Great teacher, always willing to help you. Would recommend taking her.
I took her during summer semester, which was her first semester at UT. It was a fast paced course, and the tests were nothing like her practice worksheets. The reviews she gave were also useless. She was a very nice person, and easy to talk to, but her class was very difficult.
Dr. Bass is one of the worst professors I have ever had. She teaches straight off a powerpoint. The class is so fast paced, don't bother taking notes. By the time you have written one sentence, she will be on the next slide. She thinks that because some students took Chemistry in highschool, that everyone still remembers how to do everything.
Dr. Bass is a hottie!
Dr. Bass is great. Any time that I have needed help, I simply stay after class and my confusion is cleared up right away or have gone to office hours. She is there to help you. Her class is hard because it is a lot of material in short segments of time, but it is not impossible. Regardless of what you did in high school, you have to study.
Dr. Bass is a really fun professor! She teaches well, and so long as you pay attention you will pass. She makes lectures really fun too.
Honestly she's not a bad teacher, the class itself just sucks if you aren't super into chemistry. She's really sweet though, just teaches a little too fast for my liking. Compared to what I hear about other chem profs though, she's not too bad.
She is a great teacher. She makes class not boring, and is pretty funny. She explains the material fairly well and the tests are from the powerpoints so study those!
If you think this is going to be an easy class because it is Chem 100, you are WRONG. Her tests are so much harder than her worksheets. Go to class for clicker participation points and do your homework. This class is not fun and best of luck if take it with her.
Dr. Bass comes across as a nice teacher at first. And while she certainly isn't the worst teacher I've had, I wouldn't consider her to be a particularly kind person. She is VERY tough on grading and her exams are nothing like the material she teaches in class. Be prepared to spend copious amounts of time studying even if you're good at chemistry.
Heather's lectures are kind of fast and she can overcomplicate things at times, but she makes the tests super easy. Just go answer the clicker questions to get the credit and study the book and you'll make an A. Easy.
Extremely hard tests. It's best to read the book along with taking notes in the class. Redoing the workshops she hands out is good practice for the test. Had to make good grades in lab and homework assignments to make up for bad test scores.
Dr. Bass was certainly a lot of fun to listen to in lectures. However, she moves pretty fast and it was sometimes hard for me to keep up with her in lectures. It was also sometimes hard to understand what she was trying to explain to the class even after asking for clarification. That being said, she is very approachable and engaging!
Dr. Bass was very engaging and fun. She would have conversations with people as they came in, making the 350 person class feel small. She was very good at explanations and very funny. She went through power points a little quick though.
She is a good professor overall but she can be a bit confusing sometimes. She is fast paced. My best advice if you take her is to print out the notes before hand and write down some important things she may say in class. She is very kind and helpful though. I would take her again.
She was great and extremely attractive. I made an A easily! Tests are easy! you really need to take her
Dr. Bass is laid back, gives good lectures, and always willing to help. She was fair about exams grades (there were 4), would do a regrade upon request, and dropped the lowest exam grade. The final wasn't too hard. She did a good job covering and reviewing all exam material. I did not use the book, but the (very easy) online homework is required.
As a Junior, she is one of the best teachers I've had at UT. Also really hot.
Every time I sit in her lecture I get angry... Yes, she's attractive and quite pleasing to look at, but that doesn't make up for the fact that I (seems like most) don't know what the HELL is going on while in class. She goes at a brisk pace which isn't terrible, but when doing homework, it's as though I've never even seen the stuff before. No good.
Extremely fast pace lectures. She will always assume you have seen the material before and understand it unless you say otherwise. She's usually pretty vague about what will be on the test. Oh, the thing you talked about for .02 seconds in class, there will be 4 exam questions over it. Must go to class, important to have an amazing TA to teach you
She is by far the best chem teacher and best teacher at UT too. She is always available to help and respond to email really fast. It is a part of chem o be difficult but everything is reasonable to help u understand material. Homework with tons of try if u do wrong so retry over again after you submit and get see the explain
Dr. Bass is extremely helpful and understanding. She really takes the time to make sure you understand the material. Does a TON of reviewing (more than she should for a college class). Really really sweet, and loves you if you participate and show interest. I would definitely recommend her for another student taking Chemistry 100110.
She's a great teacher, and is very approachable if you need help or clarification. There are many review opportunities, do the homework, go to class, and pay attention and you should do well in this class
Dr. Bass is a great teacher. She is very well organized and lets you know clearly what she expects throughout the semester. She is very helpful during office hours and has fun and engaging lectures. Her exams are from her worksheets, so it is a very fair class. It made me love chemistry!!!!
Professor Bass is one of the better chemistry professors at UT, but she does move very quickly through her lectures. Her tests aren't too bad as long as you give yourself plenty of time to study for them. I would take her again over any of the other chemistry professors.
Dr Bass is really helpful when it comes to explaining her lectures. She is very easy to get in contact with and really cares about her students. During labs she will walk around and help you if you're struggling and won't make you feel weird for asking. Class attendance is key to passing this class- would have done much better if i hadn't skipped
Chem 110 is intro to organic, so of course it's going to be somewhat difficult. I personally really liked her teaching style and thought she explained things really well. Some of the test questions were difficult but overall they weren't too bad. Clicker questions count as attendance so it's vital for your grade to attend each lecture.
Chemistry is always a hard class. I felt Bass is a very clear teacher and tries her best to make the class fun and entertaining. As well as she gives extra credit and is actually super helpful. But I had to attend tutoring multiple times a week. Just keep in mind its chemistry and a tough subject. She does her best.
She is so nice. Her tests are super hard, but that's chemistry.
Dr. Bass is a great teacher. Chemistry is a difficult subject, but if you put in the work, you should be fine. One of the best teachers I've had at UTK. I highly recommend her.
Had her for 100, and took her again for 110. Organic is obviously tough for non chem majors, but Bass does a good job. Reviews a lot for the three tests and final. She's very fair and really nice. She's very approachable if you need help. The tests are hard but if you put in the work, pay attention to the lecture, and study, it's not hard to pass.
very approachable and nice, but a fast teacher. helpful in the lab. if you don't have a strong background in chemistry before entering her class your going to struggle. test are extremely hard .
Dr. Bass was an awesome teacher. She goes fast through material, but she gives a lot of extra worksheets and reviews to ask questions and master the material. She makes lectures fun and interactive. A
She is a hilarious professor and makes chemistry interesting. The tests are mildly difficult; it is definitely a class you have to spend time studying for. But I would highly recommend her to anyone taking chemistry!!
Absolutely great professor. By far the best from what I've heard from other CHEM120 students. She's quirky and easy to listen to in lecture. Freshman chemistry sucks no matter what, but she makes it more tolerable.
Overall I liked this class. Chemistry is a pretty difficult subject but Dr. Bass makes it more clear. Her tests can be difficult and sometimes the material on her "study guides" are not even on the exams. She is really nice and makes Chem fun. You will definitely have to study outside of class but that is to be expected for a science course.
Chemistry is extremely hard so get ready to work. I spent all of my time on chemistry this semester and still didn't do amazing on it. Dr. Bass is really nice though, and she tries to help however she can. She goes a little fast when it comes to lectures but discussion and labs help to reiterate the information. Clicker points are a life saver!!!
I found that by the end of the semester i was just going to lecture for clicker points. She does not teach much of anything in lecture, she just basically reads from the slides. If she does do an example she goes too fast and doesn't really explain how she got it. She is very nice though.
One of my favorite professors ever! Very helpful and makes it so the lectures aren't miserable but even a little fun sometimes. Clear on what will be on the test and gives practice tests on black board. Notes are power point format and she releases the blank one before the lecture then after she finishes the chapter posts blanks filled in.
Heather Bass is a nice professor who I would take again. She makes learning fun and chemistry not as hard as I thought it would be in college.
Dr. Bass is a great teacher. She explains every thing well and will offer a different explanation if you are confused.
