Awesome teacher. She's always available to meet with students after class. She makes you read and think! I like this class.
Pretty hard class but you will gain a lot from it. Tons of reading and discussion requirements, but if you like history take this class. If you try you will be fine!
terrible
Shes not easy thats for sure There is too much material covered for just 2 tests (needs to be broken down to 4) there is alot of reading & two 3-4 page papers. I wouldnt recommended her to others. She is a clear communicator but still too much work, she thinks students should have 4-6 hrs of HW per class per week, seriously she said that in lecture
She is not a good teacher. Her lectures are dry, read from a piece of paper, too fast to take notes, and do not relate to the textbook information. Her TAs that teach our section classes are much better than her.
I absolutely hate this class. She gives quizzes every day so that she can make it mandatory for everyone to go to class. She acts like she is on a power trip and can not stand for anyone to do anything else but pay attention to her. She takes things away from students like we are children when it has nothing to do with the class! Do not take her!!!
I hate this class. Lecture is BORING!!! All she does is read from a piece of paper and acts as if she could care less about history. Lecture quizes were supposedly "random" but she gives them at the end of EVERY lecture. Text book reading are a big part of the class, but they have nothing to do with lecture. THIS CLASS IS BORING!
This class sucks!! If you take this class you just might shoot yourself!! It is so boring. I have never had such a B**** for a teacher. She calls people out for texting or readying other material and tries to take them from you.
Dr. Kopelson knows what she is talking about but her classes are very boring! The TAs are helpful though and most of your grade depends on them! The tests are very very hard but if you take notes and listen and attend most classes you will be fine! She will take up your cell phone if you are on it in class though!!
This class is awful. Dr. Kopelson reads from a piece of paper throughout the ENTIRE LECTURE-SO BORING! There is SO MUCH unneccessary reading. I felt like I was back in high school b/c she'll go around the room & try to take up cell phones/other materials in a class of 200, like we're babies! My TA is the only reason I did okay. DON'T TAKE HER!
She is not a very good teacher. It got to the point where the students had to ask for visual aid to understand what the heck she was talking about. Very boring and TAs are responsible for your grades. You have to read the books and even though attendance isnt required she has a lecture quiz at the end of every class.
Dr. Kopelson is a very good professor; however, her voice is very monotone and sometimes her lectures are boring. She tries her best to incorporate pictures and movie clips into her lectures. I would reccomend her to students who enjoy a challenge.
She definitly knows what she's talking about, but didn't make the lectures very understandable. Several people asked what would be on the midterm and she told them (and the class)just to study everything (like that helps!). Our midterm was curved about 10 points (and we had the option of EC) because she made it so hard!
You HAVE to read the books to do well in the class, and she requires 5 books. She gives large reading assignments every week for section, which you usually take a quiz on. Class is not mandatory, but there are always lecture quizes. The only good thing is that she gives the essay question before the test. VERY CHALLENGING!!
This professor was not personable at all! She was very rude and not helpful at all. I would never take a class taught by her again. She does not seem to care at all about the students. To be honest, I was scared of the woman!! I loved history until I took her class! She needs to loosen up a little!!!Very boring class!!
Hardest class that I've taken at Alabama. She doesnt do anything but confuse her students. Thank goodness for my TA, or else I would have failed the class. Your required to read 5 books and to write papers that are HARD! you have to turnitin.com. She said the midterm was on everything covered, which was A LOT for only 10 multiple choice questions
History was one of my favorite subjects until I had this woman. I think she believes she is teaching a 400level honors class which was a brutal reality to her when all 250 ppl in the class failed the first test. Her class/reading multiple text books and writing 2 VERY HARD papers comprised of about 80% of my overall work. Never take her.
The worst professor in the history department, i have taken two of her classes, i am an A student and have resulted in a C grade, do not take any classes with her as her teaching style is horrible. that is my only warning.
Make sure to take notes from start to finish. The outline of her lectures (twice a week) are your study guide for the tests. There are only 2 tests (midterm and final) so study up!
