I had the online course so it wasn't very hard. In his syllabus he seems very hard and overwhelming, but once you get an understanding of the course it's easy.
I'm so tired of the harry *ss atempting to show the sexuality of children's literature. Besides, how does incest,****, and violence fit into a children's lit class? I WILL NOT BE SHOWING MY SECOND GRADERS EXCALIBUR,a rated R film!
Have the class online and you'll do fine. Be complete with answers and get all the homework in on time. Seems understanding about things.
I think if he ever had the chance, he could teach an incredible set of courses on mythology and science fiction. I know because he taught me all about them... in a class that had nothing to do with them. I can tell he's brilliant, but it made me so mad th
If you enjoy Star Wars, this is the prof for you! Dr. Eiss is a VERY kind man, and willing to help out in any way, but Star Wars is a film, not Children's Lit.
Harry repeats a lot of his information from class to class (which can get annoying) but he is the easiest and most helpful person to talk to. He was my grad advisor and helped me a lot.
I was really wondering why we weren't sticking to CHILDREN'S literature. Learned a lot about mythology and symbolism but we only touched base on the kid stuff in the last month of the class. FILL IN THE BLANK TESTS! STUDY!!!
I took his online class and it was sooo easy! I got an easy "A"! I strongly recommend you take this class for your LIT gen. ed... I barely spent any time on this class, it was a piece of cake!
Harry is incredibly helpful which made me get an A. The papers are a bit frustrating. But, Harry will read your paper before you hand it in and he will make corrections. If you do the work, and go to class you should get an A.
The online class is very easy. Has very annoying pet peeves which drove me crazy. Very quick with responding to emails!
This guy is a jerk and a great example of how not to teach. He never offered a single word of encouragement the entire semester.
Dr. Eiss is a brilliant man with a deep knowledge of symbolism behind literature. Although he repeats material from class to class, he reminds us how the same symbolism repeats itself, even in children's lit. He goes deep into the psyche. Highly recommend if you want to think deep.
I had him for the online version of the class. I thought he was fair, but he did not post lectures on anything we read. If you read a story and interpreted it wrong, he marked you down on your paper, without every clarifying for you. Do not wait until your last year of school to take this class. It will feel like useless busy work.
very helpful
Just finishing his online class and one bit of advice-don't wait to the night before to do your work. You'll be up till 4am. Overall good professor who teaches you to look beyond the text. Could give more feedback on our homework.
The majority of the work is in the first half of the semester. I finished this class at the beginning of November. To get an A you will have to write A LOT. Don't give him short answers. Answer the question, then explain your answer, then give examples. Very helpful professor, ask him questions and he will give you good answers.
He requires two expensive textbooks-- suprising for a 100 level. Of course, one of the books was written by him. A very poor quality book that is VERY expensive ($88). 250 pages, paperback, poorly printed photos in black and white... looks like a crappy copy job. It is more like a manual than a textbook.
Great class. Very interesting and not at all conventional. If anything, this class needs to be more challenging. Dr. Eiss is a great professor.
A very smart man. He sometimes teaches above the student's level, but that's fine with me. The work is not too much, but expect to keep up with readings or you will be sorry.
The books he assigned were completly useless. He wrote one of them; it costs $90 and has NOTHING to do with literature. His assignments are vague at best and his grading is as follows: either agree with my personal opinion, or I will grade you down.
Too much work for a 100 level class.
Too much work for a 100 level class. Two textbooks, he wrote one of them (which is useless) and assigns readings in the other one that you don't need to read. Pretty easy to get a decent grade though, as long as you write everything to the required length and heavily support your claims. He works really hard to help you understand though.
Take ONLINE!!! very easy A! alot of people were complaining about his lecture.. well his online class is straitforward and simple.
Hard papers will be assigned but you are never sure on what he is looking for when you are writing these despite what he says, it was a hard class.
Assigned two books for the class. The literature book was good. But, he added a book "Metaesthetics" which he wrote himself. An OK book but doesnt make sense for a 100 level class. Strict on his assignments. I had to bust my behind to get an A. He should be more lenient on grading and work load. Make sure to work hard and with attention to details.
