omg!! this lady is crazy.i mean she talks EXTREMLY fast and it is soo impossible to take any notes.and on top of that she does not allow tape recorders.because she "does not want her lectrues to be flooting around students" and what pissed me off the most, is that she doesnt teach from the text. she is a total B! DONT TAKE HER CLASS!!
Dude that first comment girl is crazy. Prof. McCarty is the BEST teacher at Ohlone. She is super nice and helpful, and totally gives you an outline of her lecture. And there is a girl who tapes the class in my class. She totally mixes it up. TAKE HER CLASS!
Not a very fun class if you are actually trying to learn something. She seams really into herself and I'm not sure if she thinks the students matter. Talks way toooooo fast. It's like she competing with something or someone. Perhaps trying to prove something. Anyway, stay away from this one!

she is a pretty nice teacher, with good intentions.. but her class is pretty intense.. A LOT of reading. her tests are short answer & essays, which blows. she offers extra credit and will clarify without making you feel stupid... but overall, its a hard class, with not much opportunity to get an A unless you are a history freak.
She is awesome! I took her on-line California history and it was great! I thought the on-line class would suck, but it was totally awesome. Cool reading and assignments, and really easy to get an A if you do the assignments.
Prof. McCarty is the best teacher at Ohlone. Her classes is not easy by any means and she can talk a little fast. But, she truly does care about all of her students. I was in her class LAST semester and I can STILL go to her for help on stuff or questions. She is wonderful. If you have ANY opportunity to take her class...DO IT!! You wont regret it.
She is awesome and CARES! I am in her California class. Tons of students. And she spends the time to learn our names. And she had some lady come and teach us how to take notes. And she gives an outline of her lecture. And she actually gets students talking about history in this big class of like 100+. It is totally cool and entertaining. Take her!
She is one hot tamale. She speaks in a way to keep you interested. and she is young and hip and ever brought a song by the dead kennedys to use in her lecture. she is fiesty and doesnt take any crap from the immature kids in the back. I hated history until I took her class. A++ for her
I have no idea why all these other people loved her class. I really think she wants her students to pass and do well but she grades hard. She assumes her class is easy b/c she use to teach it harder when she worked at Berkley. Its not easy. Everyone has a different experience w/ teachers, I didnt care for this one. I wouldnt take her again EVER!!!!
Online Class. Requires alot reading, plus weekly assignments(sometimes 2).Takes up alot of time considering 3unit class. Course is well setout and assignments are clear. You have to read to pass this class. She responds to mail quickly and is very helpful. Was a good online class.
one of the best teachers i have ever had..especially for history
Extremely well thought out curriculum. Very fair grading style. She drives home the main points and leaves out the superficial details. Instead of a textbook we used a book of first-hand documents from history to develop our own sense history. Other teachers should take notes...
Good Teacher. She doesn't put up with disrespectful students. Is a disciplinary, but doesn't care if you don't come to class. She hates it when people come to class late talking, causing a distraction (going up while she is talking and grabbing handouts),etc. etc.Her tests are hard unless you study. No Multiple choice! I suggest doing study groups.
Talks a little fast, but overall shes a good teacher. Also, she wants her class to call her Dr. not Miss.
She passes out handouts every class with the main points that she wants to drive home. On these handouts are every test item that you will need to know about so if you pay attention, specifically to the points that will be on the test, you should be fine. As someone stated, she does speak quite fast but she's more than willing to repeat herself.
honestly she wasnt easy, you really had to study for the tests, but i think she is a great teacher. if you put in work its not hard :]
Her online course is a lot of fun, and informative. She makes things fun and easy as long as you read the assignment and assigned reading! Pay attention.
Had major problem with structure of class. Large part of grade based on project about election which had NOTHING to do with CA history. tests very difficult, requires alot of memory. She talks fast and is rather abrasive and sharp.
What did learning about the initiative things NOT have to do with CA history? Seriously. The election assignment was awesome and a totally easy. Plus, we live here and the class is about California. Duh! Dr. M is awesome, and her class is a REAL class. I learned so much and her lectures are totally interesting. If you study, tests are cake.
Straightforward class. Projects/fieldtrips are straightforward but some will take commitment (community service). Exams are also fairly easy since she gives you the possible exam questions so you just memorize answers for all of them. Lectures may get dry but I found that the LAPSI meetings were most helpful for the exams.
