A fair teacher. She works with you as long as you work with her in exchange. I have become a better writer because of her.
She is a pain but overall easy class. wouldnt recommend her though honesty. She is just annoying
Professor Brody is overall a very good professor. She has made the writing process extremely easy to get down and has given me tools I use on papers for all of my classes. The class is heavy on group work, but it's all for the sake of being a better writer.
Very Helpful
Treats students like children, especially when asking questions. She definitely knows her material. Must show up and participate to do well.
Brody, is out going and passionate about english. But she does talk to us like were children not young adults. But over all she's helpful, definitely attend office hours.
Heather Brody definitely has all the qualities of a good teacher but her voice is annoying and she talks to you like you're a child. She's nice though. I struggled because I never went to class and missed alot of participation points (it hurts your grade pretty badly) and she wants things done a certain way which doesn't let you be creative.
Switch when you can
We wrote 3 papers throughout the semester. She is very clear as to what should be in your paper and gives you essay examples which really help. She is very nice and aproachable. It is very easy to pass this class if you show up and actually participate in the class discussions.
If you're looking for an easy A, then don't bother. If you truly want to learn how to write good papers though, Professor Brody will turn you into an academic writer in a semester. She does tend to be a little merciless with grades, but she's more than willing to help you get it right. I really came to appreciate her in the long run.
Having her at 7AM, this was a difficult class. Prof. Brody constantly sounded like she was talking to a group of young children instead of a class of college students. She provided help when necessary. Office hours are a must. She provides great feedback. Be ready for a lot of group work.
Just eww. Have not felt this way since 2nd grade. Treats students like little kids in how she addresses us. Tries hard but I'd been better off doing online. Never will take classes from her again.
Boring lectures but the class is easy.
Professor Brody was the one english teacher I had but did not really care for. She will give you help but when you ask a specific question she will not give you a specific answer. She just beats around the bush to answer of your question until you really can not figure it out on your own. Her talking forever is one thing I could not stand ever.
Talked way to much
Very good at communication, but the class was super boring. Not alot of creativity, just lectures, classwork and homework. very strict
Professor Brody is very clear cut about what she wants in essays and is very helpful in class as she takes time in class to answer questions and provide clarity. Her class, though long and sometimes dry helped me become a better writing.
Professor Brody, although clear in her expectations of students, was not a great teacher. Her lectures can be very long and boring and her voice would often get on my nerves. I had a hard time making myself go to this class. She was not at all interesting, however, you can do well if you put in the effort and follow all of her instructions.
She was awesome! Super helpful. She always provided the lecture slides and provided all you need to write good papers that will meet her expectations. ALWAYS follow the instructions she gives, they are there for a reason.
I'm a Senior at GCU taking this class to fill a credit requirement. I consider myself to be a good writer and thought this class would be a good fit. Heather is the most condescending, long-winded person I've ever listened to. Participation is built around pleasing her ego, assignments are granular, and you'll wish you were deaf experiencing it all
Professor Brody is a very sweet person except when it comes to actually teaching she's awful. She is a very hard grader, boring lecturer, and VERY unclear when it comes to papers because she will just expect you to know what to type and most of the time you will be wrong. You have to basically live in her office doing meetings if you want to pass.
I loved Professor Brody's class and I learned so much in her class. She always had office hours and if you ever need help she was ready to help you. She was a great teacher but the class was definitely a hard one, she challenges you. I highly recommend her and go to her office hours.
She's there to help you with anything that you need help with.
Make sure you don't skip class
This professor has caused me to lose any love of English and writing. She talks down to students and avoids answering direct questions , and is the least open/understandable professor I have ever met. There is a line that is pushing your students and just calling out nonexistent details just to ding them on points, and she has crossed it.
Professor Brody is tough to say the least. The first paper she assigned she did not explain well what so ever and barely offered any help. Attendance is MANDATORY! All I have to say is GOOD LUCK.
This teacher has made this class a drag and not fun at all. She talks down her students and is very degrading. She does not offer any help, and if you ask her, she makes you feel as if you are doing everything wrong. She makes the class way harder then it needs to be. One time she said to our class, "my other classes are better then you guys."
Professor Brody made this course much more difficult than it needed to be. Participation points made up nearly 20% of our grades and there was an instance where she would not accept my doctors note for missing class. It feels like no matter what you answer in her class, you are wrong. She's a bit confusing on what she expects in her papers as well.
Professor Brody is amazing, as an instructor. Her instructions only seem confusing because she wants you to actually develop critical thinking skills. What you do in the class is only what's necessary. ! I do admit that sometimes it feels as if she's talking down to you when answering questions. I think she only does that to make you think harder.
Her lectures may seem boring but they are super helpful. If you do the work in class you do not have homework. Overall easy class and great professor. I am now a junior and I ALWAYS reference her powerpoints so save them while you can!!
This professor had a super annoying voice and was very close minded.
She talks to you like you are 5 and assumes you know nothing about writing. All her assignments have templets to follow, sometimes down to the word, which can be nice if you are feeling lazy, but frustrating if you don't write the exact way she does. If it does not match the outline IT IS WRONG! Pretty sure thats not how writing works.
Brody was a good professor, but I was on her good side. I never had an issue with her and always felt liked she liked me. I got an A and I felt like she was very clear and easy to understand.
