whatever you do, don't take this class. her exams are so tricky and hard.
boring lectures, put me to sleep -- but presents the material clearly. afer awhile, i only went to the labs and still got an A
AUGH! I've stopped going to lectures because I can't understand her. She never gives reviews for exams and goes into great detail on things she's interested in but doesn't help students with difficult material.
She is the most disorganized professor I have ever had at H.C. She does NOT know what she's talking about and obviously does NOT present the course clearly. She's H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E. Why she's paid to teach is beyond my comprehension!!
You don't need to go to lectures. USE THE CD FROM THE BOOK AND HER WEBSITE NOTES TO STUDY FOR TESTS. Her tests are almost identical to the sample tests on her site - ask her for the exact URL
Worse teacher I've ever had! Very disrespectful to student's opinions! Think's she's right all the time and that it's the student's problem for failing...Um HELLO! THE CLASS AVERAGE IS A 57! Tries to help our grade with mindless extra credit assignments
yeah, and she changes the requirements for her 6-page extra credit assignments less than a week before it's due. She has NO CLUE WHATSOEVER what she's doing as a teacher -- HORRIBLE. Easier to curve the 57 average test but NO. That's too logical!
Boring and difficult class even when I am interested in the topic. Has a heavy accent. Lectures just repeat the info that's on the website.
she is a horrible professor.she can't teach.overall, she is horrible, horrible, and one more time horrible.when the class average on exams was low,she said that she couldn't understand the grades because she had gone over everything. just bad.
She is a terrible professor. She's impossible to understand because of her accent, she doesn't answer questions, and when the average test grade was in the 50's, she claimed it was our fault for not working hard enough.
Easy A+ for me. Class avg. was in 50s, but I can't understand how anyone who studied got that. Don't need to go to lectures. I missed at least half. Just know the book well before exams and you'll do fine. Has a little accent, but clear speaker.
this professor needs a new way of teaching. boring lectures and hard tests. labs are kool. dont need to go to lecture to do well, just read the book and the notes online. you should do great that way.
Her lectures are boring and I fall asleep in most of them. I stop going to the Friday ones because I don't have a class afterwards. I don't learn anything in her class. I just use the book, cd and internet to teach me and I got way above average on the midterm. Stop complaining about her, and work.
She can't teach, and this class is so boring.
THIS IS ONE BORING A$$ CLASS!!!!! She doesnt explain herself properly and just goes on and on about nonsense. Just read your book and hope to pass.
I HAD A GREAT TIME IN THIS CLASS INFACT I MANAGED TO WAKE UP IN TIME
if you get this professor....DROP IT
she is an awful teacher. i made the mistake of ignoring the comments made of her on this site and took her anyway. when the class average was a 44 she blamed us. no matter how hard you study her questions make no sense and are confusing. Do Not Take Her!!!!
If any dean read this, please take notice all the comments. She can't teach because she really doesn't know how to explain properly. So we didn't learn much from her. Why don't u go to her class and see whether u understand what she's talking about? And also see what kind of "personality" she has.
Awful teacher, awful class. BUT- she takes most of the midterm/final questions verbatim from the study questions on the textbook website, which I don't think many people have noticed. So memorize the answers to those, and to the end of chapter questions in the book, and you should do ok on the tests
hated this class. she cant speak english and her lectures were very boring! dont really need to be there because everything you need is online and in the textbook. dont bother buying the textbook if you're not gonna acutally pass the class because its very pricey...try to avoid this professor!
Drop while u have a chance, u might understand it better if u had a different prof, if ur really interested in Weather and Climate.
Where do i even begin!! SHE WAS HORRIBLE!! cant teach and lectures are a torture! everything within this class was useless..including her!! i wouldnt suggest anyone to take this class..its only a waste of time and money!
She definitely can't teach at all. Doesn't understand her with her accent. Unfair grader. Drop it while you can.
you guys and girls are stupid. Simply gather with your classmates and make complaints to the department chair, i am sure the chair is more than happy to get rid of an incompetent instructor. complaining in here is useless, make complaints to the chair makes differences. (base on my past experiences)
I was a student who didn't care if the lecturers are boring as long as I can learn something from them & get a good grade but she changed my view. She's not only boring; she's rude & can't teach. If it's too late to drop, use the book and cd & they help u to get an A or a B & they're nicer.
