I really enjoyed taking his class, he is very clear about what he expects and what the tests are about. Tests and exams are cumulative, but helps you very much in remembering everything. When final exam comes, u are prepared bc u've gone over everything.
he is a great, and an easy teacher.
Overall, very nice...class is not to hard but not easy either. Do not arrive late!

Really nice guy. Tests are cumulative, with about 100 pieces of art that you should know, but he goes over most of the information in lecture. You can tell that he wants you to learn though, so if you take the class, just try to take/study his notes.
He was overall a nice guy....but a bad teacher...DO NOT SHOW UP LATE!!!
Good teacher and a very nice guy. you just have to study and take notes and thats it. if you that then you won't have a problem in the class. he is very clear on what he expects.
hard guy at first but then after awhile i really liked him. he will work with you if u have any problems he is easy to reach his subject is not too hard and he gives points to the needy. i really like him he lets class out 15 min early every class and lets students leave right after the tests.
HE IS A NICE TEACHER!!
AL-tawil is very nice he can teach you everything you need to know. He doesnt bore you to death like other teachers. He keeps everything simple as long as you get the point hes straight with you. I highly recomend you take him....very nice guy my friend and I missed the final and we took it over!
He is a helpful and a nyc teacher.
Wonderful Teacher, very smart man with great talent!
Easy teacher You take this class if you know how to cheat on tests, because not only does he not teach well and expect you to learn on your own, but the material itself, as you al know is hard. The only way to get an A, like me, is to attend his Extra Credit lectures and to cheat on his tests, which I found easy/fun, and better than memorizing****
awsome teacher, respected and talented, you just have to take notes in class and you'll be alright
wow! I love his class it was all so interesting. He knows his topic very well. I wish all of my instructors had his teaching skills.

I was supposed to have a different teacher and at the beginning of the semester there was a last minute schedule change. He counts attendance, calls on people to answer stupid questions in class, and all he does is tell you exactly what it says in the book. There really isn't any reason to come to class. Avoid his class if you can.
i seriously thought this class will blow..but no..i seriously enjoyed his class..he knows his what he is talking about..might be stricked on things like attendence..but other than that..he is a very good teacher..
amazining professorrrr ... extraw credit helpz alot .. even though he makes u study alot but hez tests are so easyyyyyy and hez really really helpfull..easy A
He is a great teacher but the course demands alot of studying I got an A but i had to study very hard for it. My advice is not to take the class in the first place not because of the teacher but because the course. Do the extra credit they help alot. Study what he gives in class,is on the syllabus and attend so will understand the material better.
it was a mistake to take art for real!! about the teacher he is very nice and intellegent man but he is so hard!! i just hate art but if ur interested in art and u wanna do alot of hard studies take him!!
professor is a great guy, knows what he's teaching and is a very educated person. study hard, and DONT fall asleep. overall was a good class.
good teacher, exams are really easy and gives extra credit.
such a nice teacher, if you want to get more knowledge and do great in the future take his class. He is helpful, and gives extra credit. Dont hesitate taking his class. God bless you Mr. Altawil. wowowowow
okay first of all....this professor is seriously AMAZING. he is a fullbright scholar, a HUGE asset to HFCC!! i couldnt believe it when i found out, my respect for him skyrocketed. he is also an EXTREMELY educated man..he knows EVERYTHING, you can ask him any question and he will give you a detailed answer. i seriously loved this professor, TAKE IT!
Awesome professor. I highly recommend Al-Tawil for Art History. The guy knows what he's talking about and is very nice. He is funny and will really teach the material. You must study and pay attention to class lectures. He makes the material very interesting and has a lot of experience. Take Art History with Al-Tawil.
Awesome professor
He is a good professor and knows everything about the material and more. However sometimes it was hard to stay awake in class (I never did, but came close!), especially when we watched video clips. The test aren't too bad, he does have you write a research paper and make a presentation though. I would recommend him I guess.
He is the best, you learn a lot and very helpful. He really changed my views on lots of things, but you can't count on this class as a breeze.Study you will get an A. I don't usually get A's but in this class i got an A.
He is a really great professor. Must take good notes and study for the exams. Be nice and respectful to him and he'll like you. I was intimidated at first by all the material but loved it at the end!
He is extremely intelligent and loves what he teaches. Keep in mind that there is heavy load of material and memorization is key. Attendance is mandatory but he makes the subject interesting through his dialogue and pictures. I would definitely recommend this teacher. Just be prepared to do a lot of reading to be able to pass his tests!
really really really hard, have to do a lot of reading, makes you studied 50 pages and only uses 10
Makes class very interesting, nice guy, knows how to really teach. RECOMMENDED!
