hear nothin' but good things
very interesting stories that always correspond to the course. very fair marker.
lectures can be very boring, but is friendly and tests are easy, usually MC
Good course, but some lectures are a little dry. Overall great prof.
Hoping she'd talk about something pertinent to magick, didn't happen. Still good
interesting course. brought in lots of relevant examples & movies.
Failed me - then refused to meet with me...isnt that against policy?
Not so much easy, as able to really make you understand the material
Clear lecturer, pretty easy tests-m/c&matching
Dry, boring lectures, easy tests, no final
Boring Boring Boring.....but super easy tests!!
horrible prof, most uniformed prof, complete misuse of 'facts'
very passionate about ethics; nice and easy but a little dull
Boring lectures, but jail stories were good. She's pretty socialist too
She is clear about objectives, and has interesting personal experience to share
Good lectures, but religion is her speciality. A bit sour
rather vulgur, quite boring
super easy multiple choice tests, clear lecturer, a bit bitter
i agree with whoever said dry, boring lectures. can't stand going to her classes. she doesnt' seem too nice either.
yup, i agree...fairly decent prof, accomodating, usually interesting lectures, but slightly bitter
Wonderful Prof!
classes went on and on but she is a good prof- easy and knows a lot
Really great prof- knows alot of information..and tells you like it is, not so much easy, but makes sure students understand concepts
Easy class although I agree that she's very bitter.
Fantastic prof! Intersting and knowledgeable. Not bitter, just overworked.
She's a great professor. If you think she's bitter or hard, you just wait till you get mean and professors who are really hard. I think she is great and sarcastic, but not bitter. She's about teaching a class not about getting to know students personally.
I love Dr. Botting. Who wrote "vulgar"? Do you even know what that word means? Her classes are interesting, and she cares about what she does--a refreshing change from most of my other profs.
If you need help on your paper, visit her in office hours and she will guide you in the right direction. Exams all MC/matching...read notes, not text! Very educated woman!
Botting is byfar the best prof I have had at Uvic.
Really easy to follow and is quite the easy and far marker. If you need help with a paper, she's always more than willing to help you out. One of the best profs this school has. She loves what she does that for sure!!!!
Interesting course - she knows her stuff. Few tests and assignments but each worth alot of marks (obviously). Would recomend her.
Shes a witch!!!!! no joke!! Wow. It was invigorating being a part of her class - although she put a curse on me one time, I swear to god.
SO BORING!!! Just get the notes off reserve and read the text, skip the class, it's 3 hours a week that you won't get back. She's super nice, but she's not enthused about the 100 level material.

gives really boring lectures but hardly any work. 1midterm , 1 EASYproject that took me 30mins(internet assignment fill in the blanks worth 20%) and 1 final all multiple choice. DON'T BUY A TEXT, read the notes and you'll pass with flying colors
Although she gives boring lectures, she is very nice woman. Tends to give exams of all multiple choices. BUT you have to know the notes well, because the exam could touch every little tiny aspects which is really annoying.
She was very organized and taught very well. She knows her information except maybe she needs to make the way she teaches more intersting. But Heather is a good teacher for the most part :)
Good prof, altho she needs to warn us about buying the $93 text beforehand, as all test questions are taken from class notes. (I haven't even opened that book yet, and the course is already over!) Also, could be more prompt when replying to her emails.
Good prof, but lectures are a tad on the dry side. All the notes are on reserve and she takes all of her exam questions right from her notes.
She strikes me as an extremely bitter person...her lectures tend to descend into bitter rants. She flies off the handle if anyone so much as whispers during class. Otherwise her lectures are boring but straightforward, right out of the reserve notes.
Boring!!!
she needs to make her notes for spread apart so that we don't have to study 14 chapters all at once when the final comes around. also needs to make lessons more interesting.
Interesting material. I actually appreciated the rants and tangents. Minimal workload and optional lectures. You could probably devote 12 hours of studying for both tests and 1 hour to do the assignment, miss all the classes and get an A.
final was a joke. taken completely from the reserve notes, don't bother with the textbook. a lot of t/f and a lot of matching questions. i didn't really go to class after the midterm, i only read the reserve notes twice and im pretty sure i aced it.
you don't even need to go to the class... get the reserve notes, read them over a bit, and you've got an automatic A.
