Sitting through her class will confuse you 1000 times more than just reading the textbook on your own. If you know what you are doing when you walk in that class, you will walk out missing brain cells. Nothing is explained. She can not explain why she does things. I could teach this better by just reading the textbook. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Harshani is one of the best teachers I have in the UGA. She is kind and helpful all the time. Even outside the class she helps us a lot. I enjoy her way of teaching and sitting in her class. I also enjoy the activities we do in the class. I highly recommend her class to anyone who is interested.
Ms. Harshani was my Lab TA. She was caring and professional, and she tried to help our group to know what to do despite our little experience in the lab. Also the lab books are not too helpful if you already don't know what's happening. She's not an easy grader (maybe more fair), and she really likes precision.
Ms. Harshani was truly a caring and great teacher. She was always willing to answer questions and help her students. She knew what was going on, and she was passionate about the material we were learning. She was understanding and put herself in the shoes of the students. She was a fair grader. I am so thankful I had her as my TA. She is amazing.
My TA Harshani Rathnaweera- made this class one of the most engaging and academically enriching class I have taken this semester. Her attention to detail and her commitment to the success of her students is clearly evident through her prelab lectures and inspirational teaching style. It is a blessing to have Harshani as your TA in your class
I have never had a better lab TA. I am a transfer student who took labs at two other universities, and Harshani was by far the best TA i have ever had. Harshani really cared about each of her students, and really tried her best to help us really learn the material and do the labs by ourselves. You are so lucky if you get Harshani as your teacher.
Harshani was exceptionally good at explaining concepts and critiquing our procedure, while still encouraging us to learn and think on our own. She genuinely helped us to understand sometimes difficult concepts! Always Harshani ready to aid student with their confusion also let us know where we could improve to do better on upcoming assignments.
She is nice, but not a good teacher.
I only had her for my online labs, but she did a great job of explaining everything. Super kind and super enthusiastic, even at 8 AM. She might take a while t email back, but she helps you resolve the problem.
She explained the labs clearly and answered any questions we had. The best part was that she answered questions in a way that forced you to understand the process vs. just giving you the answer, and she graded fairly. I hope I get her next semester for online again. Great lab!
She's a good teacher, but I didn't like the way her class was structured. Her lectures for the chapters would be AFTER the reading checks, which are for a grade. Even though the reading checks are based on the textbook, it would've been more effective for students to learn the material better if the lectures were before...
Terrible teacher. Extremely passive aggressive. Fails to effectively teach the class. The progress check are virtually impossible due to the extreme case sensitivity. Would never take again. cannot understand half the words she says
Worst class ever. Does not teach the material well whatsoever. Rude and does not want to help fix grades if there is an issue. The progress checks are ridiculous and not prepared well for the exam. I got an A in chem 1 and am seriously struggling in chem 2. DO NOT TAKE WITH HER
Rathnaweera is a super nice lady. Probably one of the nicest and most helpful professors in the chem department. I think she has a lot of potential to be a great professor, however she can be hard to understand. I believe that if she worked on her communication skills she would be best the best professor in the department.
Rathnaweera is by far the best chemistry professor I've had. I had to drop Chem2 last semester because I would have failed and she has made Chem so much better. She is very caring and invested in her students. She really cares about what students make on the exams. Progress checks are difficult but she has nothing to do w them. Highly recommend!
Harshani was the best professor Ive had yet & by far the best chemistry professor Ive had. This course is difficult no matter the teacher but she goes above and beyond to help her students. She is accessible to students almost 24/7 and constantly has office hours and sends out extra review that other teachers dont care to make. Awesome professor
Dr. Rathnaweera was a great professor. She was always looking for ways to help her students and she provided tons of extra practice problems for tests. Chemistry is hard but Rathnaweera tries to prepare you as much as she can and wants all her students to do well.
Rathnaweera puts in so much effort for her students, meeting with them over her holidays and weekends to make sure we know the material. Obviously progress checks and a flipped classroom are difficult, but the chem department is in charge of that and there is nothing she can do about it. Shes so sweet and really cares about our success.
Lots of the complaints are things the chem dept controls, not the profs. The chem dept is awful but Rathnaweera does everything she can to combat that. Accessible, works nonstop to provide notes, annotated versions of the notes, extra practice problems, etc. Had help sessions before tests on the weekends. Work hard and take her if you can!
*Mostly taught myself the class with posted lectures* Because it was her first semester teaching, she was a little nervous and sometimes messed up while doing problems on the board. However, she is very intelligent and if you ask her questions she is more than willing to help. She tries to make class easier for everyone. Class questions are graded.
Dr. Rathnaweera has been an absolute delight and hidden gem of the Chemistry department. Her attitude and willingness to take time out of her own schedule to help her students succeed has really made the difference in my understanding of the course material, and I cannot thank her enough for her contributions. Highly Recommend her.
