He's SOOO funny. Extremly Republican but he's still awsome! Makes jokes at expense of other cultures but it fits in with his style of teaching. Knows his stuff well, and loves history. Recommended!
nice guy, you can only fail his class if you want to!
Great professor. Not PC, which is nice in a world where we pretend way too much. I wish he taught more that GOVT 133 and 344, as I would take his classes anytime. He always invites great speakers to the class too. Highly recommended.
Makes course interesting. Is helpful on a group level, however I got the impression that on the individual level it would be different. Has excellent guest speakers. Really knows his stuff. Exams are moderately difficult. Beware, NOT pc at all.
he was anwsome teacher. he is very helpful and listents to your problems and will help you to understand the info better
He is my favorite professor so far in college!! He is very funny and caring about his students. He likes discussing current events, so you are able to learn a lot about what is going on. Take him.... he's great!
One of the most enjoyable professors I've ever had. He was sarcastic, insulting, and wry...it was halarious! I would take Dinella again and again if I could. He is very understanding and extends deadlines. You need to know your stuff though.
If you want a sarcastic down to earth Manhattanite with a dry sense of humor and a total lack of political correctness, you should take Dinella. The guy is interesting, well connected, and has had an interesting life as an ex NATO liason to the Greek Pentagon. TAKE HIM! Even if he is conservative.
I'm a liberal, he's a conservative, but he was fair and respectful. He had a ton of interesting and funny stories and I actually learned quite a lot from this class. Just pay attention, you don't even have to read the books, and you'll get by with flying colors.
Great professor, taking him next semester. I would reccomend to whoever is interested in international politics.
I loved this class!!! Dinella keeps class interesting by sharing his life experiences and involving the class in discussions. He cares alot about his students and obviously enjoys teaching. He has a wicked sense of humor so those students who are easily offended should steer clear of his class.
The best Mason has to offer. Great Professor all around.
very nice, three hour lectures went by fast. understanding, easy to read guy. very easygoing, everything you want in a professor.
Take him or you're missing out.
Amazing professor and all around good man. I enjoyed the classes despite being a strong liberal in a conservative professor's class. He incorporates life experiences into his lectures and 3 hours seems like nothing. Not for the weak of heart or those without a sense of humor. NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT
Very easy and fairly entertaining. politcally incorrect and his TA is a little creepy.
Take this professor. Hysterical, wry, witty, so much fun to listen to. Typical NYC man. Ex Army. He knows his stuff inside and out, has a wicked helpful TA (go to the review sessions for midterm and final). Class attendance is a must, reading the book however, is not. Do not miss out -take him
Don't take him if you don't watch the news. He doesn't teach what's on the test. The reviews are not that great either :(
Easy is a relative term. His GREAT wit carried the class... no sleeping required! Dinella is extremely knowledgeable with much OJT experience to share. Lectures support reading material assigned. TAKE GOOD NOTES!!! A great class to take if you're in tune with current events and enjoy practicle application of the subject.
Fantastic professor with great stories! There are about three grades altogether though- the midterm, 6-8 page paper on a book you select, and the final. TA is also extremely helpful. Dinella incorporates the book material with current events, making the class even more interesting.
I took both his 100-level classes and thought they were great. This is not his forte though, and he is not interested... what a horrible disappointment - take this class with someone else - Professor Shogan is supposed to be awesome
Easy professor, just go to the review sessions and you will get an A. They go over the test during the review.
I am a senior, government major, and have taken classes with almost every professor in the department and Professor Dinella is hands down the most outstanding. He is incredibly intelligent, funny, and inspiring. I have one of the worst cases of ADHD in recorded history and I sincerely enjoy attending his class and listening to him speak.
Prof. Dinella brings a history background and over 20 years of military and foreign relations experience that makes this class very interesting, stimulating and thought provoking. You'll learn what is going on behind the scenes on almost any news headline of your choice. His class was fun!A must for Government, Global Affairs, IR, ICAR majors!!!!!!
Professor Dinella is by far the best teacher I ever had at GMU. He is challenging, has an acute sense of humor, has great stories to tell, but most of all he is well prepared, and keeps the audience engaged. I truly enjoy his classes and, usually, look forward to his take on current events. Do not miss the opportunity to take his classes.
I have taken Prof Dinella twice now. The highlight of his classes are the engaging lectures and class discussions. The witty humor peppered throghout his lectures, adds that little extra to an excellent class. I have enjoyed the classes I have taken with him, and will continue to take Dinella every chance I get. Highly Recommended.
