He is a really fun guy, but he doesnt do a good job teaching. When you ask him a question, he never fully answers them. His test are really hard and there is no curve. You have to do your homework to understand whats going on in class. There is alot of memorization invovled. da.. its chemistry
He is a really good guy. It is his first time teaching so he is open to tons of questions and tons of examples. The person that commented before me is stupid. He doesn't curve the test or the class but he does offer tons of extra credit and second chances on your bad grades. He hates the idea of failing the class. I got an A and it was pretty easy.
This teacher is new at teaching and is quite inexperienced. He does a decent job of teaching, but he is not very helpful outside of his lectures. I find him very condescending towards students and somewhat disrespectful in class. I don't know what he learned from attending school back in Mexico, but he seems to try and fail half the class.
Congrats on the kid that got an A in his class becuase you were one of 5 in all of his classes for that semester. So besides the gifted or antisocial the rest of us have to deal with reality. Reality is that his tests are ridiculous. The class averages were around 47% for each one with no curve. The teacher is nice but the class is really hard.
So he is a very nice guy but as he will tell you, he's heartless. Test averages are around forty and there is no way to prepare and he will not help you. Its luck. the ACS final is much easier than his tests
Bother Becerril is a great professor. He loves Chemistry and wants to see the students succeed. It's not a knitting class, it is a difficult course. He is always willing to listen to your questions and concerns and help you. Just work hard and follow his guidelines and you'll be fine.
He is a genious and expects everyone else to be geniouses too. I was in his beginner class and failed every test! I went to the TA twice a week and still failed. He would not post powerpoints. I would go to him; he would tell me sorry but there was nothing he could do. Average tests were about 60% and A LOT of homework. But, labs were fun.
GREAT guy! He really wants you to succeed! Yes it takes quite a bit of work in this class, but its COLLEGE!!! Labs were fairly simple and he would answer any question you had when you went and talked with him. There were test curves which were quite helpful! Study the notes, do the homework and dont be afraid to talk to him. GREAT class and teacher
Extremely difficult class. Not much help from the professor. If you work your butt off, you'll get a C. The tutor helps a little but not enough. NOT recommended if you are going to med school/grad school
Great teacher. Very passionate about what he teaches. and expects a lot out of your brain. Tests and quizzes are very hard, but the labs are way fun but watch out they correlate with the homework and tests and quizzs.
Super awesome teacher and really hilarious. Very nice guy and wants everyone to do well. It's a lot of hard work but totally pays off if you do it. Tests and quizzes are hard. I suggest using a tutor no matter how well you think you'll do.
Brother B. is a super funny guy, he wants everyone to pass the class. Chemistry is a hard subjects and he expects a lot.(4 hours a night)
His tests are pretty hard, but he curves them so you end up doing pretty well. He tries to explain things if you ask him a question, but most of the time he doesn't answer it well. There is also a lot of work to do for homework, but he doesn't really check it. He means well and I really like him as a person. His "cat" questions on exams were great!
Dr. Becerril is hard. There is not way around it. However, he is knowledgeable and has a lot of experience in the field. His tests are difficult and he expects you to devote a lot of 12+ hours a week outside of class. He is a nice guy and very funny. He makes class enjoyable so it's really up to you to be prepared. It's the only way to succeed.
It was definitely hard but helpful class, his quizzes and tests are hard, that means he expects you to study. you will never get a good grade if you just scratch the surface. but at the same time, he gives tons of extra credits and he will do everything so that you don't give it up. If you want to stretch yourself, definitley take this class.
My favorite teacher so far at BYU-I. I've never had such an intelligent professor, and his passion was evident every day. He cares about students and about being the best teacher he can be. I had never taken even high school chemistry, so I was nervous, but because I made this class my first priority and studied a lot, I got an A. Take his class!
He had a good sense of humor in making the concepts comparable to real life examples. He was very good at making me want to try harder and do better when I went in to talk to him about any test scores.
I have been impressed every day by the Brother Beceril's example of a true academic, and by his constant desire for knowledge and truth. He has good command of the classroom and the respect of most, if not every, student. There was a lot of work to be done for this course, but it was always made very clear what we were to do,.
