very knowledgeable and lends an insightful interpretation to the texts...knows how to make a classroom discussion explode (in a good way)
class is not conducive to discussion, it seems like she likes to hear her own voice. won't give any straight answers at all.
Interesting lectures. Very heavy theoretical reading but also interesting novels assigned.
Dr. Mann is a very good teacher. She does not lecture to hear her own voice! She is clear and helpful.Iwill recommend this prof., because you can learn sth new from her, considering she wasn't born in America.Diff.pt. of view is a GOOD THING!
This class is somewhat difficult. If you can handle a teacher saying, "so on and so forth" over and over again, then take her. There is so much reading for this class, but plenty of discussion time.
Prof. Mann, if you can even call her that, did not grade a single paper (7 short ones on the books we read and 2 longer ones...it was writing intensive). She had this dorky idiot TA grading everything. She didn't even show up for the final! AVOID
Interesting course, but little to do with women in literature. Reading is really interesting and all of the quiz questions are covered beforehand in class. Only problem is her comments on papers are not at all helpful probably because the TA grades them
Loved her, Loved her, Loved her!! She is so open and though it was a "fiction" class, we didn't read the typical books that most Loyola Teachers made us read. She was a challenge and I loved every minute of it.
I definitely enjoyed her. The books, like mentioned before, were off the wall. She brought a lot of personal experience to our discussion of the texts so it made things interesting. Must always come to class though
Discussions not helpful. She answers questions with questions. Tough paper grader. Avoid if possible!
TOOK HER IN 2001, BUT SOUNDS LIKE SHE'S STILL THE SAME. LIKES THE SOUND OF HER OWN VOICE. GO TO CLASS & GO FOR HELP FOR PAPERS. TOUGH GRADER.AN EASY B WITH MINIMAL WORK, BUT AN A? NEVER. DISCUSSIONS ARE ENGAGING, SHE KNOWS HER STUFF, BOOKS OKAY. GOOD
This class was taken over the summer of 2004. Worst teacher! Loves to hear herself talk, hard grader and did I mention boring? When they said writing intensive they meant it!! Be prepared to work your tail off for a lousy grade. Avoid at all costs!!
She teaches the same course over and over again. Get some new material, lady. They could just tape record one of her courses and replay it and save the money from her salary.
Prof. Mann teaches an interesting class and brings many alternative literary influences from around the world into her course. She grades harder than some, but if you can think of an original criticism to write about for your papers, you're set for an A.
DO NOT TAKE
HARD GRADER!!!!!!!!!
If you like literature, the class is definately interesting, but she's a really hard grader. No matter how much time and effort you put into quizzes and papers you won't get above a B. She's nice, but I had mixed feeling about her class.
felt like i was in a class as an engl major when i'm not one......thought it was very difficult for a core class
pretty tough grader...class itself isnt too bad, plays are pretty interesting. If you just spit back the usual race/minority, women and sexuality stuff back to her youll be fine. Gotta read the plays, there are no cliffnotes for most of them. She wants you to read deeper and not just know the plot.
She is brilliant instructor because she reveals greater knowledge about cultures and literature from around the world. I would recommend taking her, however, she is taugh. Write as much as possible on your quizes. Repeate your notes for the term paper.
A good class to learn study habits and gain writing skills. Don't take it for the literature, as the class moves too fast to really explore them. Do regular external research on the readings with the resources she mentions in the begining and you've got a decent shot at an A. Be specific in your writings. Quote as much as you can.

It's a pretty easy class as long as you agree with white male bashing. If you don't, the class isn't worth taking.
Dr. Mann is a brilliant professor, but she expects a lot from her students. My writing and critical thinking skills have improved due to her engaging way of challenging students. This class is tough though, very theoretically oriented research papers required. Best English clas I have yet taken.
Teaches this class almost at a grad course level. Extensive outside research recommended, but you better do it to participate in the discussions. Participation=crucial. Literature is analyzed in the context of the theoretical approaches of the time. The books are interesting, but follow the same pattern of bashing colonialism and Eurocentrism.
she speaks english better as a second language than i do as a first. that being said, she is often unrealistic in her expectations. have at least 5 people look over your papers before turning them in in her courses.