She is one of the worst professors I have ever had. You don't know the meaning of anal until you write a paper for her. I make pretty good grades and am about to graduate; The most irritating thing is that I take time away from more important classes to deal with her and the ungodly amount of reading assigned. It's not feasible to read that much.
Book use is very heavy. I would have to agree with everyone else on this board.
Absolutely dreadful professor. She is very anal and assigns so much reading it will take away from other classes. One of the worst professors I have had, but my TA was good so that helped my grade.
Awful
She was a challenge in the HY 400 course, but very understanding. I would go and talk to her about my paper and other information. She was really engaged and concerned. The 400 level was a writing course. So there was LOTS of writing and reading. I like her. She is VERY helpful and personable!
I took the 300 level interim history course with her. LOVED IT! It was so much fun! It was a really laid back lecture course with mandatory readings and 3 papers and a movie about the objects we knitted. Dr. K is very personable and nice!
Attendance isn't mandatory but there are pop lecture quizzes so you really should go. Who knew a history class involved so many written papers? She made the class a whole lot harder than it needed to be. The T.A.s were nice but definitely take a different teacher than her!
I hated this class. We had extremely too much work to do. She was a good lecturer but other than that it sucked. I actually dropped this class and took it at a community college during the summer.
Take another professor!!! The lectures aren't bad, you should go b/c there are random quizzes. I don't mind having books to read, but she assigned an INSANE amount. Even my TA thought our books were to advanced for a 200 level course- wouldn't have passed without him. Very difficult paper topics also!! No time for my other classes.
She rambles on and on for about 40 minutes and with the last ten minutes of class she actually says what you need to know. She moves very fast, and its hard to take notes. She will make you get up and dance if your phone goes off in class, and she will not let you do anything else but her work in class. So sit in the back if you want to text.
shes terrible way harder than other teachers, mean and expects WAY TOO MUCH for students who HAD to take her class to graduate.she makes you read a ton and to pass you have to go to class bc of clicker questions. definitely avoid her class if possible.
I really enjoyed her as a teacher. She can be kinda intimidating but the TA's were awesome! Class isnt mandatory but she does give clicker quizzes that are apart of your grade. So I strongly recommend going to class. As long as you do all the readings and participate in discussion, you will do fine!
Dr. Kopelson is a very nice lady and if you go talk to her, she is VERY willing to work with you. She IS very confusing tho and loves to ramble on but if you just go ask her after class she will explain it and work with you on just about anything. She doesn't like cell phones, but i never saw her make anyone dance
Attendance to lectures is not mandatory, but recitation attendance is. Tests cover a large amount of material. A decent amount of opportunities for extra credit. Tests involve A LOT of writing. Lectures are on tegrity, which you have to listen to even if you go to class because she talks very fast.
Great Teacher! She is awesome for anyone how isn't a HY major looking for an easy class. She doesn't require a book. She does do 3-4 group projects which I enjoyed. Over one of the best teachers I've had as a HY major
I took HY300, Native American history, with Dr. Kopelson. The tests are relatively short and easy, you get a study guide before each one, and as long as you attend class fairly regularly and read the assigned readings you can get a good grade. However - she definitely assigned a disproportional amount of assignments to my other classes
Overall she is a good teacher. Not the most interesting lectures (she would ask the class questions during them and that's the only time we paid attention really). She also rambles so right when I would pay attention I would lose her. But her tests are straight forward and if you study you'll be fine.
Gave way too much homework for a 100-level intro class, even if it was Honors. We had to buy tons of books, only 1 was interesting. A surprisingly easy grader, though. Lectures were really fast, and hard to understand at times. Prepare for loads of papers and projects.
