TOTALLY helpful!!!! YOu can ask her to explain the same thing over and over till you get it like fifty times and shes patient and understanding. Also sometimes has office hours off campus if you need it. Have fun with her, she's totally laid back but a hard grader.
Best English Teacher I have ever had, I used to hate english but her class made me change my mind. So understanding, and willing to help you as much as she can. :)
This is by far the worst english corse and teacher combination I have ever had in my entire lifespan.
I don't know who wrote that cuz Heather is soooo cool. Best english clas, I used to hate this but she encouraged me. HEather you rock!
Heather is such a wonderful, helpful and interesting teacher. She made the best effort to make Univ 101 interesting and she did a good job. There were a lot of assignments. So Dont ever take University 101 freshmens. Take Heather in any other class though she is great!
She's a really fun person, but she is TOUGH. She does like to joke with the students and is laid back, but she's one tough grader and wont let anything slide.
She is funny and smart and loves what she does, you can tell. Plus she is not bad looking for a teacher. Popular class. Get in if you can, she really will make you smile sometimes. Lots of Town hall work and sometimes it feels like its political science instead of english.
Heather is such an awesome teacher, by far the best I have ever had.Her class is somewhat political but the assignments are pretty cool. She also has a good sense of humor.

funny, kind, pretty, sweet!!!
Heather was by far my favorite teacher last semester. She is very helpful, however you have to go to class & participating helps. If you get the chance to take her class, don't miss this opportunity
English is typically the subject I excel most in. Heather's grading is very specific, but, unclear and hard. Her writing requirements are hard to decrypt, but she is a very nice person and challenges you to write (to her standards and strange, unique format) but she is nice and can be fun. She brought us bagels on the first day! But she grades hard
i took her through butte classes, she is strict but rewarding. her assignment are different but her attitude towards writing made most of my class into great writers. overall she is pretty cool.
I can honestly say that this class has changed the way I think about the world. I've gone from being a rather insular person born and raised in Butte County to being extremely curious about traveling. It is more than I could ever have thought I would learn and I found myself enthralled by the topics we read about. I loved the journal assignments.
This teacher kind of shrugs off responsibility at times and does not provide adequate examples for her homework exercises. When she does provide good examples, the assignment was already due. Even though she allows you to redo your assignments, if your source was bad, she expects you to get a new one, so it's not really redoing the assignment as mu
This professor is great! She is funny and keeps your attention during class. She often takes time to get the class interested in special events and issues. The class in not too difficult and is very beneficial. I noticed a significant increase in my writing grades in other classes after due to what I learned in Heather's class.
Tends to ramble.
she has been one of my favorite teachers at chico state! she is very easy going and willing to help you at any time. My writing skills improved so much after being in her class. She is such a nice person as you treat her with respect, Do your homework and writing assignments and you will definitely get an A in this class.
Alot of work, but she is a really great prof. This semester I changed my major after her encouragement.
Heather is by far and amazing teacher. she scared me at first in the beggining of the semester, but overall it was and amazing class. a lot of homework and readings and the final paper is pretty long. but if you go to class, get involved, and actually do the work you should be fine. her class was my best english class ever.
Truly an outstanding teacher, and a lot of fun!
This is an interesting class! The reading is very different from what you might expect in an English class but I learned more in this class than I did in most of my other classes combined and Heather is definitely a really great person, she keeps things moving and light. I liked the journal entries. There is a lot of reading for the class!
Heather was a great teacher and I learned a lot from her. She really helped me open up and become a writer. I never knew that I liked to write until I took her class.
Just lets you write about anything that interested you. she has a bunch of great articles to reflect on. All of them are easy to write about and focus on real world problems. don't be afraid to go off on tangents or criticize the articles or authors. She is really encouraging and wants to write me a letter of recommendation for grad school.
Journal entries are easy, big amount of points on unnecessary assignments. The readings need more thinking into it; lots and lots to read. Unorganized with assignments. She'll give you the assignment and a few words about it but it's basically a repetition.
