Mrs. Sklenicka is a talented professor. Her classes are fun and she lets students bring in a half sheet of paper with notes so no need for cheating on a test. My only complaint is one time when the class only averaged 71%, she forced us to decimate our ranks.
She is strict and her tests are hard! Only take her class if you have time in your schedule for it. Not a sluff class! Sometimes she gets mad and doesn't like answering questions.
Her test are very hard, you have to read her lectures and the book but you have to be prepared if you wanna take her classes.
Her tests are time consuming and not clearly written.

I used to know chemistry well, 2nd yr teacher, made a ton of mistakes doin problems in calss, cannot do math in he head, relies on a calculator. Test are wayy to long and wayy to hard, often doesnt cover what was taught. Class average was %40 on tests, 55% for the class at mid sem. Never take her.
knows the subject but can be distracted by bad questions in class. dont expect an easy grade, but is fair.
Had her for 2 sem. She knows the stuff.Hard test to complete in an hour. She tries to look helpful but she resents it when student ask for it. She gets mad and annoyed. She needs to finish her anger-managment class before teaching anything. If you have another choice, don't take her class. It is hell!!
Well, she's definetly intelligent. Her presentations are organized with powerpoint and that's a plus. But really, don't expect to get more than a C in this class. Oh, and you'll have to work for that C.
She steals her materals from other colleges. She can't write her own materal. She copies her notes from the book. She doesn't come up with her own examples. Can't make up her own labs. She would be a better Organic teacher then Inorganic. She has mood swings.
Do not take her class if you can think of other choice. She is annoying, unclear, hard and moody.Don't expect better than C(after studying whole night). She is the most discouraging teacher I have ever seen. She makes you feel stupid.Class average <70%(it's all your fault!)Thank God I got out of the class with a C Good luck for those who have to suffer!
Dr. S is a good professor who always comes to class enthusiastic and prepared. Exams can be tough, but weekly quizzes and labs can bring it up. She can be strict in grading, but is always more than fair. She takes extra time to help you during office hours. Chemistry is tough, this class is no exception. Be ready to work hard and study often!
DON'T TAKE CLASS WITH HER!!!she is smart but don't know how to teach.
she is an okay teacher, but she doesn't care about her students at all. i was docked points that should have been corrected and she told me, "oh well we're not going to worry about that. it's not important." whatever, it's just my grade...

VERY condescending. don't ask a question in class, she'll rip your face off. creates a hostile learning environment, I couldn't learn material- fearful of what she'll say, how i am just not as good as she is at chemistry or w/e. doesn't realize that her job is to get her students to understand material. its irrelavant whether she does or not.
I don't think I've ever had a teacher that graded with such laziness; most of the grading is based on 5 stupid, pointless quizzes. They're called competency quizzes but they're graded by an incompetent computer that uses some form of exponential notation that I think she just made up. I should have taken Earth Science.
I hate her with the intensity of a thousand suns. Her teaching method is so insulting that she almost blames us(her students) for her having to take the time to grade the crap she gives us. Her class is as helpful as the movie "Gigli" was popular. I walked into her class like a jogger runs into a pile of dog crap on the sidewalk. Waste of time
I went into chem 1117,thinking that I had a good understaning of what was to come.Until the tests. It seems that testing is based on what we go over in class and stuff we didn't touch, I feel duked and the tests are an AHA! Gotcha moment, instead of a learned situation. It must be Common knowledge then, AHA! for a chem prof maybe.
She is PURE EVIL!!!!! Don't ask a question in her class she makes you feel STUPID!!!! Her test have nothing to do with what she teaches. She talks about what a wonderful ORGANIC chemist she is, but she is a TERRIBLE teacher!!!!!! Stay clear if all possible!!!!!
Dr.Sklenicka is a very good teacher. The quizs are for you sake not hers, the tests are tough and if we didn't go into that much depth in class- you had to buy a book REMEMBER- read it, thats why you bought it...No this class is NOT for lazy students. And for crying out loud, use your ears thats why god gave you them~We went over all that was on test
Knows her topic, doesn't lecture well or keep on topic in a way you can follow. Fine chemist, needs to refine teaching skills.
varys in intelligence
Okay, we know she's a PhD and reminds us every class. Bottom line is she's killing the majority of the class. Knows chem, doesn't know how to teach. "Never again" with this one. And what's this stuff about having to pass a competency on top of grades for everything else? You don't measure success by how many students you washed out of a course.
I thought she was great. You have to put time into class, welcome to college. She gives you alot of oppertunities to get points. You dont have to just worry about tests. I came in for help alot and she was great. She was nice and helpful. This class is not for lazy students. You will have to work at it. The material is hard not the teacher.
