His accent is hard at first but you will get used to it. class is boring for the most part but its very easy if you need a good grade. hey, for a gen ed its better than philosophy.
GREAT JEARB
This guy is one of the worst teacher's I've ever had. God only knows how he retains his employments at the University of Connecticut. His lectures are boring, and worst of all, his lecture notes, upon which the tests are based, are complete gibberish. He's terrible at communicating his ideas.
hard to understand. posted notes online though, so I stopped going to class and just read those, got a b+
I never went to class OR discussion. I just read the book that he wrote before the exam and got an A. super easy to take as a gened rather than phil or something.
This is not the easy gen ed that you might think it is! His book is horribly difficult to understand, and there is no glossary! Reading assignments are long and painful, lectures are boring and useless, and discussion is just a waste of time. I do not recommend this class, it is actually rather difficult, and so boring!!! Absolutely useless!
The absolute worst teahcer I ever had in college. Meaningless and worthless lectures, he puts on average 15 people to sleep every lecture, stay away from his class. I'm ashamed my tuition money goes towards his salary.
A terrible teacher and a terrible subject but is a very easy A with 8 point curves on almost every exam and 5 bonus points added to the your semester average
Some of the other people said that his class is difficult but don't believe it for one second. His class was the easiest A I have ever gotten and I had (and still have) no interest in linguistics. He gives you 1% toward your final grade for each assignment you complete and he gives 10 assignments!!!!!! Not a bad trade off if you do the extra work.
Interesting at times with jokes and whatnot... as mentioned before his accent doesn't interfere with the lectures. Go to class, take notes, go to the discussion, and study the night before exams and get an A. Its not too much work in order to get a good grade in the class
Very knowledgeable guy. Exams are multiple choice and kind of confusing, so you definitely need to study. He curves all exams so the class average is a B, and he gives you 5 extra points on your final grade if you do the homework they give you in discussion. Difficult material, but easy to get a B because of all the extra points you can get.
Use powerpoints in class and he won't put those slides to Web so you have to attend class. Study Guides provided for exams. A great curve to a B for whole class. Exams are in multiple choices with 3 choices each. Just study lecture notes, do the study guides and do the homework and you can get an A.
I found this class to be boring, but really easy. The tests are usually curved and just for doing all 10 easy homework assignments in discussion you get 5% added to your final grade.
Do not buy the books, they are written by him and a waste of money (or get them used online). The lectures are extremely dull and so is everything he has written. You will need to study to get a good grade and I advise you to find another professor if you want an easy A
Great professor. The material was also very interesting and helped me to understand a lot about language! A must take general education course. Also, you are pretty much guaranteed an A if you put the effort in.
Very weird class/prof. Makes you buy 2 texts and 1 big book of slides/practice probs all written by HIM. First exam was wicked hard (material apparently only found in the book), but had an 11 point curve because he wants the class average to be a B. I got As on the other two exams and never went to lecture. 5 bonus points if you do all 10 HWs.
Has an awesome accent, and really knows his stuff. If you've never been exposed to the field of linguistics, some of this stuff is a bit hard to wrap your head around. NEED to attend lecture, no slides/notes online. Discussion is useless, but there's extra credit HW that has to be turned in during disc. Go to lecture, do the reading, exams are easy
A nice guy who teaches a rather boring subject. Most stuff in this class is common sense, but you have to do the reading, which is all posted online. All you have to buy is the book of slides. He tries to make things interesting. Don't worry if you miss a lecture, but go to discussion.
his exams are super easy if you study for them. the practice exam and study guides are so helpful. he is a great teacher and if you do all the homeworks you get an extra 5% added to your grade. plus there's a bonus exam that will replace your lowest exam grade if you choose to take it. awesome class. dont even hafta really go. TAKE LING 1010 w/ HIM
Very cool and easy teacher. Tests are pretty simple if you go to the discussions. Don't really even have to go to class since he makes you buy a manual with all the slides before the year. Easy gen ed.
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Easy A! Three tests (two tests and one final, not cumulative). Bonus exam replaces lowest test (cumulative). Do all 10 homeworks and get 5% added to your total test average. Interesting class, and a funny guy. He just is a down to earth guy. It's seriously impossible not to get an A in this class. Attend discussion!
he's a great professor, the class was an easy A. the exams were easy if you went to lecture, and discussion helped clarify information, my T.A. was so nice and helpful. definitely take this class with him if you're considering taking a gen ed.
