Great teacher. Really cares about students. I had to study my butt off, but I got an "A" so anyone with half a brain and a good attitude can. Make sure you read the material and do the work before class time. You will appreciate this class if you are a pre-med or pre-dent student.
I Agree with the earlier comment. I've done great in the class so far. Don't mouth off and think about your questions before you ask them and you'll be fine.
I like this class/Professor. However, for each chapter, she requires a (somewhat) extensive outline. This is a big pain if you are already familiar with the material. I.E. I took Biol 1010 and some of this stuff is review for me. It is so boring to write outlines of already learned materials.
this teacher and class is off the hizzo. She uses powerpoint which makes it easrier in some way to understand this subject
She tried to make sure people know what they needed to know, but her office hours were short and I couldn't talk to her during that time.
She is a good teacher who cares about her students. Her tests are very hard, but she does grade on a curve. I liked her teaching style, and she is clear and doesnt get off the subject very often.
Awesome teacher. Dr Ashworth is very smart and her lectures are interesting. Some trick questions on exams, so make sure you really know your stuff! I would definitely take a class from her again, she's great =)
I took this class last semester and she made in unbearable! Not only does she go off on random tangents throughout lecture, but she expects to take the tiniest detail from those random tangents and take the hardest test you'll ever take (besides the MCAT and DAT!) I wouldn't recommend her.
She makes you do outlines which actually are pretty helpful, but annoying.
I think Dr. Ashworth is a dang good teacher. She explains things very well. Her tests are hard, but if you study and put time into the class like you should be, then you will do fine.
Dr. Ashworth does a great job explaining things, but definitely not willing. She makes you feel like you are wasteing her time and can tend to make you feel like a bother when you ask questions. Her lectures are good, but her tests are terrible. If you do well with story problem type questions you will do wonderful.
As you can tell from the previous comments, she is very inconsistent, which is what makes her such a difficult teacher. She is moody and it shows in her lectures and office visits. She does make you feel like you are wasting her time and like you should figure things out on your own and not ask her for help. Overall I would not recommend her.
Dr. Ashworth is a very good instructor. All her notes are on PowerPoint presentation and she is extremely thorough in her explainations. Her exams are VERY tough, but they are fair and passable. She will answer questions pertinant to the material and doesn't put up with B.S. in her classroom. Chapter summaries are tedious but a huge help!
Terrible, she expects you to write these huge outlines for every chapter and they have to be super detailed and so you spend all of you time making sure that you are a perfect outline and it takes away from studying for the test or any other class. She do
Ashworth is awesome!! TAKE HER!
She is a great teacher, but the class is a doozie. Her tests are especially hard.
This teacher was the worst! She was not helpful, and if you asked her a question, she would make you feel stupid. I took it online and it was the worst class. She expects you to treat it like an upper division class when it is only a gen.ed. The tests were so hard that the averages were never above a 70. Dont take this class from her!!!!!!
She is a nice teacher, but her tests and quizzes are incredibly hard. It's like she wants students to do bad, even though she says otherwise. She's a good teacher, just be prepared for spending every free minutes studying for this class.
I took this class from her online. IT SUCKED. She wasn't helpful, her tests were outrageous. With the work load she gives you would think she expects you to be taking this class and this class only. I found her standards rediculus for a gen ed requirement. The average score on her last test was a 62%. Oh and forget extra credit.
She is the worst teacher ever!!!!! She acts like she teaches medical school. Don't expect to understand or remember one thing because she has a major attitude that she is smarter than you and she won't let just anyone pass because they may work on her someday when she is old, wrinkled, and pooping her pants!
Wow i think she actually wants you to fail the class. Her tests are unclear and she mispells stuff on them. Says she will do extra credit...nope its a lie. And she really wasnt helpful at all. She was kind of arrogant too. If youre an A student dont expect one. And if you cant afford a low grade and need to take this class just go to BYU.
The teacher's perpose to make you think that you are stupid and she is smartest person on Earth.
She is likeable enough if you can like someone while her class is killing you. Whatever you do DON"T ever admit to not reading the assigned material. She will at some point go on a tangent and kick everyone out of class who hasn't done the reading.
She is a hard teacher. Sometimes quite entertaining. Tests are hard also. If she has made an error or doesn't know something, she willingly admits it. If you ask for help, she will do all she can. I enjoyed the class. If you get an "A" you certainly earned it!
