Great Professor. Best Economics Professor. Best Professor at edison and FGCU
damn good prof, you will learn alot if you listen
FREAKEN AWESOME! Really understands his stuff and is TOTALLY willing to help you understand 2. Rambles a lot but will let you know when you need to wake up and write down what hes saying.Lots of Extra Credit possibilities 2. Take him
haha I always left halfway thru the class but I got an A. Lots of extra credit, made it more interesting than i thought it would be. You do have to study for the tests though, but not extensively.
He's the best teacher on campus...He makes the class very interesting...and with real world data...if you really want to lear Economics,,,take this class...
A little eccentric, but a fantastic professor. Extremely helpful if you are not getting things.
Hey was (is) a great professor, he made learning fun. He's willing to help, no matter how long it takes.
The funniest professor I've ever had. He really knew the material and how to make it interesting. He also really cared about the students, he made sure we understood and always tried to help when we didn't. Great proffesor!
I love Professor Van Boven. First off, he's hilarious. He uses real life examples, and he knows what he's talking about. Also, he's very helpful. He's always willing and able (hehe) to help no matter what. He wants people to suceed in his class, there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. He's one of the best professors I've had.
He is awesome. He has notes that outline the lecture, all you do is fill in the blanks. Then, he gives easy homework and popquizes from the material. A max of 6 extra credit points can be added to your final grade (which is crazy)! I did well on the first 3 tests, so all i had to get on the final was a 61 to get an "A". Take this professor!
Prof Van Boven kept the class fun and exciting. I recommend him for future students and plan on taking him for my other economics course.
This professor was very proficient and knowledgeable. He made sure the materials taught were understood.
awesome professor
He's a great teacher. Make sure you go to class and follow his lecture notes that you download online. Also, do the homework. It directly relates to the tests. He's straightforward and student centered. I think some may just not like economics and take it out on the professor. I went in not really knowing what to think but I learned a lot and actu
A great professor who works extremely hard and loves to see his students suceed.
Prof Van Boven is an excellent professor. Goes above and beyond to help students. You have to study for tests, gives tons of extra credit. Make sure you get his web portal handouts, every thing on tests come from there.
I took Van Boven's both eco. classes.(Like an idiot!) And I advise you never to take both at the same time! I stuggled thoughout the classes but if you do the homework and attend class eveyday your points accumulate and at the end. That is what helped me pass the class. Profosser Van Boven is a great teacher and is willing to help you out in any wa
Great professor. he really seems to care about his students alot.I highly recomend him to anyone, so long as they are prepared to actually work. Its easy so long as you go to class, take good notes, and do the homework. if there were more professors like him around, edison probably wouldnt suck so much...=(
In order to get a good grade, just make sure you show up, get the notes from the web portal, and do the homeworks he assigns.
Listen, pay attention, get his notes, Do the homework, youll get a A
He is a very good professor. He outlines each chapter very well and that is what he teaches by. He explains everything and is more than willing to go over it again until you understand.
Definitely makes sure you know the material. Is a great teacher and funny too! Not the easiest class but not extrememly hard if you do the work.
The class was not easy, but Van Boven was helpful and interesting.
Extremely knowledegable prof with unique teaching style that keeps your attention. Explains difficult economics in a way that anyone can understand. Well organized entertaining lectures. Download his chapter outlines and STUDY them before and after class. Ask questions if lost. He is an outstanding prof who cares about his students.I LEARNED A LOT!
Van Boven made economics interesting and relevant to life and business. His classes demand consistent attendance, constant study. Do the h/w and come to class: it's easy to fall behind and get confused. You don't need the book, just study his chapter outlines, do h/w and ask questions. The man loves his graphs - make sure you understand them.
Professor Van Boven is one of the best professors at Edison. He has a true passion for teaching. He will always be there if you ever need help. If you do poorly in the class it is most likely the students fault. Professor Van Boven, thank you allocating so much your time and energy into everything you do.
This guy changed my life!! I have atrue passion and understanding of economics because of him. He is always available to help you. He even gives you his home number and you can call anytime(even at 2am) Always ready to talk about economics and life. DOWNLOAD THE UNIT HANDOUTS!!! show up for class, study collect your A. I am going to miss this gu
Step one: Download his files, bring them to class, fill in the blanks. Step two: Show up for class. Step three: Do all homeworks. Step four:skim chapters. Step Five: Learn the mechanics of the model(get help if needed, he is available) Step six: Study for tests. Step seven Collect your A. Awsome teacher and these are my six steps to success
Great teacher. Very entertaining. If you miss classes a lot don't take him, you won't pass.
VAN BOVEN IS EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE & CHARISMATIC. A RARE PROF WHO PUTS LOTS OF EFFORT INTO HIS INSTRUCTION. WELL ORGANIZED, EXCELLENT LECTURER, USES EX. FROM HIS BUSINESS, LIKES TO ANSWER QUESTIONS IN CLASS, VERY APPROACHABLE OUTSIDE OF CLASS. TESTS ARE DOABLE IF YOU LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAYS AND STUDY. IF YOU'RE A SLACKER, YOU'RE DONE. PERFECT PROF
He does a great job trying to lighten up a topic that is a bit tedious to start with. He goes out of his way to try to help his students; giving out his home phone numbers and quick follow-up emails. He even let me take my final without penalty after oversleeping and missing the first test. partying killed my grades- I'd deff recommend him though

Van Boven was one of the most entertaining professors ive ever had. The class material is a little difficult and Van B talks fast but he always takes the time to answer questions. He also gives you all the notes at the beginning of the semester and all you have to do is fill in the blanks as he lectures, they are great study aids.
This guy is money! Def a cool prof who knows economics, but u must work hard!! to pass. Do the homework. Attend class & listen, his hi-energy lectures have mind blowing humor that get u to understand econ. He is student friendly and very approachable outside of class. I will remember Van Boven's teachings for the rest of my life. VB IS awesome!
Really good professor. He really know what he is talking about. Easy to pass if you do all his homework. Very helpful, he even gives you his home phone number just in case you need something. Gives you a lot of feedback on how you are doing in the class. I didn't really care for Economics that much before but now I like it and understand it.
Hilarious teacher. very animated and makes the material intersting. always willing to help out. he gives you outlines of each chapter and practice questions. if u cant pass this class that means u r too lazy to put in the time to read the book and study. i got an A
Great Professor! Scares the heck out of you in the first day, if you don't drop it the first week you are up to an awesome class. But the guy does give a LOT OF WORK. I took during summer and is was overwhelming, but he knows how to teach. If you like economics take him. And if you just want to pass take Young but don't expect to learn anything.
I had a lot of fun and I really learn stuff that I will not forget. If you do all the extra work you will get a good grade. I recomend this professor. Be ready to learn. If you just want to fly by, don't waste your time. It was a very useful class. Money well spent.
Dont take this class if you expect an easy grade. Its very challenging. I studied for this class more than any other In spite of that, Prof. VanBoven is an excellent educator. He wants to see everyone exceed and is willing and able to help at any point in time. His lectures are clear and he uses great examples. He will excite you about econonomics
I compeletely agree with the comment below mine. Hit the nail on the head. He is an amazing teacher, with a big heart who truely wants to see you exceed your own expectations. Not an easy class, you follow the notes that HE makes for you, turn in every homework assignment, theres not reason for anything below a B. Tests are easy if you do hw!!