She helps you through each step of your essay. Class is boring but you have to go for participation credit.
Heather Brody is a good teacher if you ask for her help. If not, she assumes you don't know a single thing about writing and is almost deragatory in how she speaks to you ("This stuff is REALLY hard, guys.", etc.). As an English major, she made me not like English class, and that bothered me.
She gives everything needed to do well in the class and her power points are extremely helpful and not only for her class but other classes too and if all directions for essays are followed you will do well!
She reads right off the slides, and overall just grades insanely hard on the few papers you have to write, take another prof. there are better ones at this school.
I felt like I was in high school taking this class- in a bad way. She treats you like children. Seriously don't take this class if you want to challenge yourself in college. It was so easy I didn't even take it seriously. Just save yourself. The papers are so dumb.
Professor Brody is an average professor. Her classes are all lecture and very little discussion time. Don't go into class expecting excitement or fun. She does have a habit of talking down to her students, but I don't believe she has malicious intent. The essays, however, are easy to write and students are given clear instructions.
Fantastic
I felt like we weren't treated like college students, more like we were in elementary school sometimes. She posts all of her lecture notes online and they're very detailed but she is sometimes unclear while grading. She definitely expects you to do everything you can before asking her for help.
Lectures the entire length of the class period. Over explains things
I hated this class. Every time I answered during lecture or asked a question privately she made me feel dumb about everything I said. I have a huge passion for writing and she made me absolutely despise it. She made English 106 harder than it had to be. Lots of my friends in other classes seemed as though their classes were 10x easier.
She is a nice person but a horrible professor. Classes are very lecture heavy and makes students feel like they are in elementary school and have no understandings of anything to do with writing. I went in for extra help for each paper that was due, she says it looks good but then I end up with a low B on every paper.
I see all these low scores on her and I can understand why. Her tone sometimes feels like she condescending but she really isn't. She just wants her students to succeed and wants to make it clear on how it should be done. Most students think they know what they are doing but they truly need help. Brody tries to redirect students the right way.
This lady should be teaching small children the way she speaks to you, I found myself sitting in the back and ignoring everything half way through the semester which I don't usually do. I think Heather Brody has an attitude problem, shes nice but very condescending- I would get great feedback but then get C's on papers..
Despite what other ratings may say, I think Brody is a solid choice for English. She is extremely clear of what she expects for her papers and challenges you to become a better writer. If you make an effort to show you care about your grade, she will be a huge help for you. She genuinely cares for her students!
I got an A in her class but it wasn't easy. You have to work hard if you want a good grade. Her teaching style isn't my favorite. Super lecture heavy. She means well but comes off rude when you ask her questions and can make you feel dumb. Wouldn't take her class again.
This class is nothing but very rude I was having a hard time in my casual chain and she ends up telling me you're going to fail this class. She doesn't help she always ignore me when I'm trying to ask her a question. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
Peer reviews will kill your grade to no return if you choose to not do them. Be sure to follow every instruction out of her mouth or she will give you a zero. The class is generally easy, make sure to show up to class. The only homework given is an essay every couple weeks. If you ask her a question she WILL make you feel stupid, so DON'T!
Shes a real gem, easy class. A little confusing sometimes when it comes to grading but its clear she wants you to pass. Very thoughtful and helpful. Really teach for the students understanding. Go to class, even though she gives you the slides. Make sure to do every assignment because theres only a few.
Heather Brody is loud, but totally caring. She wants to see you succeed and often gives you the tools to do so. She gives awesome slides that will help you get a good grade on your papers that you must write, and she also gives guides on how to do APA citations, and how to format your paper correctly.
I loved her from the start, easy class and she gives you slides to help with your essays. best teacher hands down. yes she can be loud at times but you'll get used to it and peer reviews are fun and she really does care about her students. PSA go to all the time even if she says not too. it will bless your life.
Professor Brody is my favorite professor I have had. She truly cares about her students and wants you to succeed. Go to her office hours and truly get to know her, she is amazing. The only reason people don't like her is because they show no effort. 100% recommend her!!!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. She takes the time for you to succeed, but you need to reach out to her and take all of the resources she gives you. I haven't always been good at english and I learned so much from her. Favorite teacher and great to have if you make the time.
The only grades in for this class are participation for random weeks, and our 3 papers overall. If you do bad on a paper, good luck getting your grade back up because you literally don't do anything else in the class. Professor Brody makes you feel dumb... if you ask a question she will rip your ideas apart without helping explain the concept to u.
Ohhh Heather Brody... I am currently sitting in this class surrounded by other students throwing in similar opinions with angry eyes begging to say something. This professor enjoys to make her students feel super retarded when they need to ask a question. If you fail one of the THREE assignments she has throughout the year... SEE YA!
wants to see her students become better writers. Is available to help during her office hours. posts the powerpoint slides that are discussed in class as a tool when it comes to writing papers. When it came to choosing a topic for the final paper, I had a few ideas written down, she helped me narrow it down.
First of all, I got a 98 in this class. She is a great professor, and she sets you up to succeed, only reason kids give her bad ratings is because don't try or use all the tools she gives you. She gives you multiple opportunities to pass and to turn in things that you haven't, even if you don't do it then she still gives you a chance!!
