Cool teacher...uber-socialist kinda but* Is more than willing to let students discuss their opinions and thoughts. Grading is extremely fair and not too hard. Meets outside of class at the coffee shop to discuss papers. Too cool. Fun class! I'm taking him again!
Great teacher, really outgoing, wants you to express how you feel. Not hard, but not easy, really helpful, makes class fun, you can say cuss words in his class just don't make fun of homosexuals. Great guy though.
really laid back, more than willing to help. Gives extentions on papers pretty easily. does not drill you with his opinions constantly. very open minded. open to hearing an opposing argument as long as you can legitmately back it up.
Very nice guy. He is helpful if you have a specific question. Does not proofread papers. Extremely funny.
Great teacher. Really encourages class discussion and is really open to personal interpretation of the text. Read assignments because he gets pissed off if he thinks the class hasn't read them. Fair grader, too. Fun guy with a sense of humor.
Best teacher I've ever had. I went to class because I wanted to, not because I had to. Not a joke class at all but not difficult to meet requirements. Great discussions, really opened my mind.
Great teacher. Great classroom discussions, very interesting. Textbook is actually interesting, and about modern topics like entertainment and romance. Fairly easy grader. Grades papers harder as time goes on, but still fairly easy.
Awsome
um im not sure why everyone one here speaks so highly of him, i think hes a very angry person and is blatantly rude. he thinks hes hularious and always laughs at his own jokes. doesnt use blackboard, so you have no idea where you stand at any point. and for some reason, loved to put down people's background and religious beliefs
Dr. Newburn is hilarious. I am thoroughly entertained during class from beginning to end. Really encourages discussion and differing opinions. He really does enjoy what he teaches. Unless you are a freshman. This is understandable.
His class isn't a piece of cake, but it's fun. He is privvy to a lot of modern culture and jokes, so he can relate to his students. Discussions are interesting and easy to dive into. His grading can be a bit hard, but he is always willing to clarify anything and help you achieve a better grade. Very approachable and still a friend. Recommended!
Great teacher. Not easy, but very interesting and always willing to help. Don't text or read the paper in his class, he'll call you out on it. Likes discussion, and he's very positive to comments. I would definitely recommend him.
This class was great. Fun and good discussion. Classroom arguments were very constructive. He is a moderately hard grader.
Nice guy, easy to understand. Like class to discuss texts and points of view. Bad side-very anal over format of papers. Even if it is a great paper he gets hung up in the small details of format. Will take off points for font, margins, and if length is shorter will penalize grade scales..
Very interesting class, but his classes are more laid back than his actual grading. Good professor but be prepared to pay a lot of attention to papers!
Great professor. I've taken several of Newburn's classes and would take more if i could! Very passionate about literature and narrative structure (mainly the short story) and chooses great books/stories to read. Sign up!
Really liked the in class dicussions- they also offered good points/ideas for the multiple papers. Be prepared to put a lot of work in papers, he likes you to revise them after his comments. However, his comments are helpful and he will go out of his way to meet you.
Useless class with useless books.... very socialist with an obvious agenda behind lessions, grades papers/tests pretty hard. I've had worse but in retrospect I would have taken a differnt class
He assigns way too much homework. I had him Tuesday and Thursday and there was at least 100 pages of reading every class due. He chooses favorites and gives them A's. Unfortunately I was not one of his favorites so all my exams and essays were not good. I wouldn't take him again.
I dont know what these people are talking about. Newburn is a great teacher, you must have not been listening or engaged. I am in his class now and he is very clear about everything he wants and is always there to help you with whatever you need. He may lean a little left but he in no way forces it upon his students he encourages people speak up
Encourages office hours and highly recommend using his office hours
Newburn is a great teacher and is more than willing to work with you. If you just do the readings (I mean it is a literature class, you should know what to expect), you will do fine. Go to his office hours, and participate in class discussion and you should easily get an A or B at worst. I definitely recommend Dr. Newburn.
This professor picks out his favorites in the class. I missed only one class and came to office hours. He was so not helpful and when I came to him for clarification on an assignment his response was "welcome to college". I was in honors english in high school and ended up dropping this class with a D. Tip: make urself heard in class discussions
I felt like the readings he assigned were good because they were classics that everyone should know. The work was alot, ten response papers two essays, midterm and a final. I didn't like him as a teacher because he was very negative, some people would call him funny but I thought it was sad. Speak up even though he doesn't require participation
Newburn is a sarcastic funny guy. Definitely read the book because that's what class discussions are about. And participate in discussions! I hated ENG in high school, but his class made me understand the purpose of writing. Go to his office hours for help cause he really clarifies what he wants in the paper. He helped me become a better writer!
