This prof. has a Ph.D. but he teaches CS3 like he is a used car salesman. I do not know how he is with more advanced courses. Barely used the $96 in textbooks. He is easily distracted, unorganized and will bore you to tears. Hard to learn from.
Dry lectures, but very organized and explains very well.
Very knowledgeable. You'll get more from the class the more you pay attention. NOT easy to skate through.

His lectures are really informative and easy to get. His tests are hard but if you study his notes and attentive in class than "A" is not far. A lot of extra credit oppprtunities. He is always ready to help. I want to take his class again.
He's a good guy.he really tries to help you if you talk to him during his Office Hours.but his tests are hard n his lectures are realllyyy BORINGGGG. I'm saying his tests are hard for me, and I'm getting an EZ A in chem 11 and calc 2... The projects are really easy..and there is lots of extra credit
very good teacher all u need to do is pay attention in class (gets boring sometimes) but still very easy.. DO NOT BUY TEXT BOOK!!! overall good class just do good on test and projects.. u will do well esp. if u like computers
he is good teacher i had i got an easy A
He is a great instructor, knows databases programming very well, is extremely helpful; for his CS61 & CS65 classes you do not need to buy books: all the lectures could be copied to a floppy or ZIP and printed out. I highly recommend him, and plan to enroll in his Robotics class.
well he is not a good teacher. I took his course and i just waste it my time. he not good lecture do not take his course. Take David Morgan he is excellent
explains computer tech. very well, and very professionally. not a little kid kind of class like in high school where it was more for fun rather than educational. his class is very well constructed. his use of the projector is awsome.
All I have to say is Rogler has alot to learn in computers. I took his course last Fall 2004 and he didnt manage his time by explaining to all students the basic of the class. I recommend you to take David Morgan he is a good instructor and respectful he lets you make up late work and it wont affect your grade. TRUST ME and TRUST HIM
Good Instructor, really knows databases...
Great professor/Great class! The guy spends 24/7 to help students, and to research new areas in the field. He does his best to bring the best out of students. His exlanations are very clear; although, a little bit nagging. Great free handouts!
easy to do well if you study his lecture notes, class is boring though
Very nice and and dedicated teacher, although his lectures are a little bit boring. He's kind of a guy who wants to do everything perfect, and before he says a word he thinks 10 times :) He doesn't use book (we used it only once for one hw) everything you need to learn was in his word doc files, which you can download.
Rogler is an AMAZING professor. Truly enjoyed taking his SQL class. Could be a little boring at times, but overall he is very interesting. A lot of practical work. All you really need is to take a good 30 minutes/ week to read his book, and maybe study an hour before the test. Take this class if you really want to learn SQL.
HE IS A VERY GOOD PERSON..YOU CAN PASS AND LEARN CS3 WITH HIM VERY EASY
Prof. Rogler is a nice man, and fairly knowledgeable about computer science. However, he is the most boring professor I have ever had. His lectures are torture. He pauses a lot while speaking, and he goes over easy topics again and again and again. Each of his 3 hour lectures could easily be reduced to about 45 minutes or one hour.
Excellent professor. Had to take SQL class for work requirements, ended up liking it so much, I want to specialize in it now.
Dr Rogler is one of the best instructors I had in SMC. There is no need to purchase a textbook for his courses. He provides the students with his unpublished book. Do yourself a favor and print it out. It's a lot easier to take his open book/notes exams with a hard copy in front of you. His book/notes are very clear with lots of examples.
He is a nice guy buy his lectures are sooo boooring that is hard not to fall asleep!! i fell asleep in quite a few of his lectures. Pauses a lot when talking. His tests are multiple choice and not very hard. He will usually give extra credit in tests and assigments. Easy B, but not hard to get an A.
He is the most valuable proffessor at SMC. He usually explains slowly but he wants you to learn completely; he helps you outside the class. Do all the assigned homework on time. You will get an A easily. Take his classes.
He's boring as heck, but really informative. Rogler really knows his database stuff, and the knowledge I gained in his DB courses was key to the job I have today. Totally worth it -- if you can stay awake!