He was very helpful, when I got one of the assignments confused. The Literature book he used I really enjoyed it, but the other book you had to buy and READ, was pointless. It had nothing to do with the class. He wrote that book himself. Good teacher, but he needs not to push students to buy his book, which was a waste of money.
This man is insane. Dont take his online class. Well I guess dont take any of them. There is no reason we should have had to buy and read a book he wrote that has no point what so ever! And by the way he is a God freak, every thing you will read has something spiritual to do with it. And if you dont agree with the God stuff, look out!
Assigned two books, the literature book was pretty good and it was relevant to the class. The book he wrote was $100, did not make sense for a 100 level class, and was a joke. Expects you to pick up on the same things he does when reading, and if you've got a different opinion, you're marked down.
Assigns a great deal of work for just a 100 level class. Makes you buy and read a book that he wrote, which is mainly and introduction to Psychology. Absolutely nothing to do with Literature. Grades by his own opinion; if you don't think like him, bad grade.
Currently taking this online. Tons of work for a 100 level class. Lots of writing and reading. The one book, a paperback, is about $90 and is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. Has nothing to do with literature whatsoever. One brightside is that he grades a lot easier than expected. Just put effort in your work and you'll do well. I received an A-.
Online class, complete waste of time. I did not learn anything other than his views. Buying the book he wrote was a joke and a huge waste of money.
Do not buy "Metasthetics," just take it out of the library... and you really don't need the other book because he only tests on notes that were written by him, on the board. If you get the notes in class, and memorize them, his tests are very easy. Not much work for this class. Genuinely a nice guy... doesn't feel you should work too hard.
Had him for criticisms of Children's lit...too much Freud. I'm not sure how to exactly apply what I learned in this class with dealing with children. I'd actually recommend NOT using what you learn in this class when dealing with children!
Class was way over my head! We didn't really even talk about childrens lit. in a way which I would be able to apply it when teaching. This is the first and only class I will have to re-take b/c I did not get the college of ed. grade of a C or better to pass. Don't take him!! Not a good learning experiance at all!!!
took this class online, it was fairly easy but there was a lot of work to do, if you give some sort of effort you can get a good grade tho. But the book "Metaesthetics" is a complete waste of time and super difficult to even understand what he is getting at but stick with it and you can easily get a good grade.
horrible class. not at all wat i expected. not too much work for online, but the the stuff he taught was useless. metaesthetics is a waste of time. it has nothing to do with literature, it would be more fit for a psych or philo class or hell, even art interpretation. its not to hard to get a good grade, but you need a 95 or higher for an a.
I would avoid taking his class online. He makes you buy a textbook he wrote as well as a normal book (his is called Metaesthetics). His book was worthless. He seems a bit full of himself--rather pompous. Try taking the class for another if possible.
He should not be teaching childrens when he has no experience working with kids. I will not use any of this that I'm supposedly learning in the classroom. He is very different and he isn't very clear exactly what is going to be on his tests. You have to take notes and his thoughts are all over and you have to study.
Makes every class buy his stupid, over-priced, bad-quality book. Prolly only prof in US who uses it. Book has pretty much nothing to do with lit, wtf. Grades based on how many words written, not WHAT you wrote. If you dont interpret a reading the way he does, youre "wrong" and get marked down. Good thing: he was pretty helpful when I had a problem.
Very full of himself and HIS opinion. His book is beyond a waste of time and is completly irrelevant. The only connection his book had to literature was that it contains words. Describing him as pompus is being kind, this guy makes Niles Crane look like The Dude
I hated him. He graded more on how many words you wrote rather than content. If you do not write the minimum (which is a great amount of words for a stupid definition) you will get a childish response "AHHH" I believe was mentioned a few times And Metaesthetics...worst 90$ spent. had nothing to w/ LIT...
Good class (lit 100/101), metaesthetics book is expensive, confusing and not too many words (big type/lots of pics) for the price. Assignments are EASY, just gotta make sure you hit length requirements. This is a study of opinions ,so hence the length requirements! you can't really judge someone's interpretation based solely on content objectively.
His book is a waste of money, didn't read one word from it. The responses are easy, all i did was copy from other student's responses to create my own. You have to be in class, and the tests are easy, but his opinion and ego over run everything. He's a flat out jerk if you disagree with him. It has NOTHING to do with Children's Literature. BORING!
