Straightforward microbiology lab. High 90s are definitely possible. Lab reports are graded reasonably.
Some labs have way too much to do in time alloted. Difficult lab final. Good content
Heather deserves a lot of credit for biol101 labs. They were very structured and organized. The only bad thing is that the labs were way ahead of class lectures, so we just blanked there. Studying for lab exams is mandatory. Focus both on details (slides) and concepts. I expected higher marks for a lab exam, but overall it was a pleasant experience
her labs made sense other than they were ahead of the class lectures. Assignments were easy! Lab Exam was super hard.
Was not a big fan of the biology 101 lab. Heather comes off as rude at times and I was misinformed of information so lost a huge percentage off of one of the assignments.
I did not enjoy this lab at all, you get roughly 3 hours to complete but there is easily up to 5 hours of work if you want to do it correctly and entirely. My group had to split up and just take pictures so we could add in all the stuff we missed but even then questions were unanswered. Labs were ahead of lectures, had to print 20-30 pages for each
She gives good feedback and will be supportive in class, but when it comes to grading she will be your worst nightmare. Extremely tough grader with absolute ZERO guidelines on how to do the lab reports. She is also dishonest. She made an error in marking my report and wouldn't admit it and I had to report it to the Dean.
expected to be let down and was still sad of the let down
Too much work to complete in the given lab time. Pre-labs take very long to do. TA's seem as though they don't understand the topics being taught in the lab. Lab exam is very difficult, and topics are not all covered in lab. Would not recommend taking this lab if you have another option.
The lab content was always pointless, as we never actually had enough time during the labs to complete everything. She expected way too much for a first year biology lab. Half the stuff we did and learnt was essentially useless. The lab exam was very hard because you had to remember specific things looked at in labs. Heather's labs are trash.
She's by far the worst lab instructor I've had. Gave poor marks without feedback and has stupid little rules for marking which you don't know about until you've done it wrong. The TA's don't know what's going on either which is not helpful because they'll tell you one thing and she'll tell you another. The lab itself is a waste of time.
Gives Assignments before class starts. Assignments are toughs and more in numbers.
No proper guideline about assignments for new students and giving too many assignments before the lab starts.
By far the worst lab I have ever taken. Heather's labs require more work than all my other science classes combined. She expects far too much before and after labs (lab "book" questions, pre labs, post lab assignments, readings). Everything takes so long and the lab itself is boring. She picks your groups for you in lab so be prepared.
Don't ever expect to email her, and not get a sassy reply saying "you did this wrong about the email", not even addressing the question you asked.
Shew seems like she hates her job, and the quality of her labs and lazy responses to emails prove it
Terrible. Be ready to teach yourself everything while receiving almost zero feedback. It was never clear what learning objectives were and lab material did not line up chronologically with what's being taught in class at all. Lots of homework for such a small portion of the final grade. Easily the worst lab experience I've ever had. Stay clear
Labs are a mess and is as though no thought is put into what should be learned. Marking is all across the board but do not expect to get a good mark regardless. Cannot easily email her as you will only be responded by what is wrong with the email rather than your question. Be prepared to dedicate all time towards this lab and teach yourself all.
If you like jokes that are not funny take your Bio 101 labs with Heather. She is rude, gives everyone on the group assignments different marks with no explanation, gives no reasoning to grades you receive, and the labs are pointless. By all these poor reviews I am surprised she has not been fired yet.
By far the worst out of all labs/classes I've ever done. The marking is extremely tough yet she doesn't even bother giving feedback, not to mention the volume of work assigned. Pre-lab assignments, group assignments, videos and extremely long pre-lab reading material. Feels as if she doesn't even want students to do well.
By far the worst lab instructor I have ever had. The labs have way too much information for the time allotted and the content expected to be known for the lab final was harder than the actual classes final exam. Little feedback on reports and pre-labs, do not expect her to ever listen to your complaints or guide you with any assignment.
