I like her, I think she's great. Very clear on what she wants. She's always there when you need help. Awesome teacher. Recommend her for Lab, I'm not sure lecture, but I'm pretty sure she's great in that section too. :)
micro lab is fun! This teacher is great and she's cute too!
She is great! provides clear lecture. Test on what she taught. However, to get an A, you need to get 95%. Need an A for Biology? Think about that. Good luck!
She is a great teacher. Very passionate about the subject. Was always willing to give additional help. The lecture consisted of 4 tests, a quiz after every chapter, 5 homework assignments, and one paper on a study. I honestly think that the time spent on the homework and the paper is time taken away from studying for the tests but still great class
She's a great teacher. She wants her students to learn the concepts well and if you're a good student that earns good grades you'll like her class. If you're the type that wants to get an easy A and not learn anything, then take another instructor.
Highly reccommend this teacher. She made the class/ lecture interesting. Very helpful. kept us on our toes which will benifit a lot of people. I enjoyed the class and looked forward to lab.
She's a great teacher. The class is not too hard, but requires study time. Tests are a mix of MC, matching, short answer, and essay. So you need to know your stuff. She is very friendly and helpful, both duing class and office hours. Assignments are not difficult or time consuming. The paper is a little hard, but you have all semester to do it.
She is a great teacher.Heidi is crystal clear as to what she expects. Very patient and knowledgeable. I had her for lab and lecture and found her to be pleasant in both. Not an easy A.
very good instructor for micro. she makes sure everybody understands the topics. she lets you print our her powerpoint lecture and a study guide for every chapter. gives quizzes every end of chapter. exams are quite long because it has essay questions. as long as you answer the study guides, it's easy.
She's very helpful and I highly recommend her for anyone who is unsure of microbiology. She has her own objectives and lectures and uses both for the tests and quizzes, nothing extra. As long as you stick to her lectures and notes, you will not have a problem in her class. The book is really there for more understanding.
I got an easy A on her class. You don't have to read the book at all. Print out her powerpt. slides, take notes, & you'll surely get a high grade. She makes concepts easier to understand by using simple words & associating it with everyday scenario. She even fed us donuts to associate it w/ our lecture for one of the chapters. Cool class!!
She is a great teacher. Kind, and helpful. She hands out sheets telling you everything you need to know and makes sure you know the material while she is teaching it. Great for microbiology.
Easy, easy A and Heidi is absolutely adorable. The class is definitely remedial, and anyone who can dust off what they learned in middle school will do well in it. Very helpful. Could do without the "study skill" assignments personally, but I'm sure they help others. The general consensus is that our class all wishes she taught 189 too!
EXCELLENT TEACHER! Can't be more pleased with what I have learned. She makes sure you understand. Uses easy everyday concepts to get the point across. Must attend everyday or you will fall behind.
Excellent teacher. She's extremely helpful and really loves to teach the subject. Exactly what I needed to refresh myself on Biology. Her class prepares you well for Biol 189.
Amazing teacher. Knows her stuff, very passionate about microbiology. Very easy class if you show up. If you don't she tests off of her powerpoints. No need for a book unless you want more info, but she tests off of what she covers. Pretty hot too.
Her lab is awesome. She is a great teacher, likes to have fun, and is pretty hot. She knows her stuff and loves microbiology (she's a bonafide microbiologist). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
She is an awesome professor! She is extremely interested in what she is teaching and wants to help you learn, not scare you! What she tells you is what you need to know! Do the chapter reviews and you will get a good grade! Raise your hand to ask a question, don't interrupt, it's rude and she is a super nice. I really enjoyed her class.
Heidi is rad. She explains things so you can understand them and doesn't have to make things so complicated that you struggle just because she can. Her lectures are interesting and she is a nice person. I recommend her 100%
Heidi is such a sweet person. She is so compassionate about her job and makes learning easy for the students. she cares about her students, and works hard at making sure everyone understands! I would definitely recommend her for taking Microbiology!! I wish there were more professors like Heidi!!!
heidi is an amazing professor, always willing to help. She made the class fun, and not hard to understand.
The only good thing about heidi is she explains the material well, her tests are hard, and she is extremly picky and specific as what she wants for answer on her essay exam. yes, she gives essay exams, some short-answer,& lil.multiple choice. can be discouraging and mean sometimes!
Heidi is a very good teacher, but I agree with the previous review, her exams are not that hard but she is very picky when grading the essay portion of the test. But overall she is easy and very nice. Easy A.
I will be very honest. In my opinion she is not a good teacher that all. Her power point are very poor, you need to go home and study from the book, her exams are hard. all her exams have beetwen 2 and 5 essay questions. If you stiil thing she is eazy, take her and you wiil see.