I've never worked so hard in a class and done so badly! Take it from BYU.
What other teacher will type out all her notes and offer them to the students???? She was great, she always helped when needed, and I never read, rarely studied(just her notes) and nearly aced every test! I learned quite a bit and highly recommend her!
Her lecutures were awesome. I learned a lot just from going to class. Her tests are very difficult, but doable. I went to her office after each test and went through all the questions, it helped me get used to her style of questions, and helped me see how I could approach her test more effectively. Work hard and you will do fine.
It's an intro course and she thinks that it's an upper division! The book was easy to read, the homework was okay, but the tests made NO sence whatsoever! She would abbreviate some terms that were not like that in the book and many of the questions were totally out from left field. The amount of time spend is rediculous for a ge class! DON'T TAKE!
Her lecture material for physiology did not correspond to the text at all. She gives you a power point outline of her lectures, but some of the material is incorrect. She miss-spells things are on her tests and her questions are often poorly written. I felt like I was taking Physiology According to Ashworth. DON'T take her class!
This is by far one of my favorite professors ever. Lots of fun, very helpful and fair. She is very clear about what is important to know, and actually teaches USEFUL INFORMATION. Just pay attention and do what she says and you should be fine. Most importantly: DO WHAT SHE SAYS. She doesn't lie about what she's going to do!
She means well, but if you want to get an A and are taking a full load plus going to work full time or even part time, I would suggest not taking her. She is very tough and expects a lot out of her students. You are always studying, and it doesn't seem like anything comes out of it. She has a nice personality.
Ashworth is a great teacher. She cares about students understanding Physiology and is willing to work with students on passing her class. She is one of the best teachers I have had and I would recommend her to anyone. Her lectures are very interesting and applicable.
She is incrediblly hard. STUDY her notes STUDY the text. STUDY your lecture notes. Tape her lectures and STUDY them. Talk to her privately. STUDY STUDY STUDY She does not give A's or B's I studied 3-6 hours a day I could not get above 78% on anything. She does not use the text she has her own agenda. She tests far above the level of the text.
I took this class online & she will not help you at all in this class, she is bad at contacting students & has a lot of mistakes in her quizes & tests that make the questions hard to understand.
Dr. Ashworth's class is insanely hard. Her tests are full of trick questions and questions not seen in lecture or reading. She is scatterbrained and inpatient with students who are brave enough to say they do not understand. If you take this class get used the phrases, "If you know anything about..."and "you have to know..." DO NOT TAKE!!
I would never have taken this class if I had known what it would be like. Not only are her tests way too hard but it seems like she doesn't really know biology. She told our class that birds are mammals!
g8 teacher! i took her in a block; she makes it relatable/understandable... i luvd her sense of humor & how she fits bio into life- I HATE BIO/SCIENCE, & she made it bearable! U need the book, only gives u 1 assignment w/ quizzes here & there; 4 tests/a final & u drop lowest test score + always xtra points! luv her! & to be honest, I'm a slacker
Her class is soooooo HARD!!!!!! I took it online and it was impossible to get a good grade on anything!!!! She never emails you back and her test are so dang hard!!! I would not recommend her at all!!!!
She made physiology really fun and interesting. She was always willing to help if you visited her in the office. The only thing I didn't like was the soap boxes she went off on. She spent half of every class period talking about current issues of the world. She liked to lecture us on what we should do with our lives.
Took the online class BIO1010. Wow! what a drag. Let's just say out of a five class semester, this is the only class I wont be getting an A. Assignments pop up all over the place, assignments were lost, no credit, tests are from another world, if you have to take it, GOOD LUCK!!
This teacher is horrible!! She is not helpful at all!!!! She has TA's that talk to you and answer your questions. Half the time they didnt know the answer to my questions so they told me to email Dr. Ashworth. But more than half the time she would not reply and was not helpful at all!!! Worst teacher I have had so far. The class is HARD!!!!!
WORST EVER! At the beginning of the semester she gave a whole spill about always being willing to help not so at all! Sat outside her office for 45 minutes waiting to talk to her while she sat and talked with another student about her mission and she knew I was waiting! HORRIBLE! Hard class, she does not work with you at all!! Dont take from her!!!
I am taking the class because I have to for credit. The way it is taught, I feel like it is my major! I want a basic understanding and appreciation for Biology. I walk away frustrated and feeling belittled with how little I actually am getting out of the class. Very discouraging.
