I love this guy...my favorite professor thus far at college. If only Gonzaga would hire more forward-thinkers like him, this university could be really progressive. Loves his coffee and pipe tobacco...A real lone ranger.
Full of himself. Always seems to have a small sneer hovering over the corners of his lips. Makes sure the class knows his political views.
His clothing is a little wierd. He has got the French cowboy look, but easy class. Take him
Class is pretty easy. Herrick is a little wierd and smokes a cigarette at any opportunity, but he knows what he is talking about. He's a flaming liberal and has random political discussions where we find out what he thinks. Only five papers and a grammar quiz. If you can stand his political views and wierdness then take the class.
He's pretty much a laid back professor. Gives ample time to write papers. Not a difficult class at all
Herrick is the friggin man! He's really cool about the essays, gives you correction drafts and stuff, and he only comes of as liberal if you're hardcore conservative. He's moderate from what I see. He tries to make you think and discuss so you learn about yourself and your ethos. He's very helpful with essay questions and in NO WAY a snob.
I couldn't have said it better than the guy underneath. I sometimes would watch him sitting outside the Admin building drinking his coffee in the morning when its rather chilly and realize how laid-back he acts, and actually is. He helps you go over your drafts, and would sometimes throw in a couple of inclass essays.
Great guy, great prof., interesting and helpful. multiple drafts on papers as well as one late turn in. but the best part is he is interesting. very socially aware and wants you to get understanding of the world, but doesnt press his views on you at all.
He presented his intensely liberal views as absolute fact so I felt like I was being fed propaganda for 90% of his class, but if you can sit through it his class is a piece of cake. He only gives five writing assignments and you get to redo one of them if you need to.
he is a really good teacher and talks alot about current events, which is a nice change from normal english classes. You have a great freedom of choice when it comes to writing papers. He grades farly easy so if u just write the paper and put a little thought into it you will be fine.
I loved this class. I usually don't think my writing is that great but he made me feel like it was pretty good and that made me enjoy the class more. It was also funny getting papers back with coffee rings on them. Great teacher.

Herrick is a source for never ending wisdom. love love love this class. Interesting political twist. Herrick is witty and interesting to listen to. He keeps students' attention (esp for a engl 101 class). His feeback on papers is very helpful and encouraging! bombdotcom teacher
Very strong liberal bias- gets in the way of the class. Socially aware which is good, but this class should focus on english, not political views and democracy. If you don't write following his directions, good luck. He seemed laid back in the beginning, but after taking his class for a semester, I cant stand him.
This guy looks like a pirate. He's really layed back. He really gives you the grade you diserve but no worries because he's really helpful outside of class. Really aproachable and nice. No final--just a research paper. I would definately recommend taking him!
Super cool professor- encourages people to think and write about important issues while using the curriculum- always interesting- seems like a really thoughtful guy.
he is more of a polysci teach. his class has very little to do with english and he is a hard grader. really nice guy, who loves opinionated people. he smells like smoke and is a really funny teacher, but i don't think i learned about english at all.
LOVE HEATH! He's probably one of the most entertaining and laid-back profs I've ever had. He makes grammar interesting, which is a feat in itself, and he allows so much freedom in writing! Definitely a taker - highly recommended. (No final, either.)
Ignore all lukewarm comments; you absolutely will benefit from this class. He does have a slightly liberal slant but it makes class dicussion all the more interesting. Herrick knows how to connect with students and is an engaging lecturer. Freshmen, take this class, this is what all college classes should be.
Really good professor with an interesting class. He is really helpful and willing to meet with you and give advice whenever you need to. Not too hard of a class. I didn't like how much political discussions we had in class.
In order to proceed through college you need to know how to write well. Heath will help you do that. You'll also experience discussions about current world issues that no other comp class will offer. Very approachable outside of class, lets you do a rewrite, is interesting, and gives no final. Ingredients for a well-earned A.
Heath is an amazing teacher. He is very clear on his assignments, and you don't get too many to do. You get one two week extension on any essay you choose, and one re-write. Not to mention, he grades fairly easy and you actually do learn a lot in his class. I strongly recommend him as a teacher!
I would HIGHLY recommend taking Heath for English! He's witty, so he makes class fun, and he knows exactly what he's talking about and is willing to make it clear no matter what. Great professor!
Pretty interesting class, especially considering that it is a comp class. It deals more with current events than it seems like other comp classes do. There are 3 papers and 2 in-class essays. You get an extension on one paper of your choice and an opportunity to rewrite one. Not a difficult grader, but fair. I would definitely recommend this class!
Really interesting class, mostly political though. He is really nice and will help you if you ask, but sometimes he offers too much and it becomes confusing. He addresses controversial issues and really promotes debate. He is a great professor and I would definitely recommend him.