Participation is a big deal in Brody's class, but I often found her classes to be enjoyable and worth going to. She also has an extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester if your grade isn't quite where it needs to be.
I love her, I got a 99% almost a 100%. She gives you extra credit all the time, gives you everything needed down to the tee. Her slides I still use to help write essays. BEST teacher I have ever had. The bad ratings there are is due to the fact that they don't try. She will do anything for her students. I always sucked at English and she helped me!
Great teacher, but she is a really tough grader. I came into the class as a terrible writer and I have improved a lot since her class. She's definitely good at drilling references and format into your head so you'll never forget it. The only downside is that she takes off A LOT of points in essays for tiny mistakes, which dropped my grade and gpa.
Hands down one of the best professors ever! I went into her class scared because I am not the best writer. I would average C's on all of my essays in high school. However, I took advantage of office hours and her lectures and accomplished getting an A on all three of the essays with finishing the class with an A!
great at explaining the lectures and what is to be expected in a paper. very caring about her students and their grades. works with you to make sure you get at least some credit on each assignment. would recommend this class.
Great teacher, really cares about her students, gives good feedback, and helps you with your essays.
By far the most organized teacher I have ever had, if organization is important to you as a student professor Brody is definitely the way to go. She makes papers extremely clear cut and easy to understand even for those that English is not their strong suit like me.
shes really kind and cares for you.
She is such a great professor but make sure you go to her office hours for your papers.
She makes you feel stupid, tells you class on Thursdays you don't need it, but then complains not enough people go. Fail a paper, say goodbye to your grade.
Dr. Brody is a great professor who really cares for her students. She will provide slides in announcements. Slides are very helpful - how to use APA, paper checklists, requirements on the paper etc. You will definitely want to attend class. If you do getting a good grade shouldn't be to difficult. Papers are graded as expected - no surprises.
She is a good professor, just makes it pretty tough for a freshman English class. This class is an easy A if you do a ton of work outside of class. She also has a strict no electronics rules, so no working on assignments in class. In over 20 years of teaching, she has given only 2 perfect scores and she lets you know no paper is perfect.
She was a great teacher, and she really cares about your success in the class. She may come off a bit unhappy sometimes, but she truly loves what she does and wants to be able to help her students.
If you are a great writer this class is for you. All we did in this class was write essays and help classmates with them. Professor Brody is great professor and she helps you through all the steps of the essays assigned. She is very helpful in and out of the classroom.
She cares about all of her students. You will not do well in the class if you do not pay attention to the slides. She gives great feedback if you go into her office hours and ask her for help. Do not be afraid to ask questions and always pay attention in class so you can be successful! Overall, I highly recommend!
Dr. Brody was an amazing ENG105 teacher who would guide her students throughly for each essay that was assigned.
Dr. Brody's favorite way to teach is to tell students how wrong they are but give no guidance on how to get on the right path. I expressed how confused I was and was told "maybe if you realize that you are in college and aren't the smartest person here" I might succeed. I just wanted help on how to write an essay!
Shes not terrible, but she is very strict with how essays are written. If you forget to cite a paraphrase then you could be reported to GCUs dean. Once, the whole class didnt paraphrase and she threatened to report all of us to the dean for plagiarism even though she never really told us to make sure we cite after paraphrasing. Just a warning!
Most people who gave her a bad rating only did so due to the fact that they did not fully take advantage of the resources she had provided. She gives numerous templates as well as opportunities for the students to meet with her to give feedback on their papers. It was an amazing class along with an amazing professor with a goal for you to succeed.
Dr. Brody is a great professor. She engages with her students daily to make sure that they are comprehending the material she is teaching. If you are able to, get her blended class. This is where one day of class is mandatory, and the other is optional and used for course assistance. She is very knowledgable and will help in any way that she can!
Not the best instructor.
Dr. Brody was a great teacher and gave us clear directions on what to do during our 3 papers. Dr. Brody had fun with the class and wasn't too strict, but we always did productive things in class. She always gave good feedback and gave examples of how the paper should look. If you ask questions and participate, she will help you succeed.
She is amazing because she holds your hand while writing your essays. For example she gives layouts on exactly what she wants and she gives check list for your essay.
Professor Brody is a great teacher. She knows what she is talking about for both ENG-104 and ENG-106. It may not be the most interesting Gen Ed, but if you go to class, pay attention to the slides, and follow directions it is an easy class and you will do well.
Dr. Brody is an amazing professor. For each paper she made slides that had checklist and sample paragraphs as models. If she sees that you are putting in the work she will go above and beyond to help you. I would recommend to try not to miss class just because she gives vital info and explains things very well. I will definitely pick her for 106.
While in this class, I learned nothing. I felt babied throughout the semester, and all work given was busy work that did not contribute to my academic career. She put no effort into correcting students on their work, only pointing out what was wrong with it.
The only reason why I didn't get an A was because I slacked it and I procrastinate on my essays. She has different TA's that help her grade papers but overall her class was very easy and there is nothing negative about her or her class. She teaches the lessons very well and also uploads videos of lessons and it is very helpful.
