amazing teacher!

He is an amazing professor. But if you're looking for an easy ethnic studies requirement this is not the course. Only take it if you're going to take it seriously, and it's totally worth it!
this course doesn't make sense
This was the worst class I've ever had. The class made no sense at all. By the end of it, I made a new term: Scheubing someone. It means getting kicked in the nuts. Just like this professor does to you for exams.
Horrible, horrible class, taught by a nut who finds illogical symbolism in absurd stories. And by the way, he's the only one who is ever right.
The class, although not such a great learning experience, is a great growing experience. And if you're willing to put in the time and effort, Scheub will give you a decent grade and help you with any problems or questions you have.
Amazing prof, amazing class. Must study hard. Excellent ethnic credit. I learned SO much. Amazing joke teller. Of all the classes I've taken (I have 210 undergrad credits), this one, and 3 or 4 others, will be remembered w/the utmost fondness.
it's a hard class but if you put the effort in it's worth it. he always talks about emphasis on improvement and he means it-- there's only three tests. i got a C and a B on the first two, and somehow ended up with an A in the class!
Extremely difficult, exams are impossible. Wants to help his students and is available alot, but he demands a ton of studying from his students. The literature is rediculously boring. And, what nut takes daily attendence in a lecture of 400+?
very interesting lectures but he is a bit crazy. extremely hard tests.
He has had amazing experiences, knows a lot and really believes in what he teaches. That makes the class interesting, but it is NOT easy. Tests are difficult.USE HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! He is always there and will tell you exactly what to write.
The rumors are true. This guy is hard. Just doing the reading won't be enough. Go to his office hours and he might remember your name when grading the exams. If not, you're better off going to Africa and trying to learn everything yourself.
His tests are quite difficult, but the stories are interesting if you are into puberty rite stories. There is a TON of reading, and I would definitely suggest using his office hours.
He keeps things very... interesting :D A 4.5ft tall firecracker with a combover reaching past his shoulders, but still my fav professor at this university!
DO NOT COME IN LATE....DO NOT LEAVE...and you will be fine. Quite an interesting fellow. He is even funnier than his wirery comb over. However he is fairly picky on his essay tests but that is probably because he grades 350+ tests by himself.
Scheub is awesome. If you are a serious student who likes to learn and improve your essay writing abilities, this is a great class. Go to office hours. He is sort of intimidating but he listens and tells you what you need to know.
Tests were extremely difficult. Go to lots of office hours, he'll know your name when he grades tests. Don't leave early or come late to class, you will be yelled at in front of lecture hall. Interesting class & professor! Learn a lot, but it's difficult.
Extremely helpful professor.
This class is challenging, and if you don't have much time for office hours, you're screwed. If you want an interesting class though and don't mind taking a mediocre grade, i reccomend. The prof is the most dedicated of anyone on campus to his subject.
Extremely difficult class, especially for freshmen. But, he is the most dedicated person you will ever meet. I am okay with getting a B or a C so I am not freaking out too much, but if you want an A, you will be ripping your hair out after the first test.
Awesome teacher and class. My favorite of all the classes i've ever taken here at UW-Mad.
He grades his tests extremely hard, but he's a freak of a guy and interesting to listen to. the stories are incredibly interesting, and he knows them well since he wrote the textbook. i recommend this class if you don't mind a B or C in it.
The class is a lot of work for three credits, but it is an interesting class, and Schueb is truly passionate about the subject! Definetly visit him during office hours. If you are looking for an easy "A" don't take this class.
African Storyteller, GREAT CLASS. Scheub is quite a character but extremely passionate about TEACHING African Storytelling. He's a rare breed that cares just as much about teaching as doing research. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! He will go out of his way to help you.
Very enthusiastic professor. however he does take attendance in a 400 person lecture every single class. he loves what he teaches and is good at it. grades on improvement - but is a very difficult grader. no worries if you get a c on your first exam, as long as you do well on your final.
He is an awesome professor, and it's a very interesting class. Very hard grader, but grades in improvement. I got a BC and a C on 2 of the tests, but an AB in the class in the end. WRITE THE OPTIONAL PAPER!
Evil incarnate. I wrote down EXACTLY what he said to do for each exam, followed it precisely, and still barely got a C. Be prepared to have him scream at you and insult your intelligence every day. As a scholar on the topic, he is easily the best in the world... as a teacher, though, he's appalling.
