Goes VERY quickly, tests are hard, expects you to memorize EVERY DETAIL of every topic covered (but it IS a physiology class), expect to go into office hours often in order to know exactly what she wants you to know
Horrible teacher. Tests are extremely hard for a lower division class. Doesn't hand back any tests or quizzes, and does not give out practice exams. Avoid this teacher at all costs. Does not explain well and has bad ways of teaching. GO to office hours if expected to understand anything.
A very interesting class, but difficult. She moves VERY FAST. I believe it is too much work for a lower division. Her tests are VERY hard and VERY specific...be prepared!
This class is interesting yet HORRIBLE. She expects you to know everything exams extremely difficult be prepared and yeah she doesn't hand back any test and no practice exams for you to review take with another teacher if possible.
Avoid this class if possible. I was interested in the material, but her tests are RIDICULOUS (about 60% class avg) and then she doesn't give them back to you to study off of b/c she's too lazy to make new questions each year. She's rude to students if you question her. You MUST read book to do well. Expects WAY too much for a lower division course.
Very interesting material if you plan on going into the medical field, but Ketchum expects WAY too much and tests are nearly impossible.I studied more for her tests than any other class I've ever taken and I still recieved B's on all of them. OH and the final is COMPREHENSIVE. A daunting, impossible task. You'll want to cry.
Is a horrible teacher. Is so bad with pacing that we had to skip the digestive, reproductive and immune systems! Take ANY other teacher if you want to learn about Physiology or enjoy the class at all.
Dr. Ketchum is a very sweet woman. She explains things carefully and even gives examples of real life situations. She also has amusing stories about insects because she does research with them. Ketchum is VERY helpful if you go to see her in her office. Even if you cannot make it to her office hours she will let you make an appointment.
This is a class that you need to study a lot for. She will make the concepts very easy, but will test from the book. She is a nice woman, but her test are pretty tough and requires a lot of understanding of the material. Despite this you will learn a lot, but this not a class for slackers or those who think they can just pull a late night for tests
I thought she was great, I hated zoo but looked forward to this class. She knows everyone by their first name, and is always cheerful and upbeat. I feel like she covered the material, and her quizzes prepared us for the midterm and final exam. She knows alot about what she is teaching, and is always able to throw in some personal examples.
Dr. Ketchum is FANTASTIC! She is a wonderfully caring professor with great concern for each student's welfare. Her lectures are interesting and she is willing to help. [plus, she's not hard on the eyes either! ;)] Take ANY class that she teaches. OU needs more professors like Dr. Ketchum!
Dr. Ketchum rocks!!! She is extremely helpful and caring. Her lectures are good and she genuinely cares about each student. Take her class! She's very funny and entertaining. Give this lady a PEPPER!!!
DR. KETCHUM RULES!!! I LOVED her class. She is an awesome teacher. She is really into what she does and truely cares about her studends. You might need to put some time into studying for the tests but if you attend class offten it's no biggy.
Let me start by sayng Dr. Ketchum is an awesome teacher. She is amazingly helpful when you go to office hours and if you disagree with your grade go in and you will get points most of the time if your argument is fair. On the bad side she makes you learn a couple chapters on your own which sucks come test time. You have to study for the tests.
Grades not even comparable to other professors of same material. Her grades were much lower. Might lie to you in order to keep her drop rates from increasing. Seems nice, but gives false hope about grades. Half of my lab class had dropped within two weeks of having her.
this class is hard. it requires alot of studying. i couldve done better if i had kept up with the lectures. i pulled out with a B though. She is very helpful and very considerate if you need to retake a test.
Ketchum is BY FAR the most fabulous professor I have ever taken at OU. Seriously. You learn an incredible amount of info in this class. You must attend class, it really helps to read the textbook, attend Action tutoring, and office hours. Use your resources! Ask questions. Listen to the podcasts. AND STUDY HARD. This class is hard work but WORTH IT
This class was ridiculous. She teaches it like it is upper division and says she does so, because she wants us to pass physiology classes we take after this. But, she needs to realize it is not and get over herself. I made a D in her class, but an A when I took pre-med physiology?
There is no question that Dr. Ketchum is a very good teacher. However, you absolutely must keep up with the material, or you'll just end up on this website complaining about it. She makes it very clear what she expects of you, and if you come up short of those expectations, you won't do as well as you'd like.
This was her first time teaching this class. She took the students comments and made it easier for all of us to understand. She graded each paper and made comments on each paper so we could make a great grade. I made a high "B".
She's a very helpful professor and knows her stuff. Her class, honestly isn't that hard if you keep up with the material. Much of the semester is concepts covered in Intro Zoo and the rest becomes so interesting that its hard not to learn something. She is super determined to help you, so ask for help if you need it. Just keep up, her pace is fast.