Van Boven is the man! If you dont like economics he will make it very interesting with stories and realy bring it to life one of the few teachers who is able to make boring textbook material come to life. The tests are a little hard but do the home work and you should be able to at least get a B
Van Boven is a superb prof. Very intellectual, caring, and awesome teaching skills. I looked forward to every class. He made econ applied, interesting, and understandable. It was a ton of work and study, but I learned more than I thought possible. Download his course packet and do all the assignments. By far the best prof I've ever had!
Hands down, Van Boven is my favorite professor at Edison. He makes the class very difficult but you will either learn the material or fail the class. He gives you the notes to fill out during class, but he moves through the material fast. Don't miss class or you will get lost.
He admits he is a difficult teacher, teaching the hardest course at Edison. He is very entertaining and extremely knowledgeable. Do not miss class. See him whenever you can for help. Stay on top of the work and study. With top notch effort a B is attainable.
Do not listen to the people who say he's a terrible teacher, he is one of the most outstanding teachers, he got me into George Mason University. He opens up your mind about many things and is notorious for his connections to real life situations. He will help you with real life problems and homework/work. No matter what. 100% recommend over any tea
He's a really great guy. He was mad rich and stuff so he really understands money. I thought it was hard but i do party too much. I got a C but i think i was supposed to get a D. I calculated how wat i need 2 get on my final and it was a 100% so he deffinately put a big curve on it so id pass. I emailed him and told him thanks for that and he said
Realllllly great teacher, borderline legend at Edison. I love Van Boven and I'm happy as hell he teaches my major.
If u want to make $$, transferring to a univ this prof is a must. Very intellectual w/ a great sense of humor, delivers Oscar winning lectures. Tests are not freebies, u have to think, but very fair. I studied a few hours every week, aced Eco.II & now acing Eco.I. His web portal course packet is awesome. Van Boven is the gold standard at ESC!!
Just do your work and you will learn so much! The best Professor I have had yet! He really cares and wants to see you succeed. Yes it's a hard class, but that's what college is for.
Prof Van Boven is the best. He keeps you awake with his funny examples and helps you whenever you need him. Micro is not easy, but if you go to class and follow his notes you should be fine. Great business man. Gives great advice.
Professor was funny but the class itself and material was very difficult. Tests were also very hard. Van Boven has a heart for his students. Studying is essential and reading the material.
He is an amazing teacher. If you want an easy "A" this is not the class to take. However, if you want to learn, he will help you do so.
Really cares about his students. His examples make everything clear, so I recommend you don't miss a single lecture. His homework helped me to really learn the concepts and the problems in the pop quizzes and tests are similar to the ones in the homework. If you are willing to work, this professor is the best! He recommends you take ECO 2 1st.
His homework helped me to really learn the concepts
Van Boven is a good prof. If there is anyone out there looking for an easy A, he's NOT the guy, but if you're looking for the BEST Econ Prof @ Edison, he's guy. I'm no Economic major, but I find him, helpfull, clear, with V Boven you actually learn Economics, life expl, he makes Eco a fun class, BUT you have to show up 4 classes, do your HOMEWORK!!
von b is a great profesor, butt i slacked this term and will be getting a D. I have already rescheldueld for him next term.
Professor Van Boven is great! The class is very challenging but if you read the book first and go over his notes you'll do just fine. He is also one of the funniest professors i have taken.
Greta teacher.. the guy knows his tuff and is willing to explain any questions. The class is very tough and you better go to class to understand whats going on. Do every assignment and perpare for 3 or 4 random quizes.. He's fair, you just have to push yourself and make sure you understand.. dont be shy and you will do great.
I can't say enough good things about this prof. Both courses were hard but Van Boven has a unique teaching style that got me interested in econ. He's a tough prof, but fair and very caring. He was always willing to help me understand. I learned so much and got my moneys worth. Great guy, awesome prof!
Van Boven is HILARIOUS! He is a VERY smart guy, who lives for economics. You can def see his passion. I took his "Honors" course and although its def not an easy A, he's more than willing to help you. If you pay attention and come to class you should be just fine. He's quite the character!
You will not regret choosing Professor Van Boven!!!! He has amazing teaching strategies and is by far, the BEST teacher I've ever had! He keeps the entire class on their feet. He's always moving around and emphasizes on the more important words. I can't say enough.. This is his passion.. So much his passion that it rubs off! You'll see!!!
Funny and really explains the material. AWESOME PROFESSOR!
very helpful
If you are GENUINELY interested in economics, this is the only guy you should take. He is actually an economist and experienced in the field. That being said, unless you pay attention real closely, you won't understand him. Very erratic. However, he is by far the most helpful Professor, and will allow you to even call his house! Only if u like econ
I found economics to be a hard subject but Van Boven is an expert in economics and knows how to teach it and make it interesting. I liked when he took the theory and related it to real world examples. He cares and was always available to help. The time and effort was worth it because I learned so much. Amazing professor!
Van Boven is the best Edison has to offer. If you want a quality education in economics, you want to take his honors classes. Study, study, study!
Van Boven was my prof for macro and now micro. This guy is an professional educator. He explains economics very well. His excitement and teaching style inspired me to learn by attending class, studying and asking questions. The web portal notes that you download are awesome. I highly recommend VB, especially in todays competitive world.
This was a wonderful professor! I had him for macro and although the homework assignments were sometimes due before they were covered, he gives you his # to call if you need help. He types up notes and you fill them in during class. He tells you the test questions the day before, if you study, you will pass! Very enthusiastic about econ! :)
A professor like him is rare. He really cares about the well-being of his students as well as their learning. The material is difficult to learn and understand, but Van Boven makes it fun and interesting. He's definitely a rarity among teachers today. I would definitely recommend his classes.
Professor VB is an outstanding professor. He is very passionate and first hand experienced in the economics field. Although lazy students watch out he lectures at more of a university level.I would consider it to be a harder level class at Edison but he gives you all the resources for success and cares deeply for students understanding the material
Prof Van boven is such a sweet man and very helpful! This is a very hard class if you are not willing to put in the effort. His lectures can be a little confusing but he will go over anything you don't understand. Homework every night and 4-5 exams the whole class. I would recommend him for this hard class
Outstanding professor who knows how to make economics memorable and worthwhile. Van Boven sets the bar high and is very caring and will always take the time to help you. The homework counts as one test grade and an A here is very doable, it will definitely boost your course grade. Van Boven's course is very engaging and business relevant.
funny professor, unique teaching method. Do the problem sets and his S.A.D.D. questions as he get 90% of his test questions from there.
Professor Van Boven's class is tough no doubt about it, but so long as you study and pay attention, you'll get the grade you want. If you take his honors classes, you hear more about his life which makes it all the more interesting!
Professor Van Boven is one of the best professors I have ever met! He has a true passion for economics and tracing! He makes class fun and interesting even though it is very challenging at times . Attendance is a must to succeed but as long as you attend and use the notes and online questions that he supplies you should do well in the class.
Prof Van Boven is awesome, economics is his life. He wants his students to learn the material and not just experience it. With that said he teaches at a university level. If you like actual econ then he's your guy. He offers 3, 50(x2 pts) question tests, 1, 100 question test, and homework worth up to 120 points. 450 is required for an A. I got a B.
Van Boven is extremely passionate about economics and does everything he can to make sure students are grasping the concepts he teaches. Makes himself available at all times for students and encourages students to seek assistance in order to help themselves succeed. Very friendly and has the funniest stories.
