Professor Kunkel knows exactly what she's talking about. Make sure you keep up with the notes and homework because they're your best friends for tests, which are the only recorded grades. I would suggest getting the student solutions manual for this course if you aren't so great at math (like me). For more info, see H. Beck (her maiden name).
Unless you already know calculus I would not recommend this professor as she is not very helpful and makes everything ten times harder than it is. Calculus is already a tough subject and her tests are extremely tough. I hope you are good at math.
Professor Kunkel knows her material very very well. When she lectures you KNOW she knows what shes talking about. However, she is very unforgiving and very tough professor. If you have taken calculus before then you might be okay with her. If not I suggest Andrea Jones for Math 200.
Very smart teacher however she moves fast and her tests are hard! You will think you understand the material then on the test she throws in problems you've never seen. I always got As in math my whole life but I have a C+ in her class. If it is your 1st time taking calc I recommend a tutor lots of studying and do homework. Go to HBeck for more info
She knows what she's talking about, but has a hard time communicating concepts to others. If you're not a math genius, I would stay away. What she does in class and what's on the test are totally different! Not very helpful during office hours either!
Honestly, she's a really good teacher. But if you're dumb in math(like myself) you will struggle especially on the test. One thing's for sure, you will learn. That's what I like most about her class. Oh and you have homework pretty much every night.
She is a really good teacher, but it is a hard subject. This was my second time taking this class, the first time was a different teacher, and I feel that I learned so much more this time around than the last mostly because of Ms. Kunkel.
I took Math 302 Fall 2008. The class average was D's on all tests she does not curve, she gives 5 computer assignments that are only worth 2%, Her tests are worth 20% and the final is 30%.Do not take her! She failed me and I really tried hard on all my exams. Her accent is hard to understand and she rushes through the material.
Kunkel is nice, but this class can be quite the pain if you are not a math person. The computer assignments are easy, but every thing else you really need to pay attention or your grade will suffer greatly. Do the homework! A major downside is that you cannot ask questions during class and you have to send her and email.
This teacher to me was definitely the best calculus teacher I had. If you do the HW and actually pay attention during class you'll do fine. I can't stress enough, do the HW. Class attendance is not mandatory but if you don't attend class, most likely your going to fail. Also I mean... come on... it's calculus... gotta study for it to get that A.
Mrs. Kunkel was one of the best instructors I've ever had. She is very approachable and really shows a genuine concern for the sucess of her students. I would reccomend her to anyone who is ready to tackle calculus.
She actually explains why you are doing what you are doing. She makes the connections to things you've already learned in the past and links it to common sense. When you have that knowledge you don't have to memorize formulas, it just becomes a puzzle (and she gives you the pieces.) Best math teacher I have ever had hands down.
awesome
The only thing you'll need your textbook for is studying or if you do the (non-graded) homework. Unless you're a math genius, I recommend doing the homework. Three tests that are 20% each, labs 10%, final 30%. The tests only have 10 questions, the test has around 20, so every question counts. She speaks very fast, so be sure to pay attention.
Great teacher, wouldn't trade her for another teacher. Wish I had more math classes to take in my degree.
She isnt the worst teacher neither is she the best. There are only 3 tests, which does suck. Quizzes would help but they aren't provided. If you think she's going to curve think again!Be prepared to listen carefully she talks very fast.If you are good at math take her; if not chose another professor!
She is helpful, talks fast, Material is Hard and the tests are TERRIBLE
Prof. Kunkel is a very hard grader, and goes quickly, but I can easily say she's the best math teacher I've ever had. Even though homework nor attendance is mandatory, you will do much better in the class if you keep up with the work. I've read many complaints about her accent, but personally, I understood her fine.
She is extremely helpful, if you have any problems she is more than willing to help you out. The tests are hard and there are no quizzes to help boost your grade. Hw is not mandatory but if you don't do it the material will get extremely confusing.
VERY GOOD MATH PROF. Actually does a fantastic job of teaching - helping you to understand as well as give you background info on why you're learning what you are. 3 tests, your final replaces lowest test grade if it is higher. No mandatory attendance, complab homework. Unfortunately left me due to pregnancy near end of semester but she was great!
