Not a great professor, she seemed nervous most of the time and didn't really grab my attention. However, she did have some interesting lectures and covered most of the material required.
Don't think she deserves such a low rating. She taught some exceptionally boring subject matter in such a way as to make it slightly interesting, and provided excellent resources to learn how to write an APA research paper (which seemed to be the point of the course).
awful prof
I thought she was alright. I believe she said she is just starting her teaching career which would be a stressful time. I thought she handled the course well and she is actually really nice. I wouldn't mind having her again.
Her exams are nothing like any of the questions she does in class. She makes everything more difficult than it has to be. Very bad at getting grades back on time. You may think you did well on your exam, but you most likely did very bad. The only things that save you in this class are the assignments. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH A DIFFERENT PROF!
She teaches a lot of unnecessary material. Makes things more hard than they should be. Exams are nothing like any practice questions in the text book or that she gives. Only thing that boosts your marks are the assignments. Unless you want to be having panic attacks every time you study for an exam, take another professor.
Overall, I think that people should avoid this teacher at all costs because she is unclear and the exams are unfair. The exams were more difficult then need be. The main reason why I would not recommend her to my friends is because she does not explain the material well, then incorporates difficult questions into her exams... not experienced at all
I would not recommend this professor to anyone because her teaching is very difficult to understand and the midterms are very very very hard. I would suggest taking an experienced professor for PSY classes because the material is difficult and you need to be taught it efficiently.
Great Prof. Everything from the text book so no surprises on the exam. Fairly interesting classes, good at engaging. Fairly easy grader, if you study you will do well.
She was not too bad at teaching stats, it was more interactive but the tests were hard and gave no time at all. Did not really like her. She also made us buy a super expensive textbook
Midterms and exams are pretty tough, but not completely unfair. Keep in mind that the exam is the same for all PSY1101 classes so it has a lot of things that you may have not focused on very much in class (it's all based on the textbook). Very personable and easy to talk to. Very eager to help you and provide tips if you are having a hard time.
Lectures are engaging and you'll enjoy them. Best one was the one about sex because its super awkward. However, her midterms are really tricky you definitely have to know your stuff. If you have the chance take it with haddad you'll be more prepared for the final which is written by the director of psych.
Willing to answer questions in lecture. Great lecture slides. Exams are mostly MC, with some short answer. Know the studies to do well on exams. Textbook great source of additional info.
very clear cut about what is required, great at communicating her knowledge and pleasant to talk to
Very nice woman, knows a lot about psychological studies and loves to ask MCQ and short answers about them on her exams. Her presentations are a bit dry, but a lot of the info she gives isn't directly in textbook. Exam questions are deceptively precise; they incorporate material from her slides, videos and the reading assignments. Memorize well!
The only reason I have any idea what she's talking about is because I taught myself Quant I from the textbook. Makes things WAY harder than they should be and doesn't explain well in class. SPSS is useless and she tests that too. I wish I had time to switch out with a different professor.
SHOULD NOT be teaching stats, explains way too fast, long tricky confusing questions makes course way harder,i usually love stats, not anymore. Not helpful AT ALL office hours by appointment IF YOU HAVE A GOOD REASON,quiz every friday night, slides incomplete, txtbook very expensive only way to study for course,if u ddnt do well stats1 u're in trouble
NOT AS BAD AS EVERYONE SAYS. Always willing to help. She has all the info you need in her slides and going to class will definitely benefit you. she doesn't try and trick you with her questions on the exams. MC questions and a few short answer which are all calculations. very doable for anyone who did reasonably well in stats 1. :)
Excellent stats prof. Very clear in her lectures and highly approachable. Textbook she uses is very straightforward, and her slides are very useful. Midterms/assignments are appropriately challenging - very fair if you did the work. Allows cheat sheets so she tests your understanding, not memorization of formulas.
Her condescending attitude and shrill voice made me want to pull my hair out. Avoid if possible
She definitely knows what she is talking about, and she is very helpful with answering questions if you ask. But sometimes she only knows how to explain things in one certain way, and if a student proposes something different, she just goes back to what she originally said. Overall, she is a good prof and I am enjoying stats. Don't fall behind.
Good person, but not the best to teach stats. Really fast and odd office hours, know she's a parent but only available after 5 on one day? Midterms are difficult, popquiz standards are unfair, random SPSS stuff that we don't use so we'll forget & useless tut classes. Willing to see you outside of class though.
She is very interesting and explains statistics in a way that you can understand. She makes time to answer questions outside of office hours. Study HARD for her midterms/exams, but she modifies the marks after if she thinks questions were irrelevant. Keep up to date with the readings for her pop quizzes
Average professor across the board, as well as being a "mixed bag." The material isn't too difficult. However, her midterms are somewhat difficult and the time limit sucks. The pop quizzes are even worse; firstly because they are spontaneous, secondly they are hard, thirdly the time limit sucks. Not the worst professor, but take at your own risk.
