Great professor overall. Expects you to put forward a LOT of effort, but if you're willing to, you'll not find a better professor out there.
He is an amazing, charismatic teacher; however, he is also so much more intelligent than the average student that he cannot function on our level.
If you want to learn a lot, I definitely recommend taking him. However, the work load is going to be huge so be prepared. Like the others say, he's a genius!

Dr. Campos is an awesome teacher. He is extremely helpful and always clear in lecture - the material can be hard to grasp and the assignments are time consuming, but everything is very interesting. If you're thinking about a linguistics class, definitely take Campos.
Campos bases the whole class on a theory but presents it as fact and blows off all contradictions by claiming an error in method. He does a decent job of showing you what he wants so that you can do well in the class but he is often condescending and likes to look down on his students. However, he is a language genius. Oh well, good luck!!!
Senor Campos is an excellent teacher who knows a tremendous amount about languages. Be forewarned; the workload is intensive, but without a doubt, if you invest the time, he will improve your Spanish. Also a very nice guy always willing to help.
Dude teaches things very well, but grades very strictly. Hard, but helpful. His answer to anything your dictionary tells you being wrong is to get a better dictionary.
Ton of work, but his main goal is to get you speaking more like a native- which is great when you're working at this level. He wants you to do well and will drop tests/paper grades when everyone does poorly, and give you chance for improvement. I pulled through with an A, only because I wanted it... no piece of cake.
I love that man! The class (syntax) was difficult but I learned a ton and he is SO enthusiastic and engaging. Take his class!
Hector is no joke. He will teach you a lot, is nice and engaging, but hands down the hardest teacher I've ever had. Don't take this class unless you willing to work, you will "suffer through it" as he likes to say. Having said that, if you are willing to put in the effort he will improve your spanish like no other teacher can and he's kinda funny
An incredible prof! Will pop examples from one thousand languages or derive words from Latin into any Romance language... He'll make the hardest problem seem like a trifle. He'll show you how linguistics, philosophy, biology, psychology, physics... are all connected... You'll never work as hard, but you'll never learn as much, though. A real genius!
I've had Hector for two semesters of Modern Greek now. He will have you speaking the language after 5 minutes! Through dialogs, mythology, history, movies, you'll practice all the structures you learn with the other professors and you will feel confident that your Greek improves day by day. I wish he were teaching the full class!
My firstborn son will be named Hector.
We taught ourselves Classical Latin (we had to speak it in class!), then he took us to Old and Modern Spanish, going through all the imaginable Romance languages and dialects -he speaks them all!- ... I enjoyed singing songs in Judeo-Spanish and dancing to some modern songs to study the structure of the syllable. Lots of work but all worth it!
The best professor at Georgetown...hands down! Hector is "the God of Syntax", and is one of the smartest people I've ever met, but is super down to earth and hilarious. He also explains everything very well, and although it was one of the hardest classes I've taken, he really wants everyone to do well, and gives you lots of extra-credit options.
Enthusiastic, genuinely cares about his students, but can be intimidating ("tough love"). Presents material clearly, but focuses more on techniques/skills than theory. Gives unclear instructions for assignments. Grades strictly (at times, nit-picky). However, allows re-dos. Overall: great personality, but biassed and too detail-oriented.
you know that class you can hear through the walls that seems to be having a great time - laughing, singing, listening to music? that's this class. amazing. who knew "rakata" was essential to learning spanish linguistics?
He has to be the most engaging professor at Georgetown. It's impossible not to smile in class.
campos is the man! he's always super happy, loves his students and his classes are always interesting (provided you have at least some interest in the topic). extremely smart guy and really helpful, approachable and friendly. a must-take professor at georgetown for spanish/linguistics
He is a very nice guy. He is very nit picky and corrects ever little mistake. He does not like texting in class. He requires 2 hours of studying each night for his summer course. His grading system says he erases the previous test u took if ur newest one is higher. If its lower he averages. There is a test every week. Also an essay. Max 600 words
I love him! Only had him for one session of summer school but he was great. 2 hour long classes went by quickly and he really got me to start understanding Spanish grammar. Always willing to help and to accommodate his teaching to fit students' needs. Tough grader but fair. Best Spanish teacher I've had at here by far- TAKE HIM!
By far the best professor I have ever had. He is an absolute genius. His ability to relay information is incomparable. I would suggest taking this professor if you are a serious student who wants to learn. You can't help but learn in his class. He is quite helpful and truly cares about all of his students. I had him two semesters and they wer
Complete and total adoration. Have taken two of his classes so far and will take as many more as I can before graduating. Consider it a privilege to study under Campos. He's brilliant.