She is a very good teacher, knows her materal very good & she is also very helpful. I really understood the notes during class, but the test were extremely hard. i didn't buy the book, but the hw really helps.i dont recommend her if your not good at math
The clearest notes I have seen a math teacher give. She works right from the book. She also has very good hearing, watch what you say! Highly recommend her. She doesn't really correspond that fast through email though.
I like her so much, she speak very quick and clear. She is very patient and nice. But her class is not that easy, if you are not really good at math, you need to do your homework.
This teacher goes fast!!! She is from Scotland and has a thick accent. If you have her make sure to keep up on homework and and test. She does care about the students though. Last class we had we took 30 out of the 50 minutes in class to go over questions we had the night before and she was more then willing to keep helping us.
She teaches pretty well. Definitely not an easy A though. She doesn't give quizzes or practice tests, nor does she make tests fairly easy. Her test contain problems with pretty difficult numbers to work with. You really have to understand this material 100% to do well in this class. I personally wouldn't take her class again.
This will be a challenging class if you do not have a good Algebra foundation. Make sure you get it straight by the first test. If you can make it through the 1st one, you can do the rest. ALSO make sure you do ALL of the online assignments, it will help your grade @the end. &please do the book practice problems. They help a great deal. Good luck!
great teacher! she is very clear and gives detailed notes. The test are very hard and there are no quizzes, so doing good on the test and completing the online hw are the only way to ensure a good grade.
Great teacher, although attendance is not required, going to class is IMPORTANT. take advantage of reviewing using your book and doing the homework., She gives you all the tools needed to succeed.
Excellent teacher who is well organized and demonstrates a passion for the subject matter. With that said, the course is not easy and the tests are difficult. She only administers 3 tests and a final comprehensive exam. You need to have a good grasp on algebra before starting this course, not much review given.
Mrs. Kunkel is a great and challenging teacher. If you don't do the homework or attend class, plan to get an F. The homework isn't graded, but it's extremely helpful! She's good at explaining, but she does talk kind of fast and she has an accent. Take her but only if you're prepared to work hard. You'll learn though.
One of the best teachers at providing perfectly organized notes. Write whatever she writes on the board. Only grades are tests and math labs. Study hard for tests!
She talks very fast. Her class is only 50 mins and she covers material very fast. the test are pretty challenging. if your not good in math, this is not the class for you.
An ok teacher that talks very fast. But if you have question she will gladly help you out.
Very good instructor. Test are difficult. Toughest Homework problems are on test so do homework. She goes over any homework problems the next class. Homework is not graded.
She takes the time to go over homework questions at the beginning of each class. Good at explaining things in a simple way that makes sense. Fair with giving partial credit on tests. Overall, highly recommended.
Very nice teacher. Easy to understand and helpful! Although her class is graded by several test, If you study hard, you can get a good score. Also, she will take out of your lowest score of tests and change it to your highest score.
Excellent math teacher, the best I've ever had. Punctual, clear, concise. She wastes no time and presents the material in an easy to learn manner. She makes her expectations for the test clear, never any surprises. She does speak a little fast.
Fantastic Professor! She will help you as much as possible, not an easy class.
Professor Kunkel is one of the best math teachers that I have had. She explains everything clearly and will go over and help you solve any confusions. Her class is not the easiest but if you put the time and effort you will pass. She tells you what to expect on test, no suprises
Great professor! Really has a passion for math. Takes the time to go over any homework you didn't understand. Really hates any kind of technology so don't plan to use anything other than a pencil and notebook for class.
Math is really hard for me and this is my second time taking business calculus. I had to drop last semester to save my GPA. She explains everything in terms that are easy to understand. Ample examples of every topic are given and she reviews homework. She gives ample help opportunities and I would definitely take her for every math I have.
Hardest math Ive ever taken. She should be teaching high school with her strict policies on phones and attendance. This is college. She is a great teacher, but not great if you dont understand math. She moves extremely fast and covers a lot of material. Absolutely no days off in her class. Wouldn't recommend.
She is perfect for people who suck at math. She's very thorough and takes you through examples step-by-step. If you still don't get it, she will slow down and answer your questions. I highly recommend you don't miss out on her lectures, because her tests are relevant to them.