Wow! Looks like the below are comments from the people that feel they deserve 'A's simply because they turned up! A great professor with good subject knowledge and genuine ability to teach. Get off your butts people and do the work.
Dr. Sklenicka is very intelligent and knows what she is talking about, however just because she is knowledgable doesn't mean she should be a teacher. She is rude, condescending and very intimidating. She creates a very uneasy atmosphere. I do all the work and am doing well, butI still wouldn't recomend her to anyone!

Made class harder than it had to be
VERY HARD class. Dont expect to slide by even if you're good at chemistry. Her exams are extremely hard. And she has three quizzes every week. Plus, you have to pass three compentencies before the class is over. MAJOR PRESSURE! She is VERY intimidating to talk to. I felt very uneasy going to her for help. Shes very knowledgeable at what she teaches
Very bad teacher, knows her stuff but cannot bring knowledge to students level of knowledge to actually learn it! Very difficult to understand her teaching. Tests are impossible to finish within the time given and you will see stuff on there that's not taught to you. Very unapproachable teacher! I am NOT a LAZY student and still struggled a lot!
if you want to get a good grade, you must be willing to work hard for it. Not an easy class.
This is a hard class! There are quizzes online everyday you have class and competencies that you have to pass. The competencies were the hardest things because the computer graded them and computer was wrong---the final is hard, but she did curve it. There is some extra credit available though. This is not a class to slack in.
Not helpful, talks down to students who make the mistake of actually asking questions in class. Overly self impressed with her doctorate - NOT a teacher, more of a bully. Test questions are filled with 'gotcha' stuff. Worst possible choice if you have to take chemistry at RCTC, especially if you're in Nursing or a program where GPA's important.
Take her for organic chemistry if you want to learn something.
Everything I know about Organic Chemistry I've learned second semester with Dr. S...except for naming! She's a nice person and a great teacher, but the tests are VERY difficult. She's very excited about organic, which makes it enjoyable to have her as a teacher.
Tough, but I got by looking at her--she's hot.
Worst teacher ever!! When a insrtuctor states 80% of the class is going to fail then you know she is not there for the students, she is there because it is a job. She talks down to you, makes you feel stupid, and she has no right to make you feel this way. She is a bully. passing the compentcy is bull---- when you are passing her exams.

Test are all essay making them rather difficult. She is very picky on the details of your answers. She teaches a freshman level course at a senior level which can sometimes be difficult to grasp. She does not curve, even when nobody in the class got an "A" at the end.
Tough but fair
Great teacher. Eager to help you understand. Very approachable. Great teaching style. Would definately take again.
Dr. S seems to have improved from her previous comments. I was prepared for hell when I started her class to be pleasantly surprised once attending. She lectures on powerpoints, adding notes to her slides, and that's the material she tests on. I felt she was very approachable. And spend lots of time practicing drawing carbon structures!
Dr. S is the single BEST chemistry teacher I have EVER taken. This includes HS, and four years of college. I wish I could have taken her for both semesters of Ochem.
I highly recommend her for chemistry. she is an excellent teacher. Her lectures are all on powerpoint and she prints them off for you. Her power points are easy to understand too. Her grading policy is also really easy. She's really energetic, so you won't be falling asleep in class. She knows her stuff and is good at explaining them.
Great teacher.
Knows her stuff, but I think that is the problem. Makes students feel stupid. Material gone over on power point lectures. Tests are EXTREMELY hard. Alot of stuff that she assumes you should know that was not in the lectures. Little to no extra credit, and low class averages on tests! Very Very hard teacher, but GREAT CHEMIST...students BEWARE!!!!!
Having a good teacher at the front of every classroom should be the number-one priority in public education.Professor Sklenicka is real bad teacher. Bad, bad. bad. teacher.
Difficult class. She has a tendancy to talk down to her students and make them feel dumb. She was, however, very helpful and was very flexible with meeeting with people. Very low test scores and would not curve scores. Good person, bad teacher...
She is the best teacher!! I would love to have her again
not bad. pretty smart. really nerdy
inconsistent with online testing. Lectures sometimes really hard to follow
Yes she is a bit nerdy but she was the best chemistry teacher I ever had. I took two chemistry classes prior and failed both, in her class I got a B. She has a good style of teaching that actually makes you understand. Easy points for attending lecture and lab.
Great teacher and person, yet her class is hard, she tends to have low average scores. Her only flaw is that she seems to make you feel inferior. Almost as if she tries to rub in the Dr. in front of her name.
BEST TEACHER EVER! She is what every teacher should be. She is clear, concise, fair, fun & ORGANIZED. She is a pictoral teacher. The people that typically criticize her are often the ones who dont know how (or how much they need) to study (>15h/test). I've had 2 prev OChem profs and she beats them both by miles. I highly recommend her class!