She is the sweetest person ever! So helpful, and with her calming spirit she makes sure that everyone understand what she is teaching. I have never seen a teacher that cares about her students the way she does. Even the essay questions, that nobody likes, are very straight forward, her multiple choice questions are easy too, no tricks whatsoever.
she is very straight forward and makes sure everyone understands. she teaches with PP which i don't really like but makes up for it since she makes everything very clear. she gives quizzes and study guides. there are essays on the exams, but they are not that hard as long as you study.
Lecture is VERY dumbed down, but this class/professor combination is as straightforward as it gets. She is what many want in a professor, EASY to a fault, you won't learn much and what you do will be rote memorization. She is disorganized and takes too long to grade exams, but she's definitely easy. Know the study guide and a high A is yours
Heidi is a excellent professor - very entertaining, yet you learn and retain a lot. She stays pretty organized, keeps students involved; sweet, smart and considerate person. She is crystal clear about what she expects, focused to help her students. Even if you hate science, I promise you will enjoy her class. She is the best and huge asset to CSN.
Took her lab, it was very disorganized. Micro is interesting but we didn't really learn much - just memorization. Use all the print outs and study them for quizzes. Not hard, just frustrating. She is a sweet person though, maybe she was just out of it this semester?
Do the objective summaries and you'll do fine. What I don't like about her is that she never respond to my email and took forever to post the grades. I got an A but some of the assignments were useless & the class wasn't useful to me b/c I was also taking biochemistry and immunology at the same time. I lost interest in her class after the 1st exam.
I had her for lecture. She's organized and easy to follow. She took forever to update the grades though. I didn't learn much from her to be honest and the class was boring. Only 20% of the info I thought was useful in my field of study. Received a deserved B+ for slacking off. But an A to A+ is very doable in her class.
She is one of the greatest teacher I have met. She explains important information very well. I always brought a voice recorder and listened to her each lecture twice. I didn't need to read text book because her exams exactly came from her lecture.
Dr. Porter is awesome. She wants you to succeed and gives you a lot of opportunity with extra assignments. Requires study, if you got 189, you will get Micro. Highly recommend her, funny and makes class great. Easily approached and answers any question. Quizzes easy, tests require study for A's. Would take her anytime!
Dr. Porter is a great professor. Taking her class right now, she makes the subject very interesting. Just do her Study Guide every chapter and you will do good. Used the book only when i have to do study guide before test. record her lectures and you'll do good in the tests-multiple choice, short answers and essays. highly Recommend to take her.
First off, she's great. I learnd alot from her class & info she gave but she should put up the upcoming HW assgnments way before test time. On her exams, I was thrown off on short answers containing an example or situation. Otherwise shes a thumbs up. And 4 the record, NO Bio class @ CSN is an "easy A". More like a easy C.
Dr. porter is a very great professor. Took her class in spring 2012. she just gets her exams from her study guide and from her lecture. So record her lectures and do her study guide and you will do good. exams are multiple choice, short answers and essays. you will never go wrong with your essays, as long as the thoughts is there. highly recommend.
I am taking BIOL 251 from her now (Fall 2012) and I absolutely love her. She is so passionate about the subject. She is the reason I have decided to get a Master's degree in Micro after I finish my BSN.
Professor Porter ultimately sparked an interest in biology for me. If it were within my resources, I'd become a biology major. I am not the sharpest when it comes to learning the information, but it is all very fascinating. Porter is kind and willing to help you as long as you ask. She isn't much into technology - don't expect immediate results.
Makes difficult concepts crystal clear and is so enthusiastic she made me want to be a microbiologist. Her homework packets are a tricky way for you to use differtnt methods to learn the information. If you do your assignments and attend class you cannot avoid learnig the material. She is a born educator!
i had to get a "W" my first semester of fall 2011, horrible semester 3 exams 6 ch each! crazy! just took her this semester fall 2012, horrible at emailing us back, forgets to grade us, miscounts the points that she docks off on our test or assignments, so WATCH OUT FOR THAT! she comes off all nice but just horrible!! lectures are good.
Doesn't update angel very often and takes her time with grading, its an entry level Micro class (FYI). Should be able to pass the class. What you see is what you get.
Dr.Porter is passionate about her job and it shows. Since she is so excited about teaching it makes you excited to learn and attend every class. She lectures from her powerpoints and makes everything understandable. She answers everyones questions and is super helpful. I highly recommend taking her class!!!!
Marginal at best.
She makes difficult concepts easy to understand. Test are half multiple choice half essay (the essay questions are not that difficult). All the material from her test are from the objectives. Not an easy class but if you take the time to study you will pass.
She always post power point lesson late, usually last minute, right before the class and she expects us to know the lessons! Her excuse, she works more than 60 hrs/wk.We all do!Class questions if she doesn't know the answer, her excuse is "I am not a doctor, so I don't know." Her explanations are very confusing and jumps from one topic to another.