This lady class was awful. I had to drop it because all of the homework, mymathlab , and test review work we did not compare to her test. All of her test were difficult. Before I dropped I had a D.
If you are not good at math, this class is not for you. Although, professor is nice and professional, her "technique" is another story. She goes through the material at a fast pace and the tests are pretty hard. I had a hard time keeping up with her during lectures.
Mrs. Kunkel is a nice teacher, and very sweet, but as it pertains to teaching... If you are not strong in mathematics, then she not the teacher for you. Talks fast and covers a lot! Definitely do the homework assignments if you take her, even though they are not graded. They will kinda help the test.
Hard class!! Very nice but too fast! Tests had a lot of word problems!!
She talks really fast and the way she explains problems are very confusing. It's not just her accent but that adds to the confusion. The test are hard, not much like the homework problems and somewhat like examples during lecture. I wouldn't choose her as a professor again.
This professor moves way too fast through the material, if you are not strong in precalc/ algebra she isn't the professor for you. Test questions are not as easy as the book problems she recommends. A lot of word problems on tests that are hard to work out in 50 minutes. Avoid her if you can.
I am not a strong student in math. I was completely scared when I signed up for this class, however I passed with a B. Professor Kunkel is very passionate about her teaching. She does move quickly, but she is always prepared for class, can answer any question without hesitation, and covers all necessary material for exams.
Prof. Kunkel is a great teacher, she makes calculus seem easy. She tries to help out by giving you points on tests if you attempt to try.
She is a great teacher. She thoroughly explains the terminology and does extensive examples so you understand the material. She has faith in her students ability to pass but to really get through her class exceptionally do all of the homework problems she suggest and show that you are putting effort in. She is more than willing to help you.
I HATE math and she is the best math teacher I've ever had! I had professor Kunkel for pre-calc and MATH 200. Be prepare to study, it's a math course and you can't learn math just by going to class. DO THE HOMEWORK, don't skip class and you should be fine.
Professor Kunkel is a very tough grader. Math is not my best subject I am a Marketing major and this class was very hard for me to pass. I had other friends in 162M as well and their teacher didn't even go over stuff the same as Kunkel, their teachers were more understanding. I would not take this professor if math isn't one of your strong subjects
Professor Kunkel is amazing! She's very thorough and excellent at explaining the material. She makes it so easy to understand and goes through multiple examples for every topic. I would take her for every math class if I could!
I would not recommend her if you are already struggling with math. She's very fast teaching her lectures, it's hard to process all the information at one time, and I pretty much had to go to tutoring and youtube to reteach myself the material. The was she explains her lectures are very confusing and hard.
One of the best math teachers I've ever had. She'll tell you flat out, if you don't like math the class won't be easy, but if you're willing to do some work she'll really help you understand and get a good grade. The homework problems are "suggested" but if you don't do them you'll be screwed. She goes slow and explains things well. Tests are hard.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. I cried after every test and almost every class. I'm not sure if it's her or the way she teaches but everyone in my class was struggling. You don't get a calculator or much help in this class. Even going to the math help center didn't improve my knowledge. I screamed when I found out I passed.
Professor Kunkel is one of the best professors at Old Dominion Uni. She definitely earns a lot of respect. She is a very fair professors and makes it her duty to make sure he students understand the material. The way she articulates her words and the energy she gives off once she start lecturing is what I love best about her. She is amazing!!!
Professor Kunkel is one of the best professors at ODU. Her lectures are very articulate, and you must pay attention or you will fall behind. The homework is "suggested", but I promise if you do them, and ask about them in class, you will do amazing. She gives amazing feedback and is very respected. GO TO CLASS or you won't pass.
Mrs. Kunkel a Scottish accent so some people have a little difficulty understanding her at times. A word of caution, do not take her if math is very difficult for you to learn. She goes very fast and spends very little time simplifying details for struggling students. However, if you do manage to keep up, you will learn A LOT of math. Solid Choice.