Campos is nothing short of an amazing professor: incredibly passionate about his students and the subject matter, always energetic and passionate, a very liberal grader, and a genius: the man speaks 14 languages! If ever given the opportunity, without a doubt take Campos!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. He is a genius and has an amazing ability to transfer his knowledge on to his students. Class was ALWAYS entertaining and he was always willing to help. If you ever get the chance, TAKE Professor Campos! You won't regret it!
Had him for Structure of the Spanish Language. A genius brain housed in a gem of a man. He will demand work from you, but you will walk out knowing more about Spanish grammar and syntax than you ever thought possible.
TAKE PROFESSOR CAMPOS. HE IS THE FREAKIN' MAN. (Plus you get authentic Pan de Pascua at the end of Fall semester and awesome Greek music stuck in your head forever thereafter "Matia mou, matia mou...")
Prof. Campos is my favorite professor at Georgetown, hands down. He is the most intelligent, nicest, most generous man. Linguistics is world and he's a genius at it. His teaching style is very kind, fun, and friendly; you learn without knowing it. He makes you feel cared about and important. Being in his class was a joy, privilege, and honor. Take!
He is one of the best professor I've ever had, he's smart and passionate about his work. His classes are no picnic and he will make you work hard, but he'll be always willing to assist you in anything.
Definitely not easy, but absolutely worth it. Dr. Campos doesn't just teach you something and then test you on it; he teaches you something and then gives you a problem and asks you to apply, stretch, twist, and generally play with what you've just learned. Challenging, but rewarding, and fun. He's a pretty funny guy too.
Not a big fan. An unreasonable stickler. Wasn't very understanding. Amazing teacher, he knew his subject, but he wasn't very personable or nice to students outside the classroom. I respect his knowledge, but not his person. I would look for another teacher if you're not a language major.
Campos is an energetic professor and gives a decent refresher on some obscure grammar rules. I haven't had Campos for linguistics, but in my class, we did entirely too much busy work. We had to memorize a LOT of vocab and do activities in our text that took an unreasonable amount of time. Be prepared to WORK if you take this class.
Hector is a very passionate professor. He incorporates vocabulary, grammar, and culture into the class in a very unique way. Be prepared to do busy work and dance bachata, salsa, etc. Overall, he is very helpful and will improve your technicalformal writing. I had lots of fun taking his class.
Last 15 minutes of class are dedicated to dancing which is great, class is geared toward non native speakers which was not what I expected. Hector is really passionate about teaching which shows in his lectures. Tests are hard and require a lot of studying (lots of vocab, translations, grammar). A- with lots of work, A w extra class.
He's an amazing professor. If you can only take one professor, take him! He is so knowledgeable, kind, and caring. He really gives you a well rounded course on Spanish. I took his advance spanish for business 1 & 2.
Quite a bit of homework, but nothing unmanageable. Tells you exactly what will be on exams. Tough grader at times, but is incredibly helpful, passionate, knowledgeable, and fun. 1010 would recommend. If you don't take a class with Professor Campos at Georgetown you aren't doing college right. You will learn so much.
Prof Campos is truly one of the best professors at Georgetown - by far the best in the Spanish Department. He makes class enjoyable and interesting and he honestly wants you to succeed. You can expect a lot of homework in this class but you can also expect to improve your Spanish a LOT. The exams are designed to help you do well. Take this class!!
Professor Campos is hands down one of the best professors I've had at Georgetown. He's super energetic, kind and passionate, and he is always willing to help any student out. My Spanish has improved exponentially. There is a lot of busy work but it is worth it in the end, as he let's you auto-evalute yourself at the end of the course.
Excellent professor and a great class overall. Professor Campos is truly an expert in Spanish and in languages (he knows something like 15), and will challenge you to improve your Spanish skills. Not particularly hard, but you must work to earn your good grade. We always danced at the end of class - 10/10 would recommend, he is a wonderful man.
Professor Campos is the most engaging and entertaining Spanish professor I have taken in a Spanish department full of wonderful instructors. He is very accommodating and does what he can to help you get a good grade. There are assignments for each class, but grading is fair. There is a lot of content, but never any surprises.
Professor Campos is an amazing professor! I took his advanced Spanish for Business course, and I had the best time! His lectures are really engaging -- they are actually more of the discussions. He provides great examples of everything he teaches, and is very clear about what he wants done for each assignment. Take him if you need advanced Span.
Profesor Campos is amazing. Very energetic and always end up crying towards the end because he is so funny. Very knowledgeable and impressive and would definitely take him again
Professor Campos is not only the best Spanish professor that I have ever had, but he is also one of my favorite professors that I have had at Georgetown. Yes, more difficult than your typical Spanish class, BUT IT IS SO WORTH IT. Grading expectations are clear. Taking him again for Business Spanish, hands down take Hector Campos.