This course was alright. Really easy at first, but the difficulty increases sharply after the first midterm. Pop quiz standards are somewhat unreasonable; without diligent studying you're unlikely to get the desired grade on them. The prof is decent at lecturing, the exams aren't TOO difficult, and is relatively helpful. Overall, pretty average.
She seems like a really nice person and cares about her students. She is available to meet outside of class. Second midterm was unfair but she did realize this and made adjustments accordingly. Tough class, but she is a decent prof.
I would not recommend this class for a first time stats learner. She knows her stuff but she's bad at explaining. She rushes through difficult concepts and doesn't leave enough time for the students brain to soak it in. Also her pop quizzes are bizarre. If you're 5 mins late or have to work you'll get a score of 0. Choose a different prof!
Great lectures. All the examples she says out loud in lectures are on the exam. One of the better teachers. Final was hard and cumulative while other psy2114 were only on 3 lectures after midterm. She expects you to know your stuff really well.
Good professor. Covers material in great detail, makes class interactive, and generally friendly. Tests are hard and she puts too any questions on them. Always available to help students in office hours.
avoid her
Loved her. Had her for 2106/2116 and thought she was great. Going to class is a good idea because she gives pop quizzes that are quite easy if you understand what she says in class. Always willing to answer questions in class and in office hours. I thought the class was a breeze but many thought her second midterm and final were difficult
After the first midterm I hated her simply because I thought the exam was going to be like the other psy courses I had taken. So for midterm 2 I studied so hard because midterm 1 was lecture based and I passed. The final was hard but still lecture based, you need to know your stuff! She was an amazing professor, great lectures.
Definitely expects students to work hard and assigns lots of homework. However shes extremely caring, learns students names, answers emails quickly, and is very helpful outside of class. Dont be intimidated by her, shes very kind and passionate about teaching. Lab assignments almost every week, a very fair midterm plus a final project.
Cares about her students so much. Will give extensions on any assignments if you ask. Gives you a lot of opportunity to get feedback on each step of the process of writing a research proposal. Test material is pretty simple and there's a lot of overlap between this course and stats. Also, bought us pizza at the end of our term-long project!
Dr. Poole is a great prof! Very available to her students for help, to answer questions and gives good feedback Explains concepts thoroughly One research proposal that you basically work on through the whole course which she will help you with 2 midterms and a final - MC & SA free textbook Very sweet - gave us pizza and career advice at the end
She is a really great and nice person who cares about her student. She does make her tests pretty difficult but If you put a lot of time into studying you should do well. if you're someone who doesn't grasp the concept of math well, she may not be the best for you. She'll put in any time she can to help so take advantage of that!!
She's a great person but not a great teacher. She doesn't really explain things too well. Her slides don't help you or explain anything when you want to study so the textbook is a good idea to have. You'll probably want to stop going to her class in the middle of the semester.
Avoid this professor. She is overly sensitive and does not do well when questioned. I had a query re: an answer I provided on a test and she became quite aggressive. She teaches behind a veil of "niceness." The course content itself is a breeze.

One of the worst statistics profs I have had. She doesn't explain anything clearly, and her classes do not reflect what she puts onto quizzes. Avoid taking her class!
Heather is a nice and caring person, but not a great professor. Her lectures are somewhat engaging but it's really easy to get bored during class because of how minimal the powerpoints are. Go to class as she bases a few of her questions on the videos she plays in class. If you can take this class with a different prof then I suggest you do that.
Weekly quizzes in DGD were very annoying but an easy 15%. Assignments were easy and worth 2x10%. Midterms and final were TOUGH. Much deeper understanding required than for in class questions or weekly quizzes. She's a good prof and seriously knows her stuff but if you really need a good grade in stats I would recommend finding a different teacher.
Truly a very nice, caring prof; really wants her students to succeed and willing to help to those who are struggling. I didn't do well in the class, but stats 2 is just a crappy class to have to teach. Also had her for research methods and did very well. Would recommend to take research methods with her, but stats only if you understand math.
Whatever you do don't take her for Lifespan Psych. She is the worst prof and her tests are really unfair. I did all the textbook readings, went to class and studied from her slideshows and still got a terrible mark along with almost everyone else in the class. The average for our class was in the 60s while the class with the other prof got 90s
avoid her lifespan psych
I don't understand what all the bad reviews are about, she's super caring and an amazing prof- I 100% am going to try and have her again She takes the time to actually learn everyone's names and tries to have legitimate relations with everyone, super super sweet.
I don't understand why her rating is so low because she's is one of my favourite professors! Yes you have to work for your grade but she is the MOST caring professor on campus. Genuinely wants her students to pass and makes the effort to check in on them. Knows them all by name and knows how to explain hard topics in simple terms.
do not take her lifespan psychology! if you can take it with the other prof! lots of videos in class that WILL be tested on the exam. She is a tough marker and her exams are unfair.