Got by BA from UCSC and I thought this online class was very difficult. I've taken classes online before and this is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. A lot of reading from text books in place of lectures.Assumes that we all understand implied meanings throughout history in legislation. We had 3 days to do our midterm (5-7 pgs) rude person
Dr. Mcarty is one of those professors that teach there class and doesnt care wheather you attend or not. This class is for motivated individuals she teaches at a fast pace and assgins a lot of reading. Taking notes is a must and if you attend class everday and take notes the midterm and final are a breeze.attending the LAPSI is extremly helpfuul
Best class I've ever taken! She is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Totally entertaining! She really wants students to succeed and goes the extra mile if you need help. If you are serious about school you should take her class, and I didn't even like history before I took her.
I took this class online and there is A LOT of work. Tests come straight from the reading and there are 2 essays.Overall, great class. You will learn a lot about history. But don't take the class if you are a slacker.
Take Prof M's Rock and Roll in the 1950s class on-line. The assignments are fun; one of them is going to see live music. There is no textbook, instead you read interesting articles and short bios. So no cost on books, plus you'll learn a lot without even realizing it.
Very hard teacher
Damn! I have never took a history class and this is my last semester at Ohlone. And by far I think McCarty is my favorite professor. Although I am kinda political and she is. She's kinda strict but I think its kinda hot. Haha. The reason why I like her so much is because she is passionate at what she does. Very passionate and has lots of knowledge.
Nothing to say
LOL Gotta love it when the praise is comprehensible and the criticism is vague grunts! Prof M is an awesome teacher, but yes you have to actually study. It is college ya' know? She is really helpful! Best teacher I've had so far. She is straight up re expectations for exams and assignments. If you don't pass it is because you didn't do the work.
Great teacher. Do your homework and don't try to bluff it. She is very clear on what she expects so no surprises there.
you HAVE to do the work if you want to pass. I took the online class thinkin it would be easy but IT IS NOT. She seems very strict and she expects so much from a student. Also, reading all the material is needed to understand her class and so u wont struggle on essays. The book is SUPER boring.
Oh my goodness, this is one of the worst teacher I have even encountered in my college life. Hard work, low grade, and extremely slow grading. Please avoid this teacher if you want to pass the class easily. Otherwise, hard studier can take this class since this lower GE class will challenge you as taking upper major class.
Fabulous teacher and super helpful. She helped me learn to write a college paper. I may not remember much history after this summer (I hate history anyway) but I can make an argument. She always answers e-mail and returns our homework quickly, unlike my other on-line professor. She even called me to help me with my paper. Amazing.
I think she is a great teacher, if you are willing to work for your grade. She is really into her lectures, which helps you stay focused in her class. She is strict, but is relly nice if you ask her for help. She is a teacher that actually know what she is talking about, and is really organized. Just stay focused for her class and you can pass.
worst teacher I have ever had in my life. horrible!!!!
She is a very nice teacher!Go to class and take down notes you will do very well on the midterm and the final. She even reviews for you.If you miss class she offers to go over the lecture during office hours, or if you need help. Go to class do the work and you will pass, just don't be lazy. online weekly quizzes are very short and easy points!!!
I took her online. She is the most reasonable teacher ive had so far. I highly recommend her history class in case you wanted to get history req. outof the way. shes great
Good class, learned alot. I'm glad I took it.
This is the best professor I've ever had at Ohlone. Her lectures are more like the History Channel's telvision programs. It is a lot of work and it is very interesting. She obviously loves her subject and is passionate about what she does. Her online class is the most organized online class I've ever taken, very easy to understand and follow!
She is a great teacher. i took her history 105. although it was a little bit hard at first, she offered at least 20 extra credits as long as you went to LAPSI. she helps a lot and patientlly answers me every questions. i really learned a lot from her class. i just want to say she is good. take her classes.
I thoroughly enjoyed McCarty's women's history class. Her enthusiam is contagious and I look forward to learning more from her in the future.
She was great, I loved her!! Had her for California History. She is very enthusiastic, she loves her job. Only negative is you HAVE to read the book(collection of essays), its so boring. But if you read the book then you will get good online quiz grades. She is super cool and makes history fun! Take her class!!
Extremely good teacher. Very enthusiastic, and she always keeps it interesting. She is very well organized, and even though there is a lot of content you will know exactly what is on the test. There is a lot of reading, but if you do it is fairly easy to accumulate lots of extra credit.