I've had Dr. Botting for 6 courses now: 100,306,310,311,312,323. Her 100 course inspired me to switch my program to Anthropology. I haven't regretted it once. All her courses are extremely insiteful. She is just a great teacher :)
She is too easy. Lectures are dry. Offers no real helpful instruction. Doesnt care about students or material teaching at all. People like her, b/c she is an easy marker. Buy the coursepack ,read it, classes are waste of time. Unfair project marker.
The worst class I've ever taken. She reminded me of a female Jack from the Nightmare before Christmas. I never actually attended the class because I never saw the point.
I'm sad to say that I bought all 4 texts. It's a shame becuase the only one I opened was the coursepack and I still did great in the class. If you want a GPA booster, take one of her courses. If you want to learn something, I'd suggest looking elsewher
She is a wonderfully, clear and percise teacher. She is also sexy for her age.
I like the idea of medical anthro- but the way that Botting lectures isn't my style. She reads off the notes.... Just study her notes and you will ace the tests
Told our class that she had to give us low/stricts marks on our papers because our class average on one test way high. Getting my first "D" without any comments on my paper did not impress me.
Tried to make our class "tough" in order to balance out the high marks in her other classes. Seems like a mean person. Very biased.
Very knowledgeable and presented the material with great clarity. Her lectures kept me awake on coffee free days.
Class is pretty boring but its very easy. She seems kinda bitter about teaching. Some of the stuff is fairly interesting and the way the class is structured it is a good filler class no extra work at all.
This class is a breeze to get through. You just follow along with the notes in class - no thinking required! The class is really straight forward and really interesting. I'm definitely going to take more anthropology courses!
i've never seen a prof so effective on subjects. very informative, very inspiring. don't need to goto lectures to pass this course but i love love her lectures. i'll take more of her courses. she's a charming intellegent prof.
Lectures pretty boring, but content is interesting. She is really intelligent. Her tests were really easy. Notes on reserve are handy, you only need to study those for the tests.
Fairly interesting topic, reserve notes helpful but her tests are getting tougher!
Don't Buy the test book. Simply copy the notes on reserve and goto lectures. Botting is clear with what she wants you to know and the notes (although slightly unorganized) are all you need to study because her exams are fairly easy and based (word for word sometimes) on them. Class is a bit boring.
What an interesting and easy elective. An easy A- or A as long as you follow her advice, copy reserve notes and study them. The textbook is futile for her class, STUDY her RESERVE notes from the library anmd you will do awesome, a pure memorization course with two multiple choice tests and a multple choice final, no papers!! Botting is magnificent.
A great class for an easy A, but also turns out to be really interesting.
Though basically a good teacher, you do not want to get on her bad side. If she decides for some reason that she doesn't like you, she can be a first class *****. Sometimes you may not even be certain what you've done. Be warned.
I wasn't sure of what to make of Heather when I had the first class. She's soft-spoken and sometimes a little dull. As the term went on, I realized how extremely knowledgeable she was. The class' value isn't what is tested on-- it's what you personally take from it. That being said, the tests and paper are quite easy. I would take another with her.
Very straightforward class, very smart prof. Paper and exams are easy [if go to ckass and do the readings]and you learn A LOT. Great class to take
Her classes are very straight forward, so if you want something easy, understandable and will get you an "A", take her classes. On the other hand, she is not thought provoking or open to suggestion or comment. It's her way or no way and that goes on the exam questions and answers as well. Don't pick the best answer, pick Heather's opinion.
if you want an easy, straightforeward class, take one with botting. you always know what to expect with test, and assignments multiple choice midterm and exam with a paper. if you go to class, and read her notes you will do great. at last a class with no trick questions, straightforward and to the point. her voice is very quiet so sit at the front
She is a very good teacher, and is very willing to talk out different opinions after class. Clear on what you need to learn, her exams can be easy, but watch out for the Medical Anth final!
Excellent professor. Knowledgeable and interesting, fair and respectful to students.
Heather really cares about her profession, but she takes on too many classes and as a result she is overtaxed. On the plus side, she is a really easy marker and all notes are availible in the reserve. SIt near the front of the class to avoid boredom (her voice is very quiet).
Really good professor. As long as you read the reserve notes her tests are straight forward. Just a warning though - her exams focus on the really nitty gritty points. Make sure you memorize all the meticulous details before sitting an exam. Take the class if you want an easy A :)
Good teacher, very approachable, knowledgeable. Exams are a bit tricky, awkwardly worded or specific to minute details but all in all a great teacher. I will take more classes with her.