Amazing teacher. Really good and goes in depth. Would take again for sure. RLLY GOOD
Dr. Rathnaweera is a great lecturer, and does a great job of balancing class time between clicker questions and lecturing. She practically gives us test questions, as her clicker questions and homeworks are pulled from previous tests. She is really sweet and cares so much about making her class a great learning environment for everyone.
She is a good lecturer, can move fast through material. She is very accessible and helpful before tests and uplaods all the material as well as extra resources that you can use. She responds to emails fast and does a good job preparing her students. Her class usually has the highest grades for each test. Participation questions in class are meh.
Dr. Rathnaweera is such an amazing and caring professor! She does everything she can to help you do well on tests, including going out of her way to do extra office hours on the day of the test or the weekend before the test. I was able to do very well in 1212 because of Dr. Rathnaweera and understand everything. She is the best chem professor!
Chem 1212 is a hard class, but I believe that Dr. Rathnaweera is the best professor to take for it. She gives good lectures, lots of practice problems, and frequently sends out helpful information for tests. If you study you can actually do very well!
She is definitely your best option for chem. Her lectures are great, although she does a lot of participation questions so skipping will hurt your grade. She makes a ton of effort to be avaliable outside of class, does review sessions and gives lots of practice work. Overall great lady and made chem 2 bearable for me.
She's a great lecturer. She posts all her slides on ELC, but that doesn't mean you can skip. Get ready to do a lot of clicker questions. She gives out homework, usually around 3-5 questions. The homework isn't terrible, but they can be a bit of an inconvenience. Either way, she is one of the best chem1212 professors.
Rathnaweera was extremely nice in person, but good luck getting a reply back on an email. Her class is structured in the worst possible way, you'll be learning content for the next test before you've taken the first one and her lectures are useless. Would never take her again, her class was set up for anyone that learns by example to fail.
Dr. Rathnaweera is one of the best chem teachers I had so far. Her lectures are very useful. She explains material well. She posted her lectures slides before the class which was extremely useful for me to study. She is also good at replying to emails, sometimes she replies in 10 min, or may take couple of hours but you will get a reply promptly.
Dr. Rathnaweera is your best bet for CHEM1212! She is so kind and willing to go out of her way to help all of her students before the exams. She gives plenty of practice problems and extra resources before each tests, and she holds zoom review sessions on Sundays the week of the test to go over any last minute questions. She's amazing!!
Dr. Rathnaweera is an INCREDIBLE professor. She truly cares about her students succeeding in her class and puts a ton of effort into helping her students understand the material. She even will go out of her way to give office hours on holidays and gives multiple resources before the test to understand the material clearly. TAKE HER!
I absolutely ADORED Dr. Rathnaweera. She is the sweetest human and cares so much about her students. While she does talk pretty fast, she posts her lecture notes ahead of time and posts her annotated slides after, both of which are extremely helpful. She has an excellent balance of practice questions and lecturing. I loved my experience with her!
Dr. Rathnaweera is an amazing chem professor!! Take her if you can! She is great at clearly explaining concepts and will make sure everyone understands something before moving on. Make sure you do the practice problems she gives you and attend every class that you can. This class is manageable if you work hard.
The best thing about Dr. Rathnaweera is how accessible she is out of class. She has always emailed me back within an hour, even late at night. She provides bonus points for class activities throughout the semester when attendance is low. She is very nice, but she does talk really fast which is hard to understand sometimes.
Shes super sweet and very helpful. Provides lots of practice and shes always willing to help you. My attendance definitely was not 100% but she still gave me a 100%. You wont regret taking her.
Amazing professor, and a great teacher, absolutely loved her. I don't feel like going into detail because I'm lazy, but she was a really good professor and the lectures were actually useful. Very available outside of class too. Take her.
Dr. Rathnaweera is an excellent professor. Basically every other praise everyone is giving her is true. She gives great lectures, posts lecture slides daily, is always available for help, will work with you as much as she can, and is just a caring instructor in general. I think she'd be your best bet for 1212.
Harshani is such a sweetheart! She often brought us candy during lectures after tests. The course itself has a lot of work but that's just chem at UGA. Out of all the chem profs. I've met, she is definitely my favorite. She assigns lots of homework but it does help you learn concepts better. Chem sucks at UGA so make it slightly better & take her!
you can tell she genuinely cared about us students understanding the content. one of the best professors I've had.
Professor Rathnaweera is a very caring person who you can tell cares about her job as a teacher. However, I found her lectures difficult to understand due to the pacing of the course. It is incredibly fast paced and it is hard to keep up when she is talking. She was available outside of class, and our textbook was online.
She is a very nice person and always asks us how our days/weekends were. Her lectures are VERY fast-paced, but granted she has a ton of content to cover. She covers everything on the test, but sometimes very briefly. Her explanation of stoichiometry and other math is a little confusing, but she is good at explaining concepts. I'm in 1211 lecture.
I personally felt like this teacher was very hard to understand and was not always clear when answering questions. Chemistry is already a really hard class and sometimes she was not super helpful. Even so, She was always very nice and considerate and tried her best to help. She is just sometimes hard to understand when lecturing.