Heather is just great! I had her about a year ago, but I still remember her as one of my favorite professors. She's very encouraging of students' writing. I feel that she really helped my writing grow. And after that long final paper, I feel like I can tackle any kind of essay! Heather has an awesome personality and is a really chill teacher.
Heather is a gem. I've never had a professor quite like her. My experience as a freshman during my first semester with her, set the tone for my success through college. I have yet to receive less than an A on any essay since taking her class! She is an AMAZING teacher, and awesome woman. I owe so much of my knowledge and creativity to Heather!
amazing and helpful!
Definitely expects a lot from each student but she is so helpful and really wants each student to do well. Hard work but she is a pretty lenient grader.
Take this class, you won't regret it. I took it 3.5 years ago and I went from being someone who hates writing to being a confident writer mostly due to her encouragement. It is a lot of work but she is worth it.
Heather is a nice person and can be very personable, sometimes to much so. She gives journal entries that are often unclear in what they want but she is willing to help. Although be warned some of the reading is hard.
The class requires allot of time and patience. You will have to reread much of the articles she assigns. You have to be extremely dedicated to attending her class, it can be a bit dry, but she will have a quiz almost every class session. You will write a paper just about once a week, and the final is a huge paper. The class requires focus.
Take her! She was actually really interesting! she was very funny, a bit cynical but she always had great stories to tell. Sometimes the reading seemed overwhelming.attendance is not mandatory but she does give quizzes on readings. Big paper at the end, but she holds your hand through it.
Great teacher! She's very helpful and keeps the class interesting. The class is a lot of work but she explains, thoroughly, everything required to get a good grade. She loves when you visit her in office hours. Attendance is almost mandatory because there's a quiz almost every class meeting. Interesting writing assignments though!
She is AMAZING! I improved so much as a writer because she makes you work on different methods and techniques in your writing. She explains all assignments thoroughly, so you are clear in what she is looking for an in assignment. The things you learn in her class you can use in other classes too! Take her for sure!
One of the most amazing people you will ever meet. Kind and brilliant. She forces you to expand your mind. Yes the writing assignments are long but she walks you through it. I had to fight to stay in this class and i am so happy i did. You would be lucky to have her as a professor. Thank you Heather!
She has an excuse for literally EVERYTHING! She is never able to answer your questions, and when she does she doesn't answer it specifically. She is so unorganized and it's as if she is making the class up as she goes. You show up to a completely random activity of group "therapy" where you sit in a circle and talk with classmates: be real.
I have her for Honors Beauty at Chico. Mostly she focuses on poetry and literature for things of beauty when there's a lot more to it. If you don't like hippy type people, you wont like her. Honestly my least favorite professor this semester and I don't like 4 out of my 5. Her class really feels pointless to attend so I often skip.
She's awful! Seriously, do not take her class. She assigns so much more work than other english professors. Definitely get someone else.
Ha, funny to read these comments. Heather makes you work, yes. Sometimes it is a lot of reading. But seriously it has helped me learn to write and think. Class discussions are interesting. Worth it!
Not that hard, has tests on readings but easily bs-able. first english class that i don't hate, is somewhat relevant to today. Slightly obsessed with poetry.
This is a sort of old-school teacher who challenges you to your maximum potential. She is fun in spirit, but the course is very demanding. You will read a lot (one or two articles for every class), and write a lot, some of which is handwritten in a journal. Old School! But she is there for you and gives good feedback. Defintite recommend.
Wonderful teacher, pushes you hard and expects a lot of you but will definable make it worth your while fun in the long run. My writing has improved so much because of her. Very creative mind, old school thinking but is extremely helpful and loves to see students in her office( she always has cookies).
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! Quizzes practically every class and a ton of boring readings. Such a hippie obsessed with poetry, honestly didn't help me improve at all. She requires you to go to office hours a few times which sucks and her voice is really annoying to listen to for three hours a week. Awful teacher.
