Her test are open book, and you have to write a research paper in three parts.
Heather is a great teacher who clearly loves teaching.
Heather Wylie is a nice teacher, but she not that easy. She keeps changing her methods of tests. Now this year she has open notes but all is three question with two to three pararagraph essays in her tests. I don't find her very clear in her class and the text book very boring and somewhat at time difficult to interpret.
I have taken Introduction to Soc, Soc of Mass Media and of Minorities. She is the best teacher. Her lectures and assignments were always very clear and organized. I always learned something new idea, perspective, and information for me every lecture. She is very helpful!
I feel Intro. to Sociology could have been called, "How the rich, whites, and men are ruining the lives of Americans." Seemed less a class on how humanity works and more conflict theory applied to contemporary America. In-class discussion was pointless. Subjectivity in grading parts of tests was annoying.Basically killed my interest in Sociology.
Heather is an awesome teacher. People who think her test are hard must be stupid, because they are open note and she is an easy grader. She does, however, give a good amount of homework. I would suggest this class to anystudent.
i had mrs wylie a year ago and she was an amazing teacher, she kept everything interesting and related the class ro current events, however, i was often distracted from the lectures because of her looks...mrs wylie is straight banging son!!! hottest teacher ever, i would recommend her to anyone...shes bomb. thanks mrs wylie!! G.S. 08
Best class i've ever taken at Shasta College. she knows her information, very organized, informative, helpful, and funny. I wanted to go to her class. i am taking another class taught by her just for the heck of it because i loved her class so much. Anyone i talk to who has taken this class loved it. i don't know where all these haters came from.
An amazing teacher that makes learning fun. Test are no suprise and what you are expected to learn is given to you. You has a bright personality and is one of the best teachers you can have.
Great teacher, interesting and really nice. Test are open note and she gives outlines for the essays. minimal home work. lots of extra credit opportunities.
Heather is an amazing teacher. She is very professional and she knows her material. She can be fun, and her tests are easy because you can use notes and some are even take home tests. I'm taking her again. :)
SOC 30 is my favorite class that I have ever taken at SC! Dr. Wylie keeps the class extremely up-to-date and interesting! The exams are easy if you study -- you can bring your notes -- and class discussion is always lively and mind-blowing. Be prepared to have some of your ideas about Gender shattered and enjoy!
Ms. Wylie is really great and is clear in her teaching and her assignments. All tests are open book, so as long as you take notes in class you should do well.
Nice Teacher, easy essay grader, exams are open note but still difficult because of her wording. Lots of work in this 3 unit class, reading, check ins, article evaluation, 4 part essay, film and radio guides. There is some chances for extra credit. Interesting course but the work load is huge.
nice, funny, helpful. her lectures aren't boring, the podcasts and documentaries shown in class are pretty interesting. tests are directly from the text, lectures, and assignments. requires some work but she's a great teacher.
Great teacher. Interesting discussions. She uses a lot of powerpoint so it is easy to fall asleep. She is open to talking one on one to students are cares about everyone's success. She has some humor, which is nice!
Dr. Wylie's the best professor I have had at Shasta College. She keeps the class interesting and up-to-date; the class often discusses current issues in reference to the class subject matter. Reading is copious, but easy. 1 essay required, but she walks you through it in steps. 3 exams, multiple choice, open notes, many extra credit opportunities.
She says that we don't have to show up to class but grades you on participation and surprise check-ins. Anytime I talked to her, even during office hours, she was dismissive and unhelpful.
One of the best professors at Shasta. The workload is a little heavy, but reasonable and spaced out well through the semester. She can be a little dismissive of people who don't put effort in, but that is only because she puts soooo much work into keeping the course relevant and up to date. Tons of chances for extra credit.
I loved the pace of the summer sess class. She makes it very do-able. Great humor, keeps things light. Listens to everyone's perspective. A little too much focus on what is negative about teh U.S....didn't like that, :-( BUT overall, a high recommend! Teaching is her calling.
Dr. Wylie is the best teacher I've ever had in college. She is extremely organized & helpful and makes Sociology extremely interesting! I absolutely LOVE her!
Took her class once, didn't pay enough respect to the subject matter and failed. Re-took it, with a more humble attitude, but she still hated me. I guess I didn't deserve to be on her good side, but when it came down to grading our big project, she was ruthless on me. Either way, I probably deserved it. She was a nice lady for the most part.