Great attitude - he kept classes exciting with personal world stories - halfway through semester the stories get annoying and it becomes routine. The tests were surprisingly unrelated to his lectures since they were from a test bank. Take his course, you will get an A if you try at least a bit.
Prof. Dinella is one of the great profs. that GMU has to offer. He has a great background in int. politics and U.S. security affairs that he brings into his lectures. Go to all of his classes and take notes and you will pass the class easily. His tests are hard but if you have taken notes your good to go. He's got a great sense of humor take him!
This is the 3rd time Ive had Prof. Dinella. He has extensive IR experience through his work with the Greek pentagon. He was the only American to ever be invited to attend the Greek War College. His razor sharp wit is backed up by fact, and he's very understanding when life 'gets in the way.' He's great. Very highly recommended.
In all my years of college, I've had few classes as memorable as this. Prof. Dinella, is really a great, and understanding teacher of foreign policy. He's had the experience of serving and being part of that foreign policy. If you have an interest Gov. or are looking at changing your major. I highly his class.
he is just amazing. take him its worth the class time
Interesting class, very intelligent masters student assistant, and very engaging professor. I read newspapers now!
These classes were not at all "easy A's", especially the international intro. But he is a nice enough prof who is interesting to listen to - you will learn something new and exciting, if not from a textbook then from one of his random stories.
prof. Dinella is an awesome profesor!!! his life experience gives you a sense of the real world something that books alone cannot do. I highly recommend him!
By far the best teacher I've ever had in my whole life. His lectures are very engaging and plus his sense of humor is amazing. His experience and knowledge in foreign policy are vast and second to none. This is the only class that I ever looked forward to attending! No other professor at GMU comes even close to him, period.
THIS GUY WAS JUST AWESOME, GREAT CLASS, GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR, AND JOKES. PATRICK WOODY, THE TA HAS DONE AN AWESOME JOB, HE'S ONE OF THE SUPER SMART KID
Funny, easy-going guy, great teacher. Very engaging. Take him for any class you can before he leaves for good.
Here is a great professor. READ (don't just skim) all the material, it is very interesting material for the history buff esp. He tends to 'play dumb,' but, be sure, he is VERY intelligent-he knows it, and you should too. Puts a real personal touch back in college-level classes thats rare. He might be leaving for the Army so be sure to take him now!
Dinella is seriously awesome! His class actually interested me, made me aware of events in the world-which I didn't think I'd be that interested in but turned out to be after his class! Not only is he super smart and experienced, but HILARIOUS! I couldn't believe some of the things coming out of his mouth! TAKE HIM before he leaves!
Prof. Dinella is terrific! He is very intelligent, funny, and well read. You will learn a lot with him. He is a fountain of knowledge. Not only is Prof Dinella magnificent, but he is an extraordinary individual. Sgt Lopez
I loved professor Dinella. The class met at 7:20 but surprisingly i was wide awake throughout his lectures. His class was so interesting and informational that i loved going to the class. By far the best teacher i have ever had. I learned a lot from him and wouldn't have regretted even if i had gotton 'C'. He changed my learning style completely.
I had him for 132 also. AWESOME. TIPS: GO to class. it's interesting, & it is important for participation, and he tells you many of the midterm/final questions in class. (you might have to remind him he said it would be on there the class before the test). Most test Qs prob. come from class. TAKE HIM! He gives everyone a real interest in the world
Professor Dinella is witty, outspoken, fiercely conservative, and a fantastic professor. While he will let his personal beliefs show in class, he invites debate with the students and keeps the room lively. There is a reason people keep taking the classes he teaches.
genius, funny, entertaining.
This guy isn’t your typical Faux News "stay the course right off the cliff" Bush-Bot. Has a mind of his own, lets express your opinions, and won’t mock u. While other professors were talking about American Idol, he was holding awesome detailed discussions on news. Look forward to taking him again, and this is coming from a member of moveon.org!
show up...do the reading and you will do well. It helps if you pay some sort of attention to current events too. If you do not read the book, you will not do well. That simple. GREAT prof! GREAT sense of humor! I would take him again if I could.
Great professor & class. Classes were always interesting even though it was a 7.20-10pm class. He's opinionated, but likes to hear students voice their own opinions. Goes over m/t and final questions in class and the questions come from class, current events discussed and book! One book review paper, not difficult and he's an easy grader.