Harold van Boven is an awesome economist, and he knows what he is doing.
Awesome professor! I didn't have much interest in Economics before his class, yet he made it hilariously interesting. He's still my favorite professor at Edison. He's fair and wants you to succeed, but the class isn't an easy A. It won't kill you from difficulty either though. I highly recommend him!
Prof. Van Boven is very knowledgeable and experienced in economics and business. Plus his teaching style is very inspiring. I also liked that his standards were high because this challenged me to succeed. This made me feel important. Van Boven has high expectations for all his students and really cares if you learn and become successful.
The class is not the easiest, but if you study you will be fine. He uses the notes that he prepares more than the textbook and gets most of his exam questions from them. He is very helpful if you do not understand something and will clear up any doubts. He also will bump up your grade at the end if you are close to the next letter grade.
I took him for both macro and micro and I love him. He is my favorite professor to date. The material is not easy but if you pay attention and take some time to study you should do fine. He makes the material fun to learn, I always looked forward to attending his class!!
I had professor Van Boven for both Micro and Macro simultaneously, and got A in both classes. With his great sense of humor, you will a lot of fun. Definitely my best professor ever. He genuinely cares about each student and makes them feel comfortable in class. Show up to class, do all the assignments, don't procrastinate, and collect your A's.
I absolutely loved Professor Van Boven! However, THIS IS NOT AN EASY A. It is a challenging course, but he is extremely brilliant and helpful. You must print out his notes and follow along, as well as study for each test and do as many of the homeworks as you can. You get what you put into his class, but I have never had such an excellent teacher.
In his classroom, both allocative and productive efficiency are achieved. There is no competition that could match his economic knowledge output level, but perhaps economies of scale in his industry is so high that Van Boven can meet the society's needs all by himself. If you don't understand this review, then just take his class and you will. :)
Van Boven is a great professor and is very passionate about Economics. However, if you are someone whose first language is not English, it can get confusing at times. You just have to print out the notes and follow his lectures.
Best Economics professor hands down, better than I had at my other large university. For both Micro and Macro, you don't need the textbook if you print out the notes and take advantage of his office hours. Cares a ton about his students and is always willing to help, if you show interest in the class you should have no problem getting an "A"!
Economics can be a very difficult subject however Professor Van Boven makes it easy! In order to be successful in his class, go to class, read the book, and then study his notes! His notes are your best asset! If you ever struggle in either of his classes, go to his office hours. He WILL help you understand the material!
Make good use of the study guides and do not try to cram the night before each exam and you should do fine. He really gets into the subject and uses real-life examples to illustrate his points in class. Overall one of the best professors I've had in a while.
Make sure you print out the class notes!!! The class AND the tests are literally built around them (be sure to print out the entire unit because he may get ahead). Study them and you will be fine.
Van Boven is one of the best professors I ever had. I dislike Economics but I took him twice just because of his personality. His lectures are hilarious and he is the only professor I know to use the word "papaya" as a euphemism for procreation. He is not an easy A but follow the notes and do the message board questions and you'll pass.
Professor Van Boven really tries to make the material fun and engaging for his students, but he definitely does teach at a University level. If you're not willing to work, don't take his class, but if you want a comprehensive education in economics with a side of humor, he's the Professor for you.
HJVB is an amazing professor, by far the best I've taken. He gives you 4 test for the semester and homework occasionally. (each are worth 20%). His lectures are so entertaining and he really tries to help students understand. The course is tough, but with his notes, textbook and studying atlas 30 mins each day, you will get an A. Highly recommend!!
I passed his tests like "boom bam bing". I couldn't stay awake through his lectures and didn't print the study guides, but all you really need is to study the textbook thoroughly. You can't pass without it. He's a funny guy and gives million dollar advice. If the course really is at a university level, then transferring will be a breeze.
Amazing professor he is super passionate at the subject and you will learn so much
Harold Van Boven is an excellent professor. He teaches at a university level and makes you work for it, be is highly interested in each individuals success. As long as you print out the chapter study guides and set aside time for studying you will most likely pass and will definitely walk away with something.
Van Boven is very passionate about this subject. Long lectures but he basically hands you everything that will be on the tests and hw. No need to buy book. (Prints out notes) He is understanding and he WILL help you if you need it. Very chill and at times funny. Would take again. Awesome professor. Just pay attention
Van Boven is hands down the greatest man ever seen at FSW. His economics classes are easy and you'll also learn a lot useful stuff. His notes and problem sets are all one could really possibly need in order to get high As in his tests. Marginal benefit of taking Van Boven's economics class should be high enough to cover the opportunity cost. :)
Van Boven is an brilliant prof who is driven to help you succeed. His teaching style makes economics relevant. I looked forward to every class because he challenged me to think. The problem sets are equal to one test grade so do them all. Study and do not fall behind and you will get a high grade. Van Boven is very approachable if you need help.
Van Boven is is the best, he really cares about his students. He makes economics fun and relevant. The tests are not easy so you do need to study for them but if you study his notes and do the problem sets (HW), you can definetly do well in the class. I took him for macro and micro and I learn so much.
Outlines all the notes for you so all you have to do is fill in some blanks. Tests are a little difficult, but if you study for them you'll be fine. Homework can be challenging sometimes but he is always willing to help and is passionate about Econ. Definitely a great teacher!
Professor Van Boven is a great professor! His class isn't a class where you can just attend and get through it. You have to actually think and listen to what hes saying. Do the problem sets and really try to do them right. They cost for more of your grade than you think. I'm taking him again for Microeconomics!
Shows respect for students. Clear explanations backed up with chapter outlines and his own real-life business experiences. Pay attention. Homework will increase your grade lots! Answers e-mails promptly. Read the material before class, do his SAD questions and Canvas discussion questions, and keep up. Nice guy and outstanding prof. Learned a lot.
I really enjoyed his passion and sense of humor. He used real life situations to explain concepts. He doesn't pass out A's so you have to earn it, but you actually learn important things to use in the future. He is always offering office hours to make sure you pass and truly cares about his students. Hands down the best teacher I've ever had!
One of FSWs best profs. Van Boven is extremely intelligent in economics, business, and investments. He LOVES teaching so his students can apply theory for their benefit. Study the chapters before and after he covers it, do not fall behind. Do the Canvas Discussions and all the problem sets. There's no free lunch :) Outstanding prof and motivator.
One of the best professors I have had at FSW thus far! Always willing to help you with whatever you need and gives you all the information you need for the tests. If you print out the notes, do the problem sets and do the discussion questions you will without a doubt pass this class! Lectures are long but he seemed to keep the students interested.
Professor Van Boven is the best professor I have ever had! If you need any help with ANYTHING just stop by his office and he will be more than happy to help you. He is the best!
He is the best economics professor ever, take him, you won't feel sorry. He is very helpful and he will always help you with anything you need! The class it's not an easy A, but the knowledge you gain is priceless! I loved his class, it was really interesting!
Professor Van Boven is a sharp professor, of university caliber, who teaches with an incredibly effective style. If you are planning to major in economics at a university, Van Boven will undoubtedly prepare you.
Got off topic in class a lot. Material is somewhat difficult to understand, tests are challenging. Homework its very straightforward and easy to earn all points on. Not an easy A, that's for sure. Average grade in my class was B-C.