This was probably the class where I worked the hardest in all my 3 semesters. I heard other people having much less course material (analyse a research paper), and we had to actually WRITE ONE. You learn important but non-obvious things to look out for when doing research. Other than that, pretty dry material, and weekly labs which add up to final.
Dr. Poole is truly a gem. She cares so much about her students and is always developing supplemental pedagogical resources and strategies to support them. She does her best to make tough material understandable and is an excellent stats professor. I would 10/10 recommend taking stats with her. If you need extra help, she is there for you.
She is a good person but not a great prof. Material is very dry and the lectures tend to be boring. Dont skip class as most of the questions are based on what she says. Her voice cracks occasionally and I found that somewhat distracting
I really liked prof. Poole. You can tell she really cares about students, and she always throws in interesting facts about the content to make it more meaningful to our lives. For Psy1102 I made sure I chose her as my prof again!
She really tries to make stats easier but that doesn't always work out. Sometimes she will teach a topic overwhelmingly quickly which makes it hard for stuff to sink in. Its definitely a hard class, some other profs spend more time on material. Yet, if you want to continue into research, she really prepares you for the real world of research.
Lectures are super helpful. However, the book is needed to understand the details and examples. Lectures are simply a summary of the book. Most of the questions on midterms and final are example questions, not that many definitions. This class has ISPR, do it, that 4% can save your grade. She explains quite clearly.
Heather Poole introduced herself to the class by asking everyone who could remember the most amount of items on her desk 15 minutes before the class started. The items consisted of a water bottle and a purse. She then stated that those who did not memorize what was on her desk before class had a focus issue and should sit at the front of class.
I honestly thought that PSY1101 with Prof. Poole was a breeze. She explains concepts clearly and she posts lectures notes on BrightSpace before each class which creates no surprises. Study her lectures and read the textbook (optional) if you really don't understand. Midterms were fair and the final was easy. I wish I had her again for PSY1102.
Professor Poole has a welcoming aura that surrounds her. Shes engaged in the material and finds interesting videos and topics to discuss. Midterms are a joke as they are very easy MC as long as you study. The only thing I found unprofessional was that she canceled class 3 times. 1 or 2 times is fine, but it is unacceptable to keep canceling class.
I really like Prof Poole, her lectures are engaging and she's really good at explaining things. The course is pretty easy, but make sure you read the textbook.
She seems nice enough, but her classes are amongst the most boring I've attended. I never leave with the feeling of having learned anything. She spends most of her lectures asking students to talk between themselves before she writes their answers on the board and her voice can be distracting as it sometimes cracks and comes out squeaky.
She managed to take an interesting subject area and make it very boring and dry. She is not the best presenter yet she marked our online zoom presentations quite harshly for things like enthusiasm and eye contact ( with a webcam...). She does often end class pretty early which is nice. If you are really interested in the subject try and avoid her.
Compared to other psychology profs at uOttawa shes not bad. Her curriculum is fair, with a presentations and two midterms. But as a person, shes really unpleasant. Even though I performed well in the class and loved the topic I found it really hard to like the class
I found her lectures to be quite interesting, she likes engaging with the class and I enjoyed that. Exams weren't too difficult as it was mostly based off of the textbook. If you miss a class you can usually make it up by reading the text book to add to your notes as her slides are pretty vague.
I'm a first-year, and doing online classes during first-year has been anything but ideal. Out of all my professors, professor Poole's lectures have been the clearest, and she has done the most to make ensure that we aren't struggling. She is a really good professor, and she posts her lectures in three videos of about 5 minutes, it's super helpful!
Her online class is literally to just read the textbook and fill in the reading modules. Textbook and Tophat are mandatory - expensive! Her lectures are useless, don't have anything to do with whats on the quiz No interaction with prof - just read the book and take good notes and you'll be fine Marked on 4 quizzes and a final, all multiple choice
Class consisted of reading the textbook on TopHat and answering module questions. Her lectures are 5 minutes long and only help understand general concepts. They try to give you "application" questions on the quizzes but the questions are not specific and you have to make tons of assumptions on what its asking. 1 error 6-10% down on your average
Dr. Poole is a good choice for a psychology course. Everything is based on the textbook, so study that. You should have a pretty good grasp on concepts. Questions can be a bit confusing to understand, but such is university.
Do all the readings and the tests should be easy. Can't just listen to her lectures because they were short and just skimmed the information. Readings take a while but they are engaging because the online textbook includes a lot of pictures as well as vids and practice questions along the way to make sure you understand. Tests were multiple choice
Open to feedback on how things can be improved while learning online. No trick questions on quizzes or exam.
Poole is one of the best uOttawa professors! She is very understanding and makes so much time for her students outside of class. She also teaches very well and thoroughly and truly understands what she's talking about. She gets a bad rap because she challenges her students, but I have taken 4 courses with her and I have learned so much from her.