All government majors should try to take a class with Prof Dinella while they still have the chance. Nowhere is there a more funny, dynamic, experienced, and knowledgable Gov Prof at GMU than Dinella. Allows frank, respectful debate while acting as a gadfly to the usually liberal students. If you simply show up and stay awake you will get a B.
The guy is hilarious. I've never liked a conservative this much. You'll miss a lot of test questions if you don't come to class, but his experiences and his wit make you look forward to going. Strongly recommend.
Engrossing, dynamic, and blunt. You must attend every class if you want to get a good grade.

Funny - I was in the same class as the guy below - yet I don't remember Dinella once mocking anyone because he had different opinions. Plus he worked in the military, not state department. I wonder if the kid just sat in the back of the class seething. Go to every class and you'll do fine. He doesn't grade on bias and he accepts other opinions.
Teacher makes it clear what will be on the test so they are easy enough. We had to do a book report that wasn't graded harshly. I know nothing about gov't and I got a B.
He wasn't a very good professor.. he has picks of favorites he likes. He is totally one sided about everything and thinks he's being funny when he makes ignorant remarks about other cultures. His test questions are kind of ridiculous---make sure you write down everything he says because thats where most of his questions come from.
TAKE HIM!!! his exams are EASY, paper is EASY. he will keep your attention all class. he is very very understanding. He is hilarious and witty! He is by far one of my FAVORITE PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD!!!
This prof is a joke. If you have a dissenting opinion in class & make that opinion heard - good luck! Get ready to be ridiculed, cut-off mid-sentences etc. He's one sided, FoxNews, arrogant, Republican A**hole. He offsets his obvious lack of professionalism by making jokes afterwards, but shouldnt excuse his actions. Complained w/Deans office! SUX!
Great professor! One of the funniest people on the planet, too. His hilarious remarks will keep you interested through the entire class. He also knows when to get serious and is always willing to help after class. The tests aren't hard at all as long as you do the readings and study what he tells you. JUST WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS FOR NOTES!
I truly enjoyed taking Professor Dinella's class. His lectures were interesting and kept me awake even in a night class. I definitely recommend him and I plan on taking his course in the future. Pay attention in class - it will come up again.
If you're a Democrat and like to participate in classes, good luck with this guy! I understand he prides himself on not being politically correct, but in a classroom setting, a majority of the comments he makes are flat-out inappropriate and offensive. I got an A in his class, but I wish I had had a different professor for Govt 103.
Go to class, write down all the stuff he says (even the weird junk!) and read the book. I found it helpful to follow along in the text and highlight important parts. Tests are not simple, but you should do all right if you pay attention in class and read the assigned chapters. Very engaging, and graded the final paper loosely :) Great prof!
Great teacher, hilarious and you learn a lot. Go to class take notes and you'll be fine. Awesome teacher for those who are interested in the subject with a lot of experience in the military but still has a problem with authority which is rare. A little conservative but is open about it and respects everyone except communists.
Mr. Dinella, was a very nice gentleman. I entered late into his class, he assisted me very well. He has a tendancy to be biased. Not very professional, but still taught what he needed to teach. Still a good teacher! Just because you may disagree with him doesnt mean you will fail! Fair on grading. Very Fun. Makes you want to attend class.
Great teacher! Really knows his stuff and teaches it in a understandable manner. He actually lectures about topics students would care about instead of droning on and on about unapplicable ideas. Very funny, very professional; has a military background, great guy.
Extremely funny prof. Military background and all-around good guy. Knows his stuff and makes it relate-able to the average student. 11/10
ATTEND CLASS. His exams are based on what comes out of his mouth. There is some stuff from the book, but the majority is from him. TAKE notes or you will fail. paper is graded fairly.
This Professor was one of the best that I have had in a LONG time....He was funny, and knew his material, his lectures were not BORING and he kept your attention, he also did not have anything on the test that he did not discuss in class. Im takinghim again next semester!!!!!
ATTEND HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!! Professor Dinella is probably one of the best professors I've had at GMU. Though attendance isn't "mandatory" he'll tell you lots of exam questions during lectures. His tests aren't hard if you study AND come to class. It's a must!
EXCELLENT/FUN/INTERESTING
Really straightforeward class, tests are things from the book and notes. 3 tests and 1 book report, you'll need to read the book and go to every lecture, it's a good class
The most interesting, knowledgeable, and witty professor at GMU. Excellent lectures! Notes+reading book=an easy A!