Professor Boven is great at what he does. He knows his material and knows alot about the subject. His notes are straightforward and very helpful for studying. His always willing to help you and he has alot of office hours. His test are tough and tricky but as long as you study they're not bad. Overall his a great professor.
tough course. very helpful. second time taking him.
He's very passionate about ECON, which makes the class interesting. The SAD & Discussion questions are on his tests. Get high scores on homework, it will help your grade A LOT. DON'T SKIP CLASS. Overall, he's VERY helpful when you ask for help. This is not an easy A, you must work (just don't fall behind and understand EVERYTHING) to get an A.
I expected the course to be difficult but Van Boven KNOWS economics and how to make it clear and understandable. The lectures were so awesome that I did not want to miss any of his classes. I had trouble at first but I stopped by his office for some advice and am glad that I did. VB is a smart and caring prof who changed my life for the better.
HVB is a great professor. The only reason why people say his tests are hard is because they don't study for them. Literally everything you need to know is in his outlines that he provides and the discussion questions that he also provides. He prepares you for this class, just put work in.
I find his lectures kind of confusing sometimes because he tends to get off topic. He puts disscussion questions on canvas that will also be on the tests so that kind of helps. The homework is pretty difficult. I have to look in the book sometimes because I can't find it all in the notes. He is also a tough grader on homework.
I don't rate my professors much, but when I do, it's for the most interesting professor in the world.
Van Boven is all about hard work and success. He will challenge you. If you have the maturity to attend class, use his Canvas notes, study, do all the problem sets, ask questions, and stop by his office for help then you will succeed. His knowledge of economics, caring attitude, and enthusiasm made the course worthwhile. I learned so much!
I took Van Boven for micro and will take him for macro. He is a wow professor because of his knowledge of economics and great teaching methods. He ran a successful business and also an investment firm. This prof's course is an excellent value for your money from the examples he uses. You're held accountable for your grade but it is well worth it.
Professor Van Boven is by far my favorite professor I ever had. He helped me with every question I asked. If you want to learn and do well in this class show up and put the work in to study out of class. The materials will last you a life time.
When Van Boven lectures about economic concepts, he does not regurgitate information found in the textbook. He speaks from experience and uses realistic and relevant anecdotes to bring the concepts to life. The study guides and the optional tests (that are included in the class notes) at the end of each chapter are great places to study from!
You must do homework which is hard because I am not very good with numbers, however if you go to his office hours he will totally help you. Plus he lets you know what will be on the test. He is super funny and easy going, but go to class. In his class you either do really good or fail.
Josh- Harold Van Boven was a great micro economics teacher. I took him on summer A so it was a 6 week class with a lot of information in a short time but that's what you get when you take a summer class. Gives notes all stuff for the rest comes directly from the notes. 3- 50 Q tests and a 100Q final. adds a lot of life experience to make easy learn
Took him during the summer and was amazed on how much I enjoyed this class. If you want to learn a lot about economics and are willing to put forth some effort, I highly recommend taking him. He uses many real life examples to help students understand a concept. Very knowledgeable and my favorite professor so far!
Van Boven is the best professor I have taken. He can take an analytically challenging topic like macro or micro economics and make it easy to understand. He is always available to answer questions and is always at office hours on time.
Prof Van Boven is a great professor. Clear with everything and his lectures are amazing. He really wants his students to do well and you will always hear him ask if anyone has questions. He puts everything in your hands in order to succeed. Requires work but it is very doable. He will sit with you however long it takes for you to get the material.
He is a very good and very inspiring professor, although he speaks too fast sometimes.
Professor Van Boven is an extremely smart guy with a great sense of humor. He is very passionate about teaching and motivating his students to do well. Economics is challenging but Van Boven makes it worth the effort. I found his lectures to be interesting and full of useful information, especially his real life investment examples.
Professor Van Boven is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had. Given how difficult the class is, he does a great job at helping the students understand. He has so much experience in economics and he relates it so well to the lectures. Just like every class, you need to study. But the notes are a perfect outline to the actual test.
What a wonderful man! I recommend taking him. While he does get off topic, Prof Van Boven is there for his students! If you put in the time and work, so will he. Visit him during his office hours if you need extra help, (Make sure you make an appointment!) and he'll show you his old textbooks, stories, etc.
I received the highest test score on every test in his summer eco2023 class and I can tell you, it is very eásy to succeed in his class. It is a lot of work but if you just read the book and do his problem sets you will pass. You can always go to his office for help
Van Boven is by far the most inspirational professor I've ever had. He's very old school and really cares if the students understand the material. DO NOT miss a class!! A lot of lecturing but his notes that he provides help so much. If you need help, he's always available. If you're struggling, ask for help!!!
I took him for Macroecon and he was amazing, yes the work is hard but you learn a lot of stuff. He half way convinced me to change my major to Econ. His problem sets are short and answers found from his notes, tests are hard if you don't know your stuff but he always answers questions even during tests, he like participation so speak up! Got and A.
Take him, he is really good.
Prof. Van Boven relates well to students. He is very knowledgeable and obviously loves teaching economics. I found the course interesting because Van Boven applies economics to real life examples that kept my attention and helped me understand the theory. Do not skip class. Do the homework. Ask questions in class or visit his office. Great prof!!
Professor Van Boven has a lot of experience in this field. He has many stories to put things into perspective and make them easier to understand. This class is challenging and requires a lot of studying. Professor Van Boven has flexible office hours and is willing to help his students. He is a great professor and wants to see his students succeed.
Van Boven is such a nice guy. He will do everything in his power to help you understand the material as long as you put in the effort. His lectures are super boring, but he tries to make them interesting. Sometimes he goes too fast but if you ask him to slow down he will and he often gets off on tangents.
Probably one of the best professors I had at FSW. Even though economics is pretty rough for everyone, it made me comfortable knowing that he was so accessible and willing to help if you wanted. Incredibly cool & funny. Would absolutely take again
Van Boven is one the best profs I have ever taken and the most memorable. He has high standards and will prepare you for university work. He takes complex theories & makes them understandable through his many examples. I was challenged, studied a lot, did all the homework assignments, but was very happy that I learned so much useful information.
Professor Van Boven is an extremely caring man always willing to help a student struggling or someone who "has the tickle to draw a graph". Though his course was very challenging for me, I managed through by going to almost every class, visiting him during office hours, and studying a lot. He does everything to help his students pass.
Van Boven is such an amazing teacher. His class is not an easy A, but it is also not hard. He actually cares about you learning the material. He is always 110% willing to help you learn. He makes time for you even after his office hours. He is honestly a caring teacher. Tries to help everyone succeed.
Best professor I have ever had if you're thinking about taking his class, Do It!
I found Van Boven to be an amazing professor. He focuses not only on the economics theories but also how to apply them. The real life examples and stories he uses makes the theory understandable and class fun to attend. If you need help Van Boven will go above and beyond to work with you. I will never forget this prof and what I learned. Take him!
Not much homework, just studying. He really cares about his student, especially those in his honors course. Their is one paper, and his tests are okay. Just make sure you study the guides that he goes through and class and you will pass! He does what he needs to do to have his student pass.
Van Boven is fantastic. The tests are hard but if you pay attention, and ask questions, you'll do fine. Microeconomics is tough, but he'll help you through it as much as you wanna ask for help. Go to his office, call him (he gives you his home number), ask him to go over homework and tests with you. He outlines the book so no need to buy it :)
Van Boven absolutely loves economics. His enthusiasm is catching. I found him to be very dedicated to helping me understand the theories and how to use them. The material that he provides on Canvas is a must. His teaching methods and can do attitude led me to be more successful in other areas. Prof Van Boven is truly a remarkable man and professor.
