Very casual class. Harry is a funny guy who can shoot off into some philosophical tangents sometimes, but they are always funny. Fair tests, always with a review before. One of the best math classes I've ever attended.
Awesome class, easy teacher! Always had Ds in math, now an A. attendance not mandatory but helpful. Homework and quiz once a week. Very helpful&patient teacher. Sometimes confuses with "here's what not to do" but overall, I'd def. recommend taking Harry's classes!!
He's the best math teacher I ever had. He's extremely nice, and reasonable (like he'll try to help you pass even if you have a 0%... ITS POSSIBLE... TRUST ME! just focus on final!!!!!!!!!!!!).
GREAT TEACHER!!! the best math teacher I ever had at CSM, NO JOKE!! hes a funny guy and pretty nice. I really dont like math bt he somehow made it kinda interesting and his teaching methods helped me understand math way better than any other teacher did. I recommend this teacher
Awesome teacher!!! Helpful and has a sense of humor. Just bummed that I can't take his MATH 251 class next semester!
Harry's teaching methods are remarkable. amazing person. will write recommendation letters if you establish a good relationship. Very funny. no joke, makes math a piece of cake. just need to go to lecture. this is just me, but i never did any homework. got A's on the tests, and got an A for both semesters of Calculas. Must take for math.
Harry is one of the best Math professors at Csm. Hmwrk is due every mon. & there is a 2-3 problem quiz. His teachings make sense. Not only does he show you how to solve a problem, he will show you several ways until you understand. His office is always open, which is easy to contact him. Take him because he is the best!
took him for calculus 2 and trust me it wasn't easy goin to class. plays favorite with his students a lot, the tests are hard and the hw is online(some of them arent even solvable)btw he has a thick accent and cracks jokes dat are rather lame.STAY AWAY!
Trust me when I say this. He is very boring. He admits himself he is lazy. Just do not take him. Really..
I was confused most of the time is his class. Don't take him if you want to know the subject. If you just want to pass with minimum effort and you don't care about math, then he'll be your best teacher. Just as lazy as you are...
A really nice guy, but super unorganized. He didn't really go over stuff we needed to know. But he's ok. I think he is alot better in calc than he was for this class.
His lecture is useless. I learned the material by reading the text myself. Students are required to buy the book, but he never used it. Homework is online. His quizzes, exams and final are fairly easy. Most students received good grades.
Gets a little carried away with tangents sometimes, and makes a few elementary mistakes, but he or the class always catches them. Despite this, I still felt he was a really good teacher, and I felt very confident of my knowledge of Calculus in taking this course. Has good office hours, and is always willing to help outside of class too.
Really nice person, not so great at teaching. He doesn't go over the material we need to know on the tests and he's a bit unorganized. His lectures don't correlate with the book which is not helpful at all. Mr. Nishanian will answer questions and has great office hours. Overall, I'd say skip this teacher.
by far the best math teacher i've ever had in my life. awesome guy, awesome teacher! has a little trouble "reading the class" but is great all around. will explain anything until you get it. i am taking him again in the fall.
As a disabled student, he is an amazing teacher. He assigns homework which I don't like but he shows you how to do problems in a variety of ways. Funny and always willing to help his students!
SO unorganized. No one understands what he is talking about. Does not explain anything. I officially hate math, thanks to harry.
i've never really liked math, but i started hating it even more after i took this class. i found it very hard to come to class and on the days that i did, i wish i didnt. he wasnt very professional and i wouldnt take him again.
unorganized. grade based solely on tests and quizzes.
Pretty much makes it so easy to under stand
He is a nice teacher, tests are not easy, online HW, we have quiz every week from HW questions. Final is really easy.
Here's an honest review. I've had this guy for 2semesters (251/252) and he definitely knows his stuff. Calculus is pretty hard so regardless of what professor you choose, its going to be difficult. My advice would be to pick Nishanian. While he may not be the best teacher ever, he's certainly not horrible and he's a pretty laid back guy.
he is the best teacher i have ever had so far on maths...
