Dr. Lan is a Chinese English professor. It is hard to understand what she is saying, but most people get good grades on their papers.
She's a little hard to understand, but very friendly and knowledgeable. Her grading scale is very easy also!
Dr. Lan is a great teacher if you take the time to get to know her. She can be hard to understand, but she really cares about her students and is very flexible with scheduling of assignments and taking extra time to help students who need it.
If she likes you then you'll get good grades. She also strongly favors girls, which makes the class harder than it should be if you're a guy. Very hard to understand her english and writing. I could have acheived an A/B without attending any classes.
Hard to understand, very unclear as to what was expected. She grades easy, but wouldn't recommend her if you actually want to learn something.
Dr. Lan is an alright eng teacher. she takes attendance otherwise you would not have to go to class and get the same grade. I got a 219 out of 250 on every paper. final is just hand in your fourth paper. I bs'd it and still will get a 219 maybe a 218.
Even though I didn't know what the course title meant in the beginning...it is a class that really makes me think, and I really like Lan because she is interested in what she's teaching.
Nice teacher, tries to help. She is difficult to understand, and sometimes you're not really sure what she wants... but she is very nice. Grading is neither tough nor really easy.
Easy grader, and she makes herself available during her office hours if you need her. Once you get over the problem of trying to understand her, she is a good teacher.
Dr. Lan made me cry twice and wasnt helpful at all. she made me feel bad for papers that i worked really hard on and when i didnt understand what she was saying in class and i asked her to clairify, she would talk to me like i was an idiot and she STILL didnt talk clearly.
She doesn't speek english that well so she's hard to understand. Also, it is hard to understand what she expects on her papers. She's weird about that. But if you talk with her she'll try to clarify for you and appreciates that you are at least trying.
English is not her first language. If anything she compensates by over enunciating most every word. I understand her better than I do some other professors who only know english and mumble alot. Includes Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, take this class if your a Philosophy major filling ENG on snap.
Dr. Lan is, like everyone else mentioned, difficult to understand, but a good person and prof nonetheless. She doesn't give A's away though. Every A paper I handed in was an A by only a few points. She's very sociable, so as long as you do your work, go to class, and talk to her, you will do fine.
It's a fairly easy class. Only 4 papers with no final. She's a little hard to understand and makes it a little unclear about what she wants on your paper. Do all the work and you should get atleast a B.
She's not a hard grader...I got an A on every paper. I didn't think it was unclear as to what she wanted on the final drafts--she goes over it like 20 times, and if you still have questions, she'll clarify it.
she was really funny! There were some pretty pointless exercises. She was a semi-hard grader, and some of the things she graded were really dumb.
Everyone seemed confused in her class, and I was unclear about what she wanted on her papers. I would not recommend her for upper level english but maybe for 110

She is easily one of the most intelligent teachers I have ever had. She is always willing to help, finding it necessary to clarify assignments and texts. If you do not understand an assingment or text, it is your fault for not asking questions.
She is very very nice and helpful. She is a pretty easy grader as long as you get everything done. She lets you turn in papers late and also gives a lot of days off.
Teaches different way of writing. A little confusing at first but its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. She is very helpful. 4 papers only(3 are 500 words or less). By the time you do all the homework exercises the papers are nearly written. Easy Grader. Lots of time off- at least 10 days. No final/midterm. Very flexible due dates.
I didn't like her teaching style, we didn't mesh well together. She has you do tons of pointless exercises and puts a word limit on 3 of the 4 papers. No midterm, no final, tons of days off.
She does whatever she can to help students understand the coursework, and I think she does a very good job. Her expectations are clear and she grades very fairly.
On the easy side, but she is really confusing and makes you do totally pointless exercises from the book. I'm sure you could find a better english prof teaching the same class. No tests though, just four papers and showing up to class. Many days off.
Stay as far away from her as you can! She sucks! Can't understand a damn word she says and she constantly changes her mind on what she wants. Not helpful, and makes you feel stupid for asking questions. This class was a waste of my life. DON'T TAKE HER!
I thought she was great. She sets aside a lot of time to help students so if you're struggling its really your own fault if you don't get help. She may be confusing at times but just ask questions, she'll clear it up for you. If you do poorly with her its your own fault because she is always willing to help.
At first, she can be a little hard to understand (accent/vague assignments), but she will clarify when you ask her. Class is usually painfull easy but comes with a good payoff on your grade and understanding of writing & rhetoric in general. She's personable and kind...exactly the type of professor that can make a difference in people's lives.
