I don't especially recommend this teacher, unless you are into coffee becaue I could not stay awake in her class. She tests you on stuff she barely mentioned. Nice lady, but dry material.
Blames "whitie" for everything wrong with America and she's caucasian! Kept telling the class "Look what you get for being white" even though some of us weren't. Wouldn't listen to arguments against her stance. Easy grader, but STAY AW

She's a very challenging professor, the workload is heavy, but if you're interested in the topic, it's worth it at the end.

why are we paying you to teach if you refuse to do it.
One of the most incredible teachers that has ever touched my life. Be careful not to take her personality the wrong way, she comes across strong (because she is). One of the most influential women of the decade. She helps students transfer their feelings and realizations into words of meaning.
She is an easy professor, but her personality and "teaching" style make ANY of her classes not worth taking. She is the personification of the ignorant American political correctness gone astray. She is also very offensive if you are white. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
She scares many suburban white kids by being straight forward about racism. She doesnt let it go ignored. She can come off rude but she is very helpful if you meet her outside of class. Dont let her scare you. She really wants her students to learn and make a difference.
She can be very rude. Inefficiently uses class time (ie spending 45 min going over the grammar of one question). However in the end, if you do the work, come to class, and read everything you will not only do well but your writing will become more clear.
Her class, was terrible, act like she knew so much about Black people, but really didn't. Very Very Stupid teacher.
One of the most remarkable women ever. People should be lining up at the door to take advantage of the great privilege it is to have her at DePaul. Don't forget how ignorant people are and when you're as experienced and open-minded as her you'd probably get frustrated with the stupid comments I hea

Dr. Nast is an interesting professor. She instigates innovative and challenging discussions that really surpass most of the discussions i've had at DePaul. Although, she tends to be a harsh personality, and is not very clear on assignments. I recommend utilizing her office hours when confused.
Watch out for her. True she is strong and intelligent, but I havent met many people who are such bad individuals. Take the class, learn what you can, but dont talk to her. BE CAREFUL.
Amazinf professor. She let's you know exactly what she is looking for in order to get a good grade. At first she comes off as scary, but she is always willing to help and she is an amazing, intelligent woman. Take her!!
Bad professor! Hypocritical, confrontational, and argumentative for no reason (and not just argumentative for the sake of class discussion). She acts black and like she lives in the ghetto, but she lives in a nice apartment on the lakefront! I had a 89.5 and she couldn't give me the A. Definitly has favorites. Avoid at all costs.
Let's put it this way, I got an A and I still hate her and hate her teaching style. Just awful! Do NOT take.
She is very unorganized. She does not explain the curriculum and future assignments well and lets you know maybe two or so days before they are due. She is kind but her class structure is very iritating because she does not explain what she wants from the class and from the students.
One of my absolute favorite professors. Hard as hell, but a smart, smart woman.
Yeah, I'll agree that this woman is nuts, but I still love her. She is a great prof.. She is smart, and classes are interesting. She is also easy to talk to if you have problems with the material. Very insightful. Changed the way I think about the world. But I will repeat it again, she's wildly eccentric . . . and easy, too.
Dr. Nast is irritating beyond belief. She is condescending, judgmental, and just plain crazy. I could not stand listening to her for 90 minutes. Plus, she is very unclear about what she expects from you as a student, yet she marks you off for not adhering to her standards. I would not reccommend her to anyone.
yeah, she is a little out there, but that is part of what makes her cool. i liked the class, and she was interesting and passionate about her work. She spent a lot of time in Africa, and she is really smart. Take her, but expect to be challenged a little.
Dr. Nast is brilliant and very open minded. She is one of the best professors that I have ever had at DePaul. I highly recommend her because you will learn a lot. I try to take her every opportunity that I get.