If your looking for an easy A for rock n roll don't even bother taking her. I got an A and i worked for it, you have the spend the time and she makes the class hard for a reason. So just do your work and do the quizzes. Major assignments are worth**** load of points so don't ignore them and also no extra credit so if you need some points to boost
def not SUPER EASY, but manageable. quizzes and discussion boards are easy BUT u need to put effort on the 3 major assignments. it is not impossible but you have to work hard. dont percieve this as a bs class cuz shes a tough grader. if ur not a good writer, u will not do well. its an easy A only if u put in effort. she is helpful too :)
Dr. McCarty is Extremely Smart and defiantly knows what she is talking about. She tells you exactly what to do and what to know for tests. While you will have to read in her class its doable if you spread it out through your week. Take notes and study and you should get a good grade. Best instructor you'll Have hands down :]
i felt really stressed while taking this class cuz she grades so hard! not an easy A. you have to spend time on your 3 essays. i got an A in the class but thats because i worked hella hard. if you ABSOLUTELY need this class and need to get an A, you def can but you need to put in a lot of effort. idk if shes nice since its online, but shes tough.
Definitely a tough grader. Changes things and experiments with new ways to do things, at least with online. That was tough on my grade. We tried out a new discussion board site, and only a handful of students were successful with it. She appologized for the confusion, but still gave zeros to those who were't able to figure it out.
She's pretty fair & definitely knows what she's talking about. However, I don't agree with the way teaches her online class. The amount of work she expects out of you is beyond what a normal 3 unit class takes. If you don't plan on doing something for her class at least 2 hours a day 4 or 5 times a week, don't bother taking the class. Lots of work!
Very easy online class. She assigns 3 essays that are due throughout the semester but the guidelines for each are assigned at the beginning of the class; no excuse to do poorly. Helpful and responds quickly to students questions. Tries new thing to improve the class for students. I would highly recommend her.
The most organized on-line course ever. It is sort of like an in person class cause you watch lectures she made and have discussions on a posting board. Just a midterm and final, and you have like a week to do them. Also, she is hella' nice. Always responds to e-mails fast.
Quite possibly one of the best teachers to have an online class! Not an easy class per se, but extremely fair and even if history isn't your thing you will INEVITABLY learn something from this class. Probably one of the few online classes where you'll forget that you're actually not in a class between lectures and the "field trip" videos she has.
Extremely intelligent! No question will go unanswered, and if she cannot answer it she will get back to you the following class. She has a major passion for history and all her subjects she teaches. You WILL enjoy this class. It is not easy, however it is completely fair and can be finished with a good grade.
Professor McCarty is one of the best teachers ive had at this school, she is strict about reading the textbook but all the reading is worth it when the tests come. Her class is awesome!! She's not bad to look at either
The Best teacher on Campus...take one of her classes is a must unless you want an easy life in college, which it isn't.
She's a great professor; she really cares for her student. As long as you attend class and try, there's absolutely no reason for you to fail. She gives you the test and quiz questions in advance...so it would really be difficult to fail her class. she's a wonderful professor, she really cares about each individual.
Took her for hist. rock 50's and bad girls. great, nice, helpful teacher for both. interesting. fair. sympathetic toward blackboard problems. She talks really fast in class. She is really amazingly helpful and genuine. real work though- long papers. would def. take her again.
So I had Prof McCarty for History of CA and at first she really does come off as scary, unfair, and uncaring. BUT GET TO KNOW HER. Dude... she is one of the nicest and most easy to talk to people I've met. She truly wants you to succeed and while her syllabus and Blackboard page may come off as intense and unmanageable, just push through :)
For Women's History there's no textbook, at least when I took it. The main focus of the class is to learn how to write a quality college research paper. And you basically work on that through out the semester. She does do lectures during the class, but that information (minus the key terms) is pretty much irrelevant for your final grade.
Not a hard class if you show up to class, do the readings, and turn in assignments. Its very clear and straight forward. She doesn't use a text book; provides readings online. I plan on taking another class with her to satisfy my art requirements. She is interesting and enthusiastic! By far the best history professor I've ever had! Love her!
HELLA HARD CLASS if you're not used to her teaching style. No book, no powerpoints, just a lecture and you have to write whatever you can and hope it's the right thing. HW is primary/secondary source readings that make no sense and the lecture the next day has nothing to do with the HW. Good teacher if you like the teaching style but I need a book.
The online hist 105 is ridiculous. The amount of work for a 3 unit class is crazy. You read secondary and primary sources, and are told to create questions for classmates. And the teacher will track every single word you write down to make sure you dont plagiarize anything you do in this class. She grades hard
On the first day of class, I thought she came off as mean and very strict. Throughout the semester, she is still strict, but she's actually really helpful. You learn quite a bit in the lectures. There are quizzes every class, but they are based on the daily readings and not at all hard. Overall, it was a joy to take her class.