Even though the material in the class is boring, he makes it fun! I think he is an amazing professor who is funny and wants his students to learn while still enjoy his class. I loved going to his classes and I can't wait to take another class with him!
Two manageable midterms, and a final. I did not expect my Spanish to improve so much in one four-month semester, but Prof. Campos made it happen. a brilliant man, gifted lecturer, and all-around great person--you'll want to take his class.
Prof. Campos is, without a doubt, the best Spanish professor I've ever had. He makes even the most boring and dry grammatical topics in Spanish seem interesting and improves your language skills substantially over the course of the semester. Also incredibly smart. Beyond all that, a genuinely great guy who really cares about his students.
Professor Campos is the best professor I had in my four years at Georgetown. He genuinely cares so much about each of his students and truly wants them to learn. He makes it clear that the focus is to learn, not to worry about grades. He is so passionate about what he does and is an incredible teacher, and an even better person.
Hector Campos is one of the sweetest men alive. I was not the best in this class, but he put in the time to help me learn and understand the material. Even though this class was very tough and at times frustrating, Campos makes sure you don't become overwhelmed and is always available to help.
I'm a ling minor who ended up in this graduate level class, and I struggled. He knows syntax extremely well and seems to care that students learn and are challenged, but there was an assignment due every single class, and they weren't short or easy and they sometimes applied concepts that he assumed you knew from other classes.
We love Hector. He is so joyful and his lectures about Spanish give little grammatical tricks that I havent seen anywhere else. I valued learning from him a lot, although the homework was plentiful as per spanish dept guidelines. He let us sort of grade ourselves in the end but i dont necessarily think everyone got an A. Would highly recommend
Hector is an amazing professor!!! He's extremely passionate about the subject matter and is very helpful during office hours. He cares a lot about his students and adds fun elements (like songs and dances) to the class to make it more enjoyable. Most of his students end up taking him for consecutive semesters. Would definitely recommend!
Love, love, LOVE Professor Campos! One of the sweetest professors ever and hilarious, too. Workload can be heavy and grading can seem arbitrary at times but overall the class and assignments are easy. Still, I learned SO much and advanced a ton as a Spanish speaker. Hope to be able to take Professor Campos again before I graduate! Amazing class.
Professor Campos is seriously one of the best Spanish teachers I've had at Georgetown. I've loved Business Spanish and I didn't even want to take Spanish this semester. He's a chill guy, easy to understand, a great teacher, and overall wonderful human. TAKE HIM!
Hector is the man!
Getting into this class was difficult, but super worth it. Loved him, loved the topic, loved it all. Continuing with B Spanish next semester and can't wait!
LOVED HIM, LEARNED TO DANCE, what more could you want from a Spanish class?
This class was not too much work, we covered a lot of material, and Hector made it really easy to absorb everything. So much love for this guy!
Professor Campos is amazing! I've loved this class and have learned so much more than just Business Spanish. He teaches you grammar and pronunciation that we might not have picked up on during introductory classes. He makes class fun and teaches you different Spanish dances, too. Lots of weekly homework. Definitely would recommend this class!
Profesor Campos is one of the best professors I've had at Georgetown. He makes every class engaging and fun to be in, we even dance at the end of class. He is a tough grader on papers but the class is still completely worth it to take.
Profesor Campos is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. Truly cares about his students, is super helpful in helping develop language skills with grammar and speaking, and creates a fun and energetic atmosphere. While he challenges you, it is truly worth it and he will help you if you struggle at all. Sweetest professor in the dep't.
He makes you work for your grade but he is fair. Honestly, its a hard class, but I would 100% take it again. The smaller assignemtsn can get a bit annoying.
There's a bunch of little assignments and you have to really stay on top of them. I started letting stuff fall through the cracks and then was like screwed when we had to put together our portfolios (which was all the work I hadn't done) for the first exam.
so. much. work. just don't bother taking unless you're actively willing to commit at least 2 hours a night to this class. i like him a lot, but this class was not worth it.
LOVE PROF CAMPOS!!!! This class was so much work but totally worth it.
He's an amazing professor and cares that we learn but he's tough. Will call you out if you don't know your stuff. Definitely worth taking at least one class with him as I've learned the most from this class than any other spanish class I've ever taken.
Hector is a true legend. We danced during every class, and he created a super fun atmosphere. That being said, DO NOT take Advanced Spanish for Business unless you're a. willing to work and be graded arbitrarily, largely on grammar as opposed to knowledge and b. actually interested in the topic. Otherwise, you and your GPA will suffer. Trust me.