Obviously, you're going to have to study when you take Art History. It's mostly memorization, but if you attend class, you'll remember lots just from that. He gives you as much help as he can, but you gotta try. The extra credit really helped me out in this class and the tests turned out alright, because he's not a tough grader at all! Nice guy!
This guy is very selective on his tests. He is a cool dude from Iraq but you gotta love his dialogue. Too much work he offers but it may be part of the art division requirements. The whole class goes by quick and 100 percentage points instead of just points. Very fast paced class. Reading ahead and covering more is always recommended.
Very nice teacher and very passionate about art history. This class was not easy for me because I struggle with memorization, and that is what you need for the tests. He is fair and gives you many other ways to improve your grade if you are willing to apply yourself. He has little tolerance for lazy students and will let them hang themselves.
Excellent professor, and a very nice man!Highly recommend. You must read your chapters to do well,it seems like a lot to cover, but Dr. Al-Tawil makes it interesting.Be in class on time, and participate in class & you'll be fine. You have to study a lot,but his tests are a snap! I got more out of this class than first anticipated.Do it!
always attend. stay on track. and u should be fine.
Awesome teacher! You have to study about 4 hours a week and all the tests are cumulative which is a good thing because it prepares you for the final. Class is out of 100 pts. but he gives extra credit. Take this class, I promise you won't regret it. Dr. Al-Tawil is the definition of awesomeness! It is easier to study from the book with the slides!
Mr Al-Tawil is a cool teacher,Even though on the first day I felt intimidated but isnt really like I thought he would be.Just study the page numbers he gives in the syllabus and do extra credit and u will be fine. it is alot of note taking but all u basically need to study are the pictures he assigns his tests are short I got an A and i did learn.
he's the best....
The worst teacher. He does not no how 2 grade at alll. He gives u over 100 pics to study for an 8 point test. You have to attend everyday and dont be late or he'll kick u out. u have to read every chapter urself to get an A. He know's alot about the subject but i would NOT recommend him at all
i honestly don't know how he got all these good ratings. His grading scale is horrible. His tests cover too many chapters for such little points and questions. He does not give study guides. He does explain and lecture well so attending class is a must. I wouldnt recommend this professor. and this is coming from a B+/A- student.
Do we attend college to learn and be challenged, yes. Some students want it their way, this is not Burger King. Come to class, read,do the homework, take the tests, simple! Why pay for a class if you don't plan to attend? Dr. Al-Tawil is great to students who participate & WANT to learn,I struggle with my studies as well, but I do it,it's my education!
Very serious professor, cant be late for class not allowed in you have to have a legitimate reason. Missing one class feels like you missed alot because he covers alot in one class. Can be boring...but he knows his stuff pretty good.Unless you have a very good memory you shouldnt take it..alot of pictures to remeber ..finals studied over 250 image
If you pay even a little attention and show up for every class you'll be fine. He may speak broken English to a degree but his voice and knowledge of the subject makes absorbing the information quite easy. The tests are very easy and limited to 12 questions. Warning: He blows through the last 5 chapters VERY quickly, so you're on your own.
Good teacher, follows syllabus to a T, don't be late, pay attention in class, and be respectful to him and he'll leave you alone, and respect you as well.
I was struggling with his test, they're a little tricky. This guy knows his art history and you will come out of this class with knew knowledge every day. Gives extra credit opportunities. Very helpful. He was strict but it kept his class structured!
This professor will open up your mind to the wonders of art history. He not only has thorough knowledge of the various periods of art history, but he also has visited some of the sites, churches and museums that are discussed in class. Great professor overall!
took art history with him not knowing much about art but being a huge history buff and some of the stuff he told us i was like wth did he get that info? all the historical stuff he told us that i was familiar with was wrong, spent the rest of the time wondering if the stuff i didnt know about was wrong just read the book and youll ace the tests
great art teacher. he knows his subject and respects individuals whom may have different interpretation of the art. only had 4 assignment including a research paper. listening to lectures allows you not to have to read the book. Plenty of extra credit!!! very kool teacher. ill take him again!
DO NOT BE LATE or he will be mad. Great teacher, tells you what he expects and tests/quizes are reasonable.
Amazing teacher, loved the experience in his classroom, his class flows by nicely, study all the images he gives you a day before the test and youll be fine.
though not easy; that withstanding an intense study is required to excel and have a good grade,i could say that the greatness, and proficiency of the professor makes it an amazing course and experience.
He is Great Prof i hope to talk with him
worst teacher , if u like to breeze threw your classes i wouldn't recommend this guy , was so boring ,grading scale is garbage and his test are to hard for just 8 points . if u wanna fail go ahead and take this class
With no prior art history interest, I left this class with the utmost respect for the prof. Dr. Al-Tawil seriously knows his stuff. He was a great help when I was worried about my grade. Show up, do the readings, take notes, you're golden. Look up the prof online, he's a serious scholar and an asset to HFCC. Highly recommended.