She is a horrible teacher wont ever recommend her class. She speaks to fast, and there's no textbook to read from.
I was bored out of my mind doing work for her online class. Having to watch boring movies, listen to her boring hour long video lectures made me want to poke my eyes out. You cannot miss a thing because the exam covers every single thing in the large amount of readings you do every week.
Dr. McCarty is an awesome professor! She is prompt, helpful, and very nice.Took her online class, pretty much the only assignments we had to do were weekly discussion boards from readings/lectures,a midterm, and final. However don't expect an easy A-this is not B.S-er you must do the readings/lectures/movies to have any understanding of the coursework.
She may talk fast, but she is willing to help you if you go to her office hours. She has a lot of reading quizzes that can bring you down, but do the study guides, guided reading questions, and go to her office hours! ALSO participate in lecture, she notices who does and doesn't.
Do not be fooled by her syllabus and her long lecture about not cheating on the first day of class. She is actually the kindest, most dedicated, and passionate teacher I've ever had. Yes she doesn't tolerate cheating, and yes you have to study. But her exams are straight forward, her lectures are interesting, and there is no textbook to buy.
Best on-line class I've taken. So organized. She actually answers e-mails quickly and skypes. It is kind of like a normal class b/c there are lectures to watch. Just a weekly discussion board and essays for the midterm and final. If you do the work it is an easy A, but if you don't do the work I think it would be really hard to do well.
Do not take this teacher. Asks for proper grammar on posts and other homework, while many of her instructions come with many grammar errors and spelling errors herself. Also is very strict at grading
Class isn't easy but isn't hard if you just put in the effort. Tests are definitely on the harder side, and have short essay portions, but she does reviews and gives study guides. There is one project that's worth a lot, but it's not hard. Would have gotten a B had I not forgotten to submit my project paper online, as not doing so is an auto 0%.
Overall fairly medium difficulty as far as history classes go, everything was fair. Heather is a very nice person and did her best to make the lectures interesting and informative. My only issue is the class is listed as US History... not the history of women and minority groups in the US. That aside, I would still recommend her class.
She is very educated in History, but the down side is that I believe that she thinks that this class is everyone's major so she grades hard. Its more of a power trip if you ask me. Im an A/B+ student and this class is tough...School is not easy, but she makes it miserable for me. Needs to be a 4 unit class .
This class is almost IMPOSSIBLE to receive an A in. Just letting you all know...
Her midterm will be a challenge. You have to memorize a ridiculous amount of information that is completely a waste of brain space. That is what books are for, so we don't have to memorize history. Plus this is history it wont change our future BECAUSE ITS HISTOR!!! Anyways...Hard class, and I am an A/B+ student... TAKE NOTES, and READ. TRUST ME!
Beloved Professor McCarty! She's extremely passionate about her history material, and it shows in her lectures, which makes them engaging and interesting. Maintain an A during the semester, and you'll be exempt from the final :) Attend all lectures and take notes, and the midterm is the easiest there's ever been. So recommended, she is the best!!!
Phenomenal teacher! I greatly appreciate the alternate views on CA history, society, and culture that this class offered. The exams weren't easy, but if you are at all susceptible to being influenced by McCarty's lively spirit you should have no trouble finding the material fascinating and studying an enjoyable experience, especially for CA natives
Great super easy class. No midterms or final, just a field trip to see a concert, a short paper, and then a final project on a artist u pick. Cake short weekly quizzes and discussion boards. Teacher responds quickly to emails. I learned a lot and wasn't into the topic beforehand, but am now. Very organized class compared to other online classes.
I am also taking her H141 on-line. They are both good, but very differnt organization. This course has recorded lectures and H141 has npr interviews and music activities to listen to. There is a midterm and final that u get questions for at start of semester so they're easy. No quizzes, but weekly discussion boards. Responds to emails quickly.
This was my first online class, and it was an amazing experience. The professor is incredibly organized and presents the material in a fun, interesting way. I didn't expect to enjoy this class as much as I did. If you do take this class though—start your midterm/final early!!!
stay away. worst teacher ever. the online class is so hard. 90% of class dropped it after midterm. she will grade you so hard on midterm and exams even even if you try so hard you will still get F. and the quizzes are 25 question and they are only worth 10 points. dont take her.