A waste of time and money. The guy's a complete nutjob who seems to think the only opinion that exists in the world is his own. The textbook was useless and not to mention the work load was too much for a 100 level course. He's extremely critical about everything. E-mailing him does not help, as he will repeat what he told you in the assignment.
this class was different...the first day he seemed really enthusiastic about fiction, but that didn't really continue throughout the course. we read a few books, read short stories discussed them online, and also watched a lot of movies. the exams are all short answer questions worth a few points each so it was easy to mess up on.it got boring fast
It was not fun at all and I didn't learn much from him. I should have learned about him on this website before I took his course.
Class is fairly easy, you really dont even have to read the books assigned as you will watch the movies in class. Tests are easy , 25 fill in the blank type questsions (who was bilbo baggins? what planet was luke skywalker from?) and one essay question (250 word answer, you get the questions weeks before the test). Does have strict length requireme
Very knowledgeable and helpful. A good teacher with a good sense of humar and understanding of the students needs
Dr. Eiss is fantastic - a terrific lecturer.
His class is nothing like what is supposed to be. We have spent very little time talking about Childrens Literature. He has turned this class into what he wants to teach. He wrote his own textbook, and its awful.
This class is ridiculous, as is he. He think's he's an amazing teacher but his class has NOTHING to do with Child Lit. He wrote the book "metaesthetics" and it has absolutly NOTHING to do with the class AT ALL!
This is not a children's lit class, it is a class in Metasthics, psychology, mythology, philosophy, Freud, Jung, and mostly Joesph Campbell. He may know a lot about children's lit but he doesn't teach it. I feel I was cheated out of the class I paid for. He should not be allowed to teach children's lit if he is going to use it to teach his own agend
Great teacher! You will learn to be a better writer in this class. Learning to write about literature is important, EVEN if it's children's literature.
I have to agree with the others. This was supposed to be a childrens literature course and it felt like I was in an advance psycology course! He talked more about how the mind works and ways of thinking versus childrens lit. Sure they can relate but a whole semester of it was redic. He takes attendance too so go to class if you decide to take him.
He was alright. I hated that you need this class for education and it is only based off of two exams which is everything you learn not to do in education. You do online assignments that you don't get points for, just deducted if you don't do them. Hard grader...NO PARTIAL CREDIT ON TESTS!!!! Very into himself
Listen to the others, he is ridiculous. There are five textbooks that are required and he has written two of them. For extra credit discussions you have to buy another one of his books. He only has two tests which are way too hard. Attendance is mandatory and your grade will suffer if you don't attend. I am extremely disappointed with this class
I actually enjoyed his class. His textbook is expensive, which sucked, but he's not that bad of a professor. He was very clear, I never had trouble understanding what was being taught. Don't expect to just learn about children's literature; he brings in psychology, neurology, etc...but I feel that I really learned a lot from this course
Must buy book, Metasthetics. Wrote his own book and kind of has an uber high opinion of himself. Went through whole first part of semester without reading any of the children's literature. Exam is extremely intense and you MUST be good at taking notes and going along with him mentioning ten different authors in 15 minutes and catch all details. UGH
He is okay but the tests are pretty hard, its credit or no credit
He makes you do busy work! You will have responses to readings that are not count in your favor but if you don't do them they hurt you. The 3 books are all written by Him and are in a high language and very opinionated. Must take go to all classes and listen and write down EVERYTHING! Sorry if you HAVE TO TAKE HIS CLASS!
This class was very hard. I am good at english at it was the first D I have ever received. His class was all notes oriented, and your grade is based off two extremely hard exams! I WOULD NOT suggest his class to anyone!
Given the chance to go back and make a different decision about taking this class, I would DEFINITELY choose another professor. It's not that Dr. Eiss is a bad guy, it's just that his class has no relation to what most of us think of as "children's literature." Also your grade is based on the midterm and a final, so one slip up and you're done.
I absolutely agree with the 2 statements previous to this-this is not a Children's Lit class, it is a Mythology class. At the end of the semester, we FINALLY read 2 novels...your grade is based on a midterm & final-completely unfair grading system. Dr. Eiss is nice but, I would choose another professor, if I had it to do again.