Easy class. Recommended if writing isn't your strong suit. Class is useful most of the time but he wastes at least one week watching a long piece of propaganda on the "horrendous nature" of WalMart, clearly showing his socialist views.
Proffesor Herrick did an excellent job in making this class interesting. He was able to teach the material efficiently and clearly to his students. There are only 4 papers that you have to write throughout the semester in which he gives you a lot of guidance and peer review time which is extremely beneficial. The comments he provides on these paper
I couldn't stand this class; if you don't write about what he agrees with, then you won't get a good grade. Appeal to his political views, or your screwed.
Class is a comb. of comp., philosophy, poly sci. & current events w/in the context of writing. I truly enjoy the class. He takes his teaching serious, but has a quirky sense of humor which helped me relax & begin to enjoy the class. EVERY freshman should be so fortunate to take his class. Wish he taught other classes. I'd take them. Genuinely nice
Prof.H. ? AMAZING prof & class!Articulate, defend & communicate a stance on an argument is the basis of the class. He addresses contro. issues & promotes debate. The whole world opened in his class. Never pushed his op., but allowed you to come to your own conclusion, presentend alt. views. Our class op.- Prof.H. now 2 graduation ? We?d be golden!
I signed up for his class cuz this older lady took his class last sem. Mr. Herrick is a really cool professor. He knows his stuff & does a great job of telling & showing the class. Some things I didnt get in HS make sense now. He's also a friendly&helpful professor & cares whether we understand stuff. I'm liking Eng class & I didt use too. COOL
GU needs more professors who think and teach like Mr. Herrick! He doesn't push his views on you, but he does put you in the center (figuratively) of the debate and asks you to view the issue from many different directions & perceptions. It forces you to think outside the box of perception. His presentation is awesome plus he's witty & approachable.
He is an awesome teacher! I love him and really enjoy his class! He is interesting not too hard of a grader! I must take at gonzaga!!
Awesome prof!! He's super interesting and understands it's a 101. Essay-based class, no final. Attendance and reading is NOT mandatory to get an A. He's also extremely helpful and funny. Take him.
Most amazing English professorI've ever had. He made the assignments interesting and actually fun to write. Not a tough grader but still pushes you to be a better writer. Very willing to work with you outside of class. Lots of class discussion and eye opening debates. Makes you think. A MUST HAVE professor!
Mr Herrick is a genuinely nice person. Writing clearly & concisely is a struggle 4 me. He made me believe in myself as a student and a writer. He offers const. criticism & makes you want to work harder. It's cool he will sit down with us as a class & talks to us like he cares about us as a person --hope he teachers other classes -- def. my fave!
An extremely interesting character! The subject he teaches is boring, but definitely not the adjective I would use for the professor himself. Herrick is weird yet intelligent and has so much insight. A perfect professor for a class that only requires four papers and nothing else. Glad I took him!
I wasn't sure about Pr.Herrick, but a woman in my history class told me 2 give him a chance & not judge on 1st imp. 1stlesson! I learned so much about writing,&the world beyond myself. He made me think about issues from all angles & to write with that in mind. I WISHED he taught other classes - it would be a great continuation of 101! My FAVE PRof!
Herrick was pretty awesome. He made the class about more than just writing and honestly taught critical thinking better than my critical thinking professor. You see a bit of his political views in the class that I didn't always agree upon but at the same time the class was very open for discussion and he did not press his views in the slightest.
Professor Herrick is awesome! Upon entering the class I was not very interested in writing, but his class sparked my interest. He makes a boring subject interesting. He is also hilarious. He is very helpful if you have questions. He gives constructive feedback on every assignment. After taking his class I feel that my writing has improved.
Herrick is a really chill dude, and you can tell that just by looking at him. He is an easy grader on papers, and allows plenty of time for them to be written! You don't need to buy books because he will go over the EXACT material in class the next day...TAKE HIM.
Great Prof! A bit rough with grammar and mechanics, but he was a copy editor so I guess that's to be expected! But spent a lot of time helping me with my research essay and gave me a lot of resources. Also lets you rewrite one paper if you screw up, and gives you one paper to use a week extension on.
I couldn't stand this class. He had a very dry sense of humor and ALWAYS picked on people until he got an answer. Also a very tough grader with strong opinions politically. I loved english before and he made me hate writing. Doesn't feel like an english class and near impossible to get an A.
Great prof - intellectually stimulating & very knowledgable. He plays devil's advocate to help articulate why you believe the way you do. The art of persuasion is a valuable skill. He teaches you to craft your writing so it is worth your audience's investment of time. Approachable, funny & invested in his students. Wish he taught upper classes!!