Best online class I have ever taken! I had Bardell and McCarty this summer, and the difference was night and day. McCarty cares about her students, is available to help you, responds to email daily, and has a well organized class. The work was easy: open book quizzes, cool discussion assignments, and two short essays. Easy class if you do the work
GREAT! She is one of the best online teachers I have ever had. She gets back to you right away when you email her. Her lessons are very detailed and well thought out. She really cares about her students. As long as you do the work and do it right you should be fine.
like everyone else here said, dr. m is organized and always gets back to you. everything is all laid out like. even though it is online you can tell she cares. she sends weekly reminders which i totally need.
Taking her class for 5 weeks now. There are tons of reading. Each week, students need to finish a chapter by Wednesday to finish the chapter quiz and discussion post which both due midnight. Workload assigned is unbalanced for a online course. Essay require every details in each chapters. Very strict grading scale. Only take her if you are ready.
Shes AMAZING Professor I have ever taken online course. She makes you learn so much and I love her lectures. Theyre great and interesting. Its a bit challenging but Professor McCarty would do anything to help you if you have struggles. She immediately replies back, & she does care for her students. I would definitely take her again.
I attended class literally the first day, the day of the midterm, the two days that I had projects due, and the final (in two weeks). I'm on track to pass with a B. Get your field trip & current events projects out of the way early on, and definitely do outlines for the midterm and final. There's no textbook.
Dr. McCarty is my favorite professor I've had at Ohlone so far. Her lectures are interesting and her enthusiasm for the subject makes you want to learn more. She can be a tough grader, but she is always crystal clear about her expectations and is always available if you need help or screwed up. The most organized and clear professor I've ever had.
History with Professor McCarty was awesome. She might come across as a very mean professor the first day of class, but as youll see later on, shes super chill, super nice and knows that history should not be a stressful but fun subject for students. The only way youll get a bad grade is if you just dont bother doing anything at all. Good looking to
Great Professor, pretty easy class. One midterm and one final essay. Highly recommend .
4 components of your grade: Midterm, Final, Current Events Presentation, and Field Trip Assignment. For your midterm & final - she literally gives you the essay question & vocab words 2 weeks before the final. It's your fault if you get anything less than a B in this class. Get your current events & field trip assignment done early.
Class was fun and i learned so much! If you participate in class it makes things 1000 times better! She brings so much energy to class and really wants to teach! You have 4 major things to do in the class (current event, field trip paper, midterm, final). She helps you study for both tests!
She's very caring and will answer your questions to the best of her ability. Talks REALLY fast, but don't be afraid to tell her to slow down. She won't mind. Lots of reading assignments, probably around two or three per week. Be prepared to write a lot each class time because she's a lecturer and doesn't put much up on the slides.
Completely amazing! Loves history and it comes out every day in class. Goes beyond what is necessary to make sure students can do well on tests. Clearly marks all concepts and terms that will be included on exams. Big bonus: if you have perfect attendance and have an A going into the final, you are exempt from taking the actual final. Good reviews
I love her!!! One of my absolute favorite classes I've ever taken, and I'm not even a history major. Key tip: show her your midterm before its due so she can look it over. Super interesting class. She's awesome.
If you are want to be a historian, take her class; if not, GO AWAY! "Essay" discussion(although discussion, but it's kind of writing essay), 25 quiz questions, and Bunch of reading materials every week. You really need to write the mid paper and final very well because each worth 100 points!!
This was my 6th online class and the most organized one I have taken. You write two papers and you have the prompts all semester long. Then you have the standard textbook quizes and discussions. You watch little history documentaries and I like that. She replies quickly to emails and sends out reminders (that I need). Online isn't for everyone...
I was dreading my fine arts requirement, but I wound up loving this class. There is no textbook, which is nice on the pocket book. She changed the way I listen to music for the rest of my life. One of my favorite classes of all time.
Tips to passing her class: 1. sit in front and be respectful 2. answer questions and participate 3. Pay attention to the movies 4. make your own notes cause her lectures suck 5. memorize the final/midterm terms 6. attend essay discussion Honestly her class is very easy pass if your not lazy, be nice, and respectful it helps if she remembers you .
I really enjoyed having Professor McCarty. She was always happy and in a good mood. Instead of a textbook, every reading assigned was available on Canvas. Her lectures were fine; for me, I like detailed lectures, but with McCarty's, they were outline-based and condensed. I would definitely recommend taking her for any History class.
