Don't take her. She's very hard.
Don't take her she could use a dictionary. That way she won't mark off points for her not knowing what something means!
She is the antichrist who has a hard time with spelling and proper pronoun usage. There is a giant chip on her shoulder and she incorrectly grades essays. You can go to her with MLA documentation and she will insist on being right instead of being fair.
She has a skewed grading system, which you dont realize until you've already busted your ass and written 25 responsive papers that add up to 2 points worth of your final grade. They should rename the course black writers, since thats all she focuses on.
I cannot stand this woman. I work for three weeks on a research paper, and she watns it revised after only looking at the first page. She is so unfair, and treats people like dirt. She talks down to you like you are nothing. Oh and she is "always&quo
I didn't have as much problem with her as did the other people. I think if you showed her that you're serious about the subject and is actually willing to learn, you'll do just fine. If you want an easy A, don't take her, but otherwise I think she's OK.
Did she graduate high school? She can't spell and takes off points for the correct use of grammar. Don't even think about telling her she made a mistake. She starts foaming at the mouth and her head spins around on her shoulders.
Wow- I am very surprised by all of the negative comments. I learned more from this class then I have from any of my other classes. It is true that she is difficult.She is also very passionate about the subject, and if you are as well, then you will walk away from this class with a well earned A.

This class is hard and you get lots of work but she is nice and always willing to help you.
A challenging class but Professor Carlos helped me a lot. Although English is not my first language, I passed with a very good grade. Prepare for this class because you will get a lot of work.
Her class is too structured and doesn't allow you creative liscence to express yourself. Her method of teaching is too controling and doesn't allow for individuality. She's realy nice but she's quite rigid.
She thinks it's harvard and not brookhaven. She should be teaching African American Studies not American Literature. She's obsessed with being black which is ok, but it's almost to the point of racism.
The class was as good as an english class could be at first, but as the class went along, she got farther and farther behind from her schedule. Like another said, she made such a big deal on the research paper, to then give it back for revisement. She is also very slow to return emails, sometimes it would take up to 4 or 5 days to hear back.
I had to drop out of the class due to her general attitude and level of clarity. Some comments here indicate that dropouts are stupid, but I'm actually excelling with another professor. It's all relative.
After one essay was turned in, she assigned another essay. She keeps piling on too much work and she knows that the semester is going to end in two weeks but she still keeps piling work on. I should have dropped the class when I had the chance.
She teaches freshman 1302 as if it was a sophmore english class. She butchers students one assignment after another. Her teaching technique was terrible.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had! Never ever take her if you don't want to lower your GPA. She gives good grades to those loosers who suck up to her!! She gives so much work to do and gives ugly grades no matter how great the assignment is (if you are not her favorite).
She could use a reality check its not the 1960s anymore she preaches more den she teaches. You never know your grade so just hope you can passs/drop before its 2late. Thanks for the paper erry two days - i like very much.

I dont think she realizes that writing is our life!!!! She also doesnt understand that we have other classes!!! The work load was ridiculous, we arent Enlgish majors and this isnt Harvard!!!!!

Do not take this professor for anything. She is tedious and you will not learn anything. How much can you drag out the most simple concepts. A lot of busy work for no return.
This woman has this idea that Literature is life. And that is all. It doesn't matter if you work full time, and are attending school full time. All the papers must be due every day, a 2 page paper every single class, and not to mention, all the big essays and research assignments. I had no life for an entire semester. All that work for nothing.

This instructor is horrible - someone thinks tenure means good educator - She gives nothing of herself in classes - a total robot. Avoid at all costs.
Writing assignments due every class period. Gives guidelines after turned in work. Group projects are abundant. Makes it difficult to know exactly what teacher wants in order to get an A. Assignments are not intersting and very difficult. Research paper is over a play that is assigned. Alot of work is expected without having it worth alot of point

I took this professor for American Lit. I enjoyed every minute of it. I learned about African American authors that I'd never heard of. She gives a lot of assignments, and you have to be willing to earn the A! I appreciate that she challenges us like any professor at an Ivy League school would. Great class! Great teacher.
I really can't stand her teaching style. I am sure she is a nice person outside of class, but inside wrong profession. High school level work, high school work load. I thought I was in college. My high school english classes were harder.
Clarity on assignments is poor, work load is crazy, and she has a chip on her shoulder!

She is a great teacher if your planning on obtaining or pursuing an English major. There is a lot of reading and writing, so definitely don't take it with other over-whelming classes. She teaches on a University level, so you are better prepared. You will learn a lot so stay on track and don't miss classes.
Love her. She is a wonderful professor who actually loves what she does and wants to teach you something. Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy A. Mrs. Carlos takes literature seriously and you should too. Take this professor if you actually want to learn something new.

