Poor lecturer, Tests full of errors, Unclear course notes
No Comments
Knows his stuff. He isn't the best lecturer but it's an easy class.
Although he's a decent guy, he basically just reads from his slides. His notes often contradict the textbook and his classes drag on. However he is funny in a very dry way, and in the end I think he curved all the marks up.
REALLY REALLY BORING! Bad lecturer! Exams are not straight forward! Avoid at all costs.
I took him last semester for learning dis. Easiest class in the world. Only 3 papers 4 pages each. No midterm, no final. Doesn't take attendance and you really don't need to go to class. I dont know what these bozos are talking about.
best teacher ever
lectures right out of textbook - boring! i consistently fell asleep in this class. quiet&soft-spoken and quite nice, and occaisionally will tell a really random story that makes the class a little more interesting. tests not too difficult.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! he basically reads you the textbook. the only reson i went to class was it saved me time when i had to study. so boring! he thinks his jokes are hilarious when they aren't and he isn't helpful when you need help. AVOID!!!
He's not that bad.. actually I find him good. He does use the book as his teaching tool but that only makes it easier to write the papers. He's really nice and if you need help just go see him personally and he'll help you.
this is the worst teacher i've ever had. he knows nothing about psychology and his exams are crazy.
I love when he tells stories. He teaches straight from the book but if you read it and listen in class, it's reasonable!!
His exams are a complete joke....if you like to memorize what animals names are for specific experiments...this class is for you. He's boring, knows nothing and every time I approached him to ask a question after class, I checked his pulse!
one of the worst, if not the worst, teachers I ever had. no notes, just copy/paste from the textbook, no office hours. I took him for Learning I and I learned NOTHING, quite the irony, isn't it. He will ask obscure questions from the footnotes.
had him in summer.horrible.never attented.reads the text 4 u.exams r ridiculous.ex:what animal was used in *** exp. or what's da name of da animal in *** exp.RIDICULOUS!pointless to go to class.just read da book & know the most useless aspects of the experiments!TRY TO AVOID TAKIN HIM!
his exams are really hard and do not test your knowledge of the material, they are about how well you can memorize quotes!
If your taking him for learning then your in for a hard time. Class participation is unnecesarry and that i guess could be a plus. However his exams are very very hard. You must have a good memory as any question could be asked. You think who said those quotes are meaningless? You fail the exam
you can learn by reading the book, but not from him, so you can skip class. Will ask questions out of context in exam. Like who said what and who done what. Take him if you like memorizing stuff.
He's a bit boring in class, but he's trying to make it intersting so you can at least give him that. His tests are ridiculous tho, he focuses on footnotes, names of animals in studies, and names of researchers.
this prof is unbelievable; he tests you on stuff that has nothing to do with the course...word of advice; study all the footnotes and the little quotes at the beginning of the chapter as well as any names of people or animals in different studies-he tests you on that sort of stuff!!
AMEN! Tests are so obnoxious... I studied the theories to the max, and instead i got a question about what kind of animal Charlie was (an Octopus by the way)!!! SO FRUSTRATING
i stopped attending class after the midterm. it's just an insult to my intelligence(the little that i have) when a university teacher reads from the book, and asks me about pointless things that have no educational value.
If you enjoy teaching yourself, then this is the class for you! He is absolutely dull and makes what could be an interesting course, boring as hell. His exams are ridiculous. He tests you on irrelevant materials, for example names of animals. Just be sure to memorize your book!
should take this class for an easy grade... although his lectures are boring and he reads straight from the book, in this class, the first hour is reserved for viewing american movies... then you must relate a psyc theory in relation to hte characters of the movie... really easy
Come on guys!!! This guy is great - sure he does ask some weird questions on the tests, but also makes up for it when correcting essay questions. He's funny in his own way and very helpful. I loved this class and hope to have this teacher again. Lighten up people...
His classes are really boring and sometimes seem pointless. Even when he has something interesting to say, he is still so monotonous that it makes it boring. But overall, I would say he isn't such a bad prof. Midterm was much more fair than what I had expected. If you don't mind teaching yourself the material, then Galina isn't so bad.
i agree with everyone! The class is painfully boring and his tests are insanely irrelevant to the material. Memorize names, quotes and any other useless information in order to get an A. Talking to a napkin is more stimulating than attending his lectures!