I loved McCarty! She doesn't have boring lectures & is really interesting! No textbook, but she does assign readings (you don't have to read them). Lecture were outline-based. Have to write good notes & listen. Assignments: current event, a field trip paper, midterm, & final. Don't have to take final if A after midterm & perfect attendance.
sucks, do not take her class. She is really arrogant because she has a Dr degree, every time she tells us like we must call her doctor otherwise she will be angry. she speaks really fast, 99% people could not fully grab her words.. I saw here are many students gave her 5.0, maybe they major history or something like that..
I would take her class again. She is really nice and her class is interesting. Would recomend!
Late start sucks but Mccarty gets that it is hard to do the whole thing quickly. She replies to emails same day which helps. I wont take late start again but I will take her again. Very organized online.
She is the most passionate professor that I have ever taken. Trust me, you will get A if you listen to her lecture, do what she tells you to do. Don't need to take final if you did well throughout the semester. Making sure to do a field trip assignment at the very beginning of semester along with a presentation on political news. Take here class.
The worst online class you can possibly take. Might as well stand outside and wait for jesus to help you. Hardest grader you can possibly have and will absolutely demolish you on your midterms even though you have the prompt early. Only take this class if you feel like tanking your GPA on purpose and not want to transfer out and be successful.
Weekly quizzes and discussions determines your grade, literally. They have low points and the only points youll get. Shes an extremely picky, hard grader. Youre off by one thing, youre marked a grade down in your discussion. Midterm and Final papers dont even matter if you get an A if you quiz and discussions are not perfect. Get away if u can
Do not take her online class, you are bound to fail if you don't read every single day. Out of the two years of mixed general ed and major science classes, she's the hardest grader and assigns the most work. Take someone else, not worth the money or time
She is a hard grader and she is not understanding at all. I do not recommend this class because it is not that east either.
Most organized online class I have taken. She responds quickly to emails and is super helpful. Use her online office hour to get help on your papers.
Good class. Weekly discussions, short quizzes (not worth many points), and 3 papers. One paper is a field trip to see live music. No textbook. She grades work and responds to emails quickly. She also sends out a weekly reminders. I met with her once during office hours and she was helpful and smart.
Dr. McCarty is an amazing professor! There are weekly discussion boards and a quiz every week but they are extremely easy if you read the textbook and the primary sources. She gives amazing feedback and provides the midterm and final prompts ahead of time. Amazing and organized course and professor! 10/10 would recommend for online classes.
1 filed trip assignment, 1 current event, 1 midterm, & 1 final. Straightforward and interesting class. Second half of the class is all about activism like the panthers, chicanx movement, gay rights, and stuff. She is super nice. Go to the reviews. She let students that did the optional review pick their essay question.
easy class. attend the reviews.
This teacher grades your english tougher than history classes. If you get an A in english on a paper, she will give you a B in her class. And not to mention, she's a complete femenist/SJW who will make sure you abide by her principals and bring you down in front of the class if you object her viewpoints. And yes, she will make you call her doctor.
She puts a limited amount of things into grading. There's a field trip assignment, a presentation, the mid term and final which can impact your grade if you don't do well. She is nice but she is very clear that she won't give you points or won't let you turn an assignment in if it is late, which sucks even if is only a 10 point assignment.
I took her class which is HIS-105 in FALL 2018. She is the best teacher at Ohlone College. Clear in grading. She makes her class interesting. Super Easy A. A lot of extra credits. However, there were many assignments and quizzes in this class; as long as you do all the assignments, essays, and quizzes, then you would be fine (at least B).
I have a lot of respect for Dr. McCarty. She put together the best online courses I have taken. I have had somewhere they are EXTREMELY easy and then some that use obscure questions for quizzes. She makes her course fun, but also not easy where you do not have to read or do the work. Overall a great course and would take her again anytime.
The class was hard at first, but it's getting easier when you are used to it. She required a lot of readings tho, but it helped a lot in doing discussion and writing essays. She also gave really thoughtful feedbacks which improved me a lot. Would recommend taking her!!
A+ student but failing in this class with unrealistic expectations. This class is treated like advanced level.
The class has a total of 3 essays: a field trip, analysis paper, and final; however, the writing and special assignments make it seem like 10 papers. The assignments are very specific and have to be answered a certain way. Make sure to get an A in English 101a before taking this class. You will fail for improper grammar/English. Hard class, wow!
Hardest class I've done at Ohlone college.
"This teacher grades your English tougher than English classes."