I took her for my focal point requirement... I was excited for the class, but as it progressed, I quickly realized that she really was not that great of a professor. She believes everyone cannot write grammatically correct essays, so watch out
Before she was ok. This quarter she seems distracted and all over the place. If you take her class, remember "subject, verb, direct object" when writing papers. You can thank me later.
I was interested in this class even though it was required, but she made me want to change majors. She is definitely the worst prof. I have ever had. She is smart, but is intolerable! She doesn't count any opinions except her own and she doesn't explain her assignments. She tried to turn everything I said around to try and make me look ****!!
she has got to be one of the worst teachers in my life. she makes us do work that has nothing to do with the class. basically to sum her up she is the nicest **** you will ever meet. If you like asking her questions and then being completely ignored then she is the teacher for you.
This class is probably one of the worst I've taken in my life. It was supposed to help us get acquainted with DePaul and Chicago, but I ended up getting aqcauinted with the pet markets around the world. I don't know why she thinks it is helpfull to know this stuff. DO NOT TAKE!! She designed to be the level of a graduate course. I don't know why.

her discover class is about international pet product markets in relation to culture, economy, and politics. if you are actually interested in social sciences and the way the world works from a cultural standpoint then you will love it. lots of busy work, but it really is easy. she is very kind, fun, and very understanding. I loved it!
Doggie Love in Chicago? Meh, the idea of this course subject was not the same at any point of this class. Reading often did not have anything to do with what was being discussed. All in all, not a good class. Freshman Beware!
Awful. Avoid her at all costs. She made several people in my class cry...and I changed my major after having her! I got an A, but I would not go through a quarter with her ever again.
Horrible Professor!!!!! Syllabus was given too late to withdrawal and midterm due 8th week!!! Outrageous! She thinks she is the greatest and if you complain she will surely make your grade suffer!Trust me...she assigns readings only written by her and states only her opinion you cannot argue! Why is she still teaching?
Dr. Nast may have a slightly unorthodox style of teaching, but she's extremely smart and there's a lot to be learned from her. the best advice i can give is to give her a chance- i was amazed at how well everything came together in the end of the course. she cares a TON abt what she does and will be there for u if u care to learn. a great educator.
She showed up 15 minutes late everyday, hardly prepared for class. This course had no structure whatsoever and we got the syllabus waaay too late. She only read 1/4 of my midterm before giving me a grade. Our final grades were supposed to be posted a week ago, and they're still not up. She is completely crazy and inaccessible. Avoid this class!!
Its hard work, but you learn a lot if you actually sit down and go over your assignments with her.Its intense research, but ALL INT classes are intense. You do learn a lot, she deconstructs your thinking and that can be challenging but it also opens up different perspectives. Its not easy, but if you wanna learn to think outside the box, do it.
Professor attempts to teach students about the cultural and ethnic differnces inherit in every culture. She may be hasty at times, but means well for her students.
Dr. Nast is dedicated to her teaching and her students. Great peoples' person and pushes for the best out of her students. Reach for success and you'll get alot outta of the class!
she's an intelligent professor but understanding exactly what she expected from students took some time to figure out- be persistent with asking her what you're unsure about. grading scheme was a bit confusing, I was very nervous to get my grade at the end of the quarter
Heidi's ego seriously impedes the learning process. She humiliates students in front of the class if they say something she doesn't agree with. She forced us to do all of her research for her. We all spent 25+ hours researching her area of study. I felt used, exploited, and I am resentful of the time that this class wasted. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
attending class isn't mandatory, but professor nast will notice if you're gone.. BEWARE. your grade heavily depends on 2 things: the midterm and final paper. for INT'ers required to take 204 or 206, try your hardest to get the other professor, I was unlucky to have her as the only option. the review below mine sums her up nicely.
I cant believe all these negative reviews. Shes a great teacher that really cares about making your brain twitch and work. I LOVE her class. Sure shes a bit scatter brained, but that makes the class interesting. I also do NOT get the ego thing. As long as you open your mouth in class, you'll get on her good side.
