Great guy. Always there to help and very interesting. His way of thinking is pretty cool. If you do the readings you will be fine in thiis class.PEACE
Strange very opinionated man. Class isn't overly difficult, but he can be irritating. Once moved a desk and stacked chairs on it just to fix a clock that was a few minutes off.
I was very excited about taking this class when I started and I found the subject matter very interesting. However, the man is not a very fair grader and many of his assignments unclear for which he docks you when you don't say what he wants...
Strange man

Harold is the best teacher I have ever had. He is one of the most intelligent and unique people I have ever come across. His classes influenced me greatly and changed the way I thought about life. I feel bad for anyone that can't appreciate him.
I took two classes with this prof. He is awesome. Expands your mind. The other students maybe didn't like him cause he encourages thinking outside the box. Come on--it's philosophy.
I had him for intro to philosophy. He is awesome. He defintitely taught me to think differently about things, I think he should be appreciated, although my first initial impression was "he's strange!"
Great professor. Makes you think like you never thought you can. Pretty tough class if you don't keep up tho. Got a B.
He is a very one sided person, He will make you think which is good but on the same hand, He has a one sided opinion on things, Oh yea and he loves Goerge Bush!

I enjoyed his class at first, then as time went on his personality became very apparent. He is a very opinionated man, which is ok but he lets you know his opinions frequently. His questions are biased and tend to lead your answers towards his beliefs. He
What an egoist! If you didn't agree with his philosophy, you were done for. I took it thinking it would help me become more open-minded to things, little did I know how much it would turn me off to philosophy!
Very odd guy as it would seem, but he is intelligent. His problem is while he slams the media for being manipulative, he himself has been manipulated by it. He is very leftist and does not like many conservative points(my class was filled with wonderful arguments constantly) If you like to argue then take his class and interupt hi to debate all the time! He actually rewards proper questioning. In the end the clas helped me recognize a lot, but Weiss himself should open his mind a bit too.
he's the kind of prof that when you have him you cant wait to get out of his class, but in the end you're glad you had him. i couldn't stand the class and then when i got out i realized how much i learned from him. definitely one of the best professors i've had. he's tough, but a great professor
I loved the class and the teacher. He is strong minded, yes, but hey, he's a Philosophy teacher! He is very intelligent, witty and wise. Arrogant, sure, but who says that's a bad trait. He knows his stuff and he knows how to get the students involved. He was my favorite teacher so far. I miss the class actually....not the essays though! I got an A.
an expert in his field? yes, but he has to realize that we all have our opinions and it gets to the point where you yourself feel insulted by it because if you think about it, if he is knocking the republicans and bush calling them all kinds of names, he is essentially making fun of you as well and that is not why we signed up Please consider that
Harold Weiss is for serious students.I loved the class. His dedication and high standards challenged me to go beyond the requirements.Although passionate about his positions,he always encouraged free thinking and evaluated each argument with an open mind. My scholastic experience has been enriched by this class.Again, for the serious students only!
I was really excited about this class before I took it. The teacher himself isn't so bad, and he's mildly interesting. I didn't like his approach to the material and it seemed all he was doing was repeating himself after the first day of a new religion.
If a student is interested in taking a class to sleep or sit idle, this is not the professor for you! He requires students to be actively engaged. He will go to just about any means necessary to wake you up and peak your interest. I have taken many classes with him and am sorry to say, there aren't any more for me to enjoy.
DO NOT MISS CLASS!! he's a stickler, extremely opinionated and intimidating. You MUST participate in class and give feedback and he'll love you. Not particularly hard, just anal about a lot. Read the chapters and come prepared to class ready to talk about the topics you read about.
He is very enthusiastic and demanding.
I have been told that every student discovers his or her life-changing professor, and this man was mine. He was challenging, intimidating, and demanding. But if you're a serious student and love to analyze material this will be absolute heaven! Everytime I see him in the hallway I can't help but smile and know he changed my life. Amazing Prof.!
While he has own opinions, under no circumstance is he arguing you have to believe them. If you don't like his PoV, argue with him about it, he'll love it.
If you use your head and think in his class, you will pass with an A. He is opinionated and does tend to bash bush or republicans but you have to understand that this is a PHILOSOPHY course. All opinions are welcome and anything goes, no one's right or wrong. That means differences of opinions and debates. He will encourage this.