Workload each week is about 24 hours minimum, including about 8 pages of reading per module with about 30-70 pages more hidden each week for discussion board. Responses, need three long paragraphs! Watching about 7 videos a week and analyzing about 4 songs, all while having to go on a rock field trip, two advanced level essays, a video assignment.
At first this class was pretty hard. McCarty IS a tough grader, but I started to do better later on in the class. I think as long as u answer the questions she provides for assignments & exams thoroughly u will be just fine. Do the homework even though most of it is optional. Knowing the material is crucial to getting good grades on essays.
Professor is very lenient and creates a interesting learning experience. Exams are in class essays but should be easy if you go to lectures. Overall, a very good professor who knows how to teach.
Hard!
I took this class because there is no textbook and wound up liking it. You do have to go to a rock concernt, so not totally free class. But I liked seeing the music and the two other papers were pretty easy. There are weekly discussion boards too. Overall easy A.
One of the better organized online classes I've taken (and I've taken a lot of them). Very clear directions. There isn't a book so you have to read the things in the class, which was less conveint for me because I hate reading on my phone so had to wait until I was at a computer. But easy on the wallet and easy A.
Professor McCarty is kind and generous with her time. This was my first time back in college and I bombed the midterm paper. Professor McCarty made me come to her office hours and went through the paper with me. Now I know how to write a paper and it helped with all my classes.
McCarty is great. She actually answer emails and grades work quickly (none of my other online teaches can manage to do that). No book. Weekly discussions and very short quizzes. 3 big assignments. See live music and answer some questions about it, paper about lyrics, and research about a musician and song. Very easy class if you do the work.
This class needs to be a 5 unit class w/ the workload involved.
Amazing professor. She really cares and is understanding. I felt seen for the first time.
loved this class. she is passion forward.
I had a medical thing happen and she was chill about timeline for making up the work and checked in on me. she really cares. so much nicer than my other teachers were.
She is kind. So kind.
she's such a great professor! she really knows how to teach and is mostly verbal with lectures. if you're thinking of skipping class a lot .. don't take her bc slides have barely any details. midterms + final is easy if you take REALLY good notes. no one reads the textbook bc u never get tested on the book just in class notes. love u ms. mccarty!
Didn't think I would enjoy this class but it was good. It have made me think differently about music. Easy A; Weekly discussion post things and like 5 question quizzes. Three papers and no final or midterm. No textbook.
Horrible grader!! Her tests made no sense and were very hard. I would not recommend this professor at all. 1 midterm and 1 final exam, but very long and hard.
I took Dr. McCarty for Women's Studies & even though it was an online class her personality shined through the screen! She really cares about her students! For this class the only assignment we had were weekly discussions, however, the readings and videos were on the finals and midterm! She provides a study guide so fill it out as you go along!
Thankful she is my teacher during this COVID crisis. She has handled this better than my other teachers. Very understand. Kind teacher.
3 quizzes a week, unnecessarily hard, have to use context clues and she says they are easy "A's" PSYCHE. The midterm and final are crazy hard, and directions are not clear. Very long writing assignments, and a field trip paper. If you want to complete a GE, do not take her. She doesn't even straight up answer your email questions, worst choice.
Horrible. She thinks she's being clear at all times with directions, but she isn't at all. 3 quizzes a week, which are very hard, their are no direct answers, you must use context clues. Must read 14-18 page chapters before doing the quizzes to understand anything. Grades horribly. Responds with attitude when you email her a question.
This semester was awful and this class was the only good thing in it. This was my only class that worked when it moved online. i wound up liking it more online. good class in person great class online.
I almost didn't take this class. i heard she was a hard grader. not my experience. very nice and understanding teacher. easy A.
100%honestly can say she is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. 360characters is not enough to explain how bad of an educator she is. I wish I could write a paper on how poorly I feel about her teaching style and her classes. Grades tougher on english side of papers then what she actually teaches. Pathetic and comical she's still employed
Amazing teacher that goes above and beyond to help her students. I had a hard time with the move to online. She tracked me down, helped me get a computer from the college, and got me back into the class work so I was able to pass. None of my other teachers reached out to me at all. I was able to pass her class an my others thanks to her.
Lectures in class were inspiring. what an amazing story teller. Move on line was fast and seamless, but I liked in person better. I couldn't afford a book and so she loaned me a copy for the semester. Gave everyone extra points on midterm and final and dropped lowest scores for us all. Beyond understanding and fair.
goat. really cares. eye opening material. transformative.