Instead of set hours of lectures, she posts short and concise videos going over materials you read in the textbook, which is a nice review/summary if you are into that. You do need to read the textbook though, just watching the lectures is NOT going to be enough. She also holds review sessions before each quiz which is very helpful.
Have to buy textbook and access to another platform which was kind of annoying. Reading the textbook is important as all quizzes and exams are based off it. She's approachable, accessible and really nice and held review sessions before each quiz. Gave lots of opportunities for people to ask questions, although course was hard would recommend her.
all you do is read the textbook. the lecture are SOOO short and no help at all. I was really disappointed by this class.
I don't know enough about Poole's teaching methods in-person, but online they were really poor. Two lectures split into a mandatory "active learning session," and the other a link to a 10-20 minute long Youtube video. It was very disappointing because the topic of the class was so interesting, but it was difficult to learn with her teaching method.
She's a tough grader, beware of the 2 papers. The lectures are useless - short youtube videos that don't teach you anything at all. Class is useless, break out rooms for group activities to answer 1 question then debrief that 1 question for the rest of class time. Attendance is for marks. Get ready to read the entire textbook and teach yourself!
I really like Professor Poole! The textbook is mandatory but it is an easy read and engaging with questions as you read the content. The quizzes reflect what was learned through the readings.
I've taken two classes now with Dr. Poole and I've enjoyed my experience both times. Read the textbook and be familiar with the concept and you'll be able to pass with flying colours.
PSY1102 is a self teaching class basically. Prof doesnt do much tbh but shes very kind and accomodating. I once had internet trouble and missed my quiz and she opened it again just for me which is very nice. Bad thing about the course is purchasing the textbook (which is a must) from tophat and its expensive. Lectures are short-uselessjustreadbook
Very sweet and caring. Just need to read the textbook and youll pass.
Prof Poole did recorded lectures, but they are totally unnecessary, since all of the content you need to know is within the online textbook on Tophat. Pretty easy A, as long as you don't procrastinate your readings & take the time to understand the content. She also offers office hours and study sessions, and is overall very nice!
I liked how Poole's lectures were short and sweet, only to cover the hard topics of the chapter mostly. You don't even really need to watch them if you delve deep into the textbook readings. All of the tests and exam were based off of the textbook and though it was a pain reading so much content, it pays off. Make sure you read the textbook!
Professor Poole is a great choice, she is very sweet and she has very short lectures for each topic covered in the course. These lectures are completely optional though and reading the textbook is the only necessary part.
This prof likes asynchronous classes. Before the first two quizzes, she held a class for review, and then the last two quizzes she stopped which kinda didn't help.
Dr. Poole is a nice person, however I didn't enjoy her as a professer. She recorded lectures but they weren't helpful/useful at all. She uploaded all of the info on tophat when it's unnecessary and cost more money, brightspace could've worked. All of her tests are formated the exact same, her final was literally everything and should've split.
Very much a self taught course! Really easy to do well if you focus on the online textbook homework. You do not need to watch the lectures, but they do help you to understand the concepts that you read in the textbook. Lots of your grade is distributed in smaller tests / homework, so if you mess up on one thing it won't hurt your grade much.
I just read the textbook and attended the mandatory active learning sessions. The lectures aren't really useful but she is easy to reach if you need help understanding material or have any questions. She also gives you the chance to do a bonus assignment at the beginning of the semester (not mandatory) if you really want to boost your final grade.
Only take this class if you can teach yourself. She posts short Youtube videos as lectures but they're useless. Just read and understand the chapters of the textbook and it's an easy A.
This was a super fun and easy class. I am more reviewing the class than Dr. Poole - because she was never there. Everything was prerecorded or through a different site. But again great class!
I enjoyed Prof. Poole, she always attended class and delivered the material in an easy-to-follow manner. Her lectures have videos and class-wide activities. The grading is completely based on midterms and the exam all of which are multiple choice. if you aren't good at multiple choice get ready, that is the only way you are earning your grade.
Her midterms are so hard, it's genuinely frustrating. The final is fine because it isn't written by her though. The slides seem relatively easy until she formats her multiple choice questions to have multiple answers which could be right, then you just have to choose the answer which is the 'most' correct.
pretty good prof. the course is hard if you don't like neuro and the more "science-y" part of psych. she gives really clear guides of what to study for the midterms and final.
Midterms were pretty okay. Self-studying is key to success in this course especially for the exam since she doesn't write and and doesn't cover a portion of it, so information is learned via textbook. Lots of oral notes and is an engaging course.
So unclear and unaccommodating. Test question wording is awful. By far the most disorganized class I have taken in University. If you like clear instructions and explanations, and expect your professor to adhere to any form of a schedule do not take a class with her. All 5 TA say different info, so clearly she is not in communication with them
Her midterms were definitely a lot harder than the final. If I hadn't passed the final, I would have failed the class lol. she is a fine professor, her tests are just very difficult.