This lab involved many extra hours of research as the information provided by Ms. Dietz was insufficient. I had an AWFUL TA that marked mercilessly and rudely. At minimum 6 people brought this to Heathers attention and she did not care whatsoever, just said, "every TA is different and sometimes you have bad luck."
By far the rudest person I have ever come across. She belittles you and makes you feel like an idiot, I want to drop out of Biology because of this lady. Acts like she is superior to us and always has something negative to say. She will never say anything constructive to help you, but rather destructive to make you feel terrible. AVOID AVOID AVOID
Heather has no care in the world about any of her students. She hardly replies to students questions and when she does her responses are not helpful. If you can avoid her class, do it!
Heather Dietz is the worst lab instructor Ive ever had. She is the reason Ive decided to change my major from biology to literally anything else. She is very much obsessed with her rules that she neglects to tell you about, so if you break them out of desperation, she will refuse to help anybody else. I wouldnt recommend her to my worst enemy
SHE DOES NOT CARE. AT ALL. She gets 'agitated' when students ask questions, and you better not ask her anything that someone else already has. Never done something before? Don't worry, she'll throw entire computer programs at you and tell you to 'figure it out amongst yourselves'
This lab instructor should not be allowed to teach first year biology students, breaks my heart to see my younger peer being thrown into a depression over this class. When you ask the prof for help her answer is always figure it out-in the nicest way possible. Every assignment is way to long and hard with no context or explanation on how to comp.
She was rude and passive-aggressive. Wouldnt answer students' questions and gave unclear instructions.
I haven't seen a rude prof. in my life. Heather dietz doesn't give clear instructions to do assignment. Also, it is difficult for students to do assignment if they need help from her. Because, She doesn't care whether student fail or pass in the class. I would recommend the skip class or choose other teacher.
Gave specific assignment guidelines that, if followed, would result in lower grading.
The university should be ashamed of the fact that they allow Heather to be the only option for the Bio 101 lab after so many complaints and the obvious disrespect and lack of care she has for student's mental health and academic success. Understanding her expectations is like putting together a puzzle & she expects you to read her mind.
I took BIOL224 with this professor, and I honestly lost for her labs since first day! She expected the lab reports at professional level. Going from biology level 100s to level 200s, she expected you to learn how to write full scientific journal report without teaching you how. All labs expected to learn individually and the group project is HARD
This is the hardest biology class I took at University of Regina. The lab reports are extremely difficult and expected to learn lab materials and write 10 pages of the scientific journal report by reading a bunch of papers! The group project is SUCK, no one contributed until the last minute! If you dont trust my comment, take her biology classes!
Very ironic that she constantly talks about having clear writing in her marking schemes yet she cant effectively communicate her expectations for ANY of the labs and changes the instructions midway after half the class submitted. Why hasnt she been fired yet? Probably because the U of R doesnt care about any of the students who are funding them.
Unnecessary and very long pre-lab assignments that are only graded as participation. Labs are very time consuming with a ton of instructions and steps, yet there never seems to be much clarity among students. Many questions are met with passive aggressive replies or creative ways of saying "figure it out yourself".
Offers absolutely no help towards the labs and tells the TAs to do the same.
Everything is unclear in her lab. She gives little to no guidance for any of the papers, and the group project was a complete nightmare. She expects you to write professional papers without showing you how. Even if you follow the rubric, don't expect to get anything about an 80. She's a complete nightmare through and through.
TA for BIO100 did a way better job explaining, making students feel welcomed. Worked so hard, yet felt set up to fail since there was no clarity. Overcomplicates everything confusing students, but won't tell important info. Each pre-lab takes hours; readings, multiple simulations/quizzes. Doesn't include actual lab/hardest graded assignment.
Her grading is the reason I switched my major out of bio. She does not care the slightest bit about her students and makes it extremely difficult to access her, even when you do she is very rude. She does not provide clarity of any kind about any part of the course and overall the U of R needs to take a look at her teaching and grading methods.