First English class I had to earn a grade in. Memorable and interesting professor.
Please don't take this class. If you are not a English literature enthusiast you will hate it. Take another section to complete the English 130 requirement. She will make you write poems on pointless things. Also, she makes the final paper much more difficult than the other sections.
This is a really differnet class than any others I have had. She is a unique sort of person. There is a lot of reading but most of it was interesting. Heather challenges you to think about your own life and society as a whole. Really the only english class I have not felt was busywork.
Heather was an amazing professor! She really wants her students to do well and will help them in any way she can. Stay on top of the work and you'll be fine!
This class is a lot of work. A minimum of 1 hour readings for every class. 4 major assignments and the last one is a 12-16 page research paper. You will struggle, but if you take advantage of her office hours and really see what she's looking for you'll do fine. An A is extremely hard to earn. Don't expect to slack and still earn an A.
I see that some people dislike her, but those people are slackers who don't care about the class. Heather is the smartest and coolest teacher I've met so far as a college student. She will never let you down so don't let her down either, TRY! her class is only hard if you dont comply.Helpful, funny woman who gives ACTUALLY useful assignments
Anyone who has really taken the chance to get to know Heather knows that she is so caring and admirably smart and clever. She belongs with students who care about learning and growing, and if you let her she will make a very sweet impact on your life. Love this teacher, put in the work that's needed and you'll learn valuable skills from her!
Heather is tough. She expects so much from you and later in the year when you want to fix a mistake she will say it's too late and says no. She is crazy about poetry, so if you like poetry then definitely consider taking her class, if not, try to choose another professor.
She is very helpful only if you go to her office hours. Her project descriptions are so convoluted that she complains to our class how she's always swamped by emails. She didn't say what she expected from our quickwrites and quizzes so we all got Fs. She assigns opinion-based homework but grades you harshly when your opinions are wrong.
I'm sure I would really like her class if I were an english major. I wouldn't mind the hours of homework every day, hundreds of pages of reading, and I could even get past how disorganized she is. However, I'm taking her class for GE, and such a huge workload ruins what would otherwise be an interesting class.
Heather's class was one of the most challenging classes in my college career, and yet I enjoyed every minute of it. It challenged me, which in turn has made me a more thoughtful and purposeful writer. Her assignments make you apply and think and she is so helpful and encouraging. I adore her and think she is an amazing teacher.
While it is true that there is a lot of reading (we read ten juvy books for the class), it was really worthwhile. I don't even plan to go into child development but I learned a ton. Some of the writing assignments are personal narrative and creative. She is funny and smart. Go to office hours, and she will read your drafts.
I have had two Honors class with Heather in 2015-2016 & both were exceptional. I didn't have her in my Beauty small group, but did for Virtue. Loved every minute. She's difficult, but fully prepared you for the work you need to do. Love her. Favorite teacher at Chico State. Funny, witty, respected by students, but she does expect quite a bit!
Heather's Honors Beauty class seemed like a great choice, but the entire class is from a textbook she compiled together herself. They are very unorganized and don't give direction through the course. Be prepared for reading uninteresting books! Your work is graded different depending on which prof. you are in a small group with.
While the class itself was awful (confusing assignments & due dates, opinion based grading, boring readings, pointless outside of class events, etc), Heather was a great teacher. I'm taking her again in hopes that her other class(es) are different because I enjoyed her as a person. I definitely would not recommend the class, but Heather is great.
I wouldn't recommend this class or Heather to anyone. I was enrolled in this for a GE. We had to read/purchase over 6 novels, all of which were read in short amount of time. Quizzes make up most of your grade and are very specific. She can miss class but you can't.m! Directions are very unclear and she makes a big deal when you ask her to clarify
Had Heather twice, for HNRS201 and HNRS203. She speaks heavily about her own political views and alienates you if you do not agree. Teaches her own opinion and grades you harshly if you do not agree. LOTS of readings, some interesting and some not. In 201 your grade will depend on who your small group is because writing expectations vary the 3.