Dr. Bass is amazing! She makes lectures fun, and she posts a practice test before the exam. Chemistry is difficult, but you'll do well if you put the work in. She is a great teacher, and she truly wants to make sure her students understand the material. One of my favorite professors so far!
Dr. Bass is seriously the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. Chem is hard but she explains everything really well. Clickers are taken for participation, but you should go to class anyway to understand. Has powerpoint notes with blanks for you to fill out that are essential. Overall, really helpful and would take again.
Take her. She made me enjoy chemistry, but it is a lot of work. She wants you to succeed; she posts all of the practice workshops and last year's exams. Before each exam, she outlines what will be on the test, so be there for that, but the book is seriously not necessary. You need the online book though for HW. Definitely taking again for 110.
I have now taken many chemistry courses and she is the easiest professor I have had yet. She is really nice and cares that you succeed. Her exams are also not as hard as other professors at UT. Take her if you can. The coursework is hard, but she does her best to make you do well. The curve is also very nice. Go to SI I got extra credit for it!
Its Chemistry so its going to be hard and you are going to have to put forth the effort. She wants everyone to succeed and puts old tests and workshops online for practice. Going to class is the only way you will do well in this class and you get points for participation. The clicker questions in class also help on the tests. Study study study
Best gen chem teacher you will have at UT. She's awesome, but you will have to understand the concepts and study. She does a very good job in explaining them, and the tests are pretty straight forward if you have studied.
Dr Bass was the easiest of the chem 120 teachers but still moves very fast. She teaches as if you already know chemistry and moves through the material quickly. Her tests weren't that bad but I was very unprepared for the departmental final.
Dr Bass was the easiest of the chem 120 teachers but still moves very fast. She teaches as if you already know chemistry and moves through the material quickly. Her tests weren't that bad but I was very unprepared for the departmental final
Homework takes 6+ hours but it's an easy grade and helps you understand the material. Study the worksheets from discussion and the old exams she puts on bb. If you can do everything on those you'll make an A on the exams. Moves very fast in lecture and I always left the class confused. Take advantage of your discussion class, that's what saved me.
Bass is a really great teacher. She may move fast in lecture, but she is always willing to help and makes an effort to learn who you are if you talk to her. Her tests aren't bad, although the final is hard.
Dr. Bass is a great professor; definitely the best at UT for General Chemistry. She moves through the material quickly, but she has a ton of office hours and is always willing to help you. I highly recommend taking Dr. Bass if you have the chance!
NO. Went with my mom to meet her before the class every started and she seemed super nice. When the class got going, she was super unclear and could care less if you learned or not. I went to her office many times and she was unwilling to help at all. Steer clear of her. Take Yang like my room mate did.
Homework takes hours. Goes too fast in her lectures that no one knows that she's doing. Exams are impossibly hard no matter how hard you study. Does not offer help outside of class or in lab. Will never take her again. If you are not good at science, or even if you are it doesn't matter, she will not help your GPA
Chemistry is hard as it is, but in this class I felt so unprepared. I did not get much learning out of this class at all. Lectures were boring and hard to follow. There was not much clarity and not much help given outside of class. Homework is extremely long and useless.
Dr. Bass was a fun professor. Her lectures were helpful and never boring. She gave us lots of opportunities for extra credit as well.
I would definitely recommend her. I actually really enjoyed Chemistry this last semester because of her. I regularly went to her office hours which I would recommend if you are at all confused. She is more than willing to help you on anything you don't understand including the homework. Very nice and helpful!
She seems really passionate about her job, and does a great job explaining things. Wish I had her for the next chemistry too.
Dr. Bass was a great professor for CH100, I am currently taking her for CH120 and she is just as great and the class is just as easy (got a 95 on the last exam without trying, really)- just do the online work- its helpful and the points add up. She seemed intimidating at first but she's very nice. Coming to class and discussion matters a lot!!
Bass is a very enthusiastic teacher who understands chemistry is not a well enjoyed subject. Although I am not a big fan of chem, I actually enjoyed going to lecture because she was always making jokes and thoroughly enjoying her job. The positive attitude has a great effect, the class is tough but she will help. All you have to do is ask.
Dr. Bass is very knowledgeable in this field, but sometimes she doesn't quite explain things in a way that I can understand. I am a quick learner and can usually decipher teaching, but sometimes I am confused until I go to discussion and my TA helps to explain things. She walks around during lab and talks with people. Would take again.
I LOVE PROFESSOR BASS. Im no good at chem and I would have failed it if I had taken any other Professor. I would recommend her to anyone!
Not a bad teacher, simply goes through material quickly during lecture. Study hard for the tests the week of the tests.
Dr. Bass is fantastic! Tests are hard, but thats to be expected when taking Chemistry. Go to lecture, go to discussion, and do Mastering and you will do fine.
Dr. Bass is awesome. I'm not sure why people are saying she moves too quickly in lectures. She is always more than happy to stop and answer questions or go back over something if people don't seem to be getting it. Gen Chem seems to be a troubling class for a large amount of students that take it, but Bass is probably the best to take.
She is the best in the department but her lectures are terrible. She basically talks to herself the whole time and goes super fast.
Dr. Bass is an excellent instructor. She is willing to lend a hand whenever needed despite a large class size. The tests are pretty brutal, but she has the easiest tests in the department. (except for the final). Does give extra credit opportunities. Fast paced, and you have to pay attention and do the homework, but she is the best chem professor.
Class is fast paced but she explains everything very well. She is the best chem professor in the department. Gives extra credit. She's the best at explaining super hard concepts and will answer any questions. Although attendance isn't mandatory, she gives clicker questions and goes over many topics in one class.
Dr. Bass is an excellent instructor. This was my first college Chem class (I'm a junior) and I found it interesting, challenging and rewarding. Study hard and attend every class possible. Try to pirate the book because I didn't open mine all semester and still got a solid grade. She just genuinely loves teaching and it's a pleasant experience.
I love Dr. Bass! She made chemistry interesting; I took her for Chem 100 and 110. She CARES about her students. When I was in the hospital for a week, she was very nice about it and didn't count me absent for the days I missed. Just work hard, and you will do well. TAKE HER !!!
If you're going to take chemistry at UT, TAKE DR. BASS! Attendance isn't mandatory but there are clicker questions so you wouldn't want to miss those. Lecture is fast paced, but discussion classes definitely helped me understand better. Just do everything you're supposed to do and you'll end with a decent grade because she curves at the end.
Possibly the cutest professor I have ever seen. She is SO funny, and I love listening to her teach. She LOVES chemistry, and it truly shows. If you ever need any help, she is always available during office hours and she is VERY quick with replying to emails. Due to the course load, you HAVE to study, but, the difficulty is not due to her teaching.
Dr. Bass is a great professor. I have a really hard time grasping scientific concepts so I see her about once a week in office hours. She is always willing to help and never gets frustrated. Her lectures are long and can be boring, but you can get easy clicker question points. Take Bass if you can!
Is willing to work with you outside of class if you need help.
She is a funny person, a little quirky. She is nothing less than brilliant, and that shows becomes sometimes she speaks to herself during lecture by using unfamiliar terms. She isn't terrible, just a speedy talker, that being said, if you need her to slow down, as her, and she will definitely help.
Dr. Bass is very energetic every class and sometimes seems to get carried away with lecture and moves too fast. Her tests aren't too difficult if you do the homework and study.
Dr. Bass is a wonderful lecturer! The class is challenging itself, but there is no one else that I would rather take. Her grades consist of online homework, clickers, labs, and the exams. The lectures can get fast, and she will throw a lot of material at you. As long as you take adequate notes and find helpful study tools you will be fine!
I am so glad I took Dr. Bass. She is hilarious and easily understood. I have friends who are in different chem 120 professors' classes and it is easy to see that I have succeeded more than them. She is truly the best!
Dr. Bass is probably the best prof to take for 120. Although I didn't do so hot in the class, if you take labs, homework, and attendance seriously, you should be fine overall. Requires clicker for participation every lecture. Stay on top of your material & seek help if need be. Dr. Bass is always helpful & available.