She's wonderful. In the end, everything pulls itself together and makes sense. She isn't trying to EXPLOIT her students by making them do her research dummies. It's just all part of her research, that whatever students' topics might be, there's always certain patterns in them. You fools are just lazy asses. She's very unorthodox, but intelligent.
Nast is very intelligent and wonderful. If you pay attention and attend class, everything pulls itself together and makes sense. She isn't trying to EXPLOIT her students by making them do her research dummies. It's just all part of her research, that whatever students' topics might be regarding pets, there's always certain patterns in them.
Professor Nast is an amazing teacher. Although her teaching style is a bit different, if you keep your mind open you can learn a lot from her. She is very caring about her students and is very knowledgeable in her field of study. She is always willing to help out if you have questions and gives you a lot of guidance, you just have to ask for it!
She is by far the best teacher I've had at DePaul. She's inspiring and always takes time out of her schedule for her students. Extremely knowledgeable about the world we live in and why it is this way. We don't have to research the pet industry anymore, but it makes so much sense in relation to the class that I wish did. Take her! And do the work.
She is such a sweetheart! I had her for discover pets and business and she explained everything very clearly. She's also very relatable and intelligent, and she bought us pizza on the last day. Seriously take her shes so nice
Dr. Nast is one of the most brilliant and dedicated professors at DePaul. Her class readings are hard, but she wants you to succeed and will go to great lengths to make sure that you understand the material. (As long as you do the work for her class!) This class is demanding, but more than doable with the help of her insights and course material.
I didn't have a great impression of her at first. She seemed quite unorganized and the class begun to bore me, but she really is a great person. So sweet and relatable and helpful. Will go to great lengths to help her students. Still didn't like the class by the end of it, but liked her and will consider taking her again for something else.
Heidi is hands down one of the most brilliant professors I've had a DePaul. 204 completely revolutionized the way I view history and helped connect the dots of the interrelatedness of politics, economy, class, and identity. I cannot recommend taking a class with Professor Nast enough. Read, think critically, and engage in class, and you'll have fun
Class is a misnomer. It had nothing to with borders or identities, and she as someone else mentioned has an ego problem. She acts like students' lives revolve around her. She assigns a work load that is out of line with the rest of the university, and she gives females preferential treatment
Dr. Nast is extremely interested in helping her students succeed academically, professionally, and personally. She challenges you to think critically and question what you've been programmed to think. She's always willing to make time for students and rewards effort. There are only 2 assignments and the rest is reading and class discussions.
Dr. Nast expects much from her students, but she offers a lot of support and helps them to fulfill her expectations and grow academically and intellectually. She is very passionate about her classes and students. It is very clear that making her students stronger academics and better prepared is one of her top priorities.
Dr. Nast is unbelievably brilliant and moved me to an existential crises during every single one of the classes I have had with her. She makes you THINK, and think HARD about the world that we live in. The course she designed was remarkable and it changed my life.
Prof. Nast teaches you the skills you need to become a better student and life long learner. Many alumni who studied under her have told me how instrumental the research methods she teaches us are for higher education and personal study, & those claims could not have been more true. She has high expectations, but is someone you can turn to for help.
Breakdown-30+pp of readings each class, frequent quizzes on readings-can redo for higher grade. Don't try to get away wnot readingworking hard, she will chew you up & spit you out. GROUP PROJECTS (midterm quiz-5 sources, midterm-research15 sources, final-10pp). Demanding. Particular. BRILLIANT. INSPIRING. YOU WILL GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH!
This class is required to complete the International Studies major, but I would highly recommend taking this with a different professor. The end of term paper is very interesting (you pick the topic), but her class lectures are really out there. This class was supposed to be about capitalism, but ended up being a very weird philosophy class.
If you are not an INT major do not take this class. There are a ton of work to do such as reading. The readings are complex and this class takes more of your time than you bargain. Professor Nast is intelligent, resourceful and accommodating but if you want an easy A over being knowledgeable do not take this class.