Overall, the labs were not very hard if you give yourself enough time to do them. However, she answers questions vaguely, and tells you to basically figure it out yourself if you don't understand, even though she never taught us it. The grading scheme was not consistent at all, which was frustrating
If you have a lab with Heather be prepared to lose marks over the weirdest reasons even though you may get each question right from fake grammar errors to having an introductory sentence for the question. There's a reason she has the lowest rate my prof at the University of Regina!!! Avoid at all costs for your own well being!
If you think you don't have other options then just have to deal with her for 4 months of suffering to death. I paid to fail this class, and I did not even learn a single thing. Although I need this class for my pre-requisite. I guess the university wants her only because students keep enrolling again and again for her class just to fail.
Shes prolly the worst professor I have had to take at the university. She would make you work so much for assignments worth 5%? Like seriously? Shell make the UR courses very confusing. No one likes her, THE WORST!!!!
Tophat assignments were awful with lots of meaningless questions.
She is HORRIBLE! Please, please, PLEASE don't take a BIOL class with her as your teacher or lab instructor. Her labs are unreasonably difficult and she doesn't give out enough information. Gradings are confusing and there is marks taken off for no reason. You have to hand in labs on time or else you get a 0, if you don't hand in all labs you fail.
Her labs are the embodiment of "vague"-even my TA was confused on what the instructions mean and cannot help us. Be prepared to spent countless hours with little reward and no support. Personally, I have loved biology ever since high school, but she has plagued my passion for this field with despair. Pain. Agony. Helplessness. Prepare to embrace it
Heather is by far the worst lab coordinator at the U of R. She puts zero time or effort into making her assignments clear, to the point where her own TAs don't understand what she is asking. The workload for the lab is unreasonable and takes more time than watching the class lectures. Zero support and instruction, prepare for massive confusion.
Definitely one of the worst profs out there. Her TopHat notes are awful, questions are even worse. The lab assignments are hard to understand, confusing, and just over all challenging to complete. The grading system is unclear and they never provide you with good feedback. I paid tuition just to watch someone else look under a microscope.
Never in my life have I come across such an unusual teacher. Coming from a student that went into her lab being as unbiased as possible, I disliked everything about her lab. Although this was a first-year course, she formed her assignments as if she was teaching fourth-year students. Do not make the mistake of taking her lab.
Only prof that punishes you for following the EXACT assignment instruction. You have to disregard the instructions, read the rubric, and then read her mind, and you will still only be barely passing still. Idk why the university has not fired her yet.
Soo mismanaged that 60% of your lab is due at the last 3 weeks. She gives you so much to do for what seems like no purpose. WILL TAKE OFF MARKS FOR ERRORS OUT OF YOUR CONTROL. Oh turn it in wont accept an upload so u have to do it again causing u to be late only by few min, 50% percent off if she feeling generous. or a 0%.
If you value your mental health, avoid any class with Heather at all costs. Don't follow the assignment instructions or else you will lose marks. Instead, follow the rubric. Be prepared to somehow complete assignments without any instructions. Don't bother asking questions as you will not receive an actual answer, only vague responses.
Terrible. The worst lad instructor. You pay for a lab to watch someone else do it online and then you are expected to write an 8-page lab report on it. Offers minimum instructions, rude, makes you feel stupid, doesn't answer questions, TAs do most if not all of the work, not organized, overall the worst. Sadly you have no other choice...
Awful prof. She is so difficult to reach and most of the time will not respond. Her resources dont teach you anything but you are expected to know EVERYTHING going into the labs. She provides pre-labs on TopHat which are zero help and dont prepare you for labs, her grading scheme is extremely unfair and makes it really difficult to enjoy the lab.
Incredulous. How could a teacher be this lazy while being simultaneously bad? She has vague lab assignments, is hard to reach, and belligerent if you try to have an audience with her. Please try and avoid this woman at all costs.
Approaching my third year and never have I experienced such a difficult teacher. She never attended the lab and the TA's were put in charge and they rarely knew what to do. The lab was atrocious. She will delete emails containing questions for her if you don't send them to the correct email. One the most stressful classes I've ever experienced.