He gives you the notes he teaches from, the homework is based off of the notes as well as the tests. He gets off topic easy and is graph heavy in class. He will teach you half a chapter and then the homework is due so you have to teach yourself half of the chapters. If you ask for help he will help.
I took Van Boven for macro and micro. Tough subjects taught by a caring prof who is very knowledgeable. His personality and teaching style helped me want to go to class and learn. Study his material on Canvas and do not fall behind. I liked being challenged and had to study to earn my grade. My money was well spent. Van Boven is an asset to FSW!
Professor Van Boven is one of the most inspirational and caring professors. Van Boven is very accessible outside of class and genuinely cares about his students. If you want to succeed, use his notes during class. Highlight, take notes, review, do the SAD problems. I also have his problem sets with me in class and answer them as we go along.
Van Boven is passionate about economics and it shows in his lectures! It's easy to pass his class if you do the work. Print the notes online and fill them out in class. There are practice questions at the end of each chapter that you can use to study. Van Boven cares and is always available to help. You even call him if you have any questions!
This professor is very kind and really cares about his students. He also has "problem sets" which are often used as study guides for exams. I would definitely recommend him for any business major.
Class is very easy as long as you go to class and study his notes. If you skip class you will miss the material which you need for homework and the tests. Study his notes and you'll be fine. He has 3 tests 1 final and the homework total is weighted like a test. He likes to be funny and he's very chill great professor! Taking him for Microecon too!
I liked that Van Boven used his own life experiences and concepts from his businesses and not the textbook examples to help me understand microeconomics. He is a superb prof who delivers amazing lectures that you do not want to miss. His knowledge, caring attitude, and teaching methods were all awesome. Van Boven is a must take prof!
Fantastic professor.
Van Boven really cares if you do well and has a personality and teaching methods that inspire. VB makes good use of Canvas. He publishes his awesome lecture notes. I was prepared for most classes because I read the notes before lectures & asked questions. Thus I did very well on his tests. Practice quizzes, problem sets, and grades are on Canvas.
A professor like Van Boven comes along once in a lifetime who you will never forget. He made micro sooo enjoyable and understandable. The examples he used added lasting value to my learning. If I was not sure about something I asked questions or stopped by his office. He is super smart, friendly & humorous. I'm also doing macro with VB. He cares!
One of the top Professor's at FSW! He is a great instructor and is caring to all of his students. Overall the course is a bit difficult because it is Macroeconomics, but he will try to make is easier for his students to understand. Professor Van Boven is a great person, all his lectures are based on personal actions he experienced. :D SUMMER
Professor Van Boven explains a difficult subject with real life examples in order to help students understand the material. You earn your grade in his class. He makes himself readily available but don't miss class - too much information. Study and do the homework. He cares that you learn - and with effort you will!
I was amazed at this profs depth of knowledge. His way of teaching made me look forward to going to class. He is a very serious but caring prof. Study, do not skip class or fall behind, ask questions and you will do fine. Doing well on the problem sets & his Canvas discussions bumped me up a letter grade. I highly recommend Van Boven for economics!
My most favorite prof at FSW. Van Boven lives to help you excel at economics and everything you do. His courses are very organized and interesting. To do well I had to put in a lot of effort but it was well worth it because I learned so much. I wish he taught more than macro and micro. Caring, outstanding professor!
Van Boven puts a lot of effort into his class because he has a passion for teaching economics, cares if you understand the material and do well. His use of Canvas and awesome lectures motivated me to study. If the economics was difficult he would use either his personal business experiences or humor to get it to stick in your mind. Take Van Boven!
van boven is the best professor you could ever take for economics. the book is not required. if you print his notes you'll pass. Easy A. pay attention in class, you'll need to listen in order to fill in the notes. pay keen attention to the practice test. Go to his office sit and talk you'll pass.
Van Boven is the best prof I've had at FSW. Micro is hard and this guy teaches at a university level. But his lectures are amazing and got my attention because he uses real life examples. You must study and visit his office if necessary. Van Boven is very approachable, caring, and inspired me work hard. I also took him for macro. Van Boven!!
Very amazing and inspirational professor for economics.
Great
I was having personal problems outside of college that interfered with my studies. My grades were falling in all my courses. I met with Professor Van Boven and he was very understanding, flexible and accommodating. He helped me with the economics classes I missed. When I left his office I felt more confident and always had a smile. Awesome prof!
The bes professor I have ever taken at FSW. Highly recommend him.
The teaching style and personality of Van Boven makes his lectures fascinating and memorable. The examples he uses shows how important economics is to your life. I was so amazed I changed my major to economics. To succeed do not fall behind, do the problem sets, attend class, visit his office regularly. VBs micro is next. Top notch prof, nice guy!
This is the best class I have taken here at FSW. Professor Van Boven is interested in the student's success. The lectures are fun and informative. Just fill out the notes he provides and study them for the test. Van Boven is interesting and has many stories to tell that pertain to the lecture. Would recommend this to class to anyone.
Van Boven is a scholar who is knowledgeable, serious & professional. This is college and micro is not easy, but if you study, do the problem sets, attend all classes, stop by his office you WILL SUCCEED. He is very engaging when he goes off on interesting tangents relating micro to owning a business. Outstanding & caring prof. I'll never forget VB!
I will never forget Prof. Van Boven. He is a friendly, humorous man and an expert economist who gives memorable lectures. He knows how to connect with students so that they understand and apply a tough subject. His use of Canvas makes the course very organized and will boost your grade. I studied a lot and went to his office. Van Boven is a legend.
This guy has a passion for teaching economics. Van Boven's lectures are amazing. They kept my attention and were clear enough to help me understand a hard subject. I liked that he always related macroeconomics to his experiences in investing in stocks and real estate. If you want to learn macro and how to make money Van Boven is awesome.
He was a great teacher he answered questions and explained. I only used the textbook twice. He has fill in the blank notes to follow along with in class. Homework for half of chapters. Tests were easy if you studied the Discussion Question and questions at the end of notes. Great teacher hard material.
He's a great Professor, somewhat of a hard grader. However; He will try his best to help you pass. His lectures are truly different, he makes them exciting and memorable! Overall an amazing passionate Professor, and a great person! Just do the problem sets, and pay attention in class, he has fill in the blank notes and he goes over them in class.
One of the best professor's i have ever had at FSW. truly cares about every one of his students. Tests are easy if you study the material and show up for class. Plus he also gives a lot of extra credit on his tests and assignments, truly recommend this professor if you want to learn a lot about economics.
Awesome professor, awesome man. The power of Van Boven is that he really strives and works hard to help you get the best economics education possible. One reason I studied so much in his micro class was that he made the course so interesting that I wanted to reach the top. Returns graded material quick. Has lots of office hours. Very smart guy.
Professor Van Boven was not only very knowledgeable but also fun to be around. You can tell he loves what he does because he puts a lot of effort into making his lectures interesting. He makes everything understandable and connects well with students. His tests are challenging so must pay attention in class and study. His use of Canvas is awesome.
Van Boven is very passionate and determined to help you learn economics. You have to study and do all the problem sets. But he creates amazing lectures that kept my attention with his real life applications that I enjoyed. He is very student friendly and likes it when you take the initiative to ask questions in class. I highly recommend Van Boven.
