative, he was a liberal so we didnt get along at time. Wants students to participate gets mad if you dont. Made us read Animal Farm and Breakfast of Champions(book was obscene). Some lectures are a waste. 4 out of class essays 2 in class grades fair. Gives random but easy quizzes. Funny for 8:00 am. More good than bad about Hoffman.
He jokes around and curses but it adds and interesting factor to him. The books you will read are boring and he even says they are 'dense'. Overall hes a decent professor. Hes not an easy grader but he curves the classes overall grade and essay grades.
Hmm. I enjoyed him in the classroom, you have to participate. Read the books he assigns no matter how horrible they may be. You can't slack on the essays, otherwise you won't get very good grades. He does recognize improvement and grades accordingly. I wouldn't take it if you don't like writing essays. You'll have one or two plus reading a week
He is definitely not a morning person. has a starbucks or rockstar every lecture. The lectures are not needed to attend every one but the class is so small he will know when you arent there. mostly essats. grades fair, but he is very sarcastic, interesting to take at 9am..lol
Prof. Hoffman is totally predictable.. He walks into class and we'll be like he's gonna drink his coffee, curse about something and ask us about the book that noone has read. His grading is mysterious... we can't figure out our own grade without asking him. He's interesting at time and boring most of the other time...
The guy is very cynical. I found him to be hilarious when he would go on rants about random things that bothered him. Cusses a lot. Hard grader on papers. He loves to set up people to give a wrong answer so he can prove them wrong.
This guy is hilarious...love his rants on oprah and tyra...do your work, and sit back. You'll be entertained by this dude
If you're good at writing, this teacher will indirectly help you improve because he will expose you to new ideas. If not, maybe not the best class for you. He doesn't really "teach" very much, but overall I really enjoyed his class. This guy is freaking hilarious.
I really enjoyed his class. He is really funny and very sarcastic. He has a completely different teaching style than any teacher i've ever had. His grading isn't too difficult and attendance isn't taken. Do the assignments and participate and you will do fine.
Class is easy if you put the time and effort into it. He teaches you how to write and grades fairly. A few out of class assignments and a midterm and final. All of which are very easy. Also, unlike other prof. he only makes you write a max of 500-700 words for each essay! He even curves the class. Overall, an easy easy A!
Mr. Hoffman is a funny man. Very interesting to take in the morning. I still can't decide if i love him or hate him. He really loves to embarrass you, so i've learned to keep my mouth shut. But he will make you think about things more deeply.
Great professor. Before i took this class, i hated essays and the english subject in general. After taking his class, i found writing to be much easier. Everything he teaches is useful in daily life. He is a funny dude too. I would recommend him to anyone.
I hated English and essays so much before this class. I still dont like English, but essays seem so much easier to write. I owe it all to prof Hoffman. Also, he's a funny dude and rambles about random stuff sometimes which was pretty cool.
I learned a lot about life from his rants. His Eng 100 Comp class definitely helped me with my writing. All you do is read and write essays, but he makes it really interesting. He's cool to talk to about your essay after it's been graded. He won't bs you. Very intelligent, but jaded guy. Great class all around.
Fantastic Professor! Makes you appreciate the world of writing as well reading...
he can be interesting but he has favorites. when you argue back, he argues back like a kid who has to be right even if it means the end of the world. And if he has no answer back, he will dislike you for a while. I used to love english until i got my first B on an essay and a C too cuz he grades hard. Midterm is graded by someone else so i got an A
Strict teacher, strict grader. But anything he talks about unrelative to the class is extremely important. He says some serious stuff about life and our futures that make him all the more better a teacher.
Makes class interesting :) recommend taking him no class fridays even though its in your schedule you just take a little quiz/hw online. Awesome professor
This man will argue with you to the point of Ad Nauseum.
Professor Hoffman is somewhat cynical, but at the same time he can be hilarious and down to earth. Grades hard on the essays, and refrain from using your phone in class, he will go nuts.