Her lectures are boring as hell, and she can not teach. Please try your best to avoid this professor.
All I have to say is she is HORRIBLE. Don’t get me wrong she is a very smart lady but has no pedagogy. She has an attitude problem she makes every student feel like an imbecile. I don’t understand why she still teaching after so many complaints, what is going on with that Department.
OMG, this is the worst class I have ever took at Hunter. This professor is Hell !! She can't teach and so many students failed her Midterm and she refuses to curve it. She also dosn't give extra credit, so many people failed her class !!
smart lady but seems very stuckup, not a good teacher.sometimes talks to us as if we're stupid.horrible grader.everytime you think you do what she wants, there is always something wrong.very uptight about grammer. thinks the whole class can't write. suggested we all go to the writing center.if you ask for help you dont know if she will be nice/mean.
Boring and Horrible. Avoid this prof.!!!!!!
the worst professor EVER, her exams dont reflect her lectures, she doesnt explain concepts, she makes difficult topics even harder to uderstand, if you take this class, study from the book, its your only chance of passing
your only hope is reading and memorizing the textbook... lectures were unbearable and she made no sense. she usually can't answer even the simplest of student questions. straight-A students struggle through this woman's class. i'm sure this course could have been great... with a different teacher.
Every chapter read the book and watch the CD before the class and you will know what she talks about. It is not that bad like others say. Lots of questions on the exams are from Prentice Hall study guide excercise on the course web. You'll be fine. Don't panic. :) Lab is unbelievably easy - that helps too.
one of the best professors I've ever had. I'm European and she reminds me of my previous professors. she explains well, however not in a "high school" manner, which I personally find completely appropriate since this is a college course. she is demanding and does not lower her expectations. students who like to understand material will enjoy her.
Prof Salmun is not very clear on anything even if its the simplest of question.I don't know how anyone managed to pass this class with a decent grade. Oh yeah, make sure to go to all the labs. The tests are more complicated than it has to be. If you don't have to take her, then don't.Thepeople who seem to pass are in her face everyday-that mght wrk
I found this class to be a lot harder than I thought it would be. A lot of math and readings. Must go to all the labs. This professor is very unclear and hard to understand. I would not recommend taking this class with this professor, unless you must.
She was very demanding and disrespectful to students. She has a thick accent and is hard to understand. She's an extremely tough grader and you have to go to all the labs or else you get an F. Her tests are so hard and so tricky. I know many people that have taken this class and i dont know anyone that got higher then a C
Lab's hard, don't miss one! Lectures hard to follow, she's in every topic @ the same time. Tests are horrible, they cover the material, problem isn't whether u know the material,it's being able to understand what she's asking!! Very tricky test, very hard class, very confusing professor!
HORRIBLE! She's very unclear about whatever she is talking about. Her tests are veru tricky and she often makes mistakes on them. Like many people said, it seems as though she is not testing our knowledge of the subject, but wants to show that she has a wide vocab. DO NOT TAKE HER!
her exams are torture. she has 2 midterms which are tricky and difficult. even if you studied lab are importand try to make good in the lab. maybe u can pass. hahaha. she sucks in hottness. the problem is her exams difficulty
Horrible professor. Often lectures without a microphone, making it impossible for the class to understand what she is saying. Not that it matters because no one can follow her anyways. The tests are not written in any form of english I know. It seems she is out to make this class as difficult as possible and gets pleasure out of failing her student
Her lectures are irrelevant, but all you need to get a good grade is read the book on your own- you don't even need to attend class. If you have any questions ask her, she is very willing to answer questions. Her exams are multiple choice- so as long as you are good at mc you'll be fine.
Dont take her class. It's very hard to pass and she is not a good teacher at all.