She is very helpful, and her class is hard if you make it hard. Just as with any other science class at OU, if you keep up with material you will do well. Slack off and you will be disappointed. Her class is not too bad if you study. Book and lab are helpful in understanding concepts. Try to put together clinical scenarios, it helps a lot.
This class is extremely hard. I used to study all the time but the exams were very difficult. If you are not a very good test taker, do not take this class. I have taken many other science classes at OU but this one was too much. I changed up my lifestyle for this class and that still did not help. After taking this class, I changed my major :(
By far the worst teacher I have had at OU. Her tests are extremely hard. She got behind and tried to cram everything into one test with two days left. Tests were more about critical thinking. Made an into level class VERY difficult.
By far the most helpful professor I have had at OU, she really wants her students to succeed. But you will not get the grade you want without trying, tests are really hard but she puts all her lectures online and there are attendance points, group grades, and homework grades. I love her!
She has a really weird, morbid sense of humor and likes to talk about her other jobs, which involve ticks and pig carcasses and digging up human corpses from graves. The tests are really hard but she usually curves them upwards and there is tutoring that you can go to for help. She's really nice and will help you if you ask her.
She is the WORST professor I have ever had. Her test are ridiculously hard. She is very rude and she is VERY interested in herself. The average test scores were about a 65. That is absurd. She really needs to reconsider her methods.Do NOT take her class
Ketchum is an amazing teacher. This class is not easy by any means, though. You have to put in A LOT if time and work to get the grade you want. I spent at least ten hours per week studying or attending her office hours and free tutoring sessions. She offers all of the help you could ask for, you just have to utilize it. Lectures are essential
Dr. Ketchum has a lack of teaching ability. For someone who had as poor of a GPA in college as she did and have no teaching ability is absurd to me. She is conceited, self-absorbed, and unfair. I've worked hard in this class, and will have to struggle to make it out with an A. As a 4.0 Pre-Med student, this is uncommon, and reciprocal of her.
Honestly, Dr. Ketchum is one of the best teachers I have had so far. Yes, her exams are difficult but that's because she is preparing us for the challenges ahead. She provides PLENTY of opportunities to get help and makes the lectures relevant and understandable. Easily, a 10/10 on preparing me for future classes.
Rude teacher! She fell behind on her teaching so made students teach themselves. Her test questions were very unclear to say the least. DON'T take her. She should have stuck to research because she doesn't have teaching skills or respect for her students. She thought the class having a 60% avg was good. She needs to reconsider her teaching methods.
This Teacher did not relate to the majority of her students. Her test were extremely hard and were nothing like her lectures in class. She was rude and overall unprepared to teach this course. Do Not Take Her
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. Stay away.
Worst teacher I have ever had! Self involved and horrible at teaching. Always loved science but this woman made me hate it with a passion. Grades with a fury and makes tests impossible to pass. Assignments are failed if partner names aren't in alphabetical order and lectures are nothing like the exams. Gave no room for success. DONT TAKE HER!!!!!!!
Hardest class I have ever taken. Very, very particular over small things and will give out zeros if not done EXACTLY her way.
Hardest class I've taken so far. The subject itself is hard but the main problem is the amount you are required to learn on your own. Great in explaining when she actually lectures but most of the class time is spend doing activities. Very open to helping you outside of class but if I personally work and dont have time for that or the action center
Ketchum is nice, but she makes the subject pretty difficult. However she does record and post her own lectures on D2L which is a plus. If there is another professor offering the course though, I'd probably look into them first before going to Ketchum.
Taking this class with her was horrible. She makes tests so difficult and each question is about a paragraph. If you work don't take her class. You won't have time to go to all her "optional" office hours, tutoring, and action centers. She enjoys seeing her students struggle in class. She's a nice person but has ZERO teaching ability.
This class sucks. Change your major now while you still have the chance!
You may think she is a terrible teacher but looking back 4 years ago, Dr. Ketchum was teaching me graduate level material. No matter what program you are trying to get into, know that she is going to have you prepared. Human Physio has always been a weeding out class; that will never change. Why should it be easy if you're aspiring to do Med?
Honestly, this was one of the hardest classes that I've taken at OU. She is a very harsh professor. If you don't study EVERY SINGLE DAY AND NIGHT you will not pass. I got a tutor, went to action tutoring and even her office hours and I still failed the exams. Lab is harsh as well. If you don't work hard with your group you won't pass the midterms.
The lectures did not prepare you for the test. Basically take another teacher if possible or take it at OCCC.