It should be known that Dr. Lan is extremely into theory and she will find some way to incorporate it. That said, some of her assignments will be confusing to those who have no background in theory. However, with an open-mind and some critical thinking the assignments are actually quite simple. All you need is effort...
One of my favorite professors! If you need extra help she is always willing to meet out of class. I have taken 3 courses with this woman and have learned a TON!
Dr. Lan is a great teacher. One of those professors that teaches in such a way that you don't even realize you are learning. She gave pretty easy assignments, but they were very helpful, as was she.
very difficult and will rip your papers apart. she might be different in 110 but 306 was horrible. i will never take her again
great teacher...requires you to come in for conferences but they totally help your paper. cancels class alot. sometimes hard to understand, but she is the nicest lady
This class can be dull if you don't have a group that participates and discusses, but luckily for me, my classmates were interested in the topic and enriched the class so much more. Lan is a great teacher and tries to remain unbias towards certain schools of rhetoric- it's a great philosophy and english class altogether.
Haxia gives a great introduction to rhetorics and the various schools of thought that go along with those schools. She does have you do daily writing on what you read at the end of the discussion, so it isn't too bad. She is very smart if you read and pay attention you should learn something.
sweet lady, easy class... get class off often for one-on-one conferences which make your papers easy
Dr. lan is the epitome of sweet old chinese lady. She is super nice, but sometimes it is hard to understand what she wants you to do. 3 of the 4 papers are under 500 words and there is usually allot of in-class work time. Has a meeting with you to go over paper and cancels class often. Didn?t learn much, but was really easy! Such a sweet lady.
She tells you how she wants you to do work, gives you some what of free range of what to write on. She is overall a great teacher and I did learn from her. Easy, so if you need a easy A in writing and learn some new tricks on the way take her.
Very nice lady, but is a hard grader and it's hard to tell what she really wants from you which makes the assignments hard to do. The class wasn't at all what i expected it to be either.
a very sweet lady who is willing to help you outside of class. class is pretty difficult and a little confusing but manageable. based off of a lot of philosophical ideas, which i was not expecting.
Waste of time and energy. sweet lady, but this class will not help you improve your writing skills. She makes you revise even the simplest assignments at least 5 times. You need to write everything her way to do well, but her way is not the style or format that is natural or common. Irritating class.
did not like her at all...finds a mistake in anything you write...did not learn one writing technique...never walked out of class with a smile on my face...all u do is write 4 papers and each one u spend like 3 weeks on...i absolutely did not like this professor
there are two ways to look at Dr. Lan's class: complain about her assignments and do poorly, or just try to understand that she wants you to be a better writer and do well. Papers were hard, but doable. Ask questions!! She is here to help!
The subject matter is pretty difficult to grasp at first, but Dr. Lan does an impeccable job at explaining things in a very clear, understandable way. She is so enthused and obviously enjoys what she does so the class ends up being easier than it really could be with a different prof. Lots of writing but interesting topics!
At first the class is great, she tells what she wants to see and only 4 papers is not too daunting. But when it comes to helping, not great. She tells you that emailing her is the best way of getting in touch w/ her. But yet if she doesn't want to help you, she just simply doesn't reply at all. Hard to get help from someone who only sees their way.
Dr. Lan is the best English professor I have ever had! Her classes are philosophically-based, which is probably why the gen. ed. students are giving her bad reviews. She is one of the only professors that was able to challenge me. She is very intelligent and I recommend her!!
Dr. Lan lays everything out for you. She tells you at the beginning, if you take her advice and do what she says, you will get an A. 4 papers no longer than 3 pages each. No final. She even took my late submissions. Papers aren't original because she basically writes them for you. Very boring class but very easy A.
Nice lady, but expects you to do your work the exact way she wants you too which gets really repetative and annoying at times. But in the end...she means well.
She is a very nice teacher, but when it comes to understanding her it is very difficult to understand her meanings behind certain ideas that she teaches. She does lay everything out for you when you write papers, which is nice. She is overall very kind and yet she is very intimidating.
If you have any other options at all take anyone else! I am not sure how she is in 110 but 306 was horrible. She is impossible to follow, has you constantly handing in papers barely giving you time to actually make them good, and tears everything apart. This class was not what I expected and she made it even worse. DON'T TAKE HER!
