He knows what he's talking about but he talks way over your head
can't explain things very well sometimes, hard to sit through 2 hours of lecture
It is difficult to stay awake for his lectures, but he tries
Harv is great teacher and a friendly person. He really cares about his students
Harv is the man. He is the best teacher I have had so far, he does it all.
He is a very smart man, and very nice too. He is helpful too!
No structure to lectures/notes. Does no review. I wouldn't take him again.
nice guy, bad teacher. Too smart for his own good, no review, no lect. struct.
unclear, not very helpful, dosen't review, very dull, don't take his class

Four Words: "Don't take his class"
Great guy, OK teacher. You Will have to WORK to learn- it is not spoon fed.
Hard class. Have to study lots. Not easy to talk to one on one.
He trys hard, 109 seems boring for him, goes way over your head, willing to help
To advanced for the class
has no structure to anything..teaches 109 like it's a level 400, DON'T take him!
worst class i've taken at GVSU!!! cant teach and is VERY unclear
He's a great prof. He had a passion about what he was teachin. Little difficult
Great guy i would take him again he cares about his students
Hated him, tests were not what he lectured on, I heard Tanis is better. Take him
HARD! Not a good teacher, Leonard is much better.
lectures were sleepers, but class was easy and I even learned a little
Great guy! Little time for test, and some possible answers on tests are traps!
Very hard class! Nikkel is best at explaining, nice guy.

Good teacher, not easy class. this is college, no spoon feeding.

Smart man, tough class, not very helpful
Simple lectures, demanding tests, willing to meet with you for help.
Very smart, bad thing. No practice exams, or ne thing tests way too hard
He's nice, but very hard. Get a tutor or a study group if you get him.
Teaches like its a 400 level course and everyone's life revolves around CHM.
Stay away
Good prof, nice, but tests are hard, you need to study. He's much harder for biochm
VERY HARD TESTS!!! Can understand material, but he makes it too hard
easy class, taught material well
Note aids for lecture do not prepare you for his hard a... tests.
I HATE CHEMISTRY! There's way too much info covered in biochem
Super nice guy, does his best to make things easier, but doesn't spoon feed
HARD FRICKEN CLASS! TOO MUCH INFO!
Hard class. But he gives you the info. It is up to you to learn it. Alot of info, and a hard topic, but this IS college. Harvey is a good guy and tries to teach a hard class well. He is smart as hell and cares about students.
Professor Nikkel is a nice guy and tries to make the class as easy as he possibly can. It is a hard class with a lot of info crammed into a semester. Work hard and the class is passable.

The class is really hard, but he tries to keep everything as easy as possible. He understands that the class is hard, and he is always willing to help you out.
Study from old tests and you'll do fine!
He's very good. It is a hard class, but he tries his best to put it in easy terms. Gets test grades back to you ASAP.
I like Dr. Nikkel! It is a tougher class, but that is to be expected! Dr. Nikkel made me take interest
good teacher but hard class...study study study
Hard class, but Prof Nikkel is a great guy. He makes it as interesting as possible, and is always there to help. Posts grades from tests in a matter of hours. Great guy. If you have to take this class, he is the one to take it from. Good luck!
Professor Nikkel makes a hard class as easy as possible but you still MUST study...hard! He'll give you the tools to get the A but you have to earn it. An overall high quality prof.
It's the hardest class i've ever taken!! i've never gotten a C before this. but he does drop the lowest quiz grade and the lowest test score. he's really nice!! but i just don't speak chemistry fluently.
This class is REALLY hard. He is SO smart. Way too smart. I had no clue what he was saying. I have no recommendation. But, he is going on sabatical.. so no need to worry!
Biochem is simply a HARD CLASS. Professor Nikkel tries his best to teach it, but its just difficult. Use everything you can; his class notes, his note aids, and the book. I would recommend trying to get someone else for this course-goodluck.