Worst teacher I have ever had, honestly. I took this for core which was a bad idea because this shh was so hard. I worked my butt off for a fricken C+. We read so many books and barely even talked about them. And basically she's annoying as heck, the way she looks, talks and acts.
Beware Beware...only take this class if u dare!!!
She is an incredibly brilliant woman with a lot of great insights to the books we read. However, she expects way too much out of her students. I felt this course alone should have been worth 18 units with all the work involved. It added more stress to my life than I care to think about - limit other classes if you're taking her!!!
Not a brilliant teacher. She is full of herself. Very tough grader and very difficult to please. She never cliarifies topics and expects students to already know the discussion topics. Students who are not English majors but need to take this class beware! Discussions are disoriented. She does not have to offer her view-points ever.
excellent teacher
i had her for asian lit. she assigns the worst books to read and God, do her discussions stink. don't take her. she grades unfairly, has no interest in helping her students, and seems determined to flaunt her so-called knowledge of asian lit when she's so wrong half the time. i don't recommend her at all.
Never ever take her as writing intensive. the worst prof. I have ever not had the pleasure of taking. so much work and reading then I couldn't even keep up with my other classes. her teaching needs to be audited by the dept. because she is not doing a good job. she is an extremely hard grader and very slim chance of getting above a B-
Wonderful class and an amazing prof. She is difficult and there is a lot of reading- though it is very good. You can't get away with bs-ing your way through but it is a well worthwhile class. I recommend to anyone who is serious about literature. She is brilliant.
I do not recommend this "so-called" woman at all! She told me that I was the worst writer ever and that I should never write again! Isn't that funny because now I am an English teacher! And let me tell you, I did not get an interest in the profession from her!! If you want to learn nothing and earn a bad grade, then this is the professor to tak
By the looks of the comments previous to mine, I would surmise that there are a lot of students looking for fluffy beach read, waiting eagerly for Oprah to tell them which book to read next. If you like a class with substance and can get your head out of Paris Hilton's latest scandals, take Mann's course. You will be bettered by it most certainly.
I would not recommend Mann. She is a very, very tough grader. She has too high of expectations for a 200 level course. She expects you to write 2 pages worth for quizzes that are only worth 5 points each. She seems to always have an attitude. I liked all of the readings, just did not care for her.
Prof. Mann was extremely knowledgeable. She goes over information multiple times. As long as you read the texts, show up to class, and write your paper (she spends many days of class going over paper expectations) you will be fine. If you don't feel like giving any effort, you might not do well. But if you at least try you will learn a lot.
THIS TEACHER IS HORRIBLE, NEVER EXPLAINED WHAT SHE WANTED FOR HER PAPER... AND WHEN I DID PICK A TOPIC A FEW OF THEM ACTUALLY SHE DOWNED IT RIGHT AWAY!
This professor is horrible. It is shameful that Loyola employs her. She wants to give the students the worse grade possible. She is also very disrespectful and condoscending. Very bad do not take the class unless you want to be disrespected, and have low grades since she is mischeveous
I have to say, I learned a lot from her class. There were thought-provoking discussions and fascinating books, with real quality. That said, she does not easily give As.You have to work very hard for the grade you earn, but if you are willing to take criticism, you will improve. It is not a waste of time to take her class.Still w/A work, expect Bs
This professor is a benefit to the university! I learned a lot from her and to appreciate the novels we read. I hate writing and I have an ok grade but I can't hate on her b/c she makes your tuition worth it.
When she kids about checking her out on ratemyprofessor.com and asking why you still decided to take the class, its because she knows the negative comments are true.
Dr. Mann is an asset to Loyola! The books she used and her related discussions were meaningful and thought-provoking, and she knows her****. She might be a hard grader, but you get the grade you deserve. I'd have to say that of all the classes I've taken, hers has made the most impact on me.
Avoid her at all costs!!!! Her discussions are useless. Everything used for quizzes and papers needs to be found independently outside of class. She's a picky grader and nothing you do will ever suffice. Seriously, I spent 8 hours writing a 2 page paper for this woman! I got an A but it was the hardest I've ever had to fight for a decent grade.