I was really worried about taking chemistry because I had almost no past experience with it, but overall Dr. Bass is a good professor. She tends to move extremely fast during notes, but you have a discussion period with your TA that helps a lot. It's definitely a difficult course with a lot of studying, but I wouldn't have taken it with anyone else
Pay attention in class and actually study throughout the year and you should be fine. She will explain topics to you if you make an effort. She's a good enough professor, she just has pretty hard tests.
I think Dr. Bass is a perfect fit for this course. She wants you to succeed and does not make it unnecessarily difficult for the student. You have to go to class because there are clicker questions and there's online homework due every other week or so. She gives you everything you need to succeed, you just have to be willing to put in the effort.
This class was so fast paced I felt like I learned nothing in lecture. By the time I had finished writing down what was on the slide Bass had already moved on to another topic. I enjoyed chemistry in high school, but had a tough time learning anything in lectures. Office hours were very helpful though. Lab was kinda a waste of time.
Highly recommend, especially over Dr. Yang. Bass is very nerdy about chemistry, and her passion is infectious to students. Has no problem re-explaining concepts or doing extra examples. Homework very easy to get an A on (can retry many times). Do not bother buying textbook - you won't need it. Clicker q's every day but not huge for grade.
Chem can be hard, but she made it more fun. Shes so cute and loves the material. Always will to help student.
This is the second semester I have had her and this semester has been much harder. Organic Chemistry is no joke but she really cares about her students and really wants them to succeed. Tests can be hard and require hard core studying. Do not just read over your notes before the exam. Study and go to lectures!
The tests take weeks to study for. You get practice test, but never end up helping as much as you think. I hadn't ever gotten a grade lower than a B+ and I received a C+ in her class. I studied so hard for every exam and the highest grade I ever received was a 79%. Your clicker points count right vs wrong. Sweet lady, too smart for her own good.
Dr. Bass is the goddess of Chem. No lie. Her classes are hard, but then again it is Chemistry. She knows what she is talking about and she is super sweet if you go and ask her for help. If you do the homework and answer the clicker questions then she won't let you fail. Just study if you can and you'll be fine.
Lectures are boring but it is Chemistry. Mrs. Bass tries to make class fun and she is a good teacher. If you do not pass this class it is your fault not hers. Do the homework, show up to lecture and labs, and study early for tests. Lecture is mandatory. She really cares and wants you to do good. I highly recommend.
Dr. Bass is great! I am retaking this class from last semester. Being able to compare her to other teachers in the chemistry department, I have to say she is the best. She is so helpful and explains everything really clear. If you do not understand a concept she is more than willing to work with you and responds super fast! You won' regret taking!
Dr. Bass is a great teacher! She goes pretty fast though and is a tough grader but will work with you to make sure you understand everything.
Clicker questions everyday so don't skip class. Dr. Bass/Boyd is great for such a difficult class such as organic chemistry. She is funny and nerdy, easy to listen to. Srat girls are super disrespectful in this class and talk so sit up front. Labs are fun, hw is easy. I would recommend her, but this is a hard class so don't skip class.
If you have the option, choose Bass as your professor every time. I didn't have the pleasure of having her as my lecturer this semester, but she covered my class while my professor went out of town. She explained everything perfectly and was SO SO sweet. Two days with her made my test grade shoot up 25 points. UT is honestly so lucky to have her.
best choice you'll make in the chem department!! love her! if i had a bad thing to say it would be that i had her when she was pregnant and she went into labor a week before the final :(
She goes through the material fairly quickly, but she is always willing to help with material and further explain anything you're having trouble with. You'll definitely want to take notes along with the powerpoints because the most important explanations are written out on the whiteboard. She's super sweet and understanding. Prepare for weekly hw!
I am hoping that she teaches CHEM130 the semester I take it. She was honestly that good at being a Chemistry professor. She went fast, but explained everything so nicely. She responds to emails really quickly. Go to her office hours! Take her every chance you get. From what I've heard of other professors, she blows them out the water.
One of the best professors I've had at UTK, she was willing to help anyone who didn't understand, was funny, and offered really helpful lectures and provided examples in class. Attendance is only mandatory because of clicker questions so if you miss a day, don't worry. The power points were very clear/helpful and are online so one day gone is okay.
Chemistry is not an easy class for most people but Dr. Bass is a great teacher. The class requires a lot of focus and dedication but Dr. Bass makes the material easier to understand. The mastering chemistry homework can be a bit extensive sometimes so make sure to do it in advance and use the chemistry tutorial center and Dr. Bass's office hours.
Professor Bass/Boyd is an awesome professor. I never felt lost during the lectures. However, my biggest issue with her class was that no matter what I did I was never prepared for the exams. The exams were on a level of difficulty that we had not been prepared for. The workshops are far too easy and don't challenge you enough to do well on exams.
The class itself is not easy, but Dr. Bass helps you understand it.
Bass is very nice and will help if you see her during office hours. She is really smart, so she tends to go too fast during lecture and assumes we understand things we really don't. She did really well teaching the easier topics, but when it came to the harder topics, it was a hit or miss. Recommend over most other chem teachers
Her tests are a lot more difficult than the homework problems. She also includes trick questions.
Dr. Bass is a really good teacher she is usually available outside of class during her office hours and even though the classes are huge she will make time for every student. She is one of very few professors who cares and enjoys teaching. 11/10 would take again (If I had to take chemistry again).
If you dont spend all class admiring her beauty, you might get away with a B because shell go through 3 chapters by the time youve written your name. But shes hot so its okay i guess.
Heather is definitely the best professor in the chem department. Her tests are hard and she takes (a little too much) pride in her trick questions. That being said, you need to pay attention and study really hard. Go to supplemental instruction, office hours AND review sessions and you will make an A- or better. She is nice and wants you to succeed
Dr. Bass is a caring professor, however she flies through material that the majority of her students don't understand. She works too fast for many to even write down, thus causing the majority of comprehension to come from SI sessions. Tests are very hard, but the class overall is challenging.
You definitely have to be "all in" to earn an A in this class, but it is certainly achievable. Go to supplemental review sessions (available every week), do your homework, and practice problems. Practice, practice, practice. You have plenty of time to do this between exams. Lab and homework will really boost your grade too!
Dr. Bass is an amazing teacher, but do NOT expect just showing up to get you a good grade. You need to do the homework, easy 100. Go to the review sessions that the TA's sometimes host, they're very helpful. Actually study for your exams, she sometimes has trick questions. PARTICIPATION MATTERS. Posts powerpoints online
Dr. Bass was definitely the best Chem 100 teacher I could have asked for. She was easy to understand, gave plenty of notice before assignments and tests, and usually worked in some review days. If you don't understand something, utilize her office hours and she would be happy to help since its hard to get 1-on-1 help in a class of 300 people
Bass went pretty fast in lectures but the class overall wasn't that hard. Make sure to do the homework and go to class because the points will help you a lot at the end of the end of the semester. She is really accommodating and understands that she teaches a harder class so you should be able to pass the course even if you aren't good at chem.
I like Dr. Boyd a lot. I enjoy being in her class. However, chemistry is just tough and the exams are difficult. She throws in a trick question here and there. I do feel like she cares, though, and I think she is one of the best professors in the chemistry department! I tried my hardest lab, homework, lecture, and exams to get my A. Not easy.
This class is really really hard, but she definitely is the best teacher in the chem dept. Go to lecture, listen, take notes. Go to discussion. Ask for help.
She is a great professor, and really passionate about chemistry. She makes it seem easy for you and helps you understand in class. Highly recommend.
Dr. Boyd is amazing but you definitely need to work hard and attend class to do well. Tests are hard but she uploads the previous years test to help with studying. Josh M was my TA and I absolutely loved him! I had to take this class and it was hard but Dr. Boyd really is the best teacher for this class.
