Prof. Tafel knows her stuff. Class is hard, map quizes every week, mid-term is a hard, and 2 take home essay tests. Expects class participation, she talks very fast. Visit her office for advise on take home essays to get a good grade.

One of the best professors at GVSU, I've had her 3 times (PLS 221, 282, 339). Suggest you take 221 before/concurrent 282 or 339. High expectations, quick talker. Very funny, VERY concerned with helping students do well. Visit her office hours.

Tafel is the best poli sci prof at GVSU right now. She is challenging but her STUDY QUESTIONS outline EXACTLY what she wants you to know, if you do the readings, which at times can be challenging you will do fine and enjoy the class. She's great!

Very difficult class, be prepared to work. Her study questions are very good, if you do your reading and answer the questions, you should be good. A TON of reading though. Again, only take this class if for whatever reason you want to work really hard.

She's hilarious and a fantastic prof. She outlines everything you need to know to do well in her class in her discussion questions. All you have to do is do the readings and answer the discussion questions. If you don't do the readings, though, she'll know and she'll call you out.

A lot of reading expected, discussion questions do help guide it though. Very helpful and willing to help out of class. Make the effort, ask questions and you will be fine. Have her read essays BEFORE handing in final copy.

She lays out explicitly at the very start of the semester what is required-- do it and you'll get the equal grade. The subject matter is fascinating, and she is incredibly learned and passionate. Some found the class boring; it is because the did not do the readings or engage the material.

She is the hardest teacher I have ever had here at GVSU and I have had some tough classes. I strongly advise not taking this class. She thinks everyone knows and loves Political Science. Keep looking for another teacher or you will be sorry.

This teacher is not only extremely hard and unclear, she is a complete witch to her entire class. I have never had a teacher act so condescendingly toward students, as Tafel is to my class. She treats the class like it were a capstone, and students like idiots. STAY AWAY.

Her class is in no way easy, if you aren't good at political science don't take it. There is a LOT of reading and she is a very difficult grader. However, she is always willing to talk to students outside of class, and you will learn a lot if you are willing to do the work that she asks if you.

A lot of reading, class is a lot of work and she makes no bones about it. If you go in she will help you A LOT on writing assignments. Getting a poor grade on those is your own fault, see her and she will help you. Any one who says she is not helpful never went in and asked for help.

This class is hard, but it doesn't make the professor bad. It makes me mad that people judge a professor based on their grade in the class. Professors who don't let you off easy allow you to grow. Professor Tafel is an excellent teacher. Just be prepared to work hard and learn a ton.

Tafel is a terrible teacher. She is a drill instructor. Get away right now. Expects everyone wants to lean about international relations. Tests, papers, and on-line quizzes are extremely tough. Prepare to study 50 hours out of class for ever hour in class. You will benifit form not taking her.

I'm not a very good writer and I didn't know anything about IR when I started this class, and it is very hard, but I learned more than I ever expected and got a lot better at writing papers. Her class was hard but worthwhile.

PLS is freakin' easy. People that whine about classes requiring work shouldn't be in college. I'm the laziest person I know but I don't blame the teacher for it. Tafel kicks ass. Some people think she is intimidating; she is young, female and intelligent. What's scary about that? Take her if you like to be challenged and treated as an equal.

Do not waste your time. She lacks professionalism, she is hostile and degrading. In a class of 32 students, we are down to 11. I watched her mock a girl that was unhappy with a grade she received on a paper saying, “What are you going to do, cry?” She also told a student that he will never get an A in her class.

One of my favorite professors to date. She is very intelligent and knew what she was teaching. She has a good sense of humor as well. The papers are semi-easy as long as you are willing to put some effort into it. I wouldn't say she's hot, but she's definitely not bad looking.

This prof was extremly hard. Online quizzes and papers were very hard as well. You litterally have to spend 20 hours a week studying for her class and that is not including the papers. It is impossible to get an A.

Holy balls is her class hard. When she says that you have to work to get an A she means it. Stop by her office, though, and she'll just about do the work for you. Meet with her and be prepared every day or expect your grade to suffer.

