This professor is extremely nice and is overall a great guy.

He was a very nice man. Except for he made you read articles of newspapers and summarize them.
He maybe a nice guy for a normal class, but i advise you not to sign up for his distance learning via the internet, 8 week course. He expects alot out of his students, so much that i found it near impossible to make above a C and dropped to class after a few weeks inorder to keep my GPA up. If you do take his class, make sure and study for his test
I took his class in the afternoon and all I could ever think about was leaving to go home. He tests over some really weird information, but if you do all the group asignments and the extra credit it can be easy to still get a B or maybe an A without really studying. I would advise you to try and find someone else.

man, one thing i remember about Mr. Bell is that he smelled soooo good ( i could close my eyes and could tell when he came into the room!) other than that...i didnt like his point system and the test were a little tricky!
Expect a LOT of reading. His lectures are 2 hours on what ends up to be 3 questions on his test. He's kinda stubborn and his expertise is mostly in African American History, which I do not doubt he teaches well, but for US History he is lacking. He can also be a little aloof.
he is very helpful and will help you pass if you just need the grade with extracredit and all. but I took his online class and he was hard to reach at time always canceled our meeting without letting me know. all he wants you to do is read all chapters and take the test and somehow filter the information that you stored into a 30 question test.
Quite a bit of information to digest to wittle down to a 30 question test over each chapter.
really good professor..really nice and taught me alot..he talks a lot but you mainly just have to read the book..he also tried to offer a lot of bonus points..im glad i took his class
HE IS NOT GOOD PROFESSOR AT ALL TEACH LITTLE AND EXPECT MORE, UNSATISFACTORY GRADING SYSTEM,NO RESPONSE OF EMAIL, DOES NOT GIVE IMPORTANCE TO STUDENT'S CONCERN. HE EVEN DOES NOT KNOW THE ANSWER OF THE QUEATION WHAT HE IS ASKING, VERY UNCLEAR QUESTIONS, CONFLICTING ANSWER.I SUGGEST YOU NOT TO SPENT YOUR MONEY ON HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO GET GOOD GPA
not a good prof. at all
He is a very good professor. He gives a lot of Extra credit points on each test, possible of making 16 points extra on each test. Easy to make an A, I slacked off and made a B. You also get a somewhat helpful review before each test.
This class isn't a hard one, just 1) go to class 2) take notes 3) do the bonus work 4) study the group assignments and practice tests. Reading the book is a bonus, but he usually goes over the important stuff in class.
he seems like he would be really interesting in a higher level class, but for a basic history class at a community college, he does not go above and beyond. his tests are easy if you do the group work the day before. overall, better than most, not as good as some
Do Not Take His Class. My whole class was failing when I droped it hes a very bad teacher.
prof bell is very laid back had him for distant learning 8wks wants to help you if you help yourself and was always there at our scheduled appt for retest if needed. great prof! oh and does smell good!!!
He's the best! if you take him, you would loveeee history because he makes it very interesting. he test are pretty easy, but the mutile choice are pretty tricky. he offers alot of ways to ear nbnus points. take him and you won't be sorry you did....
Every negative comment previously written is true. I'm a Nursing Major and took this online class because I wanted to raise my GPA. Completely from the book, no additional reading recommendations. Responds to emails via Iphone with one word answers. I wrote a B paper, received a C with no explanation. Complete waste of time and money. BOOOO!!!!!
Great teacher. This negative comments are ridiculous. He's very helpful and the A is easy if you put forth a little effort. A lot of the test questions are from lectures, but they can be found in the book as well. He's really laidback and is open to opinion on subjects. Overall, great teacher. I would take him again.
Prof Bell is really chill and his lecture are quite enjoyable. Lots of people complain about a certain degree of difficulty. However, as with any class, the effort you put into this class will be directly reflected in your final grade. That being said, just read the book and take notes and this class should be an easy A.
Had him for online class and he did not do what he said he was going to do. Only heard from him on the first day and the drop date...maybe he's a better in class Prof...
I signed up for his online class and had to drop because he's terrible. Sent him an email asking to clarify instructions, received no response, so I followed up later, still no response. Not reachable. I would choose a prof not so "hands off"--by that I mean one who is willing to make an effort. TERRIBLE.
He never took any of my questions seriously; They questions were never answered and he even had he whole class laughing as he made fun of me. He embarrased me countless times and i recieved no help ,even after attending his class and showing interest. His lectures wre very good, but he does not beleive that NO QUESTION IS DUMB
I took Bell's online course and judging by his level of involvement it seems like he couldn't care less about teaching. ACC might as well pay students to teach themselves. I expect to get my money's worth when I pay my tuition, and this "professor" left me feeling ripped off.