He can be very strict but as long as you follow along and take GOOD DETAILED notes you should be just fine. He is a very understanding professor.
he is a really nicee professor. knows his material and makes the subject interesting. his grades are fair. study and we will receive an A. TAKE HIM..
I didn't know ANYTHING about art history before this class!! Professor is VERY SMART and knows so much about this topic! I ended up loving this class. Prof. Al-Tawil was really helpful and understanding too. He's a little intimidating but if you make an effort he really cares. great class!! BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE NOTES!!!(and DO NOT be late!)
One of the best classes I took at Henry Ford. SO easy , but also very interesting. I learned a lot , and this class changed the way I look at buildings. Just go to class ,pay attention , write your essays , and you should be fine. Tests are SO SO easy. If you pay attention in class, then you don't really need to study. Gives study guides. Awesome
This class was very easy if you attended class and paid attention. He uses the book ALL the time. His study guides aren't that great because there is 100+ pieces on the guide and he only uses 10 of them on each test. But take note, whatever he takes the most time on in class is usually the 10 items on the test. :)
Although, I received an A in the course, this class required A LOT OF STUDYING. Don't come into this class, with this professor, for an easy A. A major set backs in this class from this professor is the study guide tell you to study 200+ images for one test but, on the test includes maximum 20 images. but if you're a "good" student, you'll do fine
This is honestly one of the most boring classes I have ever taken in my life. I'm a be honest 7 students dropped from the class halfway through the semester. His a very confusing teacher and doesn't help you unless he like you he requires that you study 300+ picture yet only uses 20 on the test. I am never ever taking him again and advise u as well
I don't know what I was thinking. worst class ever. should have dropped on the first day
He really loves the subject and the class is enjoyable, but he can be tough. Attendance is mandatory and he'll be very specific on essays. I would get 10.75's and the class is out of 100 points so every point matters. Be prepared to study. You have to study around 50 pics for each test which can be stressful. He is an overall good teacher, though.
def not a blow off class but never in a million years did i think that i would learn more in this class than my business courses I LEARNED ALOT and was actually very interesting. i got an A- in the end exams are easy, just study the night before. NEVER EVER USE YOUR PHONE, HE WILL FLIP OUT. he never taught the full 2 hours, always let us out early
He was really a great teacher. No homework, test were sooooo easy. He literally gives you a study guide that is basically the test. There is a mandatory trip to the DIA, but you can go whenever you want or just act like you did (like me). I would definitely take him again.
Dr. AL-Tawil is very passionate about his work. His exams are a little tough, but if you study the study guide you'll be fine. There are about two papers. Barely any homework. He's a very easy grader. I personally loved him, i felt like I connected with him and was able to get through to him when I needed the most help. Definitely would take again
Prof. Al-Tawil is extremely knowledgeable and he always presented very interesting lectures. His assignments were useful and reasonable. His tests were very difficult. He expects students to be on time, pay attention in class, and participate. He showed some interesting films and many interesting pictures of art work. He helps you learn.
i thought i would learn nothing in this class but i learned alot! and its interesting. coming from someone who is just trying to graduate with a decent GPA, this class is easy. don't wait till night before to study. study 10 pictures a day and you'll be good. thats what i did and i got an A in the class. NEVER EVER USE YOUR PHONE OR BE LATE...
He's a great proffessor and extremely knowledgeable. Truly cares about the students success. If you take the class seriously you will earn a good grade
He had you memorize over 100 pictures and only 20 of them were on the test. He does provide a study guide, but you still had to study each picture. He would put you on the spot if you were using your phone and would call you out for walking into class a couple of minutes late. Other then that, he's an easy A if you put effort into studying.
This professor is AMAZING! Forget what any one else has said, if you love art, or know nothing of art and want to learn, he is the one to go to! He is extremely knowledgeable and supportive and wants his students to go far in life. He really cares about his students and will help in any way. TAKE ART 227, SO AMAZING AND YOU LEARN SO MUCH! WORTH IT
TOOK NEW COURSE ART 227-History of Arab Art & Architecture AMAZING CLASS MUST TAKE! THIS PROFESSOR IS WONDERFUL AND I WOULD TAKE HIM FOR MORE CLASSES IN THE FUTURE! JUST SHOW UP, PARTICIPATE AND A FEW SMALL PAPERS. TAKE HIM!!
I took this class because I needed the credits, but it turned up to be one of the most interesting classes. Dr. Tawil made it seem more like a seminar so we can feel more involved. Yes we had to do work, but isn't this expected in college? I learned a lot of new information about my ancestors. This class was so worth it!!