Clear, well spoken and intelligent. She requires you fill out reading questions, which basically makes keeping up on the reading a requirement, but it makes you learn the stuff. Yeah, you've got to try, but if you actually want to learn, its well worth it. (And in my experience, she's not intimidating, she just doesn't baby students.)

Dr. Tafel is a great prof. Yes, her class is very challenging and yes, you will have to work very hard, but if you are a poli-sci or IR major it is worth it, this is stuff you should really understand. I have found her to be very helpful outside of class.

People who complain about her must not be poli sci majors. She is pretty tough, but you will definitely learn more in her class than a crappy 103 class. Great preparation for future classes. Just do the discussion questions and come to class. Really not hard.

I wanted to like Dr. Tafel, but she made it so difficult. It's NOT that the course is challenging, at all. She's extremely moody and often downright rude. The course is laid out poorly and her teaching style makes it worse. Theme students, don't even bother registering. PLS students, don't think you've learned that much, even if you get an A.

I had Tafel last semester and she is a certifiable badass. Her classes are hard as heck, she's tough as nails and doesn't take any crap, but you learn a lot and she's good and knowledgeable about the subject. One of the best profs in the department, from now on she's my PLS professor of choice. See her in office hours if you have trouble!

There was an inverse relationship between how deeply I dealt with the material from this & related courses and how positively she reacted. Based on the example 'A' essay from exam 1, and reactions in comments in class, it's obvious that sycophantic praise for her and her field's brilliance and importance is the best way to succeed.

There is a lot of reading, but its interesting if you take an interest in it, and well, if you're not interested, why take the class in the first place to complain about it later... hello! While she is extremely knowledgable (esp. in Russia/Cold War history), she is ridicuolously boring and expects you to definitely do the reading and hence know the info upon which she will lecture. I do not reccomend taking a 3 hour class with her! Also she grades papers really tough, no one really knows what she is looking for in the papers.

Very tough class. A ton of readings, especially online journal articles (there's about 35 posted on Course Reserve) and you'll be required to read most of them. Weekly map quizzes and sporadic (timed) reading quizzes done on BlackBoard. She grades papers very critically, so know your stuff and don't b.s. Read your discussion questions for exams.

A lot of work goes into this class, and Tafel does not let you just slide by in this class. Expect to do a lot of reading and weekly quizzes on geography. She is a hard grader when it comes to your paper, so be prepared to spend a decent amount of time working on it.

You will learn a lot. Prof. Tafel is probably one of the most intelligent people in the department; lectures are engaging and easily followed. One needs to understand that she is impossible to please- A's are few and far between and she expects a lot out of her students (it's a tough course). You will feel both smart and defeated when its done.

Okay.... yes you will work hard Political Science 102 is hard but you will LOVE her. If you want to take a class that will push you so that way classes in the future will be A LOT easier then take her. Tafel is just AMAZING. Everyone should have to take her because she will prepare you for the future please trust me!!!!

The professor that had the most impact on me during my time at GV. I learned so much from her, she has gone out of her way to be helpful outside of class, and is extremely nice and funny. She is also one of the hardest professors I've ever had, and my A was the most satisfying I ever got because I earned it through hours of reading and hard work.

Do not take unless you are a PLS major and highly motivated. She rules the course as if it were graduate level. Work load includes: two exams (from rote), two reading quizzes (more like tests), aan oral 15 pres., 10-15 pg research paper in 4 installments plus 43 articles (waste of precious trees) are expected to be memorized for class discussion.

Very informative class. Material load is VERY heavy. Expect to read a lot, and answer questions on all of the readings. Class periods are supplimented with notes. You must participate every session, and be active in every aspect. This will not be easy for most, but it is easily passable.

Definitely not recommended for a non-PLS major. Unless you're passionate about the topic & willing to devote a heavy load of work into the class, try not to take her. I'll second that she's a bit mean-spirited & also sarcastic. Some of my questions were more mocked than answered. Definitely the deep end of PLS103. If you don't swim, you will sink.

Had Tafel for a many classes. I think she'd be better off teaching grad school since that's the work ethic she expects from students from the start. She can be funny, cool, and interesting but she also makes people cry. Make sure you can handle figuring a lot of stuff out on your own because she has no problem making you look like an idiot.