There is no hope for anyone that takes this lady.. she was put down to fail everyone.. I would have her fired in a heartbeat if I could..NOT HELPFUL and SWEARS that she knows how to teach.. STAY AWAY FROM HER !!
does NOT know how to deliver the material..when someone asks a question she doesnt give the answer in a way that we could understand..her exams are terrible..she must copy them from somewhere else because i read the chapters and study her notes, and like 25% of it is from there. those who hav a smiley..you're probaby her... or related to her.
She's adorable but maybe not the most awesome teacher. My class was a lecture and you do fine if you read the book. otherwise you'll do not so bad anyway.
She is impossible and not clear in lecture whatsoever! It makes you not want to show up for her lecture..it seems as if she doesnt understand the material her damn self!!! so impossible and then she calls on people in this huge lecture hall...what are we in high school again??...other than that my lecture had some comfy seats that I often slept in
She is horrible!!!!!!!! Do not take her. Very demanding and the exams are very hard. Do not take her class. You'll be sorry.
Class was extreme torture!! Her lectures were just incomprehensible and the exams were not even related to the readings. She really doesnt know how to teach. This class lowered my gpa but I have no idea how other people passed her class. Must be lots of luck. Really avoid her class if at all possible, you'll be doing yourself a lot of good.
Just utterly, utterly boring. Very hard exams too.
She takes any possible interest you may have and destroys it with her boring and awkward teaching style. The exams aren't easy, and the lectures are hard to stay alert in or even bother to attend. I do not recommend this class.
Her tests are confusing and your entire grade pretty much depends on the tests. If you mess up you're in trouble. She gave extra credit assignments and I did both but somehow I managed to get a C+. She seems perfectly nice but not the sharpest pencil.
I didn't find her that difficult. Lots of resistance to her from the class though. Read the book and did the exercises from the sample tests on the internet. Got an A. What's the problem? I like a class where you are expected to think. Don't give up either. Try to understand. Get phone numbers and call your fellow students!
I took her Intro to Oceanography class, which she seemed to make out to be the most important class you will ever take. If you do not do well with tests, do not take her class. She's one of those professors that's hung up on having students remember all the numbers and percentages discussed. She's also quite brassy and extremely rude.
Not the greatest professor, but not nearly as bad as some make her out to be. The material is just downright boring. There's no way to make it interesting. If you suck at test-taking -- avoid this class! There are 3 midterms and a final -- and they're hard. She doesn't drop anything.
Unfortunately, she is a terrible professor. I am a straight A student, and I could not understand this prof. She spends a lot more time admonishing the class than teaching. Most of the class gave up. Just don't take her. I was really sorry I did. She is rude. She flat out said "No" when a student asked her to clarify a point before a test.
WORST TEACHER EVER! she explains the information in a vague way and then the tests are very complex and impossible to pass. she should be fired. its a failure on hunter college part letting her teach. her accent doesnt help. i wrote her an email and got a mess of words back from her that wasnt even proper english, and written all in caps. beware.
It's not that she's a terrible person, she just doesn't teach very well. She needs a few lessons in pedagogy, because she has problems communicating concepts to students. Read the book 9 times, and you may test well. Extremely difficult class that is not taught well by this particular professor.
She isn't the best professor but if you go to class and ask questions you'll do ok. Attendance isnt mandatory but its helps your grade. Its tuff staying awake but if you sleep read the chapters at least 3 times.People may say shes mean and her exams are hard which I agree but looking back I could have done better if i studied more for a 180 course.
Really boring and a lot of information. Tough class. She does tell you what you need to know for exams but it is so much to remember. Gives extra credit and you will need it. I struggled with this class and got a B but barely. Plenty of people fail.
I am a straight-A student and I value hard-work, but I couldn't for the life of me understand her most of the time. She's intelligent, but she's a bit ditzy and shouldn't be teaching a 100-level class. She also talks down on you when you ask her simple questions. She has no pateince for "slow" people or people who like to ask questions.
Be prepared to memorize the textbook for a test. I'm serious. She tells you what will appear on the test but it is too much to remember. Honestly she shouldn't be a teacher-- Hunter should make her go on perminent sabbatical. Many people fail this class or take the C/NC option.
