Excellent Instructor! Extremely sincere and helpful.
Hatem is hella cool - he's funny and really relates to the youth. Respectable personality outside of UCB.
very good professor
Excellent teacher. Relevant, funny, adjusts to the pace of the class. Highly recommended.
beautiful class, highly recommended.
Hatem is FRIGGIN AWESOME. He knows his stuff, he's lively and passionate. He will ALWAYS take hisi time to explain stuff to you until you understand. He really is about spreading knowledge, a committed and excellent teacher.
good teacher
Hatem is an awesome guy . . . but sometimes he can be a little hard to track down. Also, I thought he wasn't demanding enough for our Arabic class. He's probably the easiest of the Arabic teachers, so if that's what you're looking for he's good. However, I would have like more of a challenge. He's an awesome guy though!

Really cool guy!!! He rocks!! Take his class you won't regret it! He's fun, down to earth understanding. I hope he never retires. I don't think they could find someone to replace him!
Be on top of your stuff from the first day of class. You need to study lots on your own time on the grammar because he doesn't explain it in depth during class. Great personality, personable. Recommended professor.
changes the final exam date via e-mail, not cool
AWESOME PROF. The most interesting professors ive had. class is an easy A as well
Ridiculously cool guy, very down to earth. He is incredibly knowledgable in everything that he teaches. Totally willing to answer any questions you have during office hours. It was an honor being one of his students.
arabic is a going to be a hard class regardless, but if you're taking it, hatem is the teacher you want to have.
Ok guy. Likeable personality. He's kind of funny too.
An amazingly awesome guy, great personality, funny, engaging outside of the class but wish he were more so in class, makes arabic fun to learn, but i wish he would be more strict, i feel like people don't take him seriously and i know he knows his stuff, but he's too laid back to get the respect i think he deserves from his students.
He is so funny and fun I just loved being in his class. I took his Islam in America class also, what an eye opener. Great teacher, love his style. Very fair grader. Lisa
Hatem is such an amazing professor, he's so knowledgeable and engaging. You can never get bored in his class!!! definitely recommend this class!!
Amazing Professor, completely changes your perspective on how you percieve and judge things. He is extremely knowledgable on middle eastern politics and religion and his lectures are really interesting. One of the best professors at Cal!
he is the ONLY teacher in that department that is nice and worth taking a class with. pro. bazian rocks!
Heard he was one of "101 most dangerous professors". Not true. I'm quite right wing and I thought he was the most academically honest and reliable of any professor I've had. A three hour lecture could have been unbearable, but he is enormously witty. Unlike another professor I had, he truly knew the subject and answer every question. Favorite.
I have taken NES 190 and ASAM 128 with Prof Bazian. By far the two best classes I have taken at Cal. He is brilliant and a fantastic lecturer.
Hatem is awesome. His sense of humor makes coming to class every day easy and enjoyable (think Borat cadence with Palestinian political humor). He's a very fair grader, and has high expectations for his students. If you're up for the challenge of learning a difficult language, his class is very rewarding.
totally love his lessons. hes teaching nes146a this summer in ucb. as an exchange student, his lessons makes my journey to ucb totally worth it!
I took this class during summer, and Professor Bazian is a very clear and engaging professor. He always takes time to answer all of your questions, and makes sure you understand before continuing with new material. Highly recommended, I learned so much about Islam.
Knowledgeable, witty, charismatic, and all-around amazing professor. Absolutely worth it.
Words can not begin to describe what an amazing professor this man is.
dr. bazian is a VERY good professor. he is witty, very knowledgeable, and also makes students think outside of the box. he is very helpful in office hours as well. i absolutely love this professor.
A'ight.....that is his trademark word at the end of almost every sentence. he did a good job and kept it relevant for first time Islamers, converts and born Muslims.
he asks questions on exams that he does not cover!!!It seems he recycles lectures and tests, but does not realize that in some classes we do not cover exactly what is in there. It's frustrating.
He was extremely intelligent and definitely taught with a purpose. Brought in lots of interesting viewpoints and examples. He reuses tests which can be a good and bad thing.
Professor Bazian is an interesting lecturer and a generous grader. However, he is prone to making wildly unsubstantiated claims about the United States and in spite of frequently criticizing the generalizations made about Muslims he makes absurd generalizations about Americans. In spite of this his lectures are usually fun to see.