Really great professor with an entertaining class and great communication skills. Really great with students. As people have said, he's very conservative but as a super-liberal socialist myself I didn't mind the conservative commentary at all. Will take again
Harry is a lot of fun and has extraordinary life experiences that alone are worth taking the class. The overly politically correct may wish to avoid him as he is quite blunt but I loved his class and think he is a great guy.
This class was one of my favorites. He basically elaborates on the text through his life experiences. If you attend class and take notes you are gold. There is always a ton of extra credit on final and midterm. He's funny and makes night classes good. I only would rate him bad to get into another one of his classes, which Im on a wait list for.
Dr. Dinella is one of the most amazing professors I have ever had. I took his American Presidency class in '09 and changed my major to Gov't because of him. My sister recommended his class to me but I recommend it to everyone. You always walk out of class feeling like you have learned something new! Best Professor at Mason!
He has really cool insight and A LOT of personal world experience. He is a good teacher, but just be aware that his tests are based on the (interesting) random tangents he goes off on. You have to attend EVERY CLASS to get a decent grade and read the book. There is not much structure in the class. JUST WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS.
One of my favorite professors so far at GMU. He is hilarious. His tests tend to be a bit difficult though so you're going to have to study for them. Attend every class and write down everything he tells you to because if you don't, you'll be screwed on the tests. The only downside to the class I took was that there wasn't much classroom discussion.
Dinella is AWESOME!! Great lectures that are very interesting. Cracks jokes in class and keeps students involved. Be sure you're in class, but I haven't opened the book yet and still got an A on the midterm - handouts from his lawyer friend are great. MUST TAKE!!
Dinella is so cool. He makes the class fun! It's the class that I always looked forward to attending. Loves to crack jokes, but at the same time, you learn a lot. Great professor.
Professor Dinella is awesome. His classes are academically stimulating and fun to go to. Yes his tests sometimes focus on random information he talks about in class, but he tells you that the first class. You have to show up for this class and take notes but if you do that he will help you get the grade you are looking for.
Take Him!!!! I took Prof. Dinella's class a year and a half ago and I still consider him the best professor at Mason. I looked forward to his class every week. You MUST attend and write everything he says. Study your notes. Don't sign up if you don't plan to attend class. Great professor, wish Mason had more professors like him.
By far the most interesting and informative professor at Mason. An absolutely great guy that is truly looking to help students learn the material and excel in the class. If you dont go to class, you will not do well. He will take attendance and make personnel references in class that will be on his exams. Mason needs more teachers like him!
Really funny and nice guy. You HAVE to go to class as he says things that are on the test. Attendence is also part of your grade. The tests are much harder than he lets on. You have to study very hard and read all of the chapters if you want to do well. There's also a 6 page paper (double spaced). Do all that and you should be fine.
He is amazing. So well informed, knows about every subject and country- his class is fantastic. I had a three hour class and it flew by and was fascinating. He enjoys when you participate. The class is a good amount of work. Just read, and listen in class (take REALLY good notes) and write a good paper and you will be fine. The tests are hard.
By far the best professor I've taken so far at Mason. Very conservative and not afraid to say offensive (and hilarious) things. Can't wait to take more classes with him!
This was definitely a tough class, and you MUST read the textbook if you want pass the tests AND write down basically everything he says in class. But I learned a heck of a lot in this class and he's a really funny guy, if you don't laugh you have absolutely no sense of humor. If your grade is borderline, he'll bump it up with your attendance.
SUCH A GREAT PROFESSOR. Probably one of Mason's best. Really knows his stuff. He doesn't take attendance, but the tests are based on his lectures. Keep up with him, sit in front. His lectures are very interesting.
I took the American presidency class. It was a good class and Dr. Dinella is an excellent instructor. I screwed up big on my paper for his class, but he let me Re-Write it Because he knew I worked Extremely hard and put in alot of effort. In the end I wrote about TR and through that I actually gained valuable insight. I ended up with an A+
Amazing teacher. So knowledgeable. Funny. 3 hour lectures are a breeeeze. Love him!!! Wish he taught more classes. I would love to take more classes with him. Attendance is mandatory, he doesn't take attendance, but it will DEFINITELY help you come test time.
Dr. Dinella is a great Professor who loves what he does. But in order to pass the class attendance and effort are super important! Lectures are interesting and he's willing to help students who try in his class. I recommend Dr. Dinella but do not expect an "easy a", you must work for it but it's worth it.