Overall an okay prof, especially if you like the harder science part of psychology. Lectures are good but most of the studying has to be done from the online textbook. The tests are multiple choice and often have some unclear wording, but she did make it clear what topics would be covered.
yeah shes nice, and yeah she knows her stuff. it is just too bad her lectures are 3 slides long and filled with ambiguous class debates surrounding various theories of personality. makes you do free labor for the career corner at the school. makes you do an additional course for SMARTs which is useless. Useless class.
The most annoying professor I've had in my four years of university, not at all reasonable. Don't take her classes if you can! Run! I don't even know how in the world there can be such a professor!
this class makes me cry everyday
Terrible lectures, does not explain topics well at all. Midterms did not reflect what we were taught in class. Makes you buy an extremely expensive textbook, and hardly explains what we need to do in SPSS. Seems like a nice lady but awful class, I'll never take one of her classes ever again.
Lectures are utterly useless. She makes us spend $150+ on a textbook, but the midterm questions do not align with any of her suggested practice problems from the book. Midterms are unnecessarily hard, basically a guessing game even after doing all the readings and practice problems. An extremely disorganized prof who does the bare minimum
This class makes me cry more than biochemistry and orgo did. AVOID!
She is a really sweet professor and wants all of her students to do well. Yes, psych is a bit of a heavy class BUT if you study and apply yourself during lectures it is so easy to do well.
Delivery of course content always seemed very disorganized. Always had little assignments to turn in that are not in the syllabus, so it is very easy to miss assignments. Very very unclear instructions on projects and tests, making it very difficult to get a high mark. Assignments had to be turned in in-person and hardcopy.
Course itself as well as expectations definitely could have been more organized or clear. It's hard to stay on top of all the little things that are due.
Awful class. Online lectures were posted randomly, never given at the beginning of the week. Exams in person, were ridiculously hard, with topics that had not been discussed. Many topics you had to teach yourself before the exam from the textbook since they weren't in the slides. Avoid at all costs, terrible class, terrible design & terrible prof.
This course is a horrible hybrid of stats and a huge group assignment. Lectures don't represent exam material, guidlines are vague but grades are harsh. You need to pay 90$ for the textbook/Quiz even though the textbook is free online. Quizzes are impossible. Peer evaluation is graded and anonymous which only serves to promote group conflict. Run!!
Asynch lectures of like
Dr. Poole is ok. I feel if you don't want to attend class at all but love reading textbooks then this might be a good option for you. - Lecture content is barely on midterms - Better off forming notes from the textbook, reading glossary & doing the questions - Midterms aren't the greatest - The final is better as the faculty writes it and not her
Didn't really teach. It was mostly a self taught course using the TopHat textbook. Test questions were reasonable and similar to practice questions from the textbook. Content was interesting. Her pre-recorded lecture vids were just summaries of the textbook chapters and weren't that helpful. Not hard to do well, but you gotta have self discipline.
I really love psychology and this prof teaches the material in a way that is interesting and engaging. Note that the tests are all MCQ's meaning that the questions tend to be tricky often searching for the most correct answer. Also, the final is written by the faculty and is often easier than the midterms because it's based solely on the textbook.
First midterm class average was a D+. Second midterm class average was a C+. I got a B+ on both and maintained a B+ the entire class until we got one of the worst finals ever. My grade dropped from a B+ to a C+. Thanks for ruining my self-esteem and CGPA, that's all my hard work down the drain. The averages are reflective of the teaching style ...
I lost my scholarship because of this course despite having 10s and 9s. This course was MISLEADING. The video lectures were posted at random and do not at all reflect what should have been focused on. This class incentivizes you to quit to save your sanity and sense of self-dignity because of how degrading the process of following this course is.

Most students taking her classes are psychology students meaning we don't have a very good mathematical background which is why some students find stats difficult. If you study and continuously familiarize yourself with concepts the testing is very fair and focuses on main concepts. She is a very kind and understanding professor.
Really great prof, amazing teaching style . The exam study guide took a lot of chapters put which helped a lot howeverrr u r going to do a lot of TEXTBOOK READDFINNGGGGGH
She teaches all over the place, lectures not clear. You have to study on your own btw
does not teach (enough said)
BORING (yapping for an hour) Don't know why students ask goofy garbage questions She is a nice person tho (no hate)
I will definitely not take a class with her again. There's no point in going to her classes because she just repeats stuff that are in the textbooks. She gives review sheets for things to memorize for ur midterms or exams and they're always so long and she gives you so little time to memorize it all. It's 100% a self taught course
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Lectures r VERY boring and so skippable, she's simply repeating a few unimportant details from the textbook (ur teaching urself everything). She gives very minimal practice to prepare for tests, and the questions are rigged for failure. The midterms are horrible with class medians in the 50s, heard the final is slightly better.