CRAZY!!!
EXTREMELY PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT HE DOES!!!!!!! whatever you do....do NOT come in late!!!!!!
A very dedicated and passionate teacher. Also very helpful if you go to office hours. There is never a dull lecture with him.
Mr. Scheub made the class a lot more interesting than it could have been. He knows everything there is to know about the subject and enjoys teaching it. I don't think that it was that hard, but only take this class if you like to analyze stories.
Hard class, lots of reading but really helpful prof.
Best class I took in college
AWESOME CLASS, FUNNY GUY, JUST DONT BE LATE
No Comments
He makes the class very interesting and funny. Just DON'T BE LATE!! He makes a big deal about it and yells at you infront of 400 people. On the exam the multiple choice are identicle to the practice exams he gives you, make sure you prepare your essay well though. Overall really great guy.
intense
Scheub is insane and crazy and absolutely wonderful. Holds office hours ~10+ hours a week (sometimes 20!). Show up early; they're popular. He hand-grades every durn exam, too. Exams are half multiple choice and half essay; the multiple choice is easy to study for. Prepare your essay ahead of time (you'll get the questions) and see him about it!
Prof. Scheub is insanely adept at analyzing the class' literature in lecture but seems not to realize that not every one of his students is also so gifted. That's not to say that he should have to, as success in a class should require a certain modicum of ability--along with effort, though to a lesser degree. A B is possible with a bit of both.
best class i ever took at UW!!
Scheub is INTENSE. He is incredibly knowledgeable and his lectures are exciting. He REALLY loves what he does. Though, DO NOT be late, DO NOT sleep in class, and PAY ATTENTION. He is a great prof and there's a reason the lecture hall is packed, but the exams are hard.
This class was alright. The professor is crazy but in a good way I suppose. He keeps the class interesting, but I just found the readings to be boring. There is no daily work other than reading; which I found the stories to be really boring. If you are interested in African Storytelling definately take the class.
Probably the coolest prof. you will ever meet, very inspiring. If you go to lecture and read the material this class isn't too bad. Multiple choice questions are so easy because he will****you on the essay. Never retell, never just overview the event in your essay. You have to set up a comparison and analyze heavily with your own ideas.
The multiple choice is not hard, and neither are the essays if you know what you are doing. Scheub listens to you and is very helpful if you go to his office hours and he will remember you.
Very helpful and organized. Definitely don't play this class off as an easy A
he explains exactly what he wants in the essays and you really need to take what he says seriously
This was an extremely interesting class. It is definitely not easy, and you must really listen to what he says he wants on the exams. This man is unbelievably intelligent and puts a lot of his life into this class. Really a good guy.
This class is NOT as good as everyone told me it was!!! The first half of the semester was really interesting, but when we got to the novels, going to class was unbearable!! Even though I really enjoyed the books we read, I could not stasnd listening to him lecture on on and repeating himself constantly, and he takes attendence so you have to go
African 210 was interesting but the only graded material are the way too short for the material exams (only the final is actually long enough for the test). If you're a picky writer who has a hard time pounding out content to preconceived formats then consider carefully taking this class. Repetitive. Write "optional" paper.
I really enjoyed Scheub's class. He was very energetic and passionate about his course and experiences. If you're late, don't even bother coming in, because he'll kick you right back out. This course really improved my interpretting skills in literature.
The class was really interesting, and he was a great professor. He kept a roster, and he would have it passed around He actually goes through it and knows who missed class. Eg., if you missed class and went up to him the next day, he would tell you that you missed your class. He has no TAs, and grades all the essays himself with long comments.

Very passionate and entertaining, but stubborn and has a HUGE ego. He's very rude and often refuses to help students. He talks so fast it's almost impossible to take notes. His tests are near-ridiculous, and he is EXTREMELY subjective in his grading. Says he grades heavily on improvement, but offers little or no room to do so.
Scheub is amazing and very helpful. If you go to him for help he will do all he can to help you understand; it just takes the minimal effort on your part to go to his office to see him. His talking speed is just fine if you know how to take good notes. You don't have to write everything word for word--sometimes you need to just sit back and listen.
Very interesting though repetitive. He is very picky on his essays on exams therefore not easy to get A's. He's also very approachable, although he seems like he's interested in your interpretation, he's not.