Shes really nice and honestly keeps the training wheels on. She gives u very specific outlines for all the essays. She does give kinda a lot of hw but is very thorough for directions if u go to class. No tests just had 3 papers. I recommend her. I picked her for 106 again.
Does not explain directions well, she will tell you to look back at the slides. Even if you get help in your paper she at the end the prof will find anything bad with your paper to Give you a bad grade. I do not recommend to anyone.
Dr. Brody was amazing! She gives very clear outlines for papers and explains exactly what she wants from you. She will give you class time to complete parts of your paper of DQ's.
She literally gives checklist for everything you need in your essays, in order and she even gives examples that are color coded. The powerpoints were crucial this year! So, yeah if you did not go over the powerpoints, you're missing out on IMPORTANT info!
Dr. Brody was very helpful in ENG-105 and made it a lot easier. she goes step by step with you for every paper. Dr Brody and the IAs are available to proofread your papers before submitting them, but their appointments fill very fast.
Attendance for this class was not mandatory since she always posted the sides she went over in class, but I recommend going to her lectures for better clarification of what she is looking for in papers. Her PowerPoints were always helpful to use when writing papers and she would give us sample paragraphs of each essay.
She is my favorite English teacher that I have ever taken. she gave out specific guidelines on what she would require. I was able to use her guidelines and t helped me with my future English classes. she would also take her own time to meet with every student to go over our papers. I was able to fix everything and get a good grade. 10/10.
I took Dr. Brody for ENG105 and 106 and loved her both times. These courses are paper heavy and Dr. Brody's class is set up to make it hard for procrastination. Each discussion question leading up to a paper is something that will be incorporated in the final draft. Highly recommend Dr. Brody!
Dr. Brody is AMAZING! She is so kind and so helpful. I have never had a teacher that is so caring to all her students. This class requires a lot of papers, but she gives you so many resources she practically writes it for you. There is absolutely no way to fail this class. I would take any class that Dr. Brody teaches. I LOVE HER!
This professor is really inconsiderate for her students. She does give everyone the resources they need to complete an essay, but this course could easily be completed without her instruction. She has no care for her instructional assistants and everything seems to be about herself. Overall I would recommend switching to another professor.
Professor Brody would work better in a high school setting. She heavily valued participation both to answering her questions and class discussions. She gives good feedback, but is a bit intimidating because she asks you a lot at once to get you to learn. Paying attention and taking notes while applying it to papers makes it very easy to pass.
Professor Heather is nice, however, gets very off-topic and starts to talk about herself most of the time. She tends to not like people who have any type of SDS as in her first PowerPoint she says it. She is a very tough grader as even when you do the work and put effort she and her IA's will grade you very harshly. I recommend switching professors
This teacher was very good. She gives you so many powerpoints of information on how to do the essays, which is super helpful. If you actually pay attention and do the work its not a hard class. If you slack off it can be really hard to catch up. She gives us lots of time to work on essays. Overall really great teacher!
She is very difficult to listen to sometimes, her lectures take up the entire class period, and she makes attendence mandatory.
She just is not good
Heather Brody, quite possibly the worst professor I've ever had. Her biggest advice on the papers is "read the rubric", but no matter how many times you read the rubric you still won't get a good grade. She is the harshest grader and for no reason. Her critics are not helpful. They just tear down your confidence and make you feel utterly stupid.
terrible, just goes off of the powerpoints the whole class
As someone who has learning disabilities this class was hard especially with the professor. going to class was pointless since the slides would be posted in announcements anyway. the slides were hard to follow and when you needed help on anything she made you feel awful in the first place for being confused
Dr. Brody is amazing! She is very good at explaining the subject material thoroughly and gives great examples and checklists for your assignments. Your grade in this class will almost entirely depend on 3 essays, but that's how all ENG-105 classes work at GCU. If you're willing to pay attention and you actually want to learn, Dr. Brody is great.
The teacher did not have office hours. If you need help you had to schedule office hours with her IA's. The IA's did not know what they were doing and would say the wrong information. I deleted half my essay because of them and than later showed the teacher and she told me not to listen to the IA's and that they were not knowledgeable.
Dr. Brody was the first English prof I had here and I am so thankful. She is very nice and caring about her students, as long as they give her respect in return. If you go to class and pay attention you will do great and it will be easy. She gives you EVERYTHING you need and more to succeed. What you put into this class is what you get out.
Brody is one of the kindest humans you will ever meet. She really does care and try to advocate for her students in any way possible. If you miss a class, without an emergency reason, lost participation, which she was not lenient about, but she gave us clear powerpoints and rubrics to follow to make an A.
Dr. Brody is awesome. She is friendly and cares about her students. She walks you through essays and gives you everything you need to be successful, as long as you listen and pay attention. She has slides with all the information you'll ever need. She is a tough grader, however if you have been paying attention you'll be just fine.
Try to get another English 106 professor than Heather Brody. She told some of the students trying to get their topic approved that the topics weren't worth her time to read. She has no sense of humor. Any jokes make her look up from her lecture and stare you down. Her explanations make things even more confusing.
She talks down to everybody is hard to listen to and gets hung up little things on assignments. One example of this is on a paper toward the end of the year you could have your score go down a whole letter grade if the word “superbowl” was included anywhere in the essay.