The chem department is awful, but she makes it so much better. She covered all content and offered so much extra practice. She posts blank slides before class and annotated after. While chem is still hard and the department makes it harder, she is understanding and tries to prepare you the best she can. Her students always do best on the exams
She is a very good teacher for chem because it is a difficult class and she makes it easier to understand. Besides tests, there are reading checks, progress checks, and recitations which helps because there is a lot of practice. She also drops the two lowest grades for each which is a big help.
Dr. Rathnaweera is amazing at conceptualizing difficult chemistry topics, she prepares her students for the chemistry department's exams extremely efficiently. One of the top stem profs at uga by far.
Rathnaweera is a very helpful and accessible professor outside of class which is important for chem. She does have an accent but I didn't have trouble understanding her. This class is very difficult but I would take her again because she does a good job at explaining content and goes in depth. Take her!
Rathnaweera is a great professor. She is so sweet and will help you if you don't understand something. ATTEND OFFICE HOURS. Very easy to get questions answered and understand the topics that are hard if you go since she explains them at your pace. Class wasn't bad if you do all the practice worksheets and ask questions.
She is really nice. It is hard for everyone no matter who you take, but I thought she was okay. She posts annotated lecture slides which are a godsend for studying. The progress checks are awful. I could tell she cared, but then again she didn't give me points back when I only added an extra space to my answer. Im still sour.
Dr. Rathnaweera tries her best in the chemistry department! She is always available to answer questions and is pretty good with responding to emails. I recommend her for CHEM because she always reviews before tests and her questions are closely related to test material. She is very sweet and tries her best to make CHEM bearable.
Dr. Rathnaweera was an amazing teacher. The class is really run by the chem department itself and they suck, so it's not her fault the tests are hard and we have alot of hw. But her lectures are very good and she really prepares you. Plus she is so approachable and will always help if you reach out.
Chemistry at UGA is notoriously difficult. Harshani is super nice and you can tell she tries her best, but the chemistry department at UGA dictate class structure so there's not much she can do. She has a tendency to go fast and at times can be a little difficult to understand but for the most part I was happy with her teaching style.
Dr. Rathnaweera is a great professor, but because the chem department dictates the course structure/tests, the course is challenging. She is easy to talk to after class, and her lectures were understandable. Prepare for difficult tests, all professors give the same ones. The final exam is standardized/much easier, brought me up to an A from a B/B-.
While she was at times hard to understand and sometimes the material was quite frankly wrong, I am thankful for my previous chemistry experience as I don't know how I would survive if I didn't have prior chem. Thankfully I ended the class with a 99.83, good luck to yall, but dr rathnaweera loves participation and is super personable.
The chemistry department is just horrible in itself. I heard Rathnaweera is the best professor out of all for CHEM 1211. I hated how we would learn new material on the day of our exams. We barely ever reviewed. Questions were welcomed, but she did tell me to just think about it one time. She brought us candy on the last day, which was nice.
Dr. Rathnaweera is a hidden gem of the chem department. So kind and wants to help her students. She held optional review sessions on the weekends just so we could ask her any last questions. Very accessible outside of class and does lots of practice problems in lecture to prepare for exams.
Dr. Rathnaweera really cared and wanted her students to succeed. Her lectures were effective, and she gave us practice problems similar to the exam problems. She had so many office hours and was always available to offer her help. I would highly recommend trying to take her for chem 1211.
She posts annotated notes to ELC which is super nice when you are doing online assignments. She gave you all the materials necessary for the tests, which I know some other professors would leave out or say you didn't need to know materials that ended up being on the test.
No matter who you take 1211 with it'll be hard. She was okay but her accent was very strong and sometimes hard to understand. She flies through topics and there is a lot of material on each test. The semester only gets harder FYI so make sure to do very good on the easy topics in the beginning. Go over each progress check and recitation to prepare!
Dr. Rathnaweera is a very sweet lady who definitely cares about her students. She has a thick accent though which made her kinda hard to understand at first. Chem is hard, but that's not her fault. The chem dept at UGA just has lots of flaws. She sometimes isn't the best at answering questions, but overall I'd say she is a good choice for 1211
She is a very kind woman, but not the best at answering questions. She skips some more basic parts of lectures bc she assumes we already know them. Her lectures are really just repeating the book and not very helpful. Not a bad choice though. Chem just sucks.
This class was okay, pretty hard content but I had science guyz and Dr. Rathnaweera's slides were very helpful because she provides a lot of examples and annotations. She does talk really fast so it can be hard to keep up and sometimes if you ask her a question, she does not explain very well and sometimes gets upset if you dont get it.
Dr. Rathnaweera is very helpful and approachable. She truly cares about her students and wants them to understand the material. She is also very knowledgeable and is good at answering questions both during and outside of class. She is very kind and patient when you ask her question and she tries her best to clarify your questions.
Very sweet and was generous when answering questions. Only time she got mad is towards a girl who interrupts class 24/7. Office hours are amazing because of how much we have to cover in lectures.