I've had her for Chem 100 and 110 and would've failed without her. She gives so many additional practice things, and plans things based on the classes feel. She is always willing to help out and knows what shes talking about. She's super friendly and usually lets you out of class early. BEST professor you could take for Chemistry.
Dr. Boyd (Bass) is the best professor I have ever had. She is so sweet, and truly cares about what she is teaching. I was on the fence about chemistry before, but after taking her Chem 100 and Chem 110 classes, I LOVE CHEMISTRY! Great examples, easy to understand, and so friendly!
Heather is super sweet and really knows her stuff when it comes to chemistry. She goes a little fast so I would recommend having slides on your laptop. She is extremely helpful in her office hours, and all of the exams are graded within a week.
Professor Boyd/Bass is an exceptional Professor. Not only is she accesible after class but has a genuinely cares for her students. Her lectures are amazing one of the few professors that just doesnt read off of the slides and actually works examples to have you better understand the material. TAKE CHEMISTRY WITH HER! You wont regret it!
Bass is a very sweet and helpful woman. She is clear in teaching the material, however she doesnt post her notes, so if you skip class youll be really confused. Her texts are extremely difficult, and the grading is really tough. If you mess up at the beginning, youll get almost no credit. The homework is also time consuming.
She is a very caring person and gives good lectures. If you skip, you'll miss the notes because she does not post them. Homework is very time consuming and little too much sometimes. Tests are graded tough. If you put in work and do well in lab, homework, and clicker questions, you can get AT LEAST a B.
Org Chem isn't an easy class, but Dr. Bass really breaks difficult concepts down so everyone can understand them, and is super helpful outside of class if you need extra help. I've taken 2 of her classes and would gladly take her again- she's knowledgeable, fair, engaging, and offers lots of test practice opportunities for challenging material.
Very tough subject for me, but Dr. Boyd(Bass) is probably the best chemistry professor in the department. Notes and lectures are all over the place so I had to rewrite them to make them coherent. She is available and approachable.
She is certainly the better choice over Yang. However, she flies through lectures. She asks if everyone understands and then moves on even after we all say, "NO". Homework is extremely difficult, and I never know how to do it because I always leave lecture discouraged and confused. She puts trick questions on tests, and the test averages are awful.
I took her for chem 120, if you go to class and pay attention in lectures and do your homework I didn't think the class was that bad. She's super nice and good at helping in her office hours
Dr. Bass(Boyd) was a great Chemistry Professor. If you do the homework (it is very time consuming) and really try on post labs, you should get at least a C. She genuinely cares, but her tests are no joke. You must really understand the material to do well on the exams. Go to her office hours and really pay attention on the homework, overall great.
I was so worried about Chemistry, but Boyd really explains things well. The tests were very challenging (there were 3 plus the final) and it was my hardest class hands down, but if you go to all of the lectures and study HARD it is definitely possible to get an A. Labs are easy As if you do your work. No quizzes, just online homework.
Chem 120 at UT Knoxville is hard anyways but probably this professor is your best bet of them all. Go to all labs or you'll fail. Go to lectures to get clicker points and remember to do homework online or you'll fail. You gotta study hard for the tests too, they are hard. A small curve at end of the semester. She isn't boring, its just the subject.
While attendance only counts for a small percentage of your grade, you will definitely fall behind if you don't show up. She speeds through lecture, but she has to in order to explain everything. The homework is also easy to forget, which is something that you don't want to do if you want to pass. The tests are difficult but achievable.
Prof Boyd is your best bet when taking any chem classes. She is very knowledgable on the subject and can help with any questions. Go to lectures to answer clicker question and so that you don't fall behind on course work. Its a hard class but if you put in the work you can make it through
Dr. Bass is sweet, but her lectures are disorganized and she moves extremely fast. She uses powerpoints which she posts online, but unless you take perfect notes, you will be unable to understand the information. Tests are very tricky, and require application of information learned. Both this class and chem 100 have tanked my GPA.
As already said, Dr. Boyd seems like a nice person, and I can tell she cares. However, her lectures were extremely disorganized and fast-paced. The tests are intentionally tricky and always extraordinarily difficult. I studied for weeks in advance for every exam and still couldn't get an A in this class, which was extremely discouraging.
You have to make sure to do the clicker questions. and you can't miss the discussions. make sure you do everything correctly with your lab notebook or else the grade will screw you. Study A LOT for all the exams-- really really difficult. she moves quickly through all topics and doesn't really review.
don't miss class. study a lot. she goes really fast with notes and the exams are really difficult even if you study a lot. she seems really caring and willing to help, just not the best teacher. easy to get lost in class and more often than not i don't know what's going on in class
She is caring but the exams are extremely difficult. There is always a few pages on the exams that are open ended questions. She is extremely fast in class, and we end up taking over 5 pages of notes every class, which includes 6-7 new concepts we need to know. never miss the homework assignments or you'll fail that part. Never miss lab.
Chem is an extremely hard class. I think professor Boyd does her best but she goes very fast and its hard to keep up. Shes a very sweet lady but her course work is insane.
Dr. Boyd is a great professor! The class itself can be challenging though, so I found that what helped me the most was going to Supplemental Instruction (SI), and getting help outside class
mainly nursing majors in this class, go to SI if you wanna pass with a decent grade. do your best on labs (hope for a good TA) and do extra credit homework. all grades matter in this class so take every grade seriously. if you study hard and know your material, you'll be fine. tests change every year but are similar as she gives you the old exam.
Dr. Boyd is an okay professor. She goes really fast and rushes through things that show up on the exam. Really study and do all lab work and you will be fine.
Dr. Boyd is a great professor, you can tell she cares about her students. The lectures can be fast but you have access to the PowerPoints and she posts her lecture notes. It is crucial to go to class or at least read through the notes.
Dr boyd is the best professor ever! she is so passionate and approachable and really wants you to do good! there is absolutely no reason you should not get an A in the class if you go to class and do the homework. I got above a 100 because there are extra credit questions on the tests. labs are annoying but get curved at the end. TAKE HER!
She goes through the material very quickly, and teaches like you already have an understanding of the course. Discussion is very helpful and reinforces the information from lecture. She responds to emails and is very helpful if you reach out to her. The class is hard in general, but Dr. Boyd is not a bad professor to have.
Dr. Boyd is such an amazing teacher. While she does go fast and the lecture content is very difficult, she does a really good job at helping students understand the content.
She goes fast in lecture so be prepared to take notes quickly or have your phone out to take pictures of what she writes. It will seem like the material is too much all at once, and that the material is super confusing. She is very approachable, so go to her office hours. Go to tutoring or your TA as well. This is a hard subject so get help.
Dr. Boyd is super sweet and approachable and does her best to make lectures interesting and fun. She talks pretty fast and has to move quickly through lecture in order to get through all of the material. Chemistry is a very hard subject. There is no "easy" class or professor. However, Dr. Boyd gives extra credit and curves at the end. Take her!
Dr. Boyd was a great chem professor! Office hours were everyday and were super helpful. Very clear about what is on exams and you'll be very prepared for each from the workshops and practice exam. Clicker questions everyday and online homework for each chapter. I never used the book but you have to opt in for homework access. Take her for sure!
Dr. Boyd is your best choice for a chemistry prof when taking general chemistry classes. She works out problems and makes notes that she projects as she lectures rather than just reading off the slides. Chemistry is a very difficult subject but she does her best to help you succeed.
If every Chemistry teacher was like Dr. Boyd, this department would be the best at the university. Dr. Boyd is very charismatic and easy to talk to about the material she is teaching. If you are ever confused, her office hours are always really helpful. She wants you to succeed, so just do the homework and ask questions if you are confused.
I suck at chemistry, but Dr. Boyd was really patient with me. (I went to office hours a lot.) She has a really great personality. That being said, her class has helped me realized that I don't learn well from lectures. I appreciate that she writes along with the powerpoints, though, so lectures are less stale.