She is a fair teacher, expects you to develop your literary criticism throughout the semester. Class participation is a must. She is a very fair, almost easy, grader. Her exams are not terribly difficult if you have read the books. I would suggest her for anyone that is looking to increase their literary criticism skills, as she is willing to help.
Professor Mann is a fair grader. Work hard and you will get a good grade. She expects active discussion in each class, and expects you to get readings done on time. All in all I'd recommend her. She will help you improve your critical reading skills.
Very good teacher. Has lots to say and diverges a lot, but if you like English than you'll love it. Not a difficult grader, focuses on developing your skill rather than testing it. One big research paper, be original. I recommend the her.
Keep up with readings and you will enjoy the in class discussions. Otherwise you will have no idea what's going on. Dr. M is kind and willing to negotiate paper due dates and quiz dates, as long as you have legit reasoning. Actually, that's BS. You don't need any good reasons. She's just nice and pushes back the due dates! :)
This is not the class for people who want a serious exploration of serious literature. It is utilizes simple books that Dr. Mann, a brilliant woman, tries to pull meaning out of, but in the end no one could. If you're looking for an easy class out of which you won't really get anything, take this.
This class is worthless. Books I read in fifth grade. I can't believe she is allowed to attempt to pretend these books should be taught on the college level. Waste of a semester and a disappointing insight into how thoroughly anti-intellectualism has penetrated English academia. Never, never take unless you want to learn nothing.
Prof Mann is amazing! She deserved tenure. She really new how to teach a concept that many of us had no idea about, the SouthAsian Diaspora. Her comments on papers are constructive and she is always willing to meet and discuss papers. Two 7-10 page papers and one final, where we had to write an essay. We had 7 books and had ample to discuss them.
Dr. Mann was definitely a challenge. There are only two papers and a written final exam, which leave little room for error. Coming in to the class, I considered myself a very good writer. However, her class completely challenged me in a very different way. I did poorly on the first paper (C+), but worked really hard after that, and ended with an A-
Good class with good books. Some of the readings are challenging, and the articles are long and dense but not usually required. Having said that, she is a great professor. Always willing to help students in any way possible. Not really an easy grader, but not too harsh either. Only three assignments though so there is little room for error.
Sweet professor, expects you to do good. 4 papers, some quizes on the reading and a final
Your grade is from 2 papers, participation and quizzes (6). She has really helped me to be a better writer and critical reader. She is also a chill lecturer and very willing to meet and look over drafts/outlines. This has been the most rewarding class I have taken at Loyola. I highly recommend taking any course with Mann.
I LOVED Dr. Mann. She knows her stuff and presents the material in a clear and effective way. She has a good sense of humor and grades pretty easily, and the assignments are totally doable. I plan to take her again if I can. At times, she can be a bit condescending, but that's just because she's actually better than us.
One quiz per book, very easy. She expects writing to integrate historical, cultural, social or other factor. She posts a variety of these sources online. Her class is very interesting.
Her lectures are SO unorganized to the point where it gets frustrating. I had no idea what was expected of me to know. Two papers and a final. The final was dumb. Her expectations for homework are ridiculous considering she doesn't quiz you on the readings AT ALL. Over all, no hard to pass this class but it was a pain in the butt. Do no recommend.
I took Dr. Mann at PSU Fayette in 1987 fro a summer Business Writing course. She was awesome. Very clear and detailed. I think Disney used her as the model of Princess jasmine in Aladdin
Absolutely loved having her as a teacher. She is very knowledgeable on her subject. Only two papers and two exams as your entire grade. Not too hard on grading but you do need to put in effort to get a good grade.
Dr. Mann would be a much better math professor than a literature professor. Instead of letting the discussion flow organically, she drags the discussion out until somebody brings up the point she wanted to talk about. In her class, I've learned about the stories we've read, but not how to analyze stories myself. She's nice, but her style is awful.
2 Exams-Midterm and Final are in class essays. A Midterm paper and a Final paper are somewhat like research papers. She is extremely intelligent and tends to use post-colonial and non-Western texts. She sets the bar high but is actually a very lenient grader. Not a class for small minded people.