I took Professor Dinella's GOVT 132 and I am currently in his GOVT 133 class. He is amazing. He is very knowledgeable and his wit/humor makes the class go by fast. I am not a government major, but because of him I decided to declare government as a minor. He is simply the best.
Best professor at Mason.
Best class and professor at Mason. Definitely take.
Hilarious. Amazing professor. Learned a lot and had a fun time going to class. He jokes around with his students a lot, so if you're easily offended you'll have to get over it. No homework, just 1 paper a midterm and a final.
Prof. Dinella is such a nice man, and is incredibly compassionate and understanding. That said, this class was confusing. I wouldn't take again. His lectures were a lot of tangents, and I didn't really know whether to go by what he said in class, or if i should just read the book and ignore what he said. Nice man, but I wouldn't take him again.
This professor is one of those rare finds today. Fantastic lecturer and is constantly repeating what needs to be learned for the tests, also fantastic stories. I have also taken him for Govt 133, I didn't need to, but I enjoyed 132 so much. Come to class, take notes and listen to everything he says. If you have the opportunity take a Dinella class.
Come to class, listen to his enjoyable stories and explanations. Everything he says can be on the test. Write down every detail. Read the news and know about history and current events.
Take this class, take any class with Dinella! He should teach some history class! GMU History Department if you are listening!
Prof. Dinella is by far my favorite professor's at Mason, expect to actually learn something new every class, his lectures are amazing, and he really cares about his students. I have already registered for another class with him next semester.
Tons of fun. Great lectures. Pay attention
Great professor and one of the few that gives you multiple angles on international events and history. Tests are hard if you don't read or pay attention in lecture. Only three grades (one paper). He cares for his students and wants you to pass
I took Dinella's 322 class. He is amazing, and finds a way to get personal stories to be life lessons regarding the class subject. He is hilarious. He can be edgy sometimes, but it is never hateful, all in good fun. Its a great change from the standard govt. professor. I'd take him 1,000 times over.
This guy is awesome and very well informed about the worlds affairs. He is politically incorrect but that should not be used to judge his teaching abilities. He has two exams (midterm and final) and an essay. He does have readings but gives out handouts. Take this guy for sure!
Dinella is a funny guy, and he presents different viewpoints than you will get from other professors. Make sure to pay attention in class and take notes on what he says, because the tests mostly come from his lectures. If you don't take good notes you're looking at a D on the first test. If you go to class and take notes an A is very achievable.
Dinella is a great professor. He talks a lot and almost everything that comes out his mouth is on the test including jokes, quotes and random references. Take detailed notes. Read book and take notes. If he shows anything on projector, take notes! He assigns 1 easy paper. Dinella jokes a lot but cares for students. Try not to miss exams.
This guy is the freakin' man! Every lecture was fantastic and eye-opening. Foreign politics was the last thing I thought I be interested in but boy was I wrong. This is a man who doesn't teach for the money. Do yourself a favor and take this course.
2 tests and 1 paper. Tests come directly from lectures, so take detailed notes (including quotations, images, personal anecdotes). Attendance matters as part of your grade, and you can't pass without taking notes - don't bother complaining about your grade if you've missed more than 2 classes. Cares about students, is funny and inappropriate.
Professor Dinella is arguably the best professor I've ever had. Given, there is only 2 tests and 2 papers, but he gives you every possible way to pass. His lectures will make you learn about the REAL world as well as class material. He will shock you (in a good way) with some of the things he says, but it is all for the benefit of his students.
The professor is amazing and wants to you to come to class and try your best the most energetic class ive ever had and the professor is extremly cool for some he might be harsh but hes the best professor ive ever had
At the beginning of the semester, I did not like him as much, but at the end I really respected him. I learned so much more about politics around the world. I am truly grateful that I was able to be a part of his class, will definitely take another class with him! Very insightful and knowledgable! Just make sure to go to class and READ!!!
Professor Dinella is the kind of professor that reminds you how fun learning is. Every class I felt like I learned something about the subject, and also real life. If you get offended easily then don't bother with his class, but one of the reasons I liked him so much was that he didn't shy away from the truth to spare feelings. Go to the lectures!!
Honestly, and this is from the bottom of my heart, Prof. Dinella is the best man I have ever learned from. Will do whatever it takes to make you think outside your bubble you have lived in your entire life. He is a man of honor and integrity and truly a model of how us millenials should look up to and ALSO other professors. Best dam prof. GMU has.