Dr.Bazian's student ratio grows each year. That said,he has 2 or more GSIs as do most profs, doing his grading from all different backgrounds, that actually grade student work and also discuss why they graded it thusly during office hours with students. GSIs b-space the grades as well. That itself is clear checks and balances in the grading.
Probably one of the most awesome professors at Cal! You learn loads in his classes, plus he isnt so bad looking either ;)
Dr. Bazian is exactly the kind of professor I had hoped to find at UC Berkeley. His lectures expanded my worldview unlike any other and influenced where I want to work after graduation. His lectures are articulate, brilliant, funny, and organized. Deeply respect him & highly recommend his courses for the American cultural requirement.
This was my least favorite class at Cal, and it was all because of this prof. His lectures are an unorganized mess, and he constantly goes off topic. All he teaches is his own opinion. The test questions are vague so the matching part of the midterm was impossible. The final group project was time-consuming and pointless. Do not take this class!!
The lectures are very disorganized. There are a ton of readings that are never discussed but are on the exams. There are many ways to get points for this class so getting the grade isn't that hard but I didn't learn a thing in this class. Would not recommend.
Amazing Professor! Extremely knowledgeable on many areas, even those outside of his field. Keeps lectures engaging and relevant to current events.
Absolutely GREAT lecturer. Very engaging classes. Knows what he's talking about. Exams are pretty straightforward and easy. It's a pity that more people don't take his classes seriously. Most people don't realize the deep ocean Dr. Bazian is. Ultimately their loss - don't be of them.
Very knowledgeable professor, but lectures are incredibly disorganized and usually do not correspond to the (many) readings assigned. He clearly cares about his students, but he gives almost no guidance on assignments and does not respond to email.
Great lectures. Amazing. If you are interested in the Middle East and the Arab World, he is the guy. Very knowledgeable. 3 Reflection papers, 1 final research paper, 1 midterm and the final of course: he tests alot. He gives you a couple of extra credits at the end. The GSI who graded my papers was tough (you can't contact them). You have to study.
Although Professor Bazian is very passionate about his field, his lectures are very disorganized. He barely covered any of the readings assigned to us this semester. The lecture mostly starts with some random video relevant to the current event and then he gives a powerpoint presentation. The class is extremely easy on the bright side so its cool.
Bazian is a very passionate man about what he believes, but sometimes, it seems like he's foisting it on you. When he's argued with, or told he's wrong, he goes into tirades. His worldview is also rather narrow, its always "colonialism" this, "imperialism" that.
His lectures are all over the place, he is unorganized and scattered. Did not learn much at all which was very disappointing since his class was important for my major.
Really spiteful teacher and an extremely disorganized course on top of that. Too busy thinking about his own things to focus energy on the course and when he does he doesn't want to hear you opinions.
Inspirational teacher. Cares about students and knows a lot.
Hatem is an amazing professor with TONS of opinions that can certainly rub people the wrong way. But even as someone right-minded, I found his class engaging and his energy admirable. He cares, which is more than can be said about many Berkeley profs
Professor Bazian is the best. Easily one of my favorite professors on campus. This class was really interesting and I will for sure take more classes with him. He is cheesy and funny, knowledgeable, and a great guy. Pretty easy class if you have a helpful GSI
Hatem Bazin is a great professor and a role model for young Muslims today. I took his class in Fall 2018 and I'm glad I did. Make sure to do the readings for the midterm and you'll be fine. Final is easier than the midterm and not so much reading is required. Hilarious teacher and goes off on tangents at times, but he's super entertaining.
Took this class because of good ratings, but don't be fooled! Look closely, the awesome reviews have lots of thumbs downs and bad reviews have lots of thumbs up Worst class ive ever taken in my academic career. Professor pastes quotes onto his ppt and reads off of his slides. The attd mandatory lectures are so boring only 1/4 of the class show up
. Did not learn much at all which was very disappointing since his class was important for my major.