By far the WORST lab instructor I have ever had. She does not care for her students whatsoever and if you make ONE small mistake she'll potentially fail you. She expects professional lab reports from first year students and does not teach you how to do it. Her instructions for labs are extremely confusing and I am so surprised she still works here.
She combined the work of doing the lab online and in person having way too many assignments, labsters, top-hat questions, a paper, and group project. Each week is exhausting, grading is wack and assignments/papers have unclear guidelines. She wont ever answer your questions. Worst lab I've ever had to take, be prepared to be exhausted and depressed
I always said I was never going to write a ratemyprof review, but I just wanted to confirm everything below is correct. I honestly don't mind spending hours on end for a project BUT when that assignment is only worth 2% of 30% then it is ridiculous. Literally the workload is unhinged compared to any other science class.
RSM visit is a complete waste of time, spent 4 hours there with 2 classmates to do 80 some questions that were not handed in or even used in the lab. There is one online lab right before the lab exam that took me at least 30 hours to do and it was only worth 5%. Lab exam is worth 75% of your grade which is absolutely cruel for a first year course.
By far the worst lab experience ever. The lab final was worth 75% of the lab grade making it worth 30% of my total course grade so it is basically a final exam. I had to study for this the weekend right after I had just written a test for the lecture portion of the course. Everything is game she said including the whole textbook. AVOID THIS PROF
Whenever I have had Heather as my lab professor, I have always found the lab to difficult beyond necessity. The difficulty in this lab stemmed from the confusing questions asked on assignments, not being able to contact her directly for any questions, having 8 to 9 hours of work a week. Watch out for the stuff at the beginning of the lab.
Reading the other reviews terrified me because I needed this class. When I actually met her it was just...ok?Tough grader, but open to answering questions inside or outside the lab. Friendly and will give you feedback on how you can improve if you ask. Def has lots of work and prep, but nothing crazy if you are used to upper year expectations.
Yeah, basically what everyone said here is correct. Tremendous amount of work worth little of your grade (10%). Final lab worth 30%, covering every possible detail. Confusing, poor assignments that prof won't answer (only TA's who are very nice but don't quite know the answer either) Certainly made life a lot harder :)
If you take Biology 224, choose the lab instructor VERY carefully. This professor was vague in assignment tasks, had astronomical expectations for 2nd/3rd-year students, and would take marks for even the slightest incorrect stroke of your pen. Please, if you do not wish to lose your passion for the biological world, do not have your lab with Dietz.
Labs were practically irrelevant and were worth very little in the overall lab grade. Labs would only be worth 5% each while the lab exam was worth 75%. Her emails about questions would sound condescending and harsh. Very last lab was a complete waste of time that even until now I still don't know why we were required to do it.
She plagiarized lab material from other sources. Poor notification methods for when assignments are due and to many assignments for a lab. There was a pre-lab assignment (reasonable), group work, imaginary alien assignment (waste of time) and online assignments as well. Do not take if you do not have to!
The in-person lab isn't what makes her difficult, she's actually a very nice human being. What makes her labs difficult is the overwhelming amount of prep-work you are doing weekly. Weekly, I was doing about 5-6 hours of lab-prep prior to the lab, preparing my notebook and filling in things I had already filled in. SO MUCH BUSY WORK. Nice, but hard
Awful.
PSA, Avoid at all costs. Spent $ on the textbook to just gain access to the in-lab assignment. Refuses to use UR courses. You spend 4-6 hours AT LEAST to attempt to understand the concepts in lab. Labs are "ran" by TA's but literally you are given resources and you figure it out on your own with no help. Also, 80% lab final :/ Horrible.
This is the worst experience of my life. How is she still employed? So much work, and nothing is graded. The final is 80%. You have to pay for a lab textbook on TopHat, and she doesn't even write it herself. It's so much stuff for a class you don't need a lab for. All you do is look through microscopes. All by yourself with no feedback.
I too questioned if she could really be that bad and wow were these people not kidding. The top hat text book is horribly set up with countless links to outside videos and sources. Hands down the worst experience with top hat that I have ever had. You do a lot of self guided microscope stuff though which is educational.