This class is very hard if you are not into math. She is a very fast lecturer, but she does offer outside help. There are suggested homework problems and required my math lab tutorials/assignments. I dropped this class because I got lost in the sauce, missed a few days and when I came back, I did not have a clue about the material. PAY ATTENTION.
If you're not strong in math this professor is not for you. She teaches very fast and it's hard to keep up when she's doing her lectures. Only 4 tests and a final, and a few online math tutorials that we are graded on. HW is optional. If you fail the tests, good luck trying to save your grade. No online notes, and study guides aren't that helpful
Professor Kunkel is an amazing professor! She does have an accent; however, she is very well-spoken and delivers lecture materials with such clarity. Shes does offer help during her office hours noted on the syllabus to resolve any point of confusion. I recommend students to sit in the front of her lectures to receive the highest grade possible.
I learned a lot from Professor Kunkel. I only had her twice a week, so we strictly talked about math. This made class a little boring at times, but she knows what she is talking about and really wants her students to pass. All of the homework is suggested, and there were only 4 tests and a final. I am taking her again next semester; she's amazing.
Professor Kunkel clearly cares about her students and the material she teaches. Her lectures are informative but fast paced, so be sure to pay attention. She also assigns optional hw, but I would recommend doing it for practice. Overall, I would highly recommend taking this professor.
Professor Kunkel was an amazing math teacher. Only 4 tests, optional homework (which is provided, not with a textbook) and the final, but the final is worth 30% and is very difficult. I did feel like I learned a lot from her lectures- they are worth going to. Take good notes and ask her questions if you don't understand.
Calc tough class!! Recommend Prof Kunkel! Lectures are very clear & she makes sure students understand. Really good at explaining & clarifying everything when someone has a question. Very polite & sweet. There are only 4 tests and the final. Gives recommended hw in textbook but it is not for a grade but helps, goes over hw questions next class.
Coursework speed was too fast, hard to keep up.
Prof. Kunkel was the greatest math teacher I have ever had. She is passionate about math and is able to inspire passion in students who would regularly not care at all about math. She always goes over every homework question someone asks (homework is not mandatory but I highly recommend you do it) and explains exactly what will be on the test.
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Overall a great professor. Attendance isn't mandatory but I HIGHLY suggest you go. I am bad at math, always have been but I learned a lot from her lectures. Gives ungraded homework, but I advise you to do them. I feel I could do better if the class wasn't weighed on just tests and quizzes.
She is the best professor I have had at ODU. She made me have a real interest in mathematics, which I always hated. The tests are very similar to the optional homework so I recommend you do the homework and ask questions.
Dr. Kunkel is great. She really knows her stuff but will always go over things slowly if you need, and is accessible outside of class. She tells you exactly what to focus on for tests, but you need to go to class. Also she gave a very generous extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester so dont freak if you bomb a test, it's ok!
Amazing amazing teacher. I never understood math and always thought I hated it. I took her calc class because it was required by my major and now am thinking about taking more classes. She helped me every time I had a question, but didnt let me slack off either. Do your homework, even though its only suggested. Attend office hours.
I have taken math 205 before with a different professor, and I can honestly say professor Kunkel was way better! She is very caring. Do the homework and you'll be fine. Come to class, you won't know the material without going. Attendance is mandatory! I missed a few classes and it made the tests harder for me. GO TO CLASS. Overall, loved her.
She is possibly my favorite math professor I've had. She works a bit fast but she is a great teacher! It is a math class so it will be hard to pass if you skip class. She uses the textbook for homework problems (optional). Tests are the only grades (4 plus a final). In my class if your exam grade was higher than any test she replaced those tests
She is clear, concise, and super sweet! There are a good amount of homework assignments, (all on mathlab), but she is an easy grader. Quizzes are online and tests are short and the exact reviewed materials. Make sure to show work on tests as well because she will give you partial credit if you get the wrong answer but correct work.
The best math teacher I've EVER had. I cannot recommend her enough. She explains everything perfectly. I get A's on pretty much everything, not because she just hands them out, but because you will fully understand the material. She sets you up for success in her class, and for future math courses. Attend every class.
