Great teacher really easy, I did all my assignments the night before and got all A’s. Requires class participation, loves to hear students opinions. I disagreed with him on almost every topic and he still greatly respected my opinion.

This teacher is so boring!!!!! i came in the class thinking i was going to read chicano lit or something all he talks about is hOw bush is stupid and if u eat mcdonalds u will diE and all u have to do is bring the damn newspaper and he talks about random things. if i knew he was like this i would have never taken the class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
He's mediocre.
His stories are very funny and he has a unique teaching pattern. He tries to connect his stories to what he's supposed to teach (doesn't always work). He is late to class everyday but is quick to leave so if u have to ask him a question, CATCH HIM! Also don't be surprised if u don't learn anything in his class except on how ur essay should look.

WEIRD GUY!!! BUT AND EASY A++++ IT'S WAS TRULY A WASTE OF MY TIME SINCE MOST OF THE TIME WE DID NOTHING IN CLASS, OTHER THAN LISTEN TO HIS WEIRD IDEAS AND STORIES, OTHER TIMES HE DIDN'T SHOW UP TO CLASS. AT LEAST IT GOT MY GPA UP!!
Horrible!!! Don't expect to learn anything. He is really anal... He won't tell you where your at in the class ..so one minute you can be passing and the next you can be failing. He brags about himself to much and honestly why should u care. If you want to be lazy and not learn anything then take this class...
This is the easiest class you will ever have to take. You will not learn much when it comes to improving your writing skills, but it is an easy A+.
Gamboa has a unique teaching style, it is like other. Those individuals posting up negative comments about him obviously lack the passion of helping out the Chicano/a community. He challenges you to think critically about the issues affecting Chicanos today. If you can't think critically then don't take his class! Simple as that!
He is a great teacher that will really help you improve your writing. He takes great intrest in the success and achievement of his students and is always there if you ever need him.
Gamboa is a unique Prof..Instead of making us discuss reading books in class, he talks about his life and his experiences as a child. He leaves it up to us to read the required book and study words.You write essays on topics given by him. One essay deals with the book so read it!The day of the final we all sat in a circle and talked about ourselves
He's very chill. Some what funny. At times boring and useless. Had to visit MOCA, The Getty Center, and LACMA. Write 2 main essays.
He is a really fun professor, you just listen to him talk about his crazy ideas. it really help on your writing in the way because the crazy ideas he talk about kind the help you come up that to write on your easy!
I took him about a year ago. He wasnt very interesting, and usually talked about how driving is dangerous and that everyday college students are dying because of something stupid. There are 3 papers to write, which he doesnt help you at all with. Also you dont know your grade on the papers until finals are over! ugh! Waste of time.
This is one of the coolest professors! He's always telling stories about his life, very interesting though. Throughout the semester you only write 3 essays, you have to buy the LA newspaper on certain days, you'll read it in class. THERE'S NO HOMEWORK!
he's an amazing professor. i mostly stayed quiet but i took in everything that he told the class. one of the most important classes i have taken :) do the work, think critically, and be there everyday. That's what it takes to be a student.
Gamboa is such an amazing professor. Most of the class consists of his life stories that are intresting and helpful. He knows what he teaches and is really good at it. Your learning not only the subject but also helpful things in life. The course is of 6 essays and the final. NO MIDTERM!!!! YOu have to buy the LA Times once a week.Take Him trust!

The only thing i hated about this class was the online articles we had to read, its way too much! but other than that we only have to write like 4 essays pretty easy tho! his class consists of his life stories. This was probably the main reason why i attended his class you would just entertained and makes you laugh! I would rate him like a 7.
Felt like a philosophy class! Tells all about his life stories and manages to tie it back into what we are talking about. The class itself consist of 6 essay none which deal with Chicano Studies. Overall it was one of my favorite classes this semester, really makes you think about life! Recommend!

He is a truly amazing professor. If you're here to learn about writing then don't take his class. It's a lecture class but his stories are so interesting. Very interesting class! Opens your eyes to a lot of topics. You will look at the world much differently after the class. There are 3 essays, which are usually assigned and then due shortly after. If you do the essays, you'll do fine! He does have 2 books, but they are only required for last essay. I would say this class is stressful, but easy.