The grade for this class is only based on the midterm and final. They are 100 points a piece and he gives you the essay questions ahead of time (which are worth 25 points). The exams are based on his lectures only, so you must attend and write everything down. He did offer 15 points extra credit as well. I agree, it was more of a mythology class.
This is not a children's literature class, would agree that it is more mythology. If I could go back and make another decision I would take this course with another professor. It is not what I expected for a children lit class. STUDY STUDY STUDY or you are screwed.
I couldn't agree more with the other comments. I retook this class with Eiss and I blew it better w/the first prof I had the class with. Eiss' idea of "children's literature" has absolutely nothing to do with REAL children's literature.
This class had very little, if anything, to do with either Children's Literature OR mythology. Halfway through, and we'd only watched Excalibur. NO emphasis on other myths, NO mention of chl. lit., and the Metaesthetics book is a joke which doesn't count toward your grade OR discussion, but he WILL lower your grade for not doing online discussions.
he does not do anything with childrens lit and only watched one movie. his exams were not over any of the notes or any of our discussions. random questions!
This is NOT a children's lit class! We barely touched on any children's books and mostly had to read his crappy textbook which had nothing to do with children's lit. either. Your grade is based on the midterm and final only and in order to receive extra credit, you have to read his OTHER book. What a joke! I wish I had taken this class at OCC.
Here's how it works: You have two tests that make your grade. You don't get full credit on a hw assignment, you get pts OFF a test. You're late/absent 4 times? Final grade is lowered by a letter. You miss the wrong day? Go from a B to a D on a test. You want a study guide? Ha! You want a test that you study under 7hrs for? Please! Cut breaks? Right
His teaching revolves around lectures that hardly relate to the text, grading is based off of 2 exams that don't relate to the text. I made flash cards based off his lectures as the semester went and memorized all my notes, yet much of the the exam was on material he did not cover & received C+. I'm extremely disappointed. I wouldn't recommend him.
The textbook (writen by him) has barely anything to do with the actual class. Two tests with online posts summarizing his book, and if you miss a class you're pretty much screwed for the midterm/final. Show up for class all the time, and you're still going to put in days of studying to keep a B. Very unclear about test material. DO NOT RECOMMEND!
My favorite professor so far since entering college. The class was hard only because there were 2 tests that made up your whole grade. The tests were only on notes in the class, hence mandatory attendance. There are 7 online responses (and 3 extra credits). SUPER EASY. Just study hard. Don't take if you enjoy skipping class or hate studying.
Answers emails immediately. Helpful. Easy tests. Funny sense of humor. Takes CHL to a whole new level. I'd recommend this class. You'll learn a lot and even though he goes on about stuff you don't expect would be in a CHL class, it's all good - really interesting.
I did not like this class because it was strictly lecture and you had to take notes. I like instructors who give assignments. Towards the middle of the semester, I feel like the topic was not about children's lit. Also, the stories that we did read were boring and off topic.
Do not take this professor. All he does is talk the whole time, very quickly, and expect you to write down everything he says. He was asked to provide lecture notes for a student by the DRC and he told the student to get notes from another student...who also didn't have very good notes because its impossible to follow along. Only midterm and final.
I like Dr. Eiss as a person, but this class does NOT revolve around Children's Lit. The textbook is very difficult to process and if you don't take excellent lecture notes...and I mean EXCELLENT, you will do poorly on exams.
If you are willing to go above and beyond for Children's Lit but if you actually wanted to learn about Children's Lit than do not take this class. He makes you read books that he has written which have nothing to do with the topic. All of his exams are short answer and from his lectures not the books. His lectures are very hard to decipher.
The class didnt seem to have anything to do with childrens lit. I had a difficult time taking notes because everything was always fast paced and hard to understand. The grade is based on the midterm and final so you better take some good notes. Isnt very helpful answering questions through email. Would not recommend.
This class is extremely hard. It's not really "children's literature" it's all off topic. The grade solely depends on the midterm and final exam. I do not recommend this instructor.