Cynical, but funny guy. Keeps class interesting with his random tangents. Lectures are off Purdue OWL. Attend all classes; there are random grammar quizzes given out. About 5 essays throughout the semester, all decently graded. Cell phone use = 2000 word essay about the most random subjects. Maintain an A in class and you won't take the final. Easy
makes you feel stupid but knows what hes talking about Im in love with him
Amazing professor! He's hilarious and all around an awesome guy. Take him!
He's a really good professor that helps you whenever you ask. He likes to crack jokes here and there. He doesn't grade that hard on essays as long as you thuroughly answer the prompt. There are 5 essays, 2 grammar exams, 1 midterm, and 1 final. Attendance isn't necessary, but beware of the random quizzes given out. Overall, you should take him!
He doesn't take attendance but he gives out pop grammar quizzes and the lectures help so you should go. You'll prob hate him in the beginning because the workload is a lot but you really do learn from his class and you won't regret at the end. You don't have to take the final if you have an A in the class. Take him!!!!
Great teacher. Really knows what he's talking about, inside and outside of the classroom. Absolutely hilarious, sometimes crude but definitely treats you as an adult. Essays are very frequent, about 5 or 6. 1 midterm and 1 final and 2 lecturereading exams. Midterm and final are in class writing and easily graded. Would definitely take him again.
He's a fair grader and actually reads your work without any personal bias. He really helps you out if you actually talk to him after class which I recommend. He has a very funny dry humor which comes off as crude but for real get over it, you're in college. Get to know him outside of class, he's a great man.
Hoffman was a funny guy, his essays on the other hand were not. I didn't really know what I was doing wrong in my essays because it was critical thinking class but in the end I got a solid B in the class. I recommend going to class and staying on his good side by not talking back to him.
Professor Hoffman is extremely cynical and disrespectful. His lectures are pointless, merely teaches grammatical rules which you learned in the 5th grade. He grades out of class essays extremely hard and makes you feel stupid about your writing. I do not recommend taking his class.
My favorite professor of the semester! All the lectures are relevant to the essays you write and he his clear about what he wants in essays. He is very funny and I loved going to class! 100% recommend, he's super cool. :)
This guy was awesome. Super funny. If you have an A you don't have to take the exam
Amazing professor! This class was super easy. 4 essays total, 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 grammar exams, and about 10 random grammar quizzes. Attendance is not mandatory, but I would recommend going to class because he tells you EXACTLY what he wants on the essays. He's very funny so time goes by fast!
His lectures are boring and dry. He also has a dark sense of humor... He grades pretty hard on his OOC essays, but if you answer EVERY PART of the prompt thoroughly, you should be fine. He grades his in class essays really easily. His exams are verbatim from his lectures, so make sure you know them as some are fill in the blank.
Mr. Hoffman is an astoundingly educated teacher! He may come off as rough around the edges, but he will, without a doubt, challenge you to broaden your perspectives! He is not an easy A, but do the work and you will come out victorious!!!
This class was one of my favorite classes. His lectures taught us about real life. He was really clear of what he expected to see in all his assignments: 4 out of class essays (grades pretty tough), 2 grammar exams (easy), 2 in class essays (easy), in class credit/no credit quizzes, some homework from Rules for Writers (easy)
Hoffman is a great teacher! You'll learn a lot about writing a good paper. He's a tough but fair grader. He has a very sarcastic dry humor which I found amusing. Also, he comes off intimidating but just talk to him if you need help!
At first I thought he was mean but he really isn't. If you go to class on time and do all the homework you should be good. He wants what is best for his students. He is really funny and honest. I would take another class with him.
He is very informative. You will get a lot out of this class, but he is a tough grader on essays. I got my first D on one. Follow the prompts carefully.
There's a grammar quiz almost everyday of class. He's a tough grader on the out-of-class essays. DO NOT TAKE
He is good teacher and he seems to know what he is teaching about. He says attendance is not mandatory, but he does tend to give pop/grammar quizzes every class. He grades harder on the out of class essays(4) then in class essays(2). His lectures are extremely boring because it's stuff you learned about already he zones out all the time.
Do not take. Literally the worst. Very condescending to students when asking questions. Try to switch out of class if you get him!