He does cover the material quite well, however once we are tested or quizzed on that material it is much harder, where we are merely taught the basics.
The outline and schedule that the professor gave was very clear and helpful. keep locking the door. sets a tone for the class.
Brother B is very organized. That is a plus. I liked that I had to work hard in this class in order to get a good grade. It made me feel like I was earning the grade that I got. I liked doing the research summaries and I felt that they helped me to learn.
I liked how Bro. Becerril was very organized with the class, the slides for us to print off so we can pay attention and learn more while in class. I also liked how he gave us a whole outline of the semester with our homework and things that we need to study. He also motivated us to work hard and harder.
Dr. Becerril is a pretty amazing teacher. He is very knowledgeable and knows chemistry like the back of his hand. This is the reason he expects so much. He asks for a lot of time in this class and says that the average student who studies 12 hours a week can expect a C in the class. Great teacher but I felt there was just not enough time.
Bro. B is wonderful as a person. He is very entertaining. I do feel that he will help you if you go to his office. He will give you homework and quizes. By doing the quizes and homework helps you practice very little. His tests are crazy hard! He words his questions completely different than his quizes. His tests are nothing like his quizes.
Brother B. is a very good teacher although his teaching styles are a little different and take some getting used to . Coming prepared to class with questions about the material you did not understand is very helpful
Bro. Becerril is and amazing teacher. He has a passion for chemistry and helps to pass it on to his students. Be prepared to learn and work because he does require a lot form you. If you want to get an easy A then this isnt the class for you but if you want to know Chemistry take him.
Bro. Becerril is a passionate and wonderful teacher! The class is very difficult, and requires a lot of time, but chemistry is no easy subject. If you want to actually learn chemistry and not just get a grade, take this class. He cares about his students, and is willing to help. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
If you can learn from reading a book, take this class! He makes you read 15-30 pages from the textbook and then quizzes you on them the next day. After the quiz he teaches you all the material. I didn't like this. I can't learn from reading a book. If you are a hands on learner I recommend not taking him.
This class was challenging, but very rewarding, and The professor is a great teacher and a great help.
Any chem class is hard, and there is a lot of reading. But, he is teaching a new "style" with is all real-world application of the concepts you learn. The fun of learning how in the world you actually apply chemistry was fascinating. I failed someone elses class (hated chem), and I took him the second round. Loved it and he saved my goose.
Brother B. is a great teacher. This subject is really hard. The text book we use is focused on real world application and Bro. B. explains a lot of cool things like how soap really works using what we learn. Reading quizzes are hard. If you start super serious about in class listening and reviewing you will do fine. Hit the ground running is all.
I will sum up his class by saying that out of 55 students, the average grade of the 4 tests we took was a 59%. That is out of everyone! I worked countless hours and over studied because he gives no study guides, and to preparation to his quizzes or tests. He moved so fast in his teaching it's had to retain information.
The material is so hard, but it's because his students usually do better on the national chemistry exam at the end of the semester. Probably the best professor I've taken in terms of class structurehow organized everything is and how much he is there to help you. I did have to use a tutor.. it helped me so much!
Brother B is freaking amazing! But this class was super hard. 3 professors use this new text book that takes everything to a new level. I would get lost during lectures, moved super fast. He requires 2-3 hours of study a day for a 4 credit class. Tests are write in and super hard. He is helpful though and will take time to help you.
Brother B is a great teacher, very helpful if you need help or want to go over a test he will work with your schedule, and gives good feedback on how to study. Getting an A is possible, but he makes you work for it. The subject is difficult tutoring labs are a must need, and group work is needed, the people you sit with is also your lab group.
Brother B is awesome. His classes are tough but if you work, you will get an A. One of the most clear professors I've ever had. He will always be there if you need extra help. I strongly recommend him. I hate chemistry and he made me love it.
Bro Becerril is hilarious, I felt like the way he taught was in a way that made it easier to understand. He uses cat analogies a lot, so don't take him if you're worried about jokes of blowing up cats. There is also numerous opportunities to get some extra credit if you put in the time. Chem 105 is one of the hardest introductory classes, so study.