A great teacher. Offers a bonus exam to replace either the midterm or final. Homework gives you five points extra credit, and Discussion is helpful but has no attendance. A great gen-ed.
An easy gen ed; 5 extra bonus points are added onto your final grade if you do all 10 homework assignments. There are 3 exams, and a bonus exam is offered to replace your lowest exam score. Discussion is not mandatory but can be very helpful.
Easy class although the multiple choice test questions can be tricky, overall not bad. Essentially no work except for the night before the exams.
Good gen ed. Prof has an accent, but he's understandable, though pretty boring. His textbook is TERRIBLE. Tests completely multiple choice, and there's a bonus exam to replace a previous bad exam grade.
This class is a good Gen Ed. The exams can be a little tricky but he curves the first exam because he believes everyone should have a B average. There is a bonus final, and it really does help your grade in the end. He also adds an extra 5 point to your final grade if you do the homework. It's a good class.
Very Easy class and I would recommend for an easy gen ed. He gave short homework assignments that were due in discussion every week. There were a total of four multiple choice exams and only three were counted.
This class takes literally no work. You don't really need to do the readings but if he always puts 1-2 questions on the exam that were in the readings but not in lecture so if you want to get those right then read. I didn't read, did the homeworks in 5 minutes before discussion, studied the night before and pulled off an A with the extra credit.
Very interested and enthusiastic about Linguistics, he seems to really know what he's talking about. Used a lot of charts and videos which helped since sometimes the subjects were a bit dull and he had a tendency to go off on tangents. You can still do well in the class without the online readings. If you do the work you will get an A
Took this as an easy gen ed class, did the homework each week and barely showed up to lectures. Easy A in my opinion, just a bit boring and dull, the manual and his lectures are pretty much the same so pick the manual or pick the lectures but you definitely don't need both
Great professor! Textbook required was just of his slides he would cover during class. Found very interesting for a gen ed class.
Easiest, most pointless class at uconn. If you put an ounce of effort, you'll get an A but even studying a few hours before tests is hard imo lol because of how boring the material is. This being said, I can only imagine how much worse philosophy is(either required for my major) so I'm sticking it out though getting a good nap during lectures.
Learned absolutely nothing, thankfully I already took other linguistics classes and knew what was going on.I only learned by teaching myself in order to complete the ridiculous amount of assignments he gave us. He was condescending as well. only good things was that he was lenient about grading and getting the assignments on time and no textbook
Easiest gen ed at UCONN. Not sure why I went to the lecture all the time. I learned the most in my discussion. Easy A.
This class was so boring!I would try my hardest to go but I often ended up not listening when I do. Eventually I just did not go. Test are easy. You don't need to study much to get a B. There is a bonus opportunity with homework and a bonus addition quiz you can take.
This class is kind of hard to follow because of how boring it is, so you pretty much have to just reteach yourself the material while studying for the test. However, studying may take you a little over an hour and everything you need to know he puts on the practice tests and is very straight forward and simple. TAs confusing but give you extra pts
Harry was a a great professor. He seems really cultured and knowledgeable. In addition, he is well-respected in the field of linguistics. Not to mention his accent is so hot <33333
Okay so the class is really easy. I'd say the textbook isn't necessary but eventually it can be a really good way to review for tests. Make sure you do all the Homework's so you get extra points tacked onto your final grade. His lectures are pointless and boring. You really don't have to attend the class to succeed. Go to discussion though
Such an awesome prof. Have to go to class and pay attention to do well. You can skip discussion but it's not recommended since they go over important practice tests and give out bonus homework that are added to your final grade. Wonderful gen-ed. Teacher is so passionate in what he teaches and tries to make the class as interesting as he can
Chill dude, easy class. Never really went to lecture. Discussion can be useful but not mandatory either. Honestly, if you just read his lecture slides and do his study guide the night before the tests you will do well. Highly recommended as a gen ed class.
He is a good professor. He is mono toned and has an accent but he really tries. I rarely went to lectures, but always attended the diss since they were more helpful. Crammed for exams the night before just by reading the slides and got an A. His online txts are terrible though, so many grammatical mistakes! So don't even bother reading them.
the easiest class i've ever taken. read the manual with the slides to study for exams, don't bother reading the online textbook. drops your lowest exam grade, adds an extra exam for bonus points, and adds 5 extra pts to your term avg if you do all the hw. going to lecture isn't necessary but pay attention in discussion
going to lecture was a complete waste of time and I never read the book. You go over (and learn) everything important in discussion. Easy a if you put the tiniest bit of effort into it
I would recommend this class as an easy GenEd. He gives very long online reading assignments, however, you really just need to skim them over and take out the important facts. He is passionate about what he teaches! Overall, very clear about what will be on the exam.