I took Professor Wylie's Soc 1 class, and then took her Sociology of Gender class solely because she was teaching it. She's an amazing professor who is extremely intelligent, well organized and interesting. By far the best professor I had at Shasta College.
Things were fine until I had to apply selected Soc concepts to personal data, huh? Isn't that putting us into "boxes"? I did not want to share my personal data w/writing lab. Unhappy w/my grade on that project. Took Soc at a different college, LOVED it. Not so much this time. Tests are hard! She is a neat person though, just don't like her grading.
I?m usually an A student but if it wasn't for her extra-credit opportunities (which adds to the already high workload, esp. if you have a life), I would have received a C-grade, or worse. Tests are hard. Did not care for personal-data project. Supposedly were not graded on personal details, but concepts didn't apply to me. She's nice though.
Start doing all the xtra credit right away. The class project was awful.Moodle grade matrix is a joke she doesn't use it. Every lecture she will say "hold that thought" or "I'll get back to you on that" which she never does. Grades grammar hard on class project but she can't spell or write. Horrible class experience.
Mrs.Wylie is passionate about what she teaches. Class discussions are always relevant to the text. Her power points are long; its easy to doze off. Her tests are hard and unorganized. The positive is she allows any type of notes while testing.
She offers a lot of extra credit & I suggest doing as much as you can! The only material you aren't allowed to use on tests is your book. Tests are a little unorganized. She didn't use the moodle grading matrix until about 3 weeks before the end of the semester. The essay she makes you do is a nightmare!
Amazing wish I could take more of her classes. She tells you up front that her class is university level, because it is. Why take classes that aren't going to challenge you. She is so helpful and her class is always interesting.
You will do a lot of work for this 3 unit class. All her tests are open note, so make sure you take clear notes, all tests are true/false, but they are not easy, you will write one paper in 4 steps, makes the paper easier. Offers tons of extra credit, but you have to make the effort to do it.
great teacher, great topics for in class debates. her lectures were always entertaining and useful.
I really enjoyed Heather's class! It's very discussion oriented and she always talks about current events at the beginning of class, and how they're sociological. So long as you show up and take good notes, the tests should be a breeze. Also, the textbook is online and FREE! Loved it!
Great Teacher for Soc 1 and Sociology 25. Very interesting lectures with up to date topics. Wylie is very down to earth! She provides a free online textbook. Do all the readings and the class will be a BREEZE!! my favorite professor at Shasta College!!!!
I took her Intro to Sociology and Sociology of the Minorities class. I feel as though she makes the class engaging. She also had very interesting discussion topics.
She is a very good teacher. she is straight forward and you know what you have to do to get an A. I think technology just isn't her suit. She uses Moodle 2 and there were many issues with grading.
Really manageable course requirements. Mixed up lectures w/videos and pod casts. She has a way laid back style. Super cool lady. Loved the class!
She is all over the place with what you have to do some online some in the textbook some on podcasts, blogs and random articles. Her curriculum is confusing and hard to follow. Her tests are tricky. Talking to her one on one she makes you feel like youre wasting her time. Thank God for all the extra credit!
Very engaging teacher having a lot of in class discussion very interesting topics lot of extra credit but as long as your read the text and take good notes the class should be an interesting breeze
This class was really boring and she gives you a major workload including a 4 step essay that is a nightmare her tests are manipulative and shes a brutal grader take a different class or teacher!
This class was really boring and she gives you a major workload including a 4 step essay is torture her tests are manipulative and shes a brutal grader take a different class or teacher!
If you like boring long lectures and lots of homework, this is the professor for you. Late work is not accepted, so good luck if your sick. No exceptions! Internet is a must. No computer, no internet, better take a hike. Everything is online. Homework, worksheets, etc. I will avoid to have her as my professor for the remainder of my time at Shasta.
She made learning History fun.
Each assignment requires you to look at 3 to 4 articles or videos and has many parts to the assignments. Big work load
Heather is a great teacher, and always willing to help. She gives a ton of extra credit, but also likes to assign a lot of reading. She provides the text book online & uses moodle, so you get to save money there. She is really funny, and all of her students love her. As long as you do the assignments and keep up on the reading you'll pass just fine
Attempted and fell behind and took an F. Took next semester and pulled an A. More work then all my other classes together. She makes you earn your grade. Tests are online at home, open notes and open book, which is free online. She gives a ton of extra credit. Interesting lectures, loves people who participate, which is part of grade. She's great.