She is by far one of the most caring teachers Ive had. Even though it was an online class, she makes sure you understand the materials and give pretty good feedback. Some topics were a bit overwhelming & triggering and she did the best she could to help you with the assignment. Id say take her Womens studies class if u need to! Very informative
She does not regard for student life at all. I had many questions about how I could cite my sources and instead of helping she gave me 0's and threatened to report me to the dean. She is not a good teacher, not respectful towards students.
Took her cybersession. semester's worth of course in 20 days was nuts, but good way to get it out of the way and she was a real peach. Works out to 2+ chapters per day reading quizzs, discussions 3Xs per wk, and midterm and final essays. She responded quickly to my emails, had daily office hours, and met with me a few times to help with my essays.
By far the worst prof at ohlone , shes not understanding what so ever. Claims the class is easy when the work load is heavy and isnt understanding of student life outside of college. Is extremely strict on papers. Expect to fail all her quizzes and tests with how she grades
Definitely one of the best professors I've ever had! She gives appreciating feedback on every assignment and keeps things easy and enjoyable. HIST141 with McCarty is one of the best courses you can sign up for. I've learnt so much and so much cool music from this class. The fun I've had in this class has made is very much worth it.
Not understanding at all! Not consistent!! I made a mistake on an assignment and emailed her about it because I was confused instead of helping me she give me a zero. Save yourself the tears and don't take her!
kind professor. very organized and gets back to emails/questions very quickly. lots of feedback and reminders. but cybersession is 3 weeks of nonstop work. definintely doable but not fun. will take another course from her in a normal term where the pace is not so unyielding.
Professor McCarty is a great, caring, & responsive professor. I took a cybersession. Expect lots of assignments with specific due dates. You need to really be on top of the assignments. Otherwise, you will get behind and it will affect your grade tremendously. Overall, a great professor if you are willing to work hard & do lots of assignments.
Took async Hist 105 last semester with her, she has weekly office hours and a class tutor, but you will mostly have to do the work on your own, for the essays, you are only allowed to use what she gives you, some weeks you will have to watch multiple documentaries, but as long as you keep up with everything and work hard, you should pass this class
Professor McCarty is so kind. She emails to check in on you. If you let her know you're personal life has issues, she works with you. She helped get into a counselor at Ohlone. She just goes above and beyond. She probably saved my life. She is my blessing.
LOTS OF WORK. I took cybersession and did a lot of the quizzes and discussion before the class started so I had somewhat of an easy time. However, it can be a lot. She is super caring and if you do the work youre guaranteed an A.
She isn't understanding of anyone at all. The only sources that you can use in her essays are the ones she provides, and they are extremely bad. Half of her sources can't even be used and when you do find one that somewhat fits your subject she doesn't even count it as a source. Also, she thinks rounding grades is "offensive" to ask about.
Professor McCarty really cares. This was my second time taking the class and she went out of her way to help me. Even thouhg online she was there for me. You can tell how much she cares for all of us and wants us to make it.
Dr. Heather has a very big heart. She helped me learn to write a paper and she helped me learn about California. She is very patient and a blessing to all.
I took this class as a winter cybersession so it went by very quickly. You have to log in every day as there is homework due every day at 11:59 pm. She gives great feedback which I really appreciated. The midterms were about a topic you've read during the homework. It was fairly easy, and she's a great professor!
The midterm and final were relatively easy, in that the instructions were very clearcut and if you paid attention you shouldn't have a problem with it. overall the class is structured very efficiently, and the course is easy to navigate. Professor McCarthy also gives excellent feedback, particularly on the midterm and final. .
One of the best professors. You need to attend the lectures to pass. Midterm is based on her lectures. She's fun and engaging, makes history interesting. Easy A if you try. Midterm is an in class essay but you can literally make a draft and let her check it the week before in office hours. Gives great feedback. Lets you skip final if you have an A.
Assignment format may seem annoying at first (read and annotate), but you can definitely skim through and annotate at the right parts. I personally went in between full skimming and reading, the history was interesting. The bigger writing assignments are just based off the readings, so if you get the general gist of them, you'll be good.
Easy to follow class structure. Readings and music were interesting. Gave a lot of feedback. Answered emails. Easy A. what more do you want from an online class
This was easily the worst class I've ever taken. The teacher piled on excessive homework, treated students disrespectfully, and made the environment feel hostile instead of educational. I felt unfairly judged and targeted, which made the entire experience miserable. I would not recommend this class to anyone