My problem with Dr. Kopelson is not only the ungodly amount of work and reading, but the things she lectures on. She lectures about the margins of U.S. History and doesn't teach you anything worthwhile. Somehow she manages to create way too much homework for parts of history that don't matter. Way too hard of a class. Avoid like the plague.
signed up for this site just to warn unsuspecting students about this class. Its the tests that make this class so difficult. Tests are almost impossible and are entirely written. Since it is a 100 level class I didn't expect to have to put all this time towards her class which really hurt my GPA. Dont take this class unless you want to cry a lot
Your TA is your best friend. Kopelson herself is terrible in regards to projects, so ask as much as you can about the projects given. Tests are written and graded by TAs so it's best to be friendly with them. Honestly, It's Kopelson who makes the class horrible. She's not a good teacher at all. Also, she never uses the textbook and its useless.
She is very clear cut with her lectures. They may go by fast and sometimes tough to follow but she adds all information to Blackboard and all lectures are online tegrity. That being said I still believe it is important to be in class most of the time to really get everything you need. There's recitation and that is who grades tests and projects!
Dr. Kopelson is a tough teacher. I took her for Native American history and it was tough. She always available to help you with anything regarding your essays or papers. She gives study guides, but they aren't much help just because it is so much detail. Participation is a HUGE part of your grade. She adds 200 points at the end of the semester.
Dr. Kopelson was a very tough instructor. I had her for HY300 (Handmade Nation-History of Knitting). I went expecting it to be a fairly easy course. Boy, was I wrong. There was tons of reading to do every night. On top of that, you were required to finish projects and a final presentation. I learned a lot, but will probably not take her again.
When the entire class is discussion on readings no one understands its really hard to learn anything. She's a fan of calling out people she knows don't understand. her assignments are pointless. I'm sitting here studying for the final and realized I've learned nothing. She ruined what could have been a great class.
She goes into great detail about certain issues. Her tests are 100% lecture, with a small bit of required readings. There are 3 projects which require reading a separate book, but they were interesting. If you email the teacher she will help with anything you're confused about. The TA does all the grading, so be nice. Definitely go to lecture.
To give you an idea about how hard the tests in this class are we were asked to memorize 64 terms and are only tested on four of them for the final. Also her timing for tests is the worst. We had a test the Monday after Spring Break which she herself didn't even show up for. Also had to buy 5 texts for this class, never taking another UA history.
Tries to work with you, but does not take your personal schedules into thought. I have never had a class as tough as this one. I worked my butt off to stay on top of things in this class, and it still was not enough. I only needed this class to fulfill my history requirement. I bought 4 "textbooks" and never used them.
Makes you read a ridiculous amount for homework, gives reading quizzes everyday, and gets annoyed that no one discusses the readings during class. Her lectures suck and she expects you to know terms you never learned for tests. She grades the reading quizzes extremely hard. Its impossible to get a 100% even if you read. DO NOT TAKE HER EVER.
Seriously the worst teacher I've ever experienced! Her lectures are AWFUL, the amount you have to read weekly is ridiculous (she strongly believes that shes the only teacher and class you take) and there's absolutely no electronic devices allowed (she is so rude if she sees one). Do not ever take this class!!!!
she sucks. the exams are so broad and hard. She puts up a power point with nothing on it and talks extremely fast and expects you to take notes word for word on what she's saying. Her tests are impossible to study for. She's by far the worst teacher I have ever had.
This teacher is the worst lecturer I have ever had. She spends time on the least important things and I learned absolutely nothing from this course. Her lectures are impeccably boring and her class is super hard. If you can, DO NOT TAKE HY 103 with her. I even took APUSH in high school and that class was 100x easier than this one.
This is the hardest class that I have ever taken. 10/10 do not recommend. Her lectures last the entire fifty minutes of class and there is a ton of reading to do. I am serious if you have the chance to take another professor, DO IT!! I am not one to complain, but when I do it is bad!
She is by far the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. She puts up a powerpoint with maybe 10 words on it and then talks ridiculously fast and non stop for the entire lecture. She gave us OVER 200 terms to study for the midterm for 3 of them to be on the test and 13 pictures for 1 of them to be on the test. Impossible to pass this class: 0/10.