Dr. Boyd is AMAZING. I had her for Chem100 and Chem110, and she did not disappoint. She is so helpful and truly wants her students to succeed. GO TO CLASS AND DISCUSSION! She is extremely helpful inside and outside of the classroom. These classes are difficult, but they are extremely manageable if you put in the work.
Dr. Boyd is a great lecturer who uses visuals in order for her students to better understand the subjects and works out every example problem on the slides and always asks for questions to be sure its clear or everyone. It is a caring environment in her lectures and she is always wanting to help. She gives a normal amnt of homework and is very kind
Attendance isn't mandatory, but she does do clicker questions which count towards your grade. Really nice and helpful even though the class itself is kinda tough.
Compared to other chemistry teachers, Heather is not terrible. However, this class was extremely difficult. She flies through the lectures so quickly it is hard to keep up, much less actually understand what is going on. This was the hardest class I have taken at UT. Go to office hours.
Dr. Boyd is one of the best professors I have ever had, it's a difficult subject matter but she conveys the ideas in an easy to understand way and she is always upbeat and positive and a real joy to take a class with. There is an endless amount of extra resources that I have never seen another prof provide, lots of extra credit. An A is obtainable.
Even though her tests are hard and she is very lecture heavy, she made the class enjoyable. You can tell she deeply cares about her students and does not want to totally kill us with work. I took Chem 100 and 120 with her and loved both classes. Definitely go to lecture or you will be lost.
Shes very nice and you can tell she enjoys teaching.
She is the BEST chem prof out there! This is my second time taking chem120, I had yang the first time and it was a nightmare. Dr. Boyd truly cares about you and your success and doesn't make you feel stupid if you have a question. She answers emails almost immediately and her office hours are amazing. 10/10 person and you won't regret taking her!
great teacher
Dr. Boyd kind of got a bad rap in class. Students would frequently get annoyed when she didn't go back during lectures. She does move very fast, but always has suggested readings from the textbook which help make the speed less of an issue. I always enjoyed her lectures and she curves tests. I do wish that the TAs knew what they were doing though.
I took Chem110 via Zoom. It was a tough class, but Boyd was always very helpful if I had any questions. She answers emails in a timely manner. She goes through lectures quickly, but she has to in order to cover everything. She does post her lectures on Canvas so you can always go back if you miss anything. Super friendly and helpful. 10/10
Dr. Boyd is really amazing. However her lectures are a little confusing and very fast paced but if you just go back and rewatch it slower then itll be fine. The test are hard, the final is even harder, but shes really understand. She emails back very fast with clear instructions, she is encouraging, and truly cares about her students.
i love this woman, I hate chem but she makes me not want to cry during lectures like my professor last semester
Living legend. Icon. SOOO pretty love her. Chem is never easy but she's truly a great lecturer and is so considerate of her students. very communicative. Tests aren't easy... provides old exams and many problem sets. SI and discussion will help if u lost. in summary heather is the chem queen
I had her for CHEM100 and CHEM110. The class sucked but Dr. Boyd is amazing! She knows the class is hard so she tries to make it as easy as possible (its def still hard though) Both were the hardest class I've ever taken and exams are tough. Our exams are normally online but when our final was moved to in-person Dr. Boyd was so caring and flexible.
She is an amazing chemistry professor. You don't want anyone else. She answers every question during the lectures and there's not a ton of homework. In my opinion chem 110 is easier than 100 because there's no math. She is so sweet and creates extra practice for you. You can pass this class easily if you study.
The lectures didnt really prepare for the tests which were very tricky.
This was my first course with Dr. Boyd and I'm happy that I took her! She offers help during office hours and there are Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions led by a student that has already mastered the course. Before exams, there are TA and SI reviews so make sure you take advantage of that. Repetition is definitely key in this course!
Chemistry is going to be a hard class, but Dr. Boyd made it a lot easier. She really cares about her students and she wants to help as much as possible. ask questions when you're confused and stay caught up! Dr. Boyd is a gem and i actually enjoyed chemistry because of her.
Dr. Boyd is the single best instructor I have ever had the privilege of taking a class with. She conducts the best lectures, is extremely caring, and is always willing to help students do their best. I 100% recommend taking any chemistry class with her. As long as you are willing to put in the work you will do well in her classes.
all around a great professor but the class is extremely content-heavy
Dr. Boyd is a wonderful professor, definitely one of the best. I was nervous about taking chemistry, but she made it easy to understand, was super accessible, and was all around great. I loved her class and I honestly wish I had to take more chemistry than just one semester.
She was an amazing professor but her class is very difficult.
To start with, Dr. Boyd is an angel. She is one of the most caring professors I have ever had, and even cared enough to remember my name! She truly wants you to succeed and gives multiple extra credit opportunities. Chem is gonna be hard no matter what, but she posts extra lectures going in-depth on difficult topics and she also holds office hours.
Dr. Boyd is amazing, sweet, and very knowledgeable. Her lectures went over practice problems and main concepts that were interesting and super helpful to understanding homework and tests. She provides so many helpful resources for her students, old exams, workshops, mini sessions. This is a hard class, but Dr. Boyd gives all the tools to succeed.
Dr. Boyd is amazing, I just received my final grade and came straight here to say that. She's so sweet and kind and wants you to do well. Out of everyone, she is the best chemistry teacher in the department. HOWEVER the class itself is so hard, if you have to take it she's the best option for sure but if you don't have to take it please don't.
Dr. Boyd is such a great person. I really struggled in this class because of the content but she really helped me out. Im just thankful I passed (barely) and dont have to take this class again.
Dr Boyd is the best. Chem is hard but she makes it bearable. Her exams are very fair and very similar to the problems she works in class. She gives you the previous year's exam to practice with before your exam which is so helpful. Cannot say enough good things about her. Such a queen, love her.
Dr. Boyd is a very nice professor and interacts with the class which helps with learning. She tries her best to answer questions. You will have to be quick when taking notes and take advantage of the resources and study sessions she provides. If you understand the ideas and processes she shows, exams and quizzes will be easy.
I loved her. She prepared us well for tests; gave us so many study resources. Her lectures were easy to understand. This course was definitely not easy but as long as you do the homework, all the provided workshops and practice tests, and attend SI you will do well. She is so sweet and always willing to help.
Dr. Boyd is so sweet, she explains material well and always makes sure she answers your question to your satisfaction! Emailed me to congratulate me on the final, great woman and professor!
Shes amazing and super helpful!
Best professor I've had. Gives great lectures and has so many resources for exams. Prepares you well. Go to class and use all the resources she gives you and you will do well.
Dr. Boyd is the most caring and respectful professor I have had so far. She actually cares how well her students do and wants to see them succeed. This definitely isn't an easy course but if you pay attention and actually try, you will do well. She gives you a lot of materials to prepare you for the exams and they are very helpful.
Dr. Boyd is the sweetest professor I have ever met. She gives multiple opportunities for extra help (SI, Workshops, mini sessions, office hours) and she gives extra credit opportunities. Although chemistry is hard, Dr. Boyd tries her hardest to make it easier to understand. If you have the choice to take her, DO IT!!
She moves pretty quickly when giving chapter information, but if you stop and ask her questions she takes time to explain a certain concept and makes sure that you understand it.
Dr.Boyd moves quickly in her lectures but gives so many resources if you do fall behind such as her mini sessions, office hours, SI, etc. This class definitely is challenging, and considered a weed-out class. However, if you keep your homework grade high, do the clicker questions in class, take notes and use the resources it is doable!
I loved Dr. Boyd. I had her for 102 and 112. The courses are a lot of material and new concepts but she does an excellent job of breaking it down into manageable pieces. The class is hard, but if you show up, use the available textbook and take advantage of all of the workshops and supplemental instruction she makes available you'll be fine.
I LOVE Dr. Boyd! After learning her testing and lecture style, my success was remarkable. This class requires a good bit of work and studying outside of class. She presents the information in lecture, it is up to you to comprehed and practice the class topics in order to be successful. After learning the ropes, my second class with her was easier!