Great teacher ! Has great stories to tell, you learn to open your mind critically. Not so much in your writing. Easy pass, he is one of the greatest teachers I have met.
His class was easy. All you did was write. If you show up to class, the assignments are easy. His class doesn't help improve your writing, but very easy A.
His lectures have almost nothing to do with the class. He talks lot about himself and his personal experiences and that is basically what the class is about. The only work we turn in is essay that have nothing to do with the lectures. He had us buy three book but we only used one. It is an easy class if you do your work.
This has definitely been one of my more favorite classes I've taken at csun. The class starts off very slow but it picks up very quickly in the end so make sure not to fall behind. Prof. doesn't only talk about the Chicano movement but also about many important life lessons. He has traveled the world and there is much you can learn from him.
I took his class the first semester he is a very nice man and very nice to his students. He is knowledgable and smart. He is not only teach you how to study but also point to you how to fit for the nowadays society. Specially for international student, he always encourage us to ask when we don't get his point! Take this class!
He is okay. He likes to lecture for the majority of the class. He sends out articles every week and most of them are interesting. He gave our class 3 essays in one month! He has a lot of stories about himself that are pretty cool. I recommend for anyone in the Chicano Studies major!
This man sits (or stands) there the entire class period and just yap yap yap yap yap. haha. He's decent though. I wouldn't recommend him if you're a Chicano Studies major.

Gamboa just stands infront of class and just lectures about his life. His lectures are fun and enjoyable and never dull. This man make you open your eyes and question today's society. Sends weekly emails with interesting information. Won't improve in writing much in this class but it is an easy A class.
It's not class time, it's more like "story time." He literally just talks about his life, EVERY DAY, just talks about his Chicano life. At first listening to him was pretty chill, but it gets REALLY boring. A lot of people fall asleep in class. There's no hw and you only have like 3 essays the whole semester. It's an easy A, but a waste of time.
Tells stories and shares interesting viewpoints during class. Never really teaches material. Sends you on trips around LA and makes you write fairly short papers on the experience. 3 papers total. There is a final - you will need the textbooks. Very random guy, a bit intimidating. He's thoughtful, but not approachable. Lowmedium effort to pass.
Take this class if you're willing to spend an entire hour listening to him talk about his young life in the streets. He seems funny but he's kind of intimidating, straightforward and sassy. Although there's no hw or hardly any work at all, I wouldn't take him again. I'd rather take a class that's interesting.
Prof Gamboa is incredibly knowledgeable and although he may talk about himself a lot, it's up to you to take something from it. I was skeptical throughout the first weeks but I ended up enjoying the class. Read the articles he emails & incorporate things from his lectures in the assigned essays and you'll do just fine!
Make sure to drink coffee before you attend his class because you will fall asleep. For the whole hour long class he will talk about his life then try to make it relate to art. Sometimes he can be interesting, but most of the time boring. Barely have to show up to class, he emails all assignments.
Although he talks for most of the class, and mostly about himself, his stories always have a meaning in them. i believe he modifies his stories to be accurate with todays world. btw he is sassy doesn't like when you get there late, more when its everyday. he will roll his eyes. and you can't argue with him, he seems to get mad when you try to argue
Professor Gamboa has been one of my all time favorite professors. He provides his students with valuable information through online reading material and books. His lectures are inspiring and his stories are designed to influence scholars and maximize their contributions to society. Enjoyed his humoristic and interesting approach to the class
Professor Gamboa has to be my favorite professor of all time! he lectures all throughout the class he does give a lot of papers usually 5 pages the most would be 7 pages but he's a great professor very inspirational! do not show up late to his class!! I would highly recommend taking his class you will not regret it.
Prof. Gamboa's class was the most enjoyable out of my 2 years so far. You write several papers that are based on places you will need to go to like art museums. Although you don't need to read the book, quotes from the book are necessary. I enjoyed his class a lot and would recommend it to anyone.
If you want to easily pass an English class.. Harry Gamboa is the teacher for you. The class is based on four essays and a final portfolio. There are no quizzes or tests. He does however email the class weekly online readings which are optional to read. As long as you show up to the classes and do the assignments you will pass. Boring, but easy.
The grading is pretty simple, 4 essays so if you write a good essay you pretty much get a good grade. His lecture is entertaining but he does not really talk about anything related to the class, just stories about his life. Nonetheless I would take him again because it was an easy A and pretty entertaining.
Gamboa is such an amazing professor and he's humorous I don't think I'll ever have another professor like him. His class is very easy do the essays their is probably like 5 essays assigned through the semester. The final is a portfolio of all the essays you've done. His lectures are very interesting you wouldn't want to miss his class.
I recently took his class and i really enjoyed it he only assigned about 4 essays throughout the whole semester and the final was online. He teaches you how to write an essay and his lectures are all about his life. He is very funny and has lots of knowledge to share with his students.
He will turn your world upside down. Aside from the essays due he takes his time to send articles to read. The articles are informative on current events. His main purpose is to get everyone to understand the way of the world in order to be successful outside school. He wants everyone to be rich, follow his ways, learn from him and you will be.
I took Gamboa back in 2010 and I loved him! His lectures are mostly about life so you can get an understanding of what's going on around the world. Will always catch him on the bus on my way to school as his high end car was always in the shop or so he would say! But I totally recommend him! 7 years later and I still have Blow Out with me!
Although he will rarely mention the books he assigns, it is important that you read them. It is not for a grade, but it will help expand your knowledge on art and Chicano Studies. His lectures are super interesting and will help you realize things you have never thought of before.
Professor Gamboa is one of my favorites. Most of the times he is always talking about himself and life stories, but he is the easiest grader ever. There are 3 essays and you have to visit places in LA to get credits for those. The final was online. You cannot get below b in this class.