Makes PLS 103 much too hard for what the class should be. She expects a bit too much out of her students and doesn't make PLS103 a survey of world politics, but more a "lets talk about the things Dr Tafel knows" class. Has map quizzes, even though it's not a Geography class. Also, can be quite coarse to students if they are even slightly incorrect.

She has map quizzes because its a WOLD politics class. You need to know where the countries you're talking about are in the world to talk about them. She gives a lot of reading questions, and if you do them its really easy to get your participation points because she asks questions in class directly from those and the terminology sheets.

Tafel is extremely difficult, but I've probably learned the most from her as any other prof at GVSU. Expect exhausting amounts of research, reading, and projects, followed by lectures that summarize it all in no time at all. Get to know her personally, and she will help you tremendously. If you're up for a challenge, you will love Tafel.

If this is your first year at GVSU, I would definitely recommend not taking Dr. Tafel. Although she is very knowledgeable, she expects you to know way too much for a level 100 course. If you work hard (and I mean HARD), you will do okay. Do not slack and take every word she says to heart. Get a study group and meet frequently.

Professor Tafel will challenge most students, but as long as you keep up with the reading and review her lectures after every class, there's nothing very difficult about it. My major was polisci before I had Professor Tafel. She is the reason I'm now not. She is rude and condescending, and she belittles her students. She calls you out if you don't participate, but then makes you feel stupid when you have anything to ask or say. The only C I've EVER received was in her class, and I'm a senior.

The key to succeeding in the course is to do the work she assigns. Discussion questions just meant to make sure you read the assigned material. Don't be lazy in this class, that's for sure. But it's definitely not impossible; you just have to work hard. Devote much time to reading and homework.

Tafel is the best professor I've ever had at Grand Valley. I've heard a lot of negative things about her but just because she expects a lot from her students does not make her mean or rude. Well, she warned us in the beginning of this course. saying it is not High School part II but College. I guess from this experience I received a better education than I anticipated from Dr. Tafel. I received a lot more knowledge than I anticipated form Dr. Tafel. In the beginning of her course, she told us this wasn't high school part II but college. She is a great teacher. The class itself is kind of difficult, for a level 100 class, but it is manageable. If you are not a PLS major, don't take this class. If you are a PLS major, the class will be interesting to you, you just need to make sure to stay up on your reading. Also, follow her guidelines explicitly, especially for the final essay.

Personally, i thought the work load was a bit intense for a 100-level class, which most people were taking for gen-ed... but still learned alot. She is by far the toughest prof in the department and you have three exams, map quizzes, pop quizzes, reading quizzes, and a group project. She was tough but knowledgeable and I liked the learning. Professor Tafel is very difficult. Her note-taking strategy is quite confusing and all over the board; very hard to follow. The exams were extremely difficult for a 103 level class and the group project was extensive and difficult. She is a strong believer in busy work and a plentiful amount of quizzes (1-2 per week). If you're looking to take this class a Gen-ed. Don't. There are other classes that you can take to cover the requirement as a Gen-ed that are much easier to pass with a good grade. She honestly needs to calm down. She assigns way too much homework and readings. The readings are also extremely difficult, and oh btw, get ready to write a 15 page paper due by the end of the semester. This class literally takes double the time outside of class than any of my other 300 level classes. I would not recommend this class at all.

I can't even begin to describe how ridiculous she is. Way too much homework and readings. This is an undergrad class not a graduate one. Seriously, expect to read about 100 pages per week of extremely difficult, information dense reading, and she barely goes over it in class. Don't worry, she will test you on it, AVOID THIS CLASS!!

Makes this class much too hard for a 100 level. She's very smart, but tends to assume you're on the same level as her. Taking this was draining, and I'm a polisci major. Would not take her again she is a know it all and will make you feel dumb if you don't understand concepts. If you do not like history or politics don't take she won't make it easy. Her tests and exams are so hard even if you study and do the study guide I never skiped class and still struggled. About 2 quizzes a week and tons of reading and notes.