If you are taking chem 1211, Dr Rathnaweera is definitely your best option! She answers any questions asked in lectures and you can tell that she cares deeply for each of her students and our grades. She makes very good slides. She also emailed us info out of class that we needed like recommended practice questions in the textbook.
Professor Rathnaweera is sweet but tends to talks too fast and her lectures can be confusing. Even though she is available for office hours, you can really only get one question in before she cuts you off to talk to someone else. Additionally, she sometimes gets annoyed if you do not understand the topic or ask more than 2 questions.
Dr. Rathnaweera is very nice and helpful in the class as well as during her office hours. She gives an opportunity for everyone to ask a question when there is a lot of students in her office hours. I think it is very good otherwise you will not get chance to ask any question because some students ask a lot of back to back questions.
Dr. Rathnaweera is one of the best options for CHEM 1211. She is very kind. Her lectures are good and her slides are well organized. She is never get annoying when you ask questions. You need to understand that she has a lot to cover per day according our schedule. So, attend her office hours if you have many questions. It will help you a lot.
I don't think it really matters what chemistry professor you get. All chemistry exams, reading checks, progress checks etc for are the exact same and the professor doesn't even grade them. UGA chemistry sucks, and your best bet is going to be science guys and practicing the recitation sheets. Prof R is nice but extremely hard to understand.
She is a great professor. She does go very fast at times so keeping up is extremely important.
Dr. Rathnaweera made Chem 1 a lot less daunting than how people make it out to be. There is a stigma that all the Chem professors are soulless, but she was always engaged and very caring about her students. If you can take her section, do it!
Dr. Rathnaweera is amazing! She is always willing to meet with students outside of class and answer any questions. Even though Dr. Rathnaweera is sometimes a little hard to understand in lecture, she always gives lots of practice. It is clear that she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. I would definitely recommend her!
chem is difficult no matter what but rathnaweera is the best prof you could get. so many practice problems, great in office hours, amazing test prep, truly cares about students. she provides 10-15 practice worksheets for every exam that are super helpful. amazing amazing professor.
I loved Rathnaweera, she is such a caring woman who loves what she does. She wasn't a bad professor at all but the course she teaches is a monster. The pacing for chem1211 is absolute crap but she tries her best. She is very understanding and willing to help you in any way possible. Shes very flexible with office hours and zooms. She cares a lot!
Professor Rathnaweera is a very solid choice for Chem 1211. She has an accent but it's not difficult to understand her. She was extremely caring and accessible outside of class because she knows that CHEM 1211 is a tough course at UGA. The pacing of the course is not the best, but she makes the most out of it.
All CHEM1211 classes follow the same structure but Rathnaweera is an amazing professor! Super caring professor. Rathnaweera is very knowledgable and easily accessible. Answers individual questions before, during, and after class. Has several office hours and posts multiple worksheets on exam weeks, as well as exam practice in class on exam day.
CHEM1211 is a very difficult class, but Dr. Rathnaweera made it slightly more tolerable. She was always accessible out of class (she responded to one of my late night emails at like 3am instantly) and really cares about her students. Be warned though, her lectures go by really fast and she has a thick accent. Go to class and ask questions.
Dr. Rathnaweera was extremely kind and respectful to her students. Chem at UGA is very hard, but she made it better. Her class is all lecture with a lot of practice problems. She always makes sure students know the material before moving on, and she recognizes how hard Chem is at UGA. She was always available outside class time.
She is so sweet and good at explaining the material. She office hours all the time and responds to emails ASAP, even late at night. Chem at UGA is literally the absolute worst and is so unnecessarily difficult, but she helped a lot. Definitely go to all the lectures and do the review worksheets that are posted on eLC before the exam.
She was an amazing professor. She made sure no student was left behind and was very available for questions and concerns. Disregarding the cacophony that is the UGA chem department, she did her very best. Her office hours were very helpful and getting her to explain the progress/reading checks were very beneficial.
Chem 1211 is not terrible if you have taken chemistry before but it will still require lots of studying. Dr. Rathnaweera will provide you with lots of materials for you to be successful in the class. Be ready to put in the work and time.
Dr. Rathnaweera was pretty good. Uploaded slides before class, uploaded her annotated slides after, gave tons of practice problems and was friendly and helpful. I would recommend 2nd, and my top reccomendation is Jenson, only because Dr.R had a thick accent that was hard to understand sometimes. Overall though she was great. Go to office hours!
Dr. R is really nice and actually cares about how her students are doing, even in a large lecture environment. She uploads slides before class so you can preview them, and she uploads her annotated slides after class. She's not at all condescending when you ask questions which I can't say for many of my first year professors. Would take again.
Best Chem professor at UGA. She nice always helps you go over work. She posts good notes and spends lots of time in class making sure everyone understands. I'm pretty sure the test averages for her class were ten points higher than other classes. Also, sometimes she will give everyone candy for holidays or an end of semester treat :)
chemistry is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. Professor R. made it as easy as she could and explained complicated topics very well in class. However, sometimes it feels like she lacks empathy ex. be prepared to get told a concept is easy when you feel like it's the hardest thing ever. Besides that she is great!