Newburn is moody, and his grading reflects that. Paper #1 I worked very hard on & even had my sister read it(ut grad with honors) She thought it was good, I made a D. Paper #2: I wrote in 45 min, and turned it in realizing there were mistakes I didn't correct. I made an A. I ended up dropping his class bc as his mood worsened so did my grade.
He was a really fair teacher. Class wasn't too hard. Nothing outrageous. Go to class and make sure you read, that's what the lectures are based on. His grading was fair. I got whatever grade I knew I deserved even if some were low. He's really sarcastic, but entertaining too.
Great teacher to take. The workload and grading was more than fair. Readings are a must but if you do them and participate in discussion, you will do just fine. Can be sarcastic but that makes him funny. Highly recommend taking any class he is teaching.
I love this teacher. He makes the classs fun and enjoyable. He's a smart ass and swears so if you don't like that, I wouldn't take his class. He has times set up so you can meet with him about papers. I've learned a lot from his classs.
I love this teacher. His work isn't hard, just tedious. He explains everything well. You do have to read a lot, but class discussions are awesome. Take him if you want an A
Not the best teacher I have ever had. But I'm not an English person. I much prefer the sciences
Easy class. Grades papers extremely fair. Sarcastic comments make lecture fun. Discussion is laid back. You get what you put into the class. Go to class, pop quizzes. Read sparknotes and you'll be fine.
This teacher is very moody and takes it out on his students. He grades you on how much he likes you. He did not like me and gave me low grades on my papers (which i had checked by my brother studying english in grad school). He did not tell us that we had a final until the week before hand. Just plain mean teacher!
He was an excellent teacher, and let students run the discussion. Fair grader, but be prepared for a LOT of reading outside of class in order to succeed. Go to class and speak up in order to show that you care.
My hardest class this semester with the most work and I only took it for Gen Ed. Be prepared to read ~80-100 pages per night or use sparknotes. Participation not mandatory but he definitely plays favorites. 3 take home exams, 2 papers, along with reading quizzes (10) and reading responses (10). Not a terrible class but not great either.
For someone who hates all things english, this turned out to be one of my favorite classes. He is very sarcastic but funny, and his lectures and readings are about current events. He is a tedious grader though and makes you think. There is quite a bit of reading too. Overall great professor
I really love English and was excited about discussing it in class but whenever I gave feedback that he may not like or agree with he was often rude and was angry that I didn't like a certain character in a novel. He is also very rude when you ask questions about assignments.
Professor Newburn's class was the best class I have taken in my three years in college. The discussions were very engaging, and the literature he selected for our class was very interesting. I actually enjoyed doing my classwork for his class, and I was certainly challenged. I received a B+ in the class, and I certainly worked very hard for it.
TONS of reading to be done, but overall easy and interesting class. If you're willing to put in the work, this is an easy grade.
Sarcastic but very funny and helpful during office hours. A lot of reading is required in the class as well as a lot of homework. Also, ALWAYS pay attention to FORMAT (he will call you out if an assignment is not formatted correctly).
I brought my papers to Newburn and he was always helpful though u definitely have to work for it - it is not an easy class by any means. The readings are all very interesting and I felt more intelligent after taking this class. I wish there was less stress on writing because it definitely is the worst part, but if u like writing it is a good class
I am not an English fan but Dr. Newburn was very helpful with papers and laid down very clear criteria. He graded fairly easily so long as you listened to his advice in class. He was the first teacher to make English enjoyable for me.
He was a decent guy although he was rather sarcastic. I felt as if he graded our homework fairly easily and then slaughtered us on major papers. On the first three papers, he allowed two rewrites which helps. He also did conferences with us on the two middle papers and provided decent feedback on what needed work. Overall, he was an okay professor.
Lots of writing. There was a writing assignment, usually along with a reading assignment, due every class.
Dr. Newburn was by far the best English teacher I've ever had. He takes attendance everyday at the beginning of class, but honestly his class was not unenjoyable to go to. He always reviews your papers before you submit them and his feedback is always helpful. He genuinely wants to see you become a better writer. Awesome class!
Pros: The way Dr. Newburn teaches this class is awesome. He always wants to make sure you have a clear understanding on the subjects you're writing papers about. He is genuinely interested in bettering your writing skills, and he shows that through the way he gives feedback on every assignment. Cons: He can be a bit of a tough grader at times.
He was a cool guy, but he was a hard professor. I am not a big reader, and I didn't realize how much reading you had to do in this class. There were always assignments to do, and Dr. Newburn is definitely a tough grader. Attendance is very important in this class. In class, all you do is discuss the reading you were assigned which becomes boring.