Youre able to have an opinion in his class, but last semester I felt that he was really giving me the cold shoulder. he was treating me differently from other students because, he did not agree with my beliefs. he is a smart man but I just don't find him interesting. He sometimes walks around yelling tring 2 prove a point, i mean come on, kinda lame
only a couple things 1,dont miss class!!! hey prof why are you always so hardcore, seriously chillout!
To the guy above, maybe it's because "Operation Iraqi Freedom" AKA Operation: Subverting The Constitution was all **** and lies. And in regards to you not being able to voice your opinion- maybe it's because your opinion/argument was just****ty and illogical. Fact is with Weiss, he will listen but know your**** before you open your mouth.
To the guy below, maybe it's because "Operation: Iraqi Freedom" AKA Operation: Subverting The Constitution was all BS and lies. And not being able to voice your opinion? Wrong, he loves that. What happened was your opinion/argument was most likely illogical and wrong. Fact is, with him you must know your stuff before you open your mouth.
You know he's afraid to read these comments because students are so harsh in their opinions. Harlod Weiss is a smart man. I think some people just do not like him because he has opinions and he's not afraid to voice them. He tends to play devils advocate so there is never a truly correct answer... but hey, it is Philosophy. Open your mind.
Good, interesting professor. Does not always go by the textbook or stay on track, but this is philosophy. Participation is not optional here. He likes you to share your thoughts. I said he wasn't easy only because due to the material and readings, this is NOT a class you will skate through. Do your work, and make your papers interesting.
He definitely keeps you interested in the topics and requires participation. The text is used for all essays and reading is mandatory. I did sense favoritism towards the younger students over the adult students...maybe because the adults have already tranformed into their own person. Oh yeah...and he does like short skirts and cleavage because h
Mr. Weiss is a good teacher. His class was very interesting!
Mr. Weiss is a wonderful teacher. His class is very interesting and his view points has opened my eyes to different possibilities.
Great Proffessor. Very interesting discussions. He may come off as intimidating but he's so nice and willing to help any student succeed. JUST NO CELL PHONES.
Might be kinda weird, at timez, meditating on the last day of school. Keep your cell phones in your pockets or handbags, etc. Seems like a loner,he seemed a little interested in the this one lady in my class. Couldn't blame him tho if he was , she was hot :). Overall good professor, dont be afriad to state your piece .Participation is a grade 2.
Mr. Weiss is a very good professor ,very funny and entertaining man he keeps you interested in the class not boring at all! I look forward to his classes! If your a person who is closed minded dnt take this class its going to upset you!
Dr. Weiss is awesome. He is hilarious and makes learning the material interesting. He promotes class discussion as well. Tests were open notes. Never got a 100, but always got an A. Only had tests and participation as part of grade. To participate, just raise your hand a few times. I recommend him to all. He rocks.
Do the work, but more importantly, show up for class and consult with him on your papers. You have to meet with him to get an A. His written instructios were NOT what he required; it was very contridictory, so make sure you stop in his office before handing in work. You have to tell him what he wants to hear, and he will let you know what that is.
I LOVED Harold's classes. I took intro to philosophy, world religions, death and dying, and ethics and moral problems. His classes have changed my life and my way of thinking. After I took classes with him was when I truly began to discover who I am. Show up to class. Show comprehension of material and participate for a good grade!
Great professor
He's a smart man, but exceedingly pretentious. Don't miss class, and if you contradict him, he gets kind of snotty.
I took 4 classes with him. EASY! I got 3 A's and one B Make sure your papers quote the text(he likes to know that you COMPREHEND the reading). Also, make sure you show up for class. As long as you show up to class, read, write papers that show COMPREHENSION, and take notes for the OPEN BOOK/OPEN NOTE tests-you'll get an A! A lot can be learned!
After the first two weeks of class, I really considered dropping it. It was a night class and I was hoping for something more exciting. But I'm so glad I stuck with it. We had a lot of intense discussions and he was always very understanding and helpful. Some of the material is pretty dry but he makes it fun with his sarcastic sense of humor.
One of the greatest professors I ever had. I once told him he profoundly changed me life. I went on from NCC to finish grad school with a econ degree and his classes influenced my ideology throughout my time in school and in life. If you don't understand him you lack critical thought and critical thought is what he really teaches.
Doctor Weiss is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter being discussed. He brings up funny facts/jokes and knows how to create interesting debates. But know that hes been teaching at NCC for 26 years, so he is not a pushover. Students are expected to come to class prepared with the reading material or he kicks you out.