Dr. Mann was a good teacher, but she often attempts to lead the class to an answer that you are not gunna get. She expects you to attach cultural issues to specifics in the texts. Oh, and she picks HORRIBLE texts. Its a struggle to get though them, but not because they are all that difficult, just DEPRESSING.
Overall Dr. Mann is a great professor, she's extremely knowledgeable about postcolonial literature and enjoys discussion, but you have to be ready to participate. She's very willing to help and is a pretty easy grader, but there are only three assignments so you have to be careful. She has a great sense of humor, but can be intimidating
Dr. Mann is such an amazing professor. She picks awesome texts that will really put you outside of your comfort zones both literary and cultural. If you love passionate discussions about literature, you will love this class. She is also a really reasonable grader, while still pushing you to do your best. I learned so much from her!
Dr. Mann is a great woman and a great professor. She clearly outlines her expectations and as long as you keep up with the reading, its not a bad class. Theres one quiz per book and a midterm and final research paper. I would definitely recommend Dr. Mann to anyone looking to take an english course.
This class is very hard but worth it. Prof Mann will make you write a LOT but gives good feedback. She seems like the hardest professor in the world, but if you try you will get a good grade. Cares about all her students deeply and will meet you outside of class. You must read a lot, but your writing will improve immensely. Be ready to learn.
Very engaging class for English and non-English majors. Only 2 papers, but lots of reading. I loved the books but I'm an English major so take that with a grain of salt. She offers very insightful perspectives on the texts and life in general! Very caring teacher, was very understanding when I had to miss class for personal issues.
I chose to take Dr. Mann's class with the expectation that it would be a progressive class with an open dialogue about important social and political commentary. She was an amazing lecturer and if you put in work on the reading it pays off. I would highly recommend this class for students looking to be pushed to excel.
I really wanted to like this class, but it fell flat for me. Dr. Mann seldom allows students to speak in class, frequently gets off topic, and seems to preach more than teach. I got an A in her class, but I don't think I'm the better for it.
Very kind teacher. She treats you with respect and is always willing to help and answer your questions. She is also very knowledgeable on a variety of topics and is passionate about the subjects she teaches. Having a kind and caring teacher like Professor Mann makes the class more enjoyable. I would recommend this class if you like to read a lot.
Wonderful teacher! Took her online ENGL class and it was difficult in the sense that you had to read 5 stories in 6 weeks, but it's manageable. Professor Mann is very caring and responds to emails quickly.
I'm an English Teacher now at a Jesuit High School. I'm having my class read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. This and the syllabus in Harveen Mann's class was incredible. This is one of the most pertinent classes you can take at Loyola if you want to truly understand the world and literature better. Tough books that you will remember foreve
Dr. Mann is easily the best professor. People say she's tough, but what they mean is she is very solid, has high expectations, but is still a human who is willing to listen and help as much as you need. She is always extremely prepared and knowledgable on the subject and very woke: don't expect a single boring lecture. Wish I could take her again!
Dr. Mann is an inspiring woman and professor. She is very passionate about what she teaches and is not afraid to give her opinions on any and all subjects. She has a tendency to get off topic, but her lectures are extremely interesting. Solid choice for an honors class.
Mann deeply cares about her students and gives direct feedback to every student prior to and post-papers. She has a real, honest humor and isn't afraid to speak her mind. I look forward to this course. There are quizzes on the reading, but she covers each book beforehand. Would recommend to ANYONE as your tier 2 class.
Dr. Mann is the sweetest woman. She is always caring and helpful. As someone who doesn't like to read, the books keep you interested and are different from what you'd read in other ENGL 290 classes! 2 papers, a quiz for each book, and a final in class essay. Her lectures are amazing and she isn't afraid to voice her opinion. Incredible woman!!
Was an interesting class. Had a lot of books to read, and a couple of papers, with quizzes for each book you read. Gave good feed back and papers and was helpful when choosing topics and writing, would take again.
Dr. Mann is great at what she does. There's a lot of assigned readings, but they can get done in the time she expects. She's diligent, stern, but very understanding and helpful. Show up to class, do well on the quizzes (by reading or at least going over the notes), and get help if needed and you'll do well!