Heather is both an amazing teacher and person, she connects with/cares about her students and is passionate about her class. You'll have a good amount of reading and she grades thoroughly so many people are discouraged from the class, but if you put in the effort it definitely pays off!! She's my favorite teacher at the college.
Heather is probably one of the best, if not the best, teachers at Shasta College. Her lectures are engaging and interesting, unless you just don't like sociology and in that case why take the class? She's incredibly thoughtful and kind. Don't hesitate to ask for help. She genuinely cares about her students and wants to make the world a better place
The tests were fairly easy as long as you go to every class, participate, and keep up on the reading. The lectures are excellent and engaging. The hardest element of the class is the writing assignments- a 2-3 page paper was due every 2-3 weeks of the semester and these papers were graded pretty harshly for content. Lots of reading required.
She's super nice and funny and completely understanding of any kind of situation. All the assignments are clear and she doesn't take attendance so if you want to skip a day she won't care. Although don't take that too literally because I barely showed up the entire semester and got a D because I missed all the assignments she assigned in class.
Always touching on up to date topics. Very real, and super funny. She does lecture a lot but pay attention because there is lecture info included on the tests. I love a teacher that has a sense of humor. She cracked me up daily. I got a lot out of her class. Oh, and FULL respect that she chooses to teach with a FREE book! She really does care!
Very nice and caring teacher. She offers a ton of volunteer and extra credit opportunities. She is a tough grader towards the reflection essays. You will pass if you take the time to do each assignment.
She's a great teacher, but definitely pushes her agenda and not very tolerant of other's ideas or beliefs. We played a game where she said stats and asked questions and we had to take a step forward, and I was at the front and she embarrassed me and made me an example in front of the rest of class.
I have never found lectures to be interesting until I got into Ms. Wylie's class. She makes them somewhat interactive by including examples such as video clips or podcasts. You can tell that she really cares about what she's teaching. Definitely one of my favorite teachers of all time. As long as you take notes and/or pay attention, tests are easy.
What should I say? Ms. Wylie is brilliant! She is one of those teachers who can change your world view. She really cares about her students and their academic performance. If you never taken her class, sign it up!
Mrs. Wylie's lecture is one of the most engaging classes I have ever taken. She uses a variety of platforms and it is nice how some of it is online and some in class. The assignments aren't particularly hard you just have to actually do them. She integrates a lot of ted talks and articles into class. Lots of extra credit opportunities too.
Heather Wylie is one of the most inspirational teachers I've ever had. She is passionate and really breaks down subject matter so everyone can understand. She takes the time to make the class interesting and she even makes sure that the textbook doesn't cost anyone anything. She includes relevant subject matter in the lectures. Phenomenal class!
A really caring and passionate instructor that doesn't make you feel like you're going through college on your own.
PARTICIPATION IS REALLY VITAL IN THIS CLASS, IF SHE SEES THAT YOU ARE PUTTING IN THE EFFORT SHE WILL HELP YOU DO YOUR BEST AND PASS THE CLASS. SHE IS VERY RELATABLE, AND GIVES TONS OF EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES, MAKING IT VERY HARD TO FAIL HER CLASS.
Life changing course
She gives a free textbook. Lots of extra credit options. Just read the material and you'll pass. Replies to emails and checks in. Really great teacher. Would highly recommend her! Best teacher I've had in awhile!
Heather is so adorable and passionate! She loves what she does and will make you love it too. Her lectures vary because they discuss topics applicable to whatever may be happening in the real world, but they are always incredible and give you lots to think about. Rigorous work, but she makes her grading criteria very clear and is always available.
Amazing teacher. Really understanding and tries to work with you. Gives lots of extra credit. no pop quizzes or exams she does make you do a lot of essays but she gives you a detailed outline of exactly what she wants to see in your papers and you can't fail if you follow it. Great teacher!
Her online class is poorly structured. Weekly assignments, 3-4 + extra credit assignments. You'll go into an assignment to read numerous articles, text book (which is online for free, only good part about this class), has you watch 20min-1 hour long videos, and listen to hour long podcasts before writing. Ridiculously unorganized and maze like.