All the CHEM 1211 classes have the same homework (and a lot of it) and exams, but Dr. Rathnaweera is your best chance at getting an A in this class. She's super sweet and her slides are great, and she posts them before and after each class. She also posts tons of extra practice and emails with textbook problems!
Dr.R is the best prof you can get with the crappy chem department at UGA and also very quick with emails. She posts many lectures and practice problems for the tests. RECITATION practice problems are the key to doing well on the exams, basically copied word for word. Quizzes are hard on cengage and useless for the tests so just get through them.
The best gen chem professor. Shes highly supportive and encourages questions in her class. Although the class is challenging, she is patient and works with the class. Make sure to review the slides before class, bc she will power through a whole chapter in a week tops. Wonderful lecturer and person, if you want to be challenged and learn, take her!
Dr. R is by far the best choice for chem! There were many times where she went over problems nearly identical to those given on exams because she knows exactly how the exams try to trick you. The textbook is useless. Personally, I needed Science Guyz tutoring to get an A, but the content gets easier as the semester goes on imo. Good luck!
She was amazing. Very interactive with the class and made content very clear during lectures, as well as providing many practice problems, similar to ones on the exams.
Dr. Rathnaweera was awesome! Her lectures were easy to follow, and she did a TON of practice problems with us. She gave us a bunch of optional recommended problems. The exams are difficult and CHEM 1211 in general has a lot of weekly homework to keep up with, but she was available to help. She is the absolute sweetest as well and genuinely cares!
She made a challenging course manageable. She gave us so many practice problems in class, and before each test, she would send an email listing a bunch of resources where you could find practice problems. If you were ever confused, you could ask her after class, or she had office hours and even listed other professors' hours.
I agree with whatever the other reviews say
Chemistry is just a hard subject and there's no getting around that, but she clearly takes time to create example problems and make quality slideshows. She makes sure to go over everything that will be on the tests and teaches well! There is Squarecap though.
I know she has great ratings, but I personally did not like her teaching style at all. I did not find it engaging or helpful, but she does post questions to review that are on the test. Chem is hard so she wasn't too bad, but for me her accent was a bit tough at times.
She was amazing! Chem is going to be hard no matter what, but she was very easy to access outside of class and provided her students with more than enough extra practice work that was completely optional. She doesn't make the exams, but she does her best to prepare you well for exactly what will be on there. Her powerpoints were the best by far.
Chem sucks no matter what at UGA, but she made it slightly more tolerable. She is very kind and sweet to talk to and has very good lecture slides for review. If you take her, review with someone that has the professor that writes the exams, as you may miss some important hints. Also she uses squarecap.
She is so sweet and accessible. She really wants you to do well. She gives a lot of practice for exams, DO IT. Chem sucks at UGA but she definitely helps. She's your best shot for Chem 2 if you can't get Ellenberger. Her PP's has basically everything you need. The one thing is her accent. It's a little hard to understand, but you get used to it.
She is nice but has a thick accent and lectures can be hard to follow sometimes. Gives plenty of study material though. Tough class but she gives you access to what you need to succeed.
I took Dr. Rathnaweera for both CHEM1211 and CHEM1212 and enjoyed her class both times. It's not a secret that gen chem is hard at UGA, but Dr. Rathnaweera is a good lecturer who clearly cares about her students. She moves fast through the material, so I would suggest taking notes before class and adding onto during lecture.
She is a good teacher overall, but she lectures very fast. I recommend learning the material before you go to her lectures. Sometimes the way she phrases things can get confusing but she will re-explain if you ask. Her office hours are extremely helpful.
I can go on and on about how amazing Dr. Rathnaweera is. She is such a thorough lecturer and the sweetest person. She gives so many problems in her slides and also gives textbook problems as well for extra practice, so you feel extra prepared for exams. If you want to do well in chem, I think she is your best bet.
Dr. Rathnaweera is great given how bad the chem department is as a whole. She goes in depth during lecture and gives tons of practice problems. She sets you up for success as long as you're willing to put in the time and effort that is needed to do well in this course. Nothing bad to say about her just the department she works for is awful.
Taking Dr. Rathnaweera for both 1211 and 1212 was the best thing that could have happened to me. She is very dedicated towards making sure everyone understands the content by holding lots of office hours and posting tons of practice. She truly cares for her students and it shows, as long as you attend class, getting a good grade is possible.
Dr. Rathnaweera is a very sweet woman, who definitely wants you to succeed. The only downside to her is she goes way to fast. At one point in the semester she finished 11 slides in two minutes before class ended because she did not want to continue the next day. UGA chem is awful no matter who you take, but if available take her.
Chem is really up to you if you wanna get an A, but she is very helpful if you need to better understand something or get confused when studying. Lectures are fine but really fast so make sure you pay attention. You will be prepared for the test, sometimes questions on the exam are straight from her practice problems in class.