If you are a business or finance major Van Boven will definitely challenge you but he is THE prof to take for economics. He was a very successful businessman in the past. Going to class was worth more than I paid because he connected micro with entrepreneurship and actually running a strong business. He will go above and beyond to help you succeed.
Van Boven was one of the most knowledgeable and exciting profs I've taken at FSW. He used his many personal experiences and business and investment decisions to help me understand the theory so that I could apply it myself. Study the chapter outlines on Canvas early, attend all classes, do all the problem sets, and do not put off seeking his help.
Van Boven is fun to be around plus his knowledge and way of teaching made him unforgetable. I was having trouble early so I visited his office. He really cares. Told me how to get an A or B in his course. Read the chapter outlines he writes before lectures. Do all problem sets. Study each week. Ask questions. I got my first A at FSW. Amazing prof!
While he certainly helped me increase my chances of getting a better grade through his after class help, he is most memorable to me as the man who told me the private sector is the only real way to instigate social change. It is because of his advice I decided to study law. He saw through my naive idealism and pointed me down the right path. Thanks
Professor Van Boven is by far the best professor I have ever had. He has an amazing personality and loves to keep the class laughing. He is a very successful business man who is a professor just to teach us. He doesn't need extra cash! He has real life examples from his life for any topic and question covered in the class. I HIGHLY recommend him
Van Boven is an awesome professor. He's a well respected guy, and has my full recommendation. Attendance is non mandatory, but you need to show up because the material is somewhat tricky. You need to show him you care, even if you're struggling and maybe lose hope. If you put in effort and turn in all the work, he will most likely pass you.
Absolutely incredible man and a very fair / easy class .
Stellar professor.
Awesome prof! Unforgetable mentor! Outstanding fellow! Tough course? Yes, but Van Boven knows how to explain complex economics to make it understandable. Do not miss class and do not postpone studying. Tough prof? Yes, but only is you slack off and do not use Canvas. I found his positive, can do attitude contagious. Van Boven is a must take prof.
Van Boven is organized, very energetic, and super intelligent. If I picked a course that will benefit my career the most it would be his microeconomics. His critical thinking tests are more lecture based than textbook based so make sure to prepare for class, attend every class, study. I loved that he played music before class started. Very upbeat.
Very intelligent man. It was not an easy class but he did provide everything needed to pass. I wish every professor was like him. It was the only class worth my money at fsw. I enjoyed going to his class and learning new concepts.
Wonderful Professor! I am taking him again for Micro in the Fall. You must study his problems sets, SAD questions and review the Chapters in order to pass the course.
I took Prof HB for Macro/Micro in 2016. First of all; these two classes will set your foundation--rock solid-- for any economics program you may wish to pursue. If you want to set yourself up for success and actually learn a thing or two and are willing to put in some work, do yourself a favor and take his courses. I owe my Economics degree to him.
Van Boven really knows his stuff. His lectures are engaging, thought provoking, and sometimes hilarious. He makes economics come to life. Since the concepts are challenging you should read and study the material before each class. It's all on Canvas. I highly recommend him if you are truly interested in learning and being successful in the future.
In a very intellectual and humorous way, this professor will explain not just the world' pics and digits of ECO but one may be able to plan for ones' future listening his lectures. He's very intuitive. Seeing class can't answer a question, he will dilute it with a funny yet real life example, so all got it. No stressful exams, he has time for all.
Van Boven will inspire you to excel. The subject is tough but his awesome knowledge combined with his one-of-a-kind teaching abilities will keep your attention. Asking questions and studying a lot is a must to pass. His Canvas package makes the course well organized. I can't wait to take his micro class. Van Boven left an important impact on me.
Van Boven is a super smart & caring prof who lives to help students understand economics. Do not miss any classes, he makes efficient use of class time. He uses his own personal stories to give meaning to economics. His financial investing & business examples make for amazing lectures. Plus he will always find office time to help & encourage you!
I found this professor to be awesome. He made macro interesting. I especially liked how Van Boven related economics to making money in the stock market. There are no tests, but you take 3 adventures and a final adventure. Do all of the homeworks. To pass this class you must attend class and study. Learned a lot. Taking him for micro.
He really knows what he's talking about. Given the fact that economics itself is a challenging subject, he finds way to engage you into the lecture through humor. There are problem sets (homework), three adventures (tests), and a final. He will help you if you need it and truly cares about his student's succeeding. Definitely recommend him!
I took Van Boven for both Macro & Micro. He's an excellent Professor. He cares about his students. Read his notes, SAD questions, and do all Problem Sets. The test questions are all from his notes, SAD questions and problem sets, word from word. Not tricks! Study and you will pass!
I liked that VB took a multidisciplinary approach. His lectures connected micro to business, entrepreneurial, investment, and political issues, to name a few. Fair and caring prof but you must show him that you want to work to succeed. Study lots, do all the problem sets, and don't fall behind. I learned more than I thought possible. VB is great!
Despite being hard to understand at times he clearly laid out what to expect. Three tests, 8 homework assignments, and 100 question final. Show up to class and use his note guidelines - there easy to follow. Ask questions. He uses everyday examples to try and make it easier to get. He is a bit quirky but he knows what he's talking about.
In this class there is no such thing as a free lunch. No curves, no extra credit. His focused and engaging lectures are a must. The questions on Canvas and the problem sets count for more than you realize at first. He applies everything to his actual economic experiences. Van Boven is wealthy and really cares if you excel. Fabulous prof!
I took this macroeconomics class through dual enrollment and the college gods blessed me with this professor. I learned what I now know all thanks to him. He is caring, funny, and has AMAZING notes. He is clear on what he expects and is very approachable. He's a genius in economics. I did lots of studying with his notes and was very successful.
Van Boven is a bit hard to understand, but his notes are concise. If you study them, you'll get an A. I didn't study as much as I should've and I received a B. I got C's on tests and A's on the homework, and it averaged out to a B. I'd suggest doing the notes with him, not the problem sets. He also doesn't show the grades on canvas. 7/10
I had him for microeconomics and now am continuing with him for macroeconomics. He is good at explaining things if you specifically ask, you need to speak up about questions or concerns. He doesnt give curves or extra credit and talks very fast which makes him hard to understand. I learned the most from his UNIT packets and the SAD questions.
His tests are tough, I studied everything, but he is way too hard to understand and he speaks so softly, I cannot hear. You won't do well if you won't show up to class. I missed one class, I missed the entire chapter, and i was so lost during that problem set. If you have another option, TAKE IT. I don't recommend at all.
I have never rated a professor, I normally just take a quick peek to see what I'm getting myself into before I choose a professor, I read these reviews thinking this professor is great, he's not. He is absolutely awful, pls do yourself a favor and not take his class. I barely passed by watching crash courses on youtube.
He is nice enough but the worst lecturer. The classes are in the Summer so it is made worse with the classes being 4 hours long. He speaks soft and seems to keep gettig ahead of himself so to correct it he goes back, but he does this so often it starts sounding like a stutter which can drive you mad in a lectured class. Don't take if able to avoid.
enjoyed the class & he is a very helpful
Van Boven is a great prof who has many desirable teaching skills. The chapter outlines that he writes makes each class flow smoothly. To avoid biased in-class discussions he relies heavily on graphs. His own real life business examples makes it easier to understand the theory. If you need help he is always there for you. Knowledgeable, caring prof!