I have never gotten a B before until this class! He is very helpful, but his tests are too in depth for the amount of time given(exactly 50min). I learned a lot, but I would suggest a different prof if you want to keep your sanity!
Nikkel is a very nice guy, but not easy at all. Biochem will be one of the hardest classes, and memorizing will get you nowhere. Study hard-good luck!
BioChem took over my life. I seriously had to study for 20 hours a week just to get a B. The first two tests are the hardest too, and the class average was about 64% for one of his tests.Professor Harvy is HARD
Very smart man, but I felt completely lost. However, he will drop your lowest test and let you make a cheat sheet for the exam which brings the grade way up. I ended up with a B but was in a panic the whole semester. SO SO HARD.
This guy was impossible. Chemistry is hard enough, but you add him into the mix and it really is impossible. On one exam, the class averaged a D and he just stood at the front of the class and laughed it up. No curve.
great prof.lots of info and study time required.tests were often posted by the time i got home, he even emails you with info and updates.very caring man.there were many low scores and many people droped. doing well on the bonus will help you.good luck.
nice guy, but very hard class don't take with other classes that will also be time consuming... it is a big load
Um....RUN! Ok, so the guy is smart and all, but he just expects you to learn way too much material in too little of time. This class made me feel like a complete idiot! Take it with Wallar if possible. ahhhh!
nikkel is a very caring guy, who is rather funny. study and memorize. ask questions if you dont understand. definitely a big load. lots of studying, but isnt that what we are here for? i liked him. he is a nice guy.
I loved him! He is a very nice, caring guy...almost like he's a grandpa figure :) The actual class is hard, but thats just BIOCHEM! No matter who you have its difficult!
Professor Nikkel is wrapped up in Biochem and can't get back to reality. He sort of lectures with incomplete and unorganized notes at a million miles an hour. Forget the teaching thing though, you'll spend countless hours and tears doing that yourself.
BIOCHEM is a tough class! He's very nice and helpfull. Be ready for this class from the start. There is a lot of material involved and you must keep up to be sucessful. Nikkel is willing to help if you go and see him. STUDY HARD!Don't miss a class.
He is nice, but he is unclear in lectures, which are all over the place. Exams are so hard, hope you do multiple guess well.
This class is the hardest class i have ever taken. Impossible to pass. Talks very fast in lecture and goes through material to quick. If you pass you must be a good guesser
He teaches the class like he's teaching a room full of chemists. If you are currently a chemist, you will have no problem. If you are not a chemist, you will be lucky to get by with a C+. Aside from that he's actually a really nice guy.
Nice guy but VERY hard class. Jumps around in lecture, tests are impossible. Prepare to dedicate your life to studying. Will help if you go to office hours though. Good luck.
scary class but just study hard and you'll be fine
He is a very nice guy! but he teaches his class on a much higher level. The exams are extremely difficult, and it was very hard to know what to study because they are over everything. Always go to class, because if you miss even 1 day of lecture your screwed.
Nice guy but you will have to do a LOT of work for this class. But if you read the book do all the problems and never miss a class it actually isnt all that hard to get a decent grade. He is very passionate about chemistry and will help if asked!
very smart guy, teaches at a higher level. Class is interesting, sit up front, you hear extra things that others dont hear for tests and quizzes. if you study the note aids, read the book, go to EVERY class&discusion, go to office hours, get extra help, and study for many hours a week. You'll be fine
Funny Guy... a wealth of knowledge and true the class is hard but he makes it interesting. Just study hard and sit up front
Very hard class, studied my ass off for the whole semster and struggled in my other classes because of it. Dr. Nikkel does not teach this class like an intro level course, should not be teaching at this level! Smartest professor I have ever had, but also by far the worst as well.
Worst prof i have ever had, the hardest class ive ever had, very unclear and impossible to pass, take a different prof!!!!!!