If politics and international relations aren't your thing, do not take this prof! If they are, you will certainly learn a lot. Tafel treats her 100 level Comparitive Politics course like it is a 300 level prep course for my capstone. This was extremely hard. Not only was there immense group activities that since it's a 100 level people didnt do anything on - but we were required to read 100% of the textbook, and I am confident that if I hadn't, I wouldnt have passed.

Dr. Tafel is the worst professor I have had at GVSU so far. I had an A the entire year. However, the final was so difficult and I have a B- now. She acts like this class is a 400-level class when its just 100-level. She is very discouraging, too. She said, if you think you understand the material just wait until the exam and laughed. Dont take!

Tafel is genuinely one the most knowledgeable and helpful professors I have ever had. She expects a lot from her students, but she WILL help you get there if you ask for it. She gives phenomenal feedback and really helps students to develop their semester long research papers. She is hardcore, no doubt. But you learn a ton from her.

This is the worst class I have taken during my 3 years at GVSU. There were generally 3+ assignments due every week and most of them were not important such as collecting notes and all of the content is taken directly from the book. I am in the education program and Tafel's teaching strategies were often mentioned in my classes as what not to do.

I loved Dr. Tafel! She is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. It is quite a lot of work for a 100-level class but I really felt like I learned a lot. I still don't understand why her rating is so bad. I love prof Tafel. Yes, she is a tough grader who assigns longer papers, but the classes are so interesting and she is wildly knowledgeable. As long as you keep in touch and do your homework, Dr. Tafel is a fine professor. She is a bit lecture heavy, expecting active participation, but is also open to questions about individual or group work. If you have a bad player in your group (like I did), she will not mark you down for the bad player's lack of work. Strong professor!

Not a bad professor and is very knowledgeable, but her style of teaching is not the best. In PLS 103 you get a group that you are assigned to for the entire semester. Powerpoints, papers, and a huge essay. If you're stuck with people who don't do the work, you're doing majority yourself. She expects way too much for a 100 level class. Book heavy!

Teaches absolutely nothing the entire duration of class, every day of the semester was spent going over hw. Dr. Tafel is passionate about what she teaches. She tries her best to answer any questions that her students have. Participation was VERY mandatory, but attendance isn't. If you don't answer questions twice every single class period, you will lose points. It's more worthy to not go to class since she doesn't deduct points for not going to class.

I find it extremely hilarious that a great school like GVSU allows IT to continue to be called a teacher. While she is very knowledgeable, the amount of work we're expected to do for this class is ridiculous. The content analysis project is huge and requires the manual coding of every paragraph of 50 different articles. It's far too much for a 300 level class, but she justifies it by saying a normal content analysis would have over 1000 articles.

Very tough grader with unnecessarily stringent grading standards, provides criteria that is so difficult to decipher executive dysfunction happens. If you enjoy doing group projects the entire semester this class is great. Heather will put you with a group of people you can barely rely on to get their work done and you will have an assignment with them at least once a week. Her lectures are hard to get through and have the same format for each class so it is very repetitive and lengthy. Additionally, she's the "perfect" professor, if you don't do things exactly how she would do them herself, she will mark you down. Also, if you're a above average writer be prepared for her to accuse you of cheating on your papers.

Heather was a terrible professor. Her classes consist of her just going over the homework, and if you don't remember every little detail she will guilt trip you for not knowing. The normal classwork is fairly easy and is just general notes. The exams are pretty hard and have a lot of content, but thankfully, you get a one-sided paper. Extra credit is pretty easy to get, and is in the form of tokens you can earn. The group project at the end is super hard though, and if someone doesn't participate, can blow up your grade.

If you're just taking her for a general gen ed, I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND RECONSIDERING! If you're a perfectionist with an obsession for political science, I would recommend Heather. She tells you it herself, she's very keen on rule following & doing things the right way, and if that's not you, prepare for a rough semester.

Dr. Tafel assigns groups for 90% of the assignments, which is probably why many of her ratings are so low. Her lectures are pretty straightforward if you have some prior knowledge of the subject, and her exams are notorious for being hard. I would recommend taking her if you're a PLS or IR major but probably not for gen ed credit.
