he's the worst professor ever! he doesnt care if you have time to do the hw or not. he doesnt give a crap about students. exams are hard.
Does not really care if his students pass. Rushes through material without much detail. He does give sufficient homework help during office hours, but that's pretty much it.
His exams are very hard, assigns a lot of work, and doesn't care if students pass. Rushes through lectures and doesn't get too much into detail to help students understand. expects you do learn most of the material on your own. WORTHLESS!
This guy throws a fat curve on the entire class. He gives a lot of points for homework, labs and quizzes. Final is really tough but if u did all the rest of the work, u can get a really low score on the final and still pass the class, even get a B or an A
Harry tom is a good lecture guy. Big curve for us cuz he got warned by ucr due to high curve 2 yrs ago. his test is hard but everyone in the class is a fool..cuz I am the top 9 of the class..I got A+
i dont know why you people below are ****ing about! i got 53% overall grade and got a B !! that's a C in the 2 Series. study from last year's midterm&final cuz there's not much different. STUDY THE QUIZES!! THE FINALS HAS AT LEAST 5 QUESTIONS FROM QUIZ!!
the midterm wasnt worth that much actually, and the curves are HUGE. do well on the homework and you'll get a passing grade. quizzes were tough though, and there's plenty of homework to do.
what in the world is he teaching the 2 series for?!? he's extremely hard, my homework is 20 pages long & each pg is packed, quizzes are not doable, the work i do for this class alone is more than all my other classes combined and he doesnt seem to
Hilarious! He thinks everyone should get perfect on the HW b/c he says you can copy from people and figure it out later! Brilliant! The guy knows he's hard. He's very thorough, although unaccessible for individual help. He gives huge curves for A's.
what in the world is he teaching the 2 series for?!? he's extremely hard, my homework is 20 pages long & each pg is packed, quizzes are not doable, the work i do for this class alone is more than all my other classes combined and he doesnt seem to
oh my...what to say about this, harry tom: edit* darn, i wanted to write an essay, but got stopped short. in general, i hated this class, i got NOTHING from lecture. basically had to teach myself.
Smart guy, but he was the worst physics professor I have ever had. Test averages were horribly low and he gives you hours of work to do. Sucks time out of your other classes. Fire him please!
I spent too much time for this class...and still get a bad grade. He left me speechless. Is there a God?
You study so much that you feel like your head will explode. He is nice, but thinks his teaching method is perfect. Do the homework and moderatley well on the quizzes and you'll pass b/c he curves like crazy.
by the best curve for a physics class ever, 25% A's, curved the final from 72 down to 40, his class is a lot of work, but if you do it and you learn you got urself the A you always wanted in physics
worst teacher ever. Don't bother going to class, just do the homework yourself and go to his office hours for "help" on the one's you don't get. He sucks!
this dude is the absolute worst teacher of all time. he is an insane teacher who cannot explain anything about physics to anyone with less than a PhD in physics. such a horrific teacher he had to curve a final to less than 30% just to pass enough people
Worst teacher ever. Gave tons of hw and his tests were insane!!! It took me about 6-8 hrs to do his hw. This teacher is crazy! If you get this teacher, better wait another quarter for another teacher!
Better get yourself a tutor, cuz this class is HARD. Tons of homework, difficult tests, crazy derivations...the list goes on. Only by the grace of the curve did I get an A.
Class was a lot of work, but if you do all of the work, you will get an A, the class has a really fat curve...Alot of people thought he was a bad teacher, but I actually thought he was pretty good...
Pretty hard prof. but he makes up for it on grading. Not that hard of grader (final grade).
It took him 2 months to turn our grades in. The whole class got them a few days before the new quarter started. I don't know what the other people have been smoking but this guy should be FIRED. He sucks, his hwks are 20 pg. long and he does not explain the material. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
There is one word that can describe this man @@@###**. He's test are stupid his homeworks are outrages. I mean he makes you REALLY hate physics. He should be fired, if not then I feel for all the other people who will have to go through his nonsense and stupidity.
Good instructor. If I passed, anyone can. He changed the homework because everyone was cheating and not learning anything. I personally thought mastering physics was much better with its holistic approach. Helpful at office hours. Really knows his stuff, although he is a bit arrogant. But overall a great guy, really cares about his studen
don't ever worried about getting to class on time, the professor sure doesn't
Yes,this is a difficult course but that doesn't mean its impossible. Prof Tom requires you to actually understand the problems. He is by far the hardest Physics prof but he knows his tests are difficult so he has a very good curve. If you do all the hmk and do well on quizzes and avg on exams. You should do fine. I got a B
Horrible. He doesn't teach anything. He demands you turn in work he never assigned. FIRE HIM. F-
He is a nice guy but I couldn't stand his teaching. The curve for this class is really low, cause if it wasn't, all of us would have failed. I couldn't understand what he was talking about for the most part, and the homework was murder. Run.....