He's a decent professor, go to class take notes and read /do unit reviews from book and you should be fine, don't whip out your cell in class though because he does make it a big deal. His grading scale on tests is usually out of 125 and yes he is a semi tough grader, don't get me wrong he gives you ample opportunity, this prof isn't for slackers.
I took the distance learning class and we had 5 unit reviews that we were told to use to study for the tests. The test were not straight forward from the reviews that we were told to use. I emailed the teacher several times and he did not offer any help, he just said he expects the student to read and comprehend the material.
He's an awesome teacher. Lectures are kinda more like story time, but the easiest way to understand what's going on is to read the chapters and just put in the effort. He gives plenty of "extra credit" opportunities however it's all part of the grade anyways. 5 Multiple choice tests and one book report/annotated bibliography.
He cares alot about his students passing and gives plenty of extra credit! As long as you take notes in class and read a little of the book you will have an easy A! His lectures are more interesting than most teachers.
Mr. Bell is excellent at giving lectures but his test are hard. Even when I read the chapters and studied the review, I felt like he added questions on there that we hadnt discussed.
Took online 8wk class. I have a 4.0 so far from taking 8wk DL classes, but I dropped this one because I was endangering that GPA. A vending machine could better teach this class. Discussion boards have no direction, study guides don't help much with the tests, and the Bell has 5 words or less to offer via email. I wouldn't take his online class.
I love this professor he was very straight forward, laid back, and he made leaning new things interesting an understandable. I highly recommend you take this class cuz if you do you WILL get an A
I like his class, but you definitely get out what you put in. I do the reading and am generally interested in the lectures, but I could see them getting boring although he does mix it up with videos to try to keep your attention. He's very jovial and pretty relaxed.
NEVER consider his online class. endless reading and absolutely no structure.
He is great professor. He gives out a lot of extra credit. His lecture is so interesting... I don't like history, but I enjoyed his class. And I remember a lot about Hist now. I want to take 1302 w him, but seem like he do not have one.
NEVER EVER consider taking his online class. He offers no help whatsoever, assigns huge amounts of textbook reading, and the class has no structure.
This professor is clearly the worst professor! Does not help whatsoever. If you email him a question about instructions he will answer with yes or no. The class has no structure. The instructions are not clear at all and he does not help.
Nice teacher, but definitely expects you to work for your grade. There's plenty of chances for extra credit and you shouldn't miss a single one. You must READ to do well in his class. His lectures are detailed, but you must know the book in and out to do well on his tests. If he shows something in class (ie:charts, videos) they will be the test.
Took his 1301 online class and man oh man, that was a lot of reading. It's the entire class, just reading the text book. There are study questions that you can answer but they're really not necessary to pass the tests, of which there are only five. I liked the self-paced structure of the class but just wish there was more to it than just reading
After continuing to get low grades on my things, Half way through the semester I came to him, the last 2 tests had EC on it, and for helping him do some stuff he gave me EC and I got a 100 for the last project. All in all, very good professor if you just pay attention, show up to class, listen and talk to him, he will help you succeed.
Does this teacher exist? I had to drop the online class. The pre-test, t/f,did nothing to help prepare for the actual graded test. I had emailed this teacher and never received a response. He never posted on blackboard and only time he ever responded was for the initial orientation and to drop the class. What a waste of time and money.
This is a fairly easy class, but I love any kind of History! However, It almost felt like I was in Black history with this teacher! He would literally tie in everything with black history! Study and you will Ace this class!
I got out of this class a few days after the official start because I could see what was coming. This professor is unresponsive to emails and for a DL course communication is a must. It'll require a lot of textbook dedication and time and there is no structure at all. A complete disappointment
The comments the other students made about wondering if he really exists...I concur. I have emailed him several times with no response at all, or got a one word response. I really enjoy history and feel that I am a pretty decent student. However, with the lack of structure and guidance you are basically teaching yourself with no help from him
This should have been an easy class, even with out it being really structured or receiving help from the instructor. The grading structure is nonsense and the tests are awful. The study guides are useless. He allows for retests, but the wording of the questions and answers is terrible. I'm not a bad or lazy student and I struggled to get through.
I read the assigned chapters, made numerous (100s!) flashcards to study, practically memorized the entire chapters and still struggled to do well on his tests. Test questions were worded in a confusing manner, and some questions were based on info from chapters not included in that unit. ZERO guidance, direction or feedback on Discussion boards.
He takes no pride in ensuring his online students a learning environment. I feel ripped off, I could have done this class on my own instead of paying for absolutely no guidance.