He is so helpful! He gives tons of extra credit! He helps you in the computer lab until you understand every little thing! Homeworks are easy. Every lecture is uploaded to the smc database, so you can print and study. Exams are detailed, but not impossible. The exam about Alice is kind of hard though. Be careful! A must take!
Dr. Rogler has a very distinct character of a "crazy scientist". Obsessed with robotics, lives in his world. He delivers enough academic material in CS60, but it is very boring for both beginners and advanced students. So just get some patience, and get a nearly easy A. Prior knowledge of databases will help a lot. Read some Oracle DB docs...
At first I was very bored with the class, I had no interest in databases at all, but then we got to the programming aspect of it using SQL, which I found to be very interesting. Dr. Rogler is very helpful and knowledgable in the field!
Very methodical and precise professor. Patiently explains every detail of every topic in class. Uses the projector extensively to work through all examples during lectures. All lecture notes are complete and available to download (might not need the text). Assignments are reasonably easy. Tests are all multiple choice (scantron), easy if you read.
Very helpful to anyone and very explanatory. i never bought a book because he provides you with it all and received an A, but i knew everything before i went into that class. Tests are a little difficult but not too hard. He is a great character, reminds me of Michael Scott from the office.
Fun, interesting course: if you like database programming. You do actually come out of the class with a profound understanding of Oracle... If you do your work, tests are open computer, but I still found them very difficult!
If you are into computers he's the teacher to take. However, I have no interest in computer, but have to take a couple of courses and found his class to be painfully boring. Its also impossible to take notes on his lecture.
Boring if you have no interest in computer science, might want to bring a book in that case. But if your interested in the fact that technology is developing so rapidly Rogler makes it semi-interesting.
Classes are so boring, he makes it so hard I guess either he had a flower shop or either he used to work at a computer company but he's not good at all. I hated that class i tried really hard and i got a B which ruined in my GPA.Anyway dont take his class. If you have to take him remember you wont have enough time for your other classes
Good person, good teacher. He tries to engage class in discussions and active learning, it's not that he makes it boring for some, it's just that majority of his students are noobies and lack motivation. He really cares that you get a good grade and offers PLENTY of extra credits other instructors don't. A rating for this guy
Great professor. Really into his subject.
The best! I'm taking every class he teaches! Well-organized, thorough lecture notes, tests on exactly what he taught you. Teaches thoroughly on the chosen subject matter so you really learn in his class. Engaging, intelligent and an overall great teacher.
His class is VERY boring, but he's a good teacher(if you're good at note-taking on boring lectures). I got a B in his class without studying, but i DID have a LITTLE prior knowledge on CS before, so don't let that fool you. So:boring, but pretty easy.
EASY class, don't miss it b/c extra credit for 100% attendance. tests can be tricky, but there is EC on projects to make up for that. be thankful there's a comp. in front of you, it's a boring class...got an A
VERY friendly and helpful. He knows his stuff. Yes, the class can be a bit boring, but not because of him. I didn't read any of the textbook and got an A. The tests are sometimes a bit confusing (they're written like software sometimes), but if you show up, and just ask if you need help, you will do fine.
nice guy, knowledgeable about his subject area, I'm assuming databases and robots are his specialties, lots of real world experience in computer systems and programming, writes his own textbooks that are really rich in info, the class is chill and slow, overall though Rogler a solid professor, always willing to help out
Wonderful teacher. Knowledgeable, patient, clear. If you don't get it, he will explain more. Wrote his own textbooks and electronic copies are free to his students. Appropriately challenging but if you attend class and study the lecture notes you can get an A. He even offers extra credit. I want to take every class he teaches.
His teaching is very effective and with humour.
This teacher is horrible. He may be easy but he is boring. Man I took coffee before going to his class and he still managed to make me go to sleep. He is the only teacher that teaches CS60 so people have to suffer with him. He is a bad grader who deducts points for any little error.
He is a kind man and he knows what he is talking about the only thing is that class is very boring..but his class is very easy, i got a b+ without ever studding at all.