When I would ask her questions for clarification, she was very demeaning and rude to students and myself. She talked a lot about things that were not necessary for the work that the class required. I found I would leave her class frustrated with her style of teaching. Her slides are very busy and overwhelming, but they do help as a checklist.
Professor Brody was alright, she lectures for a LONG time. Her PowerPoints are helpful, sometimes she can be helpful other times not so much. She doesnt require a word count on essays which is nice. Worst part is how long she talks, it gets annoying. She really cares about participation too, even if you show up she threatens to take it away.
She's very rude and definitely picks favorites in her class. If you ask for help she pretty much just makes fun of you and tears apart your essay
Won't be an easy A English class
participation is taken every day. essays were all outlined and provided exact information that needed to be included. she is always willing to work with you. some of the essays appeared to be confusing, and require a lot more detail if you want to stray from the assigned topics, so my best advice is to just choose a provided topic and it will be EZ
Not the worst but a hard grader. Must go to class, participation is needed.
My first impression of Brody was on the first day of class when me and some classmates were assigned to converse in a small group. (Which we were doing) She then came up to us and interrupted our on-topic conversation to let us know that we will be losing participation for the day, and that we should stick to talking about in class things.
Rude teacher and graded unfairly. Gave horrible feedback. IA's were more helpful than her. Wouldn't take again.
Do not take professor Brody. She is extremely hard grader and makes you write essays about the most difficult and pointless things. She is very unhelpful and when you ask her questions she won't answer it fully, only leave you more confused. Also I once left class 3 minute early because I was not feeling well, and she gave me a 0 for participation
Goes over powerpoints in class and gives all the information needed for assignments. Goes over grading rubric so you know what is required. Helps with essays and answers all questions asked.
English has never been easy for me, nor have I ever enjoyed English, but Dr. Brody didn't exactly change how I felt about English but changed my perspective and how I proceeded into the subject. I felt more confident in what I was learning and applying to essays and that I was capable of actually successfully writing an essay.
She is mean
As someone who has struggled with writing and English in general, I have never felt so confident about my writing. She gives excellent lectures and is very engaging, giving you everything you need to be successful with checklists of the requirements. She also posts all presentations she uses in class so you don't feel like you have to take notes.
While her expectations are clearly laid out and it's an easy class to pass. Dr. Brody was really hard to pay attention to and most of the time I felt really frustrated with how she dealt with students (I often felt like she treated us like 4yrolds). Compared to other courses, essays were super weird even though they were supposed to be the same...
This professor had super long lectures and spoke an unnecessary amount. She grades tough so make sure you show up to class and take notes on the requirements for each essay.
Dr. Brody is amazing! Her lectures are engaging and entertaining. She gives you every step to writing essays and you do most the stuff in class. Lots of talking with groups and kahoots
Dr. Brody was technically a good teacher. Assignments were laid out clearly, lots of examples were given, grades came back at a fair rate. But she was just sort of mean. She would often degrade or embarrass students for questions or comments, would stop lectures to point out what you were doing wrong to the whole class.
Dr. Brody got the course material across, but she was often condescending about it. Students would go up to her podium to ask for help and she would speak very loudly about whatever problem they were having so that the whole class could hear. I think Dr. Brody will teach you the material, but it definitely won't be pleasant.
She made assignments very easy, she had PowerPoints for everything and if you followed along you will be able to get a good grade on your papers. She was just kind of rude/ inconsiderate. she sometimes made comments that were hurtful or embarrassing, or would call out students. I didn't love her as a teacher but the class is definitely do-able.
Dr. Brody gives powerpoints of everything that you need for the essays. You do most of the work in class so there really is no homework. She is extremely strict about attendance and can be rude at times. If you ever ask a question while she is lecturing she will make you wait until the end of class to ask for help. Tough grader but teaches great!
Dr. Brody along with her IA's (Nel and Monique) are very caring for their students and will go above and beyond to help them pass the class. Attendance is critical for participation points and learning the content. PowerPoints are posted on Halo for reviewing, and there are 3 papers for the entire class (250 points each). Overall, an A+ experience!
She is very good! If you go to class you will do good. She helped me and understood where I was coming. She always helped me and she notices if you care or not.
Heather Brody's ENG-105 class is really writing intensive. She does do her job to the best of her ability and can be reasoned with. Overall, not a bad professor and I learned a lot about rhetoric. It's really not a fun class though and it will definitely be a pain if you go out on the weekends.
Dr. Brody gives clear instructions in all her slides and was very helpful when it came to start writing the papers. She provides templates to help you write and does a great job at explaining the criteria. I definitely recommend this teacher and am taking her again.
Brody is a very tough professor that solely relies your grade on participation, group work, and essays. If you leave class so much as 30 seconds early, even with an explanation, participation is a 0 for the week. She doesn't assist you in any places because she solely assumes you're asking for answers. The IA's however are much more helpful!!
Professor Brody HEAVILY enforces group work and projects, even claiming that students cannot pass her class without other student's input on their classwork. She also starts the semester quickly with tough exercises and sometimes shames students and their answers to make a point. She also often keeps students until the last minute.
Dr. Brody is for sure not a cookie-cutter teacher in the slightest. What I mean is that her blunt teaching style may attract certain people while giving others a bitter experience. If you did something wrong in class (ex: not paying attention), she WILL call you out! I gave her a 4 because her IA's helped my essays more than her long talks.