I am extremely unhappy about this professor. If you are into memorizing stuff inside out, take him. If you actually want a teacher who will teach, don't take him. I never went to class, I just taught myself the material and managed to get an A in the midterm, but do not be fooled, you must really know the material like crazy (names, dates, quotes)
Snore!!!! He puts me to sleep! I can't listen to him for more than 15 minutes even when I have to force myself. He is much easier to take for motivation than learning though because he's not as picky on the questions. He's is just SO BORING.
I recommend taking his class because it's an easy pass as long as you teach yourself. He sucks as a lecturer and uses profanities in an effort to seem cool or to get peoples attention. The good thing is that so little is taught in class, you never have to show up.
Worst teacher ever!! He does not know how to teach, and besides that the material is extremely boring...DON'T TAKE IT!
He likes to talk about sex a lot even though it has nothing to do with the class. His multiple choice questions are ridiculously and needlessly hard in ways that don't have to do with knowing the course material. He is extremely unapproachable but the subject material is not very hard.
He's a little gentle, with a lot of scary underneath. He appears to be a psychologist who needs a psychologist.
"He appears to be a psychologist who needs a psychologist" totally!! he is very boring...very!! the essay exam questions are way vague and the MC is either way hard or the answer is in the question...easy way to make a B+ dont show up to class...just read the book!
The class is actually quite boring. He does have some funny quriks up his sleeve (i.e., batman, bart, sound effects), and swears which is pretty cool. He does lecture straight from the book (text scans), but the textbook by Paul Chance is superb. You only have 2 exams and the material is generally interesting. He's also quite funny. Recommended!
Horrible. The guy mumbles and constantly says "n'stuff" at the end of every sentence. The book reads like a manual for a VCR. Teacher is arrogant and not helpful at all. He even suggests not coming to class. If you want to take a psych class this is one to avoid. On the up side there are no exams just 3 papers worth 33%.
I took learning w him.The thing that bothered me z most was his tone (very monotonous & not loud enough).Besides this, he`d ask irrelevant things in xams such as name of z animal in xperiment! Overall, he`s allright; book was EXTREMELY helpful though, since lectures were based on it.Being in class helps tho, since some xam stuff is not in the book!
I really enjoyed this class (because of the content, not the prof). He has a great sense of humour, but his tone is so monotonous you tend to zone out most of the time. The textbook is amazing--crystal clear and easy to follow (practice quizzes included). WARNING: hardest marker EVER (your letter grade will be 1 or 2 categories lower guaranteed)

Avoid!
This prof is ABSOLUTELY great! He has so much knowledge and experience in the field of psychology that he has all the rights in the world to show off. He has a great sense of humor. Just read the textbooks inside and out and you should be fine :D. Good luck!
He knows a lot about the subject but he cannot teach. The most boring class ever. Hard marker on papers.
he is great. he just is. he is human. he doesn't ask too much. if he doesn't bother to explain it, it's not on the test (fair enough!). i was a little surprised to find that the last couple of personality theorists in the text weren't even mentioned on the final exam. like literally 2-3 chapters... nothing.
He knows his stuff, good at making material interesting and has as particular sense of humor that some people may no appreciate. (I did, so I quite enjoyed the class). He knows BS when he sees it so you need to put in a good effort, but it is worth it in the end.
This class is incredible. It was my most interesting class in psych so far. Take this if you are interested in clinical psych. Teaches you about therapy and you will retain this knowledge for life. Do not regurgitate from the text- he gives tests on common sense answers. Do not panic. Just think and you're do great. Gives marks for attendance.
Great teacher
I think him as a person, he knows a lot about the subject, but in psyc 305 he was awful. If you can take someone else, do it. You need to know minute details on 16 chapters of history text and he marks absurdly low. I'm an A student and managed a B but it wasn't worth it
attendance definitely NOT necessary. but READ THE TEXTBOOK. thats all you need. He's not approachable. interesting course. MANY mistakes (grammar, spelling and #'s) on tests. You'll get interrupted every 15 mins for a correction. Updates moodle regularly which is nice when you don't attend class.
laid back teacher with a good sense of humor. tests aren't too hard. power points he uses in class are always on moodle but I recommend attending his classes cause he explains them in more detail and makes everything easier to understand. -n. fereidouni
Awesome teacher. One of my favourites in my 6 years of university! Sure he's quirky(what do you expect, he's a shrink!), but he's super knowledgeable and funny. Loved his class.