Brother B, is a great teacher. I would not take this class from anyone else. most of your homework comes from class prep videos. There is a lot of group work in class. At the end each unit there is a group pretest. He is very funny in the way he teaches. Likes to use cats as examples of breaking down chemical reactions.
Love this guy to death. So funny; cat jokes to aid in his teaching every day. Enforces strict dress code. Go to tutoring three times a week and you'll be fine. Brother B is helpful and even replaces your lowest test score if you do well on the final. Tests are TIMED. I only finished 60% of the final which killed my grade. Learn to work quickly.
Brother B teaches through super long videos which can be hard to understand if you don't have that learning style. He also doesn't explain things in class very well since it's suppose to be our time to 'practice', so you have to be willing to take the extra time to learn it yourself. He doesn't curve any grades, but the tests are not difficult.
What a lot of people at BYU-Idaho don't understand, and on these comments is that Chem 105 is one of the hardest courses here. Reason? Standardized test. This teacher did a lot to make it so you can succeed. He is the best chem 105 teacher. He is hilarious with his analogies. He deserves a lot of respect. He is legit. Want to pass chem 105?Take him
Brother B is a great guy. He is a really good and funny teacher. ---BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE--- that he takes 2% off your overall grade if you dont shave or dont show up. I didn't realize that he is very serious about this and so I got 10% off my grade before I figured out what he did and there is nothing I can do about it :(
Brother Becceril is an amazing teacher! He helps you understand things in a way that makes chemistry make a little more sense. The class in and of itself is fairly difficult but he was such a great teacher and so ready to help students any way he can.
Brother B is awesome. He tries his hardest to make confusing and hard topics fun to learn. That said, the material itself is hard. Put in the work to keep up and you are fine. I did homework with another guy in class almost every night of the week for 2 hours... found it rather manageable to get an A.
Brother B is an amazing teacher. Very funny. We still don't know if he hates cats, but he certainly has no problems dissolving them in acid. For 105 you will have about an hour every class period of video to watch, that is completion based. Tests are tough, but there is enough easy stuff in the grade book to offset it. Do the extra credit too!
Brother Becerril was one of the Professors I have had a byui, he is very clear on how to succeed and is ready to help you in anyway. He makes chemistry a lot of fun, even tempted me to change my major, but to be honest, you are making a big mistake if you don't take Brother Becerril. I've never had a professor so invested in my success!
Bro B. is the best teacher I have had here at BYUI. He really cares about the students, chemistry, and the gospel. He does require a lot of effort but it is all worth-while and not just busy-work. I have tutored many chem students and the students of Bro B always have a significantly more clear understanding of the subject.
Brother B is the man! He cares about his students and genuinely wants them to succeed in the class. He is accessible outside of class and is always willing to help. He provides multiple extra credit opportunities starting at the beginning of the semester so do them if you want an A. General Chem is difficult, but he makes it enjoyable.
Brother B is a fantastic teacher. It's a hard course, and he does a lot to help you do well despite its difficulty. He has a signup sheet to meet with him one on one in his office for a whole hour. It's kind of him to make himself so accessible. He's very good at explaining difficult and abstract concepts clearly using analogies. 10/10
Worst chemistry teacher I have had yet! You are expected to watch hour long videos before class, come to class and do group work, then homework, and tests. He does not teach in class or work through problems. He will only put the answers on the board and move on. This class is great if you can teach yourself, but I wouldn't recommend Becerill.
Brother B is awesome! He is very willing to help students who are struggling with hard concepts. Chem 105 is a weed out class so put forth the effort because by the end of the semester there are at least 10 students that end up dropping. He doesn't ever curve tests so study for them. Go to the tutor for help on sapling homework!
He teaches well and helps you understand it. Chemistry 105 is definitely not an easy class. The only thing I did not like about Brother B, was when people would ask questions he would sometimes just look at them like they were dumb. He did that to me a couple times and it made me feel awkward haha. But he is understanding and will help when you ask
Lab was fun! Brother B made it interesting and fun. Make sure you take this class seriously, it is not your classic lab class.
