Not an accounting major, but still enjoyed the class. The tests aren't easy, but there are review sessions, which help a lot. If you have to take 242, try to get Prof. Derstine. Definitely recommend.

Derstine is young and new at JMU, she makes the class easy for students. Test questions are covered in class. Comprehensive final exam from the department. A lot of homework for only 5% of final grade. TAKE HER!!!

Professor Derstine is awesome! I never had a professor in the business school that cared so much for their students. If you go to her office hours and show that you are putting in the effort, she will help you out a lot. Know the in-class slides verbatim, study the mockmidterms, and do all the homeworks correctly and you are guaranteed at least a B

Heidi was by far the best teacher I've had at JMU. Accounting is a little tricky no matter who you have but she is ALWAYS available to help you. If you go to office hours and make an effort to participate in class she'll love you and help ypu whenever you need it. 10/10 would take again.

Heidi is the GOAT. Test reviews with problems that are almost exactly the same as the problems on the test. Memorize her lectures, you'll be able to do decently on the mc. Theres 5 short tests which save your grade a lot. There's easy homework every week. Go to her office hours, she's more than willing to help. Easy B, even A, just study. TAKE HER!

Her lectures can be a little boring sometimes, but it's so manageable. Put in the effort outside of class and utilize office hours. She loves helping students and wants you to succeed, so she will do what she can to make that happen. There's 5 tests and a final, so one bad test grade barely does anything. Definitely prepared us well for the final

By far one of the best professors I have ever had. 242 is not an easy course but she did the best she could to help every student who needed help. Answered questions thoroughly, graded homework and tests in a quick manner, and was all around a genuine person. If you have the option 100% take her.

241 is a hard class by nature but Professor Derstine is about as good as they come when it comes to accounting teachers. Very prepared for class and her lectures are great. Tests are hard and will require a lot of studying but this class is going to be hard no matter what teacher you get. 100x better than any of my friends teachers.

Heidi is by far one of the best professors you can take for financial accounting. She is always available to answer questions in her office hours, and genuinely cares about her students. 15/10 take her!

Professor Derstine was a great professor. Definitely go to her office hours because she goes out of her way to help you and is a good professor to befriend. The actual work was very hard (at least for me) but she made it manageable. there are a lot of quizzes and tests, homework assignments as well, but she drops the lowest quizzes. take her!!!

Professor Derstine is my favorite professor that I've had at JMU. She's one of the most understanding and fair professor's I have ever come across. I took her for COB 241 as well and struggled a lot, but she was always willing to meet outside of her listed office hours and I don't think I would have passed the class without her help.

Had her for 241 and 242 and i LOVED her! Never did I think that i would enjoy accounting but with her I do! Lots of tests so if you bomb one, its not the end of the world. You do need to put in the effort to study or you won't do well.

She so amazing! Accounting does not come easily to me and she really helped me get through both COB 241 and 242. She is so helpful and understanding and is very interested in what she is teaching which helps. Take her if you can!!!!!!! she's by far my favorite professor at JMU

cares about students. she will curve tests with partial credit and most likely curve final grades by a point or so. attendance is mandatory. test every 2 weeks so a lot of short term memory, but not difficult. hw maybe 1x a week and not long at all. highly recommend for 242 (and heard 241 is good)

Derstine goes the extra mile when it comes to helping students. She provides partial credit on exams and is always willing to meet if you need help. There is an exam every 2 weeks but it really broke up the material and if you do poorly on one you can recover. Study the lectures packets she gives and do the practice problems and you will do well!

Prof Derstine is such a kind, genuine woman. Accounting is not my strong suit so on many occasions I went to her office hours and she helped tremendously. She prints out any supplemental material for students each class. In my opinion, she is the best 242 professor you can get, so take her if you can!

I LOVE HER!!!! Best teacher I have ever had a JMU and made 241 a lot easier than I heard from others. Went to her office about once a week and she helped me so much through the semester. I am so happy I got to have her as a teacher because she is my favorite teacher! Definitely have to work for this class and study a lot but that's with any 241.