Honestly my favorite professor at GMU. I took this course because I took 133 with him and I loved it. Would totally recommend him to anyone that wants to learn a lot of information that applies to the real world. He is extremely funny and loves to joke around, but he respects all of his students. Two exams and a paper. Take notes and study hard.
Self-assured, relates to students at all levels. Brilliant, w/a sense of humor that lightens the worst textbook. WRITE DOWN WHATEVER HE SAYS b/c even movie clips matter. Excellent test prep. Anticipate an A again. Will take every class he teaches, b/c he has enhanced my overall education! GMU should have him teach HIS too. Hope he never retires!
Dinella's classes are always at least 1/3 people who have taken him before and love him. I'm personally on my second class with him and would take him forever if I could. He has a tendency to only teach the 3 hour once a week classes, but it's so worth it, you don't even realize the time passes with his lectures
It should be mandatory that all GMU students take a Dinella class. Absolutely brilliant man. He's a realist, American patriot, and knows what he's talking about. Wonderful human being.
Wonderful, brilliant, fun, direct. Show up, pay attention, and youll pass
Professor Dinella is an amazing professor that everyone who is majoring in Government should take for one class. With that said he is not politically correct, but that makes it much more enjoyable. I took him my first semester for 2 classes after completing my Associates at a CC, and he made my semester that much more enjoyable. Make sure to read!
If you have an opportunity to take any of Dr. Dinella's classes, you should! He's a great lecturer, funny, and knowledgeable. He's definitely not politically correct but he encourages discussion. Knowing how to argue your point constructively is an important skill. He sincerely cares about students and will go the extra mile to help you succeed.
Professor Dinella was an awesome professor. He was straight to the point and upfront. He seemed a bit rude or heartless at times, but thats because some people can't take a joke or the truth. He checked attendance each class and had very lecture heavy classes, no powerpoints. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Dinella was awesome and literally reminded me of my grandpa. Hes funny and entertaining and jokes around with the class. He doesnt like when people dont raise their hands. Few assignments for grades. Reading is easy and recommended. The tests are usually based off his lectures more than the reading. No power points. All around great professor
Dinella is a little abrasive, but deep down he's really sweet. He says a lot of controversial (but usually true) things, I think to teach students how to deal with hearing things they don't like/don't agree with in a professional setting. He's a really great professor and really cares about his students. You have to pay attention in his class.
Dinella is an acquired taste but if you put everything aside, he isn't terrible. Make sure you take good notes and even write down some of the most ridiculous things he says because they will be on the exam. Also READ THE BOOK because stuff rom it will pop up on exams. The exams are basically all memorization so make sure you study
About 2/3 of the class time is consumed by topics not even related to the lecture. At the end, he ended up rushing the whole chapters in the textbook and told us that it was because of students' lack of in-class participation. The syllabus is uploaded online, so take a look at it before considering to take this class just based on his good reviews.
Dr. Dinella is a breath of fresh air. Every student should take a class with him. The invaluable lesson you take is learning how to formulate constructive criticism and you see the world from a different perspective. A must take, his lectures were the highlight of my semester.
The class is taught part from the textbook and part from the lectures. His antidotes about nations that we discus are often not necessary. They are very one sided as he is a born bread American, served in the US Navy, so it's safe to say he is biased. But you can say that its necessary as in GMU the teachers are most the same. He's different.
Honestly one of the best professors at GMU. His lectures are interesting and he's really funny. He knows what he's talking about but isn't stuck up like most other professors in the government department at this school.
He is not interested... what a horrible disappointment - take this class with someone else. Avoid !!!!!!
Professor Dinella HILARIOUS!!! His class was such a joy. Super easy course.
The best professor I've ever had at GMU. I've learned more from him than any other professor. He knows how to capture a student's attention which is what will land anyone an A. I truly wish other professors would teach like him.
Amazing professor, he actually cares about his students. He will give you an extension if you have a good reason. He will pick on his students, but he is funny about it. Show up to class and you will defiantly pass. He also has extra credit on his tests.
Don't take this class with this professor even if you're required to. Try to take GOV 322 with a different professor.
Best professor I have ever had at GMU. He loves what he does and you can see it. You do have to attend the lecture but they're entertaining and he tells stories to keep you interested. He will give you an extension if you have a good reason. If you can DEFINITELY take a class with him.