She is very difficult to understand, especially regarding what she wants from you. I think it took her till week 7 to realize how confused our class was. She is really strange and makes the class feel uncomfortable all the time. She does bring up interesting ideas and is very thorough. I would recommend not taking her if you can.
Prof. Nast is one of the smartest and most interesting profs I've had at DePaul. Her classes are never boring and the topics are always mind-blowing. She is a very tough teacher but you will succeed if you put in effort.
This was my least favorite class and teacher in all of INT. She is definitely odd to say the least. There will be many moments where she will leave the class feeling awkward and uncomfortable if you choose to take her class. The schedule will constantly change and her directions are often confusing for what she expects . Avoid if you can.
Heidi is awesome. Class dynamic really changes a persons perspective of her, but she's fun to learn from and has a lot of interesting perspectives and theories in the IR field. The environment in the class was fun but you'll def. get called out if she thinks you aren't paying attention. The readings can be dense but always elaborated when we asked
She's awesome. She's a tough professor but she's in la la land a lot (you'll see haha). Comes to class late and goes over time. She's very motherly as in she's caring about her students. She sits down with students and makes sure they completely understand the material (she has meetings with them). She's funny and makes class fun.
Professor Nast is one of the worst professors I've had at DePaul. Not only is she culturally insensitive, she is disorganized, and limits the student's research topics to her own personal interests. She is not prepared for class, enjoys the power dynamic of humiliating students, and is constantly changing the class.
She's constantly late to class. Then yells at us if we're late. And when I say she's late, she's late by 10-20 minutes late each class. Make sure you do the readings or else she'll know. If you didn't read, she'll quiz you. Overall, she knows her stuff and her lectures are cool but if you dont think like her, shell think your opinion is wrong.
Dr. Nast is without a doubt the best professor at DePaul. She genuinely cares about every student she comes into contact with. She may be a little untraditional, but she also puts more effort into helping her students than anyone I've ever met. She expects you to try your hardest, and if you're struggling she will do anything to see you succeed.
Nast's classes were by far the most rewarding to me, changing the way I view the world & my place in it. She has made me a MUCH better writer & pushes her students to a better standard of work technically, analytically, & professionally. She pushes them because she cares & will help you succeed if asked! Class topics are also relevantly unique.
Pros: Take Heidi if you want to develop your writing skills. Assigns great readings & projects & is great with one on one help. Cons: Heidi has a HUGE savior complex & has issues with crossing boundaries with her students. She sees her students as their traumas & their ethnicity/sexuality/immigration status. She is also prone to angry outbursts.
Prof. Nast is incredably intelligent and a great lecturer. She is very upfront with what she wants, you have to follow the directions exactly however. I enjoyed the material and learned a lot. Nast oversteps boundaries, however. She consistently shares students personal and private information in class. Keep all personal information to yourself.
Dr. Nast is a really fantastic lecturer, and if you pay attention in class you will develop new worldviews and learn so much. However, she can be incredibly blunt and occasionally hostile. She is also incredibly unclear about expectations, stressing you out for the majority of the term.
Nast is a powerful and dedicated teacher. She is unapologetically herself and genuinely wants her students to succeed and embrace their inner curiosities. Come to class with an open mind and ready to learn. Her classes are thought provoking and challenging and you will leave with a better understanding of the people and world around you.
Awesome, but be ready to work. She truly cares about you to succeed, at the same time it is not one of those classes where you can skip the work. I guess what im trying to say is - if you here to learn def TAKE this class!!!
Beware of lack of course structure, direction and not even syllabus until 1/2 way through. Unclear grading policies, unwelcome class environment. Opposite of all other course experiences. Nothing wrong with reading and work, but no cohesion and expectations make for a disastrous experience.