If you get lucky and get Derstine, you have hit the lottery. She is the best professor I have had during my time at JMU. She hands out lecture notes which makes understanding material and following along very easy. There are no surprises on exams. Material on exams are straight from the notes and practice quizzes she puts on canvas.

She is hands down THE BEST COB prof you will ever have. Out of all the classes I have taken at JMU, she has been the only one that teaches the content extremely well. I wish all the professors were like her. 241 and 242 were a breeze with her. If you fail her class it's because you suck. She gives you an outline for every chapter.

Derstine is so amazing. Accounting has never gone well for me and I had to retake 242 this past semester. She's so helpful and explains the material really well! I ended up actually learning the material which was very exciting and a first.

Accounting really isn't that difficult, and she gives you tons of opportunity to practice. It can get a little mundane at times, but she does a very good job at making sure you know the material before the tests. She's also very sweet and caring if you talk to her outside of class.

I love prof D. She's the best 241 prof not bc shes easy (241 is NOT easy, so get ready to bust your butt) but bc shes GREAT at teaching. Thanks to virtual class I didn't do too great in this class but she met with me lots and encouraged me. She truly cares ab you! Asks us every class if anyone has switched their major to accounting lol shes great.

Her rating says it all. Yes, 241 is hard, yes you will have to put the hours in outside of class to really understand the concepts but she makes the class as clear and easy to understand as she can. Take her, take her, take her. Beware 5 tests and no curving

Professor D was a fantastic professor. She really cares about her students and gives guided notes to fill out during lectures. She always answers emails and questions and has office hours at least once a week. Overall, a great professor!

Probably my favorite professor that I have ever had. She provides so many resources such as lecture notes and study guides. The material is hard but is doable if you study it.

Professor D is a great choice. 4 tests, HW for each chapter (weekly) and a cumulative final. She is very fair, prints out notes for you, walks through examples in class, is always available outside of class, tells you exactly what to expect, and prepares you well. It's obvious that she genuinely wants you to succeed. 10/10 recommend!

241 was way harder than 242 and I had heidi for both. She's a great prof and lays everything out for you, there are no curveballs. Just go to class, take the notes, and study for the tests and you'll be fine. Go to OH for help on hw! Would take again even though I got a D+ bc 241 is hard but heidi at least knows her stuff & is good at teaching.

Great professor, her notes are clear and PowerPoints are exactly like the tests. If you put in at least 2 hours of studying a week for her class you're definitely getting an A, if I had put more into it I would've done better. She is really understanding and wants you to succeed. One of the best in the accounting department.

Clearly lays out what's expected in each chapter with packets for each class. Always tells you when something would be a good question on an exam. All around a great professor who wants to see you get to 242.

This is a pretty hard class, but Professor Derstine is definitely the best person to take it with. Really useful lectures, printed out notes, and she's clear about what is on the tests. Go to class, pay attention, do the homework, and use the resources that she provides.

Professor Derstine is very kind and you can tell she cares about her class a lot. Shes a solid teacher, though the homework if often much harder than what is gone over in class. Tests arent too bad but I averaged a B- on them and thats with studying around 10 hours before each test. Solid choice nonetheless.

Professor Derstine is an amazing professor. She really cares about her students success and is very sweet and funny. COB241 is a hard class in general so I don't think that's her fault. To get a good grade you are really going to have to put in the work. Probably the best choice for professor though.

Solid professor for 242, definitely not as bad of a class as 241. She makes everything as easy as she can and ensures we get a lot of practice in. Exams count for a large portion of the grade though, so beware of that if accounting isn't your strongest.

I wish I could give her six stars. Made 241 so easy for me with guided notes, online homework with 2-3 tries, and exams based directly on our course pack. You literally can't ask for more. I will be taking her again in the spring, even if it has to be at 8am because she is the best prof ever.

