she is an amazing T.A., will do her best to help students
Inconsistent, repetitious reading schedule, course materials too general
Heather is by far the best t.a. i've ever had. She goes the extra mile to help. Even though I'm no longer in any of her classes she still helps me with my work. Best ever!!!
I don't know, she wanted to be Best Buds with everyone, plus she kinda slanders the actually professor she's TA-ing for. What's that all about? Hint- No professionalism!
she is hard marker and not fair at all. He assignments were difficult and not clear. Also she has major mood swings. I do not reccomend anyone taking her class
She's a nice woman, knows her stuff and she tries to make lectures as interesting as possible. I don't know about the review below, though, b/c I didn't find her assignments unclear or hard...but I had Morgan and it seems like he was WAY harder of a marker than Heather!
she was so helpful, great prof and easy marker too. Just study from her lecture notes and you'll do great. Have to attend her lects .. very helpful.
she is an amazing professor she marks fair and makes sure you are prepared for your tests and exams
Such a warm hearted, lovely woman. she is always willing to help. She makes the course alot more interesting than it is, cause ppl really how interesting can sociological methods be?
She is funny but needs to make the topic a little more interesting and find a new T.A
This course was much different than described. The topics were somewhat interesting but the lectures were boring. She marked tough on the essays. The format of the course required too much time (online dicussions, essays, projects) The upside was no exam! She was very approachable however, and a pleasant lady nonetheless.
not recommended
Brutual marker. Moody. Unclear expectations. Not a happy person. Wastes the first 30 mins of each class chastising students about what they are doing wrong and then bores class with stories of her dog Baxter and TV she watched the previous night. Dry Lectures. readings are great. No one enjoys the course or is doing well! TRUST ME.
very hard marker..very off topic..confusing..dumb questions on tests
Very UNREASILTIC and unfair marker.... impossible to get an A. She is in no way qualified to be a professor, as she does not relate to her students. She says one thing and then does the opposite. I have never hated a class so much in my life and this is coming from a straight A/A+ student - - -> AVOID THIS WOMEN!!!!
I found this class to be really interesting and really not that much work. She spaces assignments nicely and and although the DGs can be time consuming, they make you do your readings and keep you up to date with what is going on in the course. Yeah she is a rather tough marker but it is not a first year class, you have to try!
off topics at times, unclear lecture notes (even lectures) reading materials are too vague, too many mood swings, unrealiable TAs, class is boring most times, tests are hard & TOO MANY BLANK SPACES, & too general, although she's nice & can be helpful but hard to contact her if need assistance
subject material is straight forward, but Heather is unclear about her expectations. DGs are the worst component of course. her grading is inconsistent. She is kind hearted, but i suspect over worked. I would NEVER recommend this course or any course of her courses. I'm an A student getting a B in her class and i hate school because of her cla
Heather was by far one of the BEST profs I had...who ever said she isn't easy to get a hold of must have never went to class as she gave out her home number to be reached before american idol is on...She's amazing... If you want to do the work, study the main and obvious points in the readings, along with her lecture slides... your set!
unfair marker, disorganized, very moody, drags on about personal life during lectures
She lists out all the things that you need to do to get a good mark. READ IT and you will be fine. You can basically skim the readings and obtain a good mark. The online tutorials can be a pain sometimes since you are require to post in discussions regulary and add to other's contributions.
THIS IS THE PROF. FROM HELL. she has a three hour class in which she spends 30 mins babbling about her dog, family etc. which could be devoted to spending on actually have a REAL tutorial instead of those bull**** online tutorials. STAY AWAY FROM HER CLASSES...when THE WHOLE class questioned their marks, she along with her TA had no response.
Lectures are dreadfully boring and she tends to spend 90% of her time just reading powerpoint slides to us. If a chunk of our grade wasn't on mandatory class attendance I am pretty sure most people would have fled. She seems nice enough, but overall not someone I would recommend.
she is horrible. lectures are read off of powerpoint, often talks about her friends and their sons and their dogs and her mother, who nobody really needs to know about. terribly rude and gossips about students with TA. marks are unfair, and has no explaination when students question about their marks.
I agree with others. All she does is talk about her friends and family. Her lectures consist of reading off slides and then she rambles on and on for about 5-10minutes and then forgets what she was discussing. Says everyone starts with an 80 and then she marks down. Mandatory attendance so people are forced to actually attend a boring class.
Horrible!!!!!!! Exams are never on anything useful, or any major concepts she teaches! she revolves her test around little things that have no major importance in the course and is not helpful at all!