Took this class online. Horrible. Heard it was an easy A, but it is WAY too hard for an "easy A." The lectures barely made sense. He never responded in an adequate amount of time, especially on exam days.
The teacher is very nice and he responds to discussions fairly quickly. The Matereal is actually very difficult to understand because its hard and his notes weren't encompassing enough i feel. But 80% of the class is 4 exams and i got 100's on 3and an 80 on 1 because you can use the notes and google actually helped most. my total was 101 easy A.
Easiest class I've ever taken at UConn, never read the textbook only studied the slides for an hour or 2 before exam got A's on all. Lecture not necessary but do go to discussion. He is a very easy grader. The class can be quite boring but worth it for the minimum work put in to get an easy A.
This class is not an easy A. Its not extraneously difficult but its actually just like most other classes- the average for exams is an 80 and if you do only study the slides the day before an exam you'll fail. The exams themselves are tricky and alot of the work is done outside the class.
Van Der Hulst is a nice guy but going to lecture physically pained me. It is insanely boring and irrelevant, honestly you don't have to go.. With that being said, the exams are not super easy. I got 85 on all of them, but still got an A in the class because of HW and extra credit. And don't buy his dumb manual!! It is his slides printed on a paget
Went to a few lectures and they were really boring and useless. All he does is read over his slides in his manual book. Exams are not as easy as you think. Got an A- in the class by Making sure to read the chapters of his online textbooks that he posts for the exams and understand them thoroughly. Don't just read Manual. Do the extra credits.
Easy online class. 4 exams make up 80% of your grade and the last 20% are discussionassignments. The exams are easy open-ended questions - answers are directly in lecture. The discussionassignments are pretty easy too and he does not grade on correctness. The reading he assigns is unnecessary. The material was tricky, but still an easy A.
If you show up and do what you're supposed to do this class is not hard! Discussion is the most helpful part of class because it reinforces everything he says in lecture. I bought the book to have his slides and to take notes with and studied off of that and managed to do well. The first exam is the hardest, but that's okay! They get easier!
Although the class is known as the "easy A" gen ed course, it's definitely not as easy as expected. I recommend going to class and discussion because they really helped me understand the material. However, don't buy the manual (literally just his slides printed) unless you aren't going to class. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!! First exam was the hardest.
Compared to other online classes, this one was a breeze. If you discussion posts or assignments are completely wrong, he will still give you full credit for trying. There are 4 exams worth 20 points each, answers are from the lectures! He also provides a 5 point extra credit at the end of the class so that you can boost your grade! Read feedback!
LOVED the way he teaches. He uses his own book and has you annotate chapters of it and critique what he says in it. If your responses are off track, he gives great feedback about where you went wrong. The exams were very straightforward so if you did the reading you do well on exams. Gave a 5 point extra credit assignment at the end of the course.
If you need an easy A and a gen ed, then take this class, but not if you want to be horrified at this professor's inadequacy. His lecturing style is awful as he throws up a slide and rambles about it for several minutes, never fully covering his points or properly supporting his argument. Overall the class is a joke, would not recommend.
Reading assignments daily with a tons of homework(two page single space summary and discussion posts). The homework gets easier and less time consuming once your familiar with it. Tests are alright, be sure to used the explanations on the book or he might take points off. He is a nice professor that really cares about linguistic.
Harry is my FAV!!! He makes so many lowkey jokes but no one laughs because they are already asleep from the lecture. Also the class is only based on the lectures which can get really boring and repetitive fast. The first exam is hard but there's a lot of extra credit. I ended with over 100 average because of this and barely studying .
The class is extremely hard!!!!! DO NOT TAKE IT unless you want a grade bellow B. Try to take the other professor's LING 1010. I am taking it because my friends told me it was an easy A course. However, they meant the other professor who is teaching LING 1010 is easy to get an A. The exam is hard and has too many contents to be remember.
Hard exam. Tough grades.