Chem 105 is hard, but Brother B makes it better! You watch a video before class and then he talks about it in class. He uses cats to explain things understandably and hilariously. Try not to miss class! You can sign up to see him outside of class for help. He definitely cares about his students. There are only 5 tests, not curved, plus ACS final.
Really cares about his students! Chem 105 can be challenging, but is totally passable. He replaces your previous test if you do well! Also, come prepared for group quizzes at the beginning of class. They do have some bearing on your grade.
This class required quite a bit of effort due to the teacher caring more about his CHEM105 students. Also, the readings, lectures, and tests were all based on different materials. It is worth it to just wait a year and take it from Dr. Dabell, especially since he has an open door policy for his physical chemistry students (Dr. Becerril does not).
Brother B is awesome!! He really cares and makes plenty of time for you outside of class. With Covid 19 his class was switched to online learning and he had THE BEST set up of all my professors. His class was well organized and easy to know what is due. CHEM 105 is a weed-out class, meaning it will be hard. Study hard and you'll do fine.
Great teacher! If you put the time in he is willing to help. Chem 105 is a tough class, but he offers a lot of help to get you through. He cares a lot about his students and he makes you feel important in class. Love that he applies the gospel in his teachings and he invites the spirit to his classes. Would definitely recommend!!
Seriously one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I heard a rumor that chem 105 is the most failed class at BYU-I. Started the semester w/ 25 students. Ended with 13. However, if you're going to take this, take it with Bro B!! He was SO helpful and put in a lot of time to help outside of class. Put in effort and you'll do fine.
Bro B is AWESOME!!! Don't hesitate, just take his class! You will learn so much chemistry you'll never look at the world around you the same again!
This class kicked my butt. But Brother B was a good teacher. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Chances are, most people are thinking the same thing as you. His tests are worth most of your grade. At LEAST 2 hours a day outside of class spent studying and doing homework. Don't take this class unless you can put in the hours.
What I loved is that the class felt small and we had a good group of students who participated and made comments. COME TO CLASS PREPARED for sure. You will learn more this way and do well on exams. Bro B is funny and I liked him. You are definitely responsible for your own learning though, so work hard and contribute.
BYUI is so fortunate to have Brother B. He has a post-doctorate from Stanford and could have taught anywhere, but he came here. Felt grateful to have him as a teacher. You'll have to work hard in his class for sure. But it's worth it because you'll really learn to love chemistry! (Or maybe hate it, but you'll definitely recognize it in your life!)
Never taken chemistry before this class. It was crazy hard but learned more than other classes. Fantastic teacher! Would recommend. Brother B is always willing to explain things that you don't understand. Loved his analogies! Don't take a full load of classes though if chemistry is something you struggle with. (Not if you want an A at least ;))
Brother B was awesome!! No need to scroll through comments. Trust me, just sign up for his class!! You wont regret it!
Brother B made class sooo much more fun than any other chemistry class I've taken in the past. He likes to use cats in his example problems which adds a light humor element to class. He helped me a lot when I didn't understand where I was going wrong. Take chem 105 from him and you will not regret it in the slightest!
The course itself is very hard. No matter which teacher you have, you'll have to put in effort. Not an "easy A" kind of class. But I learned more from Brother B than most classes I've ever taken. So willing to help and wants you to be successful. Don't expect others to earn your grade for you. This class is all about you and the effort you put in.
Crazy semester with COVID! I thought he did a good job at keeping the course organized and it was easy to understand when things were due. His jokes are funny and I enjoyed the course. Make sure to watch the lectures before class. He already expects you to know some of the material before he teaches it. I thought this was a great way to learn.
Two thumbs up!
REAL GEM. Took him last year and the way he taught helped me in my upper chem courses.
Not too bad. Good teacher. Hard class.
Great guy! Word of advice: SIGN UP FOR A TUTOR on day 1. Seriously, this has helped me SO much! Then you can come to class prepared and understand the material. Love Brother B! Hard class though.
I love Brother B! The course is hard, but Brother B tries his best to get all of his students to understand. One thing he likes is group work. His lectures are the best, and really important, so don't skip class! They are really important. And the things he puts in the slides WILL be on the exams.