Dr. Boyd is a great chemistry teacher. The class is hard but she gives a lot of options for help outside of class.
She is a great teacher who is 100% willing to help you if you are struggling, she is very kind and gives great lectures. There are clicker questions in class so lectures are mandatory but she does post videos of each lecture in case you have to miss them. If you do all the review material you will do well on the exams.
This course is difficult, but if you go to class and do the homework, she prepares you enough for the exams. You have to study, but Dr.Boyd will help you with anything. She is such a great instructor but also so kind and caring. She wants everyone to succeed and tries her best to ensure that we do. I would recommend her 100%.
Shes very nice. She is really quick and fast when giving lectures. So be prepared.
She is an amazing teacher and offers so many resources. You will not pass the class if you do not study!!
Dr. Boyd is the best professor that I have had. She is so nice and extreamly knowlageble. She has amazing lectures and take notes alongside of you so that you know what is important. She is very timely and organized. She wants her students to suceed and will help you. You do have to put work in to do well but she gives plenty of recources.
I LOVE Dr. Boyd. She explains everything very well and takes the time to answer your questions during and after lecture. It is important to attend your TA's sessions, though. Don't cram and practice problems are key!
I took Dr. Boyd for chem 102 and am now taking chem 112 with her again. I got a C last semester but it was completely my fault because I neglected to actually put in the work. If I had, I would have surely passed with an A. The practice exams are the same formatting as the exams you'll take! 10/10 recommend!
Real easy going, has a sense of humor and can take a joke. Classes are relaxed. If you have any questions Heather is always willing to help. She offers after school tutoring.
I LOVE HER! The material is hard but she gives so many resources. She wants you to succeed!! If you put in effort and do the work you will get an A in the class. Chemistry is a hard subject but she explains things so well!! So many practice problems and exam review materials! She's the best!!
Dr. Boyd is an amazing, caring, and involved professor. Seeing her bright face in lecture made learning chemistry a little less distressing.
Boyd is one of the best chem profs out there. She is understanding about rough semesters and is willing to help even with issues in lab. Her lectures can be fast paced at times but are easily understood. Willing to give extensions on hw if you need them, same goes with the quizzes (lowest quiz is dropped)
Dr. Boyd is an amazing professor and took her for both Chem 102 and Chem 112. The course itself is hard but she makes it as doable as possible. She responds right away to emails and is willing to work with you through anything. Couldn't imagine taking a different professor for chem and going to miss her next semester.
Dr Boyd is a great professor who understands the material she is teaching. I am taking Chem 112 with her again this semester because of how much I liked her in the fall. I would recommend looking at previous exams and going to as many SI sessions as you can!
Dr. Boyd was a genuinely kind professor and you can tell she really cares about her students. I ended up withdrawing from this course after the third exam because I changed majors and no longer needed this course, and if I had stuck it out and completed this course I am not sure that I would have passed. Extremely test heavy and extremely difficult
Took her for both 102 and 112! The class is difficult but her lectures make it doable, she's always accessible and obviously cares about her students! As long as you stay on top of work and go to class, it's fairly easy to make a good grade. Definitely the best chem prof here!
Dr. Boyd is such an amazing professor. She gives so many resources for every single exam so as long as you are using the resources you will breeze through her class!
I took Dr. Boyd for Chem 102 and 112 and she was great! Chemistry and organic chem are hard subjects and require lots of work and studying, but she gives so many resources to help you practice and extra credit. Be prepared to work hard but know that you are in good hands with Dr. Boyd!
She uses clicker questions as a way to track attendance, but is honestly great at teaching Chemistry! Homework was never posted too early, and I felt I could actually finish and study for her class. She posts her power points, and notes she's taken on her slides from lecture. She also makes diagrams, which I always appreciated. Definitely my fave!
Listen, she rocks climbs. If you know you know... But in all seriousness she's really caring and her passion makes you want to succeed.
I love Dr. Boyd. I took her for Chem 102. Great lectures and, a great teaching style. The exams always have extra points built in. Also, if you email her she will respond typically within MINUTES. She has a great personality and posts a TON of resources. If you are failing Dr. Boyd's class, you are doing something very wrong.
I hate chemistry, and was scared to take it because I heard all the professors were horrible. Dr. Boyd, however, was a very good professor and made sure everyone understood what was going on by working out practice problems. She also made sure to highlight resources everyone could use.
Dr.Boyd is the best!! Chemistry is not an easy subject but her lectures were super helpful! She truly wants her students to succeed. She has a bunch of extra credit opportunities and provides great resources for studying.
I loved Dr. Boyd! I was super nervous going into this class but her lectures are amazing and I would highly recommend taking notes before class so you can listen to what she says. She gives lots of review for tests and is super enjoyable as a professor!
She cracks me up. So kind and gives helpful lectures. Wish I could take her for every Chemistry class.
Dr. Boyd was an exceptional and approachable professor. She is great at explaining material and was great about trying her best to pass her students. She provides lots of extra credit/tutoring to help students bring up their grades. Chem is a hard class to understand, and she can sometimes go fast in lecture, but overall, she's great.
Boyd was amazing and I am planning on taking another chemistry course taught by her next semester! Tests are hard, but extra credit is offered on homework. Graded on tests, quizzes, and homework, but homework isnt too bad. Overall great person to learn from and makes chemistry easier to understand.
Great professor for a difficult subject in a difficult department at UTK. Dr. Boyd was always enthusiastic about the material and understood that Chem isn't easy, and made it very clear where to get help and exactly what we should study for the exam. I will say though, if you miss even one class, you'll be very behind because the course moves fast.
Dr. Boyd was my favorite professor this semester! Chem 102 is a difficult class, but she gives so many resources to help us further our understanding. She also provides office hours and is very helpful. The class doesn't have much homework, but our grade is pretty test heavy. She also uses clicker questions for attendance! Definitely recommend her!
If you're going to take Chem 122, then you'll want to take it with Dr. Boyd. The chem department is not good at UTK but Dr. Boyd makes it as easy as possible. There is a ton of extra credit and she gives really good lectures. Attendance is taken with clicker questions, but the questions are graded on participation not accuracy. She's the best.
I absolutely love Dr. Boyd and would take her again if I could. The class can be difficult, and the lectures are fast paced, but that is necessary to get all the topics in. Dr. Boyd is super understanding and cares for her students. She does a great job at explaining all the topics and making sure to answer questions in the lectures as well.
I absolutely loved Dr. Boyd! She goes pretty fast during lectures but it's understandable because there's so much information to get through. She provides so many extra resources like review videos and practice worksheets that definitely helped me with the concepts. She also gives lots of opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester!
She was a great professor overall. She teaches SO FAST. If you lose attention for 10 seconds it feels like you just missed an entire unit. As long as you study and put in effort, you will pass this class. Exams are the majority of your grade so you definitely study very hard before them.
Loved Professor Boyd. She is very knowledgeable in her subject and truly wants her students to succeed. She provides many extra credit opportunities and takes clicker questions (attendance) as an easy grade booster. Completely recommend her!
Dr. Boyd was amazing! She did a great job making the concepts as easy to understand as possible. Homework assignments can be long, just don't wait until the last minute to do them. Quizzes are online and open resource, but there are not many of them. Do the extra credit and go to class!
She was very organized in class, and as long as you pay attention in lectures and review periodically outside of class then you should be fine.
Best science professor I have ever had. The class material is very hard but I went to her office hours and she helped me understand the material so much better. Take her over any other chem teacher. She really cares about your success in the course.
Chemistry is going to be difficult, but Dr. Boyd does her absolute best to explain things clearly. She offers so much resources and is always willing to help. You do need to put in work outside of class to practice. I ended up really enjoying chemistry with her and definitely recommend! She does go fast so be prepared to keep up.
She gives a lot of practice problems for students to practice for exams, you just need to practice a lot to ace the exam. She's also a funny and amazing professor. It's easy to understand the lecture and gives a lot of materials to study for exams. Definitely would take her again.