Wow! This guy is a piece of work. If you are reading this please fix those tests, they are horrible. If you talk to him he is very helpful, but like I said you have got to talk to him. It seems like he does not like computers and tries to avoid them as much as he can. If you take his tests be prepared to retest or pull your hair out.
Pay Attention and show up for classes. There were 5 extra credit opportunities that range between 10-15Pts/each. Read the book, and answer all study guide questions in book and what he gives you and you will pass the class.. From Bell: "The more time you spend with the information, the more you will know it!"
No structure to class; You basically read the text book and take 5 tests based on what you've read. Unlike other DIL classes, the tests are not taken via blackboard and there is no guideline or study guide.
Doesn't interact or talk to students at all. Practically every email (to a single person) is less than five words. He also changed the textbook, so I had to buy another one. My high rank for easiness is not a good thing; he gave us study guides, and they were the entire tests, just in different words.
Super helpful! My class was struggling to make it, and he OFFERED help. He modified assignments to help us study! His tests are critical thinking, but everything you need is in class or the textbook. He gives you what you need to pass. He's straight forward and easy going. He's all about respect and hard work. I'm taking him again next semester!
Hard class to focus with group assignments and other in class work, such as miss 10 questions out of 50 and you fail the assignment, plus no time to do them. Tests are very hard and only half of what he talks about is on the test, the rest is in the book. bonus points are offered but not enough. I would not take any of his classes.
He's very clear. He doesn't make friends with students but still does his job. He says exactly what he wants and is word-for-word on tests. You really have to read the text book and study the objectives. Gives 3 sets of extra credit per test. Tests are critical thinking. Requires some effort. Class isn't 100% needed, but you should still attend.
To start the tests are very tough, do your best, get the extra credit and all the points on the group assignments. Listen to his lectures as he puts some questions based on what he says, the rest is in the book.
AT FIRST I DID NOT LIKE THE CLASS AND WAS TELLING PEOPLE DO NOT TAKE HIM .. BUT NOW I AM TAKING HIM FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY .. SUCKER FOR PUNISHMENT I GUESS .. BUT I DID LEARN AND TO ME THAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART ...
He gives long lectures, makes the tests difficult as well as the group assignments. Most of the answers are from the book which is a total nightmare. Good luck.
Everyone loves to hate on him, but he's a great teacher. You are in college now, so he expects you to act like it. This is why he gets such a bad rep; people don't want to do the work & then blame him for them failing the class! He is very clear in his lectures and on his tests. He will help if you reach out. One of the best history profs I've had.
Tests were super hard, and covered extremely specific book information rather than large concepts. Study guides, quizzes, and flashcards provided with book are almost useless. The grading rubric is non-standard and nonsensical. Class discussions are mandatory but he left it to the students to post the topics. Worst online class I have taken at ACC.
Grading criteria is strange, but very clear. Do more, quality work you will be rewarded with a better grade. Tests are very easy if you simply look at the study guide the professor provides. I took 1301 with Bell and am now taking 1302 with Bell. You have to be a special kind of stupid to not get an A in this class.
Good professor. He makes the class as fun and dynamic as possible. You need to go to class to keep up. Gives many opportunities for extra credit. If you go to class and read the book you'll pass. He creates a "adult learning environment." He won't remind you to come to class or turn in assignments (there's few in the semester).
Good Professor. Gives a lot of extra credit through out the semester which really helps your grade. Tests are pretty tough just do to the way he words questions. Make sure you attend every class because the extra credit assignments could really be any day with out notice.
Read the book, answer the study guides, post on the discussion board, then go take the tests. I wish someone had just said that because it took way too long to figure it out myself. VERY limited communication; I surmise the online class teacher is not very computer literate. Email responses are curt & take a long time to get. Verify the deadlines.
Syllabus is a bit difficult to understand but he'll clarify it. Once you can understand the syllabus you'll realize exactly what he wants from you for the entire semester.
He did not make the assignments clear enough to understand, he did not know how to respect his students and wanted to use points as a way of grading instead of grading the assignments the way they normally are. I would not recommend this professor at this campus.
In this class, i had a group with three other students; and together, along with Professor Bells assistance, we were able to pass the class with little to no difficulty. As long as you know how to read a textbook (not the same thing as Harry Potter, I admit); you will pass this class.
He's very slow at responding to students via email. Just get an 80 average on all 5 tests, and write a research paper and you'll get an A. The study guide is 40 questions, and the tests are 30 multiple choice questions, most answers can be found on quizlet (but read the book too). Really straightforward in the syllabus.