The worst professor I have had ever. This isn't a childrens lit. class! It is more so an impossible class with discussions that do not make sense. Whatever you do avoid taking this class! Although this professor was nice it wasn't worth the class.
As a person, he was interesting BUT the class didn't have anything to do with children literature. He stressed more about Excalibur (the movie) rather than literature. Required readings were VERY long and boring (most readings were about how creativity links with different sides of the brain and the history of neurology).
Terrible Professor. Class is about mythology and studies of the brain(psychology). Nothing to do with children's lit. Big ego. I do not recommend taking this course with him. The test's are very difficult for they are 25 short answer questions, with an essay question. Must take extremely good notes to do well on the test. Do not take this class. :(
Do not take him! He writes his own books and they are based solely on his own opinions, which are completely absurd. His lectures are boring and his tests are extremely difficult.
Seems like a nice guy, but basically he is a horrible professor. Nothing to do with Children's Lit, way too much work for this kind of class- and you only learn about mythology and psychology. I would highly recommend you avoid him at all costs if you are truly interested in Children's Literature.
This professor was absolutely terrible! This was not a children's lit class. It was all his own opinions and the tests were way to hard. Do not take this class with this professor, you will regret it! read the other comments I'm not lying!
This is NOT a Children's Lit class! He wrote all the textbooks for the class. His online discussions are tedious and only his opinions matter! His class is way harder than the average introductory class!
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH HARRY EISS! he was arrogant, disrespectful, and self-absorbed. he has the exact same syllabus for both mythology and intro to childrens lit! the tests are 100% lecture based nothing to do with the book or assignments. actually go to class or you dont stand a chance. find a study buddy, that is the reason i passed
I just had to take my first exam with Dr. Eiss I can can say that I will have to retake this class. The exam was all lecture based and I could tell the people around me were struggling as well. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH DR. EISS.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I took it with an interest in Childrens lit and left with one of the worst experiences in a classroom. Not only is he verbally abusive, but I learned very little from this class, if anything. The book is nearly useless on the exams, while the lectures are worse. Also, Excaliber is the MAIN FOCUS,not even taught in classrooms.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. The book is only used for online discussion assignments. He wrote the book and it is full of his opinions which are unquestionable. If you miss class or don't take good notes you will have trouble. Tests are based on lecture and the three fiction books. Killed my GPA. Worst class I ever took.
The class didn't go over ANY stories of Mythology just ideas. He didn't give points for attending, but took them away if you missed. NEVER ever had a class do that. Very full of himself; one of the texts is what he wrote. Half the class failed the midterm and he had to curve it. One of the worst professors/classes I've ever had!
I took Dr. Eiss for Children' Literature and I really enjoyed the class. It was entirely based on notes from the lectures and a few books to read outside of class. Show up, takes REALLY detailed notes, read the books, and it's a breeze (I did and got a 97%). Although a little eccentric, Eiss loves the subject and wants his students to as well.
Most disappointing class I have ever taken. I was warned before that I may not like this professor, and they were right. It's an easy A, but his grading is very inconsistent. I wish there was someone else who taught the class and made it more enjoyable. It's too bad he's the only one who teaches FolkLit because it's required for CHL minorsmajors.
Awful. His lectures are very off topic. I took this class as part of my minor and I was very disappointed. Class is taught as iff it were a 100-level literature course. Would not take again, ever.
He doesn't help at all. His mid terms are worth 100, exams worth 100, and homework 100. So if you don't do well on test you probably won't do well in the class. He doesn't help with trying to pass the test's and doesn't seem to care if you succeed.
If you take his myth course you will not learn about mythology. Instead you will learn: Star wars Science Fiction The Power of Twofiction book 10 percent will be on the 4 major myths. Two exams are incredibly hard. The lectures are boring and unorganized. Unless you have previous knowledge about myths, then you'll understand. Avoid this class.
The most ideal class you could ask for. Gave just as many extra credit assignments as regular assignments! Added 10points onto exam, when realizing everyone missed a part. Decided we were only meeting on Tuesdays during TR classes. Very interesting information, watched excalibur (awesome)! Very consistent with information/grading. Clear with info.