This is an intro course, I don't think she is aware. She also needs to be able to speak english in a comprehensible manner if she wants to teach in this language. She is condescending and rude, she wants participation yet she has no tolerance for questions. She never answers a question, just sighs. I wouldn't take her.
She isn't as bad as every1 makes her seem. It's not an easy A but it's possible, read the textbook and stop complaining - I expected something horrible.. then I took the first exam and got a 97..my grades went to 80's after that b/c the class was hard but it's college.. you need to READ the book!! I'll admit she has tricky questions but u'll b ok
She was an amazing Professor. She is the nicest person and I recommend her highly. If you care about the class at all you will do fine.
Great Professor! Cares about her students, really wants us to understand and not just memorize.Tests are difficult because you really have to understand the material, there is no other way to do good in this class.Over all very nice professor, highly recommend her!
Terrible lecturer, hardly able to understand the topic, and extremely boring in class. People kept on falling asleep. Basically the textbook is your best friend. And this class is earth science not oceanography cuz it feels like im taking a oceanography class. I would never taken this class if absolute.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! She is a nice woman but the worst teacher I have ever had. She asks the most vague questions and gets angry when the whole class becomes silent because no one understands what the hell answer she is looking for. If this class wasn't mandated for my major I would have dropped it.
I love her. I know many people don't like her but it is only because they don't understand her and can't relate to her. She is particular all you need to do is show you are interested and willing to learn. Obviously you must work hard but she is there to help you. I Will be taking fluid mechanics with her next semester. She is also my mentor.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID she loves to fail her students.
The most confusing, boring and frustrating class I have ever taken. Salmun likes to anaylze the heck out of graphs and asks a lot of complex confusing questions. When no one can answer them, she simply picks out a random student to answer it. Her tests are short answer questions that take forever and she grades harshly.
Prof Salmun, Is an incredibly intelligent awesome lady. The class is tough but if you reach out for help and work with her you will get through. The material involves a lot of conceptual understanding . Read each chapter twice, have a good attitude, everything will fine.
Compassionate and considerate professor. I have an enormous amount of respect for her and the time she puts into teaching Earth Systems. Study hard
To all who say that she loves to fail her students.. you must not have ever spoken to her. She will not accept mediocrity, but if you work hard, make an effort to communicate with her, and do all the reading from the textbook and take notes, you will do well. She very much cares about her students, but has no sympathy for slacking or whining.
I admit I didn't like her at first because of how particular she was with grading exams. But like others said, she doesn't tolerate slacking so you have to put in a effort. As long as you read the textbook before the lectures and study for the exams, you'll be fine. If you reach out to her she is very glad to help, and she's an amazing mentor.
Very kind and passionate, just sucks at teaching. She asks either stupid obvious questions that you think is a trick q, or ridiculously hard ones that you would never be expected to know & gets frustrated when no one participates. Her tests are very hard & poorly written. Also very stubborn & refuses to be corrected even if when she is wrong.
Yes, you'll have to work for your grade and her exams are not easy but if you go to class, take good notes, and read relevant parts of the textbook, you'll be fine. Your final grade will rely heavily on how much effort you put into the class so even if your exam grades are bad, you'll be surprised with how much she bumps up your final grade
Professor Salmun is my favorite professor this semester and really doesn't get the credit she deserves. She is incredibly passionate and really wants you to understand all the material in depth. Her exams are all short answer so be prepared but going to the lectures and taking diligent notes kind of shows you what kind of questions she will ask.
It is kind of difficult to follow her lectures but it is not impossible. The material is boring but if you're willing to teach yourself, you will do fine. She doesn't do well with questions, she encourages them A LOT - she will wait until you raise your hand - but she is condescending when answering.
Prof. Salmun is passionate and intelligent about the environment and it shows through her lectures. Her tests are short/long answer and challenging -- it is clear that she really wants her students to learn. She has a tendency to get on long tangents when teaching content, but will also readily answer questions. If you can work hard, take her!