Dr. Ketchum is really enthusiastic and really wants to help her students in any possible way to get them through the course. She offers action centers and office hours and encourages her students to go to them. Most learning is done outside of lecture and her lecture consists of wrapping up the material. It's the course that's difficult, not her.
BUY THE TEXTBOOK. even when she tells you that you don't have to, do it. It will help you. become Ketchum's friend. Always prepare before class. This will be the hardest or one of the hardest classes you take as an undergraduate and she expect a lot out of you, but you learn so much. You will cry yourself to sleep, but it will be worth it.
I'm currently in medical school. I took Ketchum's physiology class way back in 2010, yes, 5 whole years ago. She taught so well that I still flashback to her lectures when considering a difficult physiology concept and I think of her fondly. She is a fantastic educator, her class is hard, but if you make it through it will stick with you forever.
If you are serious about the medical field, you NEED to take Dr. Ketchum. She is fantastic at explaining concepts and makes it easier to learn difficult things. Yes it is hard, yes you will have to study a lot, but "newsflash" you are absolutely going to have to fully understand these concepts in your profession so you will thank her later!
This class is easily one of the hardest classes I have taken to date. Lectures are only 50 minutes long and it is so important to go to class because she gives clicker points mostly everyday and those can help your grade. You HAVE to go to office hours, action centers, tutoring, and appointments with her if you want an A. It is doable but not easy.
Human Physiology with Dr. Ketchum is the hardest class I have taken at OU. Be prepared to learn most of the material outside of class for lecture is only 1 hour long 3x per week. Take advantage of office hours and action center tutoring. Tests were very hard even if you prepare and study for them. Make sure all your effort goes into this class.
Don't be discouraged by the people who didn't do well in the class and therefore rated it poorly. This is one of the most fascinating and difficult classes you will take but it is do-able and Ketchum is an incredible professor. Get a good study group, definitely don't get behind on material, go to office hours and action center, and you'll be fine!
GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS, ACTON CENTER AND TUTORING!!! I cannot stress this enough. I had a 65 in the middle of the semester and decided to change my work habits and now going into the final with an 81! You HAVE to put effort into this class. She is not good at covering all the material in class AT ALL. Get ready to teach yourself for every exam.
Dr. Ketchum definitely knows her stuff, but she's pretty bad at conveying this to the class in a way that is easily understandable. Going to Action Center and office hours helps, but you'll spend the majority of your time teaching yourself concepts that you won't need to know at any other time in your life. Take with a different prof if you can.
Dr. Ketchum is the worst. She expects you to teach yourself 75% of the material, and seems to find enjoyment in finding the most absurd reasons to take off as many points as she can. I had an A test average, did well compared to my peers on everything else, spent HOURS studying each week, and still had on chance of getting an A. DO NOT TAKE HER
This class is not that difficult. If you want to go into the medical field it will prepare you extremely well, but you have to have a passion for it. Work hard and you will get the grade you deserve. Study smart, focus on the information you don't know and think about how if you alter a situation how it will affect the system as a whole.
Dr.K is so nice and helpful, there is no way to make this class easy. Go to AC, and office hours. DO THE REVIEW SHEETS. Do all the handouts.
Dr. Ketchum's class was easily the hardest class I have taken so far, but also one of the most helpful. If you can't make it through this class, you will not make it in the health field. Go to action center, tutoring, and office hours. Ketchum and her TAs are extremely helpful and approachable, and you will benefit from going to talk to them.
Dr. Ketchum's class was one of the hardest classes I have taken at OU. However, she is a fantastic teacher and is helpful if you go into office hours. Her tests are the hardest part and you need to do the review sheets and look over them constantly to do well. Also, the final is more straight forward than all of the other tests, so it wasn't to bad
Wow. Best teacher ever. Care a lot about her students. But wow, she is a tough grader and Physiology was the hardest class I have taken in my College Career.
This class was tough but very doable, which was shocking to me considering what I heard going into the class. Pay attention in class, DO the reviews, and ask her questions if you get confused on the reviews and you should be totally fine. Also, exams are NOT nearly as hard as her in class quizzes, so don't freak out when you fail like I did lol.
This is the hardest class I have taken at OU. There is an A TON OF WORK more than you will ever expect. She is a good professor and cool but there is a lot of outside work and the labs and lab quizzes are hard. If you dont put time and effort into this class you wont make it. But, you will come out of this class knowing how to learn . Hard but good
Ketchum is honestly a horrible professor. She cares a lot about her students but requires way too much work for a 2000 level course. The similar 3000 level course of this class requires much less work and time. Ketchum is a very likable person she just has extremely unrealistic goals for her students.
