Very difficult class, but he is very helpful...Must work hard, but you'll learn a lot!
too hard at grading
Very hard class, he grades very hard also
He is an amazing professor. He is so helpful, and his suggestions can dramatically improve your writing. But be prepared for a lot of work.
Diehl is a hard professor, and grades on a very strict scale. But, he teaches synthesis very well and basically pounds it into your head!
He's awesome and understanding. He also makes things lighthearted. At the same time, he expects very good work, but he helps students do this very well. He's brilliant!
Heath is one of the greatest teachers I've had. If you follow his instructions you will not only get a good grade in his class, but you will also learn how to write excellent papers. I'd suggest him to anyone.
He assigns a ton of work and you will work VERY hard in this class but hes an AWESOME prof. He relates to the class, explains things well, and sincerely has a passion for the subject that is definitely contangious. I would recommend him if you truly want to take something out of this course!!
hes a good teacher come here prepared to work, u will defin understand synthesis when you are here. i would recommend this class if u like a challenge and are prepared to work...he does have a hard grading scale but its fair.
I felt he was the most unapproachable teacher I have ever had. I also didn't enjoy the way he singles students out and makes more work then necessary.
Doc Diehl is awesome. My writing is so much better after his class. But don't let your guard down, his class is by no means an easy A. Be prepared to work. He can be funny at times, and lame at other times (which is a different kind of funny). Try to get 111X or 112X, then you take his class in the computer lab. Asking about what THE CAT has to say when drafting papers in class on the big screen.

INCREDIBLY passionate and intelligent. If you're looking for a true instructor, Diehl is your man. He's somewhat eccentric, but it keeps the mornings interesting seeing he teaches v.v. early in the a.m. He's a particular grader, but not too harsh. A great teacher.
I can't stand this guy!!! He is a really hard grader! My papers were well-written and he gave me C's on most of them. Thanks to him, my GPA went down :(
Dr. Diehl is one of the greatest teachers out there. He is very clear and helpful. My writing has improved immensly because of him. Be prepared to work hard, however. But be sure to do the assignments at the same time because they're very, very helpful!
I absolutely loved Dr. Diehl, so much that I tried to take another class with him but it was full. He is very clear on what he is looking for, and he doesn't make you do a ton of other fluff stuff like some english teachers do. He is also very funny. One of my favorite teachers ever by far.

He is a wonderful teacher. I would reccomend him any day!
As an english teacher he is great and is a very nice guy that will help you a lot! BUT with honors courses he gives a VERY large load. BE AWARE of taking him for an honors class esp. if you have a very hard load already. GREAT guy, and challenging and helpful! just be aware you WILL be busy!!!! (which is not always a bad thing)
I've heard that he is a great English teacher. However, he turned Critical Thinking into an English class. A very good teacher, fun class and demands a lot from students but in a good way. But don't get him for Critical Thinking unless you like to write a lot on top of all the actual critical thinking homework.
You have to work hard to get an A in Heath's CT, but it's rewarding when you do! Tough class, but Heath really cares for you, and helps you understand what you need to do. He communicates well with the class, and has a lot of passion for his work.
difficult class. hard concepts to understand. he is set in his ways and pretty biased. a nice person, but would not recommend this professor.
Very nice guy but would not recommend taking him. he is very tough. I spent about ten hours on each assignment and still am barely passing. He talks like there are multiple ways to answer some of the CT Q's and its cool in class but when you do sumin diff on an assignment he never understands it. (use your CT skills and figure it out) DONT TAKE
Dr. Heath was awesome! I recommend him for english 111. His syllabus had everything he expected in it and he is always willing to help fix up a paper!
I do not reccomend taking. He is very nit-picky.
I took both his Honors Critical Thinking class and his English 112 class. Critical thinking by itself is a difficult course no matter what teacher you have. I think that he does an excellent job going over the material and he also includes movies so it isn't just taking apart articles the whole time. He is an English teacher so he's kind of picky.
Heath was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He was a very hard grader, but he helped with everything. He offered in class help and also help outside of class. He explains everything to the fullest extent and makes writing fun. I passed his class with an A+ in the first semester of freshman year. He is great.
Heath is the best professor/teacher I've ever had. His Great Ideas class is intense (five papers, mid-term, final, and a project), but I learned a lot.
TAKE HIM!!!! HE IS THE BEST TEACHER~ If your not good at writing, he will make you good!!!! TAKE HIM!
I love Heath. He was and still is my favorite professor. His classes are very difficult, especially Great Ideas, but they're very rewarding in the end. If you want a professor that is challenging and will teach you something, then take any class Heath teaches.
He loves his job and you can tell.. he is funny and willing to help, as long as you go to class you will be fine. Helps a lottt in writing the papers, makes it easy to understand and grades fairly. I would definitely recommend him
I absolutely love Professor Diehl. He is a fantastic teacher and I learned so much from him.