Applied Anthropology was the easiest class of my entire undergraduate degree. It was good because I had to put in VERY little work to get an A, but bad because I learned nothing and listened to her talk about the "real world" and how great it was, without ever feeling like she was anywhere close to it.
Boring! This prof definetly approaches the subject and teaches with her own bias- a bit frustrating at times. exams easy, but content dry dry dry!!!
Dr. Botting is a great teacher. She is very approachable and she knows her stuff. She's a little disorganized (in an endearing way) but she lays our her expectations, assignments and course notes fairly clearly. Tests can sometimes be tricky (lots of double negatives or awkwardly worded multiple choice) but it's fairly easy to get good marks.
Heather is really nice, and cares about people in general. But, sometimes her notes can be pretty confusing. Even though I find reading the notes eqivalent to reading a molecular biology paper, her exam questions are pretty easy. If you get the general concepts and remember key phrases from the notes, you'll be fine on exams.
Very easy and interesting class.. just memorize the notes and you'll be fine.
if you want a good grade, take a class with botting. if you want to avoid being bored into a coma, avoid her at all costs.
Folklore and mythology contained no references to mythology or folklore, but if you're in to conspiracy theories or diagrams that explain paradigm shifts with interlocking circles it's the class for you. Mostly just rambling about her politcal views and studying theories that only mean anything to the guy who made them up. Pointless class.
Class lectures are boring, no need to attend to get a good grade. Just memorize notes from notes for midterm and final.
I have taken a few of her classes, and always find them to be interesting, relaxed and fairly easy. Even though she does not make her classes hard I feel that I learn a lot from them. She is a very good teacher and seems to really care about the success of her students.
Lots of terminology memorization, nothing else. The concepts were easy to understand. Also, I found that her political beliefs found their way into the lecture where I felt their input was unnecessary. I left many lectures, as I was bored out of my mind. Staying awake was difficult.
Really easy. MC tests and small assignments. She is relatively clear about expectations. Read the texts for tests.
Honestly, the worst prof at uvic. her lecture notes are ridiculous and wordy (and are tested in detail on the MC). she also forces here extreme feminist/environmentalist/anti-capitalist ways on her students (i.e. she teaches her opinions and not the facts). She made what could have been interesting material a struggle to learn.
she seems like a nice person but literally reads off her notes for the whole 2 1/2 hour class, i went three times all semester because of this. the tutorial leader cynthia was more helpful and interesting. this class was a joke.
Botting is very passionate about the topics she covers. She's been doing this for decades and knows her stuff cold. Classes can get a bit dull, especially a three hour lecture, so I recommend either Sudoku or Crossword Puzzles. It is always good to attend lectures, however, if you just can't seem to make it, all the info is in the textbook. :)
I have grown fond of Botting after ANTH 200 & now 316 because of her personality; I think she has a passion for what she does. Drawbacks, however, include disorganization and forgetfulness. She is so easy-going in her lectures, I get bored. She reads directly off her notes which I do not like. BUT her exams are so easy. Her classes are a GPA booster
Ugggh. It's super easy to get a good grade, but Botting is just crazy annoying and is often mixed up. She's super pushy with her views, and just rambles about how evil everything is unless anthropology has fixed it. Don't bother attending lecture or reading the text unless you like wasting your time. Just memorize her notes and you're golden.
so boring, but so easy. she gives you a package of notes (either a course pack or online) and thats all you need. never need to attend class nor buy the text. Boring lecturer, assignments easy, she has no passion, but she is very approachable if you need help. I recommend it as a GPA booster, easiest A you will ever get in University.
This professor is ridiculous. She makes gross generalizations and basically spouts conspiracy theory. I find the class unbearable. It seemed an interesting topic..wrong Very quickly she turned it into her own personal forum to basically vent her problems with the "system". Course is pretty easy, but I would advise it is totally NOT worth it!!
Not engaging in anyway during lectures, can't be bothered to proof-read the course packs she assigns, they are riddled with spelling mistakes and inconsistencies, doesn't respond to emails, and just overall doesn't seem to care whatsoever. Arguably one of the worst profs I've had at UVic.
Dr. Botting is an eccentric lady but passionate about what she does and a person just has to keep in mind their own perspective. Altogether very thought-provoking, whether you agree with her views or not, and a great class for anybody to take, anthro major or not. Never email her, go visit her instead and she's super helpful.