Professor Nishanian is a great guy. I had him this spring and being a student that has been deathly afraid of math, I felt at ease in his class. He is so very helpful, and thorough. Always willing to stay after class and walk you through the material. I wish that he was teaching Stats in the fall! Take his class, you wont regret it!
I attended his class this past spring and I thought it was really easy (took it before but some odd reason placement test put me there) I know this sounds bad but i barely came to class because of certain circumstances but i was able to finish with an A, all you have to do is understand the online hw and go to the learning center hours.
Prof Nishanian is a great guy, very laid back. Lets you go on the phone and be late, never says a word. Always willing to help and doesn't bash you or anything when you ask questions. Has an accent but no problems to understand him. Homework are around 10 problems per week. Weekly quizzes which contain 2 hw problems. Tests are not hard. Very easy.
Hes awsome!!!!!! explains everythin. Very helpful and always answers questions. If you go to class and actually pay attention and participate its an easy A.
He is a fantastic math teacher. He is one of those who really cares about his students and if they understand the material or not. He explains everything in a way that makes it seem so much easier than one would have expected. I highly recommend this teacher to anyone who struggles in math.
Take this teacher! He is very fair and fun. I worked hard and learned a lot.
I enjoyed his class. He is a good teacher and is very nice. Tests were based off of HW and problems he went over in class.
Harry is the man. He is so helpful and makes math understandable. Discrete Math isn't "fun" but he sure did make it. I went to every class took notes and got a B . His test and quizzes are based on hw problems. If you visit him in his office he will stay there with you until you get it. Take him for every math class u can you will learn & love math
Great professor, very helpful. Boring at times, yes, but so is Calculus for most people. Not too much HW, quizzes weekly or bi-weekly though. Tests are fair, gives you practice test that is very similar to real test a week before. If you struggle, go to his office, he will really try to help you, he's a great guy!
His class is just boring. I feel like as if he haven't prepare the class. The test is sooo easy that we good student and get full mark without listening the class at all. And, when I come up with some tough problems he can not solve it for me. o()o
He can be helpful, but the material is difficult to understand and he didn't go over problems very well. He takes up the entire class period to lecture. Decent amount of hw is given, but it too much is given later on as the semester progresses. Tests were difficult and does not offer extra credit. WOULD NOT recommend.
Harry is the man. Nuff said.
he is nice as long as you have good questions to ask. grading criteria is not exactly clear for math class, and his final was really tough!
He digresses a lot. Math is math, he makes it clear when his office hours are if anyone needs help. He's not super organized, so it's up to you to know what you missed in class. However, he's quite chill! He postponed 2 quizzes because students tell him they won't be able to make class a certain day or simply didn't study. Funny guy.
I've never been good in Math, but I received an "A" in the course. The professor takes the time to explain & work out sample problems on the board in class. Be sure to attend classes, pay attention & take good notes. Most of the quizzes & exams have similar problems from homework & lectures. Has a slight accent, but great teacher and very patient.
Goes through the class work with you. Gives study guides and reviews them if you have any questions. homework every day except day of test.
He is the worst math teacher ever!!!what he was teaching in his long boring lectures has nothing to do with homework problems! He never explained any problems. He never returns your emails regarding to your questions. I've never had anyone who takes his job so carelessly. What a shame for this kind of professor even exists
he will help you if you need it. If you care about your grade, he will too. Super nice guy in general.
Harry is the man. If you treat his class with respect ( pay attention, show up on time, do the work you are supposed to, read the chapters that are assigned ) this is one of the best learning environments that CSM has to offer. This is one professor ( of a few ) that does a great job making students feel comfortable approaching difficult concepts.
He offers lots of realistic examples (things that will be on the "hard" parts of hw and tests) he also answers every question clearly. Math is pretty hard and the class is hard, but he tries to make it easier for you. Pretty funny too
even though attendance is not required, if you are not a master math genius, you can easily fall behind. he can also be disorganized so try to keep track of your own grade. nonetheless, great prof, office hours is very helpful, lectures are not boring (i dont even like math that much).