Chemistry is a very difficult class, especially to take over zoom, but Brother B. makes it much more enjoyable. His lectures can be confusing at times, but he is very accessible outside of class to answer questions, and you can tell he cares about the progression of each of his students. He is very funny and a great professor!
He makes you work hard, but I've learned more in this class than most. GREAT teacher.
Brother B is probably the nicest professor I have met. ALL REVIEWS ABOVE, however, are missing a very CRUCIAL point. Being a nice guy doesn't constitute to one being a great professor. EX) He is test heavy: tests including the final count for 60% of the whole grade. He teaches what to do but not how to do it. Save the pain and find somebody else.
I love Brother B! He is caring, clear and a great professor. I have no background whatsoever in Chemistry and he taught clearly enough for me to understand and succeed. Brother B will also replace Exam scores if you get a better grade on subsequent exams. Like everyone has said, this class is a lot of work, but it IS POSSIBLE to get an A!
Bro B. is hands-down the best professor I've ever had! He made a huge impact in my life! Make no mistake, you're going to have to work HARD, especially if you're like me and had no chem background, but you will gain so much more than just chem mastery and you'll be well prepared for future chem classes. Worth the work! Take this class from him!!!
Most reviews on this site are valid, but I cant believe this professor gets a 3.9. I took college physics the same semester and passed with an A, but got a B- in this class. He expects more than other chem105 teachers. His tests are beasts and the class average is always below 50%. Tests are weighted heavy. Like the guy, but not a good teacher.
Brother B was a great teacher and he makes it possible to get an A. Work with him and go over your tests and he may give you points back!
Brother B. is great! However, this class is a very difficult class, no matter the professor you take it from. Tests are a majority of your grade, and there is A LOT of material. I learned a lot and am very happy with my grade, but it took a lot of effort and time commitment.
I was nervous about taking my first chem class but Brother B made it a really good experience. He's very soft-spoken but also knowledgeable and motivating. He lets you replace your old test score with the new one if you did better on it. Whenever I went to office hours, he always gave me back points on the exam we were reviewing. Take him for sure.
His class is structured in a way that you will succeed by studying the material BEFORE class begins. TRUST ME, this is the best way to pass his class! Sign up for a tutor and take a look at the material before the lecture begins. That way you can follow along in class. Great teacher who is willing to work with students.
If youre taking Chem105 TAKE BROTHER B!!! Definitely the hardest class Ive ever taken, but he gives you so many opportunities to better your grade. The tests arent weighted too heavily as long as you keep up on your homework and in class quizzes. He gives you extra credit and changes your lowest test grades! He truly cares about his students!!!!
One of the best professors I've ever had! His dry sense of humor makes class fun. He has you watch a prep video before class and they are really helpful. Everything you need to know will be in them and his lectures are great to help solidify things. All his tests are cumulative, so if you do better on one, he bumps up all of your previous scores!
There's not enough good I can say about Doctor B. Chemistry is very hard for me and my least favorite subject, but this was easily one of my favorite classes I've ever taken in college. I first took this class online bc of COVID and I ended up failing. Taking it from Doctor B was a night and day difference. Put in the work and you can succeed!
I did not like that most classes are of him setting timers and having the class do worksheets. He goes over the answers after but honestly, he could've just uploaded the answers on Canvas and actually just focus on teaching/lecture. Lectures sparingly. Team scores affect grades so group only with people that are likeable. I wouldnt take him again.
People here say that Dr. B is a brutal teacher, but I can for sure say that he is the best professor I have ever had. I currently have a C+ in his class, but that is on me (so I'll retake it w/ him). His lectures are straightforward and understandable. If you have questions, never be afraid to ask him, he will answer. His main goal is to teach you.
I really liked his lectures, he makes them simple and entertaining and helps you understand the material. Class goes really well when students ask questions, and he'll help you outside of class time if you need it.
Dr. B is a very funny guy. Class is very lecture intensive and some might have trouble paying attention. Class is extremely easy to receive an A, it just takes a decent amount of effort. Class load is about 6 hours a week.