I suck at math. However this prof is amazing at it and an awesome Choice for any student. She teaches fast so it really helps to go over some material before class. Do her suggested HW and you are set for the test. 4 tests, HW, a few quizes and a final that can replace your lowest test. VERY fair grader and willing to help outside of class!!
Kunkel is quite possibly the best professor possible for mathmatics. If you attend lectures, do the practice HW, and ask her questions when confused you will be set. The 2 classes i've taken with her were in no way easy A's but taught superbly. I went from dreading math to litterally enjoying it b/c of her. If you chose her, you will not regret it!
I took her Math 162M class online and was extremely confused. The math was above my level for sure, but she did not explain things well during lectures and the class moved extremely fast.
1 midterm, 1 final, and homework assignments. 1 extra credit question on the final. She teaches very quickly, and she pre-records her lectures (so you can only ask questions through email or office hours). She might seem a little strict, but she's helpful during office hours. Never used the textbook.
I took her in an online class. She's great during office hours and via zoom. Other than that I did not like her. She gave me a 0 for a test that I wasn't able to attend, my entire grade weighed on my final exam. I do not recommend her, if you have someone else, choose them.
This class is structured in a really 'easy to follow' type of way. She posts short (5-15 minute) pre-recorded lecture videos with guided notes, & optional homework assignments. She introduces new topics slowly, then builds on them. She also reviews material before exams. She's very kind and helpful when I needed extra help. Definitely recommend her
took it online due to Covid- she is super sweet and is helpful but unfortunately if your mom does die the week before your exam you will have to take it. so make sure no one dies ;) it's only homework, weekly quizzes, and 3 tests and a final.
By far the best math professor I have ever had. She does an amazing job at explaining things right to the point. She only gives out 4 assignments, each only 10 questions. She also gives optional homework and fill in the blank notes. Test are usually only 10 questions. She is also very stylish.
Prof. Kunkel is one of the best math professors I've ever had, she is very thorough with the material, very kind, and very professional. You can tell she cares about her students, she modifies her teaching style to benefit us, going over commonly missed material and emphasizing areas of confusion. Her rich accent is fun to listen to. Lol
Professor Kunkel is amazing & teaches exactly that. She doesn't upload the notes to Blackboard, so if you miss a class & don't attend office hours, you'll struggle. Most work is on MML. There are 3 tests, & a final exam. If your final is better than your 2 lowest test scores, she'll replace the grade with the final.
She is a great professor overall. Always tells you what to expect on your tests. You make your own formula sheet. With that said, you do have to put work in on your end to get a good grade because it wont come easy.
Honestly, she was my favorite professor that I've had at ODU. She offers heavy extra credit on the first test and final exam. She also provides a study guide for each test and lets you create your own cheat sheet for each test. As long as you attend the class and take notes, you'll be fine. I ended with a 102 as my final grade
Professor Kunkel is super sweet. She really goes into depth with her students during lectures and shows multiple ways to do problems for those who struggle. Around 3 homework and a quiz per week. If you go to lecture and pay attention, the class is not all that hard.
Prof. Kunkel is a very good math professor. She gives you the outlines for notes before class and uses those and they're very thorough, as well as letting you make your own cheat sheet for every test. You have to go to class and take the notes because they're not posted anywhere else, basically just do the work and you'll be fine.
Prof Kunkel is amazing at explaining things during her lectures. If you feel like you're lost, use her office hours or ask her to explain. She really wants you to succeed. She was so kind and understanding. Just complete your assignments and come to the lectures.
If you have disability accommodations or test in the testing center, do not take with her. I have never had a professor who was so stubborn about allowing me access to my accommodations. No notes are posted on blackboard, so beware if you miss class even though attendance isn't graded.
The class was online. Kunkel is one of the worst professors I've ever had. She doesn't care if you understand the material or pass the course. If you want to pass her class, visit her office hour each time, and she will provide you with something precisely similar to the three examinations. Don't take her unless you want to fail or lower your GPA.
Before every lesson, she goes over what she will teach that week and when hw is due so you are aware. Emails are sent to remind you when you are getting close to the due date. Enthusiastic about what she teaches so you may have to ask her to slow down but she waits at the end of each page to make sure everyone has copied work/notes down.