The exam took you very long time to prepare and you may still get a bad grade. Lecture was boring and not useful for preparing the exam. As a gen Ed, it was too difficult. THE EASY LING 1010 COURSE IS NOT THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!! Harry Van Der Hulst is a fun and nice guy. But my only suggestion is avoiding his class.
I enjoyed Ling1010 with him and thought that the class was easy and interesting. The only exams are 2 midterms, a final, and a bonus exam that can replace your lowest exam score. There are also quizzes every week in discussion that count as extra credit. As long as you go to lectures and follow along with the slide printouts, you'll be fine.
He lectures as if he's having a conversation about Linguistics to someone who already has a background on it. Worst professor in terms of teaching you anything. You can take up to 4 exams with and he chooses the average of the 3 highest scores and that's your grade plus up to 8 points of EC. It requires some effort to get an A, but it's doable.
His lectures are incredibly dry, and it's not just because of the content. He is incredibly knowledgeable in his field but that causes him to go off-track constantly. You are graded on basically only the three exams, but he does allow you to take a bonus cumulative exam at the end that can replace your worst exam score.
I have no interest in Linguistics and only took it as a Gen Ed to get an A. Can't comment on the large lecture but for the honors section, it was so easy to get an A if you attended every lecture. Gives up to 5 points to your FINAL GRADE if you write weekly reflections. Take home exams and finals. Like come on, what more do you need with a Gen Ed?
Took the honors section of this class and it was the most boring 2.5 hours of my life but at least it was only once a week. He talks a lot and the majority of the class is zoned out. At least the class is easy. Theres 3 exams and 5 optional bonus points added to your final grade if you write reflections on the textbook readings.
This class was very easy in my opinion. There are only 3 tests, and a bonus exam that can replace you lowest test score. Each week in discussion there are 2 question quizzes which can earn you up 5 EC points on your final grade. Lectures are sometimes dry but the content is still interesting. Good professor that wants you to get good grades
One of the worst professors I have ever had. The material he teaches is very simple and easy to understand, but the way he teaches it makes it very difficult to understand and convoluted. You can easily tell that he tries to make the material more complex in order to create a perception that linguistics is a very "sophisticated" topic.
Not the best professor, the lecture is pretty boring, most of the materials are common sense stuff. But you gotta defined a lot of terms.
He was very boring, but the class was quite easy. He definitely knows a lot about linguistics. Your entire grade is 3 of your 4 best tests, plus an extra 8% if you do the bonus quizzes and experiments, so it really is not hard to get a good grade. Take this for an easy gen ed.
I took this class online during May term and it was so much work. Every day we had chapters to read, summaries to write, and discussion boards to participate in so you have to stay on top of your work. It is a lot to do but it is quick and a good way to get some credits out of the way. Overall, a good class just be prepared to work.
I only took this course online, and it was pretty okay. The recorded video lectures were nice because I could watch them on my own time and the material was presented relatively clearly. The material was kind of more confusing than expected for a gen ed course, but it got easier as the semester went on. The content was interesting
Never watched a single lecture and still did good on exams. Review the powerpoints and take this for an easy gen ed.
LING 1010 is super easy just watch the lectures and go to discussion and you will get an A. The grades are an average of 3 exams and if you do bad there's an optional final that replaces it. Also the quizzes are optional and can get you up to 5 points of extra credit. If you did well in PSYC1100 you'll do just as fine here, especially online.
This class was the easiest gen ed I've ever taken. He gives you everything you need to do well on exams. There was no required textbook reading, and all I did to prepare for exams was go over the slides a couple of times and fill out the study guide. I could also tell that he and my TA really wanted students to do well.
Lectures drag, dreaded watching them, put them on 1.5x and read the slides. I never watched the lectures until 1-2 days before an exam. Most exam questions come right from the slides, some questions are easy things he talks about. He very obviously loves linguistics, would probably be a better class in person
He is an okay professor but his course is easy. Your grade is based on the average of 3 exams. One exam can be replaced with an optional exam if you do poorly. There are weekly discussion sections where you can get up to 5 extra credit points total. The professor shares a lot of extra info, so focus on the study guide so you don't feel overwhelmed
The professor was great and explained things very nicely during lectures. It's an asynchronous class though and meetings are done by TAs. Lots of reading for this class and only a few quizzes so you have to do well on the exams in order to get a good grade.