Very easy class. 4 papers and no longer than 500 words each. She tells you exactly how to do everything and you do it together in class. I had the 7:45 class and I didn't even mind it. Shes very nice and is willing to help you whenever you need it. I recommend her!
It makes me angry to see students ripping Dr. Lan apart. She is an extremely challenging teacher- she has very high expectations for her students but also gives them the means to achieve well. My favorite professor at UWL.
You write four papers the entire semester. Most of the work is done in class, and as long as you know how to finish a sentence, she'll love you.
Dr. Lan is one of the sweetest teachers you will ever meet. She really cares about her students and knows her research! TAKE HER CLASS! She has so much knowledge to share with you!
This class could probably be defined better as a philosophy of rhetoric course, which is awesome. The ideas and discussion facilitated by Dr. Lan go far beyond just writing. She's a great professor - you'll learn a lot.
Dr. Lan is a very nice lady, but incredibly difficult to understand, not in her speech but her inability to explain concepts. This inhibits her helpfulness as well, though she does try very hard. She enforces confusing and useless paper formats that do not help in learning to write. Sorry to say, but this class did not make me a better writer.
She uses useless formats. Her work is so hard to understand and it did not help me become a better writer
She is very helpful. The papers that we wrote were very difficult and it took a lot of patience with her and yourself to fully understand them. With each paper you get an individual conference with her that takes place of class. The class is not mandatory but if you miss it then you will be lost. She is flexible with your schedule and will extend
Just no. Half of the time you don't know what she wants. 90 minutes of class while working on the same 3 paragraph paper for 3 weeks will bore you to tears. This class did not help me to become a better writer, if anything I suffered because of it. Take someone that will prepare you to write papers..
She offers help but is not specific at all, and if you think she is being clear she ends up wanting the opposite of what you thought. It is hard to know what she wants. The times I guessed on my essays and didn't try I got 910 or 1010. Times I would really try I got C's. I would advise not taking her.
Dr. Lan doesn't seem to really know what is going on. I am working on my third paper now and I am just now understanding how she wants things done. She is not very clear on her expectations. Expect a lot of frustration. I have grown to tolerate her, but try to take someone else if you can!
Do not take Dr. Lan's Eng 110. Firstly, you will not become a better writer. You spend 90 minutes working on one simple concept and then at the end of class she decides she wants the opposite of what she has been talking about for 1.5 hours. Secondly, if you attempt to meet with Dr. Lan outside of class she won't meet outside her office hours.
I personally enjoyed Dr. Lan's class. She wants a very specific organization to your planning of papers, but once you understand it is very easy. Her conferences for every paper also help to clarify what she wants for the paper, if you are still confused just ask. Since she tells you exactly what she wants, it is very easy to get a good grade.
Goodluck understanding what she wants you to do. she is very unclear and i did not improve as a writer. this was my first college level writing class and i don't think i gained much from it.
English isn't her first language, but it's still easy to understand her, no issues there. ENG110 is entirely made up of 4 papers and attendance. Reviews and gives feedback for your paper before every class, so it's very easy to do well if you put in the effort. Class time is mostly useless, but is mandatory so just show up and listen. Not difficult
This class will be easy if you; can overlook the factor that Dr. Lan doesn't speak the best English, show up to class for you get credit, and complete the tasks given to you. Basically each class is spent working on the assignments due that day, making it easy to get all work done in class. The papers written in this class were easy and not long.
Sometimes she words things weird in lecture, but if you ask for help she is always very helpful and tries her best to help. She gives you a lot of time in class to do most of the assignment. You have an assignment due every night you had that class, but she gives you plenty of in class time and attendance does count in your score
Has heavy accent and paper requirements are hard to understand. Unclear about what she wants in papers and then doesn't tell you when asked. Very nice person, but I wouldn't recommend taking her class.
Has very clear assignments, that are step by step. Can still be confusing and unclear with what she wants exactly, but if you ask questions she is always willing to help. Wrote a total of 4 papers and I only spent probably 1 hour outside of class for each one. Easy A.
I enjoyed and learned from this course. If you need a writing intensive course, TAKE THIS ONE! It was brilliant. Her format is one group discussion (due Thursday) and one partner discussion (due Monday) each week, and they have clear questions that you answer using the book. The book is very easy to understand. Only two papers: Midterm and Final.