She's a nice woman and her classes are interesting but her midterms are not worth it. Her midterms include stuff from both the textbook and the lectures and the questions are so so specific. The average for both the midterms in my class were in the 50's. The final is better because she's not the one writing it.
I lost my scholarship with this course, and I'm surprised I didn't shed even a single tear whilst taking it earlier this year.
Teaching is boring/vague, the lectures provide no detail which makes it easy to skip the lectures. All learning is self-taught and you basically have to teach yourself all the content through an online textbook. The midterms are hard and questions are worded to trip you up. Studying is easy if you enjoy learning from a textbook with long paragraphs
The worst professor at UOttawa. PLEASE do not take this course with Heather Poole if you care about your CGPA. Not only are her lectures awful and scattered, super hard to follow, the textbook she provides does not include symbols for formulas ( multiply or divide) . Midterms and final were brutal. Got an A in stats 1 and will fail this course.
AVOID THIS PROF/CLASS AT ALL COSTS. The worst prof at UO. Lectures are garbage/useless, textbook is unclear, and Poole only responds to emails after it's too late. The class average was a 58% going into the final. Crazy to me that a stats professor can only teach 58% of the material. Labs were trash, assignments took weeks-months to get back. 0/10.
This professor cannot teach, her lectures are awful and the textbook she assigns is equally as bad. Mandatory weekly quizzes, horrible labs, and even worse tests with no guidance lead the class to have an average of 62 going into the final. Her teaching skills definitely are reflective of the overall students average.
Poole should lose her teaching license. Lectures are pointless and don't cover any of the content on exams. Labs are ridiculously specific and are there to lower your grade. Exams are insanely hard and try to trick you. Get ready to teach yourself, because Poole takes 0 pride in teaching and does not care for the well-being/success of her students.
Exam is different than what we talk about in class. So much reading for this course too.
Poole does not care to properly teach/cover the material she tests on, and this shows in her class average being a 58% going into the final. Not only did she make the final extremely long, with over 70% of students staying the full 3hrs, but it was not what she said it would be. It seems as though Poole is faking good reviews to keep her rating up.
Quizzes almost every week in tutorial. Some easier than others - almost the entire class did poorly on them. Put effort into the two take home assignments - good way to boost your grade. Two midterms, two assignments,12 quizzes but only 10 count, and a final exam. Her exam questions are more understanding the material and not calculation based.
She was very helpful during office hours and whenever you have a question. However, the tests are too hard and her lectures are ok but everything is in the textbook. The tests doesnt test your knowledge regarding the class, it tests you if you can identify the most right answer (there's 5 options).
Avoid Poole at ALL COSTS. Does not cover the material, does not test on material "covered", picky on assignment grading, and overall should not be teaching a mandatory stats course. The class average was around 60%, and this is representative of her as a prof. Midterms and final were INSANELY difficult. Half the class failed/barely passed. BAD.
Much harder than other psych profs. Barely teaches anything and is LAZY. Said she would never ask one thing on the midterm then half of the mid term was what she said wouldn't be on it. Final is good because she is too lazy to contribute. TAKE ANY OTHER PROF IF POSSIBLE
Her lectures were a waste of time (certified yapper), just read the textbook instead. You will have to read it but it is only 7 modules so do it early and you will be finxe. Her midterms and final was not hard at all. Midterm 1-didn't study at all-B+. For midterms her study guide was useless, don't look at it, unneccessary and boring.
She's nice, but wastes time answering irrelevant questions (became tedious to attend class and barely learn anything). Midterms are hard, overall class didn't do good. She teaches final lessons the class before midterms (like midterm was Friday, final lesson on Wed). No time to make flashcards and truly learn. Exams focus on TOPHAT
Avoid Dr. Poole. She is a horrible professor. The class average is 58. Her grades make no sense, she will give two people who hand in the exact same assignment drastically different marks. Her midterms are impossible, you do not have nearly enough time to complete them, over half of the class failed because of this. She does not want you to succeed
Go to lectures, she is very helpful
Only class I've ever dropped. Do not take poole
Poole is a decent prof. Her exams reflect what was covered, but she expects a lot of reading from the textbook. Her exams can also contain very specific info, so each slide needs to be memorized. Mostly mcq with 2-3 short answer questions. Whenever she lectures, she always speaks like shes out of breath. Not the worst but there are better options
Okay so participation *technically* doesn't matter, but it's definitely taken into account. Heavy on group projects, so many peer/self evaluations. prepare to check Brightspace daily or you'll definitely miss something. Communication with group members is tracked and she will reach out with email if you're lacking.
Don't be fooled! I had her for psy1101 and she was kind then,so I ignored these ratings.Don't play yourself by taking her course and expecting leniency for emergencies. Participation is *optional*. *even if you have a valid reason + proof, she takes absences as a reason to single you out and mark you as much harsher and that is unfair to groups
The professor is nice and provides lots of content, but be ready for difficult exams with tricky wording and complicated material. Questions seemed as though they were worded in an intentionally difficult way. Lectures could be hard to follow at times also. Be ready to study lots; the class average was quite low.