Pop quizzes, 4 papers, 2 grammar exams, 1 midterm, and 1 final. Grammar exameasy, no studying. Midterm/finalinclass written essay, he gives reading material ahead, & he grades easy. 4 papers are easy if you know basic grammar. He gives good feedback for improvement. Don't have to take final if you have an A.
He gives the most boring lectures EVER. he doesn't have any passion for what he does and he grades extremely hard on the 4 out of class essays. he says he doesn't take attendance but he actually does cause he gives out "pop" quizzes every class meeting. the class is out of 100 points so you can ONLY miss 10 points. YIKES dont take switch if you can
Professor Hoffman was the best ENG 180 professor! There are out of class essays which are EASY. As long as you follow the prompt, sound coherent, and have little spelling/grammar mistakes, you'll get an A. I was able to get 100% on all of my essays. Show up to class for those pop quizzes. You get full credit just for doing them! Easy A for sure!
There is not a time in this class in which you are not writing an out-of-class essay. His lectures are genuinely informative and useful. The man can go on very random tangents for ages.
Professor Hoffman was great! Comes off condescending at first but in reality, he is extremely cool. You are always writing a paper in this class. Grammar exams were easy. Never got anything lower than a B. Lectures can be boring but are informational to the essays and exams. Pop quizzes based on the homework. Do the work and you will pass
4 out of class essays, 2 grammar exams, and 1 in-class essay. The out of class essays are generally easy, just make sure to read the prompt carefully! He gives out grammar quizzes which are basically like your attendance so make sure to go to class! Also, for his class, if you get an A you don't have to take the final.
Good professor, detailed PowerPoints, good class discussions.
Professor Hoffman can come off as condescending, but I believe it's just his sense of humor. He really wants to help you, so if you take the time to ask questions, go to office hours, and put effort into your work, you're good to go. He's a tough grader, but if you're looking to improve your writing, you should take him!
No phones in class. Only used our textbook for a few random chapters. He goes off on some tangents like other professors. Lectures may be boring but he makes up for it in discussions by playing devil's advocate. The essays are doable. He doesn't take attendance but you should go so you don't miss the information. The class is not hard.
6 Papers (60%); Exams (30%); Informal Assignments and Activities (10%). PROS: Reasonable grading criteria. Effective lectures. Gives great feedback on rough drafts. Accessible outside class. CONS: Email replies usually around midnight (not a problem for me but maybe for others). Assignments are dependent on each other, so it's easy to fall behind.
The class was okay. Classes were just filled with lecture and I found to be very boring. Instruction was unclear at times and for some of the assignments, we had to guess what he wanted it to look like. Zoom sessions were posted on Beachboard so attendance was not mandatory if you don't feel like it.
(COIVID-19 era) Hoffman is a great and genuinely smart guy. His lectures are laid-back and he always tells you exactly what he wants on the assignments. Quizzes are nice if you do the readings, which are very light. Overall, he's a very nice and interesting fellow. Take him if you can.
Pretty easy grader, as long as you do the work you will be fine. 4 papers (prompts are not too difficult), 10 easy grammar quizzes, weekly assignments (would take me maybe 15 minutes to complete). His lectures can be boring, but I found the information to be quite useful. Overall, he's a nice guy and is helpful to his students.
This was an online class. The lectures were short and sweet. Tests are pretty easy but the wording can be confusing sometimes. I would recommend getting the book to help. I also thought the criteria for papers was clear.
Professor is a nice guy, though his attitude is kind of depressing at times. When he switched up the short stories outside of the usual suspects (Hemingway, Carver, Woolf- bleh), they became more interesting. One complaint is that his paper prompts were consistently annoying. Sometimes a work does not always need to be negatively critiqued, Prof.
Lectures were made up of ranting and off topic anecdotes, grade was made up of homework, 4 essays, and 2 in class essays. Responds quickly to emails.
