he is a nice guy but he has fairly tough tests and quizzes. study the powerpoints in depth and detail and take every test seriously and you should be fine
Boring not a good teacher and does not help students at all, his reviews are nothing like the tests!!!!
just read the powerpoints
soo boring. poor man. he always starts rambling about astrophysical formations or whatnot. what a bore. everyone copied in that class. i felt sorry for him sometimes but oh well, with no effort at all and i only attended 3 lectures in the whole semester i got a B.
Pretty boring instructor, he rambles on a lot about things and once he's stuck on whatever he's rambling about, he's on it for a while. His reviews suck and don't even relate to his tests. You need the book A LOT because he gives random things. Pay attention to his examples! Sucky class. Oh yeah and ask lots of questions to kill time he likes that.
Really boring. Has a very thick accent and hard to understand. He definately rambles and seems unprepared for class most of the time. I just study the powerpoints and have got B's on most of the tests. I probably should have purchased the book if I wanted an A
Has a HUGE accent. cannot understand him at all. Doesn't really help when you need it. Doesn't anwer your questions.. EXTREMELY BORING CLASS.
Study the Powerpoints closely! His lectures are very boring, but he has pop quizzes on the clickers, which means they can't be made up. Heavy accent, but I can understand him somewhat. Tests aren't too hard as long as you know the technical details of your material, but do study HARD. Take this class with anyone else if you have the chance.
SUCKS. Huge accent, don't understand a word he says.
This guy is an IDIOT! He was a horrible teacher never helped out the students and test reviews didn't have any help whatsoever because it wouldn't be on the test! BEWARE! If you're smart drop it and go to geology!!!!
This guy is in his own little world and is oblivious to every thing to the fact that you are talking to him
He doesn't know how to explain himself
This teacher was not helpful. He obviously knows Astronomy but his teaching leaves everything to be desired! Can't afford to drop BUT wish I could!!!!!
His class is easy. Very easy. Just pay attention to his lectures and read the powerpoints he puts on Blackboard. Do the study guides and you'll be fine.
The reviews for the tests are horrible! nothing like the actual tests... seems like a nice guy but it's a really boring class...Doesn't seem to like helping you out when you have questions either. Wish I could afford to drop this class!! STAY AWAY! lol
Heavy accent, doesn't review for his tests, you MUST study the powerpoints in detail in order to pass
Just pay attention and you'll be good, but if you want you can always struggle and read te notes by yourself
His lectures are clear if you're willing to listen, and he covers about 90% of the tests in lectures. If you don't go to class, though, and only pay attention to his slides online, then you're screwed because they are about as clear as mud and go on and on. Class is 4 tests and 4 easy assignments. Whole lot easier than physics or chem would be.
Very interesting class and quite easy to pass if you put effort into it. He gives out 4 tests, 1 final exam and very few assignments. Textbook and workbook are not needed but they are good for studying.
You have to already have an interest in the subject to get the most out of the course. A few tests, a few pop quizzes (which no ones ever in class for), and no need to buy the book, lecture tutorials do help, but everything is on his power point slides. Study his slides and you're guaranteed an easy A.
Horrible, boring, teacher. He lectures the whole hour and a half. Heavy accent.
Science is a difficult subject for me already, and he is a horrible instructor. He goes over 30% of the powerpoint and the rest you have to figure out for yourself. Some students excelled in class since science comes easy to them, but the majority were failing. Hard professor and he should be avoided at all costs. Tests are long and difficult also.
Class is not mandatory so easy to miss class often. Which makes test material more difficult. Go to class and pay attention and it will be easy.
Easy! go to class, do assignments and pay attention. also very interesting subject!
Professor Noriega is very passionate about his subject(astronomy). The class is interesting and easy, can learn a lot if you attend class, but if you are not into it or don't go to class, even the names of the planets will be the toughest to learn. Fair grading, 4 exams (can exempt the final), lowets grade is dropped, videos and a good TA.
The class is not hard at all. i missed it once a week for personal reasons but read the notes on blackboard. The guy explains things thoroughly, he's a good teacher. Exams are multiple choice based on the lecture notes. No math, too much to cover but I enjoyed the material. I recommend taking this astronomy class
I expected Astronomy to be more interesting, but his lectures are a little dry and boring. Exams are relatively easy, and the lowest grade is dropped. Anyone with an A average can be exempt from the final. Easy A if you show up and pay attention.