Took this during covid and as long as you go over the powerpoints and skim through the textbook you will be good. I suggest reading the textbook because it makes the tests much easier but you really do not have to as long as you have notes from the powerpoints.
super easy class, i read the textbook at the beginning but stopped bc it was unnecessary. pretty easy material, exams are open book and open note (he wrote the textbook btw so it's free) there were weekly quizzes, but they were pretty easy too. pay decent attention in class and you'll do fine
Took the class during the 3 week May session and the work was pretty fair, easy exams and simple summaries on the chapters each day. He was a really easy grader and as long as you did what he asked, you'd get full credit. I liked the way the textbook was laid out and it was easy to remember the important aspects, overall solid class!!
attended every lecture and still failed the midterm. he teaches as if he is talking to one of his colleagues. studied off of the study guide that he provided, along with his notes, and the exam ended up having completely different things on it. he also does not curve exams. I do not recommend taking this course with this professor.
Prof. Van der Hulst is very knowledgeable about lingustics. Sometimes the lectures can be a bit redundant but overall I did learn a lot in this class. It was a gen ed for me although there were certainly a decent amount of topics that I found interesting. Take this as a gen ed if you need it
Took this class in the same semester as calculus, physics, and chemistry, etc..... ling 1010 was BY FAR much harder for me than all the other stem classes. Very boring lectures and exceedingly hard to follow. Your whole grade is based on 3 exams, with the possibility of 1 makeup. If you take this class, take it with another professor.
Absolutely the worst class I've ever taken. I should of done Pass/Fail when I could, grade is based off of 3 exams, like another commentor said, exams are nothing like review, my TA doesn't even do review, only 5 extra credit pts and one "makeup" cumulative exam. Lectures are so boring you'll fall asleep at noon.
There is absolutely no need to go to lecture for this class. Buy the text book for $20, look it over and get an A. Prof. Van Der Hulst loves to hear himself talk and reads off the slides when he's not going on a tangent. No devices are allowed in class, which I was personally not a fan of (I take computer notes), so keep that in mind.
I am not the best learner when it comes to lectures so I had a lot of trouble with this class. You only have 3 grades in the class and its just the 3 exams, he gives you the opportunity to take 4 and he takes the best 3 grades out of them. As long as you study hard before an exam you will do fine and you should probably attend the discussions.
The lectures are boring, most people don't really go, but it definitely helps to go. There is up to 5 points of extra credit offered through your discussion section which is nice. Overall, he's very friendly and is enthusiastic/passionate about what he's teaching. Your grade IS based only off of your 3 exams, but theres a makeup one offered too.
i've read some comments about this class itself being difficult, it's not. dr. van der hulst's lectures are very dry and hard to sit through, though. i often caught myself falling asleep during lecture or having trouble staying awake. the exam questions are directly from his slides though, so if you study you'll be fine. go to discussion!
4 exams, drops the lowest one. exams are 40 multiple choice. the first one is bad, the other 3 are fair, but still kind of hard to get an A unless you study hard. dont need to go to lectures, just make sure you read and retain everything in the course manual. go to discussions, you get a weekly quiz which is extra credit added to final grade.
The lectures were extremely boring and dry. I taught myself most of the course material. You definitely have to study and there is a lot of material to memorize. The first two exams were closed notes, the final and makeup exam were open notes, which saved my grade.
Harry is a very smart and good person, but his lectures are very boring. You need a book with all of his notes (already publishes) and as long as you study those notes, you will be fine. In discussion, you can earn up to 5 extra points to average based on "bonus quizzes" (10 per semester, each with .5 in bonus). Easy A, just too boring for me
easy class in respect to the lack of homework, but be prepared because the lectures can be very boring. because it is an introductory linguistics class, expect a weird mix of students. the only thing that was difficult was the exams, of which there were 3. people often underestimate the difficulty of the exams and many do poorly on the first exam.
LING 1010 is probably one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Lectures can get really boring, but I still attended as it forced me to dedicate time to the subject. Exams are really easy as long as you study and understand everything from his slides. Attend every discussion section as you can get 5 extra credit points!
the class consists of 3 exams and a makeup exam; the first two were closed notes and in person and are harder than the study guide, and the final and makeup exam are open notes, which basically saved my grade. the lectures are really boring and kinda pointless, but the discussion allows up to 5 points of extra credit. the class sucks tho!!!
No electronics in class. (Like not even a laptop to take notes) made us buy a book that was all his slides, could have gotten away with just using a notebook. Lectures are very boring (but that comes with the material). He has a cool accent, is very nice, you can tell he loves the subject. Theres a comment here about his testing which is accurate.