Wow! This prof is an economic theorist whose teachings will capture your attention. He uses his personal experiences in the stock & real markets and business to make the theory understandable. Hard course so you must study. I took him for macro and now taking his micro. I am learning much more than I expected. He will help you achieve success.
professor van boven is a really solid professor. he genuinely cares about all of his students. he gives good feedback but most of all; he wants every student to do well in his class. his tests are fairly easy; just review his notes!
He is overall the most down to earth professor. He genuinely cares for your success in his class.
Professor Van Boven was an interesting professor to take. While very knowledgeable about economics, he partially struggles in the teaching aspect of things. It may be hard to understand him, so sit close. You are graded on 3 tests, a couple of problem sets, and the final. It was a challenging course, but if you try hard enough; an A is achievable.
Prof VB is very sharp and has accumulated lots of wealth using economics. I liked that he makes hard theory & graphs clear and practical with his own examples. This brings a hard subject to life. You can tell he cares about his students because he created an organized course using his own chapter outlines & homework to study. VB is one of a kind.
I took him fall 2019 semester and was worried that I wouldnt do good but I studied for every test and sat right up front, payed attention to his lectures and used his note guides(which are a huge help) thank you VanBoven for pushing me to do my absolute best! If you are lazy, this class is not for you.
Very nice guy, I recommend you guys to get to know him, his notes are very helpful for the problem sets. If you have any questions in class, he willing to answer them, try not to get on his bad side (which is rarely). Sometimes I could barely understand what he was teaching, and most students were distracted using their phones.
I hated taking this class. Professor VB is an interesting guy, and his lectures are pretty fun to listen to, but the only thing I learned in this class was how to use common sense for educated guesses. I needed to take this course so I'm not too bothered, but this wasn't a good class for me.
Van Boven is one of the best and most caring profs I've had. Not only did he make the course interesting but also practical, the way he explains economics will help you make lots of money. 4 tests, 8 problem sets, and little extra credit. Use the chapter outlines he writes. Read the material before he covers it. Visit his office for help, nice guy.
Tends to be hard to understand when lecturing. Write down anything he writes on the board. Use the outlines to study!! Do the discussion questions he posts and the SAD questions at the end of each chapter outline. Homework wasn't difficult, usually all in the outlines. Very nice guy, is available for office hours, phone calls, and emails.
Very knowledgeable guy! Really nice. Always ask questions if you have any he is happy to clear anything up. Can be hard to understand but has very good notes.
Van Boven is an experienced prof. He is very knowledgeable & effective at drawing you into the course. He knows how to connect a challenging subject to real world issues that you can relate to. You must use the course package that he wrote & is available on Canvas. Study, do all problem sets. He really cares about you. I'm in his micro course now!!
He is the best professor at FSW. I took him for microeconomics and macroeconomics. He is a great professor who cares a lot and works hard. If you fill out his notes in class, study, and do the discussion questions he gives, you will pass the tests.
He is an amazing professor, take his class!
Difficult to understand. Test questions are based off of the outlines, sad questions, and discussion questions
Great Professor! Cares a lot about his students and spends hours working to help students!
I enjoyed learning from professor Van Boven. He is one of the best professors I've had at FSW. He spends hours of his personal time working on helping the students learn. Also when you email professor Van Boven, he gets back to you as soon as possible. He is extremely knowledgeable on the subject of economics.
Van Boven is the BEST professor that I have had during my time at FSW. He is phenomenal, especially if you actually want to acquire knowledge that is useful and that you can use in the future! He 100% sets his students up for success and genuinely wants to see you do well! His notes, SAD/discussion questions are great and will help get you an A!
The semester started off good. He does have a speech impairment so if you are hard of hearing then it won't be an easy class. His in person lectures are good, his notes are a bit messy and you have to read the textbook to really understand them. Corona made it all self taught with little instruction and not really working with any scheduling issues
Van Boven explains complex theory & how macro affects the stock market. If you apply economics over time he shows you how to become a multimillionaire. I'm looking forward to his micro. He was an entrepreneur who will show you how to use micro to achieve success in business. Tough courses & lots of study required but VB makes it worthwhile & fun!
Van Boven is one of the most knowledgeable and inspirational person I have ever met. He is dedicated to inspiring you to understand economics so you can improve the quality of your life. Caution, in his courses you must work and study hard. But this attitude will lead to future success. If you have a problem he will go out of his way to help.
This course is the most exciting I've ever taken. Van Boven knows how to make a hard subject interesting. If something goes over your head ask a question or stop by his office. He will always help you. I found the course to be very worthwhile. Study and do all the problem sets. Van Boven has achieved success and lives for his students.
Economics is already a complicated subject but Van Boven should be your first choice for registration. His office hours are flexible and he responds quickly. I took him online and visited some of his lectures - I recommend taking it on campus if you can, but either way, but as long as you study and look at his outlines, you will be just fine.
no EC. no feedback. doesn't help online. you'll die. i'm a straight A student and getting a C was one of the hardest days of my life. he may be a good guy if u got a face to face class but for online? DO NOT TAKE. I begged for EC and he still didn't giv. If you want to pass take someone else online. 20% each for 4 tests and 20% for quizes. THATS IT
Van Boven cares and is geared for success. Great prof who knows how to make difficult theory easier to grasp and fun by applying everything to his memorable real life examples. He has all the theory outlined on Canvas. Study it! Do all the problem sets to get the 100 points (equals a test grade)! Using economics made him rich. Very approachable!
At first the lectures might seem somewhat unorthodox, but as you get used to it, you'll see how effective and engaging they result. This is no typicall econ class, and it is no simple, easy to pass class eather. But once you understand the methodology and teachin style, you'll have a blast and learn a ton. One of the best classes I've taken.
I was forced to take my first online class. I was lucky to get Van Boven. He has very high standards but is totally devoted to helping his students learn and apply economics. He writes outlines and practice test questions for every chapter and posts them on Canvas. Do ALL the homework to bring your grade up. You can phone him at home any evening.
Great Professor. His notes hold all the answers. Draw the graphs and pay attention. Hard to understand but that's why his notes are crucial. Flash cards/quizlet helps
Van Boven is a upbeat & caring prof. Loved his unique personality. You MUST study his outlines & complete all the problem sets to EARN a high grade. I didn't miss a class. He kept my attention by applying hard economic theories to understanding the quirks in market and business cycle issues so I could live a better work life & start to get rich.
Although micro was hard Van Boven's successful entrepreneurship in business and financial investing made the course worthwhile. He applies all the theory to something you can relate to. The well organized outlines that he writes and posts on Canvas shows that he cares if you learn and do well. Study, do all the problem sets, and ask questions.
He's not a bad professor. What I disliked, and will point out in the end of the semester survey is the constant stories about students not satisfied with their grade. He also will put false answers from the problem set as options on the multiple choice test. Read the book. Khan academy macro AP, covers every topic he discusses. You're welcome.
Professor Van Boven is a great professor, he is very knowledgeable and brings real life examples instead of just theories. He gives out notes that you fill in and SAD questions, if you do both of them, you will do very well! I recommend him, I took him for Micro and Macro.
This professor is horrible. His lectures are hard to follow, he rambles off the subject, he is inappropriate with his discussions, and worst of all SO UNORGANIZED! He never gives you assignments in advance, he assigns tests and homework the class before so if you miss a class, you wont know when a TEST or HW is assigned. No time to study or prepare
If you take this class, you'll end up teaching yourself. He rambles on about unrelated things that have nothing to with the course for half of each lecture. He mumbles and talks quietly, so if you aren't sitting in the front row, you won't be able to hear a thing he says. I do not recommend.