Heather really pushes you to become a good writer, which is an incredibly useful thing. Most importantly though she's passionate about the subject so she keeps you engaged. Your gonna learn about some weird stuff but it's pretty interesting and it helps a lot that she's really interested in the topic.
I am graduating this year and I have to say, this has been my FAVORITE TEACHER ever. I wish I had taken this class years ago. I have not worked so hard or thought so hard in my entire time at Chico. Don't miss this class, especially if you are going to be a teacher!
One of my favorite professors! Class is difficult at times and she pushes you, but she makes it enjoyable with stories. Lots of readings and tests have a good amount of material. The more you participate the easier the class. Definitely would take another of her classes.
Heather is TOUGH- she tells you how it is. If your writing is tragic, she'll make it clear what you need to fix. Even though she was difficult, she really helped me to become a better writer. She may seem mean in class, but if you go to her office hours for help she is more than willing to assist and is very sweet. It was tough but to me, worth it.
I felt I really excelled in this class only because of my AP English classes in high school. Class was pretty difficult in terms of understanding the reading material, as some pieces were tough. Heather is a tough grader and can seem mean in class, however she is very knowledgeable and does things to truly benefit the student. TOUGH love here
She is a very sweet lady. Obviously well-educated. She is understanding. However, she is a tough grader, give your best effort. Go to her office hours a few days before the important papers are due.
I love heather. I took this class for GE and now she got me taking honors classes with her. Her teaching style can be all over the place but it's so easy to get entranced in her lectures. I wish she would be more specific about grading requirements and tests. She is hilarious and I currently have a long list of my favorite quotes from her :)
Heather is a wonderful human being. You will struggle to find a professor that cares half as much as this woman does about her students! One of the friendliest professors I've ever had. If you get the opportunity to take a course with her take it! She is so knowledgeable and very talented.
Good luck finding out what the homework is. She completely disregarded the syllabus by week 11. Unclear, unresponsive, disorganized. I love writing, but the amount of unclear work she expects is insane. I am literally an English major, and the reading was too much.
Ready to read 7 novels and a bunch of articles in one semester take Heather! Want to feel like you don't know how to write take Heather! Want complete anarchy in a class setting take Heather! She seems like a nice person but it's ludicrous to have no structure to a class and then grade the way she does. AVOID IF POSSIBLE.
Heather is pretty average. This class fills my International minor and there isn't many options outside of her class. So if you have to take this class be warned the class set up is very strange.
Heather is not organized! She changed the entire syllabus by week 3. Multiple times I have had to email her and ask what the homework was because it would be due within 24 hours and she would reply and say she keeps forgetting and shell do it soon. Absolutely unacceptable. Its not my job as a student to remind the teacher to post homework.
Heather has always been so caring in my interactions with her, and all of her other students that I have met have felt the same. She is a truly wonderful person and she wants you to succeed. You have to put in effort, like any class, but she has a lot to teach you if you want to learn. I would definitely take another class from her.
I took this humanities course unenthusiastically at first and to fulfill a requirement last spring. I was surprisingly delighted by the content taught so passionately by the professor. She drew me into the literature we covered, and I grew to look forward to the class even as it moved to Zoom. I would not hesitate to take a course from her again.
Heather is the kind of professor who makes you want to be better. She sets you up for great successes in her classes and you will learn a lot from her. She is caring, deeply passionate about her subject, and she is one of the funniest professors you will ever have. Do yourself a favor and take a class with Heather. You will love it!
Taking this class with Heather was wonderful. Heather is a wonderful professor who has so much passion. If you take a class with her, you will find yourself caring deeply about anything that she lectures on. She is that good. I recommend classes with Heather to anyone who would like to take a fun class where they will learn a lot.
