Awesome prof, very helpful and very clear. Not too hard, and is very helpful out side of class as well. She is pretty funny and I think one of the best profs at Grand Valley. Take her!!! If your not in her class, switch out!!!
Very helpful professor and will go out of her way to make sure you understand the concepts. An awesome teacher who is willing to slow things down if you are not catching everything. Also a very interesting class.
She is an awesome professor. Young and speaks on your level, though she is very intelligent. Do your readings and take notes and you will do fine. She also will discuss the readings if you are unsure about them, write down what she says cuz it will be on the exams!
Awesome prof. Class is decent; she goes over everything you'll need to know. Do your readings and your short papers and you'll be fine. Easy grader and will go over everything b4 the test. If you have to take this class, get it with Heather. You'll be glad you did!!!
AWESOME PROF!!! Heather was the best prof I've had at GVSU. She's makes the subject interesting and is very helpful and understanding outside of class. Get your short papers done early; they get harder as class goes on. Take this class with Heather--if you don't, you'll regret it.
She's one of the best teachers I've had @ Grnad Valley! She's extremely intelligent, but very down to earth and presents the material in a way that's very easy to grasp. She's a fair grader and like she says- there are no surprises on her tests. You will get a lot out of her class!
Class can be very boring at times, but she is extremely nice and her tests are very easy if you do the readings.
easy class! you read some interesting essays. even if you don't keep up on the readings, she goes over everything in class. She's nice and kinda goofy. But, fun class!
Great Professor! Makes you read a ton of material but connects everything together really well. After being abused by adjuncts at GV it is nice to have a real true to life phd in front of the class. She is the real deal.
Heather was an awesome Prof. She was funny and willing to help me out when I asked for help, especially outside of class.
Very great prof. She is very understanding and helpful. She knows her material. Class was fun. Get your papers done early (much easier). Take notes and you will do great on exams and quizes. Learned alot from her.
Very great prof. She is very understanding and helpful. She knows her material. Class was fun. Get your papers done early (much easier). Take notes in class on the readings and examples she gives and you will do great on exams and quizes. Learned alot from her.
She is a great prof w/ much enthusiasm in teaching. She does assign a lot of homework and there are daily quizzes (lots of busy work), but she teaches clearly and is helpful in all aspects of the class. Study quizzes for exams!! Also, pay attn to examples and keep up on the research project. Falling behind in this class can kill you.
Prof very nice and willing to help. I got a D on first test and she worked with me the rest of the semester and I was able to get a B+ in her class. She is one of the few profs that actually care about the students. Lots of reading and note taking but everything is very understandable. Take her she will help you in any way possible
I had her for a night class, and there was only one quiz from the reading each week. No tests or final exam. Had to write four essays for her, but she is extremely clear and helpful on what she wants. Curves almost everything you turn in to her. She assigns essay on first day and you have all semester to do them. I absoutely loved her. Take her!
i didnt think i would enjoy this class but she made it very enjoyable. there is a alot of reading but the books are interesting and you will like the things you read. she is a very good teacher, funny and nice get her if you can great prof
Wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be
GREAT teacher! Heather is by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. Like others, I took this class as a gen ed and had no interest initially, but she really made class fun and I enjoyed it. Definitely my favorite class this past Fall.
Didn't think I would be all that interested in this class. Just took it for a gen. ed. but it turned out to be an awesome class. She is good at teaching, makes class fun and interesting. Lets you know pretty much exactly what is on the tests, so study the review sheets and you'll do fine. Learned a lot. Fair grader. Def. should take her.
She is by far one of my favorite professors that ive ever had. Shes a sweet, kind person and her awesome personality makes the material much easier to swollow. I would recommend her to anyone!
She is awesome. The class was very easy. If you read the (very intresting and short) stories you will get an automatic A on tests and homework. It wasn't just easy though. You still learn SO much. Great prof, great class!
Had her for the Honors segment of 204, and she was just awesome. Always helpful and encouraging with a great sense of humor.
She was AWESOME!! Very fun professor, explains things well and answers any and all questions; makes it easier to grasp difficult material. You have to do all the reading if you want to get good scores on the quizzes, but the reading's usually not too bad and she does a great job making it fun! I highly recommend her!
She is very insightful, and really works to get in your head and open your mind. She makes you really think about ideas you hadn't, or didn't want to, before. There is a lot of reading, computer simulations, and quizzes, but the frequent quizzes help you keep on top of the reading, so its beneficial. And the best part is NO final.