She made me want to sleep on the highway and get repeatedly run over until I was a part of the road. If u have any other choice DO NOT take her. She's very unorganized and the labs are hard. You don't know if you're doing anything right cuz she doesn't mark the labs. The lab final and lab 5 make up most of ur grade
The worst lab I have ever taken. Extremely stressful, disorganized, and makes you want to d!e. Do not take Heathers lab. Lab is 80% of your final grade, and have to pay for tophat when you don't even get graded on it. Only get graded on quizzes and lab final, not the work you do in the lab. Waste of time, money, and tears. Heather is the worst.
This lab made me question my choices. Pre-labs are EXTREMELY long. 1st year students are expected to know things that 4th year students would. Lab grade basically depends on lab quizzes and lab final, and the labs are confusing and extensive; sometimes the instructions on the stations and on the worksheet don't match. Avoid this lab if possible.
This lab, in my personal opinion, was awful. The lab final is 80% of your grade. The labs were unclear on what we had to do, most things were pointless. TopHat questions were extensive and don't even count towards your grade. Anything in the lab or on TopHat was "fair game" for the exam, which made it hard to prepare when you saw 30 things per lab.
TopHat pre-labs felt endless, and useless. Never introduced herself to the students, and expects 4th year knowledge from 1st years. Lab grade was dependent on 3 things and lab final worth 80% which seems ridiculous. Anything on the topHat was "fair game" which is overwhelming considering there's easily 5 hours worth of reading and videos per lab.
Way to much reading Prelab lab final worth 80% so its like all the labs arent even worth showing up to Everything is poorly explained and its difficult to get any answers from her
Absolutely horrible. Nothing is marked. For our lab final we were supposed to recieve answers to questions on our pre-labs, but since there was "such a low participation," she is not releasing them. The lab final study guide is extremely vauge and have no idea if any of my answers are right due to her not releasing answers. Horrible. Run away.
Heather is the WORST lab instructor at the U of R. Her labs are a complete waste of time as the only things that are graded are the in-lab quizzes and the lab final worth 80%. If you have any other choice for a lab instructor or can wait to have a different lab instructor please take that instead!!
The actual class has such nice professors who are invested in your learning and success. Then there's heather. Good for nothing. Doesn't teach, doesn't try, and sets everyone up for failure. I hate biology because of her. I never want to encounter a person like her again.
An ungodly amount of info is expected to be memorized for the final. Labs were nothing but confusing. Homework was not for marks even though all info on TopHat was "fair game" for final (worth 80% of lab grade). Heather Dietz power-trips on her students with how she teaches... expecting 1st yr students to understand info she's been studying for yrs
I'm a biochem major who genuinely loves school. Her bio lab was terrible, she did not show up to a single lab, the lab final was based on material that we did not learn. If you ask a question in the class discussion she either doesn't respond or replies in a way that makes you feel stupid for asking a normal question.
I'm a biochem major who genuinely enjoys class, but I dreaded this lab. She didn't show up to a single lab or the final, nothing was marked until the last day of classes, and the lab final was on material we did not learn. If a question was asked in the class discussion she either did not respond or would answer rudely.
As an introductory level class, they are asking for a lot more (4th-year level work). Extremely messy and confusing lab for everyone, including the TAs. The lab final is short answers (80% worth)-information we are learning or preparing is right or not. We paid so much to learn from ai and wikipedia(not for marks). Learned less and suffered more
Hated this lab and learnt absolutely nothing. Heather was rude replying to students and made you purchase top hat and go through hours of stuff to not even be graded on. Very unclear. TA's were great and would try and help the best they could but barley had the information they needed from heather for the lab.Avoid Heather at all costs.
Not a good prof. I think i failed the lab. i did in 80% for the quizzes though. She is a tough grader and not nice in person. My grades in lecture components are very high but failed the course just because i was left by 1% in lab final.
If I could give her a 0, I would. She is a VERY tough grader, and it feels like I was penalized a lot in the lab final. My GPA is going to drop because of her. AVOID AT ALL COST.