I had to take CHEM102 twice, in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024. The first time, I had Koubek. I hate him. Boyd is way better. You HAVE to go to class for participation points, but she posts the material after lectures. Boyd is way more understanding. I have been sick a few times, and she'll consider half credit participation. I LOVE HER.
I absolutely hate the subject but I love Mrs. Boyd. This is my second time taking chem and I wish I would have had her first. She actually writes notes with you and only has you write down the important topics and formulas you need to know. She is so sweet and is enthusiastic about teaching chemistry.
Dr. Boyd is definitely the best chem prof here, but if you do not have a background in chem this class will be difficult. I went to her office every day and still got a C in the class. During office hours she will also tell you she will round your grade and curve the exams but when you go to class she tells the class she does not round or curve.
I would say she is the best in the General Chemistry department. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students and attempts to make personal connections. The Chemistry department itself is honestly just bad and it isn't her fault that the material and coursework is complicated. Just go to class and listen during lectures. Go to office hours!
My queen!!! I was so scared to take Chem 112 but professor Boyd did a really good job teaching this class. She is so cute and fun. The material is really hard so you have to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she is super helpful and has a lot of practice material. Also the exams were always wayyyyy easier than the reviews in my opinion
Dr.Boyd is one of the best professors at UT and by far the best chemistry professor. She cares about the success on her students and makes it easy to do good in the class in you put in a little work. Provides a ton of resources such as workshops and other worksheets for practice. I highly recommend taking her if you can!!!
With no background of chem this class is pretty difficult, low averages on tests, but Prof Boyd is probably one of the best chem teachers for this course. She knows what she is doing and is very helpful if you reach out. It just involves a lot of time and effort. Do not skip any of her lectures or you will be lost. Plus attendance is mandatory.
Boyd is one of the best chem professors available. Chemistry is a very difficult subject, but she explains topics well and provides a ton of study resources outside of class. Several extra credit opportunities too. Going to class is really important for lecture as well as clicker points. Overall I highly recommend her to anyone taking chemistry!
Boyd was amazing. It took time to adjust to her teaching style, but she simplifies things for students. She dropped the lowest scores, and my grades improved throughout the course. She ends class early if we struggle and is understanding yet stern. Ensure assignments are completed on time, as she won't reopen them, but she provides good notice.
Love the professor! Funny and not aloof.
Professor Boyd is one of the best chem teachers around. The class is tough, but she's super helpful and provides tons of great study resources like unstuckstudy ai. Just make sure to stay engaged, attend lectures, and use all the tools she offers to succeed.
While Chem 122 is difficult, Dr. Boyd is very kind and helpful. She does her best to help every student and is understanding when you're sick/does not count it against you. Her lectures move at a fast pace, but she uploads her notes for you to review and answers student's questions.
I had Dr. Boyd for Chem 102 and Chem 112 and she is simply amazing. She is funny, understanding, and a great professor. I generally struggle with chemistry but she manages to make learning general chem and orgo feasible. She provides so many extra study materials and is simply the best. I would definitely recommend anyone to take her classes.
Chemistry is a difficult class, but Boyd is 100% the best professor you can take. She is very helpful in her office hours, and she is great at answering questions. Exams are difficult, and you really need to study. She gives as much extra credit as the department allows. She is very bubbly which makes it easy to pay attention in lecture.
Class itself is hard and has a lot of info but she is a great teacher and very sweet
Class itself has lots of info but she is really sweet
Professor is sweet and helpful, probably the best option for Chem 102. However, content is difficult and she moves pretty fast, doesn't fully explain many of the course concepts. Your grade will mostly rely on exam scores.
Dr. Boyd made a challenging class easy to follow and made good grades attainable. There is only one homework assignment per chapter (and only 9 chapters). Quizzes are open note open everything and are taken at home. Clicker questions for credit but she gives the answer before closing them. Shes very nice, accessible, and approachable. Take her!!!!!
Can't say enough about Boyd. She is the best. I hate chemistry and it's not her fault. The department is tough and it is a tough subject. You have to learn how to study and how to devote time to chemistry. Take good notes, don't miss class, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS for one on one. I can't say everything good about her because of the limit on here.
Since chemistry is such a difficult subject she does the absolute best she can when teaching the content. If you miss a lecture or get behind it is very difficult to play catch up so don't get behind. She is super caring and does everything in her power so you can succeed.
Dr. Boyd is a great professor and she cares about the sucess of her students. If you actually show up to lecture and take the notes that she gives you will succeed in this course. Tests are difficult but if you study you'll be fine.
I loved this professor. She would take notes with us and worked out examples so we could see the process. She doesn't overload us with work, and it is clear that she wants us to succeed. She taught very well and was crucial to my success in the course. I definitely recommend this professor and she made Chemistry much more enjoyable.
She's the best professor in the chemistry department. There are loads of opportunities to get extra credit and she drops the lowest quiz grades. Take Dr. Boyd!!
Avoid taking Chem at UT, but if you have to, take it with this professor. She is the nicest out of all of the professors within the department, very tech-savvy, and is accessible outside of class. Her class is well-organized and she makes her own practice/study resources for students. Many extra credit opportunities! Sad she doesn't teach 132 :(
I second the person that said avoid taking chem at UT if you can. But if u must, Dr. Boyd is a great option. Chem in general is a very hard topic to grasp, but she made it as digestible as possible. Class moves VERY fast, and even if you study a lot for exams you may fail. Most of my grievances lie with the chem department at UT rather than Boyd
Chemistry is a difficult class, with a lot of material to learn. Dr. Boyd does an amazing job of explaining concepts, and she posts all of her notes on canvas. She is very approachable and accessible. Your lowest exam score is dropped if your final is higher. However, you will likely need to put in the personal work outside of class time.
Dr. Boyd was incredible. Chemistry can be challenging but she provides you with SO MANY resources to use to understand the material. She is very approachable and truly wants you to understand. Lectures are helpful, and she uses clicker points for participation. If you need chemistry, take her.
Dr. Boyd is by far the best professor you could take for Chem 122. She is bubbly, energetic, and incredibly kind. She makes a large lecture hall feel like a small classroom and takes the time to hand write notes with you during each class. You can tell she has a genuine passion for ensuring the success of her students in a class that is difficult.
She is a great professor but the course itself is hard. She does a good job explaining material in her lectures and is easily accessible outside of classes.
Dr. Boyd was an amazing professor! Chemistry in general is a difficult course, but Dr. Boyd explained the content in a way that made it easy to understand. She also spent 50 minutes during the class before an exam to go over material that we were going to be tested on, which was super helpful. As long as you study, you should do well in the class.
Dr. Boyd is actually such a good professor. If you attend class, pay attention, and do the homework, there is really no reason why you should not finish with an A- or A. The exams are tough, and you need to begin studying days in advance, but she gives you everything you need to succeed. Take her class.
Chemistry has always been hard for me, but Dr. Boyd is a great professor who wants her students to succeed. Clicker questions for attendance. Fairly long homework, but actually doing it will help you understand. Exams were rough but final replaces lowest. Didn't like the way she worked out some problems, but googling alternative ways helped plenty.
She's the best there is for a fast-paced chemistry class. She moved through the content fast sometimes and sometimes only said super important things for exams maybe once, but that's also just the nature of the course. I'm glad I took her class over any of the other professors!
Dr Boyd is the goat of all gen chem teachers. She cares so much about her students and it shows. The class is hard, SO DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, A 5 YR OLD CAN DO IT. Other than that, please study hard for exam 1. Most students think exam 1 is going to be easy, and its not.
I enjoy Prof. Boyd. She was always very helpful and her style of teaching (writing down notes with us as opposed to reading word for word off slides) worked for me. Due dates were predictable and she always reminded us. Used clickers but it was hard to get one wrong if you attended. Overall, loved her for chem 122, sad she doesn't teach 132
Dr.Boyd was great, but do not take chemistry unless you have to. Lots of extra credit, the final replaces the lowest, and Dr.Boyd is great at explaining concepts. Passing chem is easy, but if you want a good grade, be ready to put in some elbow grease.