This class is so easy if you just keep up with the power points. Easy A
Work and quizzes done in class must be done for exemptions. Average a 90% to be exempt. Recommend if you want an easy A.
You need to pay attention and study to pass, attendance is not mandatory, but he gives random assignments that are not on the syllabus. His lectures are not interesting, half the people in my class were always on their phones.
Honestly, as long as you pay attention or atleast share a passion for Astronomy then you will do just fine in his classes. Try not to miss class because there is no going back the next time you see him in class. Paying attention and taking notes is KEY in order to pass the class with flying colors.
Maybe I took the class at the wrong time, BUT I literally would want to sleep all the time. He is super Lecture heavy, he says you NEED the book but you really don't. It was a waste of money, I took this class because it was one of the easier sciences but it wasn't. The only way to pass is to attend his TA tutoring courses which is @ difficult time
Dr. Noriega is very passionate about Astronomy, and he is not a bad teacher. Lectures can be a bit dry and boring, but the exams are easy if you show up. He drops your lowest test score, but if you average 90 or better on the exams, instead of dropping one, he'll use to exempt you from the final.
This professor is NOT clear. He has a thick accent and is extremely dry and boring. This class is so easy if you go through the slides and learn the info. Attend the TA sessions, theyll help you. Avoid him at all cost.
Very easy class. As long as you pay attention in class, you have nothing to worry about. He is very repetitive and teaches for the masses. If you like to move quickly you'll be frustrated. Multiple choice exams.
Professor Noriega is very passionate about teaching astronomy. He is a very good teacher. Book is not used. Paying attention to his lecture and reviewing the power points you will get an easy A. Tests are long, 50 multiple choice questions, but very easy.! I do recommend him!
I wouldn't understand his teaching it was confusing to understand. The PowerPoint are long so you don't know what to study. He's always giving quizzes or homework which it does help. He does accept extra credit but he won't tell you till the end of the course.
Professor Noriega's class is one of the hardest ones I have taken. His PowerPoints, while posted on BlackBoard, are over 100 slides, and studying for his exams is difficult as his questions are never straight forward. He has a lot of pop quizzes. He grades his exams with a curve but it is very difficult to pass. It's hard to get even a "B."
Show up, pay attention, study and you will pass. His tests are pretty expansive so don't take them lightly, once again, studying is a must. He's a very polite person, provides plenty of help through his TA, and he will go over things if needed. The only downside, his class is extremely boring. He teaches with very little enthusiasm.
Dr. Noriega is very knowledgeable, nice and respectful. There are times when he may use advanced astronomical terminology simply because he forgets, but ask him to define and he will explain efficiently. Study hard for each test, if you have a question in regard to terminology or words used on the test; ask him and he will also explain. Good luck!
He's a good teacher: passionated about the subject, energetic and attentive. He's tests are difficult but you'll do fine if you read the powerpoints and put attention to his classes.
He is so passionate about what he is teaching and that really translates to his teaching style. There are about 4 tests (including the final and midterm) and maybe 2 quizzes, all of which he offers study sessions ahead of time for. You don't need to purchase the book, only the workbook. Go to class and you'll easily get an A.
Dr. Noriega is passionate about astronomy and it shows in how knowledgeable he is about astronomy. The PowerPoints hold all the information needed for the test, to include a review which if you look at go to class and if need be attend tutoring sessions, you will get an A.
All the info is in his lectures or notes, lectures easy to understand. A lot of exams but chance to be except of final. Very few assaignments. Definetively would take again.
He is very passionate on his lectures. always take notes of what he says for when you review for the exams. Don't skip a lecture or else youll fall behind. Exams are easy if you study the chapters thoroughly. amazing professor, he knows his stuff very well.
I was told this class was an easy A & I completely disagree. It is not too difficult but the material covered is quite extensive & will require you to attend the lectures & study prior to the tests. Take advantage of the review sessions before the tests! Dr. Noriega is a brilliant, knowledgeable man but often spends too much time lecturing 1 topic
Literally missed 50% of the class and still came out with an A. One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Study for the tests and you'll be fine.