You know those profs that take pride in students failing? That's Heather.
Penalizes students, rude, more than half the class does not even know what she looks like because she did not care to introduce herself to the students. I think she almost feels proud of herself that so many students have probably already failed this course or are going to partly because of her.
I think some of the reviews on this prof may be a bit harsh, however I do agree with many complaints made on this lab. I think that a lab final being worth 80% of your total lab grade is a bit outrageous and causes a lot of unneeded stress and anxiety especially for a 100 level course. That being said, I didn't find the final as hard as many claim.
Be prepared to put yourself through stress because of Heather.
I did extremely well in the lecture side of this class and yet my entire grade was dependent on the lab exam. The lab is worth 40% of your final grade and of that 40%, 80% is the lab exam that is almost impossible to study for. My best advice with taking this lab is study the genus and species of EVERYTHING or alternatively avoid at all costs!!!
She's actually a surprisingly nice person if you go to her office hours, but the lab itself was horrible. The lab guides are useless and you have to pay for the tophat and it's not even graded. The lab final was hard. I somehow managed to get a good grade, but I truly thought I failed and so did a lot of other ppl. Hands down the worst lab ever.
Do yourself a favour and don't take a lab with Heather.
Heather is one of the hardest markers you will meet because she tests on obscure things you would never have thought to study. The lab notebooks and prep for this lab is rigorous, but the actual hands in content is not bad. The lab exam/ quizzes are hard, but the lecture profs make up for it. Don't let her deter you from taking a good class.
thought my grade was 85 , but the final she made was not related to the labs we did, hence i failed in the lab section! The TAs have no knowledge themsleves, they are just present enough to read off the instructions given by her!!!! Lab final is worth 80% of the lab component.
worst prof ever
Heather gets bad reviews because of her Biol 101 class, but when you get her in higher grade biol she is an amazing lab instructor. I had her for 224 and 310. The labs went smoothly, she was approachable and helpful and an overall amazing prof. You need the pre- lab work and to pay attention. If you do that you wont have any problems with her!
People say she's horrible but she's great. I would take her again instead of other lab instructors if I could. She's straight forward about what is needed. She tends to give hints in the semester on what will be on the lab exam. She's helpful, ask her questions if you're confused about what needs to be done. She explains a things better in person.
I RECOMMEND NEVER TAKING A COURSE HEATHER INSTRUCTS OR OVERSEES. One of the worst rated profs at the entire university for good reason.
The lab was a real struggle, but Unstuck study helped me survive. The final exam was brutally tough, but the professor was surprisingly approachable in office hours.
AVOID IF YOU CAN Very "nice" in person, but she does not want you to succeed. We were told at the start of the semester that our lab notebooks were for our own purposes and would not be graded. Then it was sprung on us that the notebooks were actually worth 40% of the overall lab exam grade even though it was not in the syllabus
take another class because this one isn't at all worth it. Never even got to meet Heather, everything was led by TAs who were as lost as us half of the time. Quiz at the end of every lab, and also had online labs and quizzes. Overall, the whole lab was so unorganizied and dense for no reason. Strong feeling she just wanted everyone to fail bio.
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. Avoid this lab at ALL costs. Labs are very unorganized, with too much stuff crammed into the lab that you dont have time to finish. Has online labs with TONS of information. Says lab exam is fair game for ALL the material covered in labs and online labs. Would like to see her perform the labs she has set up.
I strongly advise avoiding this lab. The instructor was disorganized, and the TAs were unhelpful. It was frustrating to feel that the subject was as new to them as it was to us. We were expected to memorize over 30 scientific terms for an introductory course. The final exam was overly difficult. This course was extremely frustrating.
I've found it extremely difficult to seek support from this instructor. Whenever I visit her during office hours to clarify mistakes on lab reports, instead of receiving guidance, I often end up being penalized even more harshly. This approach feels discouraging and unhelpful, especially when students are making an effort to understand and improve.