Her PowerPoints have nothing to do with the lecture and she barely lectures on the key terms which will be on the test. Reading assignments are excessive to say the least. Other assignments are also ridiculous. She assigns creative assignments like designing a monument or creating a video rather than just allowing you to write a simple essay.
Most of the people giving bad reviews are the ones who never come to class/wait until the morning of section to read. Kopelson is by no means good. But if you go to class, take good notes and read it's really not that hard. She's super EXTRA and so are her tests. If you're lazy & not one to study/care for history, take someone else. HARD but doable
She is a fairly good teacher she just likes to ramble on sometimes in lecture and her section TA's seem to care about their students and actually want to help us learn. She may seem intimidating to talk to at first but she really wants to help you. Reading is very important for section and if you read the morning of you will fail section quizzes.
Her lectures are not mandatory, and her powerpoint have nothing to do with what she discusses. Its hard to follow her in class, and you won't get anything when trying to study from them. Definitely a hard class and not worth my time, I wish I would've dropped and taken it with someone else. She also wasn't helpful when I emailed her several times.
The review below is mine, dont know how Awesome was the result it ended up posting with.. shes awful.
It took me forever to realize what I hated most about this class: obviously Kopelson is awful and all, but the thing that got me is that somehow she teaches a history class without an actual textbook. Like we had 6 BOOKS OF DOCUMENTS but no real factual info! She would spit facts in class that we needed to know but give us no real material!!
If you want to spend 9 hours reading a week to take a 5 question quiz for a lower division class and literally not know what is going on, then this class is perfect for you. Not one of my classmates knew what was going on. Her lectures make no sense, just a bunch of random facts that don't connect. My upper division classes are easier. Good luck!
I do not recommend taking her class. She does not use a textbook. Her powerpoints are extremely vague. She is constantly jumping around. High expectations but bad at helping students meet those expectations. She does not record lectures so if you miss something in your notes then good luck.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is so scattered and her powerpoints are so out of order. She doesn't even talk about what she is showing on the powerpoint. If you miss class you have to teach yourself because her powerpoints are SO vague. Her tests are so hard our TA felt sorry for us. Her 100 level class is taught like a 300 level.
Dr. Kopelson is an awful teacher. She puts up powerpoints with barely any words on them and expects us to write down EVERYTHING she says in class. By the way no computer are allowed. I stopped going to class because I was not learning a single thing. Thank gosh that I had an awesome TA who knew how to be merciful and knew how bad she was. Terrible
It's an intro course that's run like a 300 level class (my TA said so). The amount of info and reading is obscene. She tests you on everything but only likes to discuss what she knows. She's the type of person who's smart, knows it, and likes to show off. She calls people out in class and seems like she likes being known as a "difficult" teacher.
Kopelson is the best teacher to take if you are interested in Native American or womens history! This class was about early American women and while it was very tough, I learned a lot. I have taken her a couple of times now and I always learn a lot from her class. She likes out of the box projects too, like making videos.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Her lectures don't make any sense and she speaks too fast for you to even understand what she's saying.
This 103 level class is more work than any of my 300+ level classes. 60-90 pages worth of reading per week even on exam weeks. You will also be tested on the reading so there is no way to get out of it. On top of this, her lectures are a waste of time, they're super unorganized and worthless. Horrible class with a terrible professor.
Dr. Kopelson's class was just awful. She makes useless powerpoints with little info on them and expects us to write it down, but you cannot use a computer. Grades weren't fair, Gives us 90+ pages of reading, for a 5 question test. I would spend hours and still fail them. For a class that is 100 level, it was harder than any upper division class.
Bored at home during quarantine? No need to worry, she will ramp up the work load to keep you busy all during the entirety of the pandemic.