We read several novels that i probably would not have otherwise considered, and so thoroughly, that i would surely have regretted if we hadn't.
Professor Mann is an amazing teacher. She cares about each of her students and wants them to succeed. She grades fairly. Only 2 papers and a final paper for her class. Quizzes on each book which are fair if you read. Keep up with reading and participate in class discussion and you should be fine.
Dr. Mann is FANTASTIC!! She's an incredible lecturer and picks the best books. Great at close reading and providing fascinating historical context. Take any class you can with her!!
She is such a great professor. She really cares about every student, and her lectures are so interesting and relevant to whats happening in the world. The class does move pretty quickly, so make sure you keep up to date with the reading, and you should be fine. Besides quizzes, theres only 2 research papers and a final in class essay.
I loved Professor Mann's online class! There were five novels for a six-week online summer class. We had to write a short reflection each week, and then there was a midterm, final and research paper. So, quite a bit of work, but honestly one of my favorite classes and it's worth it. The lecture was heavy discussion based so I would do the readings.
Dr. Mann is a great professor who really shows she wants you to succeed. Actively reading the texts is necessary in order to succeed but she chooses ones that are interesting, socially relevant, and unique. The course is structured well and gives you many chances to receive feedback on how you can improve your writing and analytical skills.
I loved Dr. Mann, the books we read were unique and she was so passionate about her lectures. I feel like everyone should be required to take her class to learn more about being a citizen in this world. That being said, you are going to have to read the books and work a little, but if you do it will be clearly reflected in your grade.
Dr. Mann is a sweet lady and definitely knows what she is talking about. The class is made up of a midterm and final (25pts each), 4 forums (1pt each), Paper (40 pts) and 6 points attendance, so a total of 100 pts. Definitely hard to secure an A, which is why i ended with a B+. She is a relatively easy grader tho, that helps. Overall, good.
Really great class with a lot of reading and a lot of work but overall very worth it and learned a lot!
Need to read the books, which usually weren't long but you have to read them. Very discussion-heavy abt. texts. There are participation points, quizzes, & a few essays, but she's a kind grader and really wants you to learn. TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!! She's a great professor/person (which is an understatement) and I'd take it again if I could.
Took this course for as a J- term to complete my tier 2 core credit. It was fairly easy if you had a lot of time to listen to the lectures and read all the books. Overall was a really good class.
I took Dr. Manns J Term ENGL 290 class online, with no live lectures. We were assigned 5 books between 100-200 pages, definitely start reading before the class starts. That said, definitely listen to online background lectures as they make things make way more sense. Youll have to work but I usually hate English and I would absolutely take her 2x
Harveen Mann is one of the best professors I have had the privilege of learning from at Loyola. I only regret not putting more priority into her class, because the novels we read were always intriguing, the information we were learningamazing, and the discussion we were having? Eye-opening. Take her if you can!
Your whole grade is based off of 3 papers which she grades very hard. Her lectures are just her rambling and very hard to pay attention to. Do not take her class, you have to work very hard to impress her with your papers, but that might not even be enough.
Dr. Mann was an excellent professor. Her class was difficult, but engaging and worth it! She cares about her students and is willing to do so much to help you through the class. Shes passionate about her class, and about social justice issues. I HOPE Im able to take her again in the future.
Amazing professor! 6 novels, short essay forum posts, and 3 essays. Read on time, attend class, and take notes. It is work, but very doable! While it might be intimidating in class, Dr. Mann does everything to make sure you understand the reading and connect it to issues going on today. She's always available to answer questions. Take her class!
Dr. Mann is one of the best professors Ive had the privilege of taking. I was thoroughly surprised by how much I enjoyed the readings. She is willing to help her students and listens to students opinions on the course. I can not recommend her enough. The course grade is based on 3 papers, a forum post for each book, and attendance/participation.
Dr. Mann is engaging, intelligent, and caring - all of the things you want in a professor. If you read and at least try to make your writing interesting you'll do fine. The course is comprised of participation (10%), forum posts/quizzes/or one project (20%) a midterm (20%), and a final (25%). You read 6 texts. Take Mann. You won't regret it!