Professor Rathnaweera is such a sweet individual and she makes taking gen chem at UGA easier. She does go at a fast pace, especially when there is no time left in class, so it's hard to understand the content. However, she does make up for it with the endless practice problems she provides her students (some of them end up on the actual exam).
Dr Harshani is a very very sweet and caring professor but chemistry is a nasty subject. She provides endless practice problems in her powerpoints and recommends problems from the textbook to work on. She can rush a bit at the end when running out of time but she will go over it next lecture.
She is a great Gen Chem professor.
Chem is very hard at UGA but Rathnaweera is a great teacher that really cares. She is really understanding and is willing to answer questions about the concepts.
Rathnaweera is an amazing Gen Chem professor. She is very knowledgeable and explains topics of chemistry very well.
She's very nice and good at explaining things 1-on-1 but she goes SO fast in lecture that sometimes it's impossible to keep up with. It sometimes felt it was more important to finish the slides than it was to actually teach anything. I will probably be taking someone else for CHEM 1212. Tutoring at Scienceguys and with CLAs helped me so much.
Rathanweera is the most helpful in office hours and cares about her students. Only downside is she goes kind of fast and is sometimes hard to understand, but if you see her after class or during her office hours she explains everything for you. I think she is a great teacher and keeps the fast paced content interesting to learn.
You can tell Dr. Rathnaweera is a good professor and will very willingly help you. However, her lectures go extremely fast to the point where I don't even try to pay attention anymore. I'd say study hard outside of class and go to office hours to reap the best benefits.
Chem is incredibly difficult but taking it with Prof Rathnaweera makes it better! She is very sweet and helpful; her lecture slides are pretty organized and cover everything you'll need to know on the exam. Stick to reviewing recitations and practice problems though, because exam questions usually test application rather than memorizing content.
I didn't interact directly with Professor Rathnaweera a lot so I can't say a lot about her personality but whenever I asked questions she was easygoing and understanding! :) Not only that but shes really good at teaching chem. So if your looking for a professor that can teach well. Prof Rathnaweera might be the one for you!
Her lectures were very useful. She was great at explaining things and was willing to go through problems again if students didn't understand. My only issue is that there was so much content to cover in one lecture that it was kind of hard to keep up with the notes, but you'll just have to get used to that. Tests are hard so make sure to study well.
I really liked her. I sat in the second row to force myself to pay attention. I did science guys and honestly thought that the way she explained topics was just as good as the science guys if you keep up with her lectures and do her practice questions. I don't think I needed science guys. Chem moves fast but an A is definitely possible.
I took her T/TH lectures, so more content was covered. Sometimes she rushes to finish slides at the end of class. She posts lots of practice problems (really good for tests!) and online lectures. Always happy to go over material again in class. Uses Squarecap for clicker/participation/attendance grades. Do have to read textbook outside of class.
Dr. Rathnaweera was super sweet and seemed to really care about her students. Chem is tough and no joke but she provides lots of practice problems. Definitely read the textbook before coming to class or you will not understand what's going on as she speeds through the slides. Do the practice worksheets before the tests!!!
Chemistry is just a difficult course at UGA, but Dr. Rathnaweera genuinely gives you multiple resources to be successful in the course. She always provides lots of practice problems and is pretty much always available for help when needed. She makes a difficult class much more manageable.
Dr. Rathnaweera is a caring professor who provides endless practice problems. The lectures can be fast-paced, but she makes up for it with helpful office hours. I found unstuck study great for chemistry study prep alongside the textbook.
Dr. Rathnaweera provides extensive resources to ensure your success. Her notes are very detailed and helpful. She is very sweet and replies quickly to emails. She creates a very comfortable environment in her lectures and is always willing to explain concepts for clarity.
The class is rough, but it's not the professor's fault. She is incredibly willing to work with you and come up with a plan on how to succeed if you're struggling. She makes herself available for office hours and annotates lecture slides for you to study. Class is heavily test weighted, but the ACS final exam will replace your lowest test grade.
I had a terrible experience here with my chem 1 professor but she really helped me to get caught up to speed. Her lectures are amazing and her slideshows have tons of great practice problems. Chem here is extremely difficult in comparison to other classes but she prepares you well and gives you the material you need to succeed.
I have a different teacher now for 1212, but that has made me realize what a gem Rathaweera is. She does lecture a bit too fast at times, but her Powerpoints are SO much better than the other instructors. I never opened the textbook; I just used Science Guyz and her annotated notes and made a solid A in the class. Chem is hard here no matter what.
Compared to my 1211 prof she was Einstein. SOOOO many practice problems! Slides are great. Lectures are way too fast, and her voice is sometimes difficult for me to understand. She's fine, the course structure just sucks. Probably one of the better chem lecturers at UGA, but still not amazing.
Practice problems/slides are great, lectures themselves can be unintelligible (very fast-moving, thick accent, illegible handwriting). Better prof than most for a rigorous class with tricky tests. Get ScienceGuyz!