Absolutely stupendous, saw that I wasnt engaging in class and went out of her way to help me through my social anxiety so I could participate properly. She is not an easy teacher but will make you better . Like a firm coach that pushes you harder because they believe you arent performing at your peak potential. The third best teacher Ive had
Heather is the only professor I've had that makes me feel like I worked for the grade I earned. She gives wonderful feedback that allows for you to better your writing. Chico State is so lucky to have someone as thoughtful as Heather.
Throughout my college career, Heather has been incredibly insightful and caring. She will give you honest feedback because she genuinely wants you to develop into your full potential as a student. She will hold you to a higher standard than most because she cares. Taking a class with Heather will make you a better student and thinker. 10/10.
I registered for this summer class not sure what to expect, but I am so glad that I took it! I learned so much from Heather. Taking a class from Heather is something that every student should do if given the chance!
This class with Heather inspired me to become a Humanities Minor. Her intelligence and enthusiasm was so contagious, I couldn't help but want to pursue more classes like this. If you are looking for a class that will challenge and engage you, take a class with Heather!
Heather is a phenomenal professor. Also one of the hardest professors you'll take in a humanities. Her goal is to make you improve, not give you an easy A. She's the 'tough love' kind of teacher. But she also truly cares about you. She also hilarious If you want to ACTUALLY BECOME A BETTER ACADEMIC deep thinker, and skilled scholar take her class.
Horrible. The final exam was 4 essays and 20 multiple choice and you only get 2 hours to take it. She is horrible. I still got an A but was so frustrated the entire time. She doesnt stick the the schedule and is such a hard grader. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER. Im a senior and this was the worst class Ive ever taken.
She clearly doesn't read her emails thoroughly & will give you failing grades on assignments that she clearly messed up. She makes many excuses throughout the semester & cancels the limited meetings that she has. Just do all the extra credit & you will proabably finish w/ better than 100%
Heather is amazing. She's excited to teach and will get you excited to learn. She tries to relate to and engage with her students. Super sweet professor. Doesn't expect a lot. Very approachable and loves to talk to students. Has some very interesting PowerPoint presentations. Knows her stuff for sure and is excited to share what she knows.
If you're serious about the course material, Heather is definitely for you! If you are taking this as a GE class, I would weigh my options carefully. There is a lot of reading, which is heavily represented in tests, but don't worry! Essays are another big part of the grade, where test scores were lacking, my essay scores made up for it.
At the end of class, she assigns a 5 page essay & a final exam consisting of multiple choice & short answers AND 2 essay questions. You will not know your grade until the class ends. She cancels class & gives excuses for not posting submission links. You're basically left in the dust, bc she won't respond to emails. Don't take this class, run!
Gives five assignments all semester, two which are pop quizzes. You will end the semester with only about 80 points in the gradebook. Going into finals week, only 30 of those 80 points are graded. Half the class is failing from pop quiz. With this professor, there is only one correct answer.... and no not on multiple choice tests, but in essays. GL
(4 week summer corse)Very nice and sweet lady but Never answers emails. Guajes you read NO LIE 7, 30 pagePDfs. Even made us read a book in a week and watch a whole season of a show in a week. Takes LONG time to grade. Her comments dont help. Dont really explain things well etc maybe she is better in a longer class tho bc she was nice.
She's very tough and strict
She is a kind and funny professor but she assigns lots of essay work and sometimes gives feedback that is not always helpful.
Class was always enjoyable and Heather made it fun. She loves and respects her students and she loves her job and the material she teaches. There was a lot of reading but most of it was good and she was there to help you through it. I really enjoyed this class and hope I can take another with her later on.
This was probably the most interesting class I have ever had in my life. It was about Memory and Forgetting. Every reading was weird and cool, like stuff I would never read about or even know about. I loved the journal writing every morning. She gave us long notes every time we turned something in. I didn't mind the reading amount that much.
This class was reading intensive but the entire class period was a discussion on the readings with a quiz a couple times a semester. The writings were simple and she gave amazing feedback to make students better writers. I really loved our class discussions because of how engaging they all were. I look forward to having her in future classes.