Professor Bell is the kind of professor that will not hold your hand throughout the class. You must read the text book, finish & review the study guides, participate in the group activities, and study for exams in order to do well in the class. As long as you do your part & keep track of the deadlines you will get an A.
He is responsive in his emails for the most part but is not very helpful in the clarification of things for students who actually CARE. Real mediocre, I've never been out to his campus though
Some of the questions on several tests were wrong, but didn't want to be confronted about them. The class had the potential to be so interesting. Required discussion board posts but didn't give feedback on any. Very disappointing when I had so been looking forward to taking the class.
His tests are incredibly obscure and do not reflect the reading OR study guide. Absolutely upset by this man.
The work you put in is what'll determine your grade. Interesting lectures, test questions are very specific so make sure you study notes & read text book a lot. Has a sense of humor. Don't try to be on your phone & think he won't see you. He was defiantly worth taking!
This was one of my favorite classes this semester. History can be slow and boring, but professor Bell makes it fun and active. He always makes students laugh too!
Professor Bell will not babysit you, you are in college now. He is very clear on what you need to do to pass, just do it, and you will be fine. Read the syallbus. Learn how to read and retain information from a textbook. Review your notes, attend class, do the assignments, and you will pass with a good grade.
If you take this class online though there are only 5 test you are really crunched for time on them. He makes you pick what grade you would like at the beginning of the course, if you pick the A contract must complete all of the requirement of the other contracts as well as write a lengthy paper. My advice is read all of the contracts verycarefully
Awesome Professor with a great sense of humor. He is extremely caring and want his students to achieve their goal. Prepare yourself for a lot of reading the chapters are extremely long his teaching style is straight forward. This was a tough class, but I enjoyed the journey of History I hope to take more of Professor Bell classes. Would definitely
Weirdest class I've taken, by far. You have to pick a "grading contract" which makes absolutely no sense. Read the contracts extremely carefully and don't automatically pick the A contract, unless you have a lot of time on your hands. Isn't responsive and tests are pretty difficult. Would not take him again, for sure.
Very entertaining class. All the grades are tests and one very, very easy project. Theres three things that help you on the tests: Slides, book, and review. I dont recommend reading the book, just do the review, and show up to class. He gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit If you want to ace the class you have to do it. Easy points.
Looking to study African American history? You're better off reading the text book. The test questions are oddly specific, despite having broad review concepts. The teacher leaves hardly any input into the class and it isn't made clear how exactly the extra credit would add in if the class is based on a contract. Just read the text book.
The class is easy enough, in theory. Mr. Bell, unfortunately, does not do anything to teach the class and then is incredibly condescending and rude when asked any questions. I was registered for his 1302 class but have since dropped it due to his poor attitude. I do not recommend this professor.
I will not take a course from a Professor who does not give a chance for students to pass. Harris withdrawal me from his course when I made at least a grade C out of his three test that was due in a few weeks and after I had 6 comments on the discussing board. So why pay a professor when you can learn history on your own?
Mr. Bell is a really good teacher, when I say that I mean he knows his stuff & you learn a lot in his class. This class is not a cake walk and get ready to be challenged. He is very direct. What he says in the beginning of the class (first day) is absolutely true. Study the slides, book, do the review, read every chapter, and study, you will pass.
Prof Bell is amazing. Prepare to have your worldview blown out of your skull. Work hard, participate in class and DO THE HOMEWORK. All tests are directly from reading/ homework w/ extra credit from lectures. If you follow his instructions he hands you an A, practically guaranteed. Hard but worth the effort. Made history REAL.
The online course is very difficult due to the test
He's not very hands on and even though I read every chapter and gave in depth answers on my reviews the tests are filled with ridiculous "gotcha" answers. Every couple of questions will have 2 or 3 answers that basically worded the same but slightly different so it really impedes your chances to succeed and forces you into unnecessary extra work.
I dont know how to further explain.
I'm taking his online class. He puts absolutely no effort into the class. He only reminds you of due dates when you are half way into the semester. He asks you to read the chapters, comment, then test- not too complicated but I almost forgot that I had the class because he is so uninvolved. Would highly NOT recommend his online class.
Although the tests are multiple choice, you better make sure you know every detail of the question, or else you'll be having to play your hand. The most annoying questions were ones that asks "what is NOT a detail of ____" or ask for minor details of events or of characteristics of a person. Responds at any time. Be careful to read the syllabus.
This class is simple if you do a few things. Attend Class for lecture notes, Read the book chapters and do the chapter objectives outside of class. Professor Bell gives extra credit in group assignments such as cross words and multiple choice questions. To get an A all you have to do is attend class, read and study. Simple as that. No excuses.