Professor Newburn is very nice, and he is passionate about the books he teaches. There is a lot of reading during this course, but you can get away with Sparknotes if you HAVE to. He goes into depth about the interpretations of each book. There are a lot of papers, and that is the majority of your grade, so make sure they are well written.
Dr. Newburn grades tough, but will give you really helpful feedback on everything you turn in. If you can write papers pretty easily, this is a good class to take. The homework is usually required reading from pages he uploads to Canvas and writing a rhetorical analysis over it. The class is business related and the projects are interesting.
Newburn is a great guy, and really knows his stuff. Show up to class, remember to do the readings, and the daily quizzes. You'll make an easy A. I took this for a Gen Ed, and it's really easy. The tests are written online with plenty of time before hand to finish. Make sure you mind your MLA format, though. He grades heavy for that!
Dr. Newburn is a very good professor. He is clear with what he expects from his students and grades by the rubric, if you follow it, you will make a good grade in the class. His public writing class is interesting and not difficult. I would take it again
Newburn has an absolutely insane attendance policy where if you miss more than 4 classes, each additional day counts for 1/3 of a letter grade off of your final grade. If youre easily offended or religious, dont take this class. Hes very vocal about his non-belief in religion and it shows in the text he assigns. He also talks a lot about sex.
Dr. Newburn is a tough grader but cares about what he does. Come to class, be prepared, and do plenty of research for the two major papers in the course. Also. make sure to abide by the formatting provided in the rubric.
This class was the hardest class I have taken. I do NOT recommend taking him if you are looking for a easy class. He assigns a huge work load. Tons of writing, quizzes, exams, and papers. He was nice in class just is very difficult work load.
Really nice guy and a pretty easy A
This prof is, in my opinion is very jaded. there's not really much option with freedom with what you're learning, what you're writing, and what you're discussing in class. he's really repetitive with what he has people read. It's really just not an enjoyable class. the books are really obscure, with some are classics (i.e. Pride and Prejudice).
Do not take this class if you don't have to. There is so much work between papers, tests, quizzes the list goes on. You have to read every single night before class because there's a quiz question on it class the next day. He's a tough grader. you spend the entire class sitting there talking about the reading from the night before and NOTHING else
The work in here is very repetitive and can seem like busy work at times. This class is interesting towards the beginning but becomes more repetitive and useless. Also, he can be difficult to read at times. He is VERY picky and looks for every little detail.
I took this class for my final English credit. If you are choosing between 255 and 295, take 295 if you want an easier class. However, I learned so much in this class. Newburn is a great teacher, but a tough grader. There is a lot of papers for this class, but it made me a better writer despite me hating it at the time.
He is pretty understanding and a good professor overall. I found the material he taught actually interesting. Also hes not nearly as tough or nit picky as most other English professors Ive had. Hes good about using class time effectively and leaving early if we can. A generous grader I would say
I like Dr. Newburn but his in class discussions are sometimes unnecessarily tense because he can sometimes expect specific answers to the questions he poses and his ability to lead discussion isn't always natural. I enjoyed his class, though, and think if you need the credit there are far far worse options.
Cares about his students. Also has some good jokes. Coursewise, there is a lot of reading, but the texts are really interesting. He is really good at explaining and interpreting the text in a way that is easy to understand.
Dr. Newburn's class was my way of getting in some much desired reading. As the semester goes on, I promise you will get a lot better at deep reading, and his lectures are there to help you catch those small details in the reading. reading responses take no more than 15 minutes. Quizzes are good grade boosters, and he offers paper revisions.
I really liked Dr. Newburn and I learned a lot in his class. The biggest takeaway was at least say something even if you don't think its right or the correct analyze just put it out there. He would rather you say something that might not be correct than to just sit there in silence. Definitely Recommend and would take again!
An understanding teacher when it comes to late grades. There are a lot of uncomfortable topics, making it awkward for students. When they don't answer he gets angry with them. The lectures aren't something special; however, you do learn how to rhetorically analyze texts better. Word count matters, even if it's just two away from the minimum.
I honestly don't know why Dr. Newburn doesn't have better reviews. He is approachable, helpful, and definitely wants to see his students succeed. His class definitely isn't easy, but he helped me learn a lot and I'm glad I took this course with him. Would definitely take a class with him in the future
There are much easier ENGL 102 instructors, I feel like he made it unnecessarily hard and was a stickler on citations and formatting, even on one-question homework assignments. I would pick someone else unless you don't mind really boring lectures. At least you can online shop during them
Lectures are kinda boring but he gives so much feeback on everything you turn in it makes up for it. Super approachable with any issue.
Dr. Newburn is a good professor overall. He is super approachable and gives a lot of great feedback. Make sure you're prepared and able to do thorough academic writing before you take this class. Some uncomfortable topics but interesting reads and definitely helped me understand literature more.