Dr. Poole did a good job conveying the material and helped me understand stats better. However, it seems like she's aiming for a low class average. She kept telling us that most of us wouldn't be able to finish the first midterm and we'd run out of time. The assignments weren't too bad but the tests were hard.
professor was very disorganized and tests were unfair. Final is easy because she doesnt make it but good luck with the mid terms. Take with any other psych prof.
Included group projects, two midterms, a paper, and a final exam. Going to class is important for your notes. Very involved in the group projects to ensure it went smoothly. She gave me an extension when I was having a rough time. I only asked for the rest of that day and she gave me 48 hours to hand it in :)
Take this as a sign to NOT take statistics 2 with her.
The midterms in the course were much harder than what we were prepared for
Lectures were easy to listen to and the material is interesting. She makes her midterms extremely difficult by trying to trick you. Makes an easy course difficult to receive a good grade. The exam was very easy because she did not write it. Beware of midterms but you will do fine on the exam as long as you read the textbook.
Prof. Poole's PSY2116 class is a real challenge. The exams are notoriously difficult, and the class average is often quite low. However, attending lectures and using study aids like unstuck AI can help you get through it. Overall, be prepared to put in a lot of effort.
This prof has a drunk style that people usually are not used to. Her mid-terms were full of traps, you have to reread every sentence 3-4 times before giving your answer else you will fall in her traps. Try to avoid her if possible, but it's not chaotic if you are stuck with her, at least she takes care of those who proactively reach her for help.
Lecture slides don't help you much, the readings are so long and her midterms are way different than what she teaches.
good prof. very organized. always provides clear criteria. uses top hat as textbook and it is very user friendly. very clear expectations. very understanding of personal situations. no homework other than reading. midterms and exam are relatively easy if you study and know the general content.
Honestly she's a really great professor the only thing I would say is that her midterms are much harder than what they really should be. She likes to use lots of real life scenario questions in her midterm multiple choice questions. Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand and her exam was way easier since it was made by the faculty.
Super unclear in her explanations and her slides were all over the place and difficult to follow. She would present the material and expected us to already know it. For a course with math in it, she should have been super clear and concise but wasn't.
niche things she says in lectures will be used on the midterms, but will not be on the final exam and some of her lectures conflict with the textbook. studied a week in advance of all midterms and quizzes but still struggled and sitting through her lectures are torture.
Definitely ask questions after class for further explanation. Her teaching style can be a bit challenging to understand the subject content. Otherwise, it was an interesting class and we had to present with a group
Idk why her rating's SO low she's genuinely such a good prof and uses very engaging examples/made-up scenarios to explain concepts. There are no lecture recordings. If you come to class and pay attention, you WILL do well on the midterms (bc they're based on the part of the textbook that's covered in class content). The final is all textbook.
Horrible prof. Lectures are general, but exams are detailed and tricky. Just rely on self prep and reading the textbook since the final is based on it.
I think she cares or tried to care about you learning. yet lectures messy, her tests are brutal. i did all her practice questions and was fine. she reduced 15 minutes of the exam time to "empty the class on time" so lots ran out of time. labs are ok attendance mandatory. class average was 53 and she did not cruve or give bonus points. AVOID HER.
Honestly, I would avoid this teacher if you're trying to get good grades… Unless you're actually a genius and great at multiple choice and memorization, avoid. She also won't help if you're not doing well in the class. Couldn't recommend less. This class made me loose my merit scholarship lol
She wishes downfall. Studied two weeks and got 22. Please do not take her, if you have other options take that. Please. She's evil.
She was very kind and engaging despite the large class. The class is hard, but as long as you study the textbook well you should be find. You NEED to study, and although attendance isn't mandatory, it will help you know what to focus on for the tests.
Stats is a hard course for many, but Professor Poole tried quite hard to make it as easy to understand as possible. She posted lots of practice questions, made sure the labs were helpful, and responds to emails quickly. She also holds frequent office hours. Her exams were fair, although some students ran out of time.
labs were mandatory (two lowest dropped). first midterm was brutal (started 10 mins late;ended 10 mins early). lowest class average ive ever seen. second midterm was better.assignments were good.she tries to be a good prof but her lectures were just not working for me or my friends. i wish she would give more practice questions instead of talking.
Don't walk, RUN!!! No pros, just cons. She sounds panting/gasping/wheezing all the time, once counted 138 times of "okay??" during a 3-hour class. 2 midterms, the final worth 55% and cumulative. The test material is absurdly arduous for no reason. How can this class stressed me out more than patho&pharma combined? Heather is definitely the answer.
Only talk and talk and talk... No practice questions. No assignments. No group projects. Cumulative for final. Give short answers to make life miserable. Test questions are worded ambiguously and misleading, like trick questions. After taking this class, I want to go back to my mom's womb.