Awesome Professor! If I had to take him again I wouldnt have any doubts Im my mind not to. I signed a C Contract and endured up with a B. Hands down best professor Ive ever had. Online class super easy.
PLEASE I am BEGGING you, do not take this class. This was one of my first college classes coming straight from high school. Online he is not available whatsoever and then judges you when you do need help. I took this class during COVID and we had no guidance at all. Tests and quizzes were NOTHING like the real tests!!
This is by far one of the worst courses I've ever seen. He makes you sign a grading contract which is flat out stupid. Allow students to recieve an A based on their total points. This class is about having students do the most work for a subject that is relatively easy. He doesn't care about teaching this is about control for him and it's sad.
Honestly, I worked so hard in this class just hated the grading system. There was no extra credit at all. I was aiming for an "A" wrote the essay but missed it by 5 points. History is supposed to be easy. I don't know why it was one of the hardest and most stressful class!
Took this class spring of 2021, all online. Professor Bell is an okay professor overall. The grading contract is kind of dumb, if you are planning on taking this class, I'd rec just going with a B or C for it. Mostly just grades based on tests and discussion posts. Got a B in the class, took as a side course since my other one was my major.
Grading contract is dumb, but if you're just doing it for credit just take a B or C contract. No interaction from the prof, but I kind of liked it like that. Video quizzes are unreasonably hard, but with the tests, you can go hackerCD on it. If you went full degenerate, this course would take 15 hours of total work with still getting a B.
I had Prof Bell in his asynchronous history class for dual credit. He's very easy to contact and responds to emails quickly and concisely. The class was entirely self paced and consisted of reading chapters, watching videos, and then taking an open-book test over each. His deadlines are VERY strict, if you miss them he will not adjust.
I took this prof's online USHist class, and at first it was fine, just a lot of reading. But on many of the tests he gives out there are typos and some just flat out have the wrong answer. I would not take this prof online again. On the plus side, he responds to emails very quickly. Edit: he responded quickly and fixed the issue, very appreciated.
I took professor Bells asynchronous USHIST1302 course over the summer. Overall the course is easy if you read the textbook (around 400 pages), watch the videos, and take good notes. He responds fairly quickly to emails but his responses are often dry and short. Overall the class is fairly easy and if you put in the work an easy A.
The grade contract is dumb and his readings are super super long. This class is really time consuming and requires a lot of work. 4 tests, 4 quizzes, 4 disscussion posts, and an essay if you want an A. Tests and quizzes are open notes but regardless is extremely hard. Tests are off the reading quizzes are off videos. I found this class really hard.
Signing the grade contract was pretty intimidating, but you must complete all coursework, including the documentary review and research paper, to get an A. Professor Bell was hands-off and relied on you to reach out. He gives deadline reminders & doesn't require many discussion boards. He gives a good amount of time to complete assignments.
Grade contract is absurd. The grade/work requirements are overly complex, and the A grade requires you to work with a professor who is effectively nonexistent. No lectures. No feedback.
This class is very difficult and for the professor to not let me retake an exam I was locked out of & not give extra credit is beyond crazy. We had to read over 200 pages of the textbook, take 4 exams (2 video & 2 regular exams) and 2 discussion boards in the first two weeks. This class on top of three other classes was impossible.
Grade contract alone makes him one of the worst professors I've ever had
Course was poorly structured, with both Unit 1 and Unit 2 exams due on the same day during the first week. When I reached out for assistance and requested the opportunity to make up the missed exams, I was met with a flat refusal. This professor overrode my earned grade of 96 on an assignment with a zero without any valid explanation. Do not take.
No exceptions on the grade contract, even for mental health reasons. I begged him to let me make up some assignments for partial credit. He "empathized with me" by giving me an F. If you're someone who needs any support whatsoever in education, do not take this course.
You sign a "grade contract" that highlights exactly what you need to achieve your grade. Exams and quizzes are all open-note. Discussion boards are not weighed heavily. A 2000-word research paper is required for an A. The difficult part of this course is that it is 7 weeks, so material is densely compact. In the modern age, this class is an easy A.
Just not a very good experience. I've taken several half-length courses, and this course sticks out--in a bad way. Explicity stated exceptions to deadlines aren't considered, so go with another professor or expect to meet tight deadlines. The cherry on top is that although they have strict guidelines, they don't even make their own material.
I wouldn't recommend this class if you struggle doing online work like I do. The strict deadlines made the class far more stressful than necessary, which sucks because I enjoy history a lot. I would only recommend this class if you're okay with a professor who has no tolerance for late work and a heavy workload that requires a lot of reading.