Failed course due to not taking competency exams. Aside; She's fun, helpful, average difficulty, and she's hot. Did I mention she's hot? Attend all lectures, participate, read the book and review notes, do the exercises and you'll get the grade you need. I fell behind and still managed to catch up, despite failing in the end. Oh yeah, she's hot.
If you need to take a chemistry course, I don't recommend taking it with her. She expects you to know the information. You have to do a lot of learning on your own. Also, the lab was the worst chemistry lab I had ever taken. Overall, very hard class.
I studied pretty hard for this class and still didn't do very well. I wouldnt recommend taking Chem 1117 with her. I did the online quizzes (which provide 0 feedback), and passed the competencies and still didn't do so well. The tests don't reflect the material she teaches in class. If I had to give any advice its this; beware, she's a lazy teacher
She gives you the tools and you need to use them
I highly recommend this teacher. She is very helpful and kind, and makes chemistry interesting. She is awesome!!
Dr. S is by far one of the best professors I have had. She truly wants her students to suceed. I did earn a B, which is usually dissapointing for me, but I feel it was wholeheartidly fair. She is brilliant, attentive, and a great lecturer. Go into her class expecting it to be challenging and to work hard and you will enjoy her class very much!!
Excellent teacher, but expects students to have near perfect attendance. Writes difficult tests, but they come straight from lecture and lab, so if you show up and think you'll find her to be extremely helpful.
I base teachers on thier ablilty to teach and thier eagerness to help when needed and how approachable they are. This woman lacks in all areas greatly. She is rude and impatient. I felt like I needed to go to other means to get help. The online stuff she uses is buggy and some of the material is not covered in lecture or book. A V O I D
I strongly disagree that with the bad rating below. I have found Dr. S very approachable, and she is definitely not rude or impatient. She is very passionate about her work. She expects you to work hard, but is very willing to help you. Highly recommend. Attend all the lectures, do all the quizzes, and you'll get a good grade.
she teaches well and is also funny which makes class more interesting. i think spending more time on each subject would have been beneficial but was overall good. just do your homework and show up to lecture and you should do fine.
I feel that Sklenicka has changed since 2004. Tips to do well: do competency and lab quizzes until a perfect score (you get multiple attempts online and the highest is chosen). Tests are worth about 48% of grade. Goal sheet and stuff from competency is EXACTLY on test. Day of test, get a take home test. Due next class day. Recommend email for help.
She is not as great as people make her sound to be. When you ask for help in person, she makes you feel inferior. She can be kind of arrogant. Tests are very hard & it is a very fast paced class in general. She's okay, but not as great as she thinks. She teaches as if everyone wants to major in chemistry which is nonsense. She's average at best.
I am so happy I took this class with Sklenicka! She is so easy to get along with. She is very helpful if you ask her questions. This class is not an easy A. Her tests can be difficult but if you study and make the effort to really learn the material you will do fine. I would recommend taking this class with her any day. I learned a lot! :)
Dr. Sklenicka is a great teacher. She explains concepts in a simple and easy to understand way. Expect to study and make sure you are understanding as you go. She made chemistry very interesting. I would take another class from her in a heartbeat.
Excellent!
She is very likable as a person but as a professor I believe she is lacking. A lot of time is wasted, and examples of how to successfully complete the kinds of equations that one should be able to complete are not given. Asking a student to complete a problem you've never walked them through isn't teaching, it's testing. There's a lack of guidance.
I would definitely not recommend taking her class. She is nice and funny, but moves through material far too fast. Her final is living hell, she gives you a review sheet for it, but there is so much on the final that the review sheet doesn't cover. Get ready to start popping Xanax pills if you take this class.
You will either love her or hate her. I loved her. She goes through material very quickly, but her lectures are great-I never even needed my textbook, and just used her notes. If you put in the time, you should do well. Her tests are very hard-if you're looking for an easy science credit, look elsewhere. If you want to learn chem, she's great.
Dr. S is awesome. She teaches a very difficult class but does her best to be sure that students understand. She has a great sense of humor and makes 8 am lab bearable. I would suggest this class if you are willing to work hard and focus.
She's unapproachable, consdecending, and moves very quickly through material as if we should understand it instantly. She's a great chemist, but very self-righteous. As many others on here have said, she makes you feel stupid and inferior when asking for help. She clearly doesn't care about her students. I have little respect for her as a person.
I'm still not sure what I think! At times I was highly frustrated, can save money not buying the book, info in PP's. She is clearly a bright person, passionate about Chem. Helpful during office hours. Tons of work but she does care, trying to get people for the real world. Sapling was a savior. I did end up learning Chem, which was the whole point.