Class was EZ PZ. Downside is you will likely have to waste money on workbooks. Exams are very easy and always about the topics you covered so just read over your notes and you're basically guaranteed an A. As a sidenote, a bonus to this professor is his passion in his field, making the lectures a great learning experience.
Amazing professor. Really easy to understand.
Dr. Noriega is very passionate about what he teaches. His class consists of four exams and one final. He also does individual/group activities in class and might throw in a quiz from time to time. He required a workbook which was kind of a waste of money. He posts all of his lectures on bb, make sure to study if you want to pass
Honestly I don't know why Dr. Noriega chose this style of lecture. His lectures are based on power points that are super long and hard to follow. Most power points he posts on bb in two parts and range around 60-100 slides per part. His pop quizzes and tests are really hard. Make sure you review EVERY SINGLE slide if you want to pass.
I loved learning about Astronomy and the solar system but would've enjoyed it more with a different prof. He's not clear on what exactly is going to be on the exams which made me a little frustrated. Lectures are super boring yet super important to attend. Lab was a breeze though.
Lectures could be extremely boring at times. Tests are based all on info in powerpoints that he goes over in class, but he ends up posting them on Blackboard and since he isn't the best at lecturing, I usually ended up teaching myself. ALSO - I highly suggest going to the weekly tutoring sessions - the TA is much better at explaining than he is.
My favorite professor this semester. Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about astronomy. I do not understand how people can say his classes are boring, he is a wonderful professor, and does his best to make the classes and concepts understandable. If you fail this class is out of your own negligence or lack of interest.
He is very passion with his lectures but sometimes they can be boring. People are expecting to have super easy classes were you don't have to go and expect to pass. He does not take attendance but I recommend you do so for the surprise quiz or assignments which are easy. You also can just study the day before for the exams.
He lectures non stop, and he is so hard to understand. He has a hard time finding the right words sometimes which makes his lectures extremely hard to follow. And he was not helpful at all, at least to me he wasnt. And he does not do a good job answering questions.
Great Professor, very passionate about his field. If you go to every classes you should get at least a B. His test are all based on his power points and lectures. As long as you take decent notes during class you'll pass his test. Make sure to go to every class sometimes he has pop quizzes or in class assignments that he take for a grade.
Didn't know what to expect from this class at first, but I liked Dr. Noriega's passionate teaching style from the firts day, and also seeing my name on the list of test1's top scores he publicly posted. All multiple choice exams are curved. Fair grading and he drops the lowest test grade too. If your test average is 90 you can exempt the final.
Good class and great professor. 4 multiple choice exams and 6 quizzes and easy assignments total. Dr. Noriega Mendoza is a motivating lecturer. A physics friend of mine told me he is the only professional astrophysicist teaching at utep
I do recommend this class despite taking it sooo early.....8 am omg ! this spring professor noriega curve all his tests and gave extra credit. He is a nice, serious guy, very into his field. Interesting astronomical explanations and videos, easy quizzes. Take this class !
Very interesting class and a motivated instructor. Pretty easy to get an A unless a) you frequently skip class and b) you are convinced that science and astronomy suck (I'm a non-science major).
I took this excellent science class with an inspirational professor who lives and feels what he does. Dr Noriega transmits his passion for astronomy in every lecture. Clear and intuitive explanations of astronomical facts. Easy multiple-choice exams and his notes are all available online. I'd suggest a stargazing activity in the summer, thanks.
Not clear on what he expects from the students, midterms are 50 questions long, some questions which were not covered appear on the midterms. Just uses powerpoints. Removes points for odd reasons on some assignments (took off 15 points for not having sentences numbered on one of the assignments despite never mentioning it as a requirement).
Dr. Noriega is a great teacher, he is clearly passionate about what he is teaching and its evident in class. He does a recap of the previous class which is great for students who miss his class. I loved his class and would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Noreiga is very passionate about astronomy. The class was pretty much all lecture which can get a little boring, but pay attention if you want to pass the tests. He gives exemptions for the final and there's hardly any homework, but 4 tests and 3 quizzes. Not terribly hard, you just really need to pay attention and study.
He is a good professor who is very into Astronomy. You can tell that he loves what he does and doesn't get tired of teaching. In my class, many people stopped going but I recommend that you stay in class if you really want to pass. There are no pop quizzes, he warns you the class before that there will be a quiz. Be there or you won't hear about it
Professor Noriega is one of the best teachers I have taken at utep. All you have to do is show up and take good notes. His test are relatively easy, again just pay attention in class and you should get an easy A.