Ms. Garrett is absolutely not qualified to be teaching sociological methods. She rambles on and on about her personal life instead of teaching her students relevant material. She is unclear and unsure all the time. She gets personally offended if she can't answer a student's question. I do not recommend taking this class with her at ALL.
Heather Garrett is an amazing Prof! She goes above and beyond to help you if you ask for it!! If you review the multiple choice and true and false questions from the study guide and review the lecture notes you will be fine. As long as you do the work you will get the mark you deserve. I don't understand why anyone would giver her a bad review!
Heather is a very nice lady and is very personable however she is unorganized and unclear when it comes to her teaching methods. The for this course is useless...a study guide is to be purchased ($10) aside from the useless text...if the study was organized by chapter it could have been a useful tool for the course...her test are hard even though
Heather was pretty good and very helpful. Sometimes the lectures could be a bit boring(but that was more because of the material). She emails the slides ahead of time which is also really helpful. If you go to the lectures and keep up with the readings you will do fine. She is not a bad prof at all. Just be prepared to do some work.
Prof doesnt allow the use of labtops in her class. Lecture notes posted online so her class is pointless but during summer its mandatory. The readings are rather boring and the course content is rather useless. She tries to make her lectures interesting but she always ends up talking about her personal life.
The class description is nothing what Heather talks about, in fact it is quite the opposite. The class material is very boring and so are the lectures. Heather Garrett speaks in monotone which make it very difficult to focus on class. On top of all that, she is a very hard marker and nit-picks on every little detail. Not the best professor to have!
Heather is a critical thinker and encourages her students to think critically as well. Her course helped me to analyze situations in greater detail and develop a critical standpoint. She really makes you work, but it sure pays off in the long run. People who talk negative about her can just continue to hate, because that's all you're good for.
A very boring lecturer, who bores herself when talking, because she is always yawning. There are 3 tests and on top of that one huge group research assignment. I would not recommend her when taking 2030. Yes she is nice but the lectures and so boring and unclear. Takes attendence in both lecture and tutorials.
I am currently taking the summer course with her soon. How is the summer course with her and how are the assignments?
A very nice and helpful professor who genuinely cares about her students. After the strike I found her to be extremely understanding, by changing the course outline, tests, and the assignment to help relieve people of their stress. I would recommend that anyone who needs or wants to take Sociological Methods should try to get into her class.
She is a nice person. She is always available for extra help. Study her notes and you will do fine. Lectures are boring but during lecture she give a lot hints for the exam. HER STUDY GUIDE is worth buying.
She is a really helpful prof. Classes r useful although they can get unbearably boring most of the time. Her tests are EXTREMELY easy if you study the textbook good and her study guide is THE BEST HELP! I hardly studied at all 4 a few tests, and just readin the guide got me a B+ on em. Be prepared for a team presntation! Good prof; hated the cours
Heather is a boring prof to listen to. She rambles on, easily gets off topic, provides vague descriptions as to what she expects in assignments while nit-picking for marks, and provides absolutely no feedback. With effort, a B-grade can be achieved, but be ready for boredom and frustration. Not recommended.
She is nice and her tests aren't "killer", as many people have said here. It's good to keep up with the readings! I'm currently taking it in summer school (almost done!). Taking it in the summer would be a GREAT idea because there are no assignments/essays. ONLY 3 tests and a tutorial presentation. Easy class, helpful prof, but really boring!
This proff is a joke. Tries to be funny and make the class fun, but really sucks at it. The worst proff I ever had. Her teaching is reading right off her notes. She is sooooo picky at marking and expects her students to be top critical thinkers. Yawns while teaching and tells students to shut-up. Amazing course, but a terrible proff. wish she left
Heather is easily accessible to students and she has a genuine interest in helping students succeed in the class. She is very fair and compassionate. I appreciated the class and it has been one of my best experiences at York thus far.
good prof, shes really into the course, but really into herself. She tends to get off topic, but its a good break from the material. ANDREA was an amazing TA, anyone who takes this course get andrea, she is soo understanding and will do anything to help her students
Heather is not only a great professor, but also a wonderful person. She is kind, considerate, and a great listener. Heather is always eager to help and she has a passion for helping others.

she is a great prof. explains things very well and is extremely helpful. her assignments are actually fun. she is a very nice person
Heather is a good professor. She is very cheerful and tries to make the course fun for students. I did not like that she read word for word off the slides but otherwise she was great!