I love learning about islamophobia but this is one of the worst and most disorganized classes Ive taken at Berkeley. Hes clearly knowledgeable but has no idea how to lecture leading to it being boring
My favorite faculty/professor at berkeley hands down. He is not like the rest, he genuinely cares about all his students and his class is the highlight of my day everyday. Happily answers questions and is there for students. Loves his job and loves life. He is somebody I want to be around. I cannot say that for any of my other professors.
worst class I took at cal. Not because of the content, organization was the WORST. can't take notes on your laptop. tons of reading, never discussed. half the readings not posted to bcourses. GSIS cancel section constantly. Review sessions intentionally vague, GSI Leah refused to answer my question. Refused to answer questions during final exam.
Prof. Bazian is easygoing and his lectures are primarily based on what he says, which may or may not be in the slides. For tests, simply review the reading material and study guide and expect to do well. Professor loves to tell jokes too. Overall good experience.
Have never had such a disorganized class that lied to me so often. You'll only know anything about your grade a day before your final. Final posted half a day late with no explanation. Never responds to emails. Half the syllabus is a straight up lie. Sprung papers on us with no warning, barely any instructions. chill prof/class tho. easy a
Lecture was a bit dry and sometimes hard to pay attention. Lecture attendance wasn't required but discussion is. Graded is based on 3 essays, discussion participation, a midterm, oral history project, and a final. The oral history project is interviewing a Muslim in the Bay Area. Overall easy grading. Exam content is super similar to study guides.
I personally loved Professor Bazian and found his points of view to be really intriguing and unique. Be prepared to take notes based off of his actual speaking, not from slides. He's so laid back about grading and assignments because as long as you try, you really will get a good grade. Such a sweet professor!
Intense class with hard to hear info about Islamophobia from the ridiculous to the terrible. But Hatem is my favorite Berkeley Professor He's clear, available, witty, sincere & yet simultaneously always carrying this constant knowledge of the horrible reality of human rights violations in Palestine & Islamophobia in the US. He's an amazing balance.
Professor Bazian was a great professor, and a great person to teach the past and present of the Middle East. His lectures are interesting .One thing I would change is the way the grading is. It was super confusing, and the professor would always seem to change his mind. Both the midterm and final were take home, but they were very excessive.
If youre a Muslim, this class should be easy A. Honestly, if you just listen during lectures and do study guides you should be fine. Plus hes a really funny and chill guy.
Chill class, chill professor. Super passionate about what he teaches, he's a must-take while you're at Berkeley!! Only thing is he is impossible to reach, the guy is super busy all the time.
Easiest class at Berkeley. You just have to sit through boring 3 hour-long lectures.
took this in fall 21, never did any readings just took extremely thorough lecture notes, entire grade based on midterm paper, 2nd paper, and final exam paper. just regurgitated his lectures into the essays, along w additional research as needed). ottoman lectures got hella boring but the material is heavy on history but he made it pretty intriguing
Professor Bazian's Muslims in America class vas super easy. Attendance is mandatory and discussion is also mandatory but they are all chill. Very few and easy assignments. There is a midterm and also final but GSIs give study guides for them and basically you memorize and enter the exam. Definitely recommended!
He's very humorous and has personal interest in the subject matter. There wasn't homework but attendance was mandatory, and there were a decent amount of readings - which is fine if you're interested but it may take a bit of time if you're trying to take the class to fulfil breadth requirements. I found the class interesting and engaging throughout
Hatem is by far the most disorganized professor I have ever had at Berkeley. He is also not accessible outside of class and does NOT respond to any emails--he is chronically on Twitter instead. But, the class was pretty easy and consisted of a midterm, final, presentation, and paper. His lectures were interesting and full of jokes.
One of my favorite professors I've had at Cal. Lectures were 3 hours 1x/week, but Bazian's lecturing is engaging and funny. Only assignments (besides exams) were 2 papers that were relatively short (2-4 pages). Study guides are provided for exams. Bazian is active in the academic community so usually inaccessible outside of class.
Had the privilege of being in Professor Bazian's class, & it was truly a delightful experience. His teaching style is not only informative but also warm and engaging. Professor Bazian's class stands out as a beacon of knowledge, empathy, and respect. If you can take his course, highly recommend it for an enriching and enlightening academic journey.
I highly recommend Professor Bazian to anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Muslims in America. His class is not just informative but also a heartwarming journey into the diverse and rich tapestry of American Muslim experiences.