Great experience, goes beyond a normal college course. Excellent lectures, I have enjoyed ever class I have with him! Highly recommend.
you will fail the exams if you don't attend class but professor dinella is very good at lecturing about the content while also keeping it interesting and being funny he has been my favorite professor so far and if you have the option to take him i highly recommend it
Dr. Dinella is a saint! Great lectures that you might not think are relevant at first but turns in to practical knowledge. He is a Republican that might offend you but he means no harm and loves his students. He encourages you to participate and speak up. Overall He is the man!
Dr. Dinella was by far my favorite professor at Mason. His lectures are entertaining and he calls things how he sees them-so be prepared to hear things that aren't PC. Pay attention and speak up and you'll learn a lot, have fun, and get a good grade. Definitely take one of his classes if you can!
Amazing lecturer and gives great feedback for the midterm paper without being a tough grader. This was my first government class and I really enjoyed it.
Dinella is a great professor!! I loved taking his classes and he is SUPER funny! He really knows how to make the class engaging and his wide life experience gives him a lot of credibility so he can speak to a lot of world issues. He does not use BB but his lectures are easy to follow and there are few assignments. Read the book and you will be fine
Govt322 can be a very intense/heavy course but Dinella finds ways to make it super interesting! I definitely recommend taking him for a three hour block because his lectures are so fun, interesting, and engaging that time flies! Going to class is key to do well on the tests but it is well worth it! He has standards but is very understanding/caring
Professor Dinella is a real gem among the GMU staff. He has a very fresh realist prospective that gives students an honest view of International Politics. Prepare for some teasing in class but none of it is personal. The readings are genuinely interesting and are definitely on the test. Take this professor you will not regret it!
Dinella is a great prof. for the subject. He has strong views, but is respectful of the fact that yours may be different (especially if you can present a solid argument). There is only 1 paper & 2 exams - you really have to put effort in to them all. He clearly loves to teach & is very approachable. He does tease people, but will stop when asked.
He's the best professor I've had in the last semester! His lectures are seriously engaging and he genuinely cares about his students. The book is a must, but as long as you show up to class, take notes, and do some light reading of the book here and there you should pass - easily.
What a great professor! I wish I have more than 300 char. to describe how amazing he is. Probably the realist Prof. ever. Doesn't sugar code. WANTS TO HELP STUDENTS USE CRITICAL THINKING. So funny, can't fall asleep in class. I simply admire him. I miss turning the evaluations by seconds, I ran across campus to turn it in, he deserved it.
He doesn't use ppts or blackboard but don't let this scare you away! This is a very simple class as long as you attend most of the sessions and listen. The lectures are very entertaining, funny, and engaging. They were easy to follow even for someone in their first semester of college. I urge you to not pass up the opportunity to learn from him.
Dinella is a conservative, not politically correct professor who doesn't lecture about readings or course material and prefers to discuss things he finds interesting. He rambles and the class discussions were not beneficial. The class wasn't hard, just offensive and boring.
Prof. Dinella keeps it real with his non-PC statements. Sometimes during his lecture on the current country will have an interjection of a previous country or non-testable country that makes it difficult to have organized notes. He said a few things contrary to the textbook; his words are "correct". One paper on country of choice is only homework.
What an amazing professor. Those who dont like him obviously skip class and/or dont do the reading. Hes also a really fair grader.
Dr. Dinella is awesome. Those who complain clearly dont study. Or come to class. Or both. Hea pretty upfront with what it takes to do well in his class. If you want an easy A, with no effort then you probably shouldnt be in college.
If you're in college and don't expect to have your political ideology challengelled from time to time, don't bother taking Dinella's class. Dinella makes solid arguments about his positions and if you're not grown enough to hear an opposing viewpoint without crying, then my recommendation to you is to take a look in the mirror and examine yourself.
Professor Dinella is hilarious, but he is a former Army officer and foreign service "big wig" so he expects effort and respect. Two exams based on lecture so attendance is key, plus one 6-8 page paper. Do the reading because he WILL call you out. He appreciates sophisticated academic writing. If you do quality work you will be fine.
I liked Dr. Dinella and thought he had a lot of information to share. This was an online COVID class. My advice would be to take notes on EVERYTHING. A lot of his tests include analogies and personal experiences that aren't in the readings. There's a Midterm, Term Paper, and Final. TAKE NOTES AND READ. Other than that he's hilarious.
He gives no feedback and he tests you on random things he says in class, so if you don't write every little thing down - you'll probably fail. I love international relations and I got a C in his class. I also feel like I didn't learn as much as I would've with a different professor. I would take someone else unless you could take this prof in perso
I took hi ma few years ago and he was amazing. Attendance, a research paper, and two exams make up the grades. He's very entertaining and likes discussing things with the class. Possibly my favorite teacher I've had at GMU.