Not a super difficult class just a lot of content. Professor Noriega is very passionate about astronomy and goes in detail in every class lecture. However, go to the study sessions before the exams to know what to focus your studies on.
His passion for astronomy has truly inspired me beyond this class. As I gaze up to the stars, I think about the lectures and the way he would express every concept with true interest. His tests were easy and all in the lectures. He would give easy quizzes and assignments. I admire professors who enjoy their field so much that teaching it is simple.
I took it on online and it is the easiest thing in the world, while still being interesting enough.
His teaching method is based on the powerpoint notes he gives you. If you study those and go to lectures this class would be an easy grade. He does make this course a bit difficult to engage in but not to where it affects your grades. He makes sure that everyone understands the powerpoint before testing.
His online class is pretty simple and straightforward. If you can't attend the zoom calls, he'll upload recordings of them along with the lecture slides. Class consists of quizzes and 5 exams. He's passionate and overall a solid choice. I also took his ASTR 1107 lab which was pretty easy--it's ran by his TA and everything is in groups (no exams).
His class isn't too hard, but you do have to put in a bit of work. I barely went to class and mostly attended the TA's review sessions and got B's on the tests. His weekly assignments are easy, you just have to watch a YouTube video and answer questions. I do love the passion he has for astronomy though.
Very Solid professor and extremely passionate about his subject
He really managed to keep me engaged during his lectures. I learned a lot during the semester. I like the fact that he seems very passionate on what he does, unlike other professors. He will give you the link to the textbook, ppt, online resources and attendance is not mandatory (though he includes specific stuff mentioned during class on exams).
This class started off being easy to manage and interesting. This professor mentioned the class was hybrid, he did not say anything whatsoever about attendance. Halfway through the semester he starts giving surprise pop quizzes in class? He did not care if you missed it and he never gave a heads up about it. Boring lectures made me fall asleep.
Boring lectures, he just give quizzes and exams, only like one or two activities per semester. I didn't like the class at all, be careful if you want to take it with him.
see how i said the class is not mandatory? WELL even though he says it isnt, he USES IT AGAINST YOUR GRADE.
He is a great professor tbh, his lectures contained tons of info and it was interesting, but they could be a little overwhelming. We would have quizzes every week (15-20 questions), and exams (40-50 questions), they were all easy since he provides the ppts on blackboard.
He has some classifications we need to do and the minimum was 100 and I did 337 so naturally you'd believe he'd give me the 100. No. Because I didn't send an extra image (many didn't and got full credit) he gave me a 90. I guess doing 237 wasn't enough. Regardless he giving a hard time and doesn't respond to emails quickly. Do not recommend.
If you want to get an A go to class its straightforward. The tests are online and all the information you need is on powerpoint. So many lazy people here think they deserve an A but they don't even make an effort and are probably the people who either dont go to class or look at their phones all class. Its an easy class.
ASTR1307 fall semester 24. There's a lecture every class and although attendance isn't mandatory he did take attendance on random days which does affect your grade. Exams and assignments are all online on blackboard and due Sunday. He does post the slides he lectures, he also requires 200 classifications on zooniverse which is 15% of your grade.
Attendance is not mandatory, and the only time he takes attendance is to give extra credit. he uses a free textbook, and the slides he uses in the classes are in Blackboard, also you don't have to do the final exam if you do well on the weekly quizzes and exams.
The class by itself is easy, the problem is the professor, the way he grades is weird. The students have to do like 10 quiz throughout the whole course, they get 2 attempts, but if they decide to use both, he will give the average of the attempts, also never put in the grades until the course is over. Also he is difficult to contact online.
I want other students to know he does not care. He opens assignments without notice and has very little time to complete them. He does not reopen anything nor cares. His class is basically lectures and when you ask him something he makes you feel dumb. I have never reviewed a professor before, but I really don't like his class.
The professor had very good knowledge on the subject, however, he wasn't a good professor to have in class. Every lecture was the same formula - all talking, "make sure you do your homework," goodbye. Assignments were often lengthy, but you mostly had the entire course to do everything. Overall, his course was easy, just focus up and you'll be good