Hes so chill. lecture is 3 hours but theres plenty of jokes to keep you somewhat entertained. hes a nice guy but very disorganized and will not respond to emails. if the syllabus doesnt match what you're doing dont worry, just listen to what he tells you to do verbally. no two semesters are same lol. but its an easy A! hes friendly you'll be fine
Easiest A. 100% recommended for the American culture requirement.
Dr. Hatem is a must take professor at Cal! He genuinely loves what he teaches and it shows. He is super duper busy with other things but if you can catch him after class, he is always nice and attentive!
I regret taking this class. So much homework that I would have to stay up until 3 am to complete it on many nights, and then he quizzes you on topics you did not even study in class. Turns out they were from the textbook, but he never even told us to read it. Also, that darn book cost me $250 and I'm a broke college student... DO NOT TAKE!
Very disorganized professor. Unsure if this is due to GSIs or him but the class structure was a complete mess. Study guides were released only two-three days before exams and there was no communication about the conference required for our grade until the last minute when students were notified that a paper would be due during finals week.
this class was amazing, professor was so nice and hilarious, please dont listen to the negative reviews you will not regret taking any class he teaches
Amazing prof. Changed major bc of him. Learned a lot. Highly respected in field. Accessible
He challenges how you think making you grow as a person. I learned so much but knew nothing at beginning. I will take more of his classes
Professor Bazian is amazing!!!! It was hard to sit through a 3 hr class but it was only once a week. Only like 3 assignments in the whole course and they were easy. He is very smart and passionate and I enjoyed listening to his lectures when I was not distracted.
Easiest class I have taken at Berkeley. GSIs can be a hit or miss, but if you put in at least even the minimum effort you should have no trouble passing the class. Midterm and final exam are based on study (collaborative). Take him for a gpa boost
GPA booster course. Attendance is mandatory but there are ways around it... Professor is an engaging speaker but not for three hours straight. Exams are based on collaborative study guides. GSIs are a hit or miss but responsible for most of your grade/participation. Put in even a minimum amount of effort and you'll no doubt pass the class.
Prof is very knowledgeable but long-winded and does not do a good job of uniting all the discussion sections together to have one curriculum. If you end up with a sucky GSI, you are screwed in terms of how much work and reading you will end up doing. You will also have to do group presentations at least once and collaborate for study guides too.
He's a great lecturer and very inspiring! I enjoyed listening to the interesting information that's often not discussed in other courses and hearing about the professor's own experiences.
Very knowledgable. Grade Booster course. The final exam ended up being six essays to take home in addition to a research paper, which threw me off completely during finals week. He's really funny, but can be pretty disorganized at times. GSI wasn't organized as well. Just take it if you need to boost your GPA.
Great class to take if you're interested in the subject or want an easy GPA boost. The professor is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and it shows in his lectures. Grades were determined by an easy midterm, a discussion presentation, and an easy final.
Don't bother
Very laid back professor who is super friendly and the class is chill. Easy A and the lectures are very relevant and interesting (albeit kind of depressing, which he offsets with a bit of humor).
I don't tend to write reviews on professors, but Professor Bazian was amazing! He is a kind and passionate individual, which shows throughout his lectures. I really appreciated his way of combining humor with topics that can be quite unfortunate. I left feeling like I learned a lot. He also gave us extra credit opportunities, which is great!
Such a cute and sweet professor, but rants like he is drunk, so it can be hard to follow along
Very sweet professor. Honestly he doesnt really care about the grading, he isnt harsh. He tends to go on rants and can be pretty vulgar/straightforward on American Politics and Middle Eastern conflicts. Great professor, content of the class is super interesting. Not great at replying to emails but honestly content is clear enough. Would recommend.
the content is very interesting and the class is very easy. no homework, very easy midterm, final is take home, and there is a very confusing paper assignment but it doesnt seem that bad. overall, enjoyed this class and its a pretty easy A. learned quite a bit too
The lectures were a bit dry at times, but he makes funny jokes and keeps it lively. The class is overall really easy for a four unit course, but theres a very confusing final paper assignment at the end of the semester with like zero info on what to do. Overall though, super light and dr. bazians THE GOAT
If you go to class, you will pass. If you skip class and just do the readings, you'll struggle. Long lectures, as long as you pay attention the whole time you'll be fine.