She doesnt test on anything you learn so it is really hard to study for tests.
She is an amazing teacher! everything she goes over in class is on the test. Also she provides you with typed notes. If you follow the notes and come to class you will do great. I bought a voice recorder and just listen to her lectures. it has done miracles for me!!! this is a hard class so make sure to dedicate lots of time
She is a tough professor. She really knows the subject. This class was fun but hard. She profides you with her notes which help a ton. This class requires alot of time.
Professor has two people to help her grade...to give you an idea of how much work she assigns. I was enrolled in her online course and was investing 15 hours per chapter. Quizzes had questions that weren't covered in the book or lectures. Whenever you write a definition to a term it is considered plagerism. Ridiculous.
It's a tough course. There is a LOT of work each chapter, and you really need to understand rather than memorize in order to succeed. If she didn't give me so much work to do each chapter, I really wouldn't understand what I was being taught, so it was beneficial. It's tough, take this during a semester when you have a light load.
Come on people, this class is not hard at all. If you think it was hard, take a real class like anatomy, or physiology. This is college, not high school. I took this class last semester, so easy. Do the assignments and a little studying and you will do well on the tests. She does not try to trick you on the tests, so consider yourself lucky.
I took her online course and felt that the homework that was given was necessary, but you should know or more to the point memorize your syllabus. If you want to keep your grades up.
I had to attend every class because of pop quizzes, study for probably 8+ hours a week and her tests were very hard. She's a great teacher, but too smart to teach general biology. You have to work really hard at this class to get an A. Most my class (probably more than 40 people) agree, she's too difficult. Take diff. bio if you want an easy A.
Not an easy A, if that's what you're looking for. She lectured from a powerpoint every class which can be found online, she has pop quizzes once a week/after every chapter, her tests are harder than the study guides--pretty much you have to devote all of your free time to bio if you want to do well
ONLINE, Tons of work
She made weird arguements and talked about her personal opinion as if it were factual. When one student questioned her opinion, she got irritated and gave up. Really, really, do not take any classes from this lady. She's crazy. Why would a Biology professor play a video about teen sex for 1010? Not a good class for people who don't LOVE Biology.
Extremely difficult teacher
This woman is crazy hard. She gives way to much work. The work she assigns makes you explain things to a level that should not be involved in a 1010 class. This teacher has truly turned me against anything and everything Biology. I hate it now. Nothing she teaches is practical Biology.
Physiology is a very hard class, but Dr Ashworth was very willing to help and WANTED all her students to do well. It was a ton of studying, but she was a great teacher and made it doable! She throws in a sweet curve too :)
This is a pretty hard class. If you are going to take it, take honors because it is not that much more work and it spreads out the points more so that you can get a good grade. Dr Ashworth is willing to help and cares about her students. She also curves her test which helps
Extremely difficult class, material is easy but her explanation of the material is akin to a child rambling. Her tests are written in fragmented sentences and her books are full of errors.
How did this woman get a doctorate degree? she writes study guides that are full of errors. Her tests have double and triple negatives in them. You can earn an A, however, you have to put up with a lot of BS in her tests.
For an Essentials of Biology class (Intro level), the class is way to difficult. The test are misleading and you only see the grade you made; no insight to the missed questions or the correct answers. Dr. Ashworth does grade on a curve but other than that, she is not forgiving on missed dates for assignments (not even by one day). She is too tough.
This class is extremely hard. Her final is a JOKE. 100 questions on clinical evaluations and all you get to answer is 1. Increase 2. Decrease 3. Stay the same. Take this class from anyone else.
This class requires hours of tedious work that will not get you anywhere in life. I had more assignments in this class than all 4 of my other classes combined! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! I'm only half way through and killing myself for nothing! Her tests are full of weird crap she never teaches you about.
This class is better taken anywhere else. It requires more than any upper level course that I have taken. I think that Darwin's law of survival of the fittest is on display. A bit ridiculous considering most 1010 students are not Biology bound. The assignments are graded with unbelievable subjectivity and personal discretion. Do not take!
Most students taking the class are A students. Less than ten percent will get an A out of the class. Teaching style is lacking, it is like she is teaching a review to Medical graduates. The Final Average is 50-55%, 70-76% for all her tests. No curves here, just extra points(not helpful). Tests will equal your grade. Take from someone else!