Dr. Nast is an acquired taste. She is by far one of the smartest people that I have ever met. She is a bit disorganized and flakey but she goes out of her way to help you out if you reach out to her. She may come off as harsh but in reality she just wants you to do well. Make sure u master "writing in the active voice" or you'll struggle like me.
She is incredibly intelligent and respectable, but if you aren't an INT major don't even bother. There is SO MUCH homework and reading, it isn't worth taking the class just for an elective. I dropped after the first day because I know the workload was going to be way too heavy for a non-major.
Professor Nast has a lot of issues, the main one being that she is incredibly rude. I think she genuinely wants to help her students and if you are desperate to get an A, she'll make it happen. You just have to put in a ton of time with her outside of class and deal with her treating you like you're dumb. Overall she's very disorganized and mean.
Heidi Nast means well, but often comes across as arrogant and mean. She's very vague with feedback and has a terrible memory. She kept losing my papers, and made everyone redo assignments multiple times. She tends to get super defensive when people speak out against her views, and gets mad if you don't constantly use the active voice.
Prof Nast's classes have great readings and are extremely rewarding if you put in the work. She can be disorganized and come off as abrasive, but it's never out of malintent, she really wants her students to learn. She's always willing to work with you and if she sees that you paid attention and put in work, you'll get an A.
Whether by someone who loves her (like me) or not so much, any mention of Nast notes her effectiveness. Her classes are exhaustive in that super rewarding way of learning + improving skills SO much. Aside from but also causal to that is her unrelenting care for students, in and out of class. She comes on strong to equally open the space to us!!!
Dr. Nast approaches her work with a lot of precision and compassion. She continuously ensured that there was a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Topics on intersectionality were handled in depth with care and sensitivity. Dr. Nast is firm on responsible kinship and her teaching methods reflect that approach. Overall, the class was great!
To start, her class is incredibly disorganized. There is no structure, and the syllabus doesn't matter. She often goes on tangents, and if you told her anything, she would air out your dirty laundry. Write in the active voice, and keep opinions to yourself or she will give you a 0. Hates when people disagree with her at all costs. Avoid if you can.
Nast really does mean well, and while I love her as an individual, her class is the most unorganized, confusing, and pointless thing I've ever done. She makes absolutely no sense in class and simply repeats the same lecture every week. I really try so hard to like her, because she's obvi v smart, however her class is nothing but confusing nonsense.
Professor Nast was un-organized and gave un-useful lectures that were almost entirely repetitive tangents. Her grading was never based on content but entirely on whether or not you use the active voice. This made her grading come across biased and inconsistent making the course a headache. I do not recommend her as a professor if you can avoid.
Wants her students to understand why active voice is important and how language has power-if you don't get it right every time but at least try to understand that dynamic then you can still get in A! Her classes are difficult but by far the most rewarding INT classes at DePaul. Prof Nast is always available to talk and loves to help you!
I am a graduate student at DePaul and I have taken Dr. Nast's race sex and difference class. She is also my thesis advisor. I cannot say enough good things about her. She is so refreshingly honest, intelligent, creative, caring, and inspirational. Dr. Nast thinks outside of the box and encourages her students to do the same. I respect her so much.
I love Heidi as a person, she knows what she's talking about and each lecture is very interesting. However, she is very inconsistent with dates, requirements, and grades. She doesn't really give feedback and in the case of INT100, she changed half of class's final paper topic to the same one. overall, I like her but INT100 is all over the place.
Incredibly dogmatic and biased account of the origins of slavery. Professor Nast is not concerned with actual archaeological and historical accounts for the origins of slavery, but rather personal and biased accounts based on her own research. If you really care about history, don't take this class. This class is an Intro to Nast's Beliefs.
Prof Nast is incredible! Her class challenges you to think deeply about history and slavery, and she teaches with so much passion and expertise. No finals or mids, just weekly assignments that can be lengthy but come with very clear, detailed instructions. She truly cares about her students. Simply one of the best professors I've had at DePaul.