One the best profs I have had at FSW. The outlines that he writes for each chapter are awesome. He woks hard to help you do well in the course. What I liked is that he backed up the theory with real-life experiences and stories. This made economics more understandable and showed me how to apply it to make money. But you must study to pass!
Micro is very challenging but Van Boven goes out of his way to help you. Just ask. Bring the chapter outlines that he writes to every class and study his practice questions each week. He is a knowledgeable & cool prof who applies theory to interesting examples. This made the class exciting and at times hilarious. Hard course, but worth the effort!
Van Boven is all about working to achieve success. You MUST read the material before each class otherwise you will be lost. After each class review again his chapter outlines & practice questions. I liked the way he connected national news & his business experiences to the complex theory. Nice and intelligent guy who will always help you do better.
Please DO NOT take him online! He only opens quizzes and tests on certain days then keeps the answers locked till days afterwards. You can't go back and change your answers after you move on to the next question either. His outlines are helpful sometimes but I relied more on a tutor to understand what he's truly asking in questions. NOT RECOMMENDED
This is my second semester taking Van Boven. He is one to always be there for students and is very helpful. He gives you solid advice and other information to help make you successful in life. Use his chapter outlines he provides to do well in the course. Using those outlines should give you an A in the class.
TERRIBLE im a straight A student and never struggled so much for a class. Was going through personal things and didnt allow extra credit, told me if i need help to retake the class in summer to relearn, notes are messy, cant understand what hes saying half the time, rambles off topic, had to ask him to input grades & due dates were unknown.
You have to show up to class, there will be a grade that is put in for it. He goes on a LOT of tangents that are hard to follow. He really tries his best to get the material across. Don't buy the textbook, he makes his own (these are also what the test is based off of) S.A.D questions help you, not hurt you, SO DO THEM!!! Really difficult class!!!
You cant even hear what he is saying. Gives homework assignments for chapters he hasnt gone over, so it is impossible to try and complete them. Doesnt use canvas, so easy to forget a test or homework date. If you ask for help on a test he will help you get to the right answer. Hard class, but READ THE TEXTBOOK and you will pass. Nice guy though.
I am usually an A or B student; however, this professor made me get my first C. Not only is he somewhat impossible to understand he also berates his students for not understanding what he is teaching.
super nice professor who has a lot of knowledge to share if you want to learn. he only has 4 assignments in the grade book so you must do really well on the homework and the exams in order to pass the class. No textbook needed because he makes online notes that you print which is exactly what's on the exam. just read the notes and pay attention
If you're gonna take this class you need the textbook He claims his notes are the bomb but they are NOT all that His class is pretty easy but he only gives you problem sets which are basically homework and that's it just tests and problem sets has some inappropriate comments and is also very hard to hear/understand sometimes very stressful imo
Van Boven is awesome. His teaching methods, knowledge of economics, and respect for all students is second to none. During a tough portion of the course see him in his office. He has a way of helping you understand the material. He is very wealthy and desires to help you use economics to achieve wealth. Sit near the front of the classroom.
He is pretty old and hard to understand, so get a seat up front. The only things graded are tests and homeworks, and the homework is super easy as long as you have the notes. The class is an easy A or B as long as you READ HIS NOTES and study. Hes a good teacher though and cares.
While you do not have to show up to lectures they are very important and will give you the most information. However, they are so boring and seem to drag on while he rambles and he seems to speak in metaphors. Assignments are easy but tests can be brutal. If you enjoy econ, you might like him but do not take him if you do not.
He tries his best to make the class sound fun but its just so uninteresting. His lectures are extremely long and he tends to go off-topic into unrelated class things, and if you're not seating in the front row, you will be barely able to hear his lectures. His tests are extremely long and difficult, and he doesn't give any study guides.
He is a decent professor. The key to his classes is doing the homework, studying the terms, and the extra notes/questions at the end of each chapter. He tends to go on tangents during the lectures, and it tends to drag the class so I would have trouble paying attention. But, getting an A is definitely feasible in both macro & micro. No textbook too
The theory was very challenging. You must have a copy of his chapter outlines in front of you during each class. But what was outstanding was his ability to apply the theory to actually running a business, investing in the stock market, real estate, etc. He owned a business in New York state and built up an investment fortune over the decades.
If you really want to understand and enjoy economics take Van Boven. He goes out of his way to post on Canvas all you need to pass the course. You must study lots of hours because he lectures at an upper level. But he is always willing to help you. He pushes a positive can do attitude to apply economics to get a top career and make lots of money.
You have 4 tests (including final) each worth 20% of your grade. The 5th category is for problem sets (also worth 20%). Study, you won't pass if you don't. He makes tests and outlines. Print notes (he may give EC). He talks at a very high level, so hard to keep up but gives real-life examples. He wants you to pass, so if you are having trouble, ask
A good teacher goes on funny tangents constantly. Lectures are good but make sure you're awake for his class if not you will fall asleep. Study before tests. Review his chapter summaries but mainly the S.A.D questions and you will pass his class. Only 5 tests. His homework is manageable. I recommend his course.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! Disrespectful to students cursed them out for simple questions and was constantly talking about prostitutes and seeing women in bikinis and naked. Spent most of the class talking about nonsense and tests were impossible. I had to withdraw as I had a 60% (ruin GPA). Finished the year with a 4.0 after withdrawing. Horrible!!
Amazing Professor. He made the class enjoyable and was hilarious. Don't cram for tests because they cover everything. Take notes on his outlines. Spend time on the problem sets, SAD questions, and the 5 test questions he gives in advance. He gives you everything you need to succeed and if you have questions go to his office hours.
Professor Van Boven is an outstanding professor who has succeeded in life and now wants to teach the young folk how to become as successful as him. He teaches economics and gives us life and financial tips on how to be successful like him. He will gladly help you out if you go during office hours.
Van Boven is an okay professor. I will certainly not ever retake him. I did study for tests, and I barely passed the tests with Cs. He decided to make attendance optional due to students getting bored with his lectures and fooling around. He tends to do his lectures and then get off topic very easily and starts to ramble about his old days.
There are only 5 total grades for the semester, 4 tests and 1 homework grade. His lectures are boring and if you really know nothing about economics don't take him for this class. He won't really go over it again and you're kind of on your own. He's a good guy, his notes are good, passing isn't hard if you go over his notes, not lecture notes.
You have to print many papers for this class, he mumbles a lot and it is really difficult to understand what he's saying 80% of the time. Goes off topic often and that confuses a lot because the things he talked about were not connected with the lesson, makes really bad jokes and tries really hard to connect with students by talking abt his past.
He is a nice guy, but it was really hard to understand him because of his accent, dry mouth, ADHD and low-volume voice. Most of the time he'd ramble on about random stuff and stories during lectures while most of us were trying to figure out what the lecture was even on. A lot of people in that class failed, including myself with extra credit.
Just heard about his passing. RIP Dr Van Boven
Heard about his passing a bit ago. By far the most influential professor i've ever had. Decided to major in Econ from his class. Graduate next semester. Fly high Professor Van Boven.
Van Boven is a quirky professor, but if you put in the work, you can succeed. The tests cover everything, so take good notes and use resources like unstuckstudy ai for practice. Participation is key - go to office hours if you need help.