Do not take him no matter what. Very hard class and impossible to pass. DO good on your lab and quizzes bc over 1/2 fails the tests!!!!!!1
Real nice guy, very intelligent. This class is hard no matter what, I dont think any teacher could make it easy, fun, or any combination of the two.
He is a very tough teacher. When he says he is tough when it comes to the C-/C cutoff he is not kidding. I know several people who were .01% away from a solid C and he WOULD NOT GIVE IT TO THEM!! And they had to retake the class b/c of that. Be prepared to work your butt off and memorize his nots and the objective questions. Good luck!
come on you guys... hes a great prof., of course its going to be a tough class. it would be at any college or with any prof he expalins this beatifully and yes you do have to study hard but thats what college is... STUDYING
The class is hard, but Nikkel is nice. The only problem is that he isn't very visual in his teaching style. Weekly quizzes are tough!
The most friendly prof i've had. The material is hard to understand, but he works hard to make it some what interesting. He knows his stuff, and loves to help you when you ask. Lots of studying and hard tests. Can't hold a hard class against the prof. he does a good job.
Worst proff I've ever had. If you like an organized proff who makes sense when he teaches don't take his class.
Scary class, hard information to understand. This class requires a lot of studying and a lot of time. Nikkel is a good, helpful prof but he is hard to follow. His weekly quizzes are way tough but his exams are fair to the material.Make sure to attend EVERY lecture, read the book, and study the note aids in and out and you will be fine.
Extremely hard class, but prof Nikkel did a pretty good job teaching it. He really knows his stuff and will try to help you if you need it. In general, there's way to much memorizing, but all the profs make you do it. His tests are tough, study hard. Make sure you can dedicate alot of time to the class, because you'll need to.
This is a hard class no matter who the prof is. You have to take the time to study. I was one of those who had to take this class twice. When I actually put the effort in, I did well. Nikkel will help you if you help yourself and show him you want to do well.
Very smart prof, but tough class. Make sure you study hard and ask questions. He is really nice, take advantage of that and get on his good side!
If you enjoy studying and constantly thinking about chem, this is the proff for you! He is a nice guy but I had to study like mad for his tests only to do average.
Worst class ever. Took it twice with him and it was even more confusing the second time. Tests are impossible. If you have him, get out asap and get a different prof.
I really enjoyed this class. He moves quick but if follow his objective list and study there's no reason why you would not do well. He does go farther into metabolism than the other professors, but he made it really interesting to learn. He expects a lot out of his students, but what good professor doesn't?
This is a difficult class. Read your book and do your homework or you wont do well. Gives no credit for homework except on owl. Very nice and helpful, but needs to pay attention to teaching instead of just telling.
this guy was super nice but hard as heck. i recommend taking anyone else for biochem. i think he is just so smart at it, it doesn't occur to him that everyone else really doesn't just "get it."
I don't know what anyone is talking about, this guy is about as easy as they come. First three tests are CAKE, followed by two more slightly more difficult, and a final in which you are allowed a notecard. Explains everything, helps in office hours (even with lab) and treats everyone with equal respect. Overall great prof.
As someone else mentioned, Nikkel does a lot of talking, whether he is actually teaching or not. I think it's because he knows Chemistry really well and forgets who his audience is, which is not helpful for beginners. He grades fair, is somewhat disorganized, but a good guy. If you're not adept at Chemistry, don't take him. If you are, good choice.
great guy but hes so smart, he forgets who hes teaching to! study alot, read the book and take notes, lots of them. i recommend getting a tutor, if you think you might have troubles. I took advanced chem my sophomore year in high school and havent taken it since. i recommend taking before you take bio 120.
Great prof. and very approachable! Though lecture may have been boring a few times, it was not for a lack of teaching on his part. He is very knowledgeable and seems enthusiastic about teaching. Notes done by PowerPoint AND he creates a printable version. If you study for his tests they’re not too difficult, but make sure you pay attention!