Fantastic professor who is willing to work with students. His class requires a ton of busy work though, usually around 2-3 small assignments due per class (and he only really collects the assignments 3 times per semester so you're in definite danger of falling behind). Class is pretty fun, if you're not willing to participate don't take the class
Learned the most I've ever learned in any Spanish class, but also by far the most homework ever too. Absurd amount of material for tests that make them really hard and just a few small mistakes can make an essay a B+ ("because this is advanced"). Having said that, class is fun and you will dance. Though he videotapes it for Youtube, which is weird.
Prof. Campos was by far the best Spanish professor that I had at Georgetown. He was engaging, genuinely invested in his students, and the only Spanish class I took here that made me feel more comfortable about my speaking ability. I loved Adv Span for Business 1 so much that I took Adv 2 just for fun--not even as a requirement. Thanks Prof Campos!
SOOOO much work. At least triple any other Spanish class I've had at Georgetown. It's absurd. It's a pretty fun class like in the classroom, but not worth it to take unless you really really want to learn Spanish and you have at least 10+ hours a week to dedicate just to get a B+ in the class.
Okay, all the reviews are pretty accurate. But this guy is the BEST, my favorite at Georgetown. Hilarious, makes the classes fun and engaging. We dance in class, it's very random and fun. Yes, a lot of homework, but not to the point where you shouldn't take the class. You go to Georgetown, challenge yourself with this class and it'll be worth it.
This class is a lot of work and I think we really should do the grammar in class instead of making most of it at home work. I feel like we all really kinda struggle with that aspect of it and that its primarily what makes this class difficult
This class was fantastic! Professor Campos is an amazing instructor. Highly recommend.
Prof. Campos is a very caring and intelligent teacher. I learned more in this Spanish class than any other I've taken at Georgetown. There is a lot of work/small assignments so you need to stay organized, but it is very doable. I highly recommend this class!
Professor Campos is very knowledgeable and cares a lot about his students. There are a lot of weekly assignments, but they are doable. He gives clear feedback and you learn a lot. Highly recommend taking him!
Wonderful professor. Very possible to get an A in his class. He assigns lots of little homework assignments that I recommend you complete before each and every class. Seriously, do not spend the first 2-3 weeks of class falling behind on the work because it will come back to bite you in the end. The work is very manageable if you build a routine.
Was a very fun class and not too hard to do well in. Important to turn in small homework assignments every day but was pretty manageable.
Professor Campos really helped me grow as a Spanish student. We did have a lot of work in the class, but he taught grammar in a way that was easy to understand and so helpful. I've been taking Spanish for 10 years and never have I had a teacher explain grammar with reasoning that made sense as Professor Campos did. I would recommend this class!
Really good Spanish class where you actually learn relevant things. Make sure you do all the assignments because you have to turn in everything in a portfolio on each exam day. Oh, and Professor Campos is super funny and amazing. Take this class!
Well organized class where you learn basic business concepts in spanish. There are many daily homeworks and essays but all pretty much easy to do. He grades fairly, is easy to understand, and he's very good at teaching grammar. Just be ready for LOTS of vocab (and dancing!)
Sweet, fun guy. His Span for Public Health class is small and he keeps you engaged and talking the whole time. Receptive to feedback, cares about how you're doing. Dancing in class is fun! Wish I could take him again.
I LOVE syntax - I have taken classes from various syntax professors at other institutions, but couldn't waive his class for bureaucratic reasons. Prof. Campos almost made me HATE syntax - I dreaded going to syntax class because the atmosphere and the pressure in his class were so bad. I will not be taking any other syntax classes at Georgetown.
Such a sweet guy. Spanish for Public Health he was very caring and kind. We laughed quite a bit, he gave us candy, we danced. He drew uncircumcised/circumcised genitalia on the board. Funny guy. I always felt prepared for exams because we practiced so much in class. A huge difference from other Spanish classes. Recommend to everyone
Professor Campos is very fun. He assigns a decent amount of homework but they are mostly writing assignments. He grades easy and the exams/final is very easy. You have to participate a lot but it is very helpful. 100% recommend
Lots of participation but Prof Campos made me feel like it was okay to be wrong/not know and he was kind and helpful about it so it was completely fine! A lot of homework, but it's not too bad! He's super sweet and caring! Span for Public Health is one of the best classes I've taken at Georgetown and he is one of my most favorite profs ever!
Syntax was and still is my favorite class. So much fun and so much learning. It's sad to see him leave Georgetown. I am not a syntactician but am considering taking Syntax 2 because of Hecfor.