She teaches the 1010 class as if everyone is going on to med school. This class was a general for me, to this day I spent more time studying and doing homework for this class than any other class since or before, and I will never use the info in my career or otherwise. If you just need a general take it from someone else, anyone else, trust me.
She is a super nice lady, but is definitely different. Her tests are difficult and she doesn't curve. She does have a study guide but even if you take the time to go through it, you'll still get a less than satisfactory grade on your test, she's THAT hard. If you have the chance, take it from Woods or Bayer. At least they curve!
Dr. Ashworth explains her class accurately at the beginning of the semester. It's HARD. you MUST learn a lot by yourself. she says she cares that you understand the material but doesn't mean it. Plus she dresses weird.
Terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great teacher!!! She truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. However, that doesn't mean that you don't have to work hard. Go to class, read the material, do the study guide, study for a billion hours and you'll get a great grade.
Terrible teacher, she thinks you cheat with you're work. Don't take her class!
Nice and very helpful and is very clear what is going to be on the quizzes and tests.
Teacher explains that class will be hard at the beginning of the semester and is willing to work with students. I have had more than one experience with her though that makes me think that if someone is doing well in her class, she thinks they are cheating.
Online. 16: chapters, homework, quizzes, short answers, considers short answers plagiarism if each not cited. Paranoid about cheating, can't see exam results without appt. Office hours < 2 hours Mon & Wed. Study guide = useless, her quote, "The review sheet is not meant to be the focus of your study, but it should guide you as you study." Terrible.
Online class. VERY difficult. Tons of homework. Study guides were not helpful and you could spend hours filling them out. She was willing to meet with me individually and that helped. This class is way too hard for a 1010 and this is a general ed requirement so everyone has to take it.
She changed her whole teaching method this year compared to previous years and IT HAS WORKED! She is very willing to help you. yes you will need the book and other materials and is somewhat time consuming but so worth it. I have learned so much from her. I highly recommend her to any student who wants to learn. She is easy to pass, just do the work
She is very strict and not very helpful to say the least. In class she makes us do these packets like we are in high school but when it comes to tests they are very difficult and very hard to study for. The main problem is that the tests don't go along with any information we learn in class. I wish she had lectured more instead of put us in groups.
Hard! Packets & group work = 90% of the class; but none of its on the test. Tests are WAY different from class work. She has good intentions, but can be condescending and usually pawns questions off on her TAs. Avg 10+ hrs homework per week. She grades on a small curve based on overall test scores. The final was the only easy part the class.
Really, I feel that she does not deserve some of these comments that people have posted on here. She is a nice person, but her class is so disorganized, and the way she teaches does not work with me. Its watch videos and read out of class, then do packets in class. Tests are a struggle. High School again? She is a nice person though.
One of the hardest instructors for me. Too much busy work that I didn't feel helped me prepare for the exams. Felt like she didn't care about helping me when I went to her office to clarify things. She was nice enough to answer but kept typing away on her computer like I wasn't there. Retaking with Bracken now and what a difference so far!
Class is very helpful. She will help explain things in ways that make you derive the answer and think. There are many assignments, reading and lecture quizzes via mastering. POGIL packets every class as attendance. You will spend a lot on her materials for a general ed class. The tests will surprise you how easy it is. Just make out of class effprt
Ashworth is a very good teacher, and makes it clear on how to do well in her class. You can purchase an outline for her notes at the bookstore, and she also made a study-guide book which is an excellent prep for her tests. However, this class is still hard. Expect to study a lot and the book is a must-have.
She explains things well but she doesn't lecture much. Mostly you'll be doing packets with a set group every class. Tests are HARD. I would study for my tests 2 weeks in advance and would still be blind sided. Everything you need is in the textbook. READ! Online homework every couple of days. I would take again.
It was a tough class. The teacher cared though and wanted to help in any way she could. Not very clear on what to study for tests.
This class was very group heavy, she doesn't like to lecture a lot which I liked. She is silly and can treat you like a child at times. I thought the content was difficult, but her teaching method helped me pass
she wasn't very helpful. did everything yourself.