Never take this class with him. It was painful ... and stuff.
does not take attendance, so you can actually pass the exam on the moddle notes alone. Fairly interesting lectures, TED videos were cool, no essays, no writing, exam multiple choice worth 60%!!! If you're looking for a very not bad class, this one will do
This class was AWFUL! The prof is very unhelpful, and the subject is incredibly boring made worse by his boring lectures. But Go to lectures tho b/c the textbook is the WORST I've ever read!! Very confusing, long-winded and not at all reader-friendly. If you don't have to take this course DON'T DO IT!
INCREDIBLY DULL. He tries to engage, makes lame jokes but at least he tries. No room for debate, this class felt like a Motivation for Idiots guide. Posts all his lectures on PP online so attendance is really not necessary. If you have half a brain this class will a cake walk.
Interesting course material, but the textbook is not user-friendly because of its very long paragraphs with little actual information. The teacher was a nice guy but his exams didn't seem to completely reflect the course material, there was always a subjective aspect to his questions that made them vague. Says "and stuff" every second sentence.
Very very easy. Lectures are pretty dull, but I've certainly had worse. Two multiple choice exams and one paper. If you read the slides on moodle and read the chapters, you can get an A+. Pretty easy going guy. Definition of a Bird Course.
Run! Seriously I have never been so unmotivated to attend class in my life! This teacher is a snore to the point where he ruins an interesting subject matter for you. The textbook was not user-friendly and way too long. The class median was like B or B- but no one got an A+ and only 2 people got an A.
The material can be really interesting but he made no effort to make it interesting. He could of at least just give background information to better understand the book, but he did not. I'm not satisfied with his course.
I don't know what all of these negative comments are about, Professor Galina is great! I found his expertise in the subject matter made the class so much more interesting! Although the reading was a little heavy, if you did it, you were almost guaranteed an A. I found him incredibly interesting. Highly recommended. I look forward to having him agai
I really enjoyed attending his classes. Really, they arent that useful for the course, but its interesting hearing about his experiences AND STUFF lol. The textbook isnt really user friendly, and sadly you NEED to read it front to back to pass... If you dont mind reading too much, take the class.
Interesting PSYC class. He was surprisingly funny and laidback. Not a heavy workload and pretty interesting material. I found it a bit annoying that the slides and tests were littered with spelling and grammatical errors. (And I wonder if he knows he mumbles "and stuff" after a lot of sentences). All in all, a very cool prof and good class!
Professor Galina is an amazing teacher! He made the much more interesting..even though the reading was a little boring. If you read the book and attend class you will get an A... Highly recommended.
The lectures are really boring and its hard to listen cause his voice is monotonous, but he's funny and laid back. I never wrote a single note cause the slides are everything you need to know for the exam. I (no joke) always studied the night before by READING the slides and got A.
One of the worst classes I've ever taken. Frustratingly boring, irrelevant classes. The material could have very well been interesting, but I wouldn't know because of Galina, because ultimately, I didn't learn anything. Exams even have some irrelevant questions. I will never take another one of his classes ever again.x
The amount of material that is covered for the midterm and final is crazy. It is all memorization. His exams are extremely unclear and hard to understand what the question is asking. The class is boring but if you listen you may catch something interesting. 1 paper, 2 exams. Paper is easy, exams are hard! STUDY STUDY STUDY!
Powerpoints and class notes are nearly incomprehensible - expect a lot of head-scratching when trying to study the endless material needed for the 2 multiple choice exams. Final essay is very manageable, class is dry but he jokes around a lot, which is a nice buffer. A fine elective to take - a fair amount of effort is required.
He was funny and nice! Very easy class. Interesting videos.
Great teacher!
Pretty dull class, funny at times. There seems to be so much info for one exam, yet I always studied the night before. Obviously I'd freak out before during and after the exam thinking I failed terribly, yet I always got an A. You really have to like psych to do well. I enjoyed his class beacause it made me decide to follow a major in Psych.
GREAT teacher! Very good at explaining and makes this clear. He also adds a lot of his own explanations which help you understand it more. Makes funny jokes even if not many people laugh and adds a lot of cool videos. Study hard and it's an easy A, IF you study hard!
do not take this teacher. already the class subject is hard but this teacher does not explain well at all. he talks about something else for the first half an hour, skips half of his slides (meaning you will have to go through them on your own), his tests are extremely hard (bunch of questions are about a subject never mentioned in class).