She isnt very clear on how she wants her essays, so youll get a lot of rewrites she isn't very good at organization, or sticking to the syllabus. She likes her class, but the students don't within a week, we had half the class already. If you want this as just a class to take then dont...A HECK OF A WORK LOAD..paragraphs due everyday..to her liking
Must work on communication as well as organizational skills. Treat students like high schoolers with far too many menial assignments. Not very helpful. Got a good grade but busted my ass for it...

Almost everyone in my class hated her. Her directions are never clear. She isn't very student friendly-if you ask "too many" questions, she treats you like you're dumb. She grades really hard. I wouldn't suggest taking her class.

I took her for American Literature. Her class is challenging but if you show up and ask questions you can pass. She does give a lot of work but it's worth it.She is very helpful. I came from UTA & never did a research paper but I had to for her class. She was really helpful. I expected to get a low grade but I got a B+
She is a wonderful Professor. You will work hard. However, you will know how to write well once she finishes with you. Very charming, yet direct with what she expects. Work hard and it will pay off.
She's confusing, and she grades other student's essays hard. You don't learn much or grow in writing skills. If you miss her class she will show treat you differently in a rude way. I do not recommend this professor.
Please think twice before signing up for her class. She's a great person but doesn't take into consideration the other students have other classes and or jobs outside of school. Frequently change is due dates and is very unclear on her directions. Has no empathy for her students who are struggling.
If you want to get a good grade AND learn the subject at the same time, I recommend not to take her. If you don't follow EVERY,SINGLE,STEP that she says than she'll take a lot of points. For example in my class we started with 30 students but in the end we only had 6 left and only two passed. Professor Carlos is the worst professors at Brookhaven.
This woman belongs to a 'prestigious' institution because she has high expectations on the essays assigned. She gives an essay every few weeks, but she won't do much to help you on it. She refuses to offer help on basic grammar concepts, saying students should already know them. Take her ONLY if you're a seasoned English speaker. Not an easy A.
Do not take this class if you're not an English major. I have 5x the homework from this class as I do from my 3 other classes combined. She is not helpful and does not care if you drop, pass or fail. She'll just keep assigning homework.

I took this class after not being in school for 20+ years and found it hard. At first. There is a lot of reading and research to be done but that's what college is about! Follow her directions, read them all and then simply.. do what's asked of you. Take notes in class, come to class, participate and you'll be looking at a good grade.

Honestly, wish I would have looked her up before I took the class. This is the hardest class I have ever taken. I work two jobs and take the bus to school, so needless to say, I missed a few classes. All of my other teachers understand and they work with me on assignments, but Carlos did not. Some people are not meant to teachers. Very disappointed.
Warning!She is very forgetful. She puts in all grades by the very day that all the grades are due. So, until the last day of school you currently have a 30 as an overall grade. & if she messes up on one of your grades there is no turning back because it is YOUR fault. not hers. she completely rude and disrespectful. DO NOT TAKE HER. Save your GPA.
Do not say I'm not warning you! WORST TEACHER EVER. I wish I was only exaggerating. As of now, I have a fricken 30 because she doesn't post grades till the last day of school. By the end of the semester only 3 of us attended class. She is incredibly rude. She talks to you like you are stupid, which makes you not want to participate. DON'T TAKE HER.
She says you need specific books for this class. So there comes you buying the textbooks. (be aware that you have to buy her textbooks not rent). then comes a week later and says that you don't have to buy the textbooks, she gives them for free in this website. If she feels like you aren't paying attention she will call you out in front of everyone

Professor does not teach but only reads from board, instructions are very confusing and repetitive, does not engage with students (only reads to them).

Worst professor at Brookhaven! She is terrible at teaching but great at scolding and criticizing class. She grades incredibly hard, gives confusing directions, assigns so many papers and gives meaningless, confusing quizzes--all the answers are supposed to be on a paper she gives out but somehow we always get low grades. Do not take her!
I once took a ENGL1301 class at TexasTech and wow, this class was as if a substitute teacher trying to teach. Do not take this class, Professor Carlos literally posts everything online, pulls it up during class and reads of the board. Doesn't offer any sort of constructive feedback, gives no guidance, unbelievably vague and overall waste of time

Prof. Carlos is one of those educators who is nice if you stay on her good side. She's cool, but if you mess around, you're toast. I took her before COVID, so I don't know what she's like online. She's not very flexible & that hurt when suddenly the articles she assigned became inaccessible. Just stay on your best behavior and you'll be fine.