Amazing professor who knows a lot about the subject and has been teaching for a long time. Cares about the students and loves to help with essays. There are three essays worth 20-25% of your grade and you read 6 books ranging from 100-200 pages. If you stay on top of your reading it's a fairly easy B+ or A! Highly recommend it for tier 2 English.
Dr. Mann is absolutely worth taking. She chooses important books that come with important lessons and be prepared to read 6 of them throughout the semester, but do it!!!! She brings so much insight and creates valuable conversation in her classroom environment.
Dr. Mann is absolutely amazing and one of the few English professors that is concerned with the struggles at intersections of various identities. I learned so much from her course! She did everything in her power to make the course easier for us from giving class-wide extensions to giving us her phone #. She loves her students and it shows.
Dr. Mann's class was consistently enjoyable, challenging, and thought provoking. She truly cares about helping her students do well and learn. This was one of the only classes where current events were explicitly discussed and integrated into lectures. Excellent experience!
Dr. Mann knows the books and authors inside and out, along with so much relevant history and culture. She pushed us to think deeply and critically, but did so with care. She demands excellence and supports her students to get there. This class changed the way I read and think about literature.
Dr. Mann is awesome. At first, she came off a bit intimidating but she has a great sense of humor. The books she assigns are very thought provoking and they force you to step outside of your comfort zone. Just read the books and pay attention and you will learn a lot!!
Dr. Mann is wonderful professor. Shes very opinionated, but dont be intimidated. She loves when students offer meaningful discussion and she genuinely cares, even though it may not seem like it. If you need help, she will give it. Dont be afraid to advocate for yourself, she will respect you for it.
Dr. Mann is an inspirational professor whose extensive knowledge about the books and subjects will truly push you outside your comfort zone to think critically about the subject matter. She comes off a little intimidating at first, but she genuinely wants you to succeed and cares for you as a whole. She is flexible with due dates and open to ideas.
I truly enjoyed Professor Mann, She was fantastic and truly offered a variety of perspectives on the subject matter. participation is readily expected so if you thrive in those types of environments you will do well in this class. She is very open and kind about due date. Very caring, invited whole class to thanksgiving at her place!
I had her for Honors 209C . She's the BEST. She was available outside the class anytime I needed her. She is caring and thoughtful. I highly recommend taking her. You won't regret it. I wish she taught more Honors classes.
Took Dr Mann for jterm. Definitely a ton of work and you need to put a lot of work into her class, but I learned so much in those 2 weeks so I don't regret it. Intimidating at first but super sweet once you reach out, she cares so much and will help with anything you need. Don't hesitate to shoot her an email, she wants to help!
Instructor Harveen Mann didn't specify on the syllabus what sections or chapters of the required literature we needed to have read by what date which stunted class discussion. Along with this, there weren't any opportunities to talk to classmates about the content we were learning because she often just ranted about her political agendas.
Dr. Mann is a highly knowledgeable about the books read in class and about life. Comes off as intimidating but is very kind. She expects students to finish reading the book before class discussions begin which requires a lot of work. Unfortunately, I had to drop due to a heavy course-load this semester but I would love to take her class again.
Participation is important. Come to class prepared and spend a decent amount of time outside of school completing assignments.
Professor Mann is very knowledgeable and is amazing at sharing her knowledge with her students. Her lectures are engaging and informative. Professor Mann wants all of her students to succeed and she gives clear/helpful feedback. As long as you come to class, pay attention, and participate, you should have no issues. Great professor & great class!
Dr Mann changed the lens through which I see the world and developed my understanding of the diservice that is a Eurocentric curriculum. Her lectures make you want to read the book so you can understand the connections she makes. My sole qualm is that she did not give much feedback on papers. I hope to take another class with Dr Mann!
Dr. Mann is passionate about what she teaches, is more than knowledgeable, and more than willing to help you. I loved and appreciated how much clarity she provided for her assignments. Be prepared for class and ready to participate. If you can do that, you will be more than fine. Dr.Mann's teaching style is simply impeccable as well. A+ from me!