One of my favorite professors so far. The class itself was extremely difficult for me, but it's my own fault I got a crap grade. Doctor B. genuinely wants you to succeed, and he doesn't rip into you if you fail anything. A little rough on the out-of-class communications, but eh. Side note; he has a very nice speaking voice and friendly personality.
Great Professor to teach you about cats and almost make a few chem topics make sense. But if you like Testing center tests and not failing a class when life happens then I would recomend someone like Shayne.... Hector makes rude comments, will call legitimit reasons excuses. And treats phyicall limitations as a joke.
Dr. B was not my favorite. He requires you to copy down all of the notes from his lecture and submit a picture of them at the end of the week for a grade. He's not the best at explaining things, and when people ask for clarification, he says the same thing instead of explaining it a different way. Not very understanding and makes rude comments.
Dr. B is a awesome teacher and works at making sure every student understands the material. Is always open to helping students further outside of class
I've always struggled a lot with chemistry, but the way Brother B taught helped understand much more clearly. His class is great, he's funny and he explains things in a way that's easy to understand. He gives you a lot of time for homework and multiple attempts on tests too!
Dr B is the best professor I've had for chemistry. He is literally a chemistry genius and will answer any of your questions. The way his class set up is very easy to get an A, and he has a signup sheet to meet with him outside of class. Don't be afraid to do it, he will help you so much.
I got an 80 on his first test and he said that if you got less than a 90 to think that you failed. This is a load of crap, 80 means that I mostly understood the material, failing means that you didn't understand the material, for someone who already struggles with perfection and failure, this actively harmed the rest of my experience in his class.
Dr. B has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, it works well. The lectures are helpful, and he's willing to answer questions. Using resources like unstuck ai and the textbook can really aid in preparation.
Dr B was my favorite professor my first semester. He is super kind and funny. He used cats to introduce new topics and wove them into an intricate story throughout the semester. He is interested in you and learns his student's names quickly. I can't recommend him as a teacher enough!
Dr. B cares about students even outside of chemistry. It's a really hard class but possible. He wants students to succeed. Talk to him, sign up for consistent tutoring & go to drop in lab for ALEKS and study. There's 10 prep assignments, 20 attempts for e/ of the 4 online tests and then there's 4 written exams in the testing center
He is a chemistry genius, but also a total ego-maniac. Such a jerk. Tries to make you feel stupid and has no respect for the students. He was literally so mean to me, I was shocked he asked if I would be interested in being a TA. Never want anything to do with a professor that makes you feel so little.
He is a pompous jerk.
Take Dr B if you wish for less HW and an A in the class. Chem105 is hard, you get out what you put into it. Lots of outside self studying if you want to do well. Don't worry about the FRQs, they're worth little of your grade. TAKE THE CAT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. The CAT makes or breaks your grade. Attendance not required but HIGHLY advised.
Nice guy. Odd choice in grading, puts all assignments as 0 at beginning of semester. Always available to help outside of class. Responds fast. Lectures are complex and build off each other, so don't miss class if you can. He lets you retake the CAT as much as needed since it's most of your grade, so be sure to take it as much as you can.
If you are taking Chemistry, take it with Dr. B! His class is by no means easy, but no one else can explain the concepts as well has him in such an engaging manner. I struggled with chemistry in the past, but I can now say that I not only succeeded in chemistry, but learned to love it. He wants you to succeed, not only in the class but in life.
So pompous and his classes have several avoidable problems. His grading system starts every assignment at a 0. Lectures are overly complicated and difficult to follow, and missing even one class puts you completely behind. The CAT dominates the entire grade, so the course ends up feeling like a repetitive test-prep cycle rather than real learning.
Using ALEKS helps a lot because you will get all the credit. For a Chem major it was really good to have the CAT exam, because I will have to know it all anyways. He is very inspiring and talked about Jesus Christ many times. Whenever talking about the gospel or Chemistry he did so in a passionate way. He was always willing to help.
Dr. B. is amazing! He's very straight forward and explains all of the concepts thoroughly, making sure we understand before he moves on. He brings a lot of humor to class to remind us we're college students, and he also brings the gospel into his lessons which is really cool. Not a lot of homework if you work on it throughout the semester.