Dinella is my favorite professor at GMU. He cares about his students and their success while making the material he covers interesting and funny through his lecture style. I loved going to his class every week because it didn't feel like I was being talked at, he was very engaging and has a wealth of knowledge to share. Definitely take his classes!
Midterm, Final, and one 6 page paper that he grades generously if you just try. He has the best lectures I've ever attended, and he's very funny and personable. Also, he has a "no-fail" philosophy if you manage to show up to almost every class and do all the required work. Tests are much easier if you have good notes and do the readings beforehand.
Dinella made this class really enjoyable. I felt like I really learned a lot in this class and enjoyed hearing him speak about certain topics even though I didn't agree with him at times. You have to come to class and do all the readings to do well on the exams. I suggest taking notes on the things he says to make the exams easier.
Very good course taught by a very good professor. Class is super easy if you show up and are relatively engaged. Take a lot of notes from lecture. Everything on tests he does mention in class but it might not always be what you think. Lots of life experience. Would take again.
I took his class in the Spring Semester of 2022. He is a terrific teacher who is very knowledgeable. His course is structured on three exams. All of which are easy as long as you come to class and listen to his lectures and read the book. Hint: Remember all of his personal stories!! Although I got a B- in his class, that was due to my own fault.
Dr. Dinella is the best! The assignments are one paper, mid-term, final, and participation. Make sure to take notes on everything he says in class. The professor and the TA care for students and don't want them to fail. His instructions are simple, read the assignment and show up to class!
This is the best prof I've taken yet. He is so smart and truly wants you to learn - I felt very respected by him. He will tease students often, but it's in good fun. Don't take this class if you don't want to listen but breeze by. You have to come every class - he doesn't use or post lectures. I HIGHLY recommend this class - you will learn tons.
Professor Dinella is an interesting character. Has interesting views on numerous IR subjects, and as such, is very interesting to listen to. For a 3 hour lecture though, he does derail from the topic often. There is also ALOT of required readings, so be prepared to spend a lot of time reading, then going to lectures. Discussions in class one sided.
This class is essentially a one-sided lecture that is based partially on the lecture, and partially on tangents (of mostly non-PC material). However, he gives great feedback on tests and papers and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. Just keep your head down, do the readings, and show up to class (and answer him when he asks a question).
I really enjoyed this class! Professor Dinella is a great lecturer and really cares about his students. This class is what you make it! If you show up ready to learn and actually try- your grade will reflect it!
Professor Dinella and Sammy create an inclusive learning environment. Professor Dinella is knowledgeable about diverse cultures and cares for students. Sammy is super kind and very beautiful. Both have the best interests of students at heart. Highly recommended!
P. Dinella is very unique & interesting. He can be intimidating at first, but when you get used to him, you understand he's just a bit quirky and sarcastic. Grading is very clear and fair. You really must go to every lecture & do the readings, but it's not bad. He has a strong personality, but really cares about his students. Lectures are unique.
Professor Dinella is probably one of the best professors I've had here at Mason. He gives great, detailed, feedback and cares about his students' success in/out of the classroom. His lectures are extremely helpful, if you pay attention in class this should be an easy A. He will challenge you, but that's what college is for. 10/10 would take again.
Dr. Dinella's AMAZING! He truly cares about his students & wants to see them succeed. He loves what he does & is nice, respectable, humorous, & intelligent. He has a unique teaching style & is truly a dying breed of professor in terms of how he is. Such as how he tells stories & anecdotes, which serve a purpose, & how he never has boring lectures.
Prof Dinella is one of my favorite professors from GMU. His life and work experiences give a unique perspective to the course concepts. He encourages you to read from the textbook, but I found you can get through the class fine by paying attention and taking notes during his lectures. He also gives clear and detailed feedback on the course paper.
Prof Dinella's classes were lecture heavy but he made sure to break it up by bouncing between the textbook and experiences/stories. Initially it may seem like his tangents are not relevant, but they will connect the readings to real life and be on the midterm or final exam. He genuinely cares about his student's success and I would take him again.
Dr. Dinella has a vast experience in academia and military. His teaching style was on point. His anecdotes made the class more enjoyable. I learned immensely from him. I would highly recommend taking a class with Dr. Dinella!
I didn't know what was going on in the class to be honest. heavy reading. heavy exams.