The one good part about her class is that you don't have to attend it. She just recites her lecture notes which are posted online so going to class is just a waste of 2 hours. Her tests are pretty easy but the material is really boring and she gets really preachy about the "evils of corporations".
Horrible teacher! She's a nice person, but can't teach to save her life. She doesn't test on facts, or information from the text, but on her own feminist, anti capitalist views. Her class is very boring, and it's frusterating to listen to her preech about subject matter seeminly irrelevant to the class, but somehow still on all the tests
Watching her fight with the projector was the highlight of my Tuesdays. Course material is more interesting than her lectures. Don't bother taking notes during lecture because everything you need to know is already given to you. Does not respond to email, but very nice in person.
Dr Botting put me off anthropology. As others have said, she teaches her own opinions and ideology, rather than facts. It's as if she thinks her students can't think for themselves. Here is a one-sentence summary of the course: Western culture, corporations, and progress are evil, and we would all be better off if we were more like the Yanomamo.
I took this class in the spring of 2010. The course material is interesting but not when she's teaching. She was so quiet and I could barely hear her even when sitting up front. She speaks in monotone which makes the class increadibly hard to not zone out in. She posts all her lecture notes and slides online so don't go.
Seriously: if you do not need this class DO NOT TAKE IT. Prof Botting is the most biased and incompetent prof I have ever had. Lectures consist of half facts, half anti-corporate rants. I could feel myself getting dumber in this class.
Nice woman, obviously smart, but I couldnt understand her choice of topics to discuss. Most of her time was spent talking about corporations and the evil world. Her classes were actually kind of depressing. I dont think this topic is really her thing, I understand she does a lot better with discussing religion.
Nice lady but so monotone and boring it sucks the life out of you. Coursepack full of errors, openly doesn't care about attendance, material, accuracy, student interest, lectures straight from inaccurate coursepak. Avoid if you want to like school, otherwise an easy A with no need to attend. Textbook material is at least good for those who read it.
Just bad. Just really really bad. Monotone voice, lack of interest in the material, spelling and grammar errors in lectures and assignment guides. For the one assignment we had to do she put 4 photocopied pages of a book on reserve. Seriously, just pay a bit of money so you can post that info online for students!
Yes, she has her biases; if you've taken a class with her before her spin on terms and concepts will be familiar. Botting has a tendency to read straight off her powerpoints but I've never found her monotonous. Her take on folklore gave the subject new life. Sometimes felt like a meditation class. Easy A if you do the work.
Super cool lady, a wealth of knowledge, but has better things to be doing than teaching it seems. Very very easy to get an A with Botting if you read the powerpoints. I just resent that we have to buy the supplementary texts and she never seems to test on them.
A fantastic professor. She is a master at designing courses, they are easy/straightforward to digest and you always know what is expected of you when you come to the exam. Her course on Contemporary Folklore is inspiring and very interesting no matter what your background. People should seriously lay off with the negative comments!
I was excited to take her anthropology of religion class until I found that the course was filled with inaccuracies due to her excessive use of Wikipedia. Her class lectures were poorly constructed and presented, making attendance worthless. Don't waste your time and money by taking one of her courses.
This wasn't the first class I have taken with her, but they're all laid out the same. Texts are useless, so borrow them from the library if you want to do the readings. MC exams based on lectures, short, easy assignments. Reads off powerpoints during lectures; just stay home and read them yourself. BUT easy marks and interesting subject matter.
All her classes are laid out the same, the tests are very clear, all multiple choice questions based on the slides she posts online. Assignments are simple and not too long. Attendance isn't mandatory because she reads off the slides, and the slides are online.
Hmm. She's a nice lady. And you have to be seriously uninterested to get anything below a B+. But she's really just an activist dismayed at the state of the world (especially anything Harper-related. I'm with her, but could do without the overkill). Really weirdly worded multiple choice exams. Could challenge students more without being difficult.
Professor Botting is a really nice woman, and she's really eager to help if you contact her. BUT, she teaches her classes like online courses. I know many people who did not attend her classes but somehow managed an A+, even barely touching the textbook. She posts all examinable material online, or it's available in the library. Easy MC tests.
Amazing professor; I was sad to see her retire. She knows her political anthropology. Her classes were ALL interesting from folklore to circumpolar anthropology. I learned so much!