Hes a really nice guy, but the class is near impossible. His tests are extremely hard, and averages are D's. He gives you 5 bonus points, but you have to find the right answers on the test. Every week there is a quiz in lab and lecture. Also the grade you get is the grade you earn, there is no curve in his class, like most chem classes.
He's a good prof for a hard class. He helps you understand as much as he can, and gets all excited when he lectures. The quizes in discussion every week are a grade helper! I'd recommend him for biochem.
HARD class. forgets who hes teaching to, not very helpful. get a different professor if you have him, seriously.
This prof isnt too bad if you pay attention and go to class. He clarifies everything that he wants you to know in the note aids and tells you what page everything in the book is on. Gives a Learner Objectives at the beginning of the class and sticks to it, just keep up with the material you should do alright. Extra credit on tests, he likes 75% av.
He's ok. If you want to do semi-well you have to memorize his NoteAids word for word. He usually has pretty hard tests with low averages around 68-73%.
I love this old man, I wish he was my grandpa. He was a great lab instructor, clairfys any questions you have. The first lab is really easy, but the point of it for him is really to see where you are and to let you know what he expects. Seriously though, he is a great guy.
i really liked prof nikkel.. he told you exactly what to study; if you know his noteaids and go off his learner objectives you will be fine. go to class everyday and write down what he says in class and you will be fine. tests were not THAT bad and i definitely felt that he related what we were learning to real life. i would def recommend him!
Nice guy, bad teacher. He knows his stuff, but he wants you to know it like he does and since this is an introductory biochem class he shouldn't be teaching it. Gives extra credit on exams and lets you use a note card for the final, but the exams are still unbelievable.
Seems like a nice guy who knows his stuff, but his tests can be difficult.
Nice guy, hard tests. He does an awful job of letting you know whats to be expected. After exams you get to take them home and find all the "right" answers but it usually takes hours to do that with the notes, book and internet.
He is very excited to teach biochem but he is not good..i usually love science classes but now i have to take it again because his tests were reeediculous..class averaged at 58% on one of them...retire harvey!
hes a very nice guy but the class is INCREDIBLY HARD! he teaches the information like you should know it already, the tests are ridiculously hard too, he curves, adds points and gives extra credit but half the class still gets a D or lower.
This professor gets the reputation of being very difficult. However I feel it is only because people don't try. The key is to stay up on the material for the weekly partner quizes. He gives out bonus points on the exams. The best thing to do is to study old exams. His tests are composed of nearly half of questions from previous exams.
This was a very fast-paced course and at times very difficult. You just need to keep up on the material! Professor Nikkel loves teaching biochem and does a pretty decent job. His tests are difficult if you don't study his note aids and stick to the learner objectives, but he gives bonus points. I would definitely recommend him for Biochemistry
Super super nice guy, but does not know how to teach. I struggled immensely while taking his class and I usually enjoy science. I'd reccomend finding a different teacher if you'd like to pass.
this class required A LOT of time...professor is nice but very unclear and class is VERY tough-get a different prof if you can or be ready to spend a lot of time on the material!
Very nice man. Not very good teacher. Always willing to answer questions, but rather vague about what you need to know for exams. His Note Aids are very helpful, but you just need to keep up with the material and go to class or you will be entirely lost.
Nikkel is a good professor and very smart but sometimes moves through the material too quickly without enough explanation. He is a very nice guy and wants you to understand the material. He answers questions during the discussion period which is really helpful. The class is difficult but if you study enough you will do fine.
Professor Nikkel is seriously the sweetest man, he is difficult to understand at times and things are not very clear but go to his office hours he is very helpful. He is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be the class is hard..period.No matter what prof you get. Get a tutor go to his office hours, put in the work it will pay off!
This prof. is horrible. yes, he knows his stuff but he cannto relay it to his students well at all. i worked my butt off in this class and studied every night to try to understand the material but still hardly passed. If you work hard in this class it doesent matter, you rarely get the grade u deserve.