This professor is AMAZING! i loved his lecture, if you love art, or know nothing of art and want to learn, he is the one to go to! He is extremely knowledgeable and supportive and wants his students to go far in life. He really cares about his students and will help in any way. TAKE ART 121, SO AMAZING AND YOU LEARN SO MUCH! WORTH IT
He is really knowledgeable on the subject of art. He's really nice and he cares. His exams are extremely difficult, I dont understand how he wants someone to memorize around 50-60 pics and only put about 9 on the exam. I dont even do that in a 5 credit class, let alone I have to do this in art history? Thats my only issue with him.
Professor Tawil is a very respectful and knowledgeable instructor. He is extremely fair when it comes to grading tests and writing assignments. The only difficult aspect of the class was that you needed to study around 80 images for each test where there is around 10 images on the test. Make sure you pay attention in class and take notes that helps
Prof Al-Tawil is extremely knowledgeable and expects you to take this class very seriously. You only get a few assignments, so the tests and final are important to do well on. It does take a lot of memorizing the facts and images, but is a very interesting class. You NEED the text. Online code is not necessary.
Dr. Al-Tawil is a true gem at HFC. I took both ART224 and ART227 with him. He is passionate about his students' success as long as you show you care about his class. His lectures are always thought-provoking and makes you look at history from various perspectives. He knows what he's talking about and his teaching style shows it.
I honestly can't believe I didn't know who professor Al-tawil was before this. He changed the way I think about history and the world. His brain is like an encyclopedia. I was struggling at first on the tests and he was understanding and helpful. The ideal professor. Write down everything and make flashcards for tests.
Dr. Al-Tawil is a very good professor. The lectures can be a bit boring but he tries to tell some jokes and be interactive with the students. He seems to be very passionate about the subject and in turn tries to teach it really well. He also cares about his students and is pretty lenient with assignments if you communicate with him.
Very disrespectful, unstable teaching methods, definitely would not recommend
worst class ive ever taken, could barely understand his lectures and his grading scale is very bad.
Dr Tawil is one of my favorite professors. He is a very respected teacher and he knows what he is talking about. There is only a few assignments so do good on the tests and the final. He gives a few extra credit points but if u pay attention and study the textbook you should be fine. He's also really understanding and nice i would definitely recomm
Dr. Hashim Al-Tawil is the best professor at HFCC I've ever met. It's too bad the other reviewers got a bad impression and they've way overstated their criticisms.!!!! He's outstanding Professor, clear, and concise. show up on time, do the assignments, take notes, and prepare for tests; at the end of class you will get A and learned a lot.
If you know nothing about Art (pre-Islamic, religious, secular, medieval ect..) you will learn a ton and will absolutely love this class & professor! He is by far my favorite at HFC, fair grader, helps students a lot, take notes and its really an easy A! Must show up to class too, tests are easy, he gives a study guide and review before the test.
The absolute best prof of my college career. He is so knowledgeable and experienced, it is impossible not to admire and respect. A lot of people expect it to be a blow off class, so they blame him when they realize AH classes are difficult. He offered EC on every exam, but you need to study a lot for them. Would recommend to anyone interested in AH
What a wonderful prof!!! Lectures were awesome! Don't miss class; exams are 100% on material presented (from the book) in class. Very caring, genuine, and knowledgeable. Fair grader.
Well I got +A because I'm a +A student and I studied for his class as much as I studied for my A&P classes! He wants you to study 80 pictures and only ten of them are on the test. If you be absent you have to give him a report from doctor, police, court, etc! I never got under 10 in his tests (they are over 10) but I really studied for them.
Amazing professor, would take again, tests are mostly about memorizing the pictures not really about textbook information, lectures help for some assignments. Does not have many assignments and tests.
Class is easy, he keeps things very simple, but when it comes to helping a student out he refuses to, he sticks with the guidelines of the college and locks on their procedures, if you have a difficult time balancing school and work, he will not be supportive.
professor Hashim is such a great professor. he is respectful towards his students. In his class, attendance is important. even though his lectures are boring but he explains and provides the full information about a subject. His tests are easy. He also gives other chances for makeup and finishing assignments.
He is a really nice teacher and is quite helpful. Not much homework and the quizzes are really easy.
Amazing professor! would recommend. Not alot of hw. Easy tests and exam.
Lectures have all the information so attend them. Easy quizzes (4 per semester) and the final exam is not that hard either. Just practice the study guides he provides and you'll be fine. This professor really knows his stuff and is a nice person. Always attend class.
Easy class to take, short essays, and quizzes. Attend his lectures or else you won't pass. The book required can be found online if you look, you don't have to spend any money.