Lectures are extremely boring and slow because he only talks about the reading you were supposed to do outside of class. A stickler on citations and the proper way to write but gives good feedback and is willing to help if you ask. Attendance is graded so you must show up. Most of the class is reading from the textbook.
Dr. Newburn is very knowledgeable when it comes to the assigned readings we have over the course of the semester. He may be a pretty tough grader, but he gives incredible feedback, and it really helped me improve in the way that I write and analyze readings. Definitely not take his class if English isn't a subject that you're strong in though.
Newburn is a great professor and really cares about students. There is a lot of work in this class and he is a pretty tough grader, if you are not strong in English I advise against this class. You learn very valuable skills in paper writing and analyzing text.
Avoid taking Dr. Newburn's English 102 class if you can. I can't speak for other courses but his class is extremely boring and he mainly lectures/reads the textbook during every class. Attendance is pretty much mandatory even for a 9 am class. He is also a harsh grader. Took points off my essay for it looking "bland".
I enjoyed hearing Dr. Newburn's text analysis in lecture, but I was not a fan of his grading/the assignments he gave. This was American Lit 2 Honors, so I expected a challenge, but I think he was unnecessarily harsh in grading (I made an A in American Lit 1 Hon with a different prof). That being said, it's definitely a doable class
Dr. Newburn is a person that I think has good intentions, but I believe that a lot of the things that he assigns are useless. He assigns a lot of "busy work" that I believe has no purpose in furthing my knowledge. He isn't the worst professor in the department, but I would try to avoid him bc he assigns more work than any other of my other classes.
Newburn is def not as bad as people make him out to be. There are a lot of reading and hw assignments, but they are actually very useful in helping write papers. He gives great feedback on drafts, and while he is definitely a tough grader, if you take his edits and suggestions, you will usually do pretty good.
I actually did not mind Professor Newburn's class. He is a pretty tough grader but as long as you follow his criteria you should end up with a good grade. There are a couple of 1000 word essay's however the prompts he provides lets you talk about what you want to, which I enjoyed. His class actually helped me learn real life skills as well.
I was a little intimidated in the beginning since English isn't my strong suit. That quickly changed. If you show up and do the work you will be fine. Gives useful feedback on papers. Willing to help if you need it!
If you aren't paying attention in class he will call you out in front of everyone
Lots of reading, but he chooses good material (in my opinion) and is very passionate about them. Very few papers, but still many other required writing/comprehension assignments. Participate in discussions when you can.
One of the most unnecessary classes I have taken. The entire class is just based on doing analysis of various articles, advertisements and pictures, extremely boring and useless. He made the class unbearable and would get angry and call you out if you seemed uninterested. Assignments were unnecessarily long and graded tough.
Mr. Newburn is a great teacher to take if you like English and want to get better. He is very good at explaining topics. However his grading criteria is unclear and he takes points off for every single reason possible, some of the reasons being incredibly nitpicky and at times opinionated. If you are looking for an easy A find another professor.
This professor is horribly strict. He takes of massive chunks of score because you didn't tow the line. He very unforgiving, even if you are the only student who participates in class. Best avoid this guy and go for a better English 102 teacher.
Just drop if you want an easy A.
Newburn was a great professor. He has a very unique sense of humor, but you can tell he wants to connect to his students. As long as you participate and actually try on the papers and projects, he is pretty good at working with you on your grade. I would highly recommend him. There is a solid amount of work but definitely manageable.
Hard class for free A
Professor Newburn was sometimes very insufferable for several reasons, whether it was his long lectures that required your attention or he calls you out on it or his numerous busy work assignments. However, it is clear that he cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed, just he goes about it in an unorthodox and very blunt way.
I loved Dr. Newburn. His lectures were incredibly engaging, and it was clear how much he values literature. While the workload was quite heavy, I found myself eager to show up to my 8 am for the first time just to hear his interpretations of the endless (it was a lot) of short stories and poems we read and responded to outside of class.
Whether you like Dr. Newburn honestly depends on the student and class. English 232 is definitely more work than I was expecting, but it's never totally unreasonable. If you don't like reading, do NOT take this class. He's pretty chill but his class just kind of drags because it's easy to doze off if you didn't enjoy the readings for that day.
Dr. Newburn knows what he's talking about and his passion extends to all class meetings. He is so engaging no matter the reading. There is a lot to read but his interpretations were always so intriguing that you'll genuinely want to read the material. Would take again in a heartbeat, even if it's not a requirement.
Dr Newburn is incredibly nitpicky about formatting while giving few instructions. He does not care about the academic content of a paper but will give you an F if a couple MLA citations are wrong. Be prepared to put in too much work for a 100 level class.