A ridiculous amount of homework for this just being a 100 level course. All of it is busywork and you barely actually learn anything
Worst professor I have had at UA. Does not care about what you have going on, even during pandemic. Will upload assignments extremely late but expect you to finish a weeks work in one day when she finally posts it. Singlehandedly caused for an unexplainable amount of stress this semester. More work in hy 103 than most 300 courses
I do not recommend ANY student take this class. Compared to higher level history classes I have taken, this 100 level class was made extremely difficult for no reason. This class was disorganized, the grading scale is not clearly defined, the readings became repetitive, and I honestly can not say what information I learned from taking this course.
If you have a choice do not take this class. The grading scale is very unclear for the readings and she makes the assignments extra hard with barely any time to complete it. She adds a bunch of fluff requirements to projects and essays that are unnecessary. TAs do most of the work for this class.
Take another professor if you can. I took this class for a history requirement and it ended up being over half of this semester's workload. Lots of weekly homework, assigns projects with barely any time to do them, and has very unclear grading. I wish I had dropped this class a long time ago.
She is very unprofessional in the way she speaks with her students. She gives lots of homework and very large assignments and waits till the day its due to assign them. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSS!!!
If you respect yourself do not take this teacher. She does not respect your time or sanity. She is a lazy lecturer. She is very rude to student. she gives unreasonable assignments. Just please don't do this to yourself. I should have dropped a long time ago. I'm a 4.0 student and im saying dont.
Do not take this class, I thought taking a class fully online would be beneficial considering I started to take classes for my major and I was so wrong. Kopelson assigns so much work over the course of a week and on a few occasions she didn't assign the work until 1 day before it was due. Does not answer emails in a timely manner.
This class is a ton of work and you will learn absolutely nothing. I have never had such a terrible experience with a professor. She is lazy and rude. Kopelson expects students to complete an unreasonable amount of work with little effort of her own. She has no respect for anyone else's time. The class was unorganized and honestly frustrating.
This class was unnecessarily hard, especially since it was online. She gave out so much reading as well as lecture videos, but would not post the material until two days before it was due. She is unsympathetic to her students even though we are all in a pandemic and have other classes. This is a level 100 course. Do not take her for your sanity.
Worst history teacher I have ever encountered. Does not teach , only gives out busy work, and the TA's are just as bad as the teacher.
She is the worst professor at the University of Alabama and it's not even close. She has no idea what she is doing. Class is basically hear read 10 stupid articles that are common knowledge then all class is going to be is talking about them. She gives more busywork than a brand new high school English teacher. she doesn't grade anything. She blows
if you start typing heather kopelson into google it autofills with "rate my professor" because how much this class sucks
Class is basically just her asking what we read the previous night. There is an over emphasis on preparing the legal history kids for law school that we were barely taught the history of Native Americans. None of the readings were challenging but the overabundance of them made them turn into a chore. Went in super passionate but became ambivalent.
Honestly incredible. Her class was like living in the twilight zone - it was as if a fourth grader who had a basic understanding of critical race theory decided to teach the "tragedy of Native Americans." She ironically gave less historical agency to Indian peoples then traditional academia. Assignments on 4 different websites. Comedy.
350 characters is not enough to describe how awful this class is or any of her other classes. She talks down to her students and is incredibly rude if you get anything wrong in class. She teaches like a middle school teacher. She writes every key word from the book that you say on the board as you go through the reading and thats class.
Rated both 1 bc its an easy class but shes a horrible teacher. No one knew what their grade was the entire semester. If a student performed the same way she did as a teacher they would fail out of school. Assignments on multiple websites. One is videoing yourself and its hilarious how pointless it is along with all the other assignments.
Possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. Calls students out randomly and asks them questions and will wait til they answer. Makes students do stupid assignments. This is only my second lecture with her and she is by far the worst teacher I've ever had. She's one of the teachers that ruin class. But at least she starts every lecture with Roll Tide!
Professor Kopelson's lectures were easy to understand and she is very passionate about what she is teaching. Lectures are not mandatory and are put online! There are no frequent tests/quizzes either! The TA grades most of your discussion videos, midterms, and projects. You do need to read a little bit. It is not hard to do well in this course.