Biochem is a hard class. period. There is no way to get through it with a good grade without working hard. That doesn't make the person who teaches the class a bad person just because he asks alot of you. that said, Nikkel is demanding. But, if you want to really understand biochem take his class and be prepared to work very hard.
yes, biochem is a very demanding course so expect to work hard if you want a decent grade. very intelligent guy, but doesn't quite understand that he's teaching BASIC biochem and not the advanced one. extremely hard tests, loads of memorization, advise not to take at 8am. don't buy the book b/c its more complicated to understand than his lectures.
This is one of my favorite professors ever! He is easily approachable and is SO helpful if you go in and talk to him. He knows what he is talking about and makes the material understandable. He does a good job of letting hi students know exactly what to expect to be on the exams. If you study and used him as a tool he is not as bad as ppl think.
Great prof! exams will be tricky, which can make the mc questions seem hard, but the exams are not impossible. I had to study my butt-off to get a B- in that class, but thats just me. Did not need to use the book for class, study the note-aids mostly that you purchase for the course!
I can't seem to understand how any of you could say he is a good teacher. Yes, he knows the material well, but he does not know how to connect topic in a comprehensible way. He doesn't know how to TEACH. He just talks about what he knows.
Prof Nikkel is a very sweet man. He can be kind of confusing with what is needed and not needed for the tests but his tests are straightforward. That doesn't mean they are easy, because they aren't, but he doesn't try to trick you. I only heard terrible things before the class and I was pleasantly surprised. He is helpful when you need it.
Avoid him at all costs. He means well but makes the class impossible unless you are a biochemist.
he was very nice and the tests were difficult but he gave practice ones that were very similar and replaces your lowest exam grade with the final which was pretty fair. i would take him again he is very sweet!
Didn't help me when I went to his office hours. Taught stuff, gave homework on different stuff, then tested on more different stuff. Average was always a D. He is very excited and knowledgeable, but a horrible teacher.
He uses note aids which are printed out and lectures with a bunch of information that you don't know if you need to know or not. I recorded lectures and everything and they still made no sense. He's a little unorganized, and his lecture style doesn't fit well with people who need to actively write or take notes to learn best.
I would not recommend taking Harvey for biochem.. he goes on long rants about background info and after about 45 mins says but oh you don't need to know that. very hard exams as well. Smart guy but horrible at explaining things to others. Reading the textbook is better than listening to his lectures
Nikkel is a great lab professor to have. The lab experiments were clear cut and easy to get an A on. He isn't very clear when explaining things sometimes, but I liked that he wanted us to actually understand the material.
Avoid him. Tests are super difficult, and there would be material on them we never even covered. He told us to just know the big picture, but would test on the smallest details. He also adds to the note aids without telling the class ahead of time, so you just won't have notes for that lecture, which is annoying. Online homework is tedious.
Very nice guy, but this class was honestly the most difficult thing I have ever done in my entire life. I had a tutor and went to the SSC daily and was afraid I wasn't going to pass all semester. Out of all the Profs he has the reputation of being the toughest according to tutors. He knows material well but does not teach it well to students.
I had Prof Nikkel for chem 109 lab and he was always very willing to help! He always skimmed over the lab and clarified and explained the key ideas we needed to know. He's very enthusiastic about what he teaches and I would recommend taking him for lab!
Nikkel was overall a good professor. Gave out a lot of material to study from and was a nice person. But, that being said, his class and tests were extremely hard. I would recommend seeing him for office hours at the beginning of the semester and signing up for the SLA course accompanied with his class. Long lectures. Great professor, hard class.
Great professor! I was so scared going into the class because of all the terrible things I had heard. Worked extremely hard but got the grade I wanted. He is so nice and extremely helpful and really cares about his students. I loved him!!