I had to retake because I failed the first time. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. I was failing, but ended up passing because he adds in the ec. The tests are hard. If you miss class he takes points away. I had a funeral, emailed him, and he STILL took points off. Stuff he teaches has been proven false and is rude if you point it out. Meets online 1 day a week
he is very nice but do not take this class! his lectures and notes are not relevant to what you are suppose to read and the online discussions cover more than he has ever touched on. he is a very tough grader with the discussions and goes on a rant when giving you critiques. this class barley has anything to do with folk literature.
I tried to give Eiss a fair shot, but as I write my sixth paper for this class I just can't do it. We're past the halfway point in the semester and already I know that I wouldn't take him again. His lectures are sporadic, assuming he lectures at all. Harsh grader, especially when one considers that he doesn't teach what he tests. Avoid if possible.
I know you're telling yourself that you can manage this class, despite this professor's awful reviews, but trust me. You can't. Everything you hear about him is true. You won't learn anything and you'll want to yank your eyes out. Serious hit to my GPA. Find another time and another professor to take this class with, because Eiss is a mistake.
Not very good. Gets upset if you bring up suggestions for the class and the structure of the class is confusing. Extra credit is given but barely gives out 100% on assignments and tests
This class has made me cry. Tests impossible. Most days were spent watching TV movies from the 80s. I'm being serious, the books we were assigned weren't even mentioned in passing in the classroom. We don't discuss ballads or folktales, but we are told about left-brain/right-brain theory, Jung, and Freud. In fact, that's what the tests are about.
Do not take this class! He does not go in depth, only wants his answers, and I learned nothing. Does not want any feedback on how to make the class better.
Dr. Eiss is very confusing. He rambles in his lectures, talks about stuff that has nothing to do with class, and his opinions on things are what you are tested on. We read 6 books and did 6 identical online assignments for them (sort of like an outlined essay). In class he talks about "theories of life" which you are tested on. Nothing makes sense.
He is not very specific in his lectures, changes what he says. Take notes, as that is what the tests are on. Two test per semester, along with several reading assignments and papers. Read the assigned books! Would not take this professor again. A nice man, but not meant to teach this class. Points are lost for being absent/tardy.
Do Not Take With Him! He doesn't stay on the children's lit path, we spent most of this semester learning Mythology & Midevil Greek Concepts. 1000 word papers worth 10-20 pts & you'll never get 100%. He expects you to do the HW before he teaches the topic. He moved our midterm up so he could vaca & canceled classes for a week also. Didnt learn CHL
He gives 5 assignments and 5 extra credit assignments but doing all would be required to get an A since he's a hard grader. The midterm and final are hard but make sure to ask in detail what will be on it to study. Take notes in class and read the assigned books and you'll pass.
I think he is the worst professor I have had at EMU. He grades so hard and horribly. We watch irrelevant movies and don't discuss anything that relates to the homework he assigns us. I've never failed a class before this one. He takes away 5 points from your grade for a daily absence even if youre just watching a movie that day.
This was one of the worst teachers I had. I could lose 2points for being 3 minutes late to class. I ended up missing close to 30points in being late and missing 1class. If your not punctual don't take this class. He is Also a hard grader. I did extra credit and it wasn't required length and didn't receive any credit at all not even 1pt for effort
Honestly one of the worst Professors that I have ever had. He is very unprepared for class and it is the same material covered from his other classes that I have had him for . Really don't learn anything new. He is really hard at grading, I do everything that is required for an assignments and still can't get a good grade.
NO! You would think it would be an okay class, but I warn you, do not take it! It is basically a hybrid course, and you dont have to seem hm very often (thank god), but his lectures are boring and long. Your online assignments are arbituaty. The only plus I have was the book the power of 2. Two exams, both dont relate to lecture.
He's a great professor. As long as you keep up with the assignments, he'll help make sure you pass his class.
Impossible homework, short answer and essay question exams, assigns terrible books, rambles, teaches nothing, waste of time, a book a week, lecture content rarely on exams. Terrible teacher.