Didn't really learn anything from the Chicano/a aspect, however I learned more on how to be prepared for my future. You'll participate in class, by reading out loud your opinion on a question he asks. Read the online articles. Buy the books and read them. Didn't like how we always get compared to students in other schools. However he's great person
Professor Gamboa is a very interesting individual. The "lectures" are just stories of his life, and you wont pick up much from them. He is very nice and easy going, but he still gives you an intimidating vibe. The assignment are only about 4 essays. There are no tests, Plenty of readings though. Read over his prompts carefully, and ask questions!
Professor Gamboa is a cool guy and a good professor , he mostly talks about his life experiences and current events, 3 essays total and a final, books are required and will help you with the essays but he doesn't quiz on them or talk about them much.

No tests of any kind. 3 essays that consisted of: one 5 page, one 3 page reflective letter, and one 7 page interview type essay. The books are "required" but... I got an A+ by reading a good amount to get a sense of how the author wrote/story in a sense. Required to go to downtown LA and take 2 pics for one essay. His stories are good. Easy class:)
A bunch of mamadas in this class just pure lectures that are really boring and he mainly talks about himself more than the actual subject
Class consisted of lectures that were him just talking about himself and his successes rather than the course. Work consisted of three essays that involved having to go to places and proving you were there. Overall, this class was easy but it was by no means worth it. He is rude and mentions how he can easily be teaching at Harvard or something.
This man seriously is the easiest class but has the most BORING lectures, seriously all he talks about is himself and will give you attitude if you answer his questions wrong even though he says the class is a "safe" space. Literally all you need to do for this class is show up like 3 times the whole semester and do his 3 essays and boom easy A