Heather is the best! Very intelligent, helpful, and insightful. Really takes student input to heart. Assignments were always interesting, and papers were not stuffy college research papers. Classes were very discussion oriented and enjoyable.
Hands down Heather has been the best prof I've had @ GVSU! This class was amazing she knows so much about this area and really draws you into the lectures readings etc and makes you care and that makes the assignments a breeze. I would recommend taking her if you are taking any class that she may teach!!
Take her class!! I was always EXCITED to go to this class. It's a lot of reading but it is very much worth it. You'll learn a lot.
Heather is the BEST teacher I've had. She makes class extremely enjoyable to attend, which is rare
Great prof. Really energetic and relaxed, especially if you take a morning class. I would highly recommend her to any anthropology student. She knows what she's talking about and is a great lady. Weekly quizzes--no exams--and a couple easy papers.
She is an amazing teacher who really knows her stuff..I would definatly recommmend this class to anyone who needs anthro 204.. there are no EXAMS or TESTS.. just weekly quizzes over the reading.. so always read!!!
She's a great professor. Has a high interest in anthropology and it shows. Lots of reading to do but it was all very interesting and covers a wide range of issues. If you don't come away from this class with a different view of yourself in relation to the rest of the world, then you weren't paying attention.
Van Wormer is very cool; knows a lot about anthropology and isn't afraid to share it. She's also a little nuts, and funny. The reading gets annoying at times, and the quizzes are hard at points, but her grading on papers is very forgiving. Not a bad prof to have, just be ready to read a bunch of somewhat boring books.
There is a lot of reading for this class and really no way to get by without it. Other than that this class is highly recommended. Heather is a great prof. Very funny and doesn't hold back what is on her mind.
Amazing teacher. I recommend you take one of her classes. Easy if you read stuff, and altogether fun.
This professor is awesome. She is funny and makes the class interesting. There is a lot of reading, but it is pretty interesting. The projects are really fun too.
My favorite professor!
i absolutly loved this prof!! i learned a lot in her class and it wasnt that hard of a class either, you did need to attend every class, though! overall i highly recommend her
Great Prof! Quizes can be difficult so you have to READ! but she makes up for it on her tests. Well balanced class on videos, lectures, notes, and in class activities. Really funny and helpful too!
She is a pretty good professor. She is very nice and her lectures are fairly interesting. Watch a lot of movies in this class. Overall, liked the professor and liked the class.
LOVEEEEE Van Wormer. She's the most helpful prof in the department. Seriously. Her quick wit and quirky sense of humor makes what could easily be dry material rather interesting. If you get the chance, take her. She's brilliant and sure to make you laugh.
No text, but selected readings provided via BB. It was an okay class; I am a critical theorist so there was not much, per se, on crit. theory, but overall Heather is a good teacher, and the material was thought provoking.
Good at discussion, class can be interesting, but bad at everything else. Give up hope on papers, she'll mark you down (incorrectly) for citations and not explicitly rewriting her question. She has a tendency to undermine people's intelligence with snarky comments and then wonder why no one tries to participate. Conveniently didn't hand out evals.
The good thing about her is that she gives excellent lectures and makes everything understandable. The unfortunate thing that overshadows that is that she is not explicit on what she wants from papers. She will grade you harshly and not really tell you why. She also can be super condescending when a student asks a question in class.
Heather is funny and keeps the class interesting. she understands we are college students and acts pretty chill. you have weekly quizzes that are kinda rough, read the reading with a fine tooth comb. also there is 2 exams and one paper. Attend class too and you will be golden. I recommend her highly.
Professor Van Wormer knows the material very well. There is a good variation in the way she teaches and presents the material so it is interesting. You need to be in class and do the readings in order to succeed!! I did the weekly readings and still found the quizzes slightly challenging. Overall, she is a knowledgable and reasonable professor.
I love VanWormer, she's extremely kind and is so passionate about everything she does. She's a great help in office hours and tends to get back to your emails and questions almost immediately. You gotta read the text to pass though.
She is so nice! The class is super easy too, but there's a lot of readings. You can totally skim the readings and do fine on the bb quizzes. Make sure to study the online quizzes for the exam! I would take again and it's an easy class!
Fun class. Going to class is essential. Taking good notes is essential to do well on tests.
Really cool prof!