Every class I've had with Heather has been great. She's one of the most unique professors I've had, which I think shocks some students. Her classes aren't going to be a GE you can just write off, but if you're putting in the effort and engagement, it can be such a fulfilling learning experience. Seriously the best professor I've had at Chico State!
I hated this teacher, assigns lots of reading and doesn't work well with accommodations even from accessibility resources.
how does she have such a great score on this website? she grades unfairly, boring lectures, and is constantly showing us videos that have no meaning to the class. obviously has favorites too
very biased teacher and not very forgiving. only people who like her are radical liberals and feminists. she's is just not a great person
Heather was terrible! The lectures were boring, the material was outdated, and her teaching style was unorganized and unclear. Heather seemed uninterested in teaching and was often late to class. Even the office hours were unhelpful and lacked any useful advice. Avoid this her at all costs!
I found Professor Altfeld to be incredible at what she does and a interesting lecturer. She provides great feedback and pushes students out of their shells. I find that Heather wants students to be engaged so I would make sure to do the reading. She may be a bit disorganized at times, but she has a big heart and even much more intellect.
Good luck if you take this class
Heather is one of the most interesting professors I have had at Chico State. Even though she is very thoughtful, she is very unorganized. We never had clear due dates and this was for our honors capstone course. Her grading is confusing and I know a lot of my peers struggled too. Overall, she is fascinating but be aware before you sign up.
rambled about shrooms and their "properties" and tried to insert it into the coursework. she cancelled classes MINUTES before class which was super inconvenient and was extremely picky with grades. super disorganized as well and always changed the coursework and dates, never clearly specified midterm material, and discussions were irrelevant. 0/10.
Her explanations were confusing, and he rarely offered help or feedback. The classroom atmosphere was tense and unwelcoming, making it difficult to learn. She grades very unfairly too.
If you are a creative and artsy person who doesn't mind doing assignments on a whim, then take Heather's class!!! She's very passionate, gives amazing feedback on writing, and wants students who are interested and engaged. However, if you are someone who needs structure and consistency, then this may not be the class for you. Pretty disorganized :/
Heather is very creative however, after a year with her, I have learned everything is by her rules. We were told about our presentation a week before it was due and we often had little idea of what was going on. There is a huge lack of communication. She is an inspiring writer but it is an emotional roller coaster to go through this class.
Heather runs a tough class, but engaging with her teaching style pays off. The material is challenging, but using resources like Unstuckstudy helped me prepare effectively. Overall, a rewarding experience if you're willing to put in the work.
Heather's teaching style will work for you if you are a curious person who can find interest in the material. Talk to her in office hours and she will give you wonderful feedback.
Heather was an awesome professor. At first, the amount of reading required was kind of intimidating, but as long as you do it and understand the material, you're good. She is very strict about the use of AI, and has her own way of delivering the material, but this was an online course so it was A LOT of reading. I'd take her class again.
In all of my academic career, this is the worst class and professor I have had. The amount of workload and reading done in this class is so unnecessary and way too much. On top of that, her instructions and course layout are so confusing, which makes tackling the workload harder than it needs to be.
I would avoid this class with her especially. There is so much reading and work. She is almost impossible to reach if you email her about a question. It is also very clear that she is unorganized with her class and directions for assignments are extremely unclear and confusing. I'm not sure how she has a decent score on here.
I normally take bad reviews on here with a grain of salt because sometimes it's people who have failed and are upset. They are not wrong about this teacher and this class. Word to the wise, take this class with somebody else.
Her instructions to assignments or exam prompts rarely make sense and her grading is extremely hard which makes for a highly frustrating situation. It is also very apparent how unorganized she is. She is constantly going off topic and talking about random or inappropriate content with other students making the class feel like a joke.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I wanted so badly to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I wish I had listened to the other reviews. She is beyond disorganized and it will ultimately affect how much you know about the material. Way too much reading. Handwritten notes take hours. Last minute projects, barely follows schedule. Oral exams are "conversational"... not really.