He is the most passionate, charismatic professor I've had so far in college. He cares so much about what he is teaching and, although he can be intimidating and a hard grader, if you put the effort in to meet with him during office hrs he will remember you and your grade will benefit. It's a hard class but A's are possible. It's worth taking!
He's a great teacher and is definitely there to help. Attend his review sessions, he basically gives you the answers for the exam. Go in to see him a lot, he's really helpful and really willing to change grades. The only thing is that for the essays, you have to write exactly what he wants, but he pretty much gives you all the answers.
Passionate, energetic. He seems very intimidating and unapproachable but loves it if you visit him. Very helpful 1 on 1. I highly recommend doing the optional paper.
Don't take this class, it is not NEARLY as cool as everyone tells you it is. For the novels section he spends 4 days on each one when he only has about 15 minutes worth of intelligent things to say on the novel in total. That leaves 185 minutes per novel of repeating what he already said OVER AND OVER. Write the optional paper if you do take it.
Finally a professor with some character. Everyday was a surprise with him. The dreaded long essay on exams should be dreaded because he is picky. Tips: go to lecture, go to review sessions, and do the optional paper. It is possible to do well in his class. He forces you think to think whether you want to or not!
At first i thought he was unneccesarily hard but I went for help to talk to him and realized that he really wants you to succeed. He is so amazing and interesting. I LOVE HAROLD SCHEUB!
mixed feelings. stuff we read was really interesting but lect got long. scheub is an amazing man and cares a lot about what he teaches. hated exams. mult choice fine(go to reviews) but essays suck. thought i understood stuff but i got torn apart. definately go talk to him a couple times before each exam-this is the only reason i got an ok grade
it's a love/hate relationship.

you would think that in a literature class, the analysis of the literature should be your OWN. this class is not like that. if you don't analyze it exactly (almost word for word) the way HE thinks it should be, then you're wrong. completely ridiculous.
love him. hes hard but he makes you wanna work hard. youll love the class if you do everything youre supposed to and really listen to the lectures and what he says. he is an amazing man.
Was very helpful and attempted to help me. Make sure you keep up on readings otherwise you will be screwed.
Harold Scheub is probably the most amazing person ever! He has experienced so much and really knows what he is talking about. This is a phenomenal class, especailly if you are interested in African culture. And he will help you if you ask! great 1 on 1
Most interesting man on the face of the Earth.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.He takes attendance EVERYDAY. yes really. ur allowed 3 absences then ur grade goes down significantly. you CANNOT BE LATE! he'll stop class entirely and kick u out to embarass u in front of every1. TEXT INTENSIVE. u need to write what he wants on the essays-nothing else or ur screwed. go visit him w/q's-i heard hes helpful.
A little crazy but super interesting, read the stories and write the paper. Very helpful in office hours.
I love this man! he is quite possibly the most fascinating person I've ever met. He is SO helpful in his office hours and really wants to get to know students. 2 pieces of advice: 1. Do the optional paper, it really helps your grade 2. DON'T BE LATE!
One of Prof Scheub's main points in many of the texts is learning to "play the game," and that is what you have to do in his class. Yes, you have to write what he wants for essays, but he tells you EXACTLY what that is. Seeing him in office hrs. is one of the best things you can do.
Tests are tough. Keep up on the text ( which is moderate ). Go to office hours. Go to class. Do the optional paper. Do all those things youll get at least a B. It's not as easy as it seems to do all those things. I don't reccomend taking this class you're first semester here. Highly reccomend it after that.
Besides the fact that his teach style is stuck in the 1950's, he is a hilarious man with an anal outlook on life. It is his way or no way...if you write what he wants, you get an A. Dont get up mid class to go to the bathroom either...
If you write what he wants to hear, you'll do fine. Never use your own opinion, it's a bad idea! It will improve your grade if you go in and talk to him before tests. Don't do the 10 page paper... that is supposed to "boost" your grade. It's a waste of time and energy.
You really need to meet with him to get a good grade. Learn how to write what he wants you to write and you'll do fine. He focuses on improvement.
This man is quite a character. He definately knows and loves this subject better than anyone. The exams are somewhat difficult because he has high expectations for his essays. He tells you the qustions ahead of time though and will tell you what to write if you go to his unlimited office hours.