It's not a difficult class, but I also recorded the lectures to help me. There are reading quizzes every week and only 3 exams. None are cumulative.
Prof Vanwormer is super nice but this class is pretty tough. Her quizzes are almost impossible like everyone says, but if you study her exams are manageable. This class was very interesting and she did some fun activities throughout the semester.
You must attend class. I missed 2 for emergency reasons and lost 20 points. She is unapproachable and rather rude if I'm being honest. I would have loved to expand on ideas in the class one on one but she was very curt. She doesn't offer extra credit. I hope I never have her again.
I LOVED taking this class with her. She is hilarious and helpful. She will give you a quiz on the reading/other materials for that week but if you read well you'll do fine. Also, tests are very straight forward. Make flashcards of the quizzes and you'll be good to go. Very happy with my experience with her.
She is a very good prof! Very funny, easy to talk to, and emails back fast. Sometimes the lectures can get boring, but the content is interesting. Usually watch a few videos every chapter. Quizzes every week which you have to read carefully for, but if you do, they're easy. I recommend her!
I love her so much! Not only was she a great teacher, but she cares about her students so much. She always made us laugh and she is a genuinely amazing person. I would recommend her completely.
Engaging lecturer, easy tests, funny. Enjoyable GenEd credit where you learn something.
Really amazing prof here at GV. Great lectures, go to class though because she doesn't post here notes online (or get a partner and have them send you notes). Tests super easy, lecture always funny. never makes anything confusing. Really really amazing prof.
Professor Van Wormer is a good professor and great person. She's straight forward with what she's looking for however she doesn't get grades in very quickly so you're left wondering what you have in the class while you study for the final. Also didn't really discuss anything interesting or anything you haven't heard 40 million times over
VanWormer was an enthusiastic professor. She is honest and hilarious. You will need the textbook because you have to read a chapter a week and take an online test at the end of the week. Her lectures were very interesting and I enjoyed being in her class. The exams were exactly like the online tests and easy. She made this class a lot more fun.
This is a decent gen ed to take. It's not an easy A, but not impossible to get an A. As long as you as you attend class, take good notes, complete online quizzes, and read the book for exams then it shouldn't be too difficult.
shes an amazing woman and very wonderful at lecture. she does not show grades until they are finalized so thats a bit annoying but she is fun, cares about her job and her students, and is very chill.
I love her! She made anthropology interesting and engaging. This was a class I thought I would not enjoy but I ended up really liking it. Midterm wasn't bad! A good amount of reading then discussion in class but i got used to it and thought it wasn't bad. Take her! No textbooks either which is a plus.
I loved professor Van Wormer! She made our class laugh pretty good on many occasions. She doesn't put grades in until the end, however you do know what you got on assignments, just not in BB. She makes the classes fun and entertaining and kept our attention as much as she could. I would definitely recommend her!
She is a great teacher who is passionate about her topics. However, not great at making both assignments and requirements clear to her students. She also doesn't give feedback until last minute on assignments and doesn't grade anything until the final days so you never know what your grade is. The material isn't hard but the class is disorganized
Van Wormer was not organized and takes about 4 days to respond to emails. She does not give second chances at all. She doesn't teach very much material, she makes you read articles to learn information. She is unorganized and I was not a fan at all. She ruined my love for this topic.
This woman is amazing! Would take her for everything if I could. She really cares about her students and the class was super interesting and easy to pass. Exams and quizzes are open note and never gave something that took a long time. 10/10!!!!!
One of the best professors I've had at GV. So nice and genuinely cares about the well-being of her students. She can be a bit slower to respond to emails, but she will happily answer questions in lectures. Be prepared for reading and lectures. The only downside to this class is everything gets graded last-minute, assignments are reasonable though
Amazing professor. Honestly one of the best professors from my first year at GV. Grades easy, assignments don't take long, cares about her students. Very kind.
I did not enjoy this class as much as I thought I would. I took this for a general education course and her attitude when asking for any clarification or understanding came off as very passive aggressive and she had no willingness for flexibility. For someone with a rigorous major and who took this for a credit, I would not recommend. :/
She is very funny and nice, but when someone asks a question because of unclear instructions, she can be very passive-aggressive. She doesn't answer emails and hasn't been posting materials online when she says. Material isn't hard to understand. She doesn't post lecture slides so if you don't go to class make sure you get the notes from someone.