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is amazing. Not only does he have intriguing hair and glasses but he is hilarious. I loved his lectures and if you follow what he says in class you will do well on papers. He is just picky about grammar and punctuation.
Great prof! I would take any class from him -- wish he taught Philosophy, too - learned more about Phil. from him then I did my Phil. prof. It would be amazing to take upper level comp class from him -- he has an awesome way of communicating & writing. It's fascinating to read his writing. He's a hoot to boot & very wise! Great start to GU!
A woman in orientation had Herrick's class 3 or 4 yrs ago and was excited to hear I was in his class. She was so right about him as he's an awesome professor and even cooler person! He's patient, humble and funny! He opened my eyes to different views but never pushed his views. I will use the skills learned in his class for the rest of my life.
Professor Herrick was an awesome English professor. I would take him again in a heartbeat! He was very helpful when I asked fro extra help and he even let our class fix our paper assignments for a better grade.
The semester is early. He's laid back, passionate about the subject & wants you to learn about putting forth quality writing, but not just writing that is grammatically correct with proper punctuation. He works hard to instill the desire for crafting writing worth reading. A quality hire by GU - must take. Hope he teaches other classes!
Herrick is a great guy! He's one of the best professors/teachers I've ever had. He's fair, he's engaging, and he's understanding. Grading was on the generous side but not to be looked over. He's the right kind of professor; Herrick is easy going, but still gets the job done and really teaches what needs to be taught. I highly recommend.
Herrick is my favorite professor I have ever had. Very clear in lecture, has a great sense of humor, and wants you to pass. Laid back guy, really into what he teaches. I wrote a paper for a magazine outside of class that was 9+ pages, and he went through it thoroughly to make it better. Really awesome guy + teacher. Definitely would take again.
Take Heath! He seriously cares about your grade and he's always enthusiastic! Class can get a little boring sometimes, but as long as you're a decent writer you can get a fairly easy A!
Great teacher, keeps class interesting and not too hard. A few essays but plenty of time given and clear grading
SUPER FUN CLASS!!! Show up and do your papers and youve got it nailed. He expects your writing to improve throughout the semseter so think about that. DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS! He also does take attendance. Will also give edits and advice on papers. No tests, no books, few assigned readings. Take this class.
Professor Herrick is a really great English teacher. He is funny and he relates well with us students. We had a lot of class discussions and I found them enriching. I would definitely take a class taught by him again.
If you're looking for an easy class with minimal work, this is the class for you. Nice guy, super easy class, but you will learn next to nothing. Recommended for stem majors who don't have to take any further English classes.
He is a very knowledgable person, and makes a boring class more intersting. My main complaint would be that he was an unessarily diffucult grader, considering english 101 is usually not very strict. Get help on essays during office hours before you turn them in, this will help zero in on what he wants in the assignment.
Easy class, not much homework just a few essays for the whole semester. Class was mostly based on discussion. Didn't learn too much, just reviewed some grammar rules.
Although his class is often dry and a bit boring, Professor Herrick is very approachable and has clear expectations for assignments. There are only 4 assignments (3 short essays and 1 easy multimodal assignment) that are graded incredibly easily. If you're looking for an easy english 101, Heath is your guy. Also he has a beard the length of Chile.
Awesome professor for English 101. Only a few papers and you get to write them on whatever you want. Lets you revise one essay if you want to. Not the most exciting class, but definitely a good professor.
ENGL 101 with Herrick is a nice class for freshman year. A couple of essays, one or two short articles, and one project. You are allowed to rewrite one essay during the semester and can get one extension during the semester. Overall easy A as long as you show up, participate every once in a while and write quality essays.
If you're looking for an extremely easy class, take this one. It felt like a waste of time, and he would deliberately drag class on the entire class period, even when there was never a reason to stay.
He's a great professor. My only issue would with the content he has to teach in the class itself. Was very basic high school level at best. But for what it was, he was a great professor for it. Will do his best to ensure you do your best.
Herrick is a good teacher. His English 101 class is pretty boring, but that's more due to the core material he has to cover than his teaching itself. He's always very enthusiastic and does his best to make class entertaining. He gives a ton of time to write every paper, so just stay relatively on top of those and you'll be fine.
Professor Herrick will give you feedback on your essays in detail. Most classes would be lectures about grammar and writing styles. If you are not satisfied with the grade he gives you on essays, he gives you the opportunity to revise them (as many as you want) at the end of the semester. He is also calm when giving lectures.
Give Herrick a raise!! Great prof, had him three years ago and I was thinking, man, I need to tell more people about that guy. I've been here four years and haven't had a better prof since
Prof. Herrick is a great choice for english 101! The content of this course is pretty boring and seems unnecessary (especially if you took AP english classes in high school), but he is very enthusiastic and makes lectures more tolerable! You have to write a couple minor papers with a research paper, but he grades pretty easy!