I DONT advise taking this class first semester Freshmen year...they were really pushing it at SOAR and it was a mistake for me! A LOT of reading that you have to keep up in if you want a good grade. Write what he wants and you will do well
This man inspired me to become a teacher and a professor! (I graduated in 1993 from Madison). He is truly an inspiration. He is an entertaining speaker and a very generous professor. As far as I know, he grades ALL of his blue book exams-no small task. The guy has a heart of gold and deserves every Kudo he gets.
My favorite class and my favorite professor at UW-Madison!
Fascinating man. Truly old school. very passionate. Immense knowledge from years traveling in Africa. He really seems like a great man, and there needs to be more teachers like him. However, very hard. you must write exactly how he says. Folklore sucks, novels are awesome. You must constantly go to office hours and get to know him. take the class.
Class is mandatory. Make sure you do all the reading. Be prepared to write fast and take a lot of notes on each story and novel. He is very helpful with office hours and review sessions, however you need to write exactly what he wants and do it well which can be difficult at times. He is pretty funny though and the class is very interesting.
this guy reallly knows his african literature from many years of experience, but of course the downside of this is that, like most literature teachers, he thinks he's right 100% of the time. He's very arrogant and illogical when you see him in office hours. STAY AWAY from this class.
I swear he has a sample essay for each exam and grades according to how many of your words are different than those he has. Great guy though. I had a BC going into final, then went to office hours and made sure he knew my name. Suddenly he must have decided he liked my exams and I got an A. There's a life lesson on the importance of office hours.
This man really enjoys teaching. He is always available for help and is more than willing to answer any questions students may have. BEWARE the exams are not easy! He gives out the essay questions ahead of time and will help you develop an argument before the test so they are graded hard. There is a fair amount of reading too.
This teacher was terrible- Worst class I've ever taken.
Scheub failed students if they miss more than 3 classes, no matter what the reason is. I missed 5 classes due to my mother having terminal cancer. He failed me, despite me telling him about my mom. I did all of the coursework, took every exam and the final. I would have had a B. Worst experience of my entire college career. No humanity in him.
Very good professor.
This class changed my view on a lot of this. Harold is a great professor. Just make sure you prepare your essays ahead of time and you are golden. The multiple choice on the tests is not hard, he pretty much gives you the answers at the review session. GREAT CLASS
Professor Scheub is awesome! This was a really interesting class. As long as you attend classes and read the assignments, you will be fine. Attendance is MANDATORY. Never be late unless you want him to embarrass you. He tells you exactly what he wants on tests in lecture. Make sure to go to his office hours, because that really helps.
This is a great class. Just do not be late for class! He will make sure to embarass you and will not let you in! The exams are pretty easy, he gives you the essay questions before hand. Going into office hours definitely helps and he is very willing to listen to you. He can seem very intimidating at first, but he is a really nice guy! A great clas
Scheub has influenced generations of students. I still remember his classes even though I graduated already, and I am now teaching thanks, in part, to his example. If I had the time, and lived in Madison, I would take more of his classes - or just sit in.
I loved him, but I kinda hated him too. Just a few tips to anyone taking 210 from him: DO NOT be late! Go everyday! Read the books! Go to office hours! Take notes well! Laugh at his dry jokes, because he is Hilarious! And DO NOT yawn or look at the clock in the back of the Bascom lecture hall. He will rip you apart! I laughed EVERYDAY! Fascinating
I would highly discourage anybody from taking this class! Even if you know the material well it is difficult to succeed if you do not write exactly what he wants on the essays. I know people who took his class 10 years ago and loved it, but I think he's past his prime.
Bs on the two midterms but receved an AB ovrall due to the final. Final is prety much your grade. He always said he grades on improvement and he isnt kidding. Dont do opt. paper = waste of time. Bring laptop for notes he talks fast. See him in office hrs. Overall one of the most interesting guys in the world, also very funny but can drive you crazy
The prof is thorough and very passionate about what he's teaching and I loved the class; it was very interesting. DO NOT BE LATE FOR CLASS...he will yell at you and tell you to leave. Go to lecture, it's mandatory and he tells you answers that will be on the exams and what to write on essays. Overall a great professor.
One of the most fascinating people in the world. I started going to his office hours just to get life advice because he's accomplished so much in his. He is brilliant and clearly very passionate about the material. My favorite part were the Novels. Grading is based on improvement, I got a C and a B on the first exams and got an A in the class.