Ms. Porter is a helpful professor. But what surprise me is that most of her exams are based on the essay questions. So if your good at essay type tests take her if not definitely don't! By the way she post powerpoints late all the time.
amazing class, was really dreading taking micro, but it turned out to be an interesting class. although she does post PPTs late, i always brought laptop/tablet so i could follow along. her exams are intimidating because she has multiple choice, short answer and essay Qs, but its all in notes/PPTs, study! (they're easier than you think) recommend!
She seems very nice but when you ask her a question she gets a little snippy. In lecture she presents things in a way you can understand (well for the most part) yet, when it comes to the test, she gets very in depth on her questions and she loves to have you write essays which are usually 10 points each. I don't recommend taking her class.
I definitely recommend taking her class. I usually loath biology but she made this class very interesting. We never really used the book. She has objectives for each chapter. You study right/ you do well . she asks for 1 week to get your test/exams graded & back to you which was fine with me. She's super sweet & approachable.
WARNING: She is LAZY about grading. You are lucky if you receive your scores within 2 weeks. Other instructors give them out within the next class. Seems nice at first but gets sassy when you ask too many questions and especially when you ask for your scores. Unreasonable! Careful, she will throw in questions that were not gone over. Never again!
Heidi explained everything in terms EVERYONE understood. Made Micro actually fun and interesting. I would definetly recommend her class. She is a bit bad about grading but her energy and how she teaches make it all better
She has a way of making her lectures interesting, easy to follow. However, do not be fooled. Her quizzes are not as straightforward or "easy" as they seem. Her exams contain questions based off of material not entirely covered in her lectures or study guides. Do read each chapter assigned in its entirety. This includes every little detail.
She is the best professor I've ever had in 4 semesters of college. She makes difficult topics interesting and easy to understand. She's super nice and personable.
Professor Porter is by far one of the best instructors at CSN. Her lectures are not only easy to understand, but also very interesting. If you go to class every day, write good notes, and study it's impossible to get a bad grade. Her exams have essays, but aren't that difficult if you study!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER!!!
This ended up being one of the best classes I've ever taken, and I attribute that to the professor. Her excitement for the subject was infectious, which made learning so much fun. Although I didn't have the funds to have the textbook, I didn't find it necessary. Just know the objectives, review before quizzes, and you'll get a great grade!
This is a tough but extremely interesting class. One of my favorite professors defiantly my favorite class If you have to take microbiology at CSN take it with her
She is a great professor, all quizzes and tests are based on lecture so don't miss class! She covers a lot of material in each lecture. It helps to pay attention, those that are failing are the same people playing on their phones during lecture. Her chapter objectives list all things to study for tests/quizzes. Good note taking skills are essential
Her PowerPoint is horrible!! It's very hard to understand and not cleared... I would not take her again.. I learned more in YouTube than attending her class!!!
Porter was a great professor who sparked an interest in me about learning microbiology. She is extremely passionate about what she teaches. Take her advice about study habits and taking notes. Do her objectives. Those are what helped me pass the class with flying colors. One of the best professors at CSN.
I dreaded taking micro, but I ended up loving it because of how she made it so interesting! She also provided helpful study guides for lec and lab. She encouraged us to ask qs if we weren't sure about something. Go to class, record, understand concepts, review notes and you'll be fine! I did not struggle with this class at all because of her.
Go to class, take good notes, fully understand/study the objectives that she gives out and do her homework and you will get an A!
Totally loved her class! She really did made the class fun and interesting, like "your body is like a donut" .. Just go to class, try to record lectures, take really good notes. Her Tests are based on her Lecture and powerpoints
This class consist of weekly hw, 4 exams, 1 final, group activities, & 1 possible presentation (luck of the draw). Her exams are short answers, fill in the blanks , and an essay. Be prepared to take notes. Highly recommend recording. Her being excited about Micro, made me excited to learn it. She is the sweetest person. Favorite class.
As far as lectures go, she makes long biology lectures fun and interesting. She is energetic and very intelligent in the subject matter. I would love to take her again if I could. Downsides, when you ask her a question she can get a little snippy. Also, it takes a long time to get grades back.
Professor Porter is a very humble and caring lady. She may come off as a push over because she's so nice, but make sure not to half-fast the labs because she walks around and checks. I had broken and spilled some things and she didn't get upset, she actually helped me clean it up. She likes to walk around and answer questions during lab.
Great class to boost your Bio 189 Lecture Grade. Class totally doesn't match up with lecture but that seems to be a problem across the board. She isn't a harsh grader and each quiz is rather easy. Study the lab book for 30 min. before class and you'll be fine. She will let you leave early if you are legit about getting things done.