Get ready to sit in a room where he talks grammar to you while reeking of cigarettes. Boring, waste of time class, but easy.
Herrick is a stud of a teacher. Think a combination of Adam Sandler and Robin Williams in "Good Will Hunting". He is hysterical and his lectures are mostly engaging aside from he does Grammar. He even tells you if the day will be boring. A few papers and assignments nothing crazy. One of the best at GU by far! Take the class.
Herrick is a solid choice for ENG101. Classes can be boring sometimes but he's a great guy and tries to make them interesting. You only have to write a few essays and he grades pretty easy and gives good feedback.
I love him! He clearly knows what he's doing and his love for english is evident. There are a few papers (not long at all) and if you ask for feedback you will for sure get a better grade. His grading scale is tough because you need a <95 in order to receive an A. But, he is a fairly easy grader. He is so laid back.
Professor Herrick is a super cool guy. His papers are doable and he gives really good feedback. However, if no participates in class he will cold call on you, so pay attention to his questions he asks. No quizzes, just mostly writing assignments. Only need the textbook a few times, but not all the time. Read when he assigns any kind of reading!
I really liked Prof. Herrick. He is a cool guy and tries to make the content as interesting as possible, even though it can be pretty boring stuff. He is an amazing writer and if you ask for feedback, he will help improve your writing so much. There are only 3 big papers and a few other little assignments. I definitely would recommend!
Heath is a great choice. He gives incredible feedback no matter the grade you got, and tries his best to make class fun. I wish he taught upper divisions writing classes because I would definitely take him again. He is a very neat, hilarious, and caring guy.
Professor Herrick is an amazing person and is very approachable and informal. The problem was a lot of things graded were grades months after you did them and you were unsure where you were in the class. I would say he is a tough grader as well, which was difficult because there were few things to be graded in the class overall.
Heath is a great guy who cares about students success, but lectures were terribly boring & painful to sit through. He cold calls students if no one speaks so be prepared for that. Otherwise only a few writing assignments which he grades very leniently, although it can be weeks later until he finally grades them. Overall a fine choice for writing.
Heath is a legend, he is really funny, does not have a final, and lets you revise one of the like 3 papers from the semester. Since there is not a lot of work in this class, the essays really matter so take your time with them, but the also has in-class peer review sessions before they are due. Great guy, great class, I would take him again
To be honest, this class was pretty boring but fairly easy - however you do have to get above a 95 to get an A. There are not too many essays but they are each a pretty big chunk of your grade. Prof Heath is helpful during office hours where he gives feedback before you can turn in the essay. Overall, Heath is a good choice for any english class
The class is really interesting, and he makes it engaging and enjoyable. Lots of papers however you have plenty of time to complete them, and he gives plenty of time to finalize a draft. Take the class!
Super nice guy, however his lectures are unbelievably boring and long. There's 3 papers and a visual argument, so I didn't think the workload was too bad. Fair and clear grader. Probably the best option for a writing 101 class.
One of my favorite English teachers by far. Great class, would take again. Very thoughtful notes on essays and a pretty light courseload.
He was a super nice guy, does not get grades back to you very quickly so you might not know your grade until the very end. A good option for a writing class, pretty boring but informational
Highly recommend for ENG 101 credit, only 4 papers which are all do able, few discussion posts in between, very passable, lectures are boring but he is energetic and a cool guy. Also takes attendance.
It is an easy writing class and comfortable for international students. Take him!
He's great for core classes. Dont get the handbook for the class. I didn't need it once. All I did in class was shop, play games, and watch tv. I also put very little effort and had ai help me. ended up with a. Heath is a funny guy and I respect him. Does smell like cigs but other than he's a perfect guy for a core class
Professor Herrick is a great professor! He did well to teach the class and show us what would be expected of a higher level English course and allowed us to improve our writing through group revisions. One thing to watch out for is to pay attention to the readings, otherwise great prof!
He is great! Textbook is like unnecessary (don't waste $) but he does refer to it. Attendance is only mandatory if you miss too many classes (more than 6/8). Great class, super easy. Early deadline (on time) and late deadline (a week later) for papers (loved this approach). Lecture heavy, but he is interesting so not boring at all.
Professor Herrick was the best! he was hilarious, showed up to class late and would let us out early. never needed the book once, dont really have much homework other than big papers. attendance not mandatory, take him!
This is a chill class and he likes when students participate. The essays are not too complex and he gives plenty of time to complete them. He gives a TON of feedback. Don't buy the textbook since we basically never used it.
He's a good professor and gives good feedback. At the end of the semester you can redo one essay.