I took Dr. Kunkel for precalc and I'm currently taking her again in calculus for life sciences. I've never been the best in math but she makes things clear in class and explains things well in my opinion. Her tests aren't too difficult as long as you study the problems in the notes you should do just fine.
Calculus is by no means an easy subject, but professor Kunkel will help you every step of the way. Attendance and textbook homework aren't required but they're highly suggested. She'll even replace your lowest test grade with the final if you do better. If you have questions don't hesitate to reach out! She genuinely cares about her students.
Look no further- among the best teachers I've ever had. I almost wish I had to take more math classes so I could learn from her again. She is a brilliant orator and explains things with incredible clarity. Highly professional, runs her classroom, and is clearly both passionate and devoted to her field. Provides more than ample resources to succeed.
Even though attendance is not mandatory--ATTEND THE LECTURES!!! Or you will NOT get the grade you want. Tests, homework, everything was straight forward, she made you aware of everything so no surprises. Really great teacher in my opinion.
She provides fill in the blank notes which are very helpful. There is no extra credit but the final exam can be worth half of your final grade if you do well. Overall, she's one of the best math professors.
Professor Kunkel is a great teacher who really puts in the effort when it comes to teaching. She's a great lecturer and her pre-made notes are super helpful for those who struggle with keeping up in class. The lectures are fast-paced and the homework is optional, but you should always do the HW.
Professor Kunkel is very understanding and grades are very nicely. The class is fast paced so just make sure you do the homework and ask questions and you will be fine.
She is the Best Math teacher! Her class is very well structured, and everything is laid out in the syllabus and calendar. She is a great teacher and always has patience for questions. She was always available during office hours to answer questions. The tests were only eight questions long and were exactly what she had gone over during the review.
She really knows her stuff and is genuinely excited about the course work. That doesn't mean it's not a difficult course though--YOU WILL HAVE TO PUT IN EFFORT. Like seriously so much. It is a lot of work--especially if you start missing classes. Do yourself a favor and don't skip. Also, she has a tutoring service linked to her canvas-use that too.
Prof. Kunkel is amazing. Shes so kind and obviously cares about her students understanding. Her lectures are not boring, and she makes things easier to understand. You get 4 quizzes, 3 tests, and a final but her grading is more than fair. She does her best to make it related to biology and relevant to what we are majoring in. 10/10 would recommend.
Never liked math but now I do!
Professor Kunkel is by far the best math teacher! She made Calculus extremely easy and enjoyable to learn. As long as you solidly understand your prerequisite material, this class will be a breeze. I recommend taking her class!
Prof. Kunkel is a great lecturer who provides thorough notes and allows cheat sheets. Attend class, do the work, and you'll do well. Unstuckstudy was also super helpful for studying.
Prof. Kunkle is the best math professor I've ever had in my entire educational career. I wasn't doing very good with precalc, but she was able to explain it in ways that I understood. Her methods are straight-to-the-point and test look just like the questions she practices with you. You can tell she is very experienced with math and enjoys her job
Best PreCalc Professor ever!! She make the course so easy to learn and get all the information I needed to succeed in the class. I highly recommend her for MATH 162M
Professor Kunkel has taught me through four of my math courses and essentially helped me finish my math career here at ODU! She is extremely thorough and efficient with her teaching technique. Provides help to students, has a dedicated and organized attitude, and creates an effective atmosphere for her students to learn. Don't skip class!
I hated her at first, but she turned out to be fair and really sweet. She gives helpful review guides for tests, and an amazing one for the final. If you do well on the final, it can replace two test grades; though she won't tell you that until the end. At first, she says it'll only replace one. Most homework is optional, but REALLY important.
Definitely a knowledgable professor but kinda moves fast and expects you to grasp things as soon as its mentioned. Besides that, great professor and would take again. Don't be afraid to ask questions or go to her office hours. She gives great feedback.
She is super efficient and professional. If you do the homework and listen to the lectures, it is a breeze. I would absolutely take this class again if I could.
Genuinely one of the best professors I've had, her lectures were fast but if you needed questions after class she would be more than happy to help out. Test were hard so don't skip any classes because one missed class and all of a sudden you're on a different module. Would take her again 100%.