Amazing professor! I loved her class. She makes it interesting. You can tell she actually loves microbiology. She does objectives for every chapter that are everything you need for the tests. Offers up to 20 extra points by writing a couple sentences a day for minute summaries which is great.
I can not say enough good about this teacher. She makes typically boring material easy and fun. There are online videos to watch for open note quizzes, and you can meet her in the resource center to review whats going to be on the Lab quizzes. She is a 10/10! I'm a B student and I have an A! Study before every class as a refresher. Highly reccomind
She explains concepts in class that are understandable; her video lectures are confusing. Her golden rule of grading is to give assignments back in one week, which she does not, doesn't respond to emails, tests are mostly short essay and fill in the blank and are difficult, no powerpoints ahead of time, doesn't like to answer questions.
Objectives that she gives out are very broad. Know them and the details that came along with it and you should be fine. Ask for help and she will help you. Made class fun and makes you work for an A. Beware of the level of difficulty in this class even though it says 2.4, I think it should be rated more of a 3-3.5 level difficulty.
I really enjoyed this class. Lectures are always interesting and easy to understand. She does slideshows, but they don't have all the info, so take notes! I highly recommend recording lecture. This class covers a ton of info, so study regularly! I do wish she updated canvas more regularly. Not a super easy A, but a satisfying one! Highly recommend!
Clear objectives, excellent teaching techniques that will make you remember the concepts, right to the point and does not give excess information.
The best way to ace this class is to attend and record lectures. Do not rely on ppts to study because it only serves as a reference. Listen to recordings outside of class, take good notes, and go over her objectives. She's very passionate about micro and you can tell by the way she lectures. If you don't put in effort to learn then you wont pass :)
Heidi was amazing. Truly passionate about biology. She is very clear and gives great real life examples. She posts all of her powerpoints online but you have to show up to class to get the full depth of the notes. She offers extra credit, which was extremely helpful. 5 tests and one final exam. Weekly homework that is very relevant to tests.
She was great! You could tell she loved what she taught and was very clear and gave real life examples to better understand. Although she was a great lecturer, STUDY and read the chapters assigned, do not rely on the power points and objectives as they are too broad.
Her exams only have a couple of multiple choice. It's mostly write-ins and essays. So if you don't understand her lectures then you're done lol. She waits a week before giving everything back which sucks because you don't know your grade. The only thing I liked about this class was the open note quizzes.
Her powerpoints were all over the place, they weren't organized, and had a lot of misspelled words on them. Her exams were tough they contained multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, and essays. We had to watch video recorded lectures which wasn't so bad and the next day had a open note quiz so take good notes on the video lectures.
Heidi was an excellent professor. She really made learning about bacteria interesting. If you had any questions she was very quick to get back to you and shes always had everything graded within a week. Attendance wasnt mandatory but it did help a lot. If youre the type of person that doesnt like to show up to lecture dont take this course.
I got her in my BIO 189 and I didn't hesitate to take her again in BIO 251. She's an awesome professor, makes learning fun and go in deep details that wouldn't make you feel left out.
I would love to take a class with Porter again. She provides clear objectives for every chapter and lectures on those specific objectives. I used the book to supplement, but Im certain you could do fine without it. All concepts are kept simple, tests are written in a way that are easy to understand, assignments and quizzes are not difficult.
Her lectures are based off her power points she posts on canvas. She's more specific on her slides in person, obviously. But it's almost always repetition. She's really nice and makes sure you understand the material.
She is really sweet and if you haven't taken Biology in a long while, she goes pretty slow, which helps. Her explanations are clear and understandable. She is knowledgeable in her field. The only negative is posting homework and test grades. But if she is late doing so, she'll just give you the points. I recommend doing the extra credit.
Dont buy the textbook. Barely used it. She gives great lectures but make sure you pay attention & probably record them. Her tests are very difficult as the majority of the questions are fill in the blank or short answer. You really have to understand the material. The final was incredibly easy however. Overall would reccomend, but not easy at all!
Textbook is not necessary. Lectures and powerpoints are all over the place. Exams are mostly short answer or fill up the blank but she is really passionate about Micro so it makes the class interesting. Record the lectures, follow the objectives and listen to the lectures and you will get an A/B.
Took her last semester, lectures were excellent her passion shows! HW assignments were on great topics! Exams are mixture of MC, short answer/essay pretty tough but take good notes+ answer ch objectives u'll be fine Quiz questions are much easier than exams, half of score answer as a group so helps out, come to 20 lectures for full participatio pts
Professor Heidi is simply amazing. I took her several years ago and I genuinely enjoyed her class. She is kind, smart, sweet and always available to help her students. She is the best Professor I have ever had. Learned so much and Im currently getting microbiology degree because she instilled passion for microorganisms in me!!