Lecture heavy, the things she lectures on don't even help with papers. Very confusing way of teaching, I would not recommend at all.
Dr. Brody was the BEST. She personally came up to me to ask me if I needed individual help on my paper. Attendance to her class is important but interesting and valuable.
She was kind, however she would never answer your questions straight forward. Honestly she was just very loud and gave me a headache by her lectures. But there's only 3 essays a semester and we get plenty of time to do them. She's just very specific with how you write them. If you don't follow her slides exactly, you won't do well on the essays.
She was a very tough grader but the IA's helped ALOT and gave good answers. She never answered a question with a clear answer, and would answer it with another question... Participation in this class was super easy, usually DQ's or just showing up.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. Although I did well in her class, it was super boring and definitely ruined my day a little. The whole grade is mainly based on essay performance. If it weren't for having friends in this class I would not have made it through. This class is very strict on attendance and barely ever gets out earlier than 10 minutes before time.
Everything she teaches is on a powerpoint which is then uploaded to announcements after class anyways. If you ever happen to have a question on anything just keep it to yourself or ask ur classmates because she will talk very loudly so the whole class can hear what you said and try to make you feel stupid for asking it. She definitely has favorites
If possible, students should avoid Professor Brody. She can be quite rude and condescending while also embarrassing students for their mistakes. Also, she is a poor communicator, overcomplicates everything she explains, and is very boring. Luckily, her IAs Tara and Nel are helpful and are the only reason why I passed the class.
I think if you see Heather Brody as your professor I think you should find another professor. She would not take time to help you if you needed help. As someone who struggles with English she made me hate it even more. If you miss one assignment or get a bad grade on one thing good luck getting it back up. She took a whole class to yell at us.
Not good. End of story.
the class I took with her was blended so we would only meet one day of the week but her assignments were all broken up into little pieces that we would combine to make our final draft making the assignment very easy for those who did the blended assignment. as long as you respect her she will respect you
Contrary to popular opinion, Dr. Brody was a good professor. If you go to class and follow directions, you will learn a few things. If you have questions, make sure you ask them in class or on blended days; she will not answer outside of that. Don't fall behind because it is hard to catch up.
Dr. Brody is amazing, don't be fooled by her other ratings. She is easy to reach and makes every lecture fun. She will often let you out of class early and make one class a week optional. The assignments are engaging and mostly fun, if you sit up front she will remember you and will have good conversations.
Everything about her being condescending and rude is true, I saw it many times. This class is very easy and she gives you everything you need. Her lectures are boring and long but for participation and to not feel lost with her overly long slides that she posts, show up. Ask for proof reading from her or IAs. trust me- SHOW UP FOR PEER REVIEW DAYS
I would love to take another course with Dr. Brody in the future! She is so kind and thoughtful and truly cares about her students. She provides so many helpful resources and wants her students to succeed. Participation matters; attend class, stay engaged, and you'll have the best semester!
Dr. Brody is an outstanding professor. While she can be blunt, her feedback and advice is always helpful. Get to know her, participate, and ask for help when you need it. Effort is appreciated by her. She provides clear slides, which are always posted after class. Some work is difficult, but it's always useful. I'm grateful to have had her.
Terrible teacher grades way harder than she should. Other professors reviews my assignments and have me an A while she would give me a b or a c rlly hard to get help out of class as she is extremely rude outside of it. I do not reccomend taking and she should be fired asap
Overall not a bad professor. I'm not a big English person so to me, her lectures were long and often dragged on. Only 3 essays, and she walks you through on what is expected on them. Overall, kind of boring professor and boring class but not bad.
She offered blended days which was nice. The slides material she provided was very helpful for essays and projects. A lot of class time felt wasted and she would say a whole lot of nothing but would still hold the class until the last minute in order to get participation points.
Could not stand this class. It was never really clear what criteria she wanted on the projects. You basically have to go in on the "blended learning" days and ask for help. You will not understand from only going on required days. She talks for a very long time and it's painful.
I recommend that students avoid Dr. Brody if possible. Overall, she can be rude and condescending while embarrassing students if they make a mistake. She is a poor communicator and overcomplicates everything she tries to explain in class, including lectures. The only reason why I passed this class was because of Dr. Brody's IA, Tara.
I would steer clear of this professor. She is very unclear with what criteria she wants on her projects and if you message her about why you received the grade that you did, she will belittle you and give you no advice or help on how to fix it in the future. Lecture is very painful to sit through, don't take this class with her.
She's not bad but is a super tough grader. On the bright side though her class is blended so you only have to go to her once a week, but make sure to do the assignment for that day.
She is very condescending if you need help. Her only positive is that she teaches APA well, but thats because she just reads off a powerpoint and spams you with assignments. I had a very negative experience trying to get feedback from her because english has never been easy for me. She gives a lot of projects and the instructions are very unclear.
She is very condescending if you need help. She gives many projects with unclear instructions. I had her for my first semester and it made me want to leave GCU. I already struggle with English and to make her class so confusing for her to be so brutal to students made the struggle harder. She really spams small assignments.