Well this (old) man is really one of the most interesting people you may ever meet. Has so many stories that he tells from memory. You CANNOT be late. He WILL kick you out of class. The class is difficult but if you dont mind going to his office often for your Ext. Cred paper it really does boost you a half letter grade. You must read all books!!!
This guy is the face of outdated teaching methods. The tests are basically taking exactly what he tells you and putting it in an essay form. If you make your own analysis of the stories, it won't go over well. Instead of teaching us how to analyze and interpret, he teaches you what he thinks, and only that, don't take this class.
Most important thing is to show up to class on time every day, if you're late you provide entertainment for the rest of class. His tests are not the easiest but he has a ton of office hours and it is very helpful when you go to them. He has an awesome memory and lecture can be pretty fun or really boring, kinda repetitive but with a lot of neat inf
Harold has a huge passion for African literature (and, possibly, a certain African storyteller whose pictures plaster the wall of his office). He grades wholly on improvement and HIS view of the stories. As long as you write down exactly what he says on the exam and do it a little better each time, you'll do fine!!!
It is pretty much impossible to please him on the essay portions of his exam, so you should go to his office hours. I really regret being lazy and not going. I really liked this class nonetheless, the stories were interesting & Scheub is really interesting. He is very profound. His final speech nearly brought tears to my eyes.
No room for your own thought or interpretation. His opinion is fact. Also, probably one of the rudest people I've ever met. This man should retire.
Very interesting class. He is usually very entertaining but at times could be repetitive. He wants you to learn his interpretation of the stories, not come up with your own. This makes lecture a must. If your grade on the final is your highest score it's your grade for the class. I got low Bs on both midterms but an A on the final and in the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FRESHMAN YEAR. The advisers were pushing it at SOAR and I would have done a lot better if I'd taken it sophomore year or later. He's really picky on essays (wants you to say his opinions on essays, no room for creativity)but will help you at office hours. Don't take it until you're confident as a student.
A passionate, inspired storyteller with great insights into literature, folklore, and the human condition. You have to meet him on his terms and tell him what he wants to hear, but it's a small price to pay in exchange for listening to him talk. Also, don't be late. Ever. It would be better to just not show up.
He's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his topics but I question whether or not he's really been to South Africa- his pronunciation of things can be atrocious and horribly wrong. He's also very close-minded about his essays. If you write exactly what he says, you'll get an A. An interesting and engaging class.
The poster below is an idiot if he believes that Scheub has never been to South Africa. The man is brilliant and has very deep insights regarding storytelling. One of the best classes here at UW-Madison, definitely take it if you can.
The class is extremely difficult but if you improve on each exam, he'll give you a good grade. He is more than willing to help you during his office hours. However, even if you go in a ton for help the essays on the exam are still difficult. Guy is hilarious though...very entertaining. Don't be late!
Extremely intelligent, witty, and funny. Has actually been to Africa for extended periods of time. Authored class' text. Style to be used on essay parts of exams clarified extremely well. Can get away w/o reading if good notes are taken. Entire grade is two midterms and final, and optional extra credit essay. Bumps up grade based on improvement!
Professor Scheub is the sort of professor who could not care less about how you interpret a text. DO NOT take this class if you like to express your own ideas because you will fail if you do not take his interpretations as law. This man is one of the most unapproachable professors I have ever met and should not be teaching anymore.
If you are reading this at SOAR, please save yourself and avoid this class. He's knowledge, and helpful at office hours; yet doing well on his essays is nearly impossible. That said, you could probably bluff your way to a C just by coming to class. If you want an A though, I'd really avoid this class.
Great lecturer but a terrible teacher with his 1950s style of teaching. He's VERY knowledgeable on the topic, so there is no interpretation allowed. If you ask a question & try to interpret, he will reject you instead of leading you in the right direction like a good teacher would do. Don't be late & read the text. The last exam has a lot of quotes
Hard Class for a Gen Ed. Make sure to take copious notes of his interpretations in lecture, because you have to feed them right back at him during the exams. Don't take this if you want an easy A!
I took the class Pass/Fail and passed. I wouldn't have taken it for a grade because it is an extremely difficult class. Really interesting professor who was always helpful in office hours. Don't show up late. I thought he was awesome.
Don't take this class! There are a ton of better literature classes out there. He was mean during office hours and mean in class. You never know if you're going to pass or fail his exams because if he doesn't like your essays you'll fail. I'm a freshman, I got an A, but it took a ton of work and effort.