There are practically no grades in this class other than the exams. Dr. Boyd is the best of the chem professors that I know of, but I still was vaguely confused for most of the semester. Exams are far too long for the time period given, and are difficult to finish on time. Study materials given for exams are not sufficient.
She is a great person, but last year I took her class, and it was rough. If you have her main thing is learning how to use the website. My first two weeks I had no idea how to work it and I got missing homework grades, which tanked my grade.
Dr. Boyd is the best Chem 122 prof. offered. She is very passionate about chemistry and that makes it more enjoyable. However, the class its self is quite difficult due to the testing material. The first test we had was horrible because the content was totally different than what everyone had practiced.
She is a great professor, very kind and personable. I took IB Chem and Advanced Honors Chem in H.S. so this class wasn't too hard. However, if it's your first time and you never took those types of classes, then you will spend a little more time with it. But the class wasnt hard and she does a lot of examples. Good at notes. Also, knows her stuff.
I enjoyed Professor Boyd's teaching style since there were a lot of practice clicker questions during the classes and she posted practice workshops and exams. Chemistry is a very exam heavy class, but this was balanced out a little by some extra credit opportunities and a relatively light homework load.
I would recommend Professor Boyd for anyone taking gen chem 1. She is super bubbly and you can tell she is genuinely excited to teach. The material in the class is about the same difficulty as high-school chemistry and if you pay attention you will do well. There isn't a ton of homework and every exam she does a review day the day of.
Dr. Boyd is still one of my favorite professors I've had at UT. You can tell she cares and is excited to teach. She would post "mini sessions" where she would re-teach harder topics and give us extra practice with them, which is something I wish more professors would do.
She's a really good professor. I was worried because I haven't taken chem since sophomore year but you start with a review unit which helps refresh your memory. She's nice and does want her students to succeed.
Professor Boyd is an amazing teacher. I retook chemistry with her after not receiving the credit beforehand with Koubek. Her teaching style is a lot easier to understand and she knows how difficult the exams can be, so she offers great study tools and review.
I enjoyed Prof Boyd for Inorganic - She is very supportive. The hw/quizzes/exams won't say the reason answers are marked wrong so you have to ask. Office hours are excellent. Others in class said they sometimes didn't get her explanations, but I think the lectures just moved a bit fast - all the info was in the notes/ppts she posted after class.
Super sweet and a great teacher. Teaches things well and will help if you're confused and need further explanations. Class was super easy if you're typically good at math or high school chem but if not you'll still be okay. Lots of provided study materials that help with tests
prof. boyd is a great professor, although chemistry is a tough course. be aware of extra credit points and complete them when you can.
Very nice, made chemistry much more digestible. Has a great Canvas page with lots of extra resources.
Chemistry is a hard course, there's no doubt, but Prof. Boyd is objectively a good teacher. The content is naturally difficult, but she provides as many resources/extra credit opportunities as are necessary. She clearly cares a lot about her students! She's great!
Dr Boyd is a really great professor. She provides great resources for extra help on canvas. Make sure to do all extra credit at beginning of year, literally saved my grade. I liked that she did notes with us instead of just reading off slides. Exams are tough (especially ex1), so you need to start studying early and actually try on the homework.
Dr. Boyd is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. She provides so many resources and a good amount of extra credit and she clearly wants her students to succeed. Def attend the lectures as she thoroughly explains the content and makes it a lot easier to understand. Uses clicker questions for participation
She's a kind, understanding professor who truly wants students to succeed. Lectures are clear and posted after class. Exams once a month with plenty of prep resources and SI sessions. Minimal homework—just brief online chapter assignments. Great support and teaching!
She knows what she's talking about but the way she conveys it in class is too fast for a lot of people to keep up, and it skips around a bit. Make sure you can write really fast if you want notes in class. I learned most of the information from this course by either going to SI or watching her review videos posted to canvas, not in class.
She's one of the nicest professors ever. That being said I don't think she's a good teacher. She obviously knows what she's talking about but she's so passionate about the topic she ends up speaking instead of teaching. You won't fail the class if you take her but there's a good chance you'll learn more of the material from the SI sessions.
Very kind and cares about her students. Clearly cares about the material. Lectures are well-paced. Not her fault, but the tests were 10x harder than anything ever taught in class. Wish the evil chem department here had more people like Dr Boyd.
TAKE BOYD! Any problem I had in chemistry was the fault whoever the freak writes the exams. Chem almost had me transfer because I was so frustrated. The only people I heard do good on them had taken AP Chem. My school is rural, so this was never an option. The only thing that kept me sane was her lectures, bc she does her best in a terrible dept!
Dr. Boyd has been one of my best professors. She truly cares about students' understanding and success. After taking AP Chemistry, I found this course very manageable. She offers 5 bonus points on every exam, plenty of extra credit, and even posts last year's exams as a helpful study resource. I wish I could take her for every class!!
SHE IS GREAT! I had little to no knowledge of chemistry but in her lectures I learned so much. Definitely take notes, maybe even record her talking and take notes later. She knows exactly what she's talking about. Dr. Boyd cares about how we do. Whenever I went to her office hours she was so excited I was there. Definitely go to her office hours.
Dr Boyd is actually the best professor ever. Chemistry is a hard course and it is difficult material for some, however Dr Boyd knows what she is talking about and just be prepared to study. She is so sweet and provides feedback and extra materials to study for exams. Even though it was my hardest class, she was my favorite professor!
She is a great teacher, and always willing to help. Exams are very hard in the class and often times make you want to drop it. Take her if possible
Dr. Boyd is the goat.
I would 100% recommend taking Dr. Boyd if given the chance! The chemistry department here at UTK is notoriously hard, and she makes this class very doable. This class is very content-heavy and application-based, but she offers tons of study materials and extra resources, which are very helpful. Also, make sure to go to SI sessions!!
The class itself is difficult, especially if you don't have a solid chem background, but she is the best professor you could pick for this class. She offers extra credit and her lectures are good, just very fast paced. Def recommend her, but be prepared to lock in during lectures and study a ton. Also, go to SI Sessions (they'll save your grade!)
She loves chemistry and is easy to understand. Go to office hours if you need help with anything! This class is just really difficult no matter who you are taking it with.
For a subject I don't generally enjoy she did a great job helping me understand chemistry. She taught with clear passion for the subject, and if I had to take any more chemistry courses I would easily want to have her again.
The material is very difficult, but Dr. Boyd makes it so easy to understand. She provides many review resources and is always available via office hours and email.
Dr. Boyd is fantastic! She genuinely cares about how you do and is very accessible via email. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! These saved me and she is very helpful and happy you are there. Be sure to attend class and take notes. Chem 102 was not as difficult as everyone said it would be. Tests are slightly difficult but do practice exam and go to SI.
Amazing teacher. Very helpful when it comes to understanding the material if you're struggling. Test heavy, but if you pay attention in class and go to SI/TA sesstions you'll be fine. Very caring teacher.
Dr. Boyd cares for all her students and wants them to succeed. Chem is typically tough for most students due to the departmental exams, however, Dr. Boyd has amazing in depth lectures, quality practice exams and workshops, and is quick responding to emails. Also, she gives out extra credit that can raise your final grade by 3 or so average points
Professor Boyd is a great professor, and is only hurt by the fact that her class is really hard. She has very in depth slides that she posts, and while she reads very fast she walks around during lectures to help out on practice problems. Overall, great professor, hard course.
Dr. Boyd made every student feel cared for during lectures with an enthusiastic attitude. As diffiicult as the course is, due to the lecture heavy, fast paced workload, tests seemed fair and extra credit adjustments were offered. Attending office hours are recommendable, as each lecture covers a broad amount of material.
Pick a religion you like and start praying.
Good luck you got to pray a lot in Chemistry. She does pretty well though with the subject and TN voice helps. Make sure you're spending time to actually understand the work otherwise good luck.