Dr. Kopelson assigns many unnecessary readings that barely pertain to the class. In class, shes just going to make you feel like a straight idiot, staring across the room for minutes at a time, waiting for someone to give an answer, AND WHEN YOU GIVE AN ANSWER SHE DOESNT LIKE, you just get ignored and the room falls silent again.
She is not lenient at all. She made students read 250 pages of a book in 3 days. lecture is stupid and recitation is the only time you get any information, and all recitations are from her TA's.
DO NOT take her.Literally everything people have wrote is true. You have so many assignments that require you to go to different websites to access. Some of the readings are not even linked in blackboard. The TAs are not even helpful.Nothing makes sense.Again ,AVOID taking her.
If you want to be constantly stressed out, have to read so much to the point where you're sacrificing your grades in other classes, and overall want to cry, this is the class for you! This class is test-heavy and unless you can take time out of your day to study material that she doesn't teach in lecture, then chances are you are going to fail.
Save your GPA and your sanity and take this class with another professor. She doesn't care about students and acts as if her class is the only one you're taking. She assigns so much work to the point where that is all you're focusing on. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLAS!!!
Cannot put into words how awful. She is RUDE and gives an ungodly amount of work. Had to read 6 books including a textbook. REALLY stupid projects. Tests extremely difficult. Lectures so unhelpful. avoid kopelson at all costs.
Avoid at all costs, she teaches this class like it is the only one you have. Unless you want to be stuck reading 6 books and reading powerpoint that are absolutely useless then just don't take it. Her lectures barely give you any real idea on what is going on and you basically are just trying to remember dates and events.
Yaps all lecture long mostly about things that are irrelevant for assignments or tests and wastes time cold calling on people to give answers to questions we don't know a lot about. Takes all 50 minutes doing so. Only good thing about her lectures is that she starts them with Roll Tide. Do not take Kopelson
She lectures for the whole 50 minutes mainly rambling about irrelevant info... wastes time cold calling on people when we don't know a lot about the material...GIVES A BOOK REFLECTION ESSAY DUE THE DAY WE COME BACK FROM SPRING BREAK...doesn't let us keep our tests to see what we could do better on. Just a horrible professor who can do much better.
Lectures are awful. She yaps about topics that have nothing to do with the assignments given making attending lectures useless. While attendance isn't mandatory, she does give out random bonus points at random if you do attend class. She only has a midterm and final but LOTS of homework that is on units she will "discuss" that week in lecture.
Very confused the entire time, don't know what she's talking about in lecture AT ALL being just pictures and worrying if she's going to call you out. The midterm/final were so incredibly hard, just write and cry and pray. When emailing her about assignments, no answer. Shouldn't be a professor/should at least do A LOT of work to become a better one
If you thrive off of auditory teaching styles, shes your professor. however, if you are a visual or tactile learner, you dont stand a chance. She speaks, without stopping, no words on a board, nothing visual to look at, very few photos. For the extent of the lecture. She is very opinionated (politically), and it shows through her teaching
For a 100 level course it is extremely tedious. Lots and lots and lots of reading. Powerpoints consists of pictures with little to no context and lectures are recorded but not available (why). Pray that you get a Good TA or you might not do well in this class. If you zone out once in the lectures, you're lost without any references to go back to.
She teaches like this is the only class you'll take. 50 pages of reading WEEKLY, along with reading 4 documents a week. Lecture attendance isn't required but if you don't go good luck passing. She is rude to her students and continues to ask questions when we don't know what's going on because of how vague her PowerPoint is and how fast she talks.
listen to every single bad thing every other person has said about this professor. do not take her class at all costs and if she's the only option, wait another semester. tougher than almost every single upper level class i've taken and i used to enjoy history classes. lectures are confusing, so much reading assigned per week, exams are hard.. DONT