Little homework. almost no attendance. easy test and easy to get a good grade from this professor. really kind and easygoing man. would like to take his class again.
Professor Nishanian is one of the best Math professors that I've ever had! Not only he's a genuine, down to the earth guy, he's also an outstanding teacher. His style of teaching makes this subject much easier. Learning the material in depth is imperative in any subject; he ensures that all of his students get the subject. Very friendly person.
Good lectures, very knowledgeable, fair exams.
Harry is a legend to say the least. Calc 3 is a tough subject, but it's amazing how he can make it so fun. It's the first interesting math class I've taken, and Harry's style of teaching is really engaging. He always relates things to the bigger picture. It's clear that he has a passion for math, and by the end of the semester, you will too.
Harry is the best math professor I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. He really wants his students to succeed and makes himself easily available. If you plan it right, you can follow him through the whole calculus series. Looking forward to taking 251 this semester.
If you are not a math wizard dont take this class. Allover the place and very hard to follow what is going on.
Harry is complicated because he doesn't know how to make meaningful arguments about linear algebra that make sense. While he is missing solving math can be simple, he is disorganized too. At the end of the semester, you are able to solve linear problems, while you don't know why it works. Try other professors if you care about learning.
Didn't give much homework. Only had two tests before the final and he picks the HARDEST questions for the tests/quizzes. Was easier to go home and learn how to do the problems than listen to the lectures since he doesn't explain well.
I came into this class scared because I took pre-cal two years ago and I remember very little from it; I ended up getting an A in this class. One thing I will emphasize is that prof. Harry is lazy meaning you have to work for your grade. Go to office hours! I cannot stress this enough, he is willing to help if you seek it. Office hours help a lot.
Homework every week online; do it, understand it and you'll pass. There's 2 test that are fairly easy if you understand the homework; If you don't ask for help. His grading is fair, he sometimes drops some problems on the test if he sees the class did poorly. No textbook needed. Can't complain that you failed if you never asked for help.
One word: Amazing!
Having taken many lower and upper div STEM courses, I've dealt with numerous professors. Nishanian is one of those professors that are going extinct - the ones who actually care about the learning of students. Yes he can be lazy in grading, but overall, he's a solid choice as he encourages critical thinking. Last but not least, he's very reasonable
Harry is a fun guy; He is actually really great at going through examples in class, and is quite engaging. His office hours are useful, and he doesn't mind taking time out of class to help his students. He is just a little disorganized at times, so beware of that (online videos helped clarify many topics). But he is super nice.
He's really nice and wants you to succeed. If you look confused all the time, he'll ask if you need help.
First and foremost, Harry is a good teacher--the way he runs his class, however, is beyond abysmal. There's no Canvas page, so apart from what he tells you in class you have no additional resources, he has yet to respond to a single email this semester (which is the only way to reach him) and there's no extra credit. Good lectures but that's it.
Hes one of the best professors Ive taken in CSM. Since I understood the material, I barely went to the class, but he was always so welcoming, which was the best. Hes super easy going and would always ask if you need help. His teaching style is very confusing though. Id definitely take his class again.
Harry is a fantastic math teacher. He's very good at breaking down complex problems and explaining them in east-to-understand ways. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He has a lot of office hours, if you get stuck but isn't always great about answering email (though he was better when we had to move the class online).
Took pre-COVID. Harry was awesome at explaining the material, making sure everyone understood it, and encouraging questions. Provided time in class for group problem-solving too. Not responsive to emails, but always available during office hours to help with questions and problems. Also sometimes disorganized, but it didn't affect the class much.
He's a really nice person and is usually an easy grader. However, I would HIGHLY advice against taking MATH270 with him if he is using Linear Algebra material/texbook developed by Jim Hefferon. If you mainly read the textbook to learn, don't signup. Jim Hefferon's textbook is literally garbage; there's a reason why his textbook is free.