Diehl is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and understandable. He is helpful and creative with assignments. I highly recommend.
Absolute FAVORITE professor in my time here. Took him for GSW and my honors class this semester. He'll make you work, but it's all worth it, and he's very helpful if you need it. His classes were so much fun that they became the highlight of my week.
I loved GSW with Diehl. He has very high standards, but is very willing to help his students succeed and better their writing. He makes class fun and is really nice. I would highly recommend him as a professor.
Heath was extremely interesting in class and always had something valuable to say. He grades papers in a very distinct way, and if you can catch onto how he wants you to write then you will do well.
Heath is by no means an easy professor. He will certainly challenge you. If you're in the honors program he should be your dream professor. I learned more from him than I would have imagined possible in a class. Very approachable and helpful. All around great guy.if you take Critical Thinking with him you'll want to take his Great Ideas class too!
Heath is my Favorite teacher!!!! I didn't even do overly well in his classes, however, I can easily say I learned A LOT. Heath always has his stuff together and is very prepared. He's also very relatable and hilarious. If you're a slacker, don't take him. If you're interested in learning, you will not regret taking him, no matter the grade you earn
One of the most challenging classes, but also one of the absolute best.
Dr. Diehl is a good professor. However, his class is a LOT of work. He is very willing to help and makes what he wants clear, but be prepared for demanding assignments. Also, I found that a lot of the readings were never used in class (such as articles) but were still required.
I absolutely love Heath! He is my favorite professor because he is brilliant, but he is also very interesting as well. His classes are full of great discussion as long as you participate. His class is a lot of readingwork, but I loved every minute of it. He truly cares about his students and is really fun to be around.
Heath has been my favorite professor so far. He really makes you think in his classes and its 100% okay to disagree with him if you have a sound argument to base it upon. Not only does he help you in class, but he helps you grow as a person, especially in his Great Ideas class. His grading is hard, but you don't take Heath's class for an easy A.
Dr. Diehl has been one of my favorite professors so far at BGSU. He is helpful, and respectful to all his students. His assignments are tough, but have been the most influential to me as a student.
Fantastic teacher. This was seriously the most thought-provoking class I've ever taken, and it honestly does make you a better and stronger critical thinker. The workload is quite large, I'll admit it, but it is all justifiable and definitely worth it. Take him if you can!
Dr. Diehl was one of my favorite professors. He's really good about giving you feedback if you write your rough drafts ahead of time. Visit his office hours often! This really helped boost my grade!! Ask TONS of questions! He is a tough teacher, but he is also very nice and not intimidating at all, so talk to him if you have any questions.
Heath is an extremely good professor. He gives thorough, constructive feedback on all assignments and is genuinely dedicated to making sure you are able to do your best. Disclaimer though: he is a very hard grader, and has a personality that does not agree with everyone (sarcastic at times, a little blunt). If you give your BEST, you'll do great.
Heath is a wonderful person and professor. I first had him the second semester of my first year as my honors Great Ideas prof and have taken two of his HRNS4000 seminars and he is now advising my senior Honors Project. Tough grader but very fair, will work with you to the end and gives very thorough feedback. I HIGHLY recommend him!
Diehl has lots of readings to do often, but as long as you stay on top of things it's easy. My class was all discussion based with three papers and tests which he really will work hard if you do. Loved Diehl!
He is the epitome of a crappy professor. He doesn't deserve to teach because he expects students to be geniuses and know everything he knows. I feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with him.
Dr. Diehl's class was discussion based, so you had to do the readings (roughly one book every two weeks). The class was interesting, and Diehl is funny and will treat you like an adult. Keep up on the work though-- there is a mini paper every two weeks and a massive final project. Go to his office hours- they were super helpful.
Heath is definitely passionate about what he teaches, however, this class is a HUGE commitment. There are numerous time-consuming assignments throughout the year, plus a final project that is worth half of your grade. He is super nitpicky, and a VERY tough grader. Nevertheless, if you put the work in, this class is very much worth the investment.
While Heath certainly cares about the subject matter, and gives students a push that we sometimes need as lazy college students, at a certain point, it just becomes too much. Certain assignments are given huge weights, and since he grades insanely toughly, there is little room for error. One F can guarantee you out of an A! Lots of reading and work
In class discussions were always fun and interesting, but there is a large amount of out of class work. Also, your grade is dependent on only a few projects so each score can make or break you. Overall, I enjoyed the class but it was definitely challenging.
I loved Dr. Diehl's class! He is hilarious and has so much character. He is definitely a tough grader and all of the grades are from the second half of the semester. If you want to do well in this class, you will need to put in lots of time. My best advice is to go to his office hours, he is super willing to help! Challenging but worth it.