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He doesn't teach the material. All he does is talk about himself and his accomplishments. Attendance is not mandatory, all the assignemnts are posted online. The class only cosnsists of 3 essays, two 5 page essays, one 7 page essay, and a 3 page letter. Not a hard class, just gives the most boring lectures.
This man is a living legend. He does talk about himself a lot but it all relates to the material and it's all very interesting. He's very funny and it's kind of impossible to fall asleep in his class. His assignments are only kinda hard because sometimes his instructions aren't very clear, but other than that, do the work and you'll pass his class.
Lectures the whole class but mostly talks about himself. Attendance doesnt really affect whether you get a good grade or not. Assigns several online readings, not mandatory but discussed in class. You read one book. Grade is based on 3 essays (two 5pg,one 7pg) and reflective letter (3pg). Takes forever to return essays & is sort of a tough grader.
His lectures are pretty heavy, but they're doable. He has the class turn in some lengthy essays. He also checks your essays, but doesn't always give the best feedback, so I highly recommend going to the writing center to have your work checked out. It's two 5 paged essays, one 7 paged essay, a 3 paged reflective letter, and a portfolio.
Do not take this class if you cannot sit through a lecture because that's all he does. I do recommend listening to the man because he has some really good advice that may help you throughout life. At times he does get a little full of himself but bare with it. All he wants is three essays and a reflective letter, you need to do all four to pass.
He is super repetitive and mostly talks about his life experiences but his class is overall really inspirational!! Attendance isn't mandatory. He assigns online readings that may be used for the essays he's going to assign. He didn't assign homework or tests his class just consisted of essays. Would totally recommend if you're looking for an easy A
IF YOU ATTEND CAL STATE UNIVERSITY NORTHRIDGE TAKE HIM! IT WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS YOU MAKE. NAH FR TAKE HIM IT WAS A TOTAL OF 3 ESSAYS, 1 7 PAGE, 1 5 PAGES, 2 3 PAGEs 1 BEING AN ESSAY AND 1 BEING A LETTER. He DIDN'T HAVE A FINAL WHICH IS GREAT. I have no idea how this guy is even a professor, all he does is talk about himself and his "accomplishments". Says he's a world renowned professor but who in the world would sit through his lecture and take him seriously? Don't take him unless you buy into his tinfoil hat agenda.
Im sitting in his class now, its my last day, couldnt be happier. This man is the most self-centered person Ive ever met. He talks about teaching at Harvard and how famous he is. Easy grading. 4 essays + Portfolio. Assigned lots of readings which are more interesting than he is, though some are literally assigned because hes in the reading.
All you gotta do is like 4 essays throughout the semester, read 2 books, write a letter, & a portfolio. Pretty straightforward. He does assign a LOT of weekly readings. He can sound arrogant & cocky but if this class is your only option just take it. It was alright I guess.
I took his class in Fall of 2020. It was as simple as 4 essays throughout the whole semester, one letter, one portfolio, lots of readings to read from, and 2 books to read. He did not give grades until almost the end of the semester. He talked about the governmental issues instead of Chicano Literature and the class is very straightforward.
Only cares about himself. Doesnt even bother to respond to emails. Overall horrible professor he doesnt even use canvas so you have no idea what your grade is.
He is probably one of the most self-centered human beings on this planet. Constantly made the class feel bad and he did not teach anything in regards to Chicana & Chicano Studies. The only time we learned something was when he told us about how he participated in the East LA walkouts. That's it. The class was meh.
Make sure to do the reading ASAP because he'll ask you questions about it randomly. He talks about himself a lot so take that as you will.
We had 4 essays + 1 reflective letter, all combined to create your portfolio. 2 essays were based off Chicano books, which I highly recommend. Professor is intelligent but goes on rants. Class is a challenge but you have tutoring help.
Doesn't use Canvas so you never know what your grade is until the last day of the semester. Does not reply to e-mails. Spends most of the lecture talking about himself and how influential he is. When not talking about his life, he usually talks about politics and theories. Didn't learn anything about art. Frustrating course.
Avoid at all costs if you are not conditionally prepared for Ap level or College level writing. Lectures are super long and boring, and most of the time what they will say is complete gibberish or crazy views about society. You will never actually learn about Chicano/a Art, and instead will spend more time wishing you took a different class.
He will talk about himself most of the times and will never include Chicano studies. Mostly his life and how of a rich person he is. He says stories about his life and you have to take notes and usually "Write this down" kinda scenarios. Honestly I disliked how we had to risk our lives for artwork and even go to the Metro station. BAD TEACHER!
Some of the things he would make us do to get our assignments done was crazy. He would want us to visit different locations to support our papers but honestly no one really did that because of various reasons. He wants you to have these 2 books to support your papers as well. He was alright but toward the end, people stopped showing up.
His lectures were all over the place and had no clear direction. He would talk about his life a lot and make you go to places outside of Northridge to "immerse yourself in art". You HAD to go to these places. He was judgemental towards students and often told us we're not "doing enough for society". He also puts up assignments without telling you.
It was a breath of fresh air to have a professor who wasn't afraid, in this academic environment, to call students on their lack of preparation for a course. The strong Latino culture he emphasized in that class made me feel proud to be a Latina in one of the finest schools in California. It makes me proud to be a Matador.
Professor Gamboa was a great professor i had him Fall 2023 he was my Favorite professor out of all my professors in fall 2023 If you want to take chicano studies take Harry Gamboa and hes a very nice man and fun professor any person at CSUN CAN HAVE.

Somewhat of a difficult class and you don't know your grade until you finish the class. Be prepared to have to sit through not so interesting lectures. Only homework assigned is having to read 2 books that help support your essays. Essays are pretty easy if you are used to college level writing. Overall a decent class but wouldn't take it again.
Try to avoid him. Take him if you want an easy A (3 essays) . He retired 3/4 through the semester and while I had him I always dreaded going to class. He just stands there and lectures the entire time about stuff not class related. He judges his students and is self absorbed. Didnt learn anything about Chicano Art. Class was GREAT after he left.
Gamboa's class is a rollercoaster - expect plenty of anecdotes and outside-the-box assignments. Attendance is a must, but Unstuck ai can help prep for the workload.
Dr. Gamboa was very unprofessional. I had him for my first year and he was very sensitive. He would assume nobody would read the textbook and continue to bash the students. Every time you would ask a question, he would respond in a negative way. He also "retired" mid-semester and left the students in the dark.