At the end of the day, your grade is really determined by how much perseverance you have. The content is not overly confusing and will make sense upon spending time studying/thinking about it. Every test question only has three answers and comes from the lectures/powerpoints. It was frequently a battle to stay awake during class/discussion.
While he was very lecture heavy, I found his lectures to always be interesting. He makes you buy this manual that you take notes in, but you don't actually need it if you are a person who likes writing their own notes in a notebook. You definitely need to study for exams, but they are straightforward if you do. Low stress and easy if you study.
Ling is an easy class, the topic is just boring. Harry cares a lot about what hes teaching but likes to go off topic. The only homework is a packback once a week, and we have one midterm and one final. The tests are open book. Lectures are optional too. Just boring material, he is funny though.
Harry is a cool teacher. For LING1010, attendance didn't really matter because he didn't take attendance (very large class size). But there would be in-class polls that you'd have to answer so if you missed class, you'd miss the polls and miss out on points. There was no textbook, but we used PackBack online which is like an online discussion board.
This was a very easy Gen Ed. The topic is very interesting, but he does tend to ramble and get off topic. He cares about what he teaches and does not make the class more difficult than it needs to be. Exams come right from lecture notes.
You have to buy a $40 website for weekly HW and in-class questions you have to answer every lecture. He is a nice guy and cares a lot about the topic but it was all kind of nonsense and never got below surface level. I liked him and it was an easy class but it was a drag to go every day and pretend like it made sense.
I had Professor Van Der Hulst for LING 1010. It's a super easy course. Not much "homework" to do in class. Every week we had to post a discussion question and answer two others, which was very simple. You need to go to class or watch it online to be able to the in-class discussion polls that kinda count for attendance.
So hard to pay attention in. He uses packback for polls and weekly discussion which adds into your points and then a midterm and a final which makes your grade. This class has a pointless discussion section that if you don't attend affects your packback score. Also I finished the class with a 79.6, could've simply rounded it to an 80.
Grades were a mess all semester. Easy class, guy rambles a lot and no one listens to his lectures (all posted online) but he has mandatory polls that affect your grade every class so it's basically mandatory. Exams were surprisingly really easy. He makes things so complicated for no reason. Wouldn't take again, but was okay for most of it.
The lectures were very boring and he just read through the slides that were posted but you have to go to answer the packback polls. The only homework was the packback discussion questions once a week which were easy and there were only 2 exams which were both open note. This class was easy but so boring.
Harry was a chill guy. We only took two test and did packback for a grade so it was super easy. You dont have to go if you know someone in the class.
Professor Van Der Hulst is an excellent professor and you can tell that he really enjoys what he teaches. Lectures are technically mandatory because there are 2 in-class polls that are administered during the lecture time. For homework, a discussion board is due every Wednesday where you have to ask a question and answer two other questions.
This class was over all easy, the exams were all online and open book. It is lecture heavy, and they can be confusing and unorganized. Overall, its an easy A.
I enjoyed LING 1010 as well as professor van der hulst. He is responsive to emails, available before/after class, and kind. Heavy accent but doesn't affect anything really. Attendance is mandatory and there is weekly homework but very easy just time consuming. Only 2 exams that were take home/online with no lockdown browser. Course is interesting.
Van Der Hulst was not a bad professor honestly. The work was hard and often confusing but he was a somewhat nice guy, though not very approachable or personable. There was a lot of homework and it was hard to keep track at times, so it became really easy to fall behind. You have to work extremely hard in order to do well in this class.
imagine making students buy your note book for a class... i got by without it. the grade is made up of 3 exams so if youre a good test taker its a low stress class
Van Der Hulst is passionated about Linguistics, but is very boring in the way he presents his information. 3 basic exams and discussion section. There are easier and more interesting gen eds to take
Don't take ling2010q with this guy because for a q course it is absolutely not worth it. The class in general can be easy if you can catch on and remember every little tiny detail from the chapters he wrote but it still is not a deal breaker. Take a different q course, this class is not worth your time. Also he sucks at teaching.
I had mixed feelings about this class & professor. He's funny sometimes, but class is so lecture heavy it's easy to end up doing your own thing and not pay attention. He does in-class polls, but you can do them online from anywhere. I understand it's a very large class size but it would be fun to be more interactive with students.