UCR made an enormous mistake by allowing him to teach. Some people just aren't fit to instruct students, and this man is a prime example. Avoid him or get ready for an ulcer.
Not very good at teaching.
This teacher was miserable. super controlling, & his tests were ridiculously hard! doesnt explain concepts well. doesnt use computer screens efficiently. no demos, makes you sit where he wants, random clicker times with no warning when he stops. if your clicker doesnt work too bad for you! spends first 10 min of class making people sit closer:0(
He reminds me of Lloyd from Entourage, gay and flamboyant
AVOID!!!! Take Mills instead!!!!
Words of Wisdom: if you're confused which prof to take, then take the one who is reputed to be easy. Period. Just because a professor is inefficiently hard, and unkind doesn't mean he is a good teacher or lecturer. Harry Tom maybe a good researcher but is a mediocre lecturer and a pathetic professor.
Horrible professor! He never goes over any examples and just talks during the entire lecture that won't even help at all for his tests. Avoid him!
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!! He obviously knows physics but is completely unaware of how to teach it. And if you ask for clarity all he says is that it's in the book. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
He told everybody on the first day of class that his section is going to be very difficult and will require alot of work.Hes passionate about physics. He was clear, did demos, and was ALWAYS willing to help.If you dont put effort into it,youre screwed. His exams were really difficult.Long story short,if youre a procrastinator, youll never pass his class
Tom is a FANTASTIC professor. What's hard about his class is not his teaching (he's a fantastic teacher), but the fact that the pace, which is expected from a summer course. It's intensive. Go to SI, Office Hours, check out a solution manual from the library. Bottom line? If you can't handle the pace then take it during the year instead.
Undoubtedly the worst professor ive had to date. What he teaches in lecture is never covered in the exams. Exams are excruciatingly hard. Averages were about 20% on the exams. Pathetic excuse for a professor. Assigns homework late. He even didnt show up for one of the exams, having the students make it up for his mistake. Very irresponsible.
exam average was about 30% (really bad). Not very many examples in class. What pretty much took everyone down is the fact that he would deduct points for every wrong answer on the multiple choice part. Nice guy but wouldn't recommend.
I had him over the summer and he is not a good professor. The amount of HW he assigns is ridiculous, like 30 problems due after lecture at night. A professor to stay away from. AVOID!
Prof. Tom is nice, but worst professor by far Ive had. Unclear in lecture and speed through powerpoint to finish course plan. Midterm no formula sheet provided B/C "Formulas are so committed to memory" understandable if it was during the year/few formulas.Exams made for difficulty, extra info to confuse when you try to solve. Homework overwhelming.
Harry Tom's 41B class is an experience. He's awful at explaining concepts, but I think he knows that, and structures the class in such a way to avoid explaining things. This sounds bad, but it's surprisingly effective, and I learned a lot in the class. I probably wouldn't take a Harry-Tom style class again, but I'm glad to have experienced this one
I took this class in summer, and honestly the hardest class I have ever taken. The only reason I passed was because I went to SI and bought a prep book. His homework is extensive and painful. Material was interesting at times, but this class was overwhelming, even if you are a good student. I got an A+ but so hard to get.
Prof Tom' s class is an experience you won't forget. While it is difficult, you will learn a lot. He is passionate and enthusiast so you can always ask him questions (about anything). Overall, a really good professor.
The pacing and workload of Dr. Tom's class is brutal, but he means well. He is very passionate about what he lectures about and cares for his students. As an instructor, he will be working YOUR butt off and pushing your limits, but you will learn a lot in his class. Hands down, best professor I've ever had.
Strap yourselves in, it is a wild ride. Non traditional lectures, brutal homework, and the class is largely self taught. That being said, grading is pretty lenient and fair. The class is designed to be difficult for your growth, so do treat it as such and put in the effort. You will love Dr. Tom and his evil laugh, have fun (and use Chegg lol).
So, he is a great professor. Yet, you really have to bust you A. his class is a 3-hour problem-solving. So, you need to prepare for it by yourself. nonetheless, this guy will help you in every step of the way to make you a better student
Prof Tom is honestly the best teacher I've had. It's sad that he has bad rep because the class is significantly hard but he does give a warning about how difficult the class is. But it's for a good cause. You will learn under Prof. Tom. The amount of work is crazy insane. Just go to class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is not understanding and will ask for unpractical things such as tilting cameras down during the exams in ZOOM to see students hands (cant see your own screen where he is displaying the questions) Literally is setting students up to fail. Very dismissive of students concerns and lacks the ability to use lecture time well.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He straight up said that he expects us to do 10 hrs of homework per day. 7 questions would take 55 min to complete, and one question supposably had 3 pages of work. I was lucky enough to drop the class early but the people who stayed scored 20-30% on the tests. Theres a reason why over half the entire class dropped out.