Pretty laid back, his powerpoints are easy to understand (take pics if you can). He condenses the material well, and his assignments are easy to understand. Tests are easy and ripped from lectures. Solid teacher, you'll like him
I enjoyed this writing class more than I thought. The papers you write are very useful and are good skills to know. He made the class fun by having interesting topics to write about. Exams are extremely easy, with a couple questions that have tricky wording, but papers can be tough, and aren't graded too easily so proofread them. Nice guy!
Don't be absent because he couldn't care less while missing the first week of school himself for my semester. Pretty chill, has his good moments and some boring moments. Lots of writing, lots of showing peers your work (I don't really like that). You can't be prepared for a class because you don't know what you will do, but he's chill.
Class isn't too bad as long as you show up and do your work. Most of the letter is just taking notes and him talking. He likes to tell jokes and no one laughs at them so that's awkward but overall its an alright class.
He is a somewhat slow talker and often tries to crack jokes but it will get awkward because nobody laughs. Does not like phones out during class. Doesn't believe in second chances and makes that clear on the first day of class. Every class is just note taking which can be boring at times and homework is in the textbook or essays.
I would often wear no seatbelt and speed on the highway on the way to class because I wanted to die before I got there. This class is the only class I was doing poor in because of his very very VERY STRICT lengthy essay requirements that he never gives good scores on. Rude professor too and very tough grader. Get ready to work.
Best English professor I've ever had. Grading was clear. Attend class in order to know what work needs to be done. All quizzes and other work are full points as long as you follow directions, regardless if you made mistakes. Only things that really affect your grade are 2 easy grammar exams and essays.
Talks a lot about nothing and tries to make jokes that just don't land… also very heavy eye contact? But work is manageable and easy, a lot of essays but they're useful. Grade only really depends on Grammar exams which are a bit tough - also doesn't post notes on Canvas so although attendence isnt mandatory you still should go
He's chill asfffff but lowkey you need to go to class, and he can be a butt about a lot of things. He also doesn't answer emails and grades harshly. If you're locked in with school, you'll do good. But......NGL that party life finna go bye bye if you finna take this class.
Overall, there were 4 essays, pop quizzes, 2 grammar exams and midterm/final. He was a tough grader when it came to the essays than the midterm/final. He was an okay professor, but his lectures were so boring, and he tries to be funny when he isn't. It was almost impossible to get an A if you scored low on some of the essays. Do not procrastinate!!
His lectures were clear and often ended early. Attendance isn't required, but he doesn't post lectures, so skipping means missing info. Not the most exciting, but he's chill and the content is useful. Expect a lot of writing, but it's manageable.
VERY HEAVY ON EYE CONTACT. Geez, he is like staring at you while he's lecturing, which makes me feel sooo uncomfortable. Make jokes that are not funny. Other than that, his assignments were pretty straightforward. The amount of work is doable, not a lot. Give you full credit on the grammar quiz and homework.
I feel like the low ratings come from people who don't show up to class, as attendance isn't mandatory. Try not to miss class though, because a lot of in class assignments you can't really make up. Overall easy class. Hoffman is a honestly a chill professor
Easiest class ever. Felt like middle school grammar. Literally didn't show up to class for a month and still got a B. He's really funny and chill. 1-2 he's per week that usually take no more than 15 mins (unless it was essay drafts those maybe 30). Def had multiple in class assignments that you could not make up so show up (but attendance not mand)
1 midterm (graded very lightly), 2 exams which are pretty easy (I didn't study for either and got A's), a few quizzes but you don't get graded on those. The assignments outside of class are easy and generally don't take a lot of time. Grading criteria and content on the class is very clear, he also gives life advice along the way which was nice.
Just show up to the lectures as you won't know how to do an assignment if you don't get the notes. I think we wrote like 4 essays the whole semester. First time I got an A in English.
He was a hard professor because I could not stay engaged with his lecture, though that could be my fault. I expected this to be a fun class, but it was mostly writing essays. He also takes forever to respond to emails.
hes a good english teacher. lectures are super boring but i did learn a lot. 4 essays, a couple hw assignments (super easy), 2 grammar exams (also super easy), in classes quizzes (gives you full credit for doing them), 2 timed in class essays (midterm and final) worth barely any of your grade.