My experience with the professor showed a passive-aggressive tone throughout the entire semester. Tones like this carried long enough to deter students from looking for direct assistance, and this was the case for the majority of my classmates. She is very condescending during direct contact.
This English teacher has a habit of being passive-aggressive all semester long. It made asking for help scary, so me and some other students would just avoided it. when you do try to talk to her, she's can be rude and made it feel as she talks down to you. She is also a very hard grader however her IAs are very helpful.
I had Dr. Brody during my first two semesters at GCU for ENG-105 and ENG-106. Really tough class, she is a very strict grader. It was tough to ask for help without feeling like an idiot. I am an accounting major, and for some reason, the class I struggled with the most is introductory English. Dear CCOB majors, find a different prof for this class.
At first it was chill but after a while she would just go over things that didn't need to be talked about rather than the work that was actually relevant. So much work too.
If you're reading this. PLEASE do yourself a favor and switch out. you might think you're different and will get an A based off the good reviews, you're not.... Everything negative said about her is true. #Karen
Professor Brody's ENG105 class is challenging but rewarding. While she is a tough grader, her feedback is valuable. Stay engaged, attend class, and utilize resources like unstuckstudy - it really helps with study prep. The work is worthwhile, and you'll learn a lot.
Although she's a good professor her class can be pretty hard. Shes a very tough grader. Often goes off on tangents a lot and over explains the assignments. She has good resources tho like the APA slides, I like how every week there are blended days. Its not worth showing up to bc Id go every week for feedback but when I turned it in she gave me a C
The professor expects a lot when it comes to grading.
I would definitely try to stay away from Dr. Brody if you're not an English prodigy. She rambles a lot in her lectures about assignments but grades things that she barely glossed over in her lecture. She seems sweet but is very passive aggressive and her tone is very belittling when you're asking for help. If you're taking her class, Don't...
I loved heather Brody. I took her about a year ago and after taking her I think this rate my professor is way too hard on her. She is a caring professor who wants to see you do well. The class has 3 major essays that make up most of your grade. She gives you a literal checklist of what she grades for, follow that and you'll get 100% on every essay.
Alot of random quizzes and also grading is extremely harsh i don't usually go to her for help because she is extremely loud and will broadcast your business for others to hear. Her lectures are also extremely long its hard to stay focused.
Overall a kind professor that tries to help improve writing skills. If you take her two days a week the second day is an optional day for questions and such, but her lectures are required on the first day and tend to be long-winded. She does use name tents for participation, but she posts everything on halo and gives good resources and templates.
Other than the first paper she writes like 70% of your paper for you, half of my quotes for the last 2 papers I wrote she provided for everyone in class. If you show up and write down what she says, and go to blended days and ask her for feedback You'll do well. I didn't on the first paper and got a 86, I did for the last 2 and got 100s on both.
This was just a frustrating class. Grading is way too subjective. For example, something I got on my feedback and got points taken off said "explains subject but does not adequately engage readers" or "title does not spark interest." Mind you before I turned this assignment in, she told me none of this when I asked for feedback on our feedback day.
No essays in the class, but she gives out Canva templates and requires thorough and clear content but then none of it fits on the Canva because she requires it to be at least 23pt in size. So, after you have to shorten your content to make it fit in the template, you get marked off for it not being clear enough. There's no winning in this class.
Prior to taking this class, I had a strong understanding of English. This class, specifically, you NEED to take 105 before 106. I hadn't taken 105 prior to this class and I am a freshman... therefore there were a lot of topics she just threw at us with no prior knowledge.
When asked for feedback, it was always to "redo the entire assignment" and never clear about what to revise. If the IA's say the assignment was good and solid, the instructor would say "this is not good and doesn't spark anything." It was never clear about what needed revision
such a hard grader even when I try my hardest.
Do NOT take professor Brody. She is not a good professor and a very harsh grader. English is an easy subject for me, except this class truly is not informative. Instead of doing essays we do canva projects, which you would think is easier, but it is NOT. Says everything is good but then gives mediocre grades. Do NOT take her class.
Dr. Brody was a very nice professor. Some of the classes were funny and others were very agitating. We would have I believe 3 APA quizzes. Dr. Brody made APA slides that I use in ever since class to this day! She is a strict teacher that goes by the rules but if you like that you'll do great!
Dr. Brody is a professor that actually makes you want to come to class. I remember one day I came in and I just looked awful. She pulled me aside and I explained that I have not been able to sleep in about 3 days. She immediately closed my computer and said "sweetie, as much as this matters, you matter more." That basically sums her up.
Brody was tough to have as a professor. She was lecture heavy and graded very strictly. She had very arbitrary rules and assignments which didn't make much sense at all. Other students I talked to had a very tough time with her as well. She is kind but her class is tough.
Asked for additional feedback. Was told the two sentences I got from the initial feedback were plenty and there would be no more. Grading was very harsh, especially considering the turnaround time between papers. could have used more guidance.
She is one of the best professors I've had so far. She does blended days so one required class one optional. GO TO CLASS AND BLENDED DAYS and you will pass this class. Going to blended days (optional class) you can get one on one feedback for your assignments. She is very detailed orientated with assignments. But all in all she is a good professor.