Her accent is not difficult to understand at all. Pros: extremely caring, although she may not seem that way. If you're good at writing, this class will be easy. Tip: Take notes during her lectures rather than daydreaming, they'll help you immensely later on. Cons: You need to be good at writing. She probably won't learn your name
I LOVED professor Lan. She is one of the nicest people I have ever met. This class wasn't to hard. There was daily homework, but it usually only took me 20 minutes to complete. Really cares about students and wants to make this class as easy as possible. She will set you up to succeed. Loved her and hope I can take her again!
Dr. Lan is a kind and genuine woman who not only cares about the content being created by the students but the overall effect it has on them. Earlier in the semester I was struggling with the workload, she personally met with me and I gained an understanding. The course has a lot of pieces to it, but she holds the answers and is willing to help.
Dr. Lan was a great professor for this class. She was accessible and very helpful if I had any questions. The class was a lot of reading and writing but the way she structures it makes it super manageable.
She really helps with any questions you have, and goes into great detail to make sure you are getting the help you need!
Lan was super caring about everyone's circumstances this semester. She was nothing close to a tough grader. If you put in what is required in your papers, you will get a good grade. The papers are also not hard at all, if you do most of your work in class you will be set!
Her essay guidelines and instructions are very confusing sometimes and she can be a harsh grader, but she is very caring and understanding with her students. Always willing to help if anyone has questions.
Every day you had class you will have homework but this helps you prepare a final draft in steps rather than all at once. Overall I do not like English but professor Lan helped me enjoy and see the purpose in it.
This class is very easy! The lectures are basically work time on papers and she goes over what to fix. She also gives a lot of examples to help revise your paper. If you ever need help, just ask her. She's very kind and thoughtful. Downside is that the homework is due the same day it's assigned, but very doable if you get some of it done in class.
Very difficult to understand during her lectures and the canvas page is set up awkwardly. English isn't her first language and it's obvious during her lectures.
She was super sweet. At first, it might be difficult to understand her but she is very smart with her teaching. 4 papers are all manageable if you go to class. Rarely homework, if you finish work in class. Usually, 50% of class is lecture and 50% is work time. She is very caring and gives good feedback. Would recommend.
Lan was one of the nicest professors I've ever had. She is extremely caring and gives really good feedback on essays. The homework is easy and manageable. There are four essays throughtout the semester and none are over a thousand words. Some times she can be difficult to understand, by I really recommend her.
Prof Lan is a sweetheart and talked over every exam with me before it was due outside of class. HOWEVER, her lectures are long and difficult to follow, and she verbally says a question for the HW each class that can be hard to understand. The readings can be skimmed. There were things in class I could not understand but I BS'd it pretty easily.
She was alright. Her lectures were quite hard to follow along with. there is no grace in what you want to write about. She tells you and it's usually writing about writing. Also, homework is due by the end of the day. She's nice and willing to help but harsh grader.
She is a very nice person and very involved with students. Every class you can basically go there and just sit and listen to her talk and do your work for that day. It is very chill and if you don't like to participate in class then it is great. She is a very easy grader so as long as you put in effort you will do good.
Professor Lan is very sweet and wants the best for her students. Sometimes she can be hard to understand but she makes sure everyone is on the same track. There is homework due the same day as it is assigned but it is manageable. She gives very good feedback that is helpful.
Professor Lan was amazing. She was super approachable and fun to talk to before class started. I'm going to be honest, sometimes it is hard to understand what she is trying to say but you can tell how hard she is trying to be clear. She is very passionate about the English language and I would 100% take her class again.
She brings you through the papers step by step and makes it clear
Professor Lan is such a sweetheart! She is so caring and always asks the class if we understand her lectures/material. She wants you to do well in the class, as well as outside of it. The exam papers can be hard if you don't go to class and take notes. However, she seems to be a lenient grader if you actively participate and at least try.
Professor Lan is amazing. She cares for her students and is always making sure we understand during lectures. She gives thorough feedback on assignments and really wants her students to succeed. There is homework due the night it is assigned but it is very doable. Overall an amazing professor and I would 100% take her again.
Dr. Lan is a great professor! Homework is due every day after class, but she gives you lots of time to work on the assignments in class. She breaks down the papers into chunks, so they are written over many lectures. It is important to go to class to understand what you need to do, but it can get boring. I would 100% recommend her for ENG 110!
She is very soft spoken, and her voice will lull you to sleep, but as long as you bring an energy drink, you will be fine. For the papers, you have to stay within an incredibly small word count, and she expects lots of detail, so it's hard to give her what she wants. She gives good feedback, and it's easy to get an A as long as you keep up.