As dry as the course material is, she tried to make it as interesting as she could. I thought the course was really easy and that her tests were extremely fair. She even took into consideration when midterms for other courses would be and scheduled her exams for a couple weeks after.
EXTREMELY HARD MARKER!!! SHE'S BUBBLY, WHICH IS NICE, BUT LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING. EVERYTHING IS DONE ONLINE AND SHE'S STRICT WITH PAGE LIMITATIONS AND HER WORD COUNTS...YIKES!
This class was amazing! And Heather made it interesting. She is a great prof and is always willing to help her students. I find shes the only prof at York that actually cares! I would take every course at york with her if I had to
Very nice prof and shes only strict if you don't submit assignments on time and skip classes. Otherwise, she's a really nice prof. I got an A in her class.
She's a very nice prof, very enthusiastic and bubbly but I have to say she's a hard marker in the 4th year class I took with her.
AVOID HER! She is nice, but a HARD MARKER. She expects 4th yr work for 1st yr course. She deducts 1% for every late, absence. she made us do a HUGE (social research methods) ORIGINAL empirical research project (15% ) + 3 exams + group presentation! I was a straight A student until I took her class! Her exams are KILLER!! all essay questions!
Difficult course with quite a bit of work. A lot is expected. Heather is a nice professor though, she likes to talk (warning for some people). Strict as well, so be careful with that. The course is overall not uninteresting, I did like it.
heather's a great prof. she's very clear with her notes. she's organized. her class consist of a group paper and presentation, online mini assignments, a final paper. it's an interesting class.
Seems like a nice prof, but she is a hard marker and has ALOT of expectations. She talks alot and tries to make the class interesting but fails. Overall a good course but taught wrong.
Very Good Professor! She loves group work and internet assignments. She always posts her notes in the moodle. She always checks attendance and remembers each students' name. Very clear about the course concept and expectation.
Heather was a good professor and she cares about her students. There is a fair amount of work, but it is a 3rd year course!! Also, she marks fair..you have to put effort into the assignments, you won't get a good grade for mediocre work people! Overall, nice professor.
bird class, prof is very helpful and cares a lot for her students' success!!!!
Heather is a fantastic teacher--she clearly loves what she teaches. She was incredibly helpful, her tests were fair, the assignments were pretty heavy but a good grade is within reach. Overall, a good experience.
Probably the worst class I've ever taken because of Heather. She goes off topic all the time, she doesn't explain things enough. Her test review is HORRIBLE. It basically looks like this... Study chapter 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 and 12. Thats it. Great help! Honestly. Do not take a class with her. You will suffer
Only writing this to save someone the agony. AVOID TAKING RESEARCH METHODS WITH HEATHER. Even my TA thought she wasn't teaching the course right. Absolutely no laptops allowed in her class, which is INSANE considering she goes over so much content during lectures. She's very unorganized when teaching and babbles. Just avoid her!!
Heather made every effort to make the lectures interesting. A lot of heavy assignments, but if you follow the rubric she provides, you will do well. Also, she provides good feedback if you request it. Overall, an excellent third year course!! N.B. What you put into this course is what you receive at the end.
Great prof! Delivers course material with clarity and enthusiasm. Just follow the course kit and her guidelines and you'll do well !
Heather was alright. I found her to be a little bit on the tedious side for an intro class, but what can ya do. Teaches directly off of her slides but 10% of the grade is attendance. Only real complaint is that I know so many things about her that I don't care to know because she shares her life... not my cup of tea and not what I paid for but w.e
Treats you like elementary school students, very specific and picky, making her a tough grader, teaches word for word on every slide, no electronics allowed in class, talks about her life, will get to know your name, during group work she will go around taking attendance to see who actually stayed.
worst prof at york
A great prof, surely isn't an easy marker but like all classes, you need to put work into it. She's here to help and she's very excited to teach. I do feel like an elementary student around her sometimes but she is also very inspiring with her personal stories. Very structured, helpful powerpoints, go to class, and don't be late.
Amazing Professor! She is very helpful!
Worst prof I've had. Spends more time going over class rules and regulations every class than teaching. Class was a disorganized mess to the point we spent an hour signing her attendance. Seems like she likes to point out unsupecting first years and humiliate them. Spends time going up and down the class looking for electronics. Awful.
worst prof ever, if you can avoid her! The assignment and exam is totally unfair! even if you study very hard dont expect a good grade
She is not approachable and usually complains, not allowed to use laptops in class at all and personally comes and tells you to put your phone away even before class time begins!