Prof Nikkel is very passionate about Biochem which makes the lectures interesting. His tests can be tough but thats to be expected with a difficult subject. He adds bonus points to all of his tests to help out as well. There is rarely any homework, overall great course. I would take it again!
Really great professor, just a hard subject. First test had a bad average as no one knew what to expect, after that class did well. Just study hard for the first one and you will be set for the semester. Tests are multiple choice (25Q) with 1 page written. Final is cumulative, but all multiple choice, all are curved. DONT BUY BOOK!!!
Worst professor. Great subject but he didn't teach it well, so it made the class super difficult. Even with a tutor and going the CSC, I was still struggling. Don't take this class with this professor. His tests are nitpicky and ridiculously hard.
Worst prof. He is a smart guy, however, his tests are near impossible. Class average for the first exam was below 50% with test corrections. I study hard and his exams are extremely difficult.
He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about biochem, but his class was extremely hard. The exams were challenging, and a lot of material was covered over the course of the semester in short amounts of time. He knows what he's talking about but I find his methods of teaching to be ineffective. It was hard to follow him during lecture.
I have mixed feelings after having Nikkel for Biochem. His exams were extremely hard, due to the 5-6 chapters that they covered. You have to FULLY understand all the material to be successful on exams. He is very knowlegable, and fair by replacing lowest with final and curving several exams, but he is very bad at teaching. GET A TUTOR!!!
Test averages were almost always below a 50%. However, professor Nikkel really isnt that bad. If I could go back in time Id recommend recording and listening to every lecture the day of and going back through your notes. GET A TUTOR RIGHT AWAY! Make sure you know broad concepts because those come into play for lengthy questions on exams.
He is really passionate about Biochem so that is nice. He wasn't the greatest professor but I managed to do fine. I would probably try to take someone else but he is still an okay professor if you absolutely have to take his class.
Extremely difficult exams even if you're regularly studying. Always starts lecture a minute early and goes at least two minutes past the time allotted. Once made a mistake on his exam and went back to regrade a week later and took points away from several students, penalizing students for his mistake. Would recommend a different prof.
Professor Nikkel doesnt really know how to teach. Goes on tangents all the time and is just hard to follow in general. Do not take him if you can help it. His teaching style is just not effective and his exams are the hardest Ive taken in college.
Rate my professor says to refrain from using swear words, so Ill just let you put 2 and 2 together. Hes terrible. Probably could use adderall.
This class is super hard because of Professor Nikkel. He is not good at teaching. I did horrible on the first 2 exams. 3rd&4th exams I spent an insane amount of time teaching myself. Read the book/teach yourself and you'll get >60%. His notes aren't helpful. If you take this class with him, get a tutor or be prepared to teach yourself everything.
Nikkel was awful. I worked so hard in his class, studied over 15 hours for each exam and still got 60% or below. His class averages are horrible because he's not good at lecturing. His OWL homework are ridiculous and a waste of time. I've done well in all my other chemistry classes except for his. Take another professor if you can.
I really don't mind Harvey as a professor. This is a hard class and I think it would be just as hard with any other prof. He allows you to do test correction for bonus points which is nice. The only annoying this is the class average was always SOOO low and he would never curve exams
Professor Nikkel is so nice and smart. But when it comes to teaching the information you need to learn for this class at a lower level, he isn't the best at it. He is available for office hours, has an altered grading scale and allows for bonus points after exams, which helps. But you need to put in a lot of work in order to pass this class.
Worst Professor at GVSU! I did well in all my prior science classes and spent a lot of time studying in this class and still failed every exam. Lectures and notes are not helpful. Take this class with another professor, or be prepared to teach everything yourslef.
I'm not sure why Nikkel is getting so many bad ratings here. He's super kind and it's clear he knows his stuff very well. Yes, the exams are tough, but that is to be expected. He provides so many resources to help study: learning objectives, practice exams, worksheets, etc. He even allows test corrections. I would recommend him for sure.