Don't take this Prof. You're GPA will drop tremendously. You will do alot of head scatching on his exams esp. his finals. His mc exams DON'T make sense. The questions don't relate to ans and he throws things on exam that you didn't EVEN COVER in class. Tk him twice. Big mistake!I don't expect Univers exams to be easy howev clarity wld help.
Doesn't really "teach." Reads straight off the publisher-supplied PowerPoints. Added YouTube videos to the mix. Doesn't emphasize key points, or anything at all really. This made for a really dull class. People stopped attending because sitting through class was demotivating them. I think we should expect more from the people the Concordia hires.
Funny prof who did his best to make a potentially dry subject more interesting with YouTube videos & TED talks. The midterm was OK, but the final was a disaster - not sure how it was organised, but it was very uneven, with lots of questions on one or two systems, while others remained unmentioned. Carefully read the whole textbook.
Great person. Makes the subject matter very interesting and makes it seem "real" rather than pure academia. You can tell he's been doing this a while but there are still embers of passion. Would take him again (and plan on it).
This teacher does not really teach at all. he copy-pastes quotes from the book and reads the power point slides. Exams are really messy and unclear and you basically need to know the textbook by heart. Subject is awesome and very interesting however. I learned a lot but did not enjoy his teaching.
The content of this course is very interesting, the prof however is kind of weird and isn't very helpful. He copies and pastes quotes from the textbooks to make his slides and just reads them in class. No need to attend lectures since the slides are posted on Moodle. The exams are also very scattered and confusing.
Very easy and entertaining class graded with 2 MC exams and a 4 page reflection paper. Prof. is actually fun to listen to! Exam is straight off his slides and videos shown in class. You have to attend to know the videos, which can all be found online. Galina answers questions throughout exams, which are less stressful with some clear joke options.
Really good prof! Charismatic, knowledgeable, and keeps the class interesting. Study his slides and the videos he shows in class and you'll do well. Class is graded with a small paper and two multiple choice exams. Make sure to really reference class material during your paper, which you can hand in late for a slightly reduced grade.
I don't think teaching is his strong point, but he's a pretty cool guy if you get to know him. Managed to get an A-. Exams are straight off the slides, but there's a lot of material covered, so be prepared. Text helps you understand the concepts more in depth, and I found it relevant. One 4 pg. reflection paper, which was pretty easy.
Really interesting guy, funny, and up to date. the textbook is incredibly helpful and easy to read. At the end of each chapter is a glossary of terms, which are all the things he covers in class
I'm really on the fence about him. He's not very approachable, his course is difficult, and I still feel like I'm drowning in material. His tests are so tough, his lectures are confusing; BUT he's clearly passionate about people who suffer from mental disorders and he's a really smart man. Very knowledgeable and makes jokes all the time.
I took a night class of his and I attended every lecture! I didn't care that it went until 9 p.m. on a Monday, he is so funny! His slides make sense and you just have to read over the textbook quickly to get an A. Awesome teacher.
I wish I could take another one of his classes.
He's inspiring, Although I'm in other program he made me love psychology. very funny, you would never feel sleepy in 3 hours class. Believe me I've slept during 1.5 hour classes!!! it's nothing like those boring profs. He manages subjects very well. You also get the chance to learn about challenges in real life work
Interesting, he teaches like a human not like a machine, explains well, great lectures and very helpful.
amazing lectures, funny, I never was bored in his class and actually looked forward to the lectures.
Exams questions are SUPER specific and unfair! Exams don't reflect relevant information from the course or the textbook! AVOID AVOID AVOID!
Incredible teacher! Relates the topics to his actual experiences as a clinical psychologist. The material is a bit dense but extremely interesting. DO ALL THE READINGS IN ADVANCE!!!!
He knows what he is talking about, and converts the information in a very condensed and simple way so that you understand. However, he conveys class material in such a monotonous way you will feel bored. Exams are extremely are all multiple choice and VERY specific, you must read every detail in the text. You will REALLY work for a decent grade.
He's the kind of guy I would want to go out for a beer with, but kind of dull in terms of lectures. Very monotonous. Not a bad guy but I probably wouldn't take his class again.
This is an awesome teacher if you take the time to actually listen to his lectures. Tests are mostly based on lectures but he might put some stuff hat he randomly talks about in class.
Seems like a great guy and remarkable therapist, however, tends to read off the slides which only makes his off handed comments/jokes the only memorable portion of the class. First exam seemed fair and equal to information, the paper was quickly graded and generous, the final was very specific and not equal but +50% of the class skipped lectures.