She's an extremely rude lady. Can't stop talking about herself and if she sees you using your phone in class you're gonna get called on and kicked out of her class. I regret taking this course with her! She's the worst prof I've ever got at york.
extremely rude and not helpful at all. Any prof would do except her!
To be honest wouldn't take this class again. Not a great intro to Soci AT ALL!
Honestly, despite these relatively bad reviews I found her to be a great professor. She was clear in her lectures and I always knew what would be on the test. She was so kind when I talked to her about family issues. The most understanding prof I've ever had. P.s- memorize each definition for the test and make your assignment very creative
Honestly, the grades you get shows how much work you put in. She is fair. Yes, she focuses on grammatical and style errors.. but she is just trying to help her student for her class and future classes. She is eager to teach, boring at times, but her lectures are educational. I will take her again. She is sometimes understanding to personal plight.
attendance matters, easy test if you are well prepare. participation.
Great prof! She is clear and always willing to help if you need it. You get marks simply for showing up to lecture.
Heather was a good prof. I found the content to be quite boring but that wasn't her fault. She is very strict with electronics, including laptops, which can be annoying but I see where shes coming from. She also takes attendance every class (with 2 free passes). No exams which I loved. Theres a few online posts (take seriously) and a group project,
i loved her she was soo sweet and she is an easy marker( just be sure with your spelling she is picky) test was sooo easy. just memorize her slide you will get an easy A
participated a lot but she marks attendance unfairly. If your attendance is 10% its based off of how much u talk in class, deducted by the number of times you skipped class. for example, if she decided to give u a 5/10 for attendance and participation, and you have skipped 5 classes, ur getting a 0%. She is an incredibly difficult marker. BEWARE
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. UNFAIR. RIDICULOUS. DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU TAKE THIS CLASS.
Liked the idea of not having an exam, or any tests of any sort. However, Heather is a difficult marker and her grading scheme does not make any sense what so ever. The course is an interesting course and would be easy to pass but Heather tends to over complicate the material being taught. It is not easy to obtain a good mark with Heather.
Very hard marker. does not reason with you or care about students.
just dont do it
do not take this course if you want to keep ur GPA high
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF U TAKE THIS CLASS DO NOT SKIP ANY CLASSES
LITERALLY THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. She is the worst presenter & only reads off PowerPoints. The class put me to sleep. The only reason I got an A in this class is because heather left half-way through.
She is unable to teach a class! Her grading scheme is up in the air and has nothing to add to her lectures besides reading off the PowerPoint. Also we spent so much money on the course kit and barely used it. Worst class I have ever taken.
As a person, Heather is lovely and a great sociologist, but not everyone is cut out to teach. Class discussions were good. Readings were heavy, assignments were method based (and LONG) despite it being a families class. Guidelines were unclear and wordy. Grading was inconsistent with syllabus. VERY hard grader. Prepare to hustle if you want an A.
First few lectures will have you thinking she's the best prof at the school but as the other reviews point out that is not the case at all. Very weird personality as well, has posters of Brad Aldrich for some reason. I would avoid
As a person, she's wonderful. She's very accommodating if you speak with her and gives helpful feedback. As a lecturer, she's bad. Extremely hard grader, so much homework and was very specific about the way she wanted it submitted and if you did one thing wrong you'd fail the assignment. It's confusing and no clarification. Exam was easy though.
I had her before and I didn't like her. When I saw her name on the syllabus I wasn't happy but I needed it to graduate. this time I understood her, she was helpful and she respected us as long as you respected her. she was very helpful because she knew a lot of us only took this course because it was a requirement. I actually enjoyed her class
This professor is not accommodating, takes marks off for minor things, and does not give breaks during lectures. She does not pause when lecturing to check if students are understanding the concepts and makes the homework too difficult and time consuming. Assignment instructions are very unclear and vague despite the syllabus being extremely long.
Prof Garrett can be particular, but if you engage with her teaching style, the class works well. The textbook and lectures are helpful, and using study tools like unstuck AI can really boost your understanding. Attendance matters, so stay focused and you'll do great.
She was not organized and she didn't know what she was talking about for a lot of the lectures. She doesn't give good instruction for assignments and the criteria was unclear. Assignments are based on assumptions of other classes taken but were not listed as a prerequisite for the class. I don't recommend taking her class , very boring lectures
Overloads you with homework to the point you can't even learn you just need to get her work done so you can work on other courses.