Prof Tom is a horrible teacher! His exam did not reflect the content taught in class and he added a surprise exam 5 days before the final. He is extremely condescending and unhelpful to his students concerns. His avgs were 40% for the midterm and exams are free response. You will not learn anything and only gain stress. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
Worst professor I have taken at UCR. he was not respectful towards students and did not take into considering the student's mental state during this pandemic. He required unnecessary readings from the text which DID NOT reflect upon the exams. 23% of the class did not pass the class. Only take him if you want to have more stress in your life.
This man gave me a stomach ulcer from stress, please don't take him !!!!!!!! He's a horrible teacher and as much as you try and self study, you will not be successful on his exams. Good Luck.
I took his class in the summer and I literally devoted my soul to get an A+. His midterms and finals were some of the hardest tests I have ever taken. I still don't understand how I passed that class because we were never taught any of it.
(Summer) Expected students to do 3 homework assignments that take around 7+ hours of work per chapter which were nothing like exams. He is very condescending and laughs at students when they don't meet his expectation as he expects us to know advanced-level physics. Refused to curve even after avg on the midterm was 21%,passing is 40. RIP GPA and $
Harry Tom is the worst professor at UCR. If you are signed up for his course, get ready to experience a hell on earth you didnt know existed. He is very inconsiderate of his students and is very condescending about student concerns. Drop him if you can, avoid at all costs.
A ton of homework, some due before the lectures. Exams are free-response questions but manageable.
run away. dont take him. I had him for 3 days. the first quiz was impossible, he didn't even know how to solve the question. literally you will fail. he's an absolute shitty professor
I have an unique perspective of having COVID the entire last week of the 5 week course. The way the professor ran doing the test online was ridiculous. The entire time I felt like I couldn't understand work and never got points on the quizzes. The work is hard but the curve is huge and talking with him I really got the sense he wanted us to learn.
Amazing Professor. Very knowledgeable. Not sure why people hate him so much. He shows great enthusiasm for his job and shows that he loves it. Goes into great detail when answering questions. Homework every day, 2 chapters weekly, spent about 45 hours/week just on this class. Would not take class again time consuming Class: 6.5/10 Professor:9.5/10
So much reading, but it really does help to read especially before the lecture because he barely lectures anyway so you really are teaching yourself.
He makes you learn the all the material by yourself just leaving class time to clear up details and work on practice problems. This isn't the worst as it is semi-manageable and material does seem to make sense however the weekly quizzes were pretty difficult. There was also daily homework that took many hours to complete. I see the vision..but no
Even though the course load might appear really heavy, with lots of homework, hard quizzes and a tough final, it is the most efficient way to learn. We would do a lot of practice problems in class so that we could be able to learn by ourselves. If you love doing physics, I would definitely recommend taking this class.
only had two classes last quarter but I was dying. LOTS of homework. LOTS of reading. almost spent my entire last quarter in the lab room doing mastering physics. this class was a struggle, but its worth it for physics majors cause i learned a lot. his laugh is very entertaining. 1 Quiz/week, no midterm, 50% final.
He expects us to learn through the textbook alone and then "explains" things in lecture, but really just rambles for 3 hours straight. Usually goes 10-15 minutes over. Wants us to give 200% of our time to physics and has extremely high expectations. This course is only 5 weeks. Calm down
Do not take physics with Mr. Tom. He is very unreasonable. He takes two hours to explain one problem and expects the students to do the problems in 15 minutes. The homework is so hard and take hours of your time. The grades are never current in canvas. you never know where you stand. Read the Room Mr. Tom. What a disservice to the students.
Mr Harry gives minutes for the classroom poll and proceeds to ask "why was there no responses" He does not give enough time for the poll or the quizzes. If students are not answering questions on the poll or quizzes, USE A DIFFERENT STRATEGY professor Tom! You are not giving students enough time to think. Do you care enough to make a change???????
Professor Tom this course is for NON physics majors. Keep that in mind when preparing for this class. Class needS improvement. Please take a lesson from Professor Ward Beyermann. He ran his class fairly, just the right amount of homework, canvas was organized and clear. These are all the things you lack!!! clarity and fairness.
Condensed courses are expected to have much of the information cut out due to lack of time. Rather than teaching what we need to know, Prof Tom expects us to already be experts in every facet of every subject adjacent to physics so we can learn all the material ourselves. Claims it's not his job to teach us the material.