Unrealistic: Don't take unless you can study 24 hours a day (you'll still fail cuz her calculators for the final are from the prehistoric precambrian era so you can't calculate biodiversity properly). Lies: She said theres 5 long answers on final based on main concepts (thats cap- studied ev still knew nthn). her existence is academic misocnduct
id rather eat raw chicken and get salmonella than asee ehr again
Preaches “conciseness and clarity” in scientific writing, yet lab 10 includes THE WHOLE DATABASE of the royal Saskatchewan museum. There's gotta be a better way to present information instead of giving students the whole encyclopedia to memorize gang
Genuinely the worst prof on this enitre milky way galaxy. She stes everythig up in a manner to make eveyrone fail on prupsoe. not worth it ep if ur pre med bc ur avergae will be cooked. Her labs fit 100000 acitivties into the span of about 4 seconds,. if she did her own lab she'd be sobbing. fix up fr
She made us walk around the whole museum on our own time, and answer at least 3 questions for EACH display. On top of that you have to sift through the museum's whole database just to answer one question. If you have 38 hours in a day, take this class, if not, run!
don't take or you're hair will prematurely turn whtie
girly pop deadah gave us every fact discovered back to artistotle's days and expects u to memorize it. Never take unless this is the only class u have and can study 28 hours a day otherwise u will fail + the final feels like the hunger games and the purge because alarms go off so don't take unless u wanna age early
You can study three months in advance and your grade is determined by a calculator that's older than your great grandfather
don't take unless u wanna be body slammed when u ask questiosn
Too much to go through for the final exam. It seems impossible to go through everything. The offline labs were unorganized No marks are given for doing tasks that were written in the notebook
Goodluck. Youll need it.
Hilariously bad - cheat sheet? Didn't matter, focus on genus names and you'll get an 80. - Unorganized lab to the point where people can't get to them in time - Unclear instructions - doesn't even participate in the lab and has TA's do everything.
Don't take unless you have no life and can afford to memorize the scientific name of every organism on Mother Earth and place it into it's appropriate classification category.
Cons: Will make u hate ur life because it's so painstaking and there's nothing you can do to pass as it's made for failure Pros: I like how she always and then because yeah and I also like hwo she always
Heather is a very nice person and easily found during office hours or by appointment for questions. However, DO NOT TAKE HER BIO 101 LAB unless you don't want to be taught at all but just given statements by the Teaching Statements (Yes TS's not TA's). Who also clearly know nothing about what we were doing just there because it was required.
Heather Dietz's goal is for you to not pass her lab; she tries to fit way too much information into the labs and expects you to know EVERYTHING. No amount of studying could have prepared me for the absolute monstrosity that was her final. If you value your GPA, your sanity, or your will to live, don't take her class.
Heather Dietz's only goal is for you to fail her lab; she try to fit way too much information in to the labs and expects you to know EVERYTHING. No amount of studying could have prepared me for the absolute monstrosity that was her final. If you value your GPA, your sanity, or your will to live, run.
If you are reading this... you have been warned. Profs in other classes will speak about how students don't complete the course evaluations and rate their professors. YET 100+ students took the time to submit a 1/5 review for Heather. So run run FAR AWAY!! Don't look back!! If you have to take the class (+ your name's charlie) - good luck charlie
The lab is run so poorly, the labs don't make sense half the time, not enough time is given during lab to complete the required content; don't get me started on the RSM lab 10. Also the lab exam is brutal and this is the first year it's not worth 80% of your lab mark and you get a cheat sheet-doesn't help at all, it's brutal Cool lab in theory
oh Heather, you sure are something! you get a 5.0 because of how good you are at designing an absolutely abysmal lab. The labs were so unorganized, TAs were completely unhelpful and had no idea what was going on. she WONT let you use your OWN calculator in the final for some reason. Take this lab if you absolutely hate your life. RSM lab was horrid
All the reviews are correct , this lab and prof are horrible. Terrible teaching and too complex of material. Final is insane.. not enough time to complete part 1. Too much info for a cheat sheet to even matter. The whole course is awful.