I find him boring. If you lack creativity and don't like interpretations, this is your class. If you like to think, this is not your class. don't expect to be analyzing stuff because you won't. You'll simply write whatever he says in class in the exam. The only reason I go to this class is because it's mandatory. if u're late 1 min. u dont get in
WOW What a crazy ride that class was...AB on first, B on second, and apparently good on final so an overall A! Must go, DONT be late. Write EXACTLY what he tells you in your essays and you'll be ok, he's sort of helpful in office hours. Went from loving him, to hating him, to loving him again, CRAZY class, take as a confident student ONLY.
Very interesting class, Prof Scheub is extremely passionate and has some crazy awesome experiences he talks about. If you want to work and learn about something really cool, this class is great. I loved it and think he is a great professor!
Wants to hear exactly what he tells you, if you dont write the essays exactly how he wants, you will not do well. Actually read the books and follow his advice word by word and you'll be ok
Unbelievably interesting course. Professor Scheub is hilarious and will ridicule you in front of the entire class if you come in late. So be on time! YOU MUST GO TO LECTURE!!! He basically gives you the answers to the essays and multiple choice questions.
It's a difficult class, but go to his office hours and discuss anything you don't understand. He is very helpful and has a surplus of office hours. If you are going to be late or plan on missing class mroe than three times in a semester, do not take this class
He's a good lecturer but he repeats himself a lot and his grading system is absurd. It sounds easy: "write whatever he says on the exam essays" but it's almost impossible to get an A because he takes off a ton of points for everything that isn't exactly what he wanted. Getting an AB or B isn't too hard though, and I liked the books we read.
he is a TRICKSTER...do not take this class if you enjoy original thought on essay exams. multiple choice questions are ambigious and abstract.
Awful, only wants to hear exactly what he says. No room for creativity, very, VERY subjective. Don't take this class, he's a bitter man.
I wouldnt recomend anyone who's looking for an easy class to take this class.. the professor reads his lectures from notecards, and the lectures are mandatory and super boring
Craziness. I worked super hard on the first two exams only to get BC's on both. I must have done well on the final because I ended up with an AB in the class. However, I didn't think my final was that spectacular enough to raise my grade so much. I think he takes in to account class attendance as well. I attended every class, so I think that helped
The stories themselves are interesting, but rather than opening stories up for personal interpretation Harold simply tells you exactly what to write during lectures, but orders you to magically put it into your own words. Got A's on multiple choice but got killed in the essays. He is very helpful at office hours though
Worst prof of all time consider yourself warned DO NOT TAKE ANY COURSE BY THIS MAN!!!
Go to lecture if you want to succeed. He repeats things a lot and makes it VERY clear what he wants from you on exams, so it is your own fault if you do not succeed. Respect him and he will respect you. He's surprisingly hilarious at times and is very knowledgeable. Great class if you are a hardworking student!
do yourself a favor, and DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! he reads his lectures from notecards making them incredibly boring, the test questions are unclear and he is very particular when it comes to grading essays. There are much easier classes that satisfy a literature requirement.
Honestly one of the worst classes. He teaches from notecards, the essays have to be exactly the way he wants otherwise he will give you a bad grade. Seriously don't take this class
Difficult class. There are easier classes to fulfill your requirements
Definitely is a good 'storyteller' per say and definitely knows what he's talking about. Good stories and novels. Just when it got to the exams, the essays were so hard to write-only his analysis and interpretation of the literature we read were the ones you had to spit back out when writing your essay. Tough grader. Not as easy as I thought itd be
To succeed in this class, go to all lectures and see him in office hours. Although he tells you over and over again what he wants to see in your essay when it comes time to write it, he is such a hard grader on everything. But nonetheless, good man to talk to and an okay class. Don't leave early or come to class late.
Hilarious professor that is very passionate.Every thing is straightforward and while it does tend to get boring the third day he discusses novels, because it's so repetitive, it is worth learning.Grading is weird. Definitely write your opening argument and conclusion beforehand for the exams and be prepared when you go to his office hours;it helps.
Harold Scheub attempts to teach from an outsider's perspective the wealth of African myth. Interesting lectures, but at the end of the day, he's just another arrogant anthropologist that is confident that his vast experience makes him infallible. If you're interested in Folklore, avoid this class and take AIS 434 American Indian Folklore.