Brody verbally humiliated me and treated me differently for not attending optional blended learning days. She will make you feel insecure in your work. I liked the blended course and not writing essays. Her lectures were very redundant and LONG. The information stated in class was posted online, making physical attendance seem unnecessary.
I loved Dr. Brody! I was in a blended class so we had one lecture day a week and the other day was to come in if you wanted extra help. I loved it because we could get one on one help from the professor and IAs and we didn't have to stay the whole time or even come at all. If you come to blended days and ask questions you will do well in thisclass.
I loved professor Brody and will try to have her again for ENG-106. She is a tough grader but if you come to class, pay attention, try, and ask for feedback, you will do well in this class. She makes things VERY clear and will repeat it multiple times if it's important to know. Thursdays were optional, but helped A LOT. Highly recommend!
I wasn't understanding a project (nor was half the class) and when I asked her privately for help she made me feel like a failure not once, but twice. She went on and on about how if I had "paid attention" and "was in class" (I was) and so on, I would be understanding the assignment. blames her bad teaching on us when we don't understand something
She's an okay professor. She is not clear at how she wants things done, and once you attempt to change what you did to how she wants, she will tell you it's still incorrect. She grades really hard and the only thing I learned from this class was how to cite in APA. She will make you feel like you are less than capable and will tank your confidence.
don't waste youre time
Brody basically has the IA's do all of her work. She's unclear in how she wants things done on assignments and when you ask for help she degrades you and makes you feel downright stupid. Would rather have written essays than dealt with her confusing projects.
Do you like feeling like you can't do anything correctly? Then take this class. She is very unclear at her expectations and doesn't give good feedback. She says one thing and once you do that, she changes her mind. She lectures for an hour just to provide information that is irrelevant to her assignments that will be due thanksgiving week. Horrible
Save yourself from being belittled and switch your professor ASAP.
She's not a good professor. Save yourself and drop her class or switch your professor. If you have one of the IA's named Norma, she's the best! (Yes, better than Dr. Brody)
simply an okay professor. she has blended days which are nice bc class is only 1 day a week unless you choose to go but she's horrible at teaching and unclear. do NOT sit in the isle seat as she will walk up and down YELLING and blow your eardrums out. would not take again and i suggest you don't take her at all
Easy class. The Tuesday lectures can be heavy but rarely last the full amount of time. Projects are worked on over several weeks so very manageable and no homework if you do the work in class. I got an A on all the assignments and never went to the blended days. Highly recommend.
I thought Dr. Brody was nice person and a good professor. I personally thought the class was very easy. There are three major projects and everything else is just participation credit. Everything is basically given to you if you pay attention. There's always a sample project and if you follow along and hit all the major points you will do well.
Professor Brody's English class was easy, clear grading, and no homework. However, she was very belittling and embarrassing you in front of others in a loud and rude tone, also condescending. If you get her as a freshman, attempt to go to blended days for the first assignment, after that, avoid going as I did, she posts the slides.
While Professor Brody's class was easy, I did not feel I gained anything from it. She heavily relied on lectures and slides to explain the three projects you do over the semester. She was quite rude at times during the lecture, and the feedback on assignments was lacking. Overall, she wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't recommend taking her class.
She is controversial when it comes to if she is a good teacher, simply SIT IN THE FRONT and ask her questions and she's the best teacher. Blended days are incredible, Dr. Brody gives the best feedback. She makes updated APA slides that you can use throughout college that has everything you need to know. She does not do essay's, only Canva projects.
There are no essays in this class, just Canva projects. My number one tip is to attend the blended days. This class is such an easy A if you go and get feedback on your assignments. She can be a bit harsh but she gives very clear revisions and on blended days, you're there for 45 minutes MAX. Will be taking her again.
Class is only required once a week. She is rude, unclear, cannot teach, and will belittle you. She will lecture the whole period just for nothing. There are 3 major assignments that will make or break your grade. She's picky. I learned nothing from her class. I'd switch professors if you can!
Dr. Brody is rude, unclear, and very passive aggressive. She's made me feel like I was less than capable and the IA's didn't help much. Switch her class if you can!
I loved this class! It followed a blended curriculum so one day a week was lecture and the other was blended for feedback. It was so nice having that time to get feedback and helped my grade a ton. She's funny and caring and really tries to make sure everyone passes.
Because of blended days, lecture days were jam packed full of topics therefore things couldn't be explained properly. She is very rude and will disrespect students in front of others, I made the mistake of calling her "Ms" and she screamed that it was "Dr" to me in front of my classmates. Told me friends to RUN if she was on their schedules.
Literally dreaded coming to class everyday. Never again please.
Dr. Brody is rude and very unhelpful. Class is thankfully once a week if you have her for blended. I would switch her if you can.
Dr. Brody is simply an okay professor. The blended days were nice, however the Canva projects are really just a disguised essay with additional work which really makes it harder than writing a normal essay. She is not clear at how she wants things done, once you attempt to change the wrong to how she wants, she will tell you it's still incorrect.
She is an average teacher if you don't get on her bad side. There is always an assignment due every week. Instead of essay's she does project that are literally essays. She never fully explains what she expects on the projects. I wouldn't recommend her.
would not recommend. can never get full participation and i never miss a single class. shes a hard grader. guidelines were never clear and she is not helpful about it at all.