Her lectures are not very organized but if you follow the textbook you will do fine. She constantly encourages students to ask questions but really does not do well with them as she misses the point or does not answer them completely.
I really thought oceanography would be interesting but she made it really boring. Her powerpoints are heavy and she does not explain or answer questions clearly. There are a few 2 page single spaced research papers that were pretty boring to write. We also had to write weekly current events. The tests/quizzes always seem harder than what's taught.
Heavy lectures but manageable workload. 7 quizzes, Midterm, Final, 3 independent projects, 1 group project. Not a harsh grader at all. Can access question that might come up in the test through quizlet. She's very understanding, great with flexible deadlines. Out of 5 courses taken this was the easiest one but make sure you keep up with deadlines.
This class was a disaster. No organization whatsoever, she had no clue what to do with class time. Half of the semester classes were spent on student presentations. Then, she put the responsibility of teaching Matlab to the class on 3 students that had some prior experience. When that did not work, students were left to figure it out on their own!!
Professor Salmun is a tough grader, she won't grade our assignments in a timely manner even though the students had reminded her to do. In this course, we will learn Matlab and complete an assignment using Matlab, however, she provided unclear instructions. Basically, we explored Matlab on our own, which is stressful.
Call on people randomly during lectures. Doesn't allow any phones or laptops either. Confusing lectures and her assignments are unorganized. She will give you random ones during the lecture.
Worst professor. Just Drop It.
It's not like she's AWFUL, but her lectures are sooooo boring that I stopped attending even when I knew that my participation grade would take a hit. As a professor, she's not a great one, but the class she was teaching is so easy to learn by yourself that it balances out in the end. I would recommend this to get your science credit out of the way.
Unorganized and not attention grabbing, but is clearly very passionate about her field. Like her as a person just not as a teacher. Not a super tough grader as long as you stick to the general format of the sample papers she gives. Provides online version of textbook and a quiz each week on the chapter, but the chapter is gone over in class.
Terrible professor. Most of the time gets lost during her lecture. Shitty teacher ever I had.
Lectures were boring. She would sometimes have participation in which you emailed her your answer to her question. She doesn't allow the use of technology as she prefers everyone to speak and share. She calls on people randomly to answer questions. Her grading isn't clear and you wouldn't always receive the full point.
Such a weird class. No phones, iPad, laptop. Even for notes. Just points to people and calls on them. Assignments are so random and the prompt is shown for like 2 mins. I regret taking this class.
The way she teaches is boring to me. You would not know your grade till the final. I cannot follow along with her teaching pattern. If you are good at participation and have good memories then she is good for you.
Lecture could be boring, but she is very informative and it just takes you being interested yourself. She does random attendance and classwork so I'd suggest to attend as much as you can. there is ZERO tolerance for devices in class, but for exams we're allowed to use.
A ridiculous class with an even more ludicrous lab component. Monotonous lectures, negative attitude, incoherent teaching style, and rigorous grading. The tests were bloated with information; attendance would often extend 15 minutes after class ended, and participation was forced in a large class setting. Just a laughable class overall.
Educated but not a good professor. Slides haven't been updated since she started teaching in 2000 something. Studying for exams is tedious as she doesn't believe in providing study guides, and theres just too much material. As a straight A student, this was the first course where passing felt like it was based off luck. Do not take this prof.
Contrary to popular opinion, I enjoyed this class. The information was presented oddly at times but I did not expect to understand every concept from a general lecture class. Salmun is a nice professor that is passionate about her work. As long as you put in the effort, the only thing that would get in the way of an A is a harsh lab TA.
Salmun can be very difficult (ex/ if you spell her name wrong in an email ur cooked). Although W&C is interesting, lectures were boring. There's no electronics in class, (however, test are online.) If u have a good lab instructor the class can be easy, cuz I would be LOST in lectures. Knowledgeable, but kinda cheeks at teaching, imo.
save yourself. dont take this class.
doesn't have a good attitude, she looks mad 99% of the time
Salmun has a unique teaching style that can be hit or miss. The class material is interesting, but lectures can be dry. Leverage resources like Unstuckstudy and the free textbook to succeed.