Be prepared to put aside everything you know about analytical essays for one semester, kiddos! This man will always want more from you but sometimes you just don't have more to give. It was a nightmare and I would never take him for English again. The people who had him for Honors loved him though!
Dr. Diehl is a fantastic person and teacher. I've had him for a couple classes and loved it. We always have intellectual discussions in class and I'm always learning interesting things. He is so funny and friendly. He grades hard but his feedback is good so you can always improve and do better on the next assignment.
Heath is great! I would really recommend him to anyone that asked. If you go to class, do the work, and study for exams then you can easily pass this course. He gives really good feedback on your papers! Overall 10/10
I love heath as a person and professor, however at times I didn't enjoy his class because of how much I had to read and have discussions. I would defiantly take him again though.
Dr. Diehl's class was certainly tough at times, but he cares a lot about your success and the work that you put in is what you will get out. He was very good at teaching critical thinking, and there were many class activities that I found beneficial in helping me learn critical thinking skills. Overall, it was a valuable class experience.
Where do I begin with Diehl? I cant tell if I love him or am bothered by him. I do believe he has some good feedback and ideas. My problem with him is that he holds himself above others. Very difficult class/professor. But also willing to help you. Work hard and get on his good side. Expect to read and participate.
Diehl is by far my favorite professor, but he also makes you WORK for it. We read a total of 2 novels, 4 plays, and various poems. He gives great feedback on papers though and makes sure that all subject material is accessible to students with different backgrounds, majors, and interests. It is a hard class, but Diehl makes it worthwhile.
Heath is such a nice professor! Ask him about his cats-he'll talk for hours. He does fun activities, induces thoughtful discussions, and gives good feedback. He is a tough grader, but it's a fun class and you get to know everyone in the class through discussion and peer reviews. Be sure to read thoroughly! And be prepared to buy lots of books!!
He grades fair but going to his office hours really helps!
Great teacher, really pulls your creativity out. Hard classes but worth the work!
I think that he's a really interesting person and you should try to get on his good side. I personally read every book that he assigned and found the class was not very hard to participate it. If you do not read it is very hard. This class made me think a lot and I am really glad that I took. The presentation at the end of the semester sucks.
I absolutely loved taking his Critical Thinking class this semester! He makes class feel short because of how interesting the material is and his great sense of humor. You will have to work, but overall his grading is very fair and he gives great feedback. He is my favorite professor at BG so far! Take this class if you can.
Diehl does a great job but he definitely isn't for everyone. He doesn't hand out many grades so I would recommend attending his office hours, participating in class to get on his good side, and doing all of the required reading. I definitely had to work for my grade, though I did find this class to be very insightful and fun (lots of group work).
He's super smart and a really great guy... but you need to be ready to do a lot of reading, thinking, revising, and just work in general. In HNRS 2010 I got an A, but it was close. Lots of group projects and projects in general. He is very willing to help you, and take advantage of that! Go to office hours and DO NOT put off any of the work!
Dr. Diehl is a nice dude, but his expectations are ridiculous. I spent the large majority of my time on this class even though it has nothing to do with my major. A lot of projects that he grades very toughly. And a ton of reading for the class. And not that much class discussion. I would not recommend putting yourself through this.
While Heath is a very hard grader and has high expectations, I don't think I've ever had a better professor. He's so caring about his students and pushes us to do our best. I learned so much during class discussions, and I think I walked out of his class a different person. He challenges us to think critically and question the world around us.
Heath will make you work for your grade. If you get an A, you didn't just luck into it. Expect to read a lot and expect to participate to stay in his good graces. With that being said, if you are struggling, email him and listen to his feedback. He is tough, but he does care about his students and he does care that you succeed in his classes.
Diehl is a good professor if you like reading and writing every week, along with introspection on yourself. As someone who doesn't like either for one reason or another, I felt overwhelmed, lost, and ultimately hated taking the course. If you don't like all the reading and writing, pick another professor.
Heath is a great guy, but his lectures and discussions can be confusing which makes him a mediocre professor. Sometimes I feel like he believes his ideas are superior to his students'. If he does not like what you have to say, he will give you a failing grade. If he does not think your ideas are thought out enough, he will give you a failing grade.
love love love diehl as a human but gives a tremendous amount of work to first year kids and did not like my style of writing.
Very articulate writer and critic. I took him for both HNRS 2010 and HNRS 2020, and while I didn't complete the latter course, it was through no fault of the professor's. He actually provided me a substantial amount of leeway with regards to grading opportunities and reached out to me when no other professor did. 10/10, will take again.
Diehl is a great professor that really cares for his students. His class was a lot of hard work, but I learned so much about myself that by the end, it felt worth it. His grading is hard on essays, but always go to his office hours, and he will read any draft you have!!! This class is not an easy A though.