Great teacher. Sometimes classes were boring, but i love computers/programming so was still interesting. Grades based on projects/exams. Projects are straight forward, they just require a couple hours of effort. Do the extra credit, helps grade a LOT. Only people who didn't do well just didn't start early enough on the projects or didnt study.
He was a great professor sometimes he was a little boring but hes understanding. His projects are easy to do as long as you pay attention in class and follow wath the paper says. And if you have questions after class he's there to help you. He's a very cheerful person.
Adorable. He is so interested in technology that he made the A.I. part of my philo 1 class really interesting by bringing in real robots! Really fun.
The class is somewhat challenging to pass and very tough to get A on, unless you're by someone smart. This old guy is very easy to fool but class is tough. HW is not hard to get good grade on since you have various sources for help but final is extremely hard. He give you only the same amount of time for first test to do double the questions!
If you don't take this class with Rogler, you are going to be sorry. This is not an easy class, but when I got into programming, I knew what I was doing and other students who did not have Rogler were lost. I changed my major to CS after his class.
There are 6-8 projects most with extra credit making 32% of your grade, 40% exams, 3% attendance (plus an extra 3% for perfect attend), & 25% final. The class is extremely boring. No one pays any attention to him speak. I spent class watching youtube & got an A. Do the extra credit for every project and look over the text before an exam. Easy A!!!
Great professor, I would recommend him to anyone looking to start computer science at SMC. He makes you feel welcome and will lend a helping hand whenever needed. You will pass this class easily as long as you do the required work. He cares about the material which can be seen when he is teaching.
(All u need to know)I was nervous coming from high school and was expecting lots of pressure, but the class proved to be otherwise. Although he may seem unapproachable at first, after a while you can see Rogler is a pretty cool and knowledgeable guy. No money to spend on txtbks :). Class can get boring at times...
(continued from below) So yeah, do all required work and you will do JUST FINE. If u will be taking future programming classes, Rogler prepares very well! the date says 12/1/11, but i'm enrolling for future semesters and remembered that i had him, so i took the class over the summer ,sorry about that!!
Professor Rogler gets very into the field of computer science. I didn't know that much about CS but after taking his class, I learned a lot. Do and actually try on his projects as well as the extra credit. IT HELPS!! Also more extra credit for perfect attendance
Mr. Rogler is knowledgeable, patient, and kind. The textbook is his own, and is well written. We don't have to pay for it! Although the subject matter is dry, he does his best to give an interesting and thought-provoking presentation. If you put in some study and ask questions, you will do well and learn a lot.
Professor Rogler is very kind, genuinely interested in helping his students, and you can tell he really loves his field. Definitely recommend :)
Best professor for CS3, explains the class very confusing. 8 projects, 5 test, 1 final. most projects have bunch of extra credit about 70 pts. Exams and finals are 50 multiple choice. Class can get boring. but as long as you do EC you will do fine. Got an A. Attendance is mandatory if you want to get 3% extra.Recommended.
His textbook is useless since he gives you exams on issues not covered. Also, some of the codes don't work at all, and some images are not consistent with SQL 2008. Try to study from other books that are hopefully clearer and more up to date. His grading is confusing and inconsistent, which can work for or against you.
Excellent professor. Highly recommended for CS3. He's a very knowledgeable professor. If you're interested in computer science or want to learn a few things about computers, then Prof. Rogler is your guy! I cannot thank him enough for all the knowledge he shared with me. PS: He makes epic sound effect.
He ok, sometimes the class could be soooo boring but its not bad overal. Tests can be tricky.
Great professor for numerous subjects. He writes all his own textbooks and provides them to the entire school for free. If you want someone who knows hoe to command a database, hes your guy.
For his CS 65 oracle class, only 9 students left until final and more than 50% are drop. There are 6 projects in class, only final project I get 93,others 5, I got either 100 or above, however,I still get C for this class. If you are NOT native English speaker as well as, very strong programming background, I strong not recommend you take his class.
Rogler's a great guy. Took him for CS3 and he definitely knew his stuff. Talks a lot though, easier to just study his texts. His tests are a bit difficult, but if you study well you'll get an A
Dr. Rogler's textbook is free ,but useless and does not cover exams. So, even you study hard, you won't be able to get good grade. One excellent student complained the exams should be programming, not English reading test, also another student complained you just want to dump our grade, but he didn’t care about students complains and feeling.