His lectures are always so interesting and he really is passionate about what he is teaching. Open book final and a few papers and you're good. You must have your papers reviewed by him or a tutor in order to get anything higher than a B on them though.
Study of Death & Dying, WI. Has very fluid lectures and involves students. Sometimes gets off track but overall easy to pay attention. Paper criteria are sometimes not clear, but still easy to pass. No tests, but 3 papers. He will automatically withdraw you after 3 absences. Reading every class, but mostly easy to read/ understand & fully discussed
Very interesting and amusing professor. Very easy grader; practically impossible to get below a B as long as you turn everything in. He has such extreme opinions though and he's not shy about them. He inserts his personal opinion into all his lectures, and although he says he respects everybody's opinion it's very hard to disagree with him.
Utterly amazing and knowledgable professor. His lectures answer so many questions you have and inspires you to think about the world differently. WARNING: His class will change your outlook on the world---for the better.
Dr. Weiss teaches an unforgettable Ethics class. If this class is required for your major, great! If not, take it anyway. It's a life changing course and the lectures are amazing.
He's a fantastic and knowledgeable teacher. I learned more in that little 3 hr philosophy class than most of my major classes and came out a more cultured and better-rounded person. 10/10 recommend taking. But be warned you have to walk into his class ready to think and participate you will NOT pass if you walk in there and put your head down.
I had Professor Weiss for World Religions. Overall he was a solid teacher. The one heads up is that he is really big on coming to class 100% prepared with worksheets and reading. He is a nice guy, makes a lot of jokes, but he can be extremely controversial (So if you're a sensitive person, do not take the course.) He keeps the students engaged.
He always made class interesting, there was never a dull moment. You need to show up and participate. It's very easy to participate because he's outgoing and the topics are interesting and makes you think. You'll get a great grade just by saying your opinion on most things. He tends to say his opinions too much though and can easily offend someone.
Lectures are very interesting and engaging. Participation is very important it shows your knowledge about the assign readings. Two test and a few papers are required, make sure you summit paper drafts a week before for suggestions. This was a great course!
I took him this Fall 2017 my only issue is he doesn't use blackboard so your grade is unknown until you ask, 2 papers 1 midterm 1 final and you dont need the book. He takes attendance makes you think this was a class I actually thought about once I walked out of class, good teacher wish he gave out more extra credit.
Harold is certainly on the eccentric side of teachers (if you would be offended by him bashing Trump, I would avoid the class haha!) And while he is an amazing man and the class is fairly easy, I honestly didn't learn much from the class because his lectures were off topic 90% of the time, but it's a fairly easy class!
One of the greatest professor I have had. He really ready to help. I recommend taking completely advantage of office hour. He will help with the set of any paper you do. He very smart and just get ready to read
Great teacher. I had a writing intensive so we were only graded on 4 papers. Awesome class, would take a class again from him. Highly recommend
He is extremely helpful when you write your paper. He is a very humanistic and cares about his students success. He doesnt play favorites. He is very knowledgeable about the subjects. He is what a college professor should be and will help you transfer if need be.
Professor Weiss is an amazing person. Extremely helpful with feedback for your papers after submitting a draft to him. His courses are very interactive, participation is extremely important, and attendance too. Being ready for class by reading the material assigned ahead of time makes everything much easier.
Absolute gem of a dude. Funny as hell and was never bored in our class discussions and his lectures.
Professor Weiss is amazing. I love his teaching style and how he grades papers. He gives good feedback on everything. You need to participate. He has an interesting exterior, but he really does care about students. If you put forth the effort, he gives it back.
I loved his class. He was a very easy going and understanding professor. One the the best that I have had. I would 100% take his class again. The only thing is you have to print out all of the readings, so make sure that you have access to a printer, but you don't need to buy any books so that is a plus!!!
TO MUCH POLITICAL TALK AND ALSO OFF TOPIC! I DID NOT A SINGLE THING IN THIS CLASS, ITS A WASTE OF TIME AND FUNDS. HAD TO DROP THE CLASS B/C PROFESSOR WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE. IT DEFINITELY SHOWS SCHOOL IS HIS SOCIAL LIFE AND GOD FOR BID YOU HAVE AN OPINION. NURSING IS MY MAJOR AND I DO NOT SEE THE RELATION OF TAKING THIS CLASS!
Terrible terrible terrible professor. He yells all class about stuff that makes no sense. Super rude. Makes people feel bad for their opinions. Trust me you will not get along with this professor. Extremely rude when replying to emails and makes you feel bad for asking questions. Do not take this professor. Not funny. Not nice. Not intelligent.