Ketchum is horrible. I got an A in the class and I don't recommend taking her. She says she "cares" but her students grades say otherwise.
By far one of the toughest classes offered at OU. However Dr. Ketchum does a fantastic job of giving students the resources to succeed. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and it definitely prepared me for my future.
By far my favorite Professor at OU. The class can be difficult, but if you put in the effort you will get the grade you desire. Dr. Ketchum is really friendly and truly cares about her students. If you don't understand something she will work with you until you do! The lab quizzes can be hard, but only if you don't study adequately before.
Dr. Ketchum really cares about her students. She'll work with students personally. Her classes are TOUGH. But I've learned more in the few classes I've taken with her than all my other college classes combined. If you're looking for an easy A, beware, but if you're sincerely interested and want to learn, you're in the right place.
By far the most difficult class I've taken, but also by far the best professor I've had. She is so passionate about Phys and it makes it enjoyable. Lab quizzes are hell and there's no way around those, but they can be manageable if you study. Go to her office hours! She will spend time with you until you understand your questions!
Dr. Ketchum is possibly the worst professor I've had up to date. While she knows her stuff, this class is ABSURD for in INTRO to physiology class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I am a straight A student and am going to have to retake this class and guess what, I WONT BE TAKING IT WITH KETCHUM. learn from my mistakes, and DO NOT enroll in this class.
I find physiology very interesting, but i hated this class. Her tests were beyond difficult & each question is very time consuming. She also moves way too fast with the material. She expects you to have the next unit's homework done before we have even taken a test over the past unit. I learned a lot, but was extremely disappointed in this class
Absolutely do not take this class with Dr. Ketchum. She is the hardest professor I have ever had in college, and so are her GTA's. No matter how much I studied, went to her and the GTA's office hours, went to Action Center, and met with my own tutor, I did terrible on every quiz/exam. She seems to not care whether or not you pass her class.
Ketchum is intriguing to watch teach. She is smart & her lectures are entertaining. However, she will tell you herself she is trying to trick you on tests. With knowledge like that, you second guess yourself on answers you know. I loved what I was learning but her teaching & test style is completely unbalanced. She does not care about your success.
No class caused me as much pain as this one. Dont even think about taking physiology with her she acts like she cares but grades unrelenting. Lowest grade on a test was 90 but still had no shot of making an A. She is the worst. Do the test reviews even though they take forever if you unfortunately are stuck taking this class.
Dr. Ketchum is a really amazing professor. She is super kind and incredibly knowledgeable about her field. She is a really fun professor to have. The class has 2 exams, 4 large group projects, and smaller assignments. There is plenty of work for class but the work is really fun and exciting (every case is a mystery patient with unknown diagnosis)
Class had lots of potential and I got a lot out of it. However, the amount of time spent on it was far beyond that of any 3 credit hour 2000-level course I have ever taken. Also, dr. ketchum is super nice in person, but is absolutely brutal when it comes to grading. tldr: Absurd amount of work, hard grading, but good class
She can be demanding but really wants to work with you and help you succeed. If you have trouble go into her office hours and she will help you. Listen to her feedback and build time in to get your papers critiqued by her and you will do great. Also, do not skip class and participate in discussions. This perspectives is not super difficult.
Dr. Ketchum was my favorite professor I've had at OU! She took such a genuine interest in her students and made the subject interesting. Her Perspectives class was intellectually stimulating, and she was easy to talk to in office hours about papers, the material, and life. Dr. Ketchum is a great teacher and person; her class is a MUST take course
I took Dr. Ketchum's Disappearing Insects for my Honors Perspectives and I absolutely loved her! She expects a lot from her students, but she's also very kind and understanding of every person's circumstances. She focused on student discussions in class and, despite a scary syllabus, was always willing to listen to new ideas and adapt the course!
This is by far the hardest class Ive ever taken. I took this class years ago. This class is not for the weak if you have the option to take it elsewhere Id suggest that. Shes really interesting to listen to but makes the tests very difficult. You have to eat, breathe, and sleep physiology. Good luck. Youll have nightmares about this course.
AVSM is normally a Biostation course but was online this semester. Regardless, Dr. Ketchum is amazing and truly cares about you as a student. She wants you to learn but have fun. She's a tough grader but gives great feedback. This class is fast-paced (2 wks) and hands on but very rewarding. Recommend for anyone interested in bugs, vet/med science.
2nd honors class I've taken with Ketchum and I adore her. She gives AMAZING feedback and is extremely supportive in and out of class. Also nice that she is willing to extend deadlines if you just ask. A lot of reading, but expected as the class was discussion based. If you show up, read, and participate, you'll do well. Favorite OU prof!