Dr. Rogler's CS 3 & 60 are easy, because that is trap want you take his advance class. On his CS65 Oracle are totally different , as well as, not patient same as before. His oracle knowledge is limit and he didn’t have much real world oracle working experience, therefore, I asked him many oracle problems that he didn’t know the answer.
This is supposed to be Intro to Computer Science specifically programming. However, the class was geared more towards computer engineering. Big difference. Alice isn't going to get me a job coding. His style of teaching matches the lack of cohesion his book has. The tests are multiple guess.
He is the nicest guy you will ever meet.. i dont know if its just me but he makes things very complicated and confusing.
Textbook has Projects due for class, but book is not needed if you get the rubric from someone else. Tends to drone, but he is very clear about the concepts he is teaching. Lots of memorization needed, having prior knowledge about computers makes the class easier.
Dr. Rogler provides lots of opportunities for extra credit but his class is a bit on the boring side. Bringing flash drives packed with retro games is HIGHLY recommended! If you do the projects and extra credit the tests really aren't a problem. Also gives up to 3% for daily attendance, which is a huge bump even if it doesn't seem like it.
Dr. Rogler seems like a nice guy, but his class is SOOO boring. It's not that the subject matter is boring, but he really doesn't get the students interested in the material. Also, his tests have questions that are not covered in class or in the text, which diminishes my motivation to study. He's clearly a computer genius, just not a good teacher.
Dr. Rogler is a humble genius. I recommend you read before lectures. The class itself is a bit dry, but the projects can be somewhat entertaining. Oh, and some of the test questions are not covered in class, so make sure to read the textbook!
Smart/nice guy, terrible teacher. His class CS3 class is pretty much just reading his book and memorizing certain aspects of computer science he picks and chooses that have no real application in the real world. The class was a complete waste of time, nothing of value gained. Would highly suggest taking another teacher for CS3 if possible.
Very nice/smart guy but extremely boring class! Takes forever to explain something really simple. Tests are really confusing even though their all straight from the book and he lets you write a page of notes. (Trust me its still confusing) Good thing he gives a lot of extra credit points on his projects. Got 110% projects and F-D on tests and got C
Nice Guy, with deep AI background knowledge. But lacks oral skills to explain material. Oracle Database was not his background at all, I was able to verify quite a few mistake when he's answering Oracle Q/As
Pretty nice guy and has a good general knowledge of what computer science is. He may be a little outdated when I compare him to my current university professors. He is very slow in explaining and helping you. His projects are somewhat detail oriented but you have time to get them just right and gives extra credit. His tests are very hard. Good luck
Nice professor and pretty easy class. As long as you come to class, pay attention, and do all assignments, you will get an A.
Dr. Rogler is an alright professor. He definitely knows his stuff but explaining and lecturing aren't his strongest suits. Exams and projects are taken straight out of the textbook(s)-which he wrote by the way- and attendance is mandatory. He gives 3% E.C. for perfect attendance which is definitely helpful believe it or not.
He is very helpful and respectful. Exams are not easy, however, do what you have to do, then you'll get a good grade. Recommend for students who really want to learn.
SQL class had lots of coding, the exams were too long but he did give room for incomplete questions. Suggest to anyone that they take CS60 prior to taking CS61 or CS65. Nice that he supplies the textbook from a network share for free. Patient with assignments, will help if asked. Responsive to emails.
Professor Rogler is a very nice guy. He teaches 100% out of the texts (which he wrote), but sometimes adds on too much clutter into his lecture which makes it very boring sometimes. Read the text thoroughly before exams, do extra credit, show up for every class (he gives extra credit for perfect attendance) and you'll be fine.
His class is a easy A only if you do the homework, he let you use notes for the tests. The only thing is that he tells to much derails while he is lecturing.
Pretty great class honestly, if you're self sufficient. Not to say the Prof. is totally useless, but clearly his age is upon him. His lectures often lead off topic, and he's pretty hard to listen to. He is very capable of helping out students who need help, and when he's on topic with lectures, they are extremely helpful.