I really enjoyed this class. The lectures were fun, there were often videos to help our understanding and we also got interesting anecdotes from the professor's experience as a clinical psychologist.
He is a really good and interesting teacher. I love the way he doesn't just follow the book or follow the ''should learn that'' but explain to us more from his personal experience. Also, he is a fair grader and exams are really fair, and so is the final paper! I would take him again and I highly recommend him.
Honestly I'm sorta iffy about this prof. If you work your butt off you can get an A. You MUST read the book!! I cannot emphasize this enough. The final is not cumulative, however there are 8 chapters to study for. So make readings notes! Learn the details! Think something's not important? Think again. Overall, he's ok.
Such a great professor and extremely nice!! A midterm, a 5-page (double-spaced) paper, and a final. Final is not cumulative but there are 8-9 chapters to study for each of the 2 exams, so be prepared to read. Attendance is not mandatory. Exams are fair, but READ THE BOOK -and read it very well- because he asks for specifics!
He isn't very clear in terms of what he expects on assignments & some exam questions were a bit ambiguous, but if you read the book and review before the exam, you can do well. I liked that he talked about some of his experiences as a clinical psychologist. He also uses a variety of material (slides, videos, etc.). Loved his little jokes as well.
He is much better in psyc 340. Was disappointed. Classes were pretty long and boring and the final was really hard. I really did not enjoy this course. He gives good grades though.
I JUST had him for my fall semester psyc 305. Everything was going super well, got amazing grades on my midterm and my paper but then the final... I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN EXAM BE THAT SPECIFIC. To give you an example, a short answer question worth 15 marks was on something he mentioned in passing. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA. ALSO BORING AF.
DO NOT TAKE. I did extremely well on midterm and paper (A+) and he completely screwed everyone on the final. Questions barely covered material and had two essay questions on concepts he barely mentioned in class and that were not in book. Final was worth 45% so I went from getting an A+ in his class to wondering if I was going to pass.
He never talks about what he will be testing you on, he never gives guidance for the paper. I ended up not getting a very good grade on the paper even through he accepted my topic and even said it was a great topic. The final was incredible difficult! No amount of studying could have prepared me for it. It was very hard. Keep away at all costs!
he is so boring. read the book and dont show up to class IMO. anyways, his exams are very much like what is int he book and he never actually asks questions about his personal experiences
Honestly, one of the worst classes I have taken to date. The final exam... let's just say it seemed like I was in the wrong final. His class is very dry, exams are difficult. I would not recommend him as a professor. I thought I bombed the final, but pretty sure he bell curved the grades.
I agree with many of the posters about the difficulty of the final but, I assure you that you will do fine if you make sure that you keep up with the reading and go to class. Don't be discouraged by the material, Dr. Galina makes it interesting and applicable. I recommend sitting in front to hear him and write down even the smallest of details.
Enjoyed the reading and lectures - he's obviously really interested in this topic and explains things really well. He's also really down to earth and actually hilarious. Knowing the textbook inside out is essential to succeed in the exams.
TERRIBLE!!!! He is a nice guy and make funny jokes frequently, but his class is extremely DRY and HARD. He is beyond monotone and the exams are extremely difficult. It's too bad because the concept of the class is interesting but the exams ridiculous. He asks questions on the exam that make you feel like you've been studying the wrong material...
Good teacher, interesting lectures. However the tests are difficult and he asks you to relate theories to one another (the answers are not obvious, he's tricky). Doesn't take attendance, but he'll ask you questions on the exam about stuff he ONLY talks about in class (ie We'd watch TED Talks and the exam essay question was about it) So go to class!
I do not recommend him. The midterm and the assignment are OK however the final is worth 45% and even with a lot of studying, the exam makes you feel as though you forgot to study half of the material. The two long answer questions had not even been discussed in class and were worth 30 marks in total! The final is impossible to do well on.
Midterm only multiple choices and a few fill-in the blanks. You just have to know the entire book by heart. Paper guidelines not clear, but no one got less than a B-. However, I chose not to believe the negative comments on this website about the final. But believe me, it has NOTHING to do with the midterm. Tested on things we had never heard of.
He is not one of best, that's for sure. Average at best. My best advice: has very strong opinions about certain things. Agree with nim on your long answers and on your papers. Also, go to class. While you will be bored out of your skull, he shows little youtube snippets that show up at exam questions. nothing you can do to prepare for final.