Honestly worst prof ever. She is so not accommodating, can barely get a hold of her during her “scheduled” office hours. I know so many people who failed her class. Avoid her honestly, dont give yourself a headache.
Not sure if she gets off failing student but if you're a first year student and you have the choice. Do not take her. So many people dropped her class or failed. The average was a 4.2 (uottawa grading scale)
I enjoyed taking stats with her and I think her rating is so low only because stats is genuinely a hard class and you really need to get engaged with the material to succeed no matter the prof. Gave lots of examples and exercises to practice and had many office hours to ask questions. Posted many xtra videos for harder topics which was very helpful
The worst professor ever. Sets you up for failure. 55% cumulative final after 2 midterms and no other assessments. Do not take her class.
Made a hard class way harder. Very difficult to get a hold of and ask questions.
she's not bad, just doesnt care much about your future and is a tough grader.
I love her so much. Best lectures ever.
blamed the students for her poor teaching methods. made a fun and interesting class into a dreaded hell twice a week. also, if you have her, pay attention to how many times she says "kay" in a lecture, counting the amount of time she said "kay" was the only way I got through that class without ripping my hair out.
She is so boring, don't take her if you want to enjoy this class. She made it way worse and so uninteresting. Her voice makes it worse. I recommend taking a class with Dr Lorena Ruci. She makes class interesting and she is kind.
Honestly one of the worst profs ever never take her unless your ready to read 100 some pages in 2 days and fully know the material in 2 days to be prepped for midterms and quizzes
I actually didn't mind Dr Poole's class that much. Yes, like some of the other comments said, most of the lectures were a bit slow and boring. But honestly if you showed up and paid attention you'd mostly be fine. I will say there's only a quiz, two midterms, ISPR, and a final so its pretty tough if you mess one thing up. READ THE TEXTBOOK.
She's okay. Her lectures are interesting at first… then you realize that they are not very helpful for exams especially the final. You're better off reading the text book honestly. Her exam questions are worded weird. Be ready for answers that are like “all the above”, “a and b only”, “none”.
The tests include things that were never covered in class, and even if you study, the material never comes up.
horrible prof, delayed midterm 2 grade released of 10 days, then told eveyone its impossible to check ur exam because she s not in Ottawa and then dont give a fk about u anymore. To avoid at all cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very friendly and outgoing. She likes to do engaging interactive examples for certain lessons in order for you to grasp concepts. She makes jokes and her class is very fun to attend most of the time. Only issue is how hard her Midterms were. Even though I knew the content, the questions made it hard to understand what was being asked.
Each day I prayed a car would hit me on the walk to that class. Left each class feeling very rage baited. No test material is what was taught in class. Exam study guide no help at all.0/10 experience
Genuinely, as someone who is not bad at math, this course was impossible to get a good mark in. She prepares you SOOOOO HORRIBLY for any exam - the examples done in class are nothing like what's given on the exams. No matter how much you try to do all the practice material, she will somehow manage to make exams sm harder. avoid... Avoid... AVOID!!!
I want to start by saying I am NOT good at math. This course is not about math; it's about using logic to plug and chug equations. Dr. Poole cares about you and your success, hence why you're allowed cheat sheets for exams. I was scared going into this course, and although there were concepts that confused me, she offered ample resources to succeed
I had a better experience with other statistic profs. Yes the content can be hard sometimes, but the prof just made it more harder or confusing. Save yourself the trouble honestly.
While her lectures are good, she is an incredibly harsh marker, and so are her TAs by extension. Be wary that every tiny detail matters while writing tests. Her midterm and quiz sessions are also very disorganized, with piles of hundreds of backpacks and coats at the front of the room creating a tripping hazard for students. :(
Such a good prof. Her lectures are super engaging and she really wants to ensure students are following the material. Tests were very fair and exactly the material provided. Made me really excited to be studying psych and really hope to be able to take more classes with her in the future.
For what could have been a horrible class, the prof made it so great. So caring about students, and would adjust lectures in real time if we were struggling or she could see that we just didn't have the energy that day. Definitely make use of her office hours, she was super helpful in explaining concepts 1-on-1 and going over midterm mistakes.
Prof. Poole is so extremely caring and understanding. If you are having difficulty I recommend asking her one on one, she is very willing to explain anything you arent understanding.
If you can do every question in the exam reviews she posts then you're guaranteed at least an 80. She's also always opening office hours, asking if people have questions, offering to make videos about confusing topics... I think she cares a lot. But her lectures explain concepts, not how to actually answer questions on the exam. Use the textbook.
Midterms were hard, final easy as it was made by the department
she makes the midterms so hard for no reason. exam was super easy because it's made by the faculty and based off the textbook but by then your grade is already cooked because you probably bombed the midterms. if you care about having a high gpa do not take her