You could do amazing in this class and still drop a letter grade due to the final presentation. It's unfortunate she grades so tough on the final considering she doesn't give us any examples of what the presentation should look like. I appreciate how she gives feedback on everything which is helpful but man, grade fell 5% after the final. Unfair.
I think this was a tough class. But, I wouldn't have wanted to take this course with anyone else. She is so responsive and helpful. The lectures were discussion style and you HAVE to put in work to get a good grade. She has a clear grading criteria and gives so much feedback on assignments. The TA was great & it was a very interesting class!
Dr. Ketchum is by far my favorite professor I have had at OU. She is extremely kind and understanding to her students you just have to communicate with her. Don't be afraid to ask for help!
Dr. K is amazing! She made me love a topic while also making me hate bugs even more. Her lectures are amazing and really you just need to show up to class and get those easy points. Explains everything well, is always available and actually cares and loves what she does. Super hands on class, take advantage of open lab and asking questions.
I took her intersession course and it might have just been this way due to COVID but it was very group presentation heavy. I had an A the whole time until the group final project and because of an unprepared group member, we bombed it and I ended with a B. She is very nice but I am not a fan of the type of grading.
The reviews in this course are a little dramatic tbh. If you put in the effort and actually LISTEN to how ketchum says to study instead of being arrogant you’ll do completely fine. Most of the reviews are from students who are not used to hard science courses and are lower classmen but i can assure you this professor is better than others.
Dr Ketchum is smart and it is obvious that she knows a lot. However this course is the most difficult one that I've taken in college. After hours of studying and getting help I still managed to do poorly. There was too much material to study for a physiology course and the exams are difficult. It's impossible to do well with how harshly she graded.
You should take physiology with Ketchum if you want to have the most miserable semester of your life. To name just one reason why she is a sorry excuse for a professor: she could not care any less about her student's well-being, in fact she takes pride in your academic downfall. If you want to sacrifice all joy in your life, take this class!
This class was HARD. I spent hours everyday trying to learn the material on top of everything else she gave us. The tests were nearly impossible and she tries to trick you on the questions. If you want to keep up with the lectures then be prepared to spend a lot of time outside of class learning it on your own. This class is doable, but challenging
I liked Ketchum and this class but it was just difficult The exams are hard and I even went to office hours, tutoring, action center every week My biggest tip would be to go to office hours for ketchum and the lab TAs.Lab was probably more difficult than the lecture section. Make sure you get a good lab TA because that can make or break your grade
The way she teaches her classes are absurd. She goes through the lecture slides fast and doesnt take time on them. Her exams are nothing like what we go over in class. Office hours and tutoring didnt even help. She doesnt care about the well being of her students and was fine to announce that people barely pass her class. Shes brutal. Do not take.
VERY tough grader, on paper and vocally! Don't expect grace or flexibility on anything for any reason. Rubrics and feed back are given far too late to be helpful. The environment she creates is scathing, abrasive, and condescending. Great opportunity for professional lab work experience on her other projects, if you're a good actor.
Dr. K is the most caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, fair professor I've had here at OU. I took her comparative vertebrate anatomy class and though it was challenging, she was always willing to help. There is no textbook so it's important to show up for lecture or you wont know anything for the test. By far the best professor I have ever had.
Dr. K is one of the best professors at OU. Class is tough, but her lectures are amazing and she's extremely caring. Gives extra credits since lecture and lab practicals are difficult. She's always available outside of lecture/lab. She's also funny and friendly. Take her course, she's amazing!
Dr. Ketchum is so sweet and very positive. I was in her FYRE class, so lectures weren't typical, but I still enjoyed the things she had to say to us.
Dr. Ketchum is a really sweet person and I think she really cares about her students. She graded FYRE mostly based on the mentor evaluations and a few short essays. She did take off 9 points because I used contractions, but it didn't really affect my grade. She is overall a great teacher and this was a super chill class!
This was for the FYRE program, so this was not a typical class, but Dr. Ketchum was incredibly helpful and kind!
An average professor overall, although I can't speak to much since this is not a typical class. She seemed somewhat nice, although I did feel she was a bit condescending during one interaction with her. Apart from that, she's not the worst if you have to take a class with her.
Prof. Ketchum is a sweet and caring instructor. Her FYRE class was chill and engaging. Grading was mostly based on mentor evaluations and short essays. unstuck AI was a big help for study prep, along with the free textbook. Overall, a great class!
Although this class was not a typically class style, it was a fun class if you genuinely want to be there. It's important that you stay on top of your work and complete 6-10 hours a week. If your mentor wanted to do more than the maximum amount of hours, tell them no!!