Dr. Sklenicka is very passionate about Chemistry - you can pick that up on the first day. She expects you to do your job, which is be a college student. She has zero time for slackers. My recommendations: do the Sapling homework on time - don't miss lab and attend all of her lectures. Easy points! Exams are hard - you must study!
Dr. S can be a bit condescending, but is majorly helpful when you ask for help. She tends to be practical and to the point.
Not as I expected. Even though her teaching style is not boring at all compare to other teachers but her way of explaining is kinda just to get it done. A lot of energy but none spent for student. Kinda do the job to get it done, not passionate about teaching although extremely passionate about chemistry
Dr. S really makes you work for your grade. So, go to all of the lectures, labs, and even her office hours which she has throughout the week if you really want to do well in the class. Overall, a great teacher and recommend her to anyone who really wants to really learn about Chemistry.
I had to take her as a professor because no one else teaches the class. She's very energetic and kind of nice. She super passive aggressive and makes you feel dumb. I hated coming to class. I would have rather taken a different professor.
Had a decent time with this class. I agree with another student's review of her. She does have a lot of energy and seems compassionate about chemistry but does not put a lot of effort towards the student's education. She highly recommends you to make yourself learn from the textbook. Some stuff on the final exam were not taught by her at all.
Makes you work for your grade. Great person but not the best professor to teach chemistry. Lots of lab reports. Expects you to understand material from reading and the "Connect" assignments. Tests are confusing and her notes are the same for the last few years.
doesn't lecture enough and cannot explain the material
She is definitely not one of my favorite teachers ever. The tests are difficult, she barely taught the class anything, makes you do the work without really any help. None of the students in this class are doing well that I know of. I'd suggest finding a different teacher if you wanna pass.
I love Dr. S. I would take every class from her if I could. Her lectures are short and to the point. I read my book before class though too. She genuinely cares about organic chemistry and her students. If you don't listen or follow instructions, you might get a bit lost and then she can short. She is extremely organized. Directions clear.
Dr. S has an intimate understanding of the subject matter she teaches. When we work on assignments in class in groups, she'll make herself available to all groups to offer help when needed. She is enthusiastic and clearly cares about us students! Lectures make sense by the end (the concepts are just confusing in and of themselves). Great teacher!
awful. was an in person class but we werent given one lecture. the tests were almost impossible because there was no material to study it on besides online videos that she made that never helped. the absolute worst professor ive ever had in my entire life. dont take her course unless you want to learn organic chemistry completely by yourself
Does not teach you anything. She doesnt lecture, instead she sits on her phone while you try to teach the material to yourself. She didnt lecture one time and just expects you know what you are doing. Probably the worst class Ive ever taken. Do not recommend to anyone
DO NOT TAKE HER. Unless youre a genius and can learn it all on your own. she is not helpful and does not lecture. the worst teacher ive ever had
Things I learned about Dr. S: she really loves Chemistry, and she really likes tea! This was an online class, and the toughest part was the lab portion. It is extremely challenging do the labs at home and by yourself. I would have probably preferred to do the lab portion in person. I had a bunch of things missing from my lab kit so double check!
Dr. S is very passionate about chemistry! The exams are difficult, but the class is manageable. The workload each week isn't heavy, but you will need to save time to study. The labs can be confusing as she is a little condescending when you ask questions, but she will help. She is also very reachable and will definitely help you outside of class!
Dr. Sklenicka cares about her student. She is willing to make herself free outside class to help students and is happy to ask questions. She's good at explaining the concepts needed for the class. She does go above and beyond what is required of her so that students learn and get the best experience.
I like everyone to take her clases!! Dr S is so amazing teacher. If you you will be with her you can successful very well!!
Tests are very difficult. Expect 10-15 hours of outside study time per week. Dr.S is a kind teacher which makes this class bearable and her lectures are insightful.
I took four chemistry courses with this professor. There were opportunities for study groups outside of class and you'll do well if you are self-motivated. However, she had a negative attitude toward her students and RCTC as a whole. Avoid if you might need a recommendation letter in the future or are looking for a mentor.
Dr. S has good lectures to watch as you learn the topics for the exams. Her labs are confusing, you have to research the labs before you go to class or she will yell at you if you don't understand things. She is a harsh grader and a difficult person to deal with and isn't the most understanding of her students and she very negative.
doesn't know how to teach chemistry
Her grading style is unique, and as long as you keep up, passing the class is very manageable. She may come across as intimidating at first, but she is approachable and genuinely willing to help if you ask. If you put in the effort, she'll take the time to get to know you and support your success.