Harry is a SUPER nice guy, very easy to talk to, and really tries to make calc 3 easy to understand. He does make mistakes a lot in his lectures so it can be confusing, but if you ask clarifying questions/check his work it's a lot better. He gives study guides for all his tests and the final which made tests a lot easier to study for. Solid choice.
He's a really nice guy. You can tell that he really cares about his students well-being and wants them to succeed. For example, if you need to stay in class for a bit after a test then he will let you. He also gave me extensions on the homework. I feel like his fun and charismatic personality was the main reason why I don't hate math class.
Harry the goat. Made Calc 3/MATH 253 a breeze. homework webwork. Tests are similar to study guides but are fair. Teaches the concepts really well so you'll understand. Makes a couple simple mistakes here and there but are easy to catch and he prolly the best math professor I've ever had nocap. Going to take him again next semester fasho.
Really nice professor
Nishanian is nice but he has weekly quizzes which can be pretty annoying and the homework is difficult. He also makes a lot of mistakes when teaching and the lectures can be hard to follow. He does record lectures but they are not easy to see and not useable.
He is a really nice professor. He really appreciates your participation and gives chances to those students who are trying. He understands student's problems and tries to help them. I would love to take other classes from him.
Absolute G.
Not a bad guy but his linear algebra class is all about proofs. Take this class with Robert Hasson. His class is all about actual linear algebra and performing mathematical calculations. Pay attention, do homework, easy A.
The professor is nice person, but he over explains things. He scrambles on the board for the whole 2 hours, and it makes me more confused. He doesn't put grades on Canvas, and Canvas is not really organized. I leave class almost everyday so confused. So many people are also struggling in his class.
he would repeatedly say that the tests are easy when they are not easy. The class is not getting an A and the averageis much lower when he doesn't offer makeup tests and gets upset when we ask for them
Don't get me wrong he is a nice man, but man his tests are something, he has only 3 tests where he has the most annoying problems, which none of droppable and don't forget the final, you don't know your grade until like near the drop date, he goes everywhere, unorganized, hard to understand him. If Math is not your strong suit then don't take him.
He's alright, Im not like saying don't take him or take him but I can't understand him he's out of the place.
Nishanian is a great person. He explains the logic of topics by providing proof and solves questions that are similar to the homework. He is always available when you need help, and office hours are very helpful. He cares about his students; talked to me for an hour about university transfer and encouraged me when I told him I had social anxiety.
Man I wish I could take Prof Nishanian again next sem for calc2. Unfortunately he isnt teaching it next semester???? Harry is a cool guy and cares about his students. Sometimes hes all over the place and goes on tangents, but if you actually study the homework and textbook, all of what hes saying should make sense.
Had his summer calc 3 class. Bc summer, is hard and fast. Harry has good lectures, helpful hw, flexible office hrs. Tests are hard, heavily weighted, but no trick questions. Participation counts. Gives practice tests. His course is really interesting, would take again. Practice and its doable. Not easy, but worth it. Learned a lot.
Avoid this math teacher at all cost! The class is disorganized, with a huge gap between lectures, homework and exams. Numerous mistakes make it impossible to follow the lectures. Attendance dropped drastically due to these issues. Learning on your own is a better option to prevent constant stress and confusion.
Professor Harry has great lectures that are taught with a lot of enthusiasm and you can see he cares for the subject. Tests are extremely fair, study guide is very similar to the tests. Not very tech savvy, does not post grades. The reviews that tanked his rating are from people who didn't put the work in (just look at the review length).
Lectures are clear and to the point, but also entertaining as he makes lots of jokes and tells funny stories. He's also very available during his office hours and will offer patient help on your homework. His mannerisms are also very delightful.
Harry is a wonderful professor with entertaining and understandable lectures. He's also very funny and nice; he consistently interacts with the class during lectures, asking questions and going on related tangents to the topics at hand. Harry is also very available outside of class and grades very lightly allowing for easy A's.
He's a great guy and he's really funny as well. The lectures can be a little disorganized and difficult to follow, but if you stay focused you can 100% learn the material; I just made the mistake of not doing that the first 3 weeks. Again though he's really awesome dude!