Fun spirited, but sooo much homework
She was a good teacher & I learned quite a bit in her class. But this class was more Consuming than my other classes combined. Shes not super consistent in grading & doesnt like opinions that differ from a liberal view, so dont argue, write what you think she wants to hear. Lots of assignments that include quite a bit of time, but lots xtra cred
Very passionate, and easy to work with. You have to pay attention and read the material otherwise you'll get lost but that's just part of studying sociology. She is honestly one of the best professors I've ever had, and is always willing to talk. Get used to hearing the phrase "study's show" you will hear it a lot.
The best teacher ever. She's wonderful and wants to see her students pass.
No tests! Interesting topics! Has reflections due each week usually only about 4 paragraphs but they are very easy! Sometimes not even that!
Professor Wylie is so intelligent and open-minded! All topics covered in her class were so interesting. She is very organized, in person and online. Very adamant on ensuring students to reach out and communicate with her about anything. Lots of reflection assignments (mainly writing assignments) and lots of extra credit opportunities. She is great!
I don't even know what to say about Heather, this is my third class with her and I just love learning about sociology. It's really opened up my eyes to realize that things aren't as simple as they appear. Heather guides us through a way of looking at issues with a broad perspective and is really caring and accommodating. I'll miss her classes.
Hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. Highly recommended, she is really personable, down-to-earth, genuine and truly loves her job as well as her students. The material is relevant, poignant, she's truly a gem!
Hands down one of the best classes I've taken at Shasta College. The content is incredible, there are SO many opportunities for extra credit, and the teacher really cares both about the content and her students. Get ready to hustle, but you'll be glad you did!
Professor Wylie is the most open-minded and respectful professor I have ever encountered. I have taken two courses with her now and I have realized that it is quite easy to get an A in her class if you do your assignments. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities as well so take advantage! I've learned so much from her. Highly recommend!
Professor Wylie is a caring professor. She will touch on subjects that are hard for some. But through educating us on these hard to discuss topics, we have learned so much as a class. I hope that anyone who has a chance to take a class with her will decide to. She truly is a great individual and a great educator.
Heather truly cares about the success of her students and is there every step of the way. No tests or exams, just project-based work with some reading. Some of the homework is based on lectures, but you can usually get away with just doing the reading online - no need to show up to class unless there's a film or an in-class assignment.
She is great! The homework is not too difficult as long as you buckle down and do it. LOTS of chances for extra credit. She really appreciates effort and wants her students to succeed and get a hold of her if needed. I wish there were more teachers like her that cared that much. Highly recommend her for sociology.
Her class is the best online classes I have ever had. Learned so many great things that are applicable to daily life and will help me be a great physical therapist a business man. There is a decent amount of reading and writing but she gives you all the resources you need to read and pretty simple to write about It. Quizzes are really easy as well.
Heather is so sweet and wants us all to pass. She offers so much extra credit so getting an A should be easy. She is super understanding and she is huge on communication. Best professor ever.
Heather was awesome for intro to sociology! Her grading criteria is clear and she cares a lot about her students' success. She also is very understanding that people have schedules outside of school. The in-class lectures cover some heavy topics but is very interesting nonetheless, and the homework load is not bad at all. Really enjoyed this class!
Saying she is an ANGEL is a understatement. Very easy going, lots of extra credit, and very clear assignments. She doesn't over do it on the assignments either, she is available any time you need her, and responds very fast. I would highly recommend.
Caring and understandable Professor, she is always there ready to help you, easy to follow instructions for homework. Very inspirational class. Really good feedback. The material will press your buttons though, so be ready, that's what I loved the most. Easy class if you do your home work, a lot of extra credit. This class will open your mind.
Dr. Wylie taught the best online course I have taken to date. I highly recommend her! She was accessible, caring, flexible, and helped our class connect the curriculum to applications in the real world. I especially appreciated her moderation of online student discussions and the various mediums that she encouraged for demonstrating knowledge.
Extremely helpful and never dismisses any concerns of her students. Appreciates feedback and wants you to learn. Take this professor for any sociology class!
Heather is the best! The best teacher I have had at Shasta College. It is obvious that she spends a lot of time preparing for her class and her passion for Sociology shows in each discussion and assignment. She offers lots of extra credit opportunities, gives good feedback, and has a clear grading criteria outlined for every assignment.
Dr. Heather Wylie is a good professor. In the online format, she is very engaging. Her material are interesting, and her assignments are not hard. You can complete the whole weeks assignment in a day. Grading is very lenient and she offers so much extra credit that it's almost impossible to fail. Highly recommend.