The most OP teacher ever. She makes this class easy with guided notes, the tests are literally copy and paste from the practice questions. Such a nice lady, extremely accessible outside of class. She is what every teacher should hope to be, wish I had more room to type. Easily the best choice for 241. Take her class at all costs, you wont regret it

i love this woman. taking her again for 242, she made me become an accounting major. accounting is a difficult subject but her coursepack is a GODSEND! she is super caring and wants student to succeed. she offers tons of resources to study for exams. my favorite professor at JMU. fast paced but its clear she knows where to focus attention.

Her 241 class is really hard but that's just the material. She is super caring and really funny and is just so much more of a human being and she has great energy. She makes herself super accessible because she knows it's hard material. Great professor to take these hard COB classes with.

you have already seen the reviews, she is awesome, for me this classes material was very difficult, she has an in class workbook she uses, its like 20-$30 so not bad and it is extreeeeemely helpful to have around, do not use chegg for this class you need to actually learn the material, I'm speaking from experience.

241 is hard. Derstine provides hundreds of practice problems & the exams are just like the practice, nothing unexpected or meant to trick u. Lots of HW which is good practice & great grade buffer bc u get 3 check my work so theyre free 100's. 4 exams & cum final, & offers some extra credit. By far best prof for 241, def taking her for 242.

Professor Derstine was amazing this past semester. Going into 241 I was nervous as most are but she made the content super easy to learn and kept classes interesting. The only downside is the homework can be challenging sometimes but she drops your lowest ones so it won't kill your grade. Would definitely recommend her to anyone taking 241.

This class was hard. She purposefully makes her tests harder than the final, but that also means most people do much better on the final. There was a lot of McGraw Connect hw but it helps you understand content better. Do not underestimate the amount you have to invest in this class to earn a good grade though.

A really solid option for 242. She gives you all the information you need for exams. She goes the extra mile in lectures to teach and cater to what students need to know on the exams. I didn't go to her office hours, but she was really nice and approachable in class so I'd assume the same for outside the classroom. She's like a mom figure and cares

Professor is a great professor and person who cares very much about her students. She is extremely accessible outside of class and is willing to help her students. The course itself is very difficult and she believes making her tests more difficult than the final will prepare you for it. Study and know material. She gives lots of resources.

I really liked her, super hard though (this is just one of the hardest cob classes). You have to put in around 4-8 hours each week. The homework assignments are annoying but overall she's a good choice. Makes her exam harder than the final and no curves.

There are 5 tests and a final. This was the hardest class ive taken, but I dont think that is the professors fault. She is caring and wants to get to know students. She goes at a fast pace in class and the homeworks take 3+ hours every week. Make sure you study a LOT before the tests. Tests are MC and free response. No curves L

Best accounting professor ever! She gives you everything needed to do well. You have to invest a good amount of time to get a good grade, but it's worth it. She makes her exams similar to what she teaches so go to class and go to office hours whenever your struggling. I switched my major to accouting because of her. 100% recommend.

She truly cares about her students so you get all the resources you need to do well (extra practice, answer keys, office hours, etc.) Accounting can be difficult and boring but I did well because of her. 4 exams and a final plus homework assignments for each chapter. The GOAT of accounting professors for 241 and 242. Very sweet and cares about her students, and makes the material understandable, you do gotta put some effort into the class though. Her exams are difficult, but it makes it easier come finals week because the final is easier than her exams. Workload is manageable as long as you don't procrastinate.

She is a good professor that really cares about her students. She does move pretty fast and I think the exams are on the harder side. If you do all the assignments and study for exams you will do fine.

Best 241 prof. in my opinion. I had her at 8am and even though this class covers some rather boring or repetitive subjects, she made it interesting and easy to listen and stay awake during class. I don't think I would have walked away from this class knowing as much if I had not taken her. I would 100% recommend to anyone who needs to take 241.

I love Heidi Derstine! Coming into the semester, I thought that I was going to hate accounting but Derstine surprised me by being an engaging and enthusiastic professor. You can tell she really enjoys the subject. Already signed up to take her again for 242.

she was a great teacher, and I would 100% recommend her to anyone. she taught like we were her children in a good way, always making sure we knew what she was talking about and never demanding about anything. her door was always open. if you have the opportunity to take her, definitely do it.