Her finals are genuinely EVIL, She thinks she's helping us by allowing a cheat sheet for the final but no matter what you put on it, it won't help at all. And she thinks it's funny to put a question like this, "Was your cheat sheet helpful? If not, how could you make it better?"... ok jokester...
They say that sometimes in life u should run, not walk - when it comes to this lab, you should just book a flight and never come back. TA's were the worst, lab was the worst. Why is Heather still an instructor? Who does she know on the inside who won't replace her. She's one of those people who def has a relation with someone at the uni. Awful.
The reason why she is still allowed to teach in this uni is one of the 7 wonders of the world and requires more research than the theory of relativity itself. Absolutely atrocious lab. Expects u to know based on scientific names what plants are monocots and eudicots and how many times each animals farts in a day. Don't take, not worth the time.
Heather in the BIOL224 lab was good and very understanding. After taking her BIOL101 lab, I had no hope for a good lab. She showed me time and time again about how she is a good lab instructor. I really liked the practical and theory aspect as they went hand in hand. The group project was very clear and each lab was exciting to attend and learn.
I was really skeptical after bio 101, but Heather was actually really great for 224. She was nice, organized, helpful, and offered good feedback. She's in person at each lab. She cares about the lab and was very willing to help students. Assignments and lab final were fair if you prepared for them. Great experience overall
I think the reason she doesn't introduce herself to the lab is because she knows everyone's gonna hate her. I have never met someone who wants to see their students fail more
This lab was embarrassingly terrible. Your GPA will take a hit because of this lab. Finished the Lecture component with a 95, but know the final grade will be down to about a 80 because of this lab, and that isn't from lack of trying. The University of Regina should be embarrassed for continuing to allow this lab to wreak havoc on first years.
horrible prof. horrible attitude. horrible lab. if u want to be ate out by eudicots and monocot this is for you! The final had me wishing for my end. Literally had to go cry in the arms of another prof and he agreed she's horrible. In conclusion, take only if you know how to do black magic otherwise you will not pass! :)
I'm not discrediting how horrible the bio 101 lab was with her, but I promise you she is 10x better in upper year courses. The tasks in this lab were interesting, fun and organized well. I'll admit the lab exam was stressful and a bit tricky, but 100% manageable. She was kind, actually made an effort to get to know you and wants you to succeed!
I think it's all already been said by the hundred other brutal reviews. Heather seems to enjoy watching students fail. Unfortunately, the U of R seems to love her terrible teaching as it continues to put her as the Biol 101 lab instructor. Seriously, for a first-year course, her expectations are insanely unrealistic and senseless.
M crying Thousands of dollars wasted. The teaching in the in person lab was so horrible they don't even teach you most of the things and believe to know it beforehand coming to the lab, like if a person would have able to study on their own then why would they pay thousands for letting someone teach them.
When Dante wrote The Divine Comedy, he clearly forgot this level of hell. Here, the guilty and innocent are punished the same. The only light is that of the burning bodies. You will plead, pray and perish. Are you not ready for such fire? Perhaps this lab is not for you. Sagas will be written, and each will fear the name Dietz.
This lab should be studied as a physiologic torture method. I should have listened to the reviews, the GPA blood shed by the countless victims of this monstrosity. Goodluck my friends, you will need it. Pre and post lab quizzes that you can't study for, a 60% lab final that can only be described as pain. Having this many bad reviews is an art.
Although I did not like her for BIO 101, she was a good lab professor and made sure that you knew what you were doing. There is a group project worth a large portion of your lab grade, but as long as you have good group members you will do well. The lab exam is not hard as long as you understand the Tophat information and can do in-lab procedures.
The labs aligned with what we were doing in lectures but the they were so disorganized. The disorganization made it nearly impossible to learn something tangible and the number of species we had to know by name and image on the microscope was impractical since they were a lot.
Heather makes a large effort to APPEAR very nice and helpful. Overall a very out of touch and oblivious academic, that made my time in this course so bad I had to attend therapy during and after. The TA's are only there to repeat what they have been told and not to assist you but rather make statements and say they don't know.