He is a horrible lecturer, at nearly the end of the semester I still don't feel like I have learned anything. He seems to like the content and is nice enough but he is just not good at teaching. There are in-class polls that you have to show up for and weekly discussion posts as homework and 3 exams. You'll get a good grade if you do the work.
Would never take a class with him again. His lectures are very boring, dry, and sometimes don't even make sense. He goes off on tangents all the time and his lecture slides are so wordy, you can rarely write down notes fast enough or clear enough to understand. Plus, he made us buy the textbook HE WROTE for $60
Really boring class. Reads off of slides that he posts online. In class polls but made it so you have to be in class to see the possible answers. Weekly discussion posts, not hard but you have to buy the website for $80. He also makes you buy his book that he wrote, but I found it online for free. 2 midterms and a final. Open note but confusing.
This class consists of 3 PackBack polls (must be present to do) per class and 1 poll during the discussion section (be present). There are weekly PackBack post which are responses and 1 question based on the weeks chapter. Lastly, 3 exams. 1st & 2nd exam are 12.5% each, last is 20%. You can get around the class w/o reading the book....
Online homework for credit and tests are online as well. You have to go to lecture to answer the polls that are for credit because he makes the answers hidden. You can tell he is more into his research than teaching but that being said he has a lot of useful information but he doesn't present it in the best way.
He is not great at lecturing but his exams are EASY. Exams are open note so take detailed notes in class from his slides. Lectures are boring but you have to attend to be able to answer in class polls. 3 polls per class and 1 in discussion. Usually easy questions, don't worry if you get a couple wrong. You can get like 20 wrong and still get an A.
Must go to class to complete in class only assignments. Lectures tend to ramble and not make a ton of sense at times. All tests are online. Textbook is his own book that he wrote too so it's a little odd.
Easiest A you will ever receive. 67/100 points just from attending class and doing the easiest homework ever. The rest comes from 3 exams that are online, no lock down browser. If you need an easy elective, TAKE THIS CLASS, sit in the back and just do other work.
Not really Intro level, lots and lots of reading. Lectures were mostly talking, and then in class questions so you had to go. 3 Discussion posts a week which were easy but annoying. Exams were open note online at home so that was easy. Easy A just confusing material in my opinion and boring. Need to do reading to understand but its so much.
He wrote the textbook for the class and it's basically unnecessary but it's ironic because it's so poorly written (comically so) and he's a LINGUISTICS professor.
Easiest 100 i've literally ever gotten in a class. You are graded on 2 midterms, a final, and weekly discussion posts on packback, along with in-lecture questions. all exams are at home, and the exams are open for a week so you can choose when to take it. discussion section quizzes are extra credit.
THE EASIEST CLASS. Highly recommend taking if you need a GPA booster. Graded by weekly lecture questions and then computerized non lockdown exams, in which all answers are accessible on the internet. Lecture was very boring, but if you get someone to send you the in lecture questions, then you would never have to go to class and get a 100%
Harry seems like a nice guy but his class is a lot of rambling. Attendance is mandatory because you need to answer the in-lecture question. Three discussion posts are required per week and there are 3 open note, open book, online exams. Overall a very easy gen ed but it can be quite boring.
prof van der hulst is very nice. responds to emails quickly, and is happy to explain any issues you might run into in class. attendance is mandatory because he does in lecture questions, but they are really easy. as long as you do all of the assignments and exams (which are open book), you'll 100% pass the class. discussion course is extra credit.
Lectures are dry, but attendance polls make them worth going to. Exams are open-note, so take detailed notes. unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a manageable class if you put in the effort.
It's hard not to get an A in this class. So much extra credit for putting in minimal effort and all the exams are online asynchronous open note with no lockdown browser. The lectures were often pretty dry but the content was sometimes interesting. The textbook felt like it was meant for professionals not random college students. Easy A but boring.
This professors lecture is honestly a bit boring, but the class itself is so easy. There are in lecture questions, but they're easy to do and get a good grade on. Exams are not cumulative, open all week, open note, open browser.
Extremely boring. Puts up slides when he presents, but little information is on them so it's hard to stay engaged. This could be remedied if he was an exciting presenter. He is not. Very hard to stay focused during class. Exams are online so it's hard to find motivation to care in class.
Took the philosophy credit, good course for that if you aren't interested in philosophy. The course was easy but tedious. All assignments were either textbook responses or discussion posts. The professor wrote the textbook, and part of the grade was providing feedback on it. At times felt like we were being graded more as an editor than a student.