She is extremely passionate about what she teaches and how she engages with students, and definitely made me become a better writer in general. Take advantage of meeting with her during office hours to look over paper drafts, it helps a lot. She is difficult but wants you to succeed. Take her and you'll definitely get something out of the class.
so smart, great lecturer. each book read is powerful. she unfortunately deals with very heavy topics. it is very difficult to look past how insensitive she can be and i wish she took more care in discussing topics especially such as assault. be ready for heavy and blunt discussions, and if you have experience with such things i don't recommend her.
I didn't know what I was missing from my English classes before taking Dr. Mann's classes. She really challenges students to write more academic & complex papers and really supports you during the development process. I never once looked at the clock during her lectures, because they're so captivating!
The class is focused on six historical fiction books about South Asian modern history. Basically every class is a TedTalk on religion, racism, immigration, foreign policy, and trauma. Sometimes the books are hard to get through, but she's funny and really cares about students and grades easy so you can focus on getting the most out of the class.
Dr. Mann has become my favorite professor at Loyola! She is caring, intelligent, and hilarious. In class, we read six contemporary novels relating to some aspect of South Asian culture, history, and/or experience. While the topics are tough, the class is very enlightening. 100/10 recommend.
Dr. Mann is tough but really cares about her students. Her lectures are super engaging and you will come out of the class with a totally new outlook on the world. Work is limited to reading a book every 2-3 weeks and 2 6-page essays. She's a tough grader but will work with you to help you get the grade you want.
I absolutely loved Professor Mann's class. She had us read select books and have discussions upon them every class. It was a great way to learn history while connecting it back to humanity. She's super funny and has great lectures. There is 1 midterm and 1 research paper but she's lenient with grading. An eye-opening class which you'll learn a lot!
Dr. Mann is an amazing professor. The course material was super interesting, but be aware that the class moves very quickly. She expects students to read each novel (normally around 150 pages) in 1-2 days. But it is possible! Gives good feedback, but her handwriting can be very difficult to read. She is always willing to help though!
Professor Mann is intimidating at first but is a very caring person. Is willing to extend deadlines and works with students. Not a tough grader and I believe that how she grades is fair. Wants to expand her students' perspectives. Take her is writing/literature is not your strongest subject.
Dr. Mann really shows that she cares about what she is teaching. She makes great connections between the readings, historical topics, and modern issues. Be prepared to read a few novels throughout the semester, but nothing too long or laborious to read. Sometimes a little forward and brash, but overall a kind and insightful professor.
Mann's lectures are hilarious and insightful. She tears apart phony authors and critics and inserts great and relevant anecdotes about her own life. The books are all incredible, and worth your time. You will have to read a whole book in a week sometimes, which is the biggest challenge. She pushes you to do your best. I love her class.
I actually had a misconception as to what the subject of the class was, but I was pleasantly surprised how interesting the course content actually was in part because Dr. Mann is an amazing professor. This class really teaches you more than you expect, both in terms of course content and valuable life lessons. Highly recommended, would take again.
I took this over J-Term and for a 10 day class, I had to read 5 short novels, one midterm essay exam, one final essay exam, and a 6 page research paper. Definitely a lot of work, but as long as you keep up with it and make the time, you will do well. Prof. Mann is super kind and caring, so reach out with any concerns. She even extended a due date!
Absolutely incredible professor. If you have the chance to take a class with her take it, I took her for my Tier II Literature core and it convinced me to change my major to English. Can't recommend this class enough.
The class was fairly enjoyable and easy, but Professor Mann can be a bit abrasive at times. It often felt like she was trying to push her personal opinions onto us as fact, which made it hard for me to engage with the lectures. The lectures can be a bit dry and long as she doesn't use power point, and you have to read a book almost every 2 weeks.
Doctor Mann is the best professor in the department at Loyola. The course covers 6 books with one midterm essay/exam, one final research essay, and one final essay exam. Her lectures cover criticism, praise, and historical context of the novels and make you think critically. Her intelligence made me love literature again. I cannot recommend enough.
Professor Mann runs an engaging course. The readings are manageable, and her lectures are informative. Using resources like unstuck ai helps with study prep. Overall, a rewarding class that is worth taking.