Avoid this class at all costs. He will blatantly fail you on papers or homework, he does not care. End of semester and you are barely passing? He will give you a 60% on a paper you worked so hard on. You have a few assignments that are a large percentage of your grade and he jams them all into the last month.
I really wanted to like this class but Dr. Diehl made it impossible. He assigns way more homework than any other section of this class and wants you to only critically think his way. Also, if he doesn't like your writing style you are screwed. I know this because my roommate and I worked together on a quiz and I got a 100 while she got a 70.
Dr. Diehl is a very good professor and will reshape how you critically think. He has high expectations and will challenge you. This is not a class that you can glide through without putting in effort. He will certainly make you work for your grade through homework, quizzes, and projects. There is a lot of reading and class discussions.
Dr. Diehl has been hands down my worst professor ever. He is rude and inconsiderate of different writing styles other than his own, which is ironic because the entire premise of his class is to critically think and be inclusive to all different types of ideas and styles of people. Also he offers zero help to better yourself in and out of class.
Dr. Diehl is the worst teacher I've ever had. He teaches this course like a 3000s writing class. DO NOT TAKE HIM. If you somehow manage to get stuck with him, turn your papers in early to get feedback and do everything he suggests, even if you don't like it. He is the toughest grader I've ever had and the class is almost all papers. Good luck.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. You really have to work to do well in his class. But he is one of the best professors I've ever had. He gives a ton of feedback and is always available to review drafts. TAKE ADVANTAGE of his office hours. He is a really great guy and will give you help if you need it.
I love Dr. Diehl, he's an amazing professor. He's an easy person to talk to about anything. He's pretty tough on grading, but when you submit a rough draft he gives you great feedback so you can make your work the best it can be. He makes his grading clear, and after he grades something he gives you feedback on why he graded the way that he did.
Alright, so let's start with Diehl. His grading is opinion and he is pretty arrogant, can be a nice guy but not a great prof. The classes were so boring it was a struggle to go. The curriculum for the class itself also seemed dumb and I don't think there was any point to it. Not sure what I even learned. Almost dropped honors it was so bad.
Dr.Diehl is definitely a hard grader, you have to be ready to work hard to be successful in his class. Also, one of the big assignments is a group project which isn't ideal because I want to be graded on my work and not the work of others. As a person, he is a really nice guy and is very knowledgeable and willing to help when you're struggling.
Dr Diehl was great person, but a terrible professor. Grades based on his own opinions and beliefs and nothing in the class is based on facts. Everyone typically wrote the same thing, but some received significantly lower grades, because they had different opinions than Diehl. Would avoid the honors program after this class, but avoid Diehl.
Very smart guy. Somewhat lecture heavy. None of his homework is busy work, all of it will definitely take time + make you think. There is a decent amt of work but it's manageable, he is very understanding and spaces out large assignments. The ARQ reading is pretty much optional besides the Niceties, def read that u will need it. Interesting class.
Wasnan easy class, but Dr. Diehl was a good professor and was always prepared to answer anyway questions you may have
Dr. Diehl is one of the least engaging professors I've ever had. The discussions held in class are a complete waste of time because he never asks any follow up questions. He never challenges any of the students ideas or asks anyone to elaborate. The class is entirely project based with unclear distinctions between A's and B's and is just a bad time
Overloads Canvas with every conceivable fact about the course, hard to find anything. Grades on his beliefs, grades slow. Every class is the same, waste of time & money, learned nothing, considered dropping honors. Boring. Material is always controversial or political. Leaves AUDIO feedback on assignments which is diabolical, always 3+ minutes.
Firstly, I love Dr. Diehl. He is funny easy to get along with. However, you definitely have to work to get a good grade in this class. He is a tough grader, but he is always willing to help if you ask. Also, he leaves audio feedback on projects, which I liked. Plus, it shows that he takes time to focus on each individual student.
There are requires readings but Dr. Diehl makes sure they are interesting and you learn something from them. You can tell he actually cares about his students, and he always pushes you to visit his office hours if you need help. He explains ideas very well and makes sure everyone understands topics before moving on.
Dr. Diehl lets you know exactly what he expects from you every day of class. Class is often activity based as opposed to an hour long lecture, so I never felt bored. Keep in mind that there is one group project, but it is very manageable if you give yourself enough time.
I went back and forth on my opinions on Professor Diehl. He is a caring person and conversation is enjoyable, but his workload is insane. Be prepared to be reading and doing work every night. One project comes after another, and it becomes a bit too much at times. His grading is random, and you can never gauge how he will grade your work.
Diehl is a great guy who works with students in a way that will allow them to succeed. Most classes are discussion-based, where Diehl allows students to share their own opinions. The literature chosen is controversial, and much discussion was slanted one way or another, but not by Diehl. Lots of projects, but you have all semester to complete them.