Dr. Rathnaweera is a great teacher. This is my second semester taking a class with her. Her lectures are excellent, and her notes are very useful. She posts good annotated slides after each class, which are great for studying. If you go through her annotated slides, you'll get everything you need. This course is fast-paced, but that's not her fault
It is very clear that prof Rathwaneera cares very deeply about her students. She was always very upbeat and encouraging in class and was always ready to help answer questions when needed. However, her lectures are extremely fast-paced to fit all the content so it was very overwhelming at times. Definitely look at her annotated slides if you can.
I had her for both chem 1 and 2. I think she's one of the best choices you are going to have for chem professors. She has great slides, tons of practice worksheets, and seems to really care about her students. I think a lot of her downfalls are not her fault, it's more due to the chem department. Her accent can be thick at times so beware of that.
Dr. Rathnaweera is very kind and understanding- she truly cares about her students. She does rush through 1212 content a little, but her practice questions/clickers are pretty good. The class is lecture heavy + you'll need to study outside of class too. Go to her office hours and ask questions after class if you want to do well!
I had high expectations going into Dr Rathnaweera's class. However, I was disappointed by her neglect of emails, rushing through Powerpoints without any explanation of topics, and wasting class time by complaining about being behind (which led to her skipping entire chapters). Graded clicker questions 3 mins after introducing a topic.
1212 seemed easier than 1211, even though I was lazy for this semester, and Rathnaweera is a great professor. Her office hours are always accessible and she knows what she's talking about in class, far more than any other professor I've had. Her slideshows were very detailed and annotated perfectly. Squarecap questions are MCQ or SATA.
Rathnaweera is so sweet! Her annotated slides are incredibly helpful. CHEM1212 is rushed in nature, so you have to spend time studying outside of class. Rathnaweera is extremely helpful during her office hours and never belittles you for asking a question or being confused. Visit her office hours!
Nice lady who cares about her students. She makes lots of time for helping her students outside of class. Her teaching style didn't work for me as well as my past chem professor. She prioritized getting through more types of practice problems fast and not as much of in depth explaining her way through, which could be good for some just not for me.
I found Dr. Rathnaweera to be a very caring professor as she goes out of her way to help her students. Her slides are great and are very helpful for studying for tests. Chemistry is not an easy course but she makes the class quite manageable. Take her!
Dr. Rathnaweera is an amazing chemistry professor. She does move kind of fast in lecture, but that's because the class itself is difficult with a lot of content to cover. She always makes sure that we understand the content and provides plenty of practice questions. I had her for Chem 1211 as well and got an A both semesters. Definitely recommend!
Take Dr. Rathnaweera please!! She is so amazing and caring and her office hours actually saved me in this course. Attendance is key and her lectures are quick but are good (I would recommend looking over them before class). UGA Chem is hard no matter who you have but she makes success so much more achievable. Get the ACS book!!
Can't reccomend her enough. The chem department is tough and makes the chem professors job hard, but she works well with what she is given and takes notice of students struggling and goes out of her way to help if you are willing to go out of your way to help yourself. Always covers all material needed in class but that makes her go crazy fast.
Chemistry at UGA is difficult but Dr. Rathnaweera breaks it down in a way where it is extremely digestible. She has very detailed PowerPoint slides with amazing practice questions that will prepare you for the tests. While her lectures are great and her PowerPoints are detailed she does move extremely fast so be ready to study outside of class.
She moves too fast to be of any use. I didn't want to get Science Guyz and didn't use it for 1211 but it was almost essential as she didn't explain anything and rushed through everything with a thick accent. She does provide a ton of extra practice problems but they only go so far. Go with another instructor. Heide or Seivert are better options!
Rathnaweera is an excellent professor and one of the best I have had at UGA. This course is hard but her notes and activities make it more achievable. It is clear that she truly cares that we not only understand the content, but about us as people. The class moves fast because there's a lot to cover, so it's not her fault at all. Highly recommended
She is a great lecturer and very helpful in office hours. You will absolutely fail this class if you do not attend her lectures and also study on your own.
She's the most mid professor ever, maybe even below mid. I'm glad I've been reading the textbook and doing scienceguyz because our first exam is tomorrow. She still has not finished teaching. She will be teaching 3/4 of the third chapter on the day of the exam. She moves really fast, but sometimes verbally makes sure people are up to speed.
Rathnaweera is a really caring and wonderful professor- her lectures are really helpful, just go to class and pay attention and really try to walk along with her as she teaches and you'll do just fine. Try to understand the reading checks as best as you can before coming to class, she explains, and clarifies the content very well
I love this woman!! She is so good at teaching and explains things well. She is also just so kind and caring. Dr. Rathnaweera makes the chem department slightly less terrible and I love her for that
Rathnaweera is the best chem professor by far. Her ppts are very helpful and she provides tons of extra practice problems.
While UGA chem is genuinely evil I will NEVER diss on Dr. Rathnaweera. She goes through content thoroughly and truly wants you to understand. She's willing to explain anything multiple times and has the best slides set out of all the lecturers. Pay attention in her class and youll succeed. She has an accent tho but not too thick.