Fantastic class if you're into lit/storytelling. He has hilarious mannerisms and tells you exactly how he wants the exam essays written. Never skip lecture. Definitely not an easy A, but worth the effort if you're interested in the subject matter.
African storytelling will destroy you. In my college career I have only ever had 2 ABs and other than that all A's. I've worked harder for this class than any other class and am probably going to get a C. His grading on essays is ridiculous and his commentary is extremely vague. Just don't take this class.
I regret taking this class. It is going to lower my GPA because of his grading of the essay portions. During lectures, he just rambles on and repeats himself over and over. Yells at students when they come in even a minute late.
Lectures are mandatory, very boring and repetitive. He expects you to write perfect essays and will mark up your exam like crazy. Would recommend this class to an enemy.
The essays are easy if you take really good notes in lecture. The honors paper sucks, but you can go in as often as you like and he'll guide you. You have to follow his instructions on everything exactly. It's a lot of paying attention but the work itself is easy.
Very passionate and entertaining, but stubborn and has a HUGE ego. He's very rude and often refuses to help students. He talks so fast it's almost impossible to take notes. His tests are near-ridiculous, and he is EXTREMELY SUBJECTIVE in his grading. Says he grades "disgustingly heavily on improvement", but offers little-to-no room to do so.
Come to class, take notes, read the books and you will get the grade you want. He leaves little room for self interpretation which I don't think is a downside seeing that if you write what he says in class verbatim in your essays and get the grade you want. If you enjoy making you own BS literal interpretations up, this is not the class for you.
This class is very, very hard. In order to survive it is necessary to go into his office hours. Even doing that, the tests are still incredibly challenging. That being said, Professor Scheub is dedicated and passionate, and the subject is interesting.
Don't take this class. He's a awful professor, there is no basis for grading and he makes up his own paper formats. He's had an interesting career but that doesn't make him a good professor by any means. Also he's super grumpy.
I took this class in '95 and found it to be 1 of the most difficult courses I ever took. His multiple choice exams were incredibly difficult. I studied and studied and studied and went in to see him on multiple occasions and still got a BC. Loved the class, but the return was small for the enormous effort I put in.
Let me start by saying I completely respect this professor and he definitely has interesting experiences. He is very knowledgeable on the subject but not at all easy to understand and basically wants to hear his own words spit back at him, which shouldn't be hard, but for some reason it just is. He's grumpy, attendance is mandatory, don't be late
Let me just tell everyone that you have no idea what this man is going through and he deserves so much more respect. He's passionate about what he does and will respect you if you respect him. One of the nicest guys I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Stop judging him and get to know him, his life is stressful enough so give him a break.
This has to be one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. The essays don't allow for much leeway in terms of creativity. Do what he says and show up on time or else. I took this class in 2001 and finally passed it in 2003 :/ not ideal at all. I will say, that the man has my respect for doing what he has done just to be able to teach stories.
Worst prof I've ever had in my life. Grumpy and very unapproachable. Attendance/grading rule is ridiculous considering the class was 3x a week. I wrote my essays literally verbatim from lecture (as he wants) and he still got marked up on everything. He also lectures only by reading everything straight off of notecards, which is not teaching!!
This class is completely nonsense . Worst class I have ever taken here at UW Madsion
Attendance is mandatory. His lectures were uninteresting and he made it seem like the class would be very hard. I struggled to take notes because he literally wants you to only use his analysis of the stories and nothing else, but in the end I just said exactly what he wanted and got an A. I also did the extra honors paper, which was 2 drafts.
Jim Schreiber i took two of his classes and he was the best teacher I think I ever had. He was very nice helped a lot and we had a good relationship
I took African Story Teller 210 back in 1992-1993, this was by far the worst class taken. Prof Scheub used to be good but after getting a bad review from Rolling Stones of it being an easy push off class, he became hardcore around my time of taking his lecture. If you don't agree with his viewpoint of the MOTIF literature he will fail you period.
Teaching life lessons with children's stories is a skill that requires many years of dedication and passion. He has it! Remember his lectures 20 years later!
He was a little man with a gigantic ego selling his book to students at absurd prices. He was masochisticly rude and would stop class to humiliate anyone late. I was one who he publicly chastised which made me choose to skip the lecture if I was running 2 minutes late. He failed me for poor attendance.