I have taken a class from this professor every semester I have been able to. There is no limit to what they are able to teach you if you put in the time and effort. No other educator has given me so much to think about or changed my worldview so heavily. Cares about the success of their students. Could not recommend any more highly.
Although her lectures and games were engaging and energetic, she comes across very passive aggressive. She does not put her notes on blackboard. Her expectations for assignments and on exams are unclear. Her emails and answers to questions are often unhelpful if she answers at all. Grades aren't updated until very end of the semester. Good luck!
Although she is passionate, this class was not enjoyable. She was extremely passive-aggressive to students and would shame the class for not getting "good" grades even when she did not provide us with the necessary resources to succeed. She does not put grades in until the very end of the semester, so good luck figuring out your grade! 0/10 class.
Prof was belittling and mean toward entire class. Got upset and passive-aggressive when students didn't comprehend the dense and complex readings, of which there were MANY each day. Never put grades in book. Slow to responding emails and unforgiving if deadline is missed, even for good reason. Unkind. No review guides or essay assignment notice.
Will make the whole class feel bad for doing bad on exams and we will tell her what we need from her to do better but won't do a single one of those things. Will post everything last minute even the study guide, won't know your grade till you finish the class. Good luck!
She is very energetic and passionate about lectures, but lectures are very difficult to follow along with. After the class did terrible on exams, she had asked what she should change to make our grades higher. We answered and she did not use any of our recommendations. Class did not need to be as difficult as it was.
She is constantly passive aggressive, she refuses to post any of her slides or give review days. She tends to berate her students over test scores and doesn't allow students to see/know their grade until the class is over. Additionally, she doesn't allow her students to have the resources to succeed in her course.
She would belittle students for not participating in class and accuse us of not reading. Im not sure if she was just having a bad semester, but this class was more difficult than it needed to be. Be prepared to read a lot every week, then be expected to know every little detail about it for class other wise you are shamed and told you are wrong.
She is mean to students who have questions and will make them feel guilty for asking/not knowing. Her slides are also basically essays. She is inconsistent in grading anything open ended and asks the most minuscule details about things we "went over" in class on exams. The class has few things garded and those aren't put in until after your final.
She's very passionate about her job, but can be passive aggressive. When the class did bad on an exam, she blamed/berated us. Grades aren't posted until during/after finals week. So you won't know your grade until it's to late to do anything about it. Very lecture heavy and refuses to post slides on blackboard. Class was harder than it needed to be
Anything positive you read about her is false, she is undoubtedly the WORST professor I have ever had. Terrible class, terrible professor. Every homework assignment is due at the worst times.
She is very passionate, however even if you read and analyze the 45 long pages of each chapter the quizzes are still hard. They are also due at the worst time. I feel that you are set up to fail the exams because even if you read all the chapters and look at notes you will still fail. This class is made way harder than it should.
She is clearly passionate about the topic and does lots of activities and games to keep it interesting. Reading quizzes are a majority of the grade but they're due at an inconvenient time which is annoying. Only one essay during the semester and the exams are easy. There's an equal amount to hate and like about this professor.
Shes very passionate about what she teaches and in my opinion, has a great personality. I do believe that if you apply yourself in this class, it's more than easy to get a good grade. However, she is nit picky about small things like not reopening assignments and offering no help to bring up low grades. If you fall behind early on then you're done.
She is an okay teacher, she's passionate about her job, but I just don't recommend taking the class. She does not post lectures online and is passive-aggressive at times. You will have to read the textbook to do good on the tests. The quizzes are always due on Monday at noon (weird timing). Overall, you'll warm up to her it's just a boring class.
She's a good professor. She assigns a lot of readings/podcasts so be ready for that. Gives reading quizzes each week that are still difficult even if you do the reading. Exams are extremely difficult, make sure you take good chapter notes. Attendance is weighted weird - just show up. If you take good notes and participate in lectures you'll pass.
Very difficult sometimes weekly quizzes based on specific parts of entire chapters of textbook. I emailed her a few times throughout this course and I either got a late, extremely passive aggressive unhelpful response, or no response at all. Lectures are very note heavy but gives very little to take the notes and doesn't post them online.
Not really a great professor.
She's not very nice. She doesn't give any leniency no matter how much you participate in class. She doesn't like anyone. She's extremely passive-aggressive and rude. She assigns a ton of reading and has quizzes due at noon on Mondays. It's so stupid.