Beware: this is NOT a mythology class! You do literary reviews of random children's books and movies with a sprinkling of mythological examples (that he is often incorrect about). He expects you to do a lot of work that he grades harshly. Missing class for any reason will lower your grade drastically. Do NOT recommend
Your grade is made of up ten homework assignments... and five of them are extra credit. I cannot stress it enough, DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. It's not hard, just a little time consuming, but it's worth it.
he didn't teach me anything about literature or harry potter and how it relates to the modern world. i know more about him and his personal life and beliefs than i know about harry potter's. i wouldnt take this course again, at least not with this professor.
He talked more about his beliefs than about actual Literature, got many myths wrong and what there symbols meant. I definitely knew more about Harry Potter, and showed a better understanding for Literature than him. Homework takes hours to complete and was very hard and confusing.
Eiss is hands down the worst profsssor I have ever had at Eastern. Grades hard & doesnt give you good feedback. Do not get half credit on exams- all or nothing. Does not care what youre reasoning is for missing class- could be a funeral, car accident, or like me-was in the hospital, and still deducted points for attendance. HORRIBlE! Avoid him.
you have to show up, -5 points each day missed. do all of the reading and discussions and it's not too bad. lectures all over the place, talks about his own opinions, gets things wrong when talking about history/mythology, very unclear what his midterm and exam will be over. test format is awful, you have to study. don't take this class.
I was very excited to take Children's Lit, but this class was below my expectations. Get ready for every single one of the four children's books you read to be related to the Bible. There are 8 paper assignments. 4 required and 4 extra credit, do all of them because it is your only chance. He is a harsh grader on all of the required assignments.
I was a little nervous seeing all the reviews for this course/teacher, but honestly, it wasn't that bad. Most of the long lectures are fine just keep a pen and paper handy when he writes stuff on the board. His lectures are just a stream of conciousness. Read the books, do the (time-consuming but easy) homework & extra credit. 2nd quartermovies
Every day there is a new lecture filled with incorrect literary terminology, unclear points, and endless side notes that turn into main points (i.e. talking about how he thinks women in heels are attractive) . Be ready to read a book every week and write 3,000 word essays along with them in order to earn an A. Dr. Eiss should not be teaching.
If you're listening to one of Dr. Eiss' endless lectures and there isn't a reference to Christianity that lasts longer that 15 minutes, you must have the wrong professor. I don't need to know how Christianity influenced children's lit. All of the reviews of Eiss are accurate. He is an awful teacher and ALSO he has terrible handwriting.
HI did not benefit at all during this class. I did well in this class because I learned everything on my own. He rambles about everything. Be in class, he takes off 5 points for every absence no matter what reason you have. The assignments take hours to do, but are not very difficult. If you can change your professor, do it now.
This professor is the WORST professor that I have ever had. His study guides for his exams will not help, the final is cumulative no matter what he says. If you miss class you lose 5 points NO MATTER WHAT. He doesn't read the entirety of the assignments you do. He will say things off hand in class that will go on the exams that aren't on the s.g.
This is the worst teacher Ive had at EMU. This isnt a childrens lit/myth class at all. We only read one childrens book all semester, and the rest of the semester we watched movies. The tests were hard because his study guide was not helpful or specific. He mentions important points offhand in his few lectures then never discusses them again.
Out of all the teaches I've ever had, he was the worst. His lectures were unorganized, and unhelpful in relationship to the tests. All we did was read 4 books, one of which was his own work. His tests (midterm and final) were almost impossible because the study guide was vague and he graded heavy, with the tests being 25 short answer questions.
Dr. Eiss has a lot of passion for what he teaches. If you take good notes, NEVER skip class, introduce yourself, participate in class, do the extra credit, the chances of you getting an A is much higher. I took him for two classes, before midterms it was the exact same lectures. Don't take his Harry Potter class, you'll only watch the movies.
He appears to be nice, but he is a very, very boring lecturer. If you take this class in the morning, you may have to fight to stay awake and not doze off. Take detailed notes, especially when he writes on the board. Midterm and Final Exam are each 25 short answer questions which are very specific. Homework is easy, but very time consuming!!!
Harry Potter Literature: Eight discussions, four are extra credit. Harsh grader. The discussions take DAYS to complete. Don't start Harry Potter until after spring break. Lectures are extremely boring. Harry Potter Christmas and watching the movie are the only highlight of the class. (I'm a die hard HP fan, and have a C and put in extreme EFFORT)