Nishanian is a great guy who genuinely wants to help. Coming to class could definitely confuse you, but he explains things more clearly in office hours, where he is very accessible. He gives one HW per week, some of the questions are annoying, and there is a quiz every Friday with questions resembling those on the HW. Empathetic guy, take him!
Nice guy but a really terrible professor. Seemed like almost everyone in my class had no idea what was going on. We'd split up to do group work and every time my group (always diff. ppl) could only solve very little. Always solves things incorrectly. VERY unorganized, didn't grade a single assignment until 2 weeks after semester had already ended.
Class time was about 50/50 lecture and group work. If you pay attention and do the homework, you should do well. Very nice guy but lectures can be a little confusing.
I enjoyed his teaching style, which mixed group work with lectures. He showed all his work on the board, which can be a little disorganized, but that did not bother me. Homework was optional, but there was a quiz almost every class that used a few homework problems.
He breaks down fairly complicated concepts very well and grades his tests pretty leniently (setting up an integral correctly but doing the integration wrong got me 9/10 points on one question). You can tell he really cares about his students
Homework isn't graded/required but there's a short quiz every single class. If you miss class it's no big deal b/c attendance isn't graded and he posts lecture recordings on canvas. Lectures can be long and boring but he keeps it fun, plus group work is helpful. He really cares about his students and makes calculus a lot less scary than it seems.
Lots of group work. Long lectures you can fall asleep to. So many quizzes–one per every lecture. Homework doesn't need to be turned in, but if you don't do it, you likely wouldn't understand a thing. Alright professor, but the constant quizzes wears you out.
Great overall professor. Homework was moderate, though not mandatory (though highly encouraged because the quizzes would be carbon copies of the homework). Make sure you understand the material rather than just doing computations was the crux of the course. Tests were completely fair and similar to the practice tests. Lectures being recorded helps.
He is a good professor ngl. His test rate is high, with a final of 35% and no exam drop, but everything else is great. If he made the exam difficult, he would let you do correction and add your quarter of the missing points in your exam. I got a B just because I took a lot of STEM classes in that semester, but if your semester is not heavy, take it
One of the best professors I have ever had. He is so friendly and respectful and make things look easy. He explains very well and makes sure that everything is clear. I loved his class and wish that he gives me the other math classes too!
Harry is one of the best professors I've ever had. He worked hard to make sure everything was taught in a way that would really give us a deep understanding of the concepts. He cares about students and will help you out after class. His tests are fair, he gives lots of time and you'll be set if you do all the practice problems and study guides.
This professor is nice and he explains stuff pretty well. Theres short quizzes at the start of basically every class. Also, the semester is almost over and NOTHING has been put in the gradebook so i have no idea what my grade is. There's groupwork at the end of class usually, but tbh you can leave class whenever and he doesn't rly care.
Really fair grader, understands that mistakes happen. When the class isn't ready for a quiz, he reschedules it and when the class doesn't do well on a test he allows for test corrections. The class is easy to succeed in as long as you actually show up for it, but attendance isn't technically mandatory.
Dropped the class because I did bad on one of the test and most of your grade depends on it. He also doesn't input any grades into the grade book so you have no idea what your grade is.
His lectures are quiet boring and hard to follow. I ended up teaching myself every concept, but it's easier when you have friends in the class. He assigns homework, but instead of grading the homework he gives you quizzes on it. Four total tests, drops the lowest one. Final is 10 questions.
He truly cares about students and explains concepts clearly. Grades come only from quizzes (which you'll have it almost every classes), tests, and the final exam: Homework is optional and not graded. He doesn't post grades until the end, which can be stressful, but he's a supportive professor.
Wkly quizzes worth 20%, 2 exams worth 40% combined (can't drop) and a final exam worth 35% of your grade. 5% misc. Mixed feelings -- likable and is a caring prof (can makeup quizzes you were absent for during o.h.), but understanding lecture can be difficult (was unprepped at times and made fair amount mistakes) --> be prepared to learn on your own