Heavy work load, (I took the condensed class) lots of reading, lots of extra credit. I loved this class I learned a lot about what is happening in the world and how to view things differently.
Heather is super understanding especially during the pandemic. She is an incredible professor I highly recommend you take her class. She is super fun and informal but also takes important issues seriously. There was a lot of work at times but it wasnt super hard, no lectures except two required zoom meetings the whole semester, no tests.
I would 100% recommend taking Heather's class. It is the most together and coherent online class I have ever taken, and it just makes sense. Heather puts in as much work as we do, which is hard to come by during the pandemic. Online classes can be difficult, but this is set up for you to succeed. Heather is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Easily one of my favorite teachers at Shasta College. I took this class Spring 2021, all online, and this class was amazing. It was incredibly well organized and Proffessor Wylie is incredibly helpful with any issues you have; all in all it was one of the best classes I've ever taken and I'd recommend it to anyone. You DEFINITELY won't regret it!
Mrs. Wylie is a fantastic professor and everyone should take a class that she teaches. She is very understanding and promotes a safe and welcoming environment in her classes!
This has been my favorite professor I've had in college. She is absolutely amazing, and cares a lot about her student's success. She made an eight week class feel like a breeze, I wish that she could teach all of my classes. If you have a question she is super quick to answer, and totally will to work with you on anything. Tons of extra credit too.
Heather was such an amazing teacher! She wants to ensure you understand the material being taught in class, and is accessible outside of class for any questions you may have. The class I took was condensed so there was a lot of work, but it was still really easy to pass. She's super caring and treats her students as people, and she's there for them
I loved Mrs. Wylie. I took her online course and it is a lot of reading but it is easy to understand and interesting. She cares about her students and always answered my questions nicely and in a timely manner. One of the best teachers I have had.
She was great at making a safe environment and made this class really interesting
Heather Wylie is a fantastic instructor. I have taken two classes with her now, and one of my biggest regrets is not being able to take another one. She approaches difficult topics in a way that makes it easy to understand, no matter your previous knowledge of the subject. No exams but lots of smaller assignments.
She was hte most understanding professor ever. I missed 30% of the classes and didn't do half of my work but I ended up doing them all at the end because she was kind enough to open the assignments for everyone. I learned a lot regardless of the amount of time I was in her class. I was going through a lot and she understood that. Amazing professor.
Heather was my favorite instructor so far. She makes you want to learn and stay in engage because she makes class fun and interesting. She is also kind and funny. She lives her career and it shows through her teachings.
Professor Wylie is awesome, she goes out of her way to let you know when you do good. The expectations are clear and the content is interesting, it is set up without too many tests which is amazing. Nothing overly complicated but very informative. Extra credit available every week.
Glad I took this class, great professor the workload was meaningful but not heavy.
One of the best and most amazing professors I have taken a course with. Professor Wiley is caring and gives each one of her students grace when needed. Assignments were engaging and fun and you made a connection to yourself or the real world. 100% would take again!
Professor Wylie makes the class engaging and fun. While the workload can be heavy, especially in the condensed format, she is understanding and provides plenty of extra credit opportunities. Unstuck AI was a great supplemental tool for preparing for exams.
Ms. Wylie is an outstanding teacher who demonstrates both excellence in instruction and genuine compassion for her students. She is incredibly understanding when life circumstances arise and always willing to work with you to ensure your success. Don't hesitate to reach out—she will do her best to support you in any way she can.
I'm a SJSU student and I needed an ethnic studies class. I found this online class through the California Community college online network. Professor Wylie is a great instructor. She is very caring and loves to learn from her students for her personal and professional growth.
Easiest class I've ever taken. She gave a 5 day grace period on top of a week over due date. Shes super sweet and constantly reached out to me to see if I needed help.
She is easily one of the best teachers I've had. Offered 1-3 points of extra credit a week, one of which is always a simple minute survey. All of the work is broken into small assignments throughout the module, such as a chat, reflection, participation, and occasionally video quizzes! I ended with over 110% in the class on top of a busy schedule.
Heather is one of the most down-to-earth people I have met. I went into this semester without a major and came out as a Soc major. Very easy class and learned a lot. Gives out a bunch of resources which are super helpful. She is super easy to reach out to, and her late work policy really helps you stay afloat. I highly recommend her!