15 minutes for 4 problems on the quiz, not enough time. The entire class is failing. This class is a complete Waste of time and energy. The professor is so clueless, does not care and carries, when every single student is completely checked out, platyng videos games, shopping, texting, or on chegg cheating. This guy need to retire!
This professor is very unrealistic. Too much material in little time. Needs to bring it down a notch, for the students who are not physics majors. This class is forced upon us by the university, the physics department would suffer if physics was not a requirement for all science majors. There are not that many physics majors, the content is hard.
Canvas is never up to date, students do not know where they stand. The amount of Homework is this class is unreal and only worth 10% of your grade, the most unreasonable, unfair, unrealistic professor I have ever had in my four years of college. This professor obviously has Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), it's time to retire.
Note to Professor, Post all the modules and lecture notes prior to class, so students can prepare and work ahead. Keep students grades up to date in canvas, so they know their progress. Each HW assignment takes up to 6 hours. Not every student has chegg. Give more points for the HW. Give students longer on the quizzes, rather than 15 minutes.
Doesn't post lectures until much later after class. Requires students to stay ahead but the only resource to stay ahead is the textbook, but we're too busy working on 3+ hours of homework to even read. Homework, discussion questions, and quiz questions are impossible. No idea how anyone's gonna pass. Final is 60% of our grade. Pray for us
I went to three different tutors and none of them were able to help with the Homework or the discussion problems. These tutors have physics degrees, they were puzzled why the professor would give these types of problems to the 2 series students. The professor expects students to do the problems, but the tutors at UCR are not able to solve them.
Um. Just save yourself the stress. If you're up for a challenge then nothing is stopping you. Difficult quizzes, difficult homework. Final is all free response and worth 100% of your grade. Maybe my experience was not great bc I took the five week summer session, however the lectures are still hard to follow. Doesn't give time to answer polls.
60% final 40% homework, discussion, poll, etc. very easy to pass the class but the structure of the class makes it impossible to get a good grade. he expects hours of studying outside of class and does not give solutions to any class questions. free response final as well which is expected to take all 3 hours. no equation sheet provided.
I don't recommend taking this class with Professor Tom, especially in the summer. He seems to forget that he is supposed to be teaching the content. Lectures are just a big summary of the textbook chapter with MANY tangents. I became discouraged quickly by this teaching style of tedious homework, study hours, and fast quizzes/polls.
I have no idea how I'm gonna pass. Harry Tom is by far the worst professor I've ever had. Ever. I compared my friends' notes from 2B with a different professor and Harry Tom does the same problems as the other professor but at a much much higher difficulty. He holds us to this ungodly and unattainable standard and we're all failing because of it.
This professor is not normal. Class is so disengaged, very little opportunity to pass this course. Not sure why the physics department continues to allow him to teach. Several students have complained against him. Should have taken this course with another professor that cares for the students. He wants to see us fail.
Super easy class would recommend taking it especially over the summer.
This professor was the worst professor I ever had. He has no regard for his students & how hard he made this course. He never mentioned that the final was going to be frq until the third week when it was too late to drop. He doesn't finish the problems & doesn't explain well. Pls never ever take this professor.
The prof doesn't explain well, reads off of his slides, and talks about a lot of unnecessary things. He said, "If u don't understand anything, it's up to u how u would understand them" When he does a problem he leaves in the middle telling us to finish it by ourselves. DON'T TAKE HIM EVEN IF HE IS UR LAST OPTION. He'll set you up for failure.
God awful. Unrealistic expectations for 5 wk general phys class. Participation credit only given for correct answers and barely gave any time during polls/quizzes. I never knew what was going on even after reading the book. It's easy to check out with the way he rambles for 3 hrs. 60% final, no equation sheet, all frq with multiple parts in each q
Prepare to study at least 6 hours a day. If you are a regular in the 41 room, you will make close friends! You will hate this professor if you hate hard work and learning. He's tough but he actually cares that you learn. I remember even the day after his lab burned down, he still came to class and helped us with problems! That's dedication!
By far the hardest class I've taken—failed due to poor time management, but it was also my favorite. Though listed as 8 units, the workload felt like 12. Tom's high standards push you to work hard. I cried over this class, lost sleep, but it made me a better student. It's brutal yet rewarding, and Tom truly cares about your success.
I took this class for a week in the summer, and it was by far one of the hardest weeks I have ever had academically. The lectures are not bad, he actually explains concepts in a way that helps you understand them, but the math he expects you to do is meant for engineering students, not for life science. It's impossible over the summer.
Avoid at all costs. This class has been the most unpleasant and unnecessarily difficult course at UCR. Lengthy homework assignments, impossible quizzes at the beginning of each lecture, discussion problems that even the TAs don't understand, no midterm, and a final with no formula sheet, no practice finals, and extremely difficult questions.