Dr. Rathnaweera has made success in this class accessible and achievable. She is approachable, friendly, and genuinely cares about our performance and our education. Her lectures are EXTREMELY helpful, and she takes the time to listen to her students. Plenty of practice during class and resources on ELC. TAKE HER. She's literally my hero.
Chemistry is difficult in general, but this professor explains the content in a clear and concise way while providing an abundance and variety of practice problems. She is also patient and posts everything on eLC including annotated lecture slides. Highly recommend.
This is a difficult class and exams are department wide. However, Dr. Rathnaweera makes the class better. She clearly cares a lot about her students and will help you. She provides lots of resources to practice.
Genuinely cares about her students. Teaches well and makes sure we all understand. Actually goes over all the content that is going to be on the test. gives so many review materials
Professor Rathnaweera is really good at teaching topics. The lectures are a little fast but manageable as long as you show up and pay attention. You can succeed in the class by taking notes and just doing the recitations. There are 4 exams worth the majority of your grade and lowest one is replaced by the final exam.
Professor Rathnaweera should be the easiest pick for gen chem classes at UGA. This class was so light thanks to her slides and all the practice problems she gave. She's genuinely so caring (brought all her lecture classes candy for working so hard) and will answer any question thoroughly that you have. Pick her!!
Dr.R is the best! Chem at UGA sucks but her lectures are so good and going to her office hours really helps! Take her for sure!
Rathnaweera is one of the best chemistry professors- reading checks are done before the class and cover lecture content, her lectures are fantastic, and she makes sure the class understands the topic before moving on. Lots of extra credit, and she wants you to do well and succeed. Know how to study/review and you'll be good.
The chemistry 1 class is a very hard class no matter who you take it with. It is hard to get an A in and will require more studying then previous experiences. However, Rathnaweera did a great job structuring her class to help each student. I enjoyed the way she taught and she is a very kind person willing to help. I am taking her for chem 2!
I would take her if you can! She explains concepts clearly and the top hat questions are only for participation so as long as you're there you will get credit. The class itself is pretty hard but she does her best to make sure you will be prepared. She is also really nice and cares about her students.
I struggled throughout this class due to disorganization, unclear instructions, and limited guidance. I didn't feel supported in understanding the material. Do not recommend, if you have other options!!
Rathnaweera is the best professor I've had at UGA. Chemistry is hard in general, but she explains everything well and supports you in succeeding. She provides a lot of practice and works through problems in class. Her class is super organized, and she's always willing to help you anytime you need it. Definitely take her—you won't regret it!
She is an amazing professor that cares a lot about her students succeeding. Chemistry is very hard, but she is willing to help you. Her office hours are very helpful she is even willing to meet outside of office hours if you need extra help. As long as you go to class and do the extra practice you will be fine.
She genuinely cares about her students, for it being a chemistry class she's definitely one of the better professors in the department. She explains well and provides lots of practice. She uses TopHat is class but grades by participation not accuracy to make sure you're engaged.
Chem itself is insanely difficult. Do not take her if you struggle with heavy accents. I could not understand her. She also FLIES through lectures. I stopped taking notes because she went too fast and took no time to explain things. Attendance required for in-class participation grade. Be ready to self teach because the lectures are pointless.
I love Dr. Rathnaweera! I'm taking her CHEM 1212 too. Thanks for being the best chemistry professor ever! I highly recommend attending her office hours—she is a caring professor who will support you anytime. Chemistry can be hard and fast-paced in general, but she gives you all the material you need to succeed. Take her class; you won't regret it!
In a notoriously terrible chem department, Rathnaweera is a saint. She understands the difficulty of the exams, and posts copious amounts of practice material to help you be ready. The lectures have to be at breakneck speeds due to the content volume, much to her disapproval, and office hours are how she can slow it down for you, so attend them!
Rathnaveera is great! She was super thorough in explaining topics and was very helpful outside of class. The entire chem department provided tons of practice for exams and as long as you do those you should do fine in the course.
Dr. Rathnaveera is very caring but I found it difficult to process a lot of what she was teaching. I recommend using the lectures as review by learning the material that will be taught beforehand. She moves very quickly and doesn't answer questions very well.
Dr. Rathnaweera always made sure to answer any questions that arose during lectures, and provided lots of additional practice resources in her slides and on her eLC page. She is a very engaging lecturer and does not hesitate to help her students. She is great!
Dr. Rathnaweera is an amazing instructor who does her best to break down the department's material as thoroughly as she can within a short time period. Her explanations are precise and easy to follow, and she seems like she really enjoys teaching this subject. This is a fast-paced class, and in general, there's nothing she can do about it.
Dr. R is very nice, and I know she tries as a prof, but I personally found it very hard to keep up with her. I struggled a lot with chem and it was only the final that let me pass it (which UGA doesn't create). She for sure cares about students and wants you to do well, but she's so good at chem that she doesn't get how we aren't.