Clarity is lacking in this class.
He had a lot of extra credit on the assignments we did. It helped balance out a few questions I would miss on his multiple choice tests. In fact, I got 100 % in his class because of his grading system. Overall, I enjoyed his class, although it did seem a bit easy.
He is nice and helpful, but his lectures are extremely boring! This class was more about how computers work and what certain functions do in different programs - NOT PROGRAMMING! His projects are really easy and very clear on what he wants included. His tests are relatively easy, without studying it is an easy B, with studying, an easy A.
Easy course if you do the work. Only thing you should worry about are the exams. Make sure to read the book as he allows a one page cheat sheet during an exam.
The nicest guy but lectures are soooo boring. Took him for CS60 and 61. Went to class for CS61 but cut out a lot. Everything you need to know is in the book he wrote. I didn't really need to attend. I took CS60 after 61. Only came to class for tests in CS60. It was an accommodation for my disability. Still aced it. Easy if you get relational db's.
His tests are in old English and as a international student i did everything i could with extra credit, even arranged study groups for the class to help them with their homework, but got low test scores because the tests were multiple choices and i felt that it was a lot of the same answers! I did all extra credit and got an C....
Helpful class!
Nice guy, but not good at teaching students with limited experience. Which is a MUST. Assignments are very ambiguous. This really should be an online class since I use google more than anything. I do not recommened anyone take this instructor if you are new to relational databases. You know what? Just plain avoid him.
it was a helpful class for me!
He speaks with a lot of experience. I'm in class atm and he's speaking about his experiences with artificial intelligence. He goes on lengthy tangents from the subject, but after his initial explanation, its clear enough. If you don't get it, consult the book (which he wrote). All rubrics are there, v clear. 3% EC for showin up. Everythins in sylab
Very well respected Prof at SMC. Lots of real experience with database.. Anyone looking at db should take CS60 prior to CS61 or CS65 - the latter two are coding and getting feet wet with relational db's is sometimes daunting. Dr. Rogler maintains more office hours than probably any professor at SMC. He is very approachable, and is glad to help.
Great teacher. His lectures might drag on, but if you interested in computer programming... take it you will learn something.
Professor Rogler is a nice man. His lectures can sometimes get boring, and the computers can distract you from the lecture. Gives a lot of projects, but as long as you follow the rubric you will do fine. Tests are tough, so make sure to study from the book - which he wrote -. TEXTBOOKS ARE ESSENTIAL and so is attendance!
I can only attest up to the middle of the semester since I had to drop this course for various reasons. My biggest issue with this course was that, unless you take CS60, CS61 will be very abstract. Expect to set up MS SQL on your own PC at your own time. The midterm is very specific on coding. .
This course is for students who really want to learn and succeed. The textbook is free and written by the professor. Midterms and final exams are open book, open notes. But you should be prepared and have read the book and notes. Doing all the projects will get you close to get an easy A since tests resemble what you learned doing the projects.
I appreciate it when professors are involved in their field: You will be impressed by Prof. Rogler's curriculum of experience--hell, he even wrote the textbooks used in this class. Prof.R's CS3 is a very easy, straightforward introduction to programming. Expect lengthy lectures, easy projects and extra credits. He even allows notes in exams!
Probably not even worth taking CS3 if you have a good head for computers probably should just skip it. Had no prior programming knowledge and didn't feel like I learned anything that warranted taking a whole class for. Nice prof, lectures can get boring and the language was pretty bleh. Class isn't that hard but watch out for Binary chapter cost me
Professor rogler clearly is a very knowledgeable man with lots of experience in his field, and his class is really easy if you just do your work. But his lectures are by far the most boring thing to endure. The man speaks on interesting topics but delivers them so boring and monotoned it makes it hard to pick up anything he's saying, but great guy
CS3 was the perfect intro to computer science. I know many other reviewers found Professor Rogler's lectures dry, but I actually found them complementary to the reading. Professor Rogler is thorough in his discussion of topics, and while he delves into the history of computing he still stays current. He goes over and above to accommodate students.