He provided good feedback on the papers and some leniency for those who submitted their papers late. Engagement with the readings is needed to do well and understand the material. While the final exam was a bit difficult, more than enough time was provided and it was open notes. There is a participation grade.
The actual work wasnt difficult. But dealing with this prof was the hardest thing. If I could give the professor a -10 i would. Im not sure why he has such good reviews because hes the worst, rudest prof ive ever had. If you ask for help he will talk down on you and call you stupid. I wish I could post the screen shots of the emails he sent me.
Class was only graded on participation and three essays. There are a lot of reading material for each class. However, if you do the work and feel comfortable participating you should be okay. Essays take time, but there are only three and he grades pretty fairly. Very opinionated during lectures.
Loved him as a professor, so much that I took Death & Dying to have him again. (not required for my major) He IS very politically opinionated & vocal; may rub people wrong. Very writing intensive. Will be given articles to read ahead of class. Read, underline, prepare, participate. (I took him in Fall 2020 for PHIL202G and Spring 2021 for PHIL111G)
Professor Weiss is a pretty fair professor and I enjoyed his classes for the most part. He likes to engage with the class and you are rewarded for participation. At times he can be a little rude or dismissive, but nothing crazy. Do the rough drafts and take his advice. Put effort into the essays and participate in class+ extra credit=fairly easy A.
I have not even been in this class for a week yet and I already know this guy is gonna be the biggest pain in my neck. I emailed him to ask him if i missed anything and to introduce myself to become familiar, and he was immediately rude and disrespectful. has no regard for anyone else, Not helpful at all. It's amazing this guy still has a job.
Weiss is literally one of the best professors I have had in my entire college experience. Yes, you'll have to read and you'll have to participate. But, Weiss is seriously a one of a kind professor. If you show that you care about his class and are willing to open your mind in his classroom, you will do great. He provides amazing opportunities.
I suggest you take someone else. always goes over the class time. do not take.
Weiss is certainly different from others. - He's not afraid to share his opinions. Non-religious, and left leaning in terms of politics. Bad reviews are probably the right wing nuts. - Dislikes tech. Emails are subpar. - Participation is a must. Print EVERY READING!! He doesn't like the use of PC's in class. Overall? Interesting guy. Not bad though
This is one of the best philosophy professors I have ever had. He makes sure that all the topics you cover in class are relavent. If you want to pass this class just read and print the assigned readings and HIGHLIGHT. All his assignments are extremely easy and are covered in class. Go to class and read the assigned readings and you'll be golden.
He wasn't very tech savy which wasn't a huge issue, but the course work was not laid out well at all. He would reference readings and lectures for discussion boards but they we're in the documents he gave for the week. For a religion course, I feel like I didn't learn anything and I was really excited for this class.
Classes are discussion-based, he can go off-topic sometimes but he makes class super fun and interesting. He asks for everyone's opinions. Often brings snacks to class for us to share. Overall funny guy with a good attitude, I'd totally take him again
Would absolutely recommend this professor to anyone! Prof Weiss wants all his students to succeed. Do the work and participate and you will do well in his class.
Prof Weiss's course on Ethics and Moral Problems was my favorite course this semester. I opted for the writing intensive course, but classes were focused mainly on discussions. From an introverted person, I found it easy to engage in discussions. He can get controversial, but that's expected from philosophy classes, opposing views are encouraged.
I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with Dr. Weiss, but he's just not for me. While the lectures were interesting, if not filled with political bias, I found him difficult to communicate with and was constantly confused by his seemingly arbitrary grading and scheduling decisions.
He was a great professor but wasn't for me. He was very vocal with his opinions that some would see as controversial (I didn't have much of a problem with it though.) If you don't like a controversial professor, then don't take him.
While the course content was easy (quizzes and discussions), they were often filled with the professors personal political views. If you don't oppose his views you will be fine, but try to agree with his points every now and then even if you don't necessarily think it's true. it'll help you long term.
Attend the class and do the discussion boards, (which theres abt one every 2-3 weeks), and you'll be fine, it's an easy A. Professor Weiss has strong opinions, but that's expected from an ethics class. He is open and encourages discussion and different thoughts into his lectures. You'll take away interesting ideas if you listen to what he's saying.
He is a very nice professor and class is easy. He lets the class decide how they want to be graded and makes lectures be enjoyable. He also encourages students to participate which can be hard if you not used to it I would recommend him 100%