Her group work is very pointless. She gives you these packets to do in a group, but doesn't define the terms, and then everyone in the class will get a bad grade. She never lectures so you never know what to study for on the tests. The syllabus worksheet she gives you at the beginning of the semester makes you feel like a second grader. Terrible
It can be difficult, of course. But you're not alone, everyone else has to do it too. Listen, take notes, watch online videos, go to test review sessions. The help is there. Take advantage of it. Don't be lame like others who've given poor reviews. She's really chill and smart. Lots of group work-which isn't as awful as you think.
Good and organized class. You do lots of homework and quizzes but it really prepares you for your final exam which was way easier than the tests. Group work is not as productive but keeps you busy.a
Ashworth uses Pogil packets for most of the time, but she has you work in groups for every packet, so if you like group work, you'll love the class. The tests take questions from the Learning Outcomes. AND she totally cares about her students - I learned how to actually survive college in her class and would definitely recommend her as a freshman.
Overall, I survived the class! Science has not always been my strong point, but I did have to work hard in this class. If you work hard, you will get the grade. I have never been a fan of POGIL packets and this class is revolved around them. You work in groups and I questioned if I was learning anything from the packets. Do the Learning Outcomes!
Dr Ashworth has a style of teaching that I love. She doesn't like to lecture. She gives a brief overview of the material, then we do POGIL packets as groups. The packets, along with collective group thinking help us learn, and we remember the material easier. She guides us in the right direction instead of just lecturing. Tests are ok if you study.
Dr. Ashworth, or Coach as she likes to be called, is one of the best teachers I've had. I'm no good at science or math but the way that she helped us learn, I passed the class with an A. She lectures for tops maybe 15 minutes and then in groups you work on worksheets to help you master the material. This class is well worth your time. Work hard!
Pretty much everyday in class there was almost no lecture, you do the pogil packet assignments with a group of people. Those are helpful for the tests and the TA's and Professor Ashworth walk around the room helping groups and answering questions. She is hilarious and her lectures are very put together and easy to follow. Really good class.
I loved taking coaches class. She is very intimidating but you grow to love and respect her. she puts you in groups and gives you packets to work on everyday. You learn a lot more by doing that than lectures. If you have a bad group then youre kinda screwed. But overall, loved taking this class and getting to know coach
While Prof Ashworth is very kind , she does not prepare you in the slightest for her tests. At the end of the day I walk away from this class knowing a lot about Biology because of how much I studied but the questions on her test are absolutely from a different planet. Take my advice, save your GPA, and do not take this class from this professor.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Do not take her class. She is always changing due dates, her tests are horrible, & she is just plain rude. SO MUCH BUSY WORK. She changed the group final to an individual final 2 weeks before the end of the semester without telling us. She is so frustrating. Rushes every class, uses iclicker & it never works but still grades it!!
One of the harder classes i've taken. She was pretty bad about being consistent on her class structure. Final was meant to be taken in groups but two weeks before the final she changed it to individual. Her recorded lectures will teach you pretty much everything there is to know for the exams. I watched those over and over and did well on each exam
Super great teacher! I adore her and would take physiology from her. She is pretty strict about her grading but it's not overbearing. She does weekly short quizzes instead of large exams, which makes it so much easier when it comes to studying.
Be ready to teach yourself there are quizzes every week and you work in a group all semester. I would say to try and take this class with a different professor.
Be prepared to teach yourself. You are in a group all semester quizzes every week.
"Coach" does not lecture effectively. To learn any of the material on the tests you will need to teach yourself. Every class is spent doing group packets, not relevant to tests questions, that often are incoherent. Unclear with expectations for the final. Unclear when trying to communicate simple ideas. Consider a different professor.
The professor required to complete questions that are pages long every class. She would lecture at the same time and ask the class online questions that had to be completed on your phone that was part of your grade. She cares about her students but I think she has too much going on for anyone to really follow or pertain any of the course material.
She was AMAZING! So caring of students and has the passion to help! The class isn't easy, you'll have to work for your grade but she sets up great study groups that can save you! Would definately recommend if you like to be personable, get additional help, and feel respected/valued!
If you care about your GPA don't take this professor. The layout of the class doesn't make sense. You have do do the homework videos 8 days before the quiz is due so you forget everything. I also youtubed most the topics because the videos didn't help me. Coach seemed irritated and condescending when you would ask a question.
The professor uses an engaging POGIL approach, making the class enjoyable despite the challenging content. Study tools like Unstuckstudy, along with the helpful group work, make this a worthy recommendation.
